Yet another greentext collaborative storytelling / worldbuilding exercise in the 40K universe by /tg/, similar to Stercus Ludicrum, Tiddius Majoris, and many others, but this time with moderate amounts of coordination, and a heavy emphasis on fleshing out the region in which most of the action takes place, with one anon in particular going the extra mile. The original thread started out with the Imperials engaging Chaos in brutal trench warfare (thus the name, which roughly means Damned Mud), but over the course of 8 main threads and several minor ones, basically every major faction, and several minor ones, are fought, over many different terrains and environs. (sorry Stannimposter if you were already working on a page, I got tired of waiting, feel free to edit this one).
Characters:
There are 100+ minor and major reoccurring characters to keep track of if you want to go full autist, some of whom will disappear for entire threads only to reappear like nothing happened, be presented as a minor character for several threads before suddenly becoming a main character, receive lots of character development only to disappear mid-thread, never to return, etc. The below section is extremely useful for keeping track of who is who, since even the most dedicated posters sometimes forgot. I tried to achieve a balance of humor and detail, with particular emphasis on noting when characters appear, disappear and reappear without giving away too much plot. Currently a work in progress. Feel free to add details. POV stands for Point of View, refers to posts and characters whose story is told in 1st person rather than from the point of view of other characters. POV characters are generally the main characters with the most development.
ASTARTES
- The Imperial Fists 5th Company: Aside from their rivalry with the Ultramarines in thread 1, they are generally depicted in a lore-friendly manner, with many posts depicting them dealing with problems via intelligent use of squad tactics, or providing inspiration to the endless waves of Guardsmen, PDF, and militia that help defend the planet.
- Brother Sammos (later Sergeant): The most compassionate of the Fists (relatively speaking), sometimes goes out of his way to aid the
cannon fodderGuardsmen and PDF. Gives a good speech when needed. - Sergeant Gereon Paulicus (later Lieutenant): The other main Fist POV character, fairly by the book except that his inner monologue is sometimes riddled with profanity. Dislikes Cato Fucking Shitarius. Despite his tough exterior, is prone to mourning the (typically high) losses by Imperial forces. Casts a good fist. One of the few characters that gets at least one POV post in every thread.
- Chaplain Sixtus Egillmann: Mostly a background character, but gets several POV posts in thread 2. Good at clubbing the Enemies of Mankind. Can be quite unorthodox and cunning when needed.
- Captain Maluan: Commander of 5th company. Gets no POV posts, but is often mentioned doing stuff elsewhere. Is a BAMF who can go toe to toe with Daemon Princes.
- Brother Saegon, Sergeant Retker, Sergeant Ignatus (Devastator), Brother Immalrik, Sergeant Allemannus (Tactical): Background characters.
- Brother Sammos (later Sergeant): The most compassionate of the Fists (relatively speaking), sometimes goes out of his way to aid the
- The Black Templars: Violence fanatics, their MO generally involves crushing everything in their path in a wave of homicidal rage. They are uncomfortable with the alliance with the Eldar and are sometimes seen attacking them with little provocation. In thread 5 they acquire a large number of vehicles and go on a rampage.
- Marshal Hans: Foul mouthed leader of the Templars. Typically found killing things. Last POV post was thread 5, but mentioned in thread 7. Often referred to only by his title, even in POV posts. Sometimes referred to just as Hans, a name he shares with a certain Guardman.
- Initiate Reiger: Assigned to watching Priscilla, and later wears a top hat and bow tie for some reason. Last appears in thread 5.
- Chaplain Camillus: First appears as an unnamed Chaplain in thread 7.5, but given a name in the next thread. Loves bombastically shouting, particularly the words heresy, heretic, and Emperor.
- The Ultramarines: First appear in thread 1 as a bunch of glory stealing cunts whose actions repeatedly induce rage in the POV characters. They seem to have withdrawn from the planet after thread 1, and only return in thread 7. Their depiction in the threads is probably one of the few things that are impossible to reconcile with canon material, but Cato-maid is arguably worth it.
