Feyrs, sometimes also spelled Fihyrs, are a monster from Dungeons & Dragons which can be simply but accurately described as "living nightmares". No, seriously; they're literally a nightmare brought to life as an aberration by background magical energies. They now stalk humanoids to terrify them, as they feed on fear, as you'd expect of a living nightmare.
They're largely associated with the Forgotten Realms setting, since that setting was originally characterized as the "high magic" world compared to Greyhawk or Dragonlance. There is an article discussing their incorporation into Ravenloft in one issue of Quoth the Raven, however.
Originally, it was stated that there are two kinds of Feyrs; the "Common Feyr", the basic model, and the Greater Feyr", which is a more powerful version created when several Common Feyrs fuse together. It was subsequently retconned that there are actually four different kinds of fey; larval, lesser, common, and great. All feyrs are said to look something like a giant, disembodied brain covered in tentacles, eyes and fang-filled mouths, though the Ravenloft version of the feyr is recommended as taking on more customized forms based on its progenitor nightmare.
In case it's not obvious, yes, the name is literally pronounced "fear".
