The Chimera is a monster from Greco-Roman mythology, described as a tripartite fire-breathing beast with the forequarters and head of a lion, the hindquarters and head of a goat, and a serpentine or draconic tail with a dragon's head. Exactly how that works out depends on the artist; perhaps the most iconic of real-world art depicts it as having a lion's head on its neck, a goat's head growing out of its back, and the dragon's head replacing the tip of its tail, but the most common modern depiction has the three heads sharing the same neckstump. What doesn't vary, strangely enough, is that even though the original Chimera was female, it always has a mane (beard) on the lion, even in period art depicting it as a unique creature. It ravaged the land with its fiery breath until Bellepheron killed it by using Pegasus to fly out of range of the fire whilst carrying a lance with a big block of lead on its tip; he threw this at its mouth and the flames melted the lead so it poured down Chimera's throat and killed it.

In Fantasy Gaming
Chimeras show up in a lot of fantasy games. Weirdly, they tend to have wings and be fliers (though admittedly they're usually very clumsy at it), despite the fact that the original Chimera was landlocked and this played a huge role in its defeat.

They are particularly prominent in Dungeons & Dragons (and thusly Pathfinder), where they are capable of speech, but usually not very bright. All the ego of a Red Dragon and none of the brains, essentially.

Chimeras also appear in Warhammer Fantasy and Age of Sigmar, where they are creatures of Chaos and so usually show up as mounts for the Chaos Lords.

The Chimera Armored Transport is the Imperial Guard's main troop carrier, capable of transporting troops on the battlefield and giving them fire support.

Unlike the Rhino Transport of the Space Marines, the Chimera is an Infantry Fighting Vehicle, an infantry transport designed to transport men to where they need to be, then provide support fire and cover behind its armor. Remarkably survivable from the front and equippable with a wide array of weaponry, it has at least as much Infantry-killing firepower as 2 guard heavy weapon teams, as well as the ability to act as a mobile firepoint for guardsmen with Special Weapons that can shoot out from the vehicle. Adding both survivability and flexibility to an army that otherwise tends to be sluggish, the Chimera is a ubiquitous presence that finds a home in many Imperial Guard Army Lists.

Overview
The Chimera is one of the most important vehicles in the Imperial Guard's arsenal: it is a fast moving, amphibious vehicle capable of traversing terrain that even a Leman Russ would find impossible to cross (swamps, marshes and even the occasional river). When the enemy neglects to defend these positions because of their perceived obstructiveness, they can expect a squadron or two of Chimeras in their flanks or rear.

In all seriousness, the Chimera is a fantastic asset. Have your CCS cower in it with pride, or shove them straight at that Carnifex over there

The Chimera has several uses: it can be an armored taxi of sorts where it rushes in between the front lines to insert and/or pick up units, and it can go to the rear to pick up new units and deliver them to the heart of the battle. If needed they can serve as moving barriers, providing troops cover while they engage the enemy. A third use is that they rush towards the enemy, shrugging off small arms fire as they deliver their payload into the most defended positions. The Steel Legions of Armageddon, one of the chief manufacturing planets for the Chimera, are fully mechanized and can move across the ash planes of their home world at frightening speeds.

The Chimera can mount a variety of weapons to support the squads they carry. The most common and famous weapon associated with the Chimera is the Multilaser, a larger, even more rapid firing version of the Hellgun, used to suppress enemy movement. This weapon can be replaced with either
Heavy Bolter or Heavy Flamer, both of which are twin-linked and can field either of those two in its hull. Forge World gives the Chimera even more blasty power with the ability to replace the main gun with an Autocannon, turning it into a different breed of threat altogether and according to the 40k wiki (not lexicanum, the other one), the Kronus schenanigana in Dark Crusade resulted in the discovery of how to mount a Predator turret with Predator autocannon on a Chimera. Each side of the tank features a row of three Lasgun turrets that embarked passengers may fire at enemy squads. The top of the passenger compartment can open, too, so the rest of the squad can join in the merry shooty fun. For added punch against vehicles, it can also mount a Hunter-Killer Missile.

