The Paladins Sanguine were a successor chapter of the Steel Marshals who fell to the worship of Khorne. They were never fully Codex compliant, but the chapter has retained more of its structure than most other renegades. ==Chapter History== The Paladins Sanguine were formed in the closing years of M33 under the leadership of Sigvald Thulmann, the so-called "Joyous Knight". Thulmann and his followers were well known for their jubilant spirit in battle, as well as their piety and consideration for their human bretheren. Their original purpose was to serve as protective forces for worlds adjacent to the Maelstrom, and for many centuries they performed this duty with honor. Their recruiting world Mordenval was nearly a paradise. Crime was low, the people were happy, and the silver-clad Paladins were models of justice. They engaged in several major campaigns of note over the next few thousand years. Thulmann himself was slain in the Teclan Skirmish at the beginning of M35. The Coven of the Raven's Skull was a splinter of the wicked Black Augurs, come to the Maelstrom to enact a great and terrible ritual. They intended to corrupt a ring of 8 worlds around the Maelstrom, thus expanding the storm into a new Eye of Terror. One of these worlds was Mordenval, and the Coven swooped down onto the pristine planet like a great flock of sorcerous locusts. The Paladins were not prepared for an assault of such magnitude, and the war quickly went against them. Their planet was churned into a nightmare of bloody trenches and killing fields. As their encroaching defeat became ever more obvious, Ganelon began isolating himself in his private shrine to beg the Emperor's deliverance. Reinforcements were delayed by the warpcraft of their enemy, and so he had nothing to rely on but his faith. His prayers were answered only with silence until the Coven had surrounded Mordenval's final stronghold, the Bastion of Truth. As the Silver Prince begged for aid, mortifying himself before the icon of the God Emperor, he heard a voice unlike anything in his earlier life. This voice, a regal whisper that spoke with barely-checked bloodthirst, offered Ganelon the help he so desperately needed. In return, it asked only that he and his chapter dedicate themselves to taking blood and skulls for its pleasure. The desperate Chapter Master agreed, but on two conditions: he would slay no innocents, nor would he allow his men to descend to the level of berserkers. With mocking laughter, the voice agreed, and the Paladins Sanguine were changed forever. As the Coven prepared for the final assault, reading the spilled blood and detritus for clues to the battle ahead, they suddenly noticed the overwhelming stench of blood. Given Mordenval's devastation, this was hardly a new sensation. But the stink that now pervaded the citadel was unlike anything they had experienced yet. This was merely the herald of the changed forces that charged out to meet the dark wizards. Enormous Flesh Hounds poured from the Fortress' gates, claws of brass and teeth of silver tearing apart anything in their path. Mounted atop the steeds were howling Paladins, their silver armor obscured by the fierce toll of blood they reaped. Dreadnoughts, now possessed by cruel daemons, crushed the besieging daemon engines under clawed feet, roaring insanely with a newfound desire for carnage. Lucas Ganelon himself rode at the head of his army, mounted atop a monstrous Juggernaut and bearing a brass daemon sword. The Coven of the Raven's Skull unleashed their most powerful sorceries, but the new-made warriors of Khorne had finally gained the protection they had so desperately needed. Spells simply fizzled and died as they struck, or rebounded against their casters. The Paladins still retained enough semblance of honor to accept the surrender of those Coven members who imagined to offer it, but they were chained in the deepest holds to serve as slaves, crafting daemonic weapons and items for their new captors. The power of the Coven was broken, but so too were the former defenders of humanity. All that was left were the fragments of their old code of honor, and a lust for blood which could barely be contained. ==Notable Members== ==Warband Combat Doctrine== The Paladins Sanguine have fought much the same throughout their history. They always favored close combat over ranged, and frequently charged into battle on bikes. After their fall to Khorne, they have substituted many of their bikes for the terrible Flesh Hounds; the only change to their love of close combat was an increase in bloodlust. Notably, the Paladins retain much of their sense of honor. They refuse to kill non-combatants and innocents except for psykers; even these they prefer to enslave. As worshipers of the Blood God, they use no psykers in battle, keeping those they do not execute as slaves for the crafting of weapons. ==Warband Culture== The Paladins Sanguine are warriors torn between their deep sense of honor, and the lust for blood that their god fills them with. They were once joyous in battle, and happy to defend their human subjects. Now they are harsh overlords, demanding tribute and work from the humans under their command. The warband still maintains a refusal to wantonly slaughter innocents, however. The only blood they view as worthy of sacrifice to their lord is the blood of other warriors, or that of psykers.
