==History== ===Great Crusade=== Although the Horde was not officially founded until near the close of the Crusade, their predecessors were an army of warmongering mutants from Uryalla. Originally, they had settled their killer instincts by fighting with the deadly wildlife of the planet, but the Emperor saw a use for them as cheap meat to use in his fight against the endless foes that humanity would face in the galaxy. The Stars of the Uryalla sub-sector naturally produce excess radiation, which causes mutation to run rampant among the inhabitants of the planets. Although humans were present, they were very much a minority. Naturally, the human minority was given all of the power among the planets. With this power, they drafted the vast number of mutants and abhumans from the planets to take up arms in the name of The Emperor. For the majority of the Great Crusade, the army was confined to their own small region of space, slowly working their way out., destroying any force that opposed the Emperor and drafting their abhuman population into their ranks. It was near the end of the Great Crusade, shortly before Aubrey would fall to the Chaos Gods, that the Horde was transformed from a mindless rabble, into a partially organized army. This was due to the Supreme Governors of the Uryalla sub-sector fearing that the poor image of the army would reflect on them. They sent men to many of the more notable armies of the Imperium to ask for generals that could whip their army into shape. Few obliged, but those that did managed to perform the desired tasks. They were placed under command of General Gregorio Valua (now promoted to Lord Hordemaster of the Horde) ====Prasran Campaign==== The Horde's first notable campaign was against the Republic of Prasra. A Human civilization that resisted the Imperium, thanks to a combination of advanced technologies and a high Psyker gene count. They were unwilling to join, due to the vast prejudice against Psykers. The Prasrans developed and made heavy usage of Power Armour, and were considered one of the more powerful human factions that were not affiliated with the Imperium. The Prasran cities were built underneath mountains, so, orbital bombardment proved all but useless. Aubrey had been tasked with bringing the upstart nation to heel. However, the newly established Horde were an army that he took vested interest in. His own Xenos reserves were a secret that he intended to keep, but a non-humanoid reserve army that he could make use of openly would always be useful to him. The Eternal Zealots had already conquered most of the Republic, but Aubrey ordered the Horde to deploy to secure the homeworld of Prasra, granting them 3 ships from the Expeditionary fleet. All 9000 of them were deployed in the name of the Emperor to take control of the planet. The planets naturally poor weather and mountainous biome meant that armoured warfare was extremely impractical but, as the locals proved, not impossible. The battle was relatively balanced at the beginning. The hordes tactics and numbers proving to be the superior, but the Locals had much better knowledge of the surface. After 2 weeks, the Horde managed to capture one of the planets major cities. The first wave of Techpriests that had been sent to assist (The capture of a Forge-World being of utmost importance to the Adeptus Mechanicus) began using the Prasrans own grand forges against them, creating equipment and weapons to help bring the fighting to a close as soon as possible. With the tide beginning to turn against them, the Prasrans deployed their secret weapons. The great mountains cracked open, and with a roar that shook the world, a god awoke. Appearing from atop the hills were Avatars of Deus Mechanicus, Titans. The Titans quickly set to their task of destroying the Horde. Their first act was to use their powerful anti-orbital cannons that the carried on their shoulders to bring down 2 of the 3 ships, the third escaped their notice as it had been positioned over the northern pole of the planet and was thus shielded from their scanning equipment, thanks to the powerful magnetic forces. However, before it could move into position to fire back, the Horde were forced to abandon their staging area's and flee to the underground cities that they had captured. The Battle turned against them. It was during this time that the Adeptus Mechanicus' second wave of techpriests, arriving in a warship. They, reluctantly, brought down the great Mechanical deities with a quick barrage of their powerful cannons, before they could be located by their foes. Having grown intrigued by their ability to create Titans, Aubrey decided to take command of the situation, personally. Hearing that the Primarch was on his way, Gregorio, at first, panicked. He didn't want to fail his very first mission as Hordemaster and have to rely on the Primarch for their victory, but at the same time, with their surface bases being over-ran by the Titans, bringing victory before the Primarchs arrival was all but impossible. He quickly thought his way out of the situation. Consulting with the Techpriest Commanders, who had orginized this invasion, and they agreed to begin engaging the Prasran government in peace negotiations, he informed them that his commander was not so forgiving as the Emperor. That, Aubrey was a vicious tyrant, known for setting whole worlds ablaze. Fires from hundreds of years of conquest that still burned on battlefields over a century later. The Prasrans quickly surrendered. Aubrey heard