This page details people, events, and organisations from the /tg/ Heresy, a fan re-working of the Warhammer 40,000 Universe. See the /tg/ Heresy Timeline and Galaxy pages for more information on the Alternate Universe.

The Legiones Astartes or Space Marine Legions were the primary armed forces of the Imperium during the Great Crusade. Their core forces were bodies of augmented soldiers, the products of the Emperor of Mankind's genetic experimentation on old Terra. But there were also ordinary men and women who supported the Space Marines or even fought beside them in the Auxilia formations of the Imperial Army.

Doctrine and Reforms

Much of the discipline and organisation of the early Legions owed greatly to the ancient and proven Terran patterns of strategy, hierarchy and function as laid down in the revered texts of the Principia Belicosa of Roma and Krom's fragmentary New Model that had survived in the hands of the Old Earth tyrants down the blood-stained generations. To these venerable treatises the Emperor and his commanders had added their own genius and created a sturdy but adaptable strategic framework that spoke to the fundamental strengths and superhuman abilities of the Legionaries themselves.

Following the disaster of the Hektor Heresy and the Imperial counter-offensive of the Great Scouring, Darius Cyaxares persuaded his brother Primarchs to lay down their Legions and break up these mighty armies, so that no one man would again lead the terrible might that Hektor had turned against the Imperium. In reforming the Space Marine Legions into smaller units, the wisdom of the Primarchs was combined. Thomas Gaudin, the Emperor's Praetorian, laid out the ethics of the Space Marines as unyielding loyalty, honour, and good faith. Gaspard Lumey, who stood at the fore of the greatest Legion, explained his tactical and organisational doctrine. Darius himself gave the instructions to govern Space Marine Librarians. The result was the Epitoma institutorum rei Adeptus Astartes - better known as the Institutorum Astartes - that laid the basis for the Space Marine Chapters of the reformed Imperium.

Eyes of the Emperor What if a Space Marine Legion did know fear? The Eyes have a proud history but their one big flaw sees them struck from the history books. Knights of Justice We do have a lot of knightly legions, but the KoJ epitomize the Space Marine as knight-errant and justicar, the peerless bastion of truth, honour, and leaping out of a helicopter. If you like that, these are the guys for you. If you hate that, you can enjoy it when their Primarch goes down like a bitch on Isstvan V. Under new management, slowly being worked on Eternal Zealots What if you wanted to heal the galaxy, but the galaxy was the fucked up place of 30k and you were working for the growing Imperium? Sand Keepers Loyalist psyker legion ahoy! Scale Bearers Do you like Space Marines? Do you like Dinosaurs? Do you think guys in power armour riding literal dinosaurs would be a bit silly? Don't worry - the dinosaur theme goes to the look of their bikes, not their trusty steeds. They also have giant lizard companions ("Sors"), at least in the early days. active Horns of Ruin ASTARTES SMASH!!! Scions of Europa Meet the stubbornmarines. The Scions pride themselves on never retreating except in the most dire of circumstances. Silver Cataphracts AAAAAAHH, MOTHERLAND!!! Hailing from Space Russia and led by a Primarch who combines the "best" features of Stalin and Ivan the Terrible, the Cataphracts are probably the most fatalistic of the Astartes. frighteningly active Iron Rangers I sure hope you like ruthless assassins and stealth. Steel Marshals The inevitable loyalist siege legion. Surprisingly laid back and chill guys, for a group of super-soldiers who spend their time fighting their enemies eye-to-eye. active but busy Life Bringers Biological nightmare Legion, goes over to Nurgle. Stone Men The Stone Men are a throwback to the gonzo days of Rogue Trader. It's great terrible awe-inspiring beyond description! off his meds and in the community Lions Rampant Victorian English hypocrites, avowing restraint and gentlemanliness but belonging entirely to Slaanesh. active
Thunder Kings Based on a world of clannish Celtic primitives, the Thunder Kings split apart in the Heresy and spend the next centuries killing each other. They're a bit like a cheerier version of the Dark Angels with a less obscure gay culture reference. Taken over again, third time's the charm Mastodontii Siberian/Inuit Marines with HUEG tanks. Void Angels HONHONHON, ve are ze Space Marines Français! The Void Angels are a smug bunch but they do get shit done. Skirmish level (Warhammer 40k using the Forge World "Horus Heresy" material)

This is the base game for the AU. All of the Legions above can be assumed to use the Legiones Astartes Crusade list, with modifications and special characters covered on the individual pages.

Naval warfare (Battlefleet Gothic)

Before the Imperial Reformation, there was no Imperial Navy with control over the Imperium's warships. Therefore, the Legiones Astartes controlled powerful battlefleets, not limited to the battle barges and strike cruisers that the later Space Marine Chapters would employ.

