Extra Heresy, also known as Double Heresy, is a form of Heresy so Heretical that it causes everyone in the room to drop everything and stare in awe of how Heretical it is. The term was coined by Commissar Fuklaw.

Some ways to define Extra Heresy:
# An extremely intense variety of normal heresy
# Something that's heretical even for Chaos (i.e. a pacifist Bloodletter)
# Something that tampers with the lore of an established franchise
# Something that just makes you RAGE with the intensity of a thousand supernovas (not always interchangeable with the term cancer, which implies disgust rather than outrage)
# Something that the mere mention of which violates you to your core

Extra Heresy is punishable by Exterminatus of the heretic and their kind.

...Followed by revivification, followed by further Exterminatus.

Banks, summing up the end result of Star Trek type societies like The Interex encountering the Imperium quite nicely}}

The Interex (both the demonym and the empire, used like "the Imperium") were basically what the Tau think they are. The word "Interex" derives from the real life word "Interrex": the title of the leader in the ancient Roman Kingdom that takes control during an Interregnum, with the title literally meaning "Between Kings". Considering their eventual fate it's just as unsubtle a name as Ferrus fucking Manus.

The Interex, probably the closest thing we can glimpse about Human Civilization during the period of enlightenment known as the Dark Age of Technology (or at least a positive example of a newly isolated colony adapting in the aftermath of the DAOT's collapse), was made up of humans working and living alongside the alien race called the Kinebrach, which were like space gorillas. It is notable to mention that the Interex learned about Chaos from, and were tutored by, the Eldar, likely coming into contact with Craftworlds making their early getaway, and who had seen first hand what could happen or even just some random Craftworld making its slow galactic cruise, as they would still be functioning in their intended role as trading vehicles at the time, it could have even been the Exodites. During first contact with the Kinebrach the human colonialists fought with their future partners, with the Kinebrachs technology proving to be even more advanced then that used by the human forces at the time. The conflict wouldn't last long before the two sides came to a mutually beneficial arrangement; proving the Imperiums blind dogma that all Xenos are just wicked monsters worthy of nothing but death wrong. The Forces of the Great Crusade would stumble upon warning beacons stationed around a feral world, warning visitors to leave the planet along as it was essentially a prison for a very deadly arachnid like species; much like a wild life preserve. The Legions always eager to claim another world didn't even bother to work out what the warnings meant and charged head first into the jungles, which ended up costing them dearly. After a while other ships arrived in orbit and wanted to know what the hell they were playing at, and didn't they read the warnings that they had left. The Intersex ships that arrived were bigger and more advanced than those of the Imperium and after some exasperated eye rolls they invited the bloodied Imperial forces back to their place to get patched up. Unlike the Imperium the Interex had no interest in any form of expansionism, and were quite content with their single system home. They were aware of and fought against Chaos (which they called Kaos), being tutored by the Eldar during their travels, unlike the Imperium at the time which officially denied the existence of daemons and spirits; the interex had been suspicious of the imperial forces, seeing their aggressive and war like behaviour as potential Chaos corruption, however when they discovered that the legions were completely ignorant, they were horrified that they had been traveling the stars without any sort of protection or knowledge. The Interex language was augmented/accompanied by some kind of music based on universal math called the Aria, which made them cool and not prissy. Their warriors, which mostly comprised the physically more powerful Kinebrach, could ride on four-legged robots to form a centaur-like warrior that fought with laser arrows that could easily penetrate power armour (the marines only realised that they weren't human once the armoured face plates were removed). Regular Interex warriors could just about take an Astartes in single combat, mostly because the Astartes underestimated them and because the Interex's fighting styles were almost unrecognizable to them. They felt that war was not the solution to all life's problems, and this idealism would lead to their demise, as after finally taking the Interex seriously, the Astartes quickly kicked their asses. For all the tech it lacks, the Imperium still possessed outstanding material science - as a result, bolters and chainswords were and are really dangerous, even to the Interex.