- Captain Manius Domitius Pulcherius: Very first character from the very first thread. He doesn't last long though since his credit stealing tendencies provoke a swarm of Imperial Guard tanks to "accidentally" run him over. Ironically Cato would have stolen credit for anything he stole credit for anyways.
- Cato Sicarius: Only slightly more arrogant than the canon version. Prone to self-aggrandizing speeches. Suffers a humiliating defeat in thread 1 and briefly appears as a maid in thread 2, because reasons.
- Ortan Cassius: Latecomer who shows up in thread 7 and helps redeem the Ultramarines' reputation with his knowledge of Tyranids. Has a low opinion of the Primaris Marines under his command.
- The Iron Hands: Nameless Techmarine, Brother Aithne, Iron Father Primus Frater. Bunch of Iron Hands who show up in thread 2 to fortify the remains of a titan, haven't been seen since aside from a very brief mention in thread 3.
- Brass Vipers Chapter: Western themed chapter including Captain Jebediah Weston, and Brothers Robbins, Charles, Arthur, and Johnny Cash (Dreadnought). Appear in thread 3 and are supposedly wiped out by the end of that thread, though Weston is revealed to be alive in thread 5.
IMPERIAL GUARD
- Armageddon 70th Tank regiment: Contains a mix of armored and mechanized regiments, with plenty of super-heavies. They seem to work closely with the "defective" Krieg, though it is unclear if it is a mixed regiment.
- Maus Tank / Armageddon Baneblade crew: The Maus tank is a real world inspired experimental tank considered to be roughly the equivalent of a Baneblade. It was originally supposed to be a Krieg tank, but then someone complained that Armageddon would make more sense, and that the use of WW2 phrases made no sense, so the tank was retconned to be an Armageddon tank, with a "defective" Krieg commander in mixed "defective" Krieg / normal Steel Legion formation. Needless to say other posters got confused and the crew is alternately referred to as Krieg and Steel Legion depending on the poster. The Maus is destroyed and most of the crew transfer to a Baneblade called Tochter von das Eisenlanz. It is later revealed that the Baneblade has an Improbability Drive stuck to it, and is therefore renamed Die Großfürstin to better reflect it killing potential.
- Tank Commander Diederich Karl-Heinz Kaoskötter: Commander of the Maus in the 1st thread, having borrowed it from Hans who was in another tank at the time. Has a power sword called Kaoskötter. Thinks and speaks in a mix of profanity, German, and German profanity. He transfers to a Macharius following the loss of the Maus, where he spends much of thread 1. POV character in 1st thread, sometimes referenced or appears in other threads.
- Baneblade Tank Commander Hans Heinrich Hochberg: Commander and main Armageddon Baneblade POV character from 3rd thread onward. Refers to his tank as "Lady".
- Oswald Aspdorfer: Tactical officer. Gets a few POV posts in thread 1, occasionally referenced afterwards. Close friends with Techy.
- Other crewmen: Karsten (primary gunner), Hermann (tertiary gunner), Georg (driver), Heinrich (tertiary loader), Techy (Tech-Priest).
- Other Steel Legion Tank Commanders:
- Colonel Gustaf Adalwolf Vylk: Only referred to by name in the thread 7.6, commander of the regiment.
- Leman Russ Commander Anshelm: Has been spotted repeatedly in compromising situations with an Eldar Howling Banshee.
- Friedrich: Tank commander who is fond of "loyalist metal" music.
- Leman Russ Commander Johann, Stormlord Tank Commander Volgatov, Tank Commander Kirchenbach, Macharius Tank Commander Josef, Tank Commander Linden, Hellhound Tank Commander Crazy Carl, various others. Minor characters.
- Other Steel Legion:
- Corporal, later Sergeant Amarus Instantius. POV character, later Gue'vasa'la traitor. Referred to simply as the "Steel Legion Corporal" for first couple of posts.
