Clara was a slave girl/whore, and one too shy or timid to be considered any good at what duties she was supposed to perform. It was just something about her that her masters didn't like, something about being too shrewd and unappealing that eventually lead them to treat her brutally.

With no rights at all, and even being treated poorly by other slaves, she didn't have the type of fortitude necessary to cope well. This eventually lead her to try to set one of her masters on fire. It didn't work though, and for punishment she was to be burned alive.

Mask of Winters came to her then, through the flames, and offered her a new chance and she was reborn. She's not really that adept at being a moonshadow, but for a very long time after her exaltation she trained herself.

She belongs to him now, body and soul. And will never think of betrayal again.