In the first Horus Heresy book, Horus meets them and is curious about the idea of cooperation with other species and decides to actually negotiate with them even though he knows the Interex makes use of robots and AI, which are abolished by the Emperor (thanks to that whole Men of Iron thing that fucked over everyone before), because he feels that the galaxy is too grimdark and the Imperium purges things too often, much to his legion and other imperial forces present fury, who angrily protested that such a thing went against the Emperors words to not suffer the Xenos to live. Horus told them to shut the hell up and that now that he was warmaster they will look into the option of not instantly killing every Xenos that crosses their path. When it seems that everything is going well, and the Imperium might just not suck if Horus thinks like this, Erebus steals a Kinebrach sword called an Anathame, THE MURDER SWORD (that would be later wielded by a champion of Nurgle much later on to fatally wound Horus; Fuck Erebus) from a war museum called the Hall of Devices, blows the museum up, and starts a war. Horus is scratched and sulks off to feel bad while the Interex are mentioned to have been purged in an offhand mention in the next book. Perhaps the Interex thought the Imperium was Chaos corrupted or they thought/realized the Imperium was being manipulated by Chaos. After a certain point of fighting without daemons and Warp shenanigans it's doubtful the Interex didn't realize their mistake and have an Oh Shit moment when they realized the Imperium wasn't in the mood to accept surrender after blood was already flowing.

The Interex makes an excellent contrast against the Imperium in several ways. Firstly, there's the comparison between them (or what little we know of them) and the Imperium both pre-Heresy (already showing the rot beneath its gilt facade) and post-Heresy (techno-barbaric theocratic fascist feudalistic hellhole). The Interex made the truth about the denizens of the Warp plain and simple to all its people, ensuring every member of their culture knew exactly what the Chaos Gods were after and the dangers they posed. The result of this education? Chaos basically couldn't get its hooks into any Interex: they were so powerless against them they had to manipulate the Space Marine Legions into doing their dirty work for them, though, it's more likely that they were left alive solely for the plan to corrupt Horus, especially since Chaos has proven multiple times that it can appear wherever the Hell (pun!) it pleases and unleash its legions of daemons. The Interex would have been purged as a threat (can't let the Anathema get his hands on their Warp-tech, after all) if not for their usefulness in tainting the Warmaster.

A legit point to argue is that their lack of militarization would have led to catastrophe if the Tyranids or Necrons were to show up on their doorstep, or even one of the Ork Empires of the time (as one of them required the efforts of multiple legions to topple, whereas the Interex were wiped out by a <s>single legion</s> single expeditionary fleet of a single legion). The Interex clearly had the ability to defend themselves against smaller groups of hostile xenos (as shown by their defeat of the Megarachnids) but just weren't geared to fight a galaxy-conquering force. It is still intriguing to imagine what might have happened if Erebus' plan was foiled, or what other Legions might have made of the Interex if they'd come across them before Luna Wolves did - like, say, the <s>idealistic</s> pragmatic Ultramarines, or the technophilic Iron Hands. Or even better, the Thousand Sons. That would have been hilarious (from a safe distance, anyway).

But were the Interex truly immune to Chaos?
Let us consider for a moment a few points: first off the Interex had received help from other alien races with some experience on dealing with Chaos; indeed, this is an advantage which may not have been wielded by many human civilizations in the setting.

Secondly there is the simple fact that the Interex was a post-scarcity economy; this alone means that next to no one would like to attempt to deal with enemy forces out of physical desperation, which is often one of the major reasons why Chaos takes hold in the poverty-stricken worlds of the Imperium. Like in real life, the vast majority of people will not feel any interest in joining the enemy or a strange cult when things go well.

Thirdly, the Interex was a collection of small territories when compared with the Imperium, so it was far easier for them to manage their population and bring education to the masses while keeping a better control over them, and if this sounds familiar to you, great, you are paying attention.

Finally, Chaos really didn't need to corrupt anyone to take hold over the Interex - all it needed was to use someone to wipe them out on their behalf. It also might have been possible for Chaos to corrupt some of them eventually. As Radical Inquisitors have shown, being fully educated on what Chaos is and its dangers doesn't prevent you from falling to it, and in some cases it actually helps the fall. In the Interex's case, their awareness of Chaos led them into a state of complacency that allowed the Ruinous Powers to destroy them with the help of outside agents.