about this and found great amusement in the idea, and almost eager to not disappoint them. Arriving on the planet, he had several random Horde members dragged away, pretending to have them executed for not ending the war with a bloody conflict. He also threatened Gregorio in front of the former head of the Prasran republic, as well as the many senators, to instill a lasting peace, through fear of his response to rebellion. By order of the Emperor, the humans of the Prasran cities, for their unwillingness to join the Imperium, became subject to Martial Law and severe sanctions, for 5 years. Almost all of the able-bodied men were conscripted into the Horde to replace those that they had lost during the battle. As a forge-world, the Adeptus Mechanicus took over as the planets main protectors, met with unrest from the civilian population. The Prasrans dedicated their vast forges to building armour for the Imperium. They were also granted permission to construct Orbital Manufactorums, in order to produce starships for the Imperium. ====Warboss Gutgrinda==== Gutgrinda was a Warboss that threatened the Moraka subsector. General Valua's campaign against them had proved to be most troublesome, as, with any Ork infestation, attempting to remove it was exactly what the Orks wanted. However, Gutgrinda, in his quest to prove that he was the biggest, strongest and most kunnin' ork in the universe, found that the Horde's Ogryn Shocktroopers more powerful than the Boss had realized. After the first 6 months of trench warfare, reinforcements came from the newly conquered Prasran system. Several Techpriests arrived with their new Charonite implants for a number of the Ogryns. With these upgrades mounted into them, the Techpriests soon set about performing well organized strikes. With the Ogryns only real weakness, it's lack of intelligence, being removed, as the Techpriests were now thinking for them, the Orks soon found that they were a little more than they could handle. Gutgrinda himself met his fate at the hands of Grumm "Head-Puller" Plorgan. ===The Hektor Heresy=== When the Heresy reared its ugly head across the galaxy, the Horde found themselves with loyalty problems; Aubrey wanted the horde to join him in rebellion, attempting to replenish his devastated auxiliaries, thanks to his most hated father’s orders. The Horde, Loyal to the Legion above them, the Eternal Zealots, found themselves as renegades, tricked into following the Zealots into war against the Imperium, convinced by Aubrey that it was the loyalists that had been the Traitors. Their initial attacks were against a Regiment of the Imperial Army, it was in this attack, however, that Gregorio heard the opposing army shouting their loyalties to His Majesty, as well as accusations of Treason. It did not take much time for the Hordemaster to figure out that they had been ticked. Several others in the army also heard this, including Discipline Master Gorash Braman, a noteworthy member of the Discipline Masters as he was the only Abhuman one in the Horde, having shown such blind loyalty, zealous abhorsion to Mutation and ruthless efficiency to his cause that he was given the promotion (Much to the chagrin of the other Discipline Masters). Gorash went to their Master, Aubrey and confronted him about it. Although the Traitor Primarchs silver tongue wove a tapestry of lies that would convince even the most loyal of men, Gorash would not listen, his indoctrination that he had undergone to join the Discipline Master was far too strong to be broken by mere words. He bartered with the Beastman, telling him that his ruthless aggression could serve Khorne, the Blood God well. Thet he could be granted any wish, should he submit to the Dark Gods. Knowing full well that he was no match for the Primarch, he drew his Chainsword and was immediately beset by the Primarchs personal retinue. The Primarch simply ordered his mens non-interference. Gorash warned the Primarch to leave the planet or they would come to blows. The Primarch, knowing that it was a battle he could not possibly lose, ignored the threat and called on the Discipline Master to reconsider, even offering his so coveted human form. Gorash, in response, lunged at the Primarch, who simply batted him away with the back of his power-armoured hand, sending him through the tent and into plain sight of his men. Gorash raised his Chainsword and roared a great, prideful roar as he swung it at the Primarch once again, the Primarchs armour far too strong for his basic weapon to penetrate. Gorash and his men quickly learned why Aubrey was known as The Surgeon, as every swipe of his blade destroyed more and more of the Discipline Master, all the while, Aubrey's whispers of Chaos creeping into the beast’s skull, but no recipient to acknowledge them. Finally, he played a feint, dodging one of Aubrey's attacks and swinging his Chainsword at the neck of the Primarch. But, with a minor flick of his shoulder, the Chainsword went straight into the Pauldron, shattering the Discipline masters weapon into a million pieces. Aubrey then merely sliced with keen precision at the back of the Beastmans tendons, and the Discipline Master was done. Commending the Beast for his ferocity and loyalty, he ended him with a quick slice of an artery in his neck and he bled to death in seconds. Upon witnessing this, Gorash's men immediately charged the Primarch and his men, who merely pulled out, they had more pressing matters than getting bogged down in needless fighting with some