= Characters = == Mid-World Characters == ANDERSON: This guy tries to shoot Alan and the rest of the GAS-DRUM POSSE in a hotel lobby, but misses. THELDIN puts a few bullets in him. ANDERSON'S WIFE: This poor lady has the misfortune of being on the wrong side of the GAS-DRUM POSSE. CAN TAM: These mouse-sized bugs come out of the SQUIRE'S LEAP ABBEY after our ka-tet's khef provokes them. CAN-TOI: See LOW MEN. CLAY THE ROBOT: An eight-foot tall robot who hunts slow mutants and humans for fun. COHEN, ALAN (ALAN OF GILEAD, ALAN OF THORNWALL): Alan is a failed gunslinger, beaten and exiled from GILEAD. Once he still held some glimmer of nobility, but by the time we meet him he has fallen to low company, acting as scout and armed guard for a dry-goods caravan trudging through the desolate wastes of Mid-World. He meets JOSEF LA ROUX in the MUTIE FOREST when he is attacked by a GIANT SNAKE. Alan carries many weights of his past, chief among these his continuing abandonment of what he cares for. He bears a brand of the Crimson King under his left arm. He also tends to drink to excess, and is nearly blind in one eye from his fight against FARDO. Despite all these matters he tries to do good. ELRIC: See WHITE LIGHTNING. ==== EV CHARACTERS ==== * CLAY: Shortly after ALAN COHEN rode into EV with ROY DALE and WILL they encountered this robot, as it hunted one of the local SLOW MUTANTS for sport. Clay lead them to the gathering place of the GREAT OLD ONES, although not the ones Alan was expecting. * GREAT OLD ONES: The surviving members of the GAS-DRUM POSSE encountered these creatures after CLAY led them to a mist-filled valley inside the city of EV. * LANCE: This set of talking goggles was first picked up by WILL, who found it allowed him to see through the mist that enveloped EV. He attempted to use it to ambush ALAN COHEN but got a nasty surprise. * SLOW MUTANTS: These charming folks attacked the GAS-DRUM POSSE as they rode into EV. They spotted another one being chased by CLAY, but it escaped. ==== FENRO CHARACTERS ==== * CHILD IN WINDOW: This curious youngster peered at the ka-tet as they passed, until someone pulled it away and drew the curtain. * DOLSON, GRETCHEN: The wife of LAWRENCE DOLSON. She tries to shoo PEAK THE BUMBLER outside when she sees him, until the ka-tet talks her down (and Peak retreats under a chair). * DOLSON, LAWRENCE: One of the members of FENRO's town circle, along with FRANDIN, ANTOINETTE VENN and MILES PORTERHOUSE. He doesn't believe Alan's story about the events in SQUIRE'S LEAP. * FRANDIN OF FENRO: This man is the welcoming committee for Fenro. The ka-tet first encounters him when he waits in the road as they approach. Later he invites them to the home of LAWRENCE DOLSON. * PORTERHOUSE, MILES: This aged man has painful arthritis, but still gets around on his own. * THOMAS: We don't know his last name, but he had a LONGARM aimed at the ka-tet as they entered FENRO. * VENN, ANTOINETTE: Uta doesn't like being shushed by her. ---- GANGLI, DOCTOR: Uta has unpleasant memories of him in the DEVAR-TOI. ---- GAS-DRUM POSSE: These quasi-military men were part of the GOOD MAN's forces in the past. At the time ALAN COHEN met CLAY THE ROBOT they reported directly to the WALKING MAN (under the guise of Richard Fogwain). * THE CAPTAIN: A burly man with a dirty moustache and a military uniform reminiscent of third-world generals, festooned with medals. He gave orders to the troupe of riders, each of whom was branded with the sign of the Eye. * CLARKIE: This aged man in blue clothing served drinks at the HALDEEN MANSION. THELDIN threatens to kill him if he isn't quick with their drinks. * BERNARD: A joker with a cruel streak, he dies in the time between ALAN COHEN's induction into the Posse and his branding. * DALE, ROY: A man brought