Unlike in other settings where some animals are dire simply because they're big or have spikes, Dire Wolves in WHFB are undead giant wolves brought back from the dead to serve their vampire masters. Created from the mass graves of giant wolves killed during The Empire's attempts to control their population, these burial sites were situated right in Sylvania so what happened next surprised literally no one, the giant wolves clawed their way out of the ground and gathered around the bases of the dark towers of the Vampire Counts, becoming their personal war hounds and harriers.
