Sotek is the Serpent God of the Lizardmen and particularly has a fondness for the Skinks, a number of whom are born with the special red crest that denotes them as the favoured of the God.

For the most part, the Gods of the Lizardmen are the Old Ones, the creators of many of the races of the Warhammer Fantasy world and who the Slann directly obeyed in their masters' quest to make the world a nice and happy place. After the great disaster the Old Ones vanished, only to be now revered as the Gods of the Lizardman race. Sort of like ancestor worship then.

Sotek is different. He was not one of the original Old Ones and appears to be something different; a god born like those of the other races from the collective thoughts, beliefs and emotions of the Lizardmen and the Skinks in particular. This worries the Slann has they can't decide if Sotek is truly benevolent to the Lizardmen or not or whether he is a part of the plan of the Old Ones, which the Slann are trying to continue to carry out (and miserably failing at doing so).

Due to this the Slann have spend a long time trying to figure out what Sotek is and continue to do so, centuries after his coming. Being so long aged doesn't give the frogmen a reason to get a hurry on.

Sotek is a cool god, regularly trolling the Horned Rat, the God of the Skaven race who Sotek is the direct rival to. Sotek was born during the Plague Wars between the Skaven of Clan Pestilens and the Lizardmen, who fought to save their cities from the plagues unleashed by the festering pusbags. The signs of the birth of the new god were nigh, having being prophesied long before, and when Sotek was born, he rose up as a huge ass serpent and unleashed a wave of snake pain against the Skaven, the land covered in a carpet of snakes and lizards. The Skaven quite sensibly pissed themselves and ran out of Lustria towards the Southlands and then up northwards to make contact with their brethren.

Since then Sotek has been the primary patron god of the Lizardmen race and in exchange for a few Skaven hearts here and there (which are like after eight dinner mints to him) he grants the Lizardmen nifty powers and helps them beat up more Skaven. After he drove out the Skaven from Lustria, it is said he went after them and now haunts their tunnels, running his own pest control service in keeping the ratmen population down.

Interestingly, the twin-tailed comet is seen by the lizardmen as the sign of Sotek, representing his tongue. It was present at the birth of the God and is a great omen to the Lizardmen. The Empire of Men see the comet at the symbol of their God Sigmar (as one was also present on the day of his birth) and the presence of it always heralds the birth of a new powerful hero (see Valten). Considering this, this has implications that the Gods are either close bros (both enjoy beating up the Horned Rat) or are the same god, being different reflections to the different races that worship them. Nothing is known for certain but it would be interesting to see more fluff on this.
