He originated from a 4chan banner ad (pictured) for Josh Lesnick's porno comic site Slipshine.
The fact that his original banner was specifically trying to appeal to women makes his title of "gay purple man" rather odd... Unless you're aware that significantly more gay men are attracted to his body type than straight women these days (for the body type that straight women generally are attracted to, see Dwarves).
