= Proto-Gnolls =
The original concept of Gnolls were actually a hybrid race between Trolls and Gnomes. Resembling a lanky, skinny hobgoblin in appearance and size, this race's genesis of the average Gnome (looking like a Garden Gnome back in BECMI) deciding to get it on with a Troll, with Trolls in those days looking like starving, near-skeletally thin, corpse-like beings with dirty green skin. Perhaps it was the sheer levels of WTF in the mental image of the conception of the first Gnoll that lead to the abandonment of the hybrid race in favor for demonic hyena furries, although anyone with knowledge of female spotted hyenas knows this just traded one source of squick for another.
