Alfen (singular: Alfar) are a race of playable fey in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. They hail from an article in Dragon Magazine #257, which examines the idea of using AD&D mechanics to roleplay in what is basically Dark Ages Britain. Alfen are effectively a variant Elf race, one with greater affinity for illusion and transmutation magic than is normal. This ability to disguise themselves as humans allows them to integrate with the xenophobic humans of their world more readily, and indeed some alfen have risen to positions of power and authority amongst men. They are slightly taller than normal elves, and have fuller figures, whilst their hair color ranges from brown to sandy and their eyes range through shades of gray and hazel. Alfen are a chaotic breed, neither benign nor malevolent by nature; they are as their whims dictate. Except where differences are noted below, this race possesses all of the same racial abilities as the standard AD&D elf: ::Ability Score Minimum/Maximum: Strength 4/18, Dexterity 4/18, Constitution 3/18, Intelligence 5/18, Wisdom 7/18, Charisma 10/18 ::Ability Score Adjustments: +1 Charisma, -1 Wisdom ::Class & Level Limits: Fighter 15, Ranger 15, Priest 12, Thief Unlimited, Wizard (Mage, Abjurer, Diviner, Enchanter, Transmuter) 15 :::Multiclass Options: Fighter/Thief, Fighter/Mage, Fighter/Mage/Thief, Fighter/Priest, Ranger/Thief ::Do not have Infravision, but can Detect Secret Doors as per Elf. ::Resistance to Charm spells drops to 60%