However, probably due to the current Imperial Guard Codex, not so many Guard players use them, preferring the SIGAOD (Shooty Imperial Guard Army Of Doom), which is better supported by the Imperial Guard's other transport, the Taurox or Valkyrie. Mech Guard love the fucking things though, since for the points-cost they're one of the best investments a squad can make. 260 points will buy four squads a dedicated transport option that essentially removes the need to carry either Heavy Bolters or Autocannons.

The other major use the Chimera finds is as a command vehicle; officers embarked inside can still issue orders, measuring their order radius from the tank's hull; this serves the dual purpose of increasing your order distance (since the Chimera is obviously larger than the man shouting orders from the hatch) and also keeping your HQ alive, since Guard HQ's are notoriously squishy.

One common trick with Chimeras is to, after unloading their passengers, form them into hunting packs (Soviet Bronegruppa IN SPACE) and have them roam around the battlefield pissing off targets of opportunity. with two long-ranged, rapid-fire weapons and surprising durability, they absolutely excel at punishing relatively anti-tank-light forces like the Orks and Tyranids.

One other tactic is to set a long line of chimeras across the board, screened by Hellhounds and screening heavy support. This provides a multi-tiered AV12 line charging straight at the enemy. Combine this with Vendettas to destroy enemy Armour or Valkyries to flank. Alternatively, focus all of your chimeras into a wedge, driving them straight into the middle/weakest part of the enemy line. This will, provided the enemy hasn't gone all out in anti-vehicle, tank shock your opponent off the board, separating their army in two and allowing your Chimeras and heavy support to surround and mop up the rest of their army. Schwerpunkt their HQ to dust.

Back in the early days, the Chimera had a few variants like the Leman Russ Battle Tank (Details can be read below), despite this, these variants did not catch up for some reason. It would be nice if the Imperial Guard have a few more IFVs in their arsenal.

Variants
Chimerro
The <s>camaro</s> Chimerro is a variant of the standard Chimera and is by far, the most basic modification. Armed with an auto-loading hunter-killer missile and a multi-laser. It is used by the Astra Militarum and Skitarii.

As aforementioned, the Chimerro assault vehicles mount a standard hunter-killer missile tube with an autoloader on the side of the standard multi-laser turret. This addition gives the Chimerro a powerful long-range weapon, while the multi-laser still allows it to support its disembarked infantry by mowing down enemy troops.

The Chimerro maintains the full transport capacity of the Chimera and thus can be used to replace Chimeras on a one-for-one basis in Imperial forces. Chimerros can also be organized into Chimero Assault Squadrons, which are then attached to various infantry detachments.

The variant has been tested and approved by veteran regiments of the Astra Militarum and Skitarii, yet GW has not made a up-to-date model for it to be used in 8th Edition.

Chimerax
The Chimerax is a more heavily modified assault version of the Chimera utilized by the Astra Militarum and Skitarii, providing Imperial assaults with protection against enemy flyers and troops. It is armed with four autocannons making it the poor man's version of the Hydra Flak Tank.

Because the Chimerax are easily recognizable due to their upgraded turrets that mount four light autocannons, it makes the Chimerax somewhat vulnerable to be spotted and singled out by enemy forces. Nevertheless, these guns allow the Chimerax to lay down a curtain of fire; highly effective at keeping infantry, light skimmers and flyers at bay. However, unlike the Hydra, the Chimerax does not carry the complex tracking and ranging sensors that would make it truly effective at anti-aircraft.

The Chimerax maintains the full transport capacity of the Chimera and thus can be used to replace Chimeras on a one-for-one basis in Imperial forces. Chimerax can also be organized into Chimerax Assault Squadrons, which are then attached to various infantry detachments.

The variant has been tested and approved by veteran regiments of the Astra Militarum and Skitarii, yet GW has not made a up-to-date model for it to be used in 8th Edition.

Chimedon
The Thunderer Siege Tank of Chimeras. The Chimedon assault vehicle is the most heavily armed version of the Chimera, destroying enemy vehicles that stand in the way of Imperial advances. It is fielded by the Astra Militarum and Skitarii.

Chimedons have a strengthened turret, allowing it to mount a short-barrelled battle cannon, similar to the cannon carried by the Stormhammer. The shells fired by the Chimedon are armor-plated, and can damage enemy tanks and even Titans at medium range.

