Waterdeep is one of the most famous cities of the Forgotten Realms setting for Dungeons & Dragons. Alongside the city of Neverwinter, it is one of the two largest, most prosperous and most famous cities to be found in Northwest Faerun, and of the two it is the most southerly. Situated on the Sword Coast, it lies south of the Sword Mountains and is in fact the second settlement one encounters after entering the North via the coast.

It is a massive commercial hub, and also a legendarily cosmopolitan city; regarded as a beacon of art and high culture, it is incredibly popular with artisans and scholars. Widely considered to be one of the most powerful and influential member-states of the Lord's Alliance that loosely controls the North, if not the most.

Features of note include the massive dungeon complex of Undermountain, inhabited by the insane archmage Halaster Blackcloak, the largest spelljammer port in all of Faerun, eight gargantuan golem defenders known as the Walking Statues of Waterdeep, and a resident archmage known by designated title as "The Blackstaff", after the artifact they carry as the symbol of their office.
