Spice and Wolf is a fantasy anime about a traveling merchant who is companions with a 600 year old wolf god who happens to to take the form of a 15 year old girl. It is unique in that it focuses heavily on economics and trade rather than common fantasy tropes like slaying goblins or casting spells. It inspired numerous world building threads on /tg/ devoted to emulating medieval economies.

Setting[edit]

Spice and Wolf is set in a low magic fantasy Western Europe analogue, right at the cusp of what would be the Renaissance in the real world. Black powder seems to be known, but use is not yet widespread enough to see the rise of the Medieval firearm.

Supernatural creatures like Holo are very real, but due to the influence of the Church, are considered little more than folklore or fairy tale, and as such no longer revered (hence why Holo wanted to go home back North with Lawrence). What magic in the series is limited to the shapeshifting abilities of Holo and her fellow "old gods", and even they rely on their wits and subterfuge to get by in the increasingly secular world.

As for the Church itself, its shown with some decent, even well-meaning members, but is mostly corrupt and self-serving.

Characters[edit]

Kraft Lawrence[edit]

The actual main character and narrator of the story, Kraft Lawrence is a 25-year old traveling merchant trying to earn enough scratch to finally settle down and marry. Much like his name implies, he's quite crafty and cunning as far as mortal merchants go, but at the same time no match for Holo's business savvy.

That said, he's fairly good natured, and won't stoop to dishonest deals when he can help it. He's also decidedly non-violent, which frustrates Holo to no end, as she sometimes wants to be play the damsel in distress, damnit.

A good part of the charm of the series is due to Lawrence's banter with Holo, and they do share great chemistry with each other. The other half of course is due to Lawrence's deal-making, and how he uses his wits to get favorable contracts.

Holo/Horo[edit]

Although her original form is that of a giant wolf the size of a house, she spends the majority of her time as a 10% furry wolfgirl, possessing the ability to return to her wolf form by ingesting blood or grain.

She is a minor goddess and, for a time, she was worshipped by a farming village and presided over their harvests. (though actually, she denies that she is a goddess and doesn't want to be worshiped as such, not unlike Our Manly Man-peror) The onset of more modern agricultural techniques and the spread of Christianity, however, leads the villagers to abandon and even resent her.

She thus determines to return to her homeland in the north, and engages the services of Kraft Lawrence in this endeavour, whereupon they have wacky commercial adventures and make many successful Bluff/Disguise checks involving ears, tails, and marital status.