The Chimedon maintains the full transport capacity, maneuverability and sturdiness granted by its Chimera hull, giving it superb tactical flexibility. However, it always lacks defensive bolters, making the Chimedon vulnerable to infantry assaults. Despite this, the actual model seem to discount the fluff and mounts one anyway. Due to this, Chimedons are not often used to spearhead assaults.

The Chimedon can be used to replace Chimeras on a one-for-one basis in Imperial forces. Chimedons can also be organized into Chimedon Assault Squadrons, which are then attached to various infantry detachments.

The variant has been tested and approved by veteran regiments of the Astra Militarum and Skitarii, yet GW has not made a up-to-date model for it to be used in 8th Edition. However, if your FLGS is okay with homerules, consider suggesting a Chimera with a Taurox Battle Cannon as a counts as Chimedon.

A notable coincidence is that the former medium tank of the Imperial Guard was called the Carnodon, thus, as the Chimedon is effectively to the Chimera as the Razorback is to the Rhino, it could easily be named as a combination of 'Chimera' and 'Carnodon'.

Faction Specific Aspects
Genestealer Cults
With the latest release of the new revamped Genestealer Cult, it seems that certain generations of Genestealers was able to successfully infiltrate even the commanding office of the Imperial Guard (How the upper Imperial authorities and local Imperial paranoia failed to locate THAT kind of Heresy is unknown), and are thus, able to steal some Chimeras and hoard it in the gigantic sewers of an Imperial underhive. A Genestealer Chimera functions the same as a regular Chimera only with Genestealer insignia.

Inquisition
The Inquisition can take chimeras for ten points cheaper, but they lose the mobile command vehicle rule. Loses some of the Imperial Guard vehicle options, but can purchase psybolt ammunition instead to make its heavy bolter(s) and storm bolter more powerful. They look normal from the outside, but open up to something that no one expects.

Rules of Note
There are actually written rules that say this particular Metal Box is also a boat. Its Amphibious rule allows it to move across water terrain. This would mean that it could ram an Ork Submersible, or tank shock a Saharduin squad. Sadly, since nobody uses water terrain, plays apocalypse, or has more than one Saharduin model, Amphibious is a totally useless rule.

Another rule of note is the one that lets you use orders whilst riding in a chimera. This one's actually pretty useful.

Weaknesses
The Chimera's front armor is durable, but its side and rear armor are much more flimsy. While it's generally tougher than a Rhino, it also tends to be a bigger target since the Chimera's weapons are often too big for armies that rely on light armor (Dark Eldar, Orks, etc) to ignore, whereas a Rhino tends to be less of an obvious target. It also has only a single small access point (its rear door), which is such a glaring issue that it gets its own separate subsection.

The Rear Door Paradigm
The Chimera's only access point is its (comparatively tiny) rear door. Embarking rules state that every unit about to board a transport has to be within 2 inches of an access point, which means it's very hard (if not impossible) to fit more than 6 or so models into a Chimera during an embarking phase, when the Chimera has room for 12. This is a problem that the METAL BOX and GIANT METAL BOX just don't have, either because they have multiple doors, or because their access point is so big it makes the issue moot.

This doesn't preclude larger units from starting the game already loaded in the Chimera, nor does it stop smaller units from using the damned thing like they pretty much always have, but it does mean that taking an Armored Fist Squad of 10 soldiers can quickly turn into a wonderful impersonation of when a fa/tg/uy tries to unpack and then repack a suitcase. You're generally not getting a larger unit back into the Chimera it disembarked from, so it's probably better for the Chimera to drive off and make new friends while the unit camps the objective. On the other hand, if you're willing to make the sacrifice, you can split your team members of the armored fist (or other) between two or more Chimera. This has its own obvious benefits and costs. But hey, you can always just rely on a Guardsman’s life expectancy to fix the issue for you.
Star Wars
The Chimaera was introduced as Thrawn's flagship in Heir to the Empire and would quickly become one of the most prominent ships in the EU. This is despite it being a mere Imperial II

Star Wars doesn't have Greek mythology, but it was assumed to refer to genetic Chimeras or at least some mad science hybrid beast since Star Wars has genetics advanced enough to produce human clones.

