Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon is a turn-based tactics game by Slitherine Stategies, and focuses on the Second War for Armageddon. Players can control two factions: the Imperium consisting of the Armageddon Steel Legion, the Ultramarines, the Blood Angels, the Salamanders and even Titans. The other faction is purely Orks. And yes, Yarrick appears in the game as well.
Armageddon is very much a niche game, made for people who either like turn-based tactics games or Warhammer 40,000 (but preferably both). Those of you who expect a dynamic and action-packed RTS might have more luck with Dawn of War. Armageddon on the other hand is very much a tactical game: if the concept of Panzer Corps meets 40k excites you then this is the game for you.
Gameplay[edit]
Armageddon is a turn-based tactics game. This means that you take your turn to order your units around, move them and have them attack where you see fit. After that your opponent takes turns to perform their moves, after which it's your turn again. The game is semi-randomized: for example weapons might be very accurate up close but lose their accuracy the farther away you are from your target.
In a game the objective is for you to capture and hold certain objectives on the map, much like a regular game of 40k. You do this by blasting the enemy off the hex it is on and park your unit onto it. For how long you need to hold onto the objective varies per match.
Why it's good[edit]
- It's a solid system for what it wants to be: moving and shooting is very easy to do.
- There are a LOT of units: nearly every variant of the Leman Russ Battle Tank, Baneblade, larger transports and tanks, multiple artillery pieces, various Land Raiders and Predators and other tanks as well.
- Battles are fairly big with plenty of units on the field without heavily taxing your system.
- Units do what you'd expect them to based on their tabletop equivalent.
Why it's bad[edit]
- The interface is not very good: if you want to learn about your units you need to click all individual stats. Also if you want to see if your units can still move or shoot you have to zoom all the way in, which is rather annoying.
- The lack of animation on units: they're all extremely static.
- Weapon animations are not very inspired.
- Aside from a handfull of scenarios in the single player game you can only play as the Orks in Multiplayer. If you want to exclusively play as Orks, the devs released a standalone game, Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon - Da Orks.
- Lack of customisation on units: your Titans come in one loadout each and that's it. Same goes for all other units.