in from the EASTERLY FIELDS to replace BERNARD. He had intentions toward a fourteen-year old whore with a mutie mark during ALAN COHEN's branding. He is eventually shot by WILL. * THELDIN: A crude and boorish man, he dies from a slow mutant's arrow through the throat. * WILL: Though he begins as the leader of the Posse's riders, THE CAPTAIN begins to favor ALAN COHEN instead. ==== GILEAD CHARACTERS ==== * BARTON: Josef reminisces about spending free time with him. * ELD, ARTHUR: The ancient King of All-World. All Gunslingers trace their lineage to him. * FARDO: He trained apprentice Gunslingers. ALAN COHEN was struck nearly blind in one eye by Fardo when he failed his test. ---- GOOD MAN, THE (JOHN FARSON): This nasty character leads the primary opposition to GILEAD and the Affiliation. THE WALKING MAN is his adviser. ALAN COHEN worked for the Good Man in the past. HAMIL: Apparently a resident or employee in the DEVAR-TOI. He was as large as THE WOLF. ==== HIGH REST CHARACTERS ==== * BLAKE MACKEY: The barkeep of the High Rest asks Josef if she is a rider and one of Blake Mackey's people. * BRISSERT: The barkeep of the High Rest. According to SAI MANTO, he talks too much. * HIGH REST BARKEEP: See BRISSERT. * HIGH REST PATRONS: Three of these men are engaged in a game of Watch Me when Josef enters the High Rest, while the fourth watches them. * HIGH REST TOWNIES: These two men are sitting outside the High Rest when Josef approaches it. They harass Josef until she is prompted to show her iron. * MALHABLADA: One of the HIGH REST TOWNIES calls Josef this. It means "woman who speaks badly", although it can also mean a woman who swears. * SAI MANTO: This harrier had a long scar with a starburst on his face that looked like a comet. He attempts to recruit or rape Josef in the HIGH REST. He turns up again in the MUTIE FOREST, where he is killed. Immediately thereafter he is possessed by the WALKING MAN. Alan addresses him as "yon shit." ---- LA ROUX, JOSEF: Josef is the daughter of a Gunslinger of GILEAD, with the misfortune to have been born female. She is described in appearance as being like one of the court-ladies of ARTHUR ELD's days. When we first meet her she rides without purpose, upholding THE WHITE as best as her education of it allows. ==== MUTIE FOREST CHARACTERS ==== * ALAN'S HORSE: Killed by the GIANT SNAKE. Alan takes the HARDCASE HORSE to replace it. * ARMS CARAVAN: This three-wagon caravan was disguised to look like it carried dry goods. In reality, it was full of old grenades and mortar shells. Alan was paid to mind the caravan, although he did not know its true nature. * CARAVAN HORSE: Alan and Josef are traded this stallion and the HARDCASE HORSE by TALL FRANCIS. After they use him to move the munitions wagon they send him on his way. * DEAD BUMBLER: This poor thing came to the clearing at the end of the path thanks to the GIANT SNAKE. By the time Alan sees it, all that's left is part of it stuck to one of the snake's fangs. * GIANT SNAKE: This thirty-foot snake resided in the MUTIE FOREST. It was killed by Josef and Alan. Fortunately for Alan, its bite doesn't seem to have been poisonous. * GREAT HYDRAXES OF GARLAN: These creatures were rumored to eat stars and live for a thousand years. The GIANT SNAKE is probably not related to them. * HARDCASE HORSE: Tall Francis offers this speckled brown-and-white mare to Alan and Josef along with the CARAVAN HORSE. She faithfully sees him all the way to FENRO, where they leave her behind and board WHITE LIGHTNING. * HARRIERS: These two men on horses accompany SAI MANTO to retrieve the ARMS CARAVAN. * HORSELESS VEHICLE: Alan sees the remains of this vehicle just before he encounters the GIANT SNAKE. * MAN WITH LONGIRON: He was perched atop the second wagon. Alan thought he looked about