- Major Ritter: Typically found communicating with Paulicus, unclear if he is in the 70th.
- Kriegers: The Krieg General, Krieger 143342523, and many other nameless Kriegers. Typical Kriegers doing typical Krieger stuff like trying to level the whole region with ordnance or surrounding the latrines with wire and mines.
- 78th Risian Light Infantry: Trooper Monica Jernwick. Unfortunate Imperial Guard soldier who repeatedly gets the rough end of the stick and is living proof that life in the Imperial Guard sucks. Starts out somewhat cowardly, but is mostly resigned to her fate in later threads. Accumulates an impressive number of injuries. One of a few characters who gets at least one POV post in every thread. Although several images are used for her she is consistently red-haired.
- 1st Happy Ending Regiment: This oddly named regiment was formed from refugees from a nearby paradise world that got overrun by daemonic forces. Although originally poorly equipped, they use their wealth and influence to steadily acquire better equipment and accommodations. The regiment's name is a reference to a beech party themed greentext story, which depicts the loss of Happy Ending to Slaanesh. http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/67207516/
- Captain Priscilla Von Hansburg, 4th Baroness of Bluven. Luckless and slightly snooty noble born officer who has appeared in several other greentext series. She often finds herself in separated from her troops in dangerous or compromising positions. Fond of her CRASSUS ARMORED ASSAULT TRANSPORT. Her senior sergeant Cliveton and her adjutant Chastity are also occasionally mentioned. Although multiple images are used for her, she is generally depicted as brown haired, blue eyed, to the point where images are altered to match this theme.
- The Praetorians: Frequently mentioned, appear to be present on the planet in multi-regimental force. Their POV characters use a mix of archaic and modern British slang.
- Captain Victoria Appleton, Baneblade Commander: Eccentric, but generally sensible, heavy tank commander. More British than the Queen. Usually found in command of the Baneblade Her Majesty's Majestic Lion, but is briefly demoted to squad leader of a multi-regimental squad of recon specialists based on ethnic stereotypes.
- Major Urquhart: Sometimes mentioned in Paulicus posts.
- 531st Cadian Regiment: Regiment of the three main POV described below. Later absorb parts of the 78th Risian and random refugees.
- Head Field Chirurgeon Octavious Graves: Badass but kindhearted medic. Often found patching up Monica's injuries.
- Guardsman Lew: Sister of Battle fearing pyromaniac. Is naturally assigned to be a liaison with the SoB. Somehow isn't killed by them.
- Commissar Dell Lugermorph: Friendly Commissar with an inclination towards insane schemes, including making a corpse wall, blowing up his own latrines, tactical avalanches, using a vortex grenade in close combat, and trying to get the Tau to withdraw in exchange for a single low-tier Water Caste girl, and when that didn't work, tried to raid the Tau capital city to capture more Water Caste so he wouldn't have to execute the one he imprisoned.
- 917th Cadian Regiment: Commissar Mathias Marc. Ass-kicking Commissar who disappears early in thread 1.
- The Tallarns: Navid Navar, Rushdi el-Qasim, Al-Zahin. Life sucks when you are a desert dweller posted on a mud world. Only get a few POV posts, rarely mentioned afterwards.
- Other Guardsmen: Charles and Thomas, typical Guardsmen doing Guardsmen stuff. Munitorum Field Test Observer, bureaucrat turned killing machine. Only appear in thread 2.
INQUISITION
- Inquisitor Zeke The 84th: Developer of experimental tanks.
- Inquisitor Andreas: Mentioned in thread 2, probably also the nameless Inquisitor who tries to order an orbital bombardment.
- Inquisitor Janus Invictus: Mentioned once in thread 3, probably the nameless Inquisitor who has Arthur Harris arrested.
- Inquisitor Lupanarium: Relies heavily on henchmen like Antonius, Gillian, and Hiems. Dies offscreen sometime during or between thread 5 and 6.