Monstergirls
Monstergirls
Chimera monstergirls are a rare breed, mostly because designers struggle with how to incorporate the three heads and tripartite body into one design.

In the Monster Girl Encyclopedia, the "Chimaera" belongs to the small family of "Demon Beasts", and has the form of a lion-girl with goat's horns and legs, a serpent for a tail, a leonic paw for a right arm, a draconic paw for a left arm, and pauldrons reminiscent of a lion and a dragon's heads. Extremely powerful and destructive, it has a bad case of split personalities, with one persona for each of the four beasts that work as a team to support her in her goal of finding and keeping a lover.

The Stormcast Eternals (aka Sigmarines, Ground Marines, Fantasy Marines, Stormcunt Eternals, and Adeptus Sigmartes) are the primary type of soldiers used by Sigmar in order to fight Chaos during the Age of Sigmar, and thus are the posterboys of the new line.

As will be made evident many times over, they're literally just Space Marines transplanted into the Age of Sigmar, in purpose (An elite military force of engineered super-soldiers, personally designed by a god-ruler to be his warriors to combat unfathomably terrifying Lovecraftian horrors that normal men would simply despair at), model design (bulky dudes in all-enclosing, easy-to-paint armor with huge pauldrons for kids to freehand designs on to make themselves feel special) and being shoved down the throats of the entire hobby by GW's marketing department. Two more strikes for (or against, depending on your view) them are the fact that some of them have crossbows that resemble bolters and the winged ones resemble some of the Blood Angels models. Their fluff origins, on the other hand, do give them some important differences from the autistic warrior monks we all know and tolerate.

What are the Stormcast Eternals?
They are the Fantasy Space Marines, the Warriors of Order - Nobledark once-dead warriors filled with piss and lightning while wielding hammers, thunder, lightning strikes, and and full-body armor adorned with hammers decorated with thunder-lightning. Don't give me that look, ever counted how many fucking skulls are on your average Space Marine?

They are made from exceptional mortal heroes taken away at the time of their death or the height of their power by the God-King Sigmar and infused with his own Divine Essence and given fancy new weapons and armour made of Sigmarite. The universal trait to all the Eternals is that they opposed Chaos whenever it appeared, though certain chambers work on minor details like faith or vengeance.

Currently there is no evidence on whether or not there are non-human Stormcast Eternals, maybe the aelfs and duardin gods don't like Sigmar taking their people's souls, or perhaps Sigmar gives priority to humans, after all, he is in a way human too. It should also be noted that all Stormcast Eternals have the human keyword. For awhile the only named characters presented so far were originally male humans but then a female special character was introduced in Neave Blacktalon. Other than that, there is a story where Sigmar cries over the fact he couldn't save a warrior maiden from getting tortured and killed by the forces of Chaos as he still hadn't completed the teleporting device which allows him to take away potential candidates for Reforging. In Godbeasts it is stated that the entire Household of the Royal Victrians were spirited away and turned into Stormcast Eternals, quoting it: "Reforging every man and woman into Stormcast Eternals" and the Sacrosanct chambers are pretty equal opportunity.

Hey Games Workshop, we know you read this wiki too, thanks for the female Stormcast, now we want <S>non-human</S> (I mean, unless you wanna mess with keywords...) Stormcast Eternals too!

Considering that the process of making a Stormcast is more mystical than any genetic modifications and that the person in question will still remember who they were before the Reforging, it is still possible that any non-Chaos mortal could become one, and there is even a former Chaos Champion of Nurgle that Sigmar purified into becoming his own Champion. The only real specific that is considered is that the inhabitants of the Realm of Death tend to become Lord-Relictors, who are able to see the spirits and thus are able to anchor his kin to Sigmar's Realm of Azyr.

That said, however, the Eternal part of their name is rather relative: Their souls are constantly coveted by Nagash because he considers anything dead as his, and the supply of Sigmarite is technically limited as it's basically the core of the old Warhammer world. Of course this is still a lot, since Sigmar gets this mineral from the core of the World-That-Was and this was probably the same size as our own Earth, that means there is potentially up to 7 billion cubic kilometers of raw sigmarite and in all honestly Sigmar (and his benevolent benefactors Games Workshop) could probably find/make more if he had to. Still, each reforging takes supplies and more of the Stormcast's memories, feelings and general personality is lost due to Nagash taking pieces of their soul each time they die (Sigmar eventually figured out Nagash's skulduggery and decided to have a nice little chat with the Great Necromancer about the issue. Nagash, being Nagash, is less than willing to change his ways).