Ultimately it can be recognized that the Interex looked like a possible path for a better future for mankind, but all it takes to fuck it up is one guy willing to take advantage of a bad decision like choosing to keep and study a Daemon Weapon (or any Chaos artifact really) instead of destroying it. So, they could be seen as a case in point that the Emperor's way is the right way since it isn't vulnerable to one asstard fucking everything up. Oh, sure, one asstard can try to and do a lot of damage, but ten thousand years and a Great Rift later, the Imperium is still kicking ass whereas the Interex are extinct.

Kinebrach
The kinebrach were a race of space gorillas that the human colonialists of the DAOT fought and then assimilated. They were technology advanced (more so then the humans at the time) and were civilized and cooperative enough to not be nuked back to the stone age like the megarachnids. Fortunately, the two sides were sane enough to realize that aliens can actually work together to achieve great things.

The Human colonialists and Kinebrach effectively merged their civilizations, becoming what is now known as the Interex. The humans were clearly in a leadership position when they encountered the Legions and were prepared to help out the Imperial forces even though they had their growing suspicions.

The Kinebrach had clearly dealt with the Warp in the past, and were clearly skilled in its use in creating weapons. The Anathame is also called the Kinebrach sword because it was made by the Kinebrach at some point in their history, as the sword stolen from the museum had a magical disease on it, that when keyed to a target would course 100% certain death to that individual; its shards are also capable of cutting a rift in both time and space. The wound caused by this weapon to Horus would lead to his sons seeking out the Chaos cult that would end up corrupting him entirely.

heresy

Ever wonder how Chaos Space Marines get ammo for their Bolters? How they repair their armor when it gets inevitably damaged? Who maintains the Traitor Titan Legions? Look no further, because it's all done by the Dark Mechanicum. Also known as the Dark Mechanicus, usually in older lore that predates the Horus Heresy books.

As Horus plotted his rebellion, he knew that having the Adeptus Mechanicus would be a major advantage against his father. In an effort to buy them into following him, Horus promised them the Standard Template Constructs in possession of the Auretian Technocracy, and access to the Vaults of Moravec. Infected with Chaos-tainted scrapcode upon opening the Vaults, Fabricator-General Kelbor-Hal declared his allegiance to Horus, and subsequently slaughtered everyone on Mars who didn't. When the Traitor Legions arrived in the Sol System, Mars was used as their staging point for Terra. Following the end of the Heresy, the Dark Mechanicum continued to function, supplying weapons and technology to the Traitor Legions. In return, powerful Chaos Lords such as Abaddon keep them in line with the shiny hoards of Archaeotech they found during the Great Crusade.

In opposition to the Adeptus Mechanicus, the Dark Mechanicum favors exploring technology to its limits and trying to create new technology. Unfortunately(?) most of their 'inventions' merely boil down to just putting a Daemon in some tech and watching the resulting carnage. This often means finding better ways to create Daemon Engines, and making even weirder Warp-based tech and weapons. They even managed to make Servitors out of that which must not be named called Death-Masques, back when they had been derided as largely useless.

Many members of the Dark Mechanicum consider the Omnissiah to be a combined aspect of Chaos Undivided, holding it as a means of progress and innovation. However, it also contains all the drawbacks one would expect of Chaos. Instead of Machine Spirits, the Dark Mechanicum uses bound Daemons to provide the intelligence and power sources needed to run the machines. In addition, the Dark Mechanicum has techno-organic technology, so everything they make is not only very much alive, but it also wants to kill you. More than usual, we mean.

But then again, if you're a Chaos Space Marine, you're a fucking badass and it shouldn't bother you. Members of the Lost and the Damned, well... may face more difficulties.

Unlike the AdMech, the DarkMech hasn't been running around the galaxy all that much. While on paper they should have evil Skitarii, Titan Legions, and warships at their command, they haven't been out with the rest of the forces of Chaos to rape, pillage, and burn the Imperium. However, instead of sitting on the couch for the past 10,000 years, they have been operating the daemon-forge worlds within the Eye of Terror and beyond to keep anyone on the Imperium's bad side armed and happy.

