Even the most famous illustration of The Empire has them.

In the realms of Warhammer Fantasy the spear is a weapon older than mankind - I mean the Lizardmen have them so ‘nuff said. It is easy to use because all you have to do is poke things, is easy enough for the average dullard peasant to learn how to use, cheap because it’s just a pointy stick but is essential for fending of large foes or cavalry if you’re too cheap to opt for halberds. It is no surprise that Empire Spearmen are a common sight among imperial armies.

Equipped with a cheaply manufactured spear, a formation of peasant spearmen makes an excellent defensive unit, unless of course you’re so cheap they don’t have shields and someone starts shooting at them. Then they’re just a giant blob of future worm food, and to avoid that being the case, unshielded spearmen should run away or charge - charging of course being the most manly.

Spearmen are more common in the northern provinces due to the cheapness of the spear's manufacture, the cheapness of the lords, the larger proportion of slow witted people and idiots populating the north, and the lack of large-scale industry to field and maintain comparatively more expensive troops like halberdiers and handgunners.

In the southern provinces, the longer and killy-er halberds are preferred for being ideal in defensive and offensive situations, particularly because they are affordable here and the general populous can be trusted with a weapon that’s more advanced than just a pointy stick for poking.
