=== Background ===
As a mortal, Falling Phoenix was something of a town-hero, renowned for his valor in something of a small capacity. He was always willing to stand up for the little guy, or protect a beleaguered woman. One day came, though, that a fire began in a home in his small town. The villagers came to his house to bid him in to save a trapped child. He hesitated - but only for a moment before heading inside. The hesitation was enough, and the house collapsed soon afterwords, crushing him and the child inside.

After he entered the Underworld, his rather disillusioned soul caught the eye of the Mask of Winters. The Mask snagged up his soul, and placed it into a Monstrance. The Mask offered him many things as the torture began.. but it did not last long. His virtues he had held as a mortal had all but inverted, and he no longer '''cared''' for creation. He accepted not but a few scant minutes after he realized what was going on. The Mask gave him a new name, and bid him to forget his old one. It was as Phoenix nodded, that the Black Exaltation took him. His already-charred skin solidified to his bones, unmoving, and no longer healing. He felt his seething hatred for a world that had given him a poor, sad end bubble over.
