whfb-stub Khatep the Liche Lord is a Tomb King special character introduced in 8th Edition of Warhammer Fantasy. == History == Khatep is a Skelly-Pope of the Mortuary Cult, the main religious organization of Nehekhara. Unlike other Tomb Kings, who were normal not-Egyptians buried in pyramids and later awakened by Nagash's dickery, Khatep was never truly dead. In fact, he is quite possibly the oldest continuously living human in the Warhammer world. He's old enough that he served Settra the Imperishable himself when the latter was still mortal. Back in ye olde days, he was one of the priests Settra sent on a mission to discover immorality so Settra himself would never die. During this search, Khatep discovered the spells that allowed Liche Priests to bind their souls to their bodies even after their death. Though the body still decomposed somewhat after a while, effectively turning Mortuary Cult members into walking skeletons covered in skin. On Settra's deathbed, Khatep was the one who promised the priests would later bring him back in an immortal, immaculate gold body, after which he'd have an everlasting reign in a paradisiacal Nehekhara. No one really knows what Khatep did during the millennia after Settra's death (even during several wars with Nagash). After all of Nehekharans turned undead and started (re)killing each other, Khatep arrived in Khemri with the bright idea to awake Settra and his army, considering him the only one who could clean up the mess. It worked. But it also backfired for Khatep as, immediately after restoring order, Settra summoned Khatep and the other priests for a meeting, being quite displeased with everyone's new looks and the state of the kingdom. After Khatep explained what Nagash had done, Settra banished Grand Hierophant Khatep from Nehekhara's cities on pain of (re)death until he restored Nehekhara to its glory days AND delivered the promised form of immortality. To this day, Khatep wanders around the Land of the Dead searching for scrolls and relics of power to make Nehekhara great again. He occasionally shows up to save fellow Nehekharans from being defeated, only to disappear in the desert once again (like an undead Gandalf). Saving the city of Rasetra from the dragon-sized spiders of Mount Arachnos and Mahrak from Lizardmen are but two of Khatep's feats. == The End Times == Khatep had a small but important role in The End Times. He sensed Nagash harnessing the Wind of Death and saw the cloud of darkness he used to engulf Nehekhara. So he had an idea how to stop him. The weapon "The Destroyer of Eternities", was a two-handed sword that destroyed the souls of those slain by it, and he figured it could kill Nagash. Khatep broke his exile and headed to Khemri to tell Settra of the weapon, despite knowing what Settra would do to him for breaking his exile. But since he travelled by foot, by the time he reached Khemri, it was nearly imperiled by Nagash's forces. He reached Settra, who was predictably enraged by Khatep's presence in Khemri. Khatep asked only that Settra hear him out before administering the punishment. Settra, a clever man despite his rage and ego, agreed. Khatep told Settra of the blade, and Settra decapitated him as soon as he was done speaking, Khatep making no move to avoid his fate. Sadly, Khatep's sacrifice was for naught, as Skaven assassins had stolen the Destroyer of Eternities before Settra could reach it and given it to Apophas. Worse, by the time Apophas used it on Nagash, he'd consumed enough divine power that the blade couldn't destroy him. == Tabletop == == Total War: WARHAMMER == He can have a casket of souls as a mount. To Total War fans, in this configuration, he is known as "DJ Khatep" (and he may or may not be called that when not manning a casket of souls). In terms of items, he is missing his Scroll of Cursing Word. His staff does the scroll's job, but it doesn't do what his staff is supposed to do. Tomb Kings
