Background

Cynis Falen Xenjin was born into a large branch of the Falen family line (duh), on the east coast of the Blessed Isle, within the Imperial City itself. Like all Dynast children, he was educated in Reading, Writing, 'Rithmatic, and Immaculate Propoganda. As was expected of his line, he was fond of both the bow and the mandolin, and was eager to learn the various uses for a number of chemical substances and drugs; primarily consisting of his nightly exploration of the family's wine cellar.

At age nine, he was sent to a primary school to hone his archery. At age ten, he exalted during a very intense underground drinking contest to impress the ladies. At age fifteen, he graduated, and promptly retired to the impressive manse his family had gifted him as congratulations to throw numerous parties, drink his days away, and occasionally dabble in the family slave trade. For every year until his twenty-fifth birthday, he attended every single Gala held on the Isle, attended no less than 700 salons (most of which revolved primarily around heavy drinking, drugs, and enough fornication to potentially dilute the dragon-blooded exaltation into nonexistence, though occasionally he attended musicals). Most important, though, were Xenjin's own monthly wine-tastings, where Dynasts from around the Realm and even the occasional odd outsider were invited to share in his latest and greatest vintages.

A few months after he turned age twenty-five, Mnemon took the throne. A year later, the Cynis household, having far too many other far too valuable agents doing far too many actual things to further the cause of the House, drafted Xenjin into the newly-forming Imperial Experimental Weapons and Tactics Wing. Why they would be concerned with such military matters is unclear, though it is obvious to anyone with eyes that a weak and decadent House like Cynis will need to tarry quite a bit of favor to survive the upcoming maelstrom of an angrier, more militant Dynasty..

Xenjin, in the meantime, still somehow manages to find time to throw the occasional drinking party in between the brewing warfare within and without the Realm. Quietly, he questions the authority and legitimacy of the 'new' Empress, especially in the case of a stiff, uptight, and blatantly over-serious prude like Mnemon. Still, worrying about such matters is a hobby, at most; more important to Xenjin have been the rumors floating around of a legendary vintage, held greedily only by the highest of the selfish spirits that roam the land, granting them eternal health and lasting immortality. Even a single bottle of such an exquisite drink would more than complete Xenjin's collection, much less give him any number of interesting stories to tell at his next party..

Appearance

Standing at 5'9", Xenji is a strikingly handsome man, and quite obviously knows it. Bearing only the lightest tan from occasional wilderness excursions in the East (a mandatory part of his schooling,) his sharp, angular face always contains a casual grin. Gazing lazily out into the world, his eyes bear a vibrant, emerald green tone to them, always seemingly distant, hazy, or out-of-focus to account for his seemingly perpetual and varying levels of intoxication. His dark, oaken brown hair is short and ruffled, just enough to portray his casual demeanor, without coming off as overly lazy or sloppy. Indeed, his entire appearance is almost charmingly disorderly: his long-sleeved, loose-fitting green jacket, trimmed with gold and embroidered with a dragon and bearing the mark of Cynis (constantly open just enough to show the lean muscle of his bare chest), and broad, similarly-tailored trousers always seem just a bit out of disarray, either on account of some recent party, a few drinks, or a hardcore session of taking it easy on the couch. Protecting his bare feet from various nasty things like hard rocks and hot pavement are a pair of simple, wooden sandals, and if he's not carrying a bow on his person, then he's liable to have his simple, wooden mandolin strapped to his back - you can never be too prepared when attempting to woo whatever attractive Officers might be giving orders in the Wing.