fifty. * TALL FRANCIS: The paymaster of the ARMS CARAVAN. * WALKING MAN: We don't know for sure who this is, but we have a pretty good idea! * ZEKE: One of the caravan tenders. He catches a bullet in the leg during the fight with SAI MANTO and his men. ---- PEAK THE BUMBLER: Alan first meets this chatty creature in the MUTIE FOREST. According to Josef the bumbler is luckier than either of them. ==== SELLOW REACH CHARACTERS ==== * BLUE SHIRT: A troublemaking drunk who rode into town with Alan. He had a dirty, ill-kept pistol. Alan puts an end to his trouble after he interrupts the OLD MAN's story. * MAN WITH KNIFE: He was about to stab BLUE SHIRT before Alan intervened. * OLD MAN: This man was telling stories in the SELLOW REACH TAVERN when he was interrupted by BLUE SHIRT. * SHERIFF: He deputizes Alan after seeing him act in the SELLOW REACH TAVERN. ---- SISTER ALTHEA: Josef and Alan meet this beautiful white-garbed woman on the trail just outside the MUTIE FOREST. She uses a poultice on Josef's wound from the ARMS CARAVAN and leads Alan to the SWEETWATER STREAM. According to her, she and the rest of her order serve THE WHITE. ==== SQUIRE'S LEAP CHARACTERS ==== * BILLY: The last of Thrush's crew to die. He falls prey to the LITTLE SISTERS' hypnotic suggestion. * DIETZ: He was supposed to ambush Josef outside the SQUIRE'S LEAP TAVERN, but Alan and Josef never saw him. He may have been a victim of the LITTLE SISTERS. * HALLERS, THRUSH: When Alan has a vision of him speaking to the WALKING MAN he learns that Hallers' crew calls him Thrush Hollers behind his back. Based on his conduct we can see why. * LITTLE SISTERS: These vampiric creatures are apparently part of SISTER ALTHEA's order, a fact she does not deny when confronted. * RALLY: He gets sent outside with WENT and taken by a LITTLE SISTER in front of Josef. * RUNNING MAN: This townie runs out of the fog at Josef fleeing the LITTLE SISTERS. Josef sees him taken by one of them. * WENT: Thrush sends him outside to investigate Josef's decoy with RALLY. He doesn't make it to her. * WINDOW MAN: One of the LITTLE SISTERS tries to use him to break a window of the SQUIRE'S LEAP TAVERN. ---- WASTE-SNAKE: This snake prompts SISTER ALTHEA to scream when it emerges from the cliff of the SWEETWATER STREAM. Even though it isn't very big, it still gives Alan a chill. WHITE LIGHTNING: Wouldn't you like to know. WOLF, THE: This wolf-headed TAHEEN acted as Uta's supervisor during her stay in the DEVAR-TOI. == Our World Characters == FIELDS, MARK: A twelve-year old resident of HAVEN. Uta thinks of him as an "All-American Boy," and once knew another man with the same first name in the DEVAR-TOI who was killed trying to escape. After the battle in the STORM TUNNEL, Mark is brought to Mid-World through one of the DOORS. GAUNT, LELAND: Raymond thinks Gaunt might be a demon. ==== HAVEN CHARACTERS ==== * BARKING DOG: We haven't seen this dog yet, but both Raymond and Uta have heard it. * BARNEY THE GAS-MAN: Uta and MARK FIELDS observe that FRANDIN of FENRO looks nearly identical to this resident of Haven, except Barney doesn't have a moustache. * CLOTHESLINE WOMAN: She threatens to shoot Raymond after mistaking him for TURNEY. * DOCTOR CASPAR: He thinks Uta might have sunstroke. She was just suffering from expending too many darks. * GUARDIAN: This malevolent entity resides in the STORM TUNNEL outside of Haven. Uta can hear its psychic call, and presumably it can sense her. * MARK'S FATHER: He works for the Park Service. MARK FIELDS steals a pair of fence-cutters from him to cut Raymond's chains. * MARK'S GRANDPA: According to MARK'S DAD, he lied like a fox. From what we can infer, he's probably dead. * MARK'S MOTHER: She doesn't think very highly of Uta. * MARTIN: He owns the shotgun that CLOTHESLINE