[[File:Mars.jpg|right]] Mars was the second celestial body colonized by humanity after Luna, and its initial purpose was as a jumping off point for greater space travel. After facilities became more advanced and space travel became easier, Mars evolved into humanity's major production center, beginning with planetary and orbital shipyards and later expanding into a center for any material goods. Today, its industrial capacity rivals with Earth. With its abundance of natural resources and position as the crossroads for all major interplanetary travel, Mars flourished economically, becoming in some respects a modern-day Rome on a massive scale. Mars is the new melting pot, with a variety of cultures, people, and ideas travelling through or settling on the planet's surface. But the rapid development has given Mars a darker side. While Mars as a planet is likely the richest in the system, its high population density sports the greatest degrees of poverty in the system, and also Mars has the highest and most difficult-to-manage amount of crime, from crooked business to hackers to interstellar mafia, Mars has all of it in spades, and, on top of that, a repressive, authoritarian regime for government (although not as bad as the Jupiter Empire). Martian military is split in several service branches and specialties, each under the authority of Supreme Space Command, the main headquarters of the armed forces. Special units, especially those which distinguished themselves in battle or otherwise boast good results, are held on a long leash and left with much freedom of action.
