Reputation is a rarely seen game mechanic that can be thought of as a kind of social equivalent to hit points. In a nutshell, reputation measures your general standing in either the public perception, the eyes of a faction you belong to, or both; the higher your Reputation, the more you are respected and admired, and this has positive effects, like making it easier to find help or getting you preferential treatment. Inversely, the lower your Reputation, the worse you are thought of, and the more you will struggle.