WOMAN plans on shooting Raymond with. * OSTERMANN, TOMMY: He drowned in the STORM TUNNEL a year before Uta met MARK FIELDS, prompting the parents of Haven to forbid their children from playing in it. * RATS: Uta is not above making a meal out of these creatures. * RADIO KID: He announces he's leaving just before Raymond climbs through the window of the RADIO HOUSE. * ROCK-THROWING MAN: He took issue with Uta trying to steal bread. Luckily for her, he has poor aim. * SIDEWALK CROWD: They watch as DOCTOR CASPAR helped Uta up after the battle with the WALKING MAN. There are two ladies in dresses, a man in a suit, two boys of about eight, a pair of teenagers, and a dog. * TURNEY: We aren't told who he is, but the CLOTHESLINE WOMAN doesn't want him around. ===== CAKE STORE CHARACTERS ===== * DELIVERY DRIVER: The owner leaves the store to talk with him. * MAN WITH APRON: He surprises Uta as she's attempting to steal from the store. Luckily for her, he mistakes her for the RATS. * OWNER: He picks the wrong time to meet with his delivery driver. ===== CINEMA CHARACTERS ===== * ANGRY PATRON: He asks the LOW MEN to be quiet. * COYOTE, WILE E.: Uta sees this cartoon when she sneaks into the HAVEN CINEMA. In the DARK SPEECH, animals like coyotes and spiders are called "CAN-TOI." * OBESE MAN: Uta sits next to him in hopes that the LOW MEN won't spot her. * ROAD-RUNNER, THE: Uta compares herself to the Road-Runner. ===== POLICE OFFICERS ===== * OFFICER WITH WHISTLE: This man tries to stop Uta outside of the HIGH REST HOTEL. Uta thinks of him as a human agent of the CAN-TOI. He thinks her outfit is a joke. * POSSE-OFFICER: Uta ducks into the CAKE STORE to avoid him. * SMOKING OFFICER: After Raymond backs out of the RADIO HOUSE he spots a policeman chain-smoking in his car, and spends the afternoon crouched in an alley. ---- LOW CAR: The LOW MEN use this to get around Americaside. The first time we see a Low Car is when it's tailing Uta, just before she hides in the HAVEN CINEMA. This car is described as red with yellow trim. The next time we see a Low Car it's when Raymond hitches a ride with the Low Men. This time it's described as yellow with darker trim. Either the Low Men have two different cars, or it can change its appearance. We do know for certain that it can drive itself, although the NIGHT DRIVER might disagree. LOW MEN: These three CAN-TOI were on the hunt for Uta after she escaped from the DEVAR-TOI. * BLUE SUIT: He wears a baby-blue suit and a fedora. While Raymond rides in the LOW CAR with them he cleans his fingernail with a jackknife. After chasing Uta through the HAVEN CORNFIELD he gets a broken nose and a broken leg for his trouble. He is later killed by Raymond in the STORM TUNNEL. * DRIVER: He claimed to be on Raymond's side during his ride in the LOW CAR. He has an insincere smile and long teeth like a horse. Or a rat. * MR. EX-SUNGLASSES: He wore a bomber jacket, a stout top hat and a pair of large white sunglasses, until Raymond broke them. After Raymond agrees to work for them, Mr. Ex-Sunglasses shows him a Polaroid picture of Uta. He steps into the clearing at the end of the path courtesy of Josef's gun. NIGHT DRIVER: When Raymond takes his ride in the LOW CAR it gets close enough to make the other driver honk. RAM ABALLAH: The LOW MEN want Raymond to remember this phrase. Of course, we know it is a name of the CRIMSON KING. ==== SHAWSHANK CHARACTERS ==== * PRISON TRUCK: This truck was used to move prisoners from SHAWSHANK to the GREEN MILE. It meets its end when the cab is struck by lightning. * SHAWSHANK GUARDS: These two men accompany WALTON as Raymond is taken to the PRISON TRUCK. * SHOUTING CONVICT: He shouts encouragement at Tucker from his cell. * TRAILING GUARDS: These two men were in the police car behind the PRISON