Aside from stomping Chaos, their main goal is uncovering the Realmgates: Portals to other Realms. By securing them, they gain another route back to Azyr or to any of the other realms, so a small retinue of Stormcasts has to stay behind to guard it, until the Freeguilds (old Empire models, now a unified army) can secure land and begin to rebuild.

Aside from all that, Stormcasts aren't actually all that holy or magical when it comes down to it; they are about as powerful physically as a Chaos Warrior, aside from the "cannot completely die" thing and due being infused with the magic of Azyr they have considerable immunity to any corrupting magical force, but can still be zapped by normal Chaos magic if strong enough. Unlike Chaos Warriors, who are fanatically devoted to Chaos and often outright insane, Stormcasts are still very much human, or whatever race they were before.

And while their main portrait is of honorable warriors they still need to eat, to sleep (although, like the space marines, they can endure far more than common mortals) and have desires like anyone else. They're also anatomically correct but, like Space Marines, the functionality of their peepees (or, unlike Space Marines, vagoos) wasn't expounded on. For awhile the only hint in lore was in the novel "Lords of Undeath" where Neferata had a private chat with a Lord-Celestant, who upon seeing her in a revealing dress privately reflected that while he was above temptations of the flesh he intellectually appreciated her efforts at seduction. Unlike Space Marines, it was later confirmed in the short story "The Lightning Golem" by Nick Kyme that Stormcast Eternals are capable of sexual intercourse and do so to varying degrees; a Lord Veritant Issakian is depicted waking up up after an eventful night with another Stormcast, a female by the name of Agrevaine. However, this does raise further questions (Are Stormcasts Eternals fertile? If so, can a Stormcast impregnate/get pregnant from a non-Stormcast? The list goes on).

Unlike some Chaos Warriors their armour and faceplate can be removed, although they seem comfortable wearing them to not to need to remove them for weeks on. Another trait of the Stormcasts is that not all of them were warriors during their mortal lives, instead all of them chose to make a stand against Chaos, from a general or a king to a smith, a philosopher, a baker, a housewife, a farmer or even a beggar, they faced the forces of the Dark Gods in doomed fights and were found worthy by Sigmar. They are also able to have normal lives because they are allowed to not be on permanent service, so they can gain political and hierarchy positions, as well as highly entrusted professions, and hang around with mortal friends and even their descendants.

Stormcasts see themselves as saviors first of all, trying to defend others successfully, when they had failed to do so in the past. That said, some have a tendency to get lost in revenge, seeing only the destruction of Chaos as a viable way of atoning for past transgressions. One Celestant (general) in a recent novel brooded over the fact that his entire tribe was wiped because he didn't have the strength to beat the Chaos Sorceress who did it, thinking only manly unfeeling Batman-esque brooding would make up for it. His fellow Celestant wasn't convinced, thinking that the fear of losing and the grief and loss he feels should be his drive. Another Stormcast makes a point to remember that most of the Chaos forces they fight only follow chaos because the Chaos Gods are all they have ever known and that attempts to redeem them should be made. So at least they have different ways of thinking, which is cool. Hopefully, they won't become so /d/ivergent that Chaos can better manipulate them.

Apparently, if a Stormcast loses a piece of equipment, it isn't regenerated with them (Sigmar's teleportation magic is not absolutely infallible), so many Stormcasts seek out their old nemeses to get their things back. An Orruk Warboss cheerily mentioned taking the head of a Stormcast clean off and showing it on his back banner out of respect, knowing the 'Cast would get back at him to fight again.

TL;DR Stormcast Eternals are magical Necron bro-tier Space Marines with emotions. Better yet, they have a few similarities to Rubric Marines (you know? the whole possessed armor automaton shenanigan?) only with less grimdark and more free will and actual flesh.