A good look into the Dark Mechanicum in the fluff is to read Ben Counter's Dark Adeptus in his Grey Knights series. Seriously, check it out. It will give you a good idea what kind of demented madmen fill the ranks of the dark order. Also Graham McNeill's Dead Sky, Black Sun from his Ultramarines series has a few chapters that show what life might be like underneath the Dark Mechanicum. Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Night Lords has a Dark Mechanicum who evidently decided to do as the Romans do and try to look as intimidating as hell by coating his skeleton with steel and wearing a black robe over it, so he looks like a steel-boned Grim Reaper. He also invented a jamming device that runs off of torturing a Titan pilot and broadcasting the resulting binary screams at max power. The Adeptus Mechanicus Duology is also set on a DarkMech forge world, and gives you a nifty insight into how they function and live.

What about a Codex?
Well it wouldn't be far off: the loyal Adeptus Mechanicus has been getting Codexes since 7th Edition, and GW has been adding "new" factions to the game for a while, so it wouldn't be too surprising. It also would be pretty cool because of all the different stuff that would be added in - either absolute cheese or some pretty nifty Daemon engine rules, say finally getting Stalk Tanks. Or better yet Servitor daemon hybrids.

Forge World has heard our prayers as the 30k Dark Mechanicum will finally have rules (and hopefully, models) in the 10th Horus Heresy book after Crusade. Ave Omnissiah!

With the release of Blackstone Fortress, there are finally plastic Dark Mechanicum models, sort of, in the form of the Negavolt Cultists.

See These Sick Fucks As Well
* Iron Warriors, who dabble in pretty fucked up mad science from time to time.
* Savage Morticians, a Dark Mechanicum Magos Biologos division of complete sick fucks who tended...
* The Daemonculaba, a pretty fucked up system of hothousing Space Marines, devised by another completely sick fuck.
The Trollbloods are cool Scottish/Celtic/Viking troll people who (for once!) are the best people in their entire settings. While trolls are often cast as child eating monsters in other games (see Warhammer Fantasy), here these poor creatures have been kicked and abused through their race's history by mankind (who, even so, are not the biggest dicks in the Warmachine setting).

Since even before the times of the Orgoth invasion of the continent the Trollbloods were feared by humankind and often enslaved to serve humans in various menial positions, most noticeably during the reign of the Menite Priestkings. As the rise of the new nations come into play still the Trollbloods were treat with scorn and used. The most recent example was the breaking of trust and oaths of friendship by the king of Cygnar, who worked events that a great host of Trollbloods would be right in the path of the Skorne as they attempted to invade the east borders of Cygnar. This seems to have been the straw that broke the camel's back however as many Trollbloods now seek to establish a land for themselves free of any interference and they will take the land of humans if needs be.

Because of their status as underdogs many see the Trollbloods as the heroic faction in the setting, which sounds about right as they are not trying to invade or enslave anyone, they are fighting for their very existence at the moment. They are also notable as being the only faction in Hordes (and Warmachine for that matter) who have not dicked anyone and who are not out to dick anyone.

Trollbloods come in a range of excellent troll-y flavours, from man sized trollbloods closest to humans, most intelligent and with some regeneration powers, to their larger and less intelligent troll cousins who have a wide variety of interesting abilities (pyre trolls for example as living furnaces capable of flinging burning globs at enemies). Next is the dire trolls who are the least intelligent but strongest and fiercest of all trolls.

All trolls are capable of regeneration to some degree. Trollbloods themselves can regenerate from most injuries given time and food. Trolls themsevles have a form of regeneration that is far faster, replacing even lost limbs in a matter of seconds.

They work well as a faction and played right using their natural regeneration powers they have some staying power.

Characters
Chief Madrak Ironhide: The unfortunate chieftain of the trollbloods, leading his people to establish a place for themselves. Is now more infamously known as the World Ender, named and thanks to his cursed axe, Rathrok, the World Ender, which he wielded to save his people. The axe drives him more violent by the day and has another unfortunate side effect of killing one of his men everytime Madrak takes a hit, even if it is non-lethal. Ouch. And despite his best efforts it refuses to leave, until recently but now the Circle has it. Which really sucks considering he is one of the more peaceful trollbloods unlike some dickhead to be mentioned below.