Charms

  • (Resistance) Ox-Body Technique: -1/-2
  • (Archery) Dragon-Graced Arrow: 1m, Supplemental, C-OK, Elemental, Obvious. Enchants arrows with the power of a chosen element. Wood-powered shots are poisonous, doing 4L damage/action, Toxicity (Essence), and having a penalty of -0. Water: Struck opponents suffer a delay in their next action by three ticks, due to choking or other distractions.
  • (Archery) Swallows Defend the Nest: 1m per shot, C-OK, Extra Action. Magical flurry of up to (Essence) shots, suffering no multiple action penalties, ignoring rate, and having the DV penalty of only one attack.
  • (Archery) Dragonfly Finds Mate 1m, Reflexive (Step 5), C-OK, instant. User rolls (Dex+Arch) against the attacker's ranged attack roll, automatically parrying it if the roll equals or succeeds the attacker's. Does not count against charm use.
  • (Archery) Seven Year Swarm Volley: 3m/1WP + 1/ally defended, Simple, C-OK, Action-long. User increases allies' defense against ranged attacks by 1 for each success on a (Dex+Archery) roll, but the user cannot make any more non-reflexive actions until his next action.
  • (Archery) Sparrow Dives At Hawk: 4m/1WP, C-OK, Counterattack. Permanently enhances Dragonfly Finds Mate; user may spend 4m/1WP during the counterattack phase to launch an unblockable, undodgable attack with successes equal to what was left over from the DFM roll. Does not count against charm use.
  • (Archery) Harvest of the Hunter: 2m personal, C-OK, Simple. Produces arrows from the environment.
  • (Archery) Unobstructed Hunter's Aim: 4m/1WP(optional), Reflexive (Step 3), C-OK. Archery attack automatically penetrates wooden cover at base cost, and penetrates all cover for an additional 1WP. Targets lose the user's (essence) in DV bonuses from cover as a result.
  • (Archery) Life-Swelling Sap Strike: 3m, Supp, C-OK, Holy. Projectile sprouts leaves and vines that deal agg to undead; including ghosts, walking corpses, and necromantic warmachines; this charm strikes incorporeal undead as though they were solid. At Essence 4+, this charm also affects any CoD with an Essence equal to or lower than the DB's.
  • (Archery) Ravenous Thorn Technique: 3m, Supplemental, C-OK, Obvious. Weapon ammo sprouts roots and creepers that bore into the target's body, dealing (Base Arrow Damage) or 4L if the ammo has no base damage (e.g. firewands, essence cannons), ignoring armor soak. This damage occurs again every five ticks and cannot be healed until it is removed by a (Dex+Med) roll at a difficulty equal to the Essence of the archer.
  • (Dodge) First Dodge Excellency +1 surcharge
  • (Dodge) Safety Among Enemies: 3m, 1WP, +1 Surcharge. Reflexive, C-OK. Any attack made against the user that the user has at least half a DV of the attack pool misses, and instead hits another target designated by the user.
  • (Socialize) 1st Socialize Excellency
  • (Socialize) Sweeten-the-Tap Method 2m, Emotion, Scenelong. Improves the quality, strength, and taste of all nearby alcohol, decreasing the difficulty of any Socialize rolls against the drinkers for one scene and reducing the MDVs of affected subjects by one.
  • (Socialize) Warm-faced Seduction Style 1m, social, C-OK, emotion, Supplemental. Increases relevant social ability by either 5 or double its normal rating (whichever is less) during seduction attempts (counting toward dicecaps), but increases +2 MDV for targets who Don't Swing That Way. This effect is UMI, 1WP to resist.
  • (Socialize) Friend-to-All-Nations Attitude 2m, C-OK, Simple, Social, Scenelong. Ignores all social penalties for being a foreigner so long as the character can speak the language; otherwise, removes up to (Essence) penalties.
  • (Perform) 1st Performance Excellency
  • (Perform) Soul-Stirring Performance Method: 5m 1WP, Supplemental, C-OK, Compulsion, Emotion. Player supplements a (Charisma+Performance) attack to instill a deep-seated emotion or single compulsion in an audience of mortals. Normal mortals are completely defenseless against this effect if successful, heroic mortals may resist using their MDV against the user's (Manip+Perform). This costs 3WP to resist and may affect subjects with an Essence rating less than the user's. Instilling emotion causes targets to suffer -2 MDV against social attacks that prey on that emotion.
  • (Perform) New Voice Technique: 2m, Simple, C-OK, Scenelong. User rolls (Perception+Perform) in an attempt to perfectly duplicate a particular sound or voice with their own; with human voices generally difficulty 1, unusual animals as 2-3, and really freaky stuff as high as difficulty 5. Automatically fools animals trained to react to the voice and even close acquaintances of the person, unless subject possesses advanced hearing charms to discern the difference.

Xenjin Special Reserve
Dragon-Graced Arrow - Swallows Defend the Nest - Ravenous Thorn Technique
To those with less-than-developed resistances (or innate Wood Aspect immunities, as the case may be,) the average level of alcohol that Xenjin consumes in a few hours, much less an entire day, could be considered most definitely toxic. Funneling his dangerously-high blood alcohol content into the natural Essence used to enhance his attacks, Xenjin produces a particularly-deadly shot from his ranged weapon of choice, creating a spray of lethal fire that leaves victims in a variety of states, from swaggeringly-dazed to outright poisoned. Rumor has it that just a drop of the Despot's reserve can create this special reaction instantly, which might explain why Xenjin still hasn't finished his last bottle...

Like any secret technique used by legendary warriors, this attack carries disadvantageous side-effects if strained too far, such as a sudden, jarring sobriety.

Inventory

  • Green Jade Hearthstone Bracers (Art 2)

A gift Xenjin received in exchange for one of his finest bottles of wine at a salon some years ago, these bracers, crafted from green jade, depict a twisting dragon wreathed in ivy, with the socket for the hearthstone where the dragon's eye would be.

  • Dragonfly's Ranging Eye (Art 2)

Made for military use, this Dragonfly Ranging Eye is relatively unremarkable - a simple square lens of adamant, with an ever-so-thin layer of green jade, that goes over the right eye. This particular model was acquired fairly recently for a large sum of Xenjin's family fortune for his upcoming enlistment in the Wing. For 3m, the Dragonfly's Ranging Eye is attuned and worn, and at will the user can shift his perspective through that eye anywhere within (Essence x 20) yards. Doing so imparts a -1 internal penalty to Perception rolls. This particular model also grants its user Essence Sight when attuned, both for normal and remote viewing.

  • A TON OF MONEY

Self-explanatory.

  • A perfect mandolin (Resources 4)

When you are very rich and very bored on off-days, you may decide to buy something very dumb and unworkable, then learn how to use it anyway. And that's exactly what Xenjin did when he bought a hefty mandolin wrought from the finest, polished wood, depicting five dragons soaring across its surface, with strings wrought from gold, which is probably a bad idea for string instruments, but who cares. It counts as perfect tools for the Performance ability, adding 2 dice to rolls with said ability.

  • A Perfect Self-bow, broadhead arrows

A graduation present from the family when he graduated from secondary school, this is about as good as mortal bows can get. Carved to a perfect curve, well-polished to a distinct sheen, and held with a bowstring that wouldn't snap if you took six chainsaws to it, Xenjin has gotten good use out of his personal bow on his rare outings to hunt bandits or rogue gods, especially given his poor reputation and therefore lack of access to the family panoply of artifacts..