Capital Ships

Basileus-class Battle Barge (440 points)

Forsaking the heavy armour protection of the other Legion battle barges, the massive Basileus class was designed as a second-wave assault ship. Its cavernous interior can hold vast quantities of material, to be delivered to the surface of a planet via its great launch bays. During the Hektor Heresy, these rare vessels were often employed as fleet carriers.

Infernus-class Battleship (325 points)

One of the true monsters of the Legion Fleets, the Infernus mounts a deadly spinal Exo-Lance weapon capable of vaporizing a cruiser with a single shot.

Tiamat-class Shield Bastion (270 points)

The Tiamat Class is the most heavily armored of all the classes of warships employed in the Great Crusade. Meters upon metres of armor lie beneath thick banks of Void Shields, making it difficult to knock out. However it sacrifices armament and speed for this.

The Victory Class is a heavy ship of the line for the Legion Fleets, we’ll armed and armored and capable of facing off against most enemy opposition at long range.

Designed as a test bed for awesome new weaponry, most of the Charibdys class were hastily completed and rushed into service armed with tried and true armaments.

Inflexible-class Strike Cruiser (320 points)

The Inflexible was designed to meet the needs of far-ranging Expeditionary fleets for a powerful, high-endurance assault vessel. Initially planned to bridge the gap between the Basileus and the Olympia, the Design Synod re-calibrated the Inflexible after consulting with a number of Space Marine captains who had led long-range strikes. Trusting in the experience of these warriors, the Arch Magoi did away with the design's torpedo tubes and increased the strength of its heavy bombardment cannons.

Armiger-class Cruiser (160 points)

Swift and carrying a formidable array of lance weaponry, the Armiger was a mainstay of the Expeditionary fleets. Due to their short range and weak armour, most of these vessels were lost during the Hektor Heresy and the Great Scouring.

An old design, justly synonymous with the Emperor's great struggle to unite the human race, the Crusade could once be found in every corner of the Galaxy.

Dodona-class Strike Cruiser (165 points)

Some of the Legiones Astartes were reluctant to use orbital bombardment except in the most dire circumstances. The Dodona and similar classes fulfilled this preference by acting as a swift and durable platform for bombers and landing craft. The development of the Thunderhawk and Thunderhawk Annihilator greatly increased the popularity of this vessel.

Hellfire-class Lance Cruiser (230 points)

The Hellfire was a type of cruiser entirely armed with heavy lance weaponry, designed to be capable of carving apart even the most heavily armored warship after several bruising encounters with Core and Demiurg Warships during the mid stages of the Crusade. Difficult to build and with temperamental power conducts that needed constant replacing and limited the ships speed, this complex design was lost in the wake of the Hektor Heresy.

Spectre-class Warp Runner (25 points)

One of the swiftest vessels ever built by the Imperium, the Spectre served the Expeditionary Fleets in a variety of support roles. Most frequently, they would be sent ahead of the main body to gather up-to-date tactical intelligence before a main strike was launched.

Thunderbolt-class Heavy Frigate (60 points)

The Thunderbolt was an uncommon sight in the fleets of the Imperium, but its peculiar qualities made it much sought-after. It was quick and agile, but armed with a battery of lances the envy of many cruiser captains. If the heavy frigate was capable, it was not without its disadvantages. Due to the immense energy requirements of its armament, power couplings tended to burn out quickly and it was impossible to manoeuvre and keep the lances firing.

Although slow for an escort, the Vigil's powerful bombardment cannons often played a critical role in breaking down tough planetary defences.

You may include one Praetor. If your fleet includes any battleships, he must be assigned to a battleship in preference to a cruiser. If the Fleet is worth over 750 points, the Praetor must be included to lead it.

Notes: A light cruiser may upgrade to a Space Marine crew at a cost of +10 points.

You may include any number of escorts in your fleet.

Cobra Class Destroyer					30 points
Havoc Class Frigate					35 points
Nova Class Frigate					45 points
Spectre Class Warp Runner				25 points
Sword Class Frigate					35 points
Thunderbolt Class Heavy Frigate				60 points
Vigil Class Siege Frigate				40 points

Notes: An escort may be upgraded with a Space Marine crew at a cost of +5 points. (Note that the Nova Class does not automatically come with a Space Marine crew.)


ORDINANCE AND UPGRADES

Ships designated BB or SC are equipped with drop pods.

A ship with a Space Marine crew may; launch boarding torpedoes or regular torpedoes from its torpedo tubes, launch a mix of Thunderhawk Annihilators and Thunderhawks from its launch bays, and/or purchase an Honour Guard for +10 points.

A ship without a Space Marine crew may; launch regular torpedoes from its torpedo tubes, and/or launch a mix of Fury interceptors and Starhawk bombers from its launch bays.


ATTACK RATING

A fleet which contains only ships with the Space Marine crew upgrade has an attack rating of 3. Otherwise, the attack rating is 2.