Rank and Military
When each mortal is reforged, they are immediately put into a strenuous training ritual meant to hone them into superhuman hammer-swinging engines of holy war. Once the big man is satisfied, he then groups them into Stormhosts, the equivalents of Space Marine Legions, and there they train with each other in a massive coliseum that Malerion gifted him back when there was an alliance. These stormhosts are then broken into Chambers (Chapters) with each having several conclaves organized by specialty. The Strike Chambers consist of your standard boring troops (divided further into Warrior, Harbinger and Exemplar Chambers based on exact makeup), the Extremis Chambers consist of riders of Dracoth and Stadrake cavalry, the Vanguard Chambers consist of outdoorsy ranger types and the Sacrosanct Chamber consists of priests and magicians. In addition, there are three known Chambers Sigmar has yet to unveil to the world; the Ruination, Covenant and Logister Chambers.

Each Storm Host is lead by a Lord-Commander, a supreme leader through which Sigmar's will is realised. Supporting this are the Chamber Command, who governs each individual lesser Hosts, of which there are between 3 to 9 Retinues (squads), each with between 6 to 20 Stormcasts. For example, the Hammers of Sigmar Chamber has 301 Stormcasts of 7 Commanders, 36 Paladins, 180 Liberators, 18 Prosecutors (yep; half as many jumpies as elites) and 60 Judicators.

*Strike Chamber Command:
**Lords Celestant: The top dogs in the Supporting Chambers, these are the mightiest of heroes among the Chambers, gifted a larger portion of Sigmar's power in order to become great leaders. Some opt to fun with hammers and swords, while other find Dracoths (Large wingless dragons that shoot lightning) to ride like horses or Stardrakes (Even larger dragons with wings that can also cause meteor showers).
**Lords Relictor: These guys are priests, and are able to see the spiritual realm and all the spooky souls that swirl around in it. Their job is to use their skeletal relics to anchor the Stormcasts to Azyr so their souls don't accidentally end up as Daemon chow or part of Nagash's kingdom of skellingtons. Off-duty they function much the same as a Chaplain, warding the relics a Chamber finds and guiding their members in matters of faith.
**Lords Castellant: The Paladin to the Warlord and Cleric above. Their initiation tests involving conquering their fears by traveling some mountains in Azyr and befriending a Gryphound. If successful, they get special warding lantern that illuminates his fellow Sigmarines and incinerates Chaos. As "Castellants", they each oversee a Stormcast Hold or Free City; they don't generally take to the battlefield unless necessary for the protection of their castle.
**Knights Heraldor: These guys have giant horns that shoot lightning. Because STORMS. Their helmets are weirdly segmented around the mouths; assumed so the warrior inside can actually blow the fucking horn.
**Knights Vexillor: Unlike the other jobs, these guys are actually chosen in a contest. A shitton of Stormcasts enter the Coliseum, smack each other to not-quite death (The Coliseum makes sure everyone leaves refreshed because... Malerion didn't have a mood swing when he made it. Or did he, recent lore states that he actully has treacherous intentions towards Sigmar and his Coliseum has a sinister purpose). The winner gets to hold an awesome standard, or a big plate with a glowing orb on it that can be used to throw around fuckin' comets.
**Knights Azyros: The closets thing to Scout Leaders, these guys have lanterns to help illuminate the realms so Sigmar can see all the way from his palace. Also, the lanterns burn chaos.
**Knights Venator: Shootier flying Sigmarines, these guys are master archers with magical arrows and own pet <s>Star-Eagles</s> Articunos. One of their Stormsurgeboltthunderblowsuperarrows can kill almost any regular leader character in one shot.