- Inquisitor Leonpines Edric of the Ordo Xenos: Trigger happy puritan who uses Deathwatch as primary henchmen. Really hates Xenos. Major POV character from thread 4 onward.
- Lord Inquisitor Gregor von Rosen: Previously appeared in a past greentext thread as a humble storm trooper. Obsessed with the Stonehenge super weapon, fond of spamming specialized Guard units at opponents. Henchmen include Jackinus, Julianus, and Inquisitorial Tempestor Prime George "Solidus" Sears. Major POV character from thread 5 onward.
IMPERIAL NAVY
- Admiral Gregorius Markus Agrippa Falkar: Commander of the Imperial Navy forces stationed around the planet. Appears when something needs to be blown up in space or via orbital bombardment.
- Antonius: Pilot, later joins the warband of Inquisitor Lupanarium, then returns to being a pilot after Lupanarium's death.
- Ace Thuderbolt Pilot (later Wing Commander) Laurentz Foulke: Does cool pilot stuff. Sent to hospital for several months after being caught in the duel between the C'tan and the Titan, possible brief later appearance.
- Arthur "Et Ignis in Nocte" Harris: Squad leader of the XIVth "Lancasters" Marauder Squadron of the Praetorian airforce. Brief appearance on thread 1 before becoming a major character in later threads. Is court marshaled in thread 3, reappears in threads 7 for some interesting plot twists.
ADEPTA SORORITAS
- Sister Palatine Farnese: Appears in thread 3 to serve as foil to Arthur Harris.
- Sister Bios: Subordinate to Sisters Farnese and Kaybord, primary Sisters POV character from thread 4 onward. Has to put up with both Lew, and a mysterious sniper who aids her on multiple occasions. Mostly by the book, but fond of cheering up depressed guardswomen by torching dead heretic and xenos. Also may be a little too fond of drink.
- Sisters Haydidi, Peasu, Grace, and the ill tempered Sister Dapter: Bios's colleagues
- Kaybord: Bios's rarely mentioned direct superior
OTHER IMPERIALS
- Rogue Trader Stannim Lherzon: Rival of Orko. Key POV character in some threads, while in others he only appears occasionally to instigate money-making schemes after being stranded groundside while waiting for ship repairs. Tolria was one of his crew before becoming defacto leader of the Eldar. Captain of the It's Just Business (AKA the IJB) and uses a mix of henchmen when needed, including two Ogryn; Dick and Dom.
- Pig Shit Farmer: First appears as a humble farmer, later promotes himself to Archbishop. Defacto commander of a large angry militia. Has a cat. Plot twist in final threads.
- Skitarii Alpha Primus Sigma-32b/c: Autokrator commander: Primary Skitarii POV. Upgraded after a fight with a Tomb Lord. Disappears for a bit, but makes an epic comeback in the final threads.
- Hillbillies: Clyde and John Miller: Comic relief characters from thread 2. Only want to be left alone in their swamp, drink beer, and maybe become "friends" with the neighboring Swamp Exodite Eldar but keep getting drawn into the commotion. Briefly appear in some later threads
- The Swamp Boat Captain: Imperial Navy Captain who is ordered to create a "swamp boat" for surface use. Eventually returns to his ship and unsuccessfully rams Falkar's ship in a fit of rage.
- Imperial Assassins: Vindicares Telius Katar and LIIIVX: Occasionally mentioned assassins. Eversor D-10 RAP3: Eversor unleashed on Liveria, presumed dead. Callidus Delta 1546 Epsilon: Master of disguise, thirsty for a certain Tau.
- Jackson, Frank, Mary, Leydas: Radio host and reporters respectively for the Groxbridge Radio Network (GRN) radio station. Appear to comment on events and play situational music.
- Arbites Frank: Groxbridge law enforcer typically found fighting whatever baddies have overrun Groxbridge in this months' episode/clusterfuck.
- Colonel Lekatariba: Long-suffering leader of a local PDF regiment.
- Clicky the Psyker: Just wants to be somewhere else.