Hoarluk Doomshaper: This old xenophobic crazy dickhead is probably the reason, and maybe the only reason, why the Trollbloods still have a chance in this war, considering he brought the Dire trolls to their side. Unlike Madrak, he wants to establish a land for Trollbloods carved out in human blood and prefers to see the human race, and probably other races while he is at it, wiped out from Immoren, which given how humans are a lot more than Trollkin, good luck with that. That being said, he did managed to impress an ancient dire troll by surviving a punch the force of a charging locomotive from the dire troll, and even cutting of his own hand and regenerating it within minutes after taking said punch. Say what you will about him, but that is pretty metal for an old geezer. His tabletop epic version is the best warbeast-lock in the trollbloods faction. Take Mulg with his epic version, ALWAYS. Isn't a big of a dick towards Madrak, who he recognizes as one of the final hopes of the trollkin race. Some Circle Orboros assassins once tried assassinating Madrak in order to replace him with a more pro-Circle leader. Doomshaper stopped it. Violently.

Borka Kegslayer: A manly trollblood priest who does a better job running his warband like a drunken frat party. His lifelong goal is to sire as many bastards as he can, but unlike other fathers-of-the-year, he welcomes his bastards into his warband once they come of age and proven themselves. Probably the only trollblood leader, along with his men, who is actually having fun in this war. Reminds you of anyone? Also the only other trollblood besides Hoarluk who manages to get a dire ice troll to his side via head bashing and booze. Despite his drunken tendencies and happy-go-lucky attitude, he is smarter than he lets on and is often the mediator between Madrak's and Hoarluk's polar opposites. He also does not work directly for Madrak though he heeds his advice.

Captain Gunnbjorn: One of the two warnouns in the setting to be able to say, in all seriousness, "I have a rocket launcher, your argument is invalid." Gunnbjorn is a veteran of Cygnar's army, and he lives up to it, bringing his training as a trencher to the United Kriels and trying, with some success, to make an army of proper soldiers out of a pack of Scottish-analogue warrior types. His thinking is best summed up as "Why bother tossing cabers at the enemy when you could just shoot them in the face?" And when you consider that trollbloods are strong enough to carry around heavy machine guns and deck guns off of ships like a human uses a rifle, a lot of shot faces are left in Gunnbjorn's wake.

Grissel Bloodsong: When you are the acknowledged second-in-command of a guy people call 'World Ender' it might surprise people to learn you solve your problems by talking... That is, it might if you couldn't shatter someones bones by yelling loud enough. Grissel is a Fell Caller, somewhere at the midpoint of town crier, screaming berserker, and life-of-the-party inspirational speaker, thanks to the 'blood of Bragg', legendary Trollkin and the first Fell Caller (who really got around) she can magically inspire allies or shout so loud stone crumbles. She first started fighting for the kriels against the Skorne after the death of her husband and was impressed enough by Madrak to take the Kriels she was defending and join up with him. Grissel is the one left actually managing how you feed an army when you have no home, fighting rearguard actions when the Trollbloods retreat, and keeping the United Kriels together when Madrak decides to take a sabbatical to go and destroy his Apocalypse-ushering doom axe.

Grim Angus: A peerless hunter among a race that hunts to live and a former bounty hunter for the Iron Kingdoms until he caught himself giving his quarry a handicap to maintain his interest, Grim returned home to the Ordic swamps to find it overrun by the warring human kingdoms and relocating left them in the path of renewed and bloodthirsty Tharn. The stick up his ass might not be an Orgoth artifact but it still puts him in the running for 'trollkin least likely to have fun' if it wasn't for his assistants Muggs and Krump, two Pygmy Trolls that have taken mastery of Grims cold nature and peerless tracking, trapping, and hunting abilities as their personal mission.

