===The Fantastic Four=== One of the oldest and certainly the breakout stars of Marvel's early days, the Fantastic Four's star has waned somewhat since the Silver Age. When scientist Reed Richards persuades his old friend Benjamin Grimm to pilot an experimental rocket of his up into space, along with siblings Susan and Johnny Storm, the quartet are bombarded by mysterious cosmic radiation. Crashlanding back on Earth, they discover that each of them has been imbued with a supernatural ability; Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) has gain a body of living elastic, allowing him to stretch, squash, and reshape himself as he desires, whilst Susan (Invisible Girl/Woman) has gained the power of invisibility (and, later, invisible forcefield projection) and Johnny (The Human Torch, taking a name from a World War II hero that was actually a robot) can cover himself in a fiery aura that lets him fly and hurl fireballs. And poor Ben Grimm (The Thing) has been transformed into a monstrous, ogre-like figure made of rocky scales, imbued with fantastic strength and durability. The Fantastic Four thrived in the Silver Age; their entire concept was, essentially, "explorers of the unknown", with Reed constantly inventing new rockets/time traveling machines/dimensional gateways/scanners that uncover long-hidden secret civilizations and the like. But even here the "super soap opera" formula was taking form. Reed and Sue's relationship is always somewhat rocky, since Reed has a bad tendency to focus on his science and neglect his wife, whilst Reed also feels guilty for Ben's incurable transform, and Ben resents him in turn. And all the while, Ben and Johnny squabble like brothers. Seven years after their creation (surprisingly brief for superhero romances) Reed and Sue have a son they name Franklin after Sue and Johnny's father. Franklin had the power of Psionics, with the exact details as confusing and contradictory as pre-3.5 psionics. The most notable thing about Franklin is his aging makes the the sliding timescale weird: Born in 1968, he was barely more than a toddler (if that) when he joins Power Pack in 1986, and only hitting puberty in the late 2010s. If you're thinking that their powers are surprisingly weird even for a Silver Age origin, Marvel actually does canonically have both a parallel universe where they each got different powers, and four where they all got the same basic power. Plus a universe where the cosmic rays had no effect on them whatsoever, but that's boring, so we'll ignore that. The "different powers" universe is officially called Earth-7712, and here each got a set of powers based on different aspects of their personalities to the ones that the canon FF got. Reed Richards' focus on his own intellect and his isolation from humanity turned him into a living disembodied brain with telepathy, telekinesis and mental bolts, earning him the name "Big Brain" - although by the end of his oneshot appearance, he would have stolen Dr. Doom's body for himself. Ironically, Susan Storm got the living elastic powers that Reed-616 got, due to her "pliable personality" and desperation to fit in, becoming "Ultra Woman". Johnny Storm's fascination with machinery turned him into a super-strong being of living metal and magnetic energy; "The Mandroid". And Ben Grimm found his love of flight taken to a whole new level when he grew dragon-like wings that let him fly as "Dragonfly". The "same powers" universes, on the other hand, were far less happy... * Earth-9031: The "All Human Torches" universe. In this dimension, after a little girl was accidentally killed by a fire they started in their first battle against the Mole Man, they broke up as a team and only Ben kept up the superhero gig, going on to join the Avengers. Reed went back to his science business, Susan became a nun, and Johnny became a professional racecar driver. * Earth-9032: The "All Elastic" Universe. With Sue thinking the powers were "creepy" and "ugly" and Ben having no desire to be thought of as a freak, they turned Reed down flat when he proposed becoming superheroes. They went on to get married to each other and live a normal life. Reed went back to the lab. And Johnny became a popular comedic actor named "Mr. Fantastic". * Earth-9033: The "All Monsters" Universe. Sue ends up a mindless animal, Reed's mind devolves into savagery, and his last human effort is to exile the four of them to Monster Island so they won't hurt normal people. * Earth-9034: The "All Invisibles" Universe. This one technically breaks the rule because of them gets a part of Sue Storm-616's power set; Reed can make himself and anything around him invisible, Sue can turn herself invisible, Ben can create invisible force fields, and Johnny can become intangible. The happiest of the four parallel timelines, in this timeline they all become agents of S.H.I.E.L.D... which means they even take down Dr. Doom. Oh, and there's even a canon "evil knock-off" of the Fantastic Four in the canonical Earth-616 universe, because a bunch of people figured "hey, if those idiots got superpowers by flying through a cosmic ray storm, why can't we?" They're called the U-Foes, and consist of Vector (psychokinetic ability to repel, attract, block and accelerate objects), Ironclad (superstrong monster of living metal, can also alter bodily density), Vapor (can transmute her flesh into any gaseous element she desires) and X-Ray (basically the Human Torch, but can't turn it off and is electromagnetic radiation rather than plasma). The really funny part? They're considered more closely associated with opposing The Hulk, rather than the Four, since, while they're more powerful than the Four, they're not very smart and lack control, both self and of their powers.