Abhumans. Many of Gorash's men died attempting to chase down the rogue Primarch. Gorash became a martyr to the Horde. And so, they joined with several of the Space Marine forces that were hunting the Eternal Zealots, although they usually were relegated to Canon Fodder. It was whilst the Horde was on its crusade against the Eternal Zealots, that Chaos tried to sprout forth in the Hordes protective territory. On Thaalcalas Gamma, Carbraction Kaal, a radical Techpriest that had been recruited on Thoth from the old Prasrans, had sided with Hektor. He arrived and converted several of the key officials to Chaos. The world collapsed in on itself in an orgy of blood and gore. Over the next few months, the Chaos Prasrans dug great trenches and poured the blood of the loyalists into it, creating a giant chaos symbol around the entire of the capitol city, in celebration to Khornes insanity. For this, Khorne granted an army to Kaal, with which to reconquer the worlds from the Imperium. Carbraction would serve the Dark Mechanicus well. Carbractions forces suffered few losses, pushing hard and fast through the Prasran subsystem, razing great hives to the ground and building great, ruinous icons on the rubble. On Ralkia Omega, his Kaal's acolytes decorated an entire mountain with Skulls. This mountain, in later generations, became known as Throne of Khorne. The mad Techpriest only halted his unrelenting advance when they came to the Prasra home world of Thoth, at which point, the Prasrans mounted what most would consider a valiant defence. The vast forges churned out copious amounts of armoured assault vehicles that the Chaos Daemons found great difficulty in penetrating. At the Siege of Moriabor, Thoth’s capital city, the great tanks poured from the underground and smashed through the ranks of those loyal to the Dark Gods. The Chaos forces pulled out from the world as Adeptus Mechanicus' reinforcements, in the form of the Horde, began to close in on the planet, Hektor had been kept abreast of the situation, and ordered them to redirect efforts on Terra. The damage to the Prasran worlds was irreparable, so their mission was completed. Although, Kaal has vowed to return and finish his conquest of the world. After the dust settled, the people of Thoth accepted the Adeptus Mechanicus, who had provided invaluable assistance in defending their world. As of that day, the Adeptus Mechanicus have taken over as the great cult that the people of Thoth looked to for guidance. With the threat in their own borders dealt with, Gregorio convinced the Uryallan government to commit all of their forces to attempting to break the seige of Terra. With the many Space Marine legions tying each other up in brutal warfare, their little subsector was in little danger of being attacked without one of the Astartes legions moving to assist (The governers put more faith in the Emperor's Super Soldiers than in filthy abhumans.) Gathering a number of the armies, including every Ogryn available (The only beasts capable of competing with an Astartes in pure strength) The Horde made a bee-line for Terra, picking up whatever remnants of armies they could find along the way. Luckily, the Thunder Kings' push to Terra had already paved the way for them to approach the Terra Sector unopposed. Meeting up with the Thunder Kings on Jupiter, the momentum that they had gained in their push to Terra was halted as they were forced to face the Chaos imbued traitors that now served Hektor. Involved in heavy fighting on the Jovian Colonies, the Horde served as little more than cannon fodder and defense for low-importance positions, allowing the Thunder Kings able to commit more brothers to the battle to take back the cradle of humanity. During this time, Gregorio took control of the Steel Guts, utilizing their immense strength in order to actually stand a chance in melee combat with the former Emperor's finest. However, the Horde were ordered to not engage the Traitors directly. Although they had the spirit to carry the day, Brennus knew that they stood little chance of actually attaining victory over the much better organized Chaos Astartes. The Horde did partake in minor skirmishes with the Traitors daemonic allies. The Horde's initial 5000 men were quickly whittled down until finally, Void Angels arrived. The Astartes were able to turn the tide, with the Eyes of the Emperor, Steel Marshalls and the Silver Cataphracts able to actually start to push the Chaos forces back in their long march to Terra. The Horde was left behind, lacking the strength or the numbers to be of real use to the Astartes, the Void Angels put them to work, rendering relief to the Civilians that had been caught up in the battle on the Jovian Colonies. During this time, several key members of the Horde went missing. The former Grand Shaman, Maa Rhamyuu never again appeared in recorded history, it is believed that she was killed during the battle. ===Age of Rebirth=== With the disappearance of the Primarchs, the abscence of the Emperor's direct control, and the High Lords of Terra, Inquisition and Ecclesiarcy controlling the Imperium, the Horde found itself under immense scrutiny. The Horde was quickly dissolved and its members put through intense screening processes. Most of them were put to death, as the Inquisition claimed "Only the work of Chaos could cause mutation of such grotesque horror." The Horde was replaced by the new Astra Militarum and the Horde merely faded into an old legend among the people of the Uryalla subsector.
