Rothé are a half-arsed attempt at providing an ecology for the Underdark as aren't the usual mushrooms. They're... cows. Well, more like furry, cave-dwelling yaks with the horns of a ram. They appeared first in the Fiend Folio because where else would they be.
Forgotten Realms has shown the rothé the most love, putting them in the module City of the Spider Queen, in "The Ship Of Night" in Dungeon issue 20, and in "An Artist's Errand" also Dungeon #45. As for Greyhawk um. Queen of the Spiders appendix, anyone?