TRUCK. They chased Raymond into the woods. * TRUCK DRIVERS: These two officers are tasked with driving the PRISON TRUCK to the GREEN MILE. * WALTON: One of the screws who escorted Raymond from his cell to the PRISON TRUCK. * WALTON'S NEPHEW: Just before Raymond is taken out of his cell, WALTON blames him for his nephew's death. ---- TUCKER, RAYMOND: When we first meet Raymond he is awaiting transfer from SHAWSHANK to THE GREEN MILE for the deaths of multiple people. We quickly learn that this state is due to the interference of LELAND GAUNT, to whom Raymond sold his soul in return for earthly want, and who prophesized that Raymond would "ride the lightning". This almost comes true on the ride to the Mile when the PRISON TRUCK is struck by lightning, and becomes literally true when he boards WHITE LIGHTNING along with the rest of the ka-tet. UTA OF RIVER CROSSING (UTA OF THE DEVAR-TOI, UTA OF MID-WORLD): We first meet Uta shortly after her arrival in HAVEN, Maine, and learn that she is an escaped Breaker from the DEVAR-TOI in End-World. Pursued by the LOW MEN on orders from THE WOLF, she first encounters MARK FIELDS and later RAYMOND TUCKER during her time in Haven. She leaves Haven along with Mark and Raymond through one of the DOORS in the STORM TUNNEL. ==== WATERVILLE CHARACTERS ==== * FRUIT STAND GUY: He was minding the FRUIT STAND outside WATERVILLE. * MIDAS DESK CLERK: This guy worked in the MIDAS HOTEL and didn't approve of Raymond being there. * TOWNIES: These two locals in blue overalls stared at the carnival truck when RAYMOND TUCKER parked it across from the MIDAS HOTEL. ---- WHERE-WOLF: Uta's misunderstanding of the word "werewolf." WILLIAMS: Raymond hears the radio announcer talking about him when he breaks into the RADIO HOUSE. Presumably he plays baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers. ==== WILLIAMS CARNIVAL CHARACTERS ==== * CALLIOPE * DOWARD, MR: This hairy-knuckled gent runs the Williams Carnival from his tiny, cramped office. * GEORGE THE GIANT: He was one of the "freaks". Despite his small size, George had a reputation for an explosive temper. * JOSE THE LION-TAMER: He hangs out with Calliope's inner circle. * MOTHER AND CHILD: These two were walking by George the Giant when he used an expletive. * RACHEL: She worked as an acrobat. Rachel is nineteen, and described as "pretty in a homely sort of way." When RAYMOND TUCKER drives into WATERVILLE to pick up LELAND GAUNT, Rachel rides along. ---- WILSON, HIRAM: A lifer in SHAWSHANK. He gave Raymond several pieces of memorable advice. ZOMBIS: The mud around the STORM TUNNEL reminds Uta of these. ---- == Places == === Mid-World Places === EASTERLY FIELDS: ROY DALE of the GAS-DRUM POSSE hails from here. EV: ALAN COHEN and the GAS-DRUM POSSE entered this ruined city looking for weapons of the GREAT OLD ONES to stock JOHN FARSON's armory. After Alan escape he watches as Ev vanishes into the mist and disappears from MID-WORLD. FENRO: This town lies some days' walk beyond SQUIRE'S LEAP. Unlike the poisoned and inhospitable waste around it, Fenro is green and lush, though apparently not as fertile as its residents would like. The ka-tet briefly stops here where they are first mistaken for harriers. After a short palaver with FRANDIN OF FENRO and the other town authorities, they learn why: five years prior to the ka-tet's visit, agents of the GOOD MAN came to Fenro and tried to get WHITE LIGHTNING started. * DOLSON HOUSE: The ka-tet palavers with FRANDIN OF FENRO in this blue and white house. GILEAD: Both Alan and Josef hail from here. HALDEEN MANSION: Alan was inducted into the GAS-DRUM POSSE here. The doors from the antechamber were decorated with carved nymphs covered with thick green paint. The mansion also had electric sparklights inside. HIGH REST, THE: This unkempt tavern and inn lies in a town on the edge of a poisoned waste, though the name of the town is as yet unrevealed. A lone GUARDIAN OF THE BEAM remains as the awning's decoration. MUTIE FOREST: This nasty place is one of the last regions before SQUIRE'S LEAP. The ARMS CARAVAN was to pass through here. It contained at least two BILLY-BUMBLERs, as well as the mutated GIANT SNAKE. The SWEETWATER STREAM lies just beyond it. RADIO OUTPOST: This ruined building of the GREAT OLD ONES has a skeletal metal tower next to it. Josef and Alan pass it on the way to Squire's Leap. According to SISTER ALTHEA, there is another like it on the outskirts of the town. RIVER CROSSING: Uta is originally from here. SELLOW REACH: This town has troubles with harriers. The SELLOW REACH TAVERN can be found there as well. SQUIRE'S LEAP: Josef rode from this town to the MUTIE FOREST after overhearing the GOOD MAN's men discussing the ARMS CARAVAN. * ABBEY: See SQUIRE'S LEAP ABBEY in Portals and Magic Places. * GENERAL STORE: The ka-tet finds several pairs of good boots, jeans, and blankets for their trip here, as well as a brass oil lamp and a plastic poncho. * TAVERN: Alan is met with ambush in this tavern. Shortly thereafter, so is THRUSH HALLERS' crew. STATION 15: The ka-tet passes by this building during their long walk from SQUIRE'S LEAP to FENRO. It looks a bit like the RADIO OUTPOST. The sign on it proclaims it to be "Mid-World Station 15, Western Arc." SWEETWATER STREAM: This stream runs alongside the trail from the MUTIE FOREST to SQUIRE'S LEAP. Despite the scarred and foreboding nature of the surrounding landscape, the stream's water tastes very pleasant. Alan and SISTER ALTHEA drink from it, and Josef drinks from Alan's canteen. === Our World Places === BIG ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN: Raymond is sure he won't end up here. CHURCH OF PLANO, THE: We don't know where this is (or even if it really exists), but BLUE SUIT claimed he was collecting donations for it when he tried to get into MARK'S HOUSE. HAVEN: Uta and Raymond find themselves here during their escapes. * BASEBALL FIELD: Uta meets MARK FIELDS here. The fence has a lost pet poster left by the LOW MEN and a wanted poster with a picture of Raymond. * CINEMA: Uta sneaks into this place to shake the LOW MEN. * CAKE STORE: This building has a large plate-glass window that says "CONFECTIONS." * CHURCH: Fairly close to the TRAIN-TRACKS. Raymond spots it on his way into Haven. * CORNFIELD: Close to MARK'S HOUSE. Uta tries to ditch BLUE SUIT by getting to the trees on the far side of it. The CORNFIELD EYE lies in the middle of it. * GAS STATION: Uta and MARK FIELDS pass by here on the way to his parents' house. The proprietor BARNEY THE GAS-MAN is the twinner of FRANDIN OF FENRO. * HIGH REST HOTEL: Uta sees this building when she first enters Haven. She hides behind it when she spots the LOW MEN. It is possibly a twinner of the HIGH REST TAVERN in Mid-World. * MARK'S HOUSE: This house is yellow with white trim. Uta thinks it looks a lot like the houses in RIVER CROSSING. * NED'S ICE CREAM SHACK: MARK FIELDS suggests going here with Uta just before the battle with the WALKING MAN. * RADIO HOUSE: Raymond climbs through the kitchen window of this house after the RADIO KID leaves. He enters intent on stealing clothing, but flees without doing so. So named for the radio in the window reporting a Dodgers game. * STORM TUNNEL: See STORM TUNNEL under Portals and Magical Places * TRAIN-TRACKS: These tracks bend around a hill and run along the edge of Haven. Uta found herself on them after walking out of the DEVAR-TOI. Raymond briefly contemplates hitching a ride on them. * TYPEWRITER STORE: Uta runs past this boarded-up building before she reaches the CINEMA. FARMINGTON: We are