Third Caster is a slang-term that appears on /tg/ in reference to Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. A Third Caster is any class capable of spellcasting with the following traits:

  • They start gaining access to spells at 3rd level.
  • They are usually a spellcasting subclass to an otherwise non-spellcasting class.
  • They can reach up to 4th level spells.
  • When multiclassing, it takes 3 levels in this class to gain 1 caster level.

Third Casters in D&D 5e currently consist of the Eldritch Knight subclass for Fighters, the Order of the Profane Soul subclass for the OwTheEdge Blood hunter and the Arcane Trickster subclass for Rogues. This progression rate is closer to what a Half Caster had in 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons.