Calandra Truthsayer: A Trollkin shaman (and a rare True Seer) the 'Oracle of the Glimmerwood' disputes what others say about the ill omens of Madrak and Doomshaper, working to interpret (and bending where possible) the strands of fate around the growing band of misfits that follow and protect her, and increasingly those of the United Kriels. Often relying on what seems like just good luck or chance often concerns her allies but the fact it's kept her alive so long speaks to just how clearly she can see the future.

Jarl Skuld: Skuld is an outcast, even among the often nomadic and homeless Trollkin, the 'Devil of the Thornwood' has been happy to plunder kriels just as much as human caravans when the situation called for it. Now the protector of the kin too stubborn to leave the Thornwood after years of aggression from the other forest denizens, war, and Cryxian infiltration (the last of which cost him an eye even a troll can't regenerate) Jarl Skuld is increasingly a folk hero among the kriels with a reputation for being lightning fast and evasive even outside the stolid Trollkin.

Ragnor Skysplitter: The Warlock included in the MK3 Battlebox. Not much is known about him yet, though he seems to be a nicer version of Doomshaper, and a true master of the Heavy Metal Claw pose. Ragnor is great when played with a beast-heavy list, as he can repeatedly cast a 1 Fury spell that gives models cover against ranged attacks and blast damage. His Pulverizer spell, combined with a Dire Troll Mauler's Rage Animus, gives said troll a ridiculous P+S 21 damage roll. His feat makes your opponent roll one less dice when rolling for damage, saving your army's ass when in trouble.

stub

Warbeast is terminology from the Warmahordes line of wargames by Privateer Press that refers to the big beasties who make up the centerpiece of the "Hordes" portion of the line. Basically, the Iron Kindoms have always been full of various horrible monsters, but also luckily blessed with a particular strain of mages able to mentally bond with and control such beasts - warlocks. In the modern era, the use of warlocks has largely been abandoned by the civilized races of humans, dwarves, elves and ogrun, who instead focus on warjacks and the warcasters who can control them (and who can be argued as a substrain of warlock, one able to bond with these steampunk golems). However, the "primitive" races of Immoren still make use of warlocks and their warbeasts in the constant battles for wealth, power and survival. And it says a lot about the kind of world Immoren is where these flesh-and-blood brutes can take on armor-clad smoke-belching gun-toting golem-tanks and win.

Different kinds of warbeast are associated with the different factions of Hordes, as you might expect.

Spawn of the Devourer Wurm
The Circle Orboros is the only human faction that still uses warbeasts (although the various woodwolds, which are golems made of stone, wood and rope fueled by Blood Magic, are technically a kind of warjack if you squint), which makes sense since they revere the god of nature at its nastiest.

Trolls
The Trollbloods have a simple approach to getting help to deal with enemy warjacks and warbeasts: they keep it in the family. Trolls in the Iron Kingdoms are kind of like those in Warhammer Fantasy; big, dumb, hungry, and coming in a lot of different subraces. If regular trolls aren't muscle enough, then the Trollbloods turn to Dire Trolls, which are even bigger, dumber and hungrier.

Battle Hogs
The Farrow are basically the P'Orc counterpart to Trollbloods, so they have a similar approach; Farrow warbeasts consist of various species of killer pig, as well as distinct mutant subspecies of their own race, such as the two-headed Biboars, the oversized Brutes, and the aptly-named Giants. Unlike the Trollbloods, however, the Farrow are happy to embrace technology too, so they've taken to outfitting their warbeasts (or at least the mutant farrow ones) with guns, armor, and even primitive cybernetics.

Swamp Horrors
Like the Farrow and Trollbloods, the Gatormen of the Blindwater Congregation make use of living and undead versions of giant, predatory, bipedal gators who may or may not be related to them (canon never clarifies). However, they also tame other swamp-dwelling abominations, such as undead Boneswarms, krakens, and Ironback Spitters, which are basically acid-spitting killer turtle-people.

Skorne Slaves
The Skorne make use of a wide variety of hideously tortured animals and giant humanoids to bolster their forces.

Dragonspawn
The Legion of Everblight is made up of the draconic abominations spawned from its master's blood.