not told where it is, but MARK FIELDS and his family lived here until he was two years old. GREEN MILE, THE: A small prison maintained for death-row inmates and located in rural Maine. Raymond is being transferred here from SHAWSHANK when the truck he is riding in is struck by lightning. LILYPAD POND: Raymond encounters the LOW MEN here after escaping the PRISON TRUCK. SHAWSHANK: Raymond resided in this Maine prison for a time after LELAND GAUNT betrayed him. WATERVILLE: RAYMOND TUCKER drives here to pick up LELAND GAUNT. * COUNTY TEN: This road leads from Farmer York's field to Waterville. * DRIED-UP FOUNTAIN: This is near the Waterville Daily Press building and the Midas Hotel. * FARMER YORK'S FIELD: The WILLIAMS CARNIVAL was located here when Raymond first met Leland Gaunt. * FRUIT STAND: Raymond and RACHEL pass this stand on the way into Waterville. * MIDAS HOTEL: Leland Gaunt gets picked up at this four-star hotel. * WATERVILLE DAILY PRESS: Raymond and Rachel pass this building on the way through town. WILLIAMS CARNIVAL: This carnival toured all over Maine. RAYMOND TUCKER and LELAND GAUNT both worked there. * FREAK TENT: Raymond passes it after leaving MR. DOWERD's office. * HOUSE OF MYSTERY: This attraction was housed in a vehicle that unfolded into the building. According to Raymond, the freaks hung out behind it. * STRENGTH-TESTING GAME: This outdoor attraction was next to the freak tent. ---- == Portals and Magical Places == BEAM, THE: According to BLUE SUIT, one of the BEAMS runs through the HAVEN CORNFIELD. CORNFIELD EYE: When Uta flees MARK'S HOUSE after being found by BLUE SUIT, she comes across a place where the corn has been trampled down to form the outline of an eye. She chooses this spot to make her stand against him. DEVAR-TOI, THE: This fell place disguised as a quintessential American town is where the BREAKERS work to destroy the BEAMS. DIN-TAH: The Great Furnace, where children toil endlessly to further the CRIMSON KING's plans. Uta has a vision of MARK FIELDS toiling there as well. DOORS: We see a goodly number of twinners crop up when it comes to doors, and our ka-tet has discovered two magical ones so far. * THE DEMON: Uta finds this door in the STORM TUNNEL outside of HAVEN. Uta can't open it. * THE LIGHTNING-ROD: Josef finds this door in the basement of the SQUIRE'S LEAP TAVERN. It has an iron sculpture of a wolf's head for a handle. Opening it leads to the STORM TUNNEL via the door marked THE DEMON. SQUIRE'S LEAP ABBEY: After SISTER ALTHEA warns Alan and Josef not to enter this place, they do so anyway. As it turns out, the abbey is full of hibernating CAN TAM. STORM TUNNEL: Uta is led here by MARK FIELDS after they meet. We later learn that a GUARDIAN lives here, and with good reason. It is along the path of the BEAM along with the HAVEN CORNFIELD, and Uta, Raymond and Mark exit it using one of the DOORS. ---- == Appendix I: High Speech, Low Speech and Mid-World Argot == HAIRY GUYS: This is MARK FIELDS's approximation of "harriers". I WALK IN THE WHITE: SISTER ALTHEA says this to Alan just before she leaves him at the edge of SQUIRE'S LEAP. LONGARM: A Mid-World term for a rifle. Another term is "longiron" SEASONS: These cracker-like snacks are fairly bland, but with a bit of sugar in them. LAWRENCE DOLSON serves them to the ka-tet during their palaver in FENRO. SPARKLIGHTS: This is a Mid-World term for electric lights. Few working remnants of the GREAT OLD ONES remain, so electric lighting is particularly prized. WHITE, THE: You should probably know what this is already! ---- == Appendix II: Our World Terms == THERE'S A THOUSAND PRETTY WOMEN WAITIN' OUT THERE, AND THEY'RE ALL LIVIN' DEVIL MAY CARE, AND I'M JUST THE DEVIL WITH LOVE TO SPARE: One of the LOW MEN sings this as he walks toward the STORM TUNNEL.