CHAOS
- The Iron Warriors: Warsmith Karasseus and Sarat. One of the main antagonists, later reduced to insurgents. Sarat reappears in a later thread to lead the insurgency, but Karasseus himself never reappears, as Sarat bitterly complains several times. Likely in hiding.

ToddMoonsoon.
- Moonsoon, Loyal Chaos Lord of The Master of Schemes: Tzeentchi Commander in threads 5 and 7.

- Im'afuc'kin Ner'dvir'jin: Three guesses which God this loser serves.
- Daemon Prince Thypptyklpt, Arch Dissembler of Tzeentch, the Two Headed God, the Betrayer of Schemers, the Collector of Souls: JUST AS PLANNED? As in his previous greentext appearance, he gets hyped up a lot, avoids conflict, then trolls everyone by leaving.
XENOS
- The Freebootas: Freeboota Orko uv Dakkamark and a wide range of followers including Grinzy duh Grot, Joh Orkliutt, Nob Gobzog, Slashzi, Duh Red Nob, Bugguruh, Bomba Orkiz, and Kommando Kohdork and his fellow Kommandos. One of main antagonists up until Orko's defeat. Following this orks only appear as minor opponents.

- The Necrons: Lychguard Zaret Thal, takes charge of Necron forces when can't find his Lord. Goes back to sleep at end of thread 2. Flayed One, miniboss from thread 2. Nyadra'zatha, Arsonist of the Webway, C'tan who serves as final boss of thread 2. Obliterated by a falling starship (starships crashing into the planet is a reoccurring theme in earlier threads). Necrons return in thread 3 as major antagonists with several minor named characters, but have all but disappeared from thread 4 onward.
- The Tau: Major antagonists from threads 3 to 6, but only possess a few minor POV characters. Aun'El Dar'Shum: rarely mentioned commander in thread 3. Shas'O Fi'rios Lad'Ai: rarely mentioned commander in threads 5 and 6. Big Tiddy Water Caste Girl / Por'Saal Bi'Tidiis: obvious fapbait / hostage from threads 6 and 7.
- The Craftworld Eldar: Ranger Tolria: Originally an Outcast of Alaitoc and companion of Lherzon, later roped into the Eldar Task Force as a Ranger and through events becomes its de facto leader. Can't hold her liquor. Tank enthusiast Belrith, Banshee/slut Eleria, Guardian (later Avenger) Chaya, Avenger Dillen: Squadmates of Tolria on missions, with Eleria being definitely "involved" with Anshelm. Farseer Kerala: A Farseer from Alaitoc, longtime friend of Tolria. Speaks in a very stilted manner. Guardian Bunni: Hapless latecomer to the party from a minor craftworld.
- Dracon Wyen'dala: Lazy, degenerate, and extremely eccentric leader of the local Drukhari forces, the mercenary Kabal of the Frozen Heart. Has an ill-tempered gyrinx.
- Sybarite Trys'ta: One of Wyen'dala's sex-obsessed, henchwomen. Becomes the de facto ambassador and spokeswoman of the Drukhari, a role she finds boring and tidious.
- Nameless Haemonculus and subject 9114: Mad science at its best. The exact nature of 9114 is unclear.
- Rak'Gols: Show up near end of thread 1, never mentioned again
- Genestealers: Appear in thread 6, lead by Patriarch Krezial, defeated with minimum effort largely offscreen
- Stryxis and Enoulians: Show up in thread 6, defeated in orbit after brief battle, though at least one Stryrix survives to cause trouble in thread 7.
- The Tyranids: Main antagonists in threads 7

World Building
Thanks mostly to the efforts of the anon known as Stannimposter, the world of Damnatus Lutum has more background material and maps then 99.99% of canon worlds:

Aside from a few doodles, the thread attracted no dedicated drawfags. However, several anons used photoshop-type software to create unique images when google searches failed to locate images relevant to the thread. Over time some distinct styles emerged, see examples below:
