Promotions

If you were looking for the player character in Skyrim, then gb2/v/.

Dragonborn are a race from Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition, expanding upon a racial template idea from 3.5's Draconomicon. Created for the player's handbook on the principle that "the game is called Dungeons and Dragons, so wouldn't it be awesome if you could actually play a dragon-like race?", they attracted huge amounts of RAGE from /tg/ due to a combination of their replacing the iconic half-orc as the PHB1's "brute race" (oh, and also the gnome got booted for the tiefling, but seriously, who the fuck cares about gnomes?) and the fact females followed classic sexual dimorphism. Or, in other words, girl dragonborn have tits, and neckbeards got up in arms about it, in part due to the opinion that this made them a furry race - explanations in their racial book that dragonborn are monotremes, not reptiles (which dragons aren't really either), didn't help, and monotremes don't even have nipples or breasts anyway!

People who are more comfortable with vidya gaems will call dragonborn "Argonians," for the swamp-dwellers in The Elder Scrolls from the second game onward (they were just palette swapped humans in Arena so that game isn't mentioned). They appear in Skyrim as well, but this game also features you as the Dragonborn (person capable of stealing the souls from dragons, Highlander style), who does not have to be an actual lizard person. People who are old school neckgreybeards will call them "warm-blooded lizard-folk with breath weapons, and don't get a bonus to holding their breath for no good goddamn reason."

3.5's Dragonborn were a racial template, quite literally individuals of various humanoid races who underwent some sort of giant unbirthing ritual in order to pledge their loyalty to Bahamut, the god of metallic dragons. To do this they need to crawl inside some kind of giant egg and gestate for a bit. Ignoring for a moment that this is horrifying in its own right and that the splatbook with them tries to pass this whole process off as a good thing, they lose their Dragonborn forms if they willingly perform an evil act, which of course enforces the Heresy that it's good to be furry. They were also sterile as part of the transformation. Tiamat naturally had her own analogues based on melding Chromatic Dragon blood with various humanoids and animals, creating abominations called the Spawn of Tiamat.

Before dragonborn existed, the closest things were the Half-Dragons of 2nd and 3rd edition, which were literally "your mom (or, very rarely and in 3.x only, your dad) fucked a dragon!". 3.5 also included a draconic template, which made the blood relationship more distant (similar to tieflings, aasimar and genasi being the watered-down versions of half-fiends, half-angels and half-elementals).

Dragonborn survived the edition change to Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, and are pretty close to their 4e model, which for all its faults at least avoids the "Mary Sue with a side-order of squick" to be found in 3.5. As most of the early hatred has faded with time, and as the other "iconic" races are perfectly intact, they seem ready to stay for the long haul.

The loss of hatred is probably helped by the fact that Dragonborn fill a previously unfilled niche: Satisfying the "I wanna play a dragon!" itch without otherwise unbalancing the base game the way that Half-Dragons and the dragon "racial classes" did in earlier editions.

Dragonborn in 5e
* Ability Score: +2 Strength, +1 Charisma.
* Typical Alignment: Lawful Good or Chaotic Evil.
* Size: Medium. They are stated as growing to well over 6 feet in height and averaging about 250 pounds.
* Speed: 30 feet base walking speed.
* Draconic Ancestry: Choose one of the five Chromatic Dragons (Black, Blue, Green, Red, White) or Metallic Dragons (Brass, Bronze, Copper, Gold, Silver); this affects your other racial abilities.
* Breath Weapon: Your breath weapon's style (Blacks, Blues, Brasses, Bronzes and Coppers have Line type breath weapons; Golds, Greens, Reds, Silvers and Whites have Cones), damage type and the ability score used to save against it (Greens, Silvers and Whites attack Constitution, everything else attacks Dexterity) are all determined by your Draconic Ancestry.
* Damage Resistance: You have Resistance to the same damage type that you inflict with your Breath Weapon.
* Languages: Common and Draconic.

A highly self-sufficient and clannish race literally born of dragons, in that they were created from dragon eggs either by the draconic gods themselves or by powerful dragons. Some still serve as faithful servants, especially as soldiers, but many more are now without a purpose and try to find a reason for their existence. First generation dragonborn more strongly resembled their ancestors, especially in terms of scale color, but generations of interbreeding have created a more unified appearance, with common scale colors being brass, bronze, scarlet, rust, gold, or copper-green. Strongly blooded individuals, whose coloration (and sometimes appearance) again calls to mind their Chromatic or Metallic ancestors, do occasionally appear and are considered marked by destiny.

Dragonborn in 4e
* Height: 74" - 80". Weight: 220 - 320 lbs.
* Size Class: Normal. Speed: 6 squares.
* Ability Bonuses: +2 Strength or +2 Constitution, +2 Charisma
* Skill Bonuses: +2 History, +2 Intimidate
* Racial Abilities:
** Dragonborn Fury: +1 bonus to attack when Bloodied (half hitpoints or lower)
** Draconic Heritage: +CON bonus to healing surges
** Dragon Breath: (Encounter Power, Minor Action) choose an element type and one physical attribute at character creation. Once per encounter, may exhale as a close blast-3 attack using ability mod +2 vs. Reflex for 1d6 +CON bonus damage to all in area.
* Recommended classes: Fighter, Paladin, Warlord

They have fine scales over all their body, with colors ranging between golden, scarlet, rust, ocher, bronze and brown. The scales aren't metallic, they feel like leather. They have blunt snouts, frills along the jawline, and a headcrest of long ropey scales (think the dreadlocks that the Predator alien had). There used to be a huge Dragonborn empire, but it's gone more than a dozen generations ago (and Dragonborn live only as long as humans do), and now they're just rootless clans. They still hold onto the pride of once being on top, and they insist they were always honorable in the good ol' days, so feel free to play them like fire-breathing Klingons, or musclebound Russian gypsies. Because of their stats, they make one of the best races in the PHB for Paladins and Warlords, in contrast to half-orcs, who spent most of the last two editions basically pigeonholed into being barbarians. (Though one good thing 4e did for the half-orc was open up a number of other classes, like the monk.)

Dragonborn in 3.5 Ed
They were published in "Races of the Dragon," (ISBN:978-0786939138, January 2006) an official splatbook written by Gwendolyn Kestrel, who also gave us "The Book of Erotic Fantasy (d20)". They were people of any race who got sucked into the cult of Bahamut and were born-again as lizardmen with a side-order of Mary-Sue.
* +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity. Dragonborn are hearty and healthy, but they are awkward in their newly adopted bodies.
* Humanoid (dragonblood): Dragonborn are of their former type (usually humanoid) with the dragonblood subtype and any other subtypes they had before undergoing the Rite of Rebirth. For all effects related to race, a dragonborn is considered a dragon and a member of her original race. This does mean that ANY creature with intelligence 3+ and a non-evil alignment can become a dragonborn; warforged and awakened golems can become dragon-bots, awakened trees can become fucking dragon trees, ooze elementals can become goo-dragons, whatever. And yes, a dragon can be born again into a shittier dragon. Why is it shittier? Their lifespan will become a lot shorter and their already bad dexterity will become even worse in exchange for another con bonus point, which given the fact that no great wyrm dragon has a con score under 20 means that this bonus isn't needed.
* Age: After a dragonborn undergoes the Rite of Rebirth, she emerges as an adult creature regardless of her previous age. If she lives for 200 years (see Table 1-1, page 10), she enters middle age. This is a good thing for human dragonborn, and a big disappointment for formerly immortal beings who became dragonborn.
* +2 dodge bonus to Armor Class against creatures of the dragon type. The dragonborn have an innate sense of how best to defend themselves against their potential enemies.
* Immunity to Frightful Presence: Dragonborn are immune to the frightful presence ability of dragons, just as if they were dragons.
* Draconic Aspect: Bahamut has blessed the dragonborn with aspects combining some of the best attributes of good dragons. Upon completing the Rite of Rebirth, a dragonborn chooses which of the following three aspects to manifest. Once the choice is made, it cannot be changed.
**Heart (Su): A dragonborn who chooses heart as her draconic aspect gains a breath weapon. Straight line, (level/3 + 1)d8 damage, save for half, each use you can choose the damage type from these elements: acid, cold, electricity, or fire.
**Mind (Ex): A dragonborn who selects the mind aspect sharpens her senses, gaining immunity to paralysis and magic sleep effects. She gains darkvision out to 30 feet and low-light vision, plus a +2 racial bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks.
**Wings (Ex):A dragonborn who selects the wings aspect hatches sporting fully formed wings. Dragonborn can use these wings to aid their jumps (granting a +10 racial bonus on Jump checks) and to glide. Those with 6 HD or more can use their wings to fly.
* Automatic fluency in Draconic, because sitting in an egg for a year is apparently the draconic equivalent of Rosetta stone.
* Favored Class: Fighter. No XP penalties for multiclassing into Fighter. You know, the shittiest base class in the game that can be outplayed by some NPC classes.
* Note that while Bahamut only accepts beings of lawful good or neutral good alignment as clerics, he accepts any non-evil being as dragonborn. Yes, Bahamut is the god of good dragons, won't actually accept the prayers of Always Chaotic Good brass and copper dragons, but will still let them be reborn into shittier dragons, he's racist like that.

Dragonborn in 3rd Ed
They were called 'half-dragon templates', and had no fluff other than "Dude, a dragon fucked your mom? Duuuuudde!"
* Hit Dice: bump it up one die type, no larger than d12
* AC: +4 racial bonus to base armor class
* Attacks: Bite attack for d6, claw attack for d4
* Special Attacks: breath weapon 1/day, damage ranges from 3d6 to 6d10, depending on who fucked your mom
* Special Senses: gains low-light and darkvision to 60'
* Special Defenses: immune to sleep and paralysis effects, and immunity to 1 elemental type depending on who fucked your mom.
* Ability scores: +8 Str, +2 Con, +2 Int, +2 Cha
* Challenge Rating: +2 of base creature. Yep, just +2, because it rhymes with "Mary-Sue" ('cause I still know what that means), although the DMG says being a half-dragon counts for +4 extra levels if you're playing it as a PC, which is a very painful penalty since virtually nothing (not even all those bonuses) are worth being 4 levels behind the rest of your party.

There is nothing preventing you from stacking either the half-fiend or half-celestial templates on top of this, in addition to the axiomatic, anarchic (from the MotP), celestial, and fiendish templates, as well as the half-illithid and half-fey templates (FF), and the Half-Ogre and Half-Minotaur templates on top of all this. If you do have such a ridiculous number of templates stacked on top of each other, only one of those templates is going to signify your parentage, the others are just signs that a Wizard got really bored and decided to kidnap you in order to screw with your DNA to see what would happen when you were a kid.

Dragonborn in 2nd Ed
Again, this is just 'Half-Dragon' and "your mom is a dragonfucker" for fluff. Only male bronze, silver, and gold dragons can produce hybrids with female elves, dwarves (wtf), and gnomes (WTF?!). The products combine a human-style inability to multiclass with a demihuman-style inability to get too high level, and the only thing they get in exchange are a few useless racial abilities, plus a very weak breath weapon at level 7. To add insult to injury, they are introduced in Council of Wyrms, wherein you can, right off the bat, play a powerful as fuck dragon PC. They come off as both ugly and weaker than humans, demihumans, or dragons.

The Q'Orl are a insectoid hive race that is noticeable for having a substantially big empire. With the emphasis on BIG. Out of all the xenos out there, the Q'Orl has the largest self-sustaining government short of the Imperium. While others such as Orks are extremely disorganized with tons of infighting while the majority of the Necron Dynasties are still having their 60 millennia snooze fest. The Q'Orl are the only ones with the ambition of becoming the next galactic superpower. While you may ask, "But what about the Tau?", in all honesty, with the Weeaboos being sandwiched by the Imperium and Tyranids as well as fighting their own splinter faction while struggling to take hold on their measly 100+planets; the Tau have no hope in actually becoming a major polity. The Q'Orl on the other hand, not only do they have a large territory (Big enough to be seen in the galactic map) in the Segmentum Pacificus no less (Which is like a few door steps to Holy Terra for Empra sakes!) but they also have a ridiculously large and highly advance technology, heavy fire power, extremely fast reproduction rates surpassing humanity by a long shot and even future plans for a galactic conquest. As you can imagine, the Imperium is shitting themselves over an actual rising super power that is right next door to the heart of the Imperium. They would have started a new Crusade on the Q'Orl but with Abbadon stroking his 13th temper tantrum, the financial and resource cost/waste on the Damocles Crusade (Which was against the Tau, a polity several hundred times smaller and weaker than the Q'Orl), the re-awakening of the Necron Dynasties, the rise of Ghazghkull's rising Ork empire and the Tyranids joining in the merry clusterfuck. The Imperium just have to clench their butt cheeks and pray that the Q'Orl does not get their hand on Warp technology, since that is the Q'Orl's only weakness which is the lack of Warp technology. Unfortunately with the recent kidnappings of Imperium Navigators and reports of Q'Orl ships having salvaged/reverse-engineered Imperium Plasma Fusion engines, humanity can kiss their butts goodbye.

Their high technology, large empire and lack of weeaboo faggotry has made the Q'Orl one of the best candidate for a future 40k army other than the Rak'gol and thus awesome. But alas, Games Workshop has yet to implement them despite having a bigger galactic role than the Tau. Another case of Fail for GeeDubs.

History
What is known about the Q'Orl based on the few Imperial records is that they evolved from primitive invertebrates of lifeforms native to their homeworld of Loqqit (Whom the Q'Orl view the same way humans view Holy Terra in both religious significance and defense). Whilst all are born equal, there were several distinct strains that are developed within the larval nurseries. This was done so through the use of hormonal soups exuded by the queen which is responsible for siring the entirely male race by laying several thousand eggs every day. At an unknown point, they developed space travel capabilities where they created elegant Chainships.

As they expanded into space, they began placing planetary marker-stones, deep-space monoliths and archaeological sites containing a rich amount of Q'Orl text. These texts all proclaim the announcement of the "Superiority of the Swarmhood" (Which the Q'Orl seem to took a few pages out of the Imperial Truth), their ownership of select regions of space and their ultimate aim conquering the Galactic hub. Their empire was known as the Q'Orl Swarmhood and they were centered around their single holy world.

According to one text, four thousand years ago at the end of the 37th Millenium they became afflicted with some form of disease that may be Chaotic in origin. It is speculated that the disease was transmitted originally from Human settlers and may be attributed to Nurgle. During this time, they were assisted against this disease or Chaos by another race which some believe may be the Eldar. After the war was won, the pointy ears allied demanded payment which was a Q'Orl queen to make an "uncorroded swarm"; possibly a race resistant to disease or Chaos. This saw the Q'Orl dissolve their alliance and defend their queen though the Eldar conduct a treachorous act that steals away the queen. Despite the loss of the queen, a newly formed queen-egg was laid bringing the reign of the next matriarch. The Q'Orl has remained forever butthurt with their loss of their queen ever since then.

At some point, an Administratum colony-ark along with a fleet of ships as part of a seeding project was dispatched into the space held by the Q'Orl Swarmhood. Upon learning of this, the Q'Orl became less than pleased at seeing parts of their territory being held by Human trespassers. In retribution, they massacred an estimated number of thirty thousand pilgrims before a single colony-ark managed to escape and becoming the only survivor of its fleet. During the fifth year of Explorator Mari Alitz travel of Segmentum Pacificus on St Thor's Eve, the colony-ark was encountered in the desolate region of space where they stayed for twenty days though never encountered a Q'Orl specimen. The massacre of Imperium pilgrims and the aforementioned Navigator kidnappings had shooked the Imperium as it basically means that the Q'Orl aren't to be fucked with and will get their hand on Warp technology no matter the cost as well as show casing the incredibly strong ambition of the Q'Orl.

Anatomy
Q'Orl are first and foremost insectoid. The Q'Orl's primary sensory node contained six ocular orbs each of which were horizontally paired that contained photoreceptor rods of specific primary wavelengths. There were also a trio of scent-organs with greasy cilia-layers within that connected directly to the neutral cerebral column. The primary form of communication was through form of chemical and olfactory form making direct Human interaction impossible. However, they do possess a runic language which was simple and based entirely upon a mathematical principle which relates each element of a Q'Orl's life based on a prime number.

Their thorax contained a chitinous endostructure with ultra dense muscular mass that possessed eight limb structures four of which served as triple jointed perambulatory legs. The other four limbs contained manipulator extremities. The abdominal sac allows for thoracic joint which in turn provides 180 degree movement. Infused technology at the abdomen suggests a bio-mechanical port; possibly for weapons, vehicular interface or device operation.

The species possess multiple dexterous limbs with the presence of complex bionic technology suggesting a highly intelligent as well as advanced species. It was also believed that they were a short-lived but highly industrious species. They live in vast honeycomb structures that orbit their secret homeworld which lie the bodies of the dead are lovingly deposited. Like modern Earth insect colonies like ants, bees and termite each Q'Orl male adult drone can live for ten years roughly making their lives brief but fast which is reflected in their ideology. The species were divided into numerous breeds which included warrior drones and a queen. Newer strains were customizable through the use of a hormonal soup that was fed to the developing larva. The queen herself produces hundreds of egg everyday. A newer breed was later discovered by the Imperial Navy which were small maggot-like creatures called the Q'Orl Mind Grub, can infest Humans or Navigators allowing them to control other races with vocal commands or pheromones. This was one possible method of bypassing their inability to navigate through the Warp.

They have a sense of ancestor-worship where progress was made by continuing the half-finished projects of their forebears. The exception to this rule was the queen who lived for hundreds or possibly thousands of years. The Q'Orl believe in a form of racial glory where expansion and glory were the only justifiable outcome for the deaths of billions of their kind. This makes them a dangerous threat to the Imperium of Mankind in the future.

Technology
As previously mentioned, the Swarmhood is known to had created space vessels that are both highly advanced and heavily armed. Other than lacking Warp drives (Although they are working on it), Q'Orl technology often rely on heavy firepower. One of their most notable piece of technology are their Chainships. These Chainships are typically constructed with a series of interconnected-segments that allow them to separate at command into component parts. Typical tactics used by the Q'Orl is to uncouple their Chainships into separate segments in order to avoid capture which flee in different directions. These elegantly designed Chainships, however as aforementioned multiple times, lack the means to travel through the Warp which has restricted the expansion of the Swarmhood. This deficiency has allowed their enemies to escape their vessels by departing through the Warp. However recent encounters had seen them modify their ships with encumbering machinery that are of Imperial origin. This has led to the growing fear that the Q'Orl had begun to use captured or even salvaged Imperial warp-engines that were being incorporated into their space craft.

Eldar,Q'Orl and Tau relationship
As previously explained, the Eldar had a thing or two with the Q'Orl. We know that they worked with the Q'Orl initially before stealing their queen for an unknown purpose. However there are some theories explaining why the Eldar would do a thing like this that would piss off a future galactic super power. The most popular of which is that the Eldar experimented on the Q'Orl queen to create the floating space pope we all know as the Tau Ethereals.

This theory is somewhat supported in that the Q'Orl has a special organ meant to control each other through pheromones and scent. What do the Tau Ethereal has that no other Tau has? That's right it is a special organ that was speculated to mind-control the lesser Tau castes through subliminal pheromones hence why when the Farsight lost his ethereal he suddenly got a strong sense on independence and suspicion of his former leaders. And you know what time the Eldar kidnapped the Q'Orl queen? The 37th millennium or roughly the same time the Imperium discovered the Tau when they were still screwing each other in caves before the Warp Storm arrived on T'au. The Q'Orl was also reported to be quite numb to the Warp which is the same characteristics of the Tau. While the theory is largely unproven, this has led some to conclude that the Eldar kidnapped the Q'Orl queen in order to use her organs to experiment on the Tau as a weapon against Chaos.
"Fool me once, I'm mad. Fool me twice, How could you. Fool me three times, you're officially that guy, alright?"

That Guy is the /tg/ version of Scumbag Steve, but somehow he's worse. Jesus. Christ.

Not EVER to be confused with This Guy because This Guy is great.

That Guy never brings his own food, and always steals everyone else's.

That Guy always always does loud and bad imitations when he plays. K-Booom! Dakka-dakka-dakka! WAAAAAGH!

That Guy always smells bad and wears clothes that expose his overweight asscrack.

That Guy never shares his Cheetos, and he always gets orange dust all over everything. He doesn't clean his hands off before touching YOUR minis and books, either.

That Guy will always bring so much cheese to the table that the other players instantly become lactose
intolerant and choke (fun fact, cheese doesn't have much lactose so this probably wouldn't happen(ALSO choking IS NOT a symptom of lactose intolerance)).

That Guy never bothers to learn the rules, but will happily crash play to a halt every single turn.

That Guy will exploit every loophole in the rules to his advantage or require an utterly anal level of rule following whenever it suits him.

That Guy will try to fight against the party and consider himself clever (because he's "winning"), but will ragequit when the party kills him.

That Guy always has to play his own homebrew race and class, both of which are horribly overpowered.

That Guy inserts his creepy fetishes into everything, and is the reason men are banned from playing women in your group.

That Guy has tendency to get really mad over nothing.

That Guy fires into melee combat without the proper feats and abilities.

That Guy swears loudly in a public (Cons, FLGS, someone else's house.)

That Guy either doesn't paint his models or paints them too much.

Hey... FUCK THAT GUY!!!

THAT FUCKING GUY.

And the worst part about That Guy? We all see a little of ourselves in him... and shiver in disgust. The one good thing that That Guy does is move us to be a little better than we are... lest we end up like him.

That Group
Sometimes, a bunch of That Guys come together to form That Group a group that only That Guys will tolerate being a part of. The worst part of That Group is that the That Guys that are part of That Group will use its existence to justify their actions to other groups.

The Lament of Humanity
The Ultimate example of 'That Guy'hood has been achieved. The summit will never be reached by any other. The story of the Marty-Stu, Ao-Sue, Chief-Circle or "That guy as a DM in several setting using a system he designed himself.

A taste of That Guy's railroad: The main 'bad guy' of the campaign(s) was a literal author avatar (because the DM is an Authyr...I'm not kidding) who was a vampire, (powerful enough to be immune to sunlight and the need for blood, but with insane regeneration)a shape-shifter, (which made him immune to piercing/slashing/bludeoning damage)a psionic <s>(who is "orders of magnitude more powerful than the Emperor of Man")</s> HERESY!!!
and who seized complete control of the Star Wars Empire pre-"A New Hope" by 5 minutes of serious conversation (and possible mind-controlling) of Emperor Palpatine where Palpatine decided to retire because the Marty-Stu really did deserve it more. His first act upon taking control of the Imperial Navy was to send everything out into the multiverse and begin construction on "Several hundred thousand" Eclipse-Class Star Destroyers, with the construction eased by taking out the point-defense systems, fighterbays, shields, armor, and most of the life-support. (So they would only need a human crew of 1/10 a standard Eclipse)

A taste of That Guy: Using a d20 system, Marty measured his own real life INT score at 18, and made it so that none of the characters being used by the players in his games had an INT higher than that...so if the players came up with an idea for something complicated/scientific that he didn't know about off the top of his head, he could say "Your character isn't smart enough to know that or think of that"

This man, with an "18 INT" thinks that carbon dioxide doesn't dissolve in water,(while holding a Mountain Dew) <s>//(well... technically carbon dioxide does not dissolve in water as they are covalently bonded, the fizz you get from soda drinks are just molecules of CO2, not dissolved Carbon or Oxygen)//</s> (It actually undergoes a reversible reaction forming carbonic acid) that sniper rifles are the same as heavy pistols, (Just bigger but otherwise same force/impact/etc) and the coup de grace:

"Genes are like muscles dude, the more you use them the more you get! Then those get passed down to your offspring, like how giraffes have long necks!" //epigenetics mufugga //more like lamarckism

Ladies and Gentlemen...read the tale of that guy...and despair/laugh.
