Using MTG as the guide... power gamers tend to concentrate in the older formats where power levels and old combos mean pretty much every competitive deck has to be built around some sort of combo superweapon and the question is who can build theirs first.  Whilst there are powergamers in Standard, the restricted nature of the format limits how dangerous they can be.  Those that do exist need deep pockets to keep on top of FOTM; they will always be buying into whatever is on the rise.

Draft formats destroy powergamers entirely due to the random chance element of draft deck building.
