Artist's rendition of the Ultramarines honouring their True Spirtual Liege.

Matthew Ward is a writer working for GW, but first and foremost he is an Ultrasmurfs fanboy. Of note, he is primarily responsible for the widely despised fluff of Codex: Space Marines 5th edition, which is basically a Codex full of Ultramarines fanfiction. About half of the Fluff and Crunch was centered around the Ultramarines, with the fluffy bits portraying the Ultramarines as second to the Emprah in nearly all regards. In some cases, certain special characters are "rumored" to rival the Emperor's power.

Matt Ward is notorious for awful, atrocious fluff wrting above all else. Until recently he was also known for writing codices that reflected his points of view more than they focused on balance. The Warhammer Fantasy Daemon codex is the biggest offender, reputed to have broken the entire game single-handedly merely because Ward thought daemons should be awesome like that. These days, however, he does a good job with the crunch most of the time, although he always sprinkles in a bit of frustrating retardation here and there just to get people's panties in a bunch. Aside from wanking constantly over Ultramarines, he's also responsible for the fluff that has caused /tg/ to announce that the Blood Angels and Necrons are totally bros 4 lyfe, seeing as how Matt Ward depicts the two factions teaming up to take down the Tyranids and then peacefully parting ways afterward.

Matt Ward will always be mentioned and cursed openly any time Space Marines are discussed in a thread on /tg/. He has become the iconic figure viewed as everything that is wrong about the 40k game these days. Overhyping a single faction, constantly blowing stories so far out of proportion that they lose all context, contantly trying to one up the last bullshit with an even less believable story, and not really giving a damn about what any of the other players think of what he does. Some posters on /tg/ will say that Matt Ward is the true death of 40k, as if he were one of the horsemen of the apocalypse, riding ahead on an endless wave of Space Marine releases that alienate every Xenos player until there are none left.

As of February 27, 2011, he is known to be writing the Grey Knights codex. One big question about writing this codex was, if the Ultramarines are already the best out therr and their fluff is overdone to the point of enciting rage, how the hell is Matt going to write about the Grey Knights, a chapter that is literally, in canon, the best of the best? A bit of leaked fluff gave us the answer: he'll do it like the total asshole that he is. Gray Knights roam around carving their names in the daemon hearts of daemon primarchs, an act unthinkable until Matt Ward said that it was done. Their mere farts destroy daemon worlds across the galaxy! It's awful! It's ridiculous! It's exactly what we've all come to expect out of Matt Ward.