*Strike Chamber Troops:
**Liberators: The ground-floor. The goons. The average Liberator is a walking tank, capable of wielding either melee weapons or shields to protect his pals from anything deadlier. They use either swords or hammers, sometimes dual wielded, or Grandhammers and Grandblades (Bigger versions of the usual Hammers and Swords).
**Judicators: Warriors skilled with both sword and bow who put to use their uncanny shooting ability in the ranks of the Justicar conclave. They wield devastating long-range weaponry (Skybolt Bows or Boltstorm Crossbows). Some even get luckier and get a mega-bow that fires thunderbolts. THE BOWS ARE MAGIC! YEEEEEEEEEEAH!!!! They also hit Chaos-stuff better, because fuck those guys amirite
**Prosecutors: They're like Liberators, but they got wings. They tend to spearhead the assault with their speed, throwing either magical reforging hammers or magical reforging spears. Or they could just smash with hammer and sword weapons. Like the Liberators, they can wield big-ass weapons like two-handed axes or war hammers.
**Retributors: Massive piles of Sigmarite who serve in the Paladin Chambers. These guys carry massive hammers to squash things, which has Rending +1 which can completely remove everything not a leader or monster in a turn. These guys love to pummel anything with more than one Wound, since they do two Damage standard, and can turn that into Mortal Wounds. There's really not something these motherfuckers can't do. Well okay, they don't stand up to high Rend or MW shooting, but then again that's an SE problem in general.
**Protectors: Despite the name, these Paladins only wield glaives. Glaives that are actually capable of generating magical force fields, and cut down big-ass monsters, should they get close. They are also very, very long range, so put them behind a Liberator wall and skewer that Mawkrusha something fierce while the goons get slaughtered.
**Decimators: Paladins with fuck huge axes, these things are made to make sweet murder out of hordes. These guys have a massive range on their axes, which is important - because they each get as many attacks as they have enemies within range - because fuck Reaver Hordes amirite. They are also very scary, so people take more heavy Battleshock casualties. Don't try to axe the knee of a Monster or Hero, though; with only one attack, their axes are laughably weak.

*Extremis Chamber
**Drakesworn Templars: Usually a second-in-command for a Lord-Celestant, a Templar is one of those few fortunate Sigmarines to encounter a Stardrake. Their loadout is more versatile.
**Fulminators: Paladin Protectors on Dracoths.
**Concussors: Paladin Retributors on Dracoths.
**Desolators: Paladin Decimators on Dracoths, same as the rest.
**Tempestors: Paladins with crossbows riding Dracoths.

*Vanguard Chamber
**Lords Aquilor: Paladins on Gryph-Chargers (giant wingless hippogryph-things)
**Vanguard Hunters: Liberators with small crossbows.
**Vanguard Raptors: Elite Sharpshooters with Longstrike Bows or Hurricane Crossbows (Elite Versions of Judicators). They also have aether-wings to bite and harass the enemies
**Vanguard Palladors: Liberators on Gryph-Chargers.

*Sacrosanct Chamber
**Lords Arcanum: Wizard lords of the Sacrosanct chambers. Sometimes ride Gryph-Chargers, Dracolines (dragonoid big cat things), or Tauralons (Derp-faced pegasi).
**Lords Ordinator: Builders of Sigmar's works and babysitters of his artillery.
**Lords Exorcist: Wizard Stormpope.
**Knights-Incantor: Stormcast wizards without Lord rank.
**Evocators: Magical paladins with a few spells at their disposal. Some ride Dracolines.
**Castigators: Magical Judicators whose crossbows shoot flasks of Dracoth breath.
**Sequitors: Liberators with maces and a self buff to either their weapons or shields. Not having the Prime take a great weapon actually has a benefit, giving them a ranged soul vacuum that hurts nearby Chaos and Death units.
**Celestar Ballista: Lightning ballista with options for either rapid fire or one big blast.

Notable Stormhosts
*Hammers of Sigmar: The first Stormhost. They wear Blue and Gold and pride themselves on being the posterboys of AoS. With the release of second edition, the posterboys finally have a personality! With the people of the realms seeing them as the foremost stormiest, they now fear that any unsavory rumor or failing on their part will lead to the undoing of Sigmars plans. Those amongst them who die too many times are now plagued with visions and generate lightning around themselves. Vandus is awesome.
*Hallowed Knights: The fourth Stormhost. They wear silver and blue and are pretty zealous about killing Chaos. They're known for their DETERMINATION and incredible faith in Sigmar, making them the ideal choice for jobs like wading through Nurgle's horrifying and disgusting kingdoms despite all the filth and plagues that pollute the lands. This Stormhost is in general one of the more popular Hosts, with their metal armors and very faith-based culture. Also, have a cool battle cry ("ONLY THE FAITHFUL!"). They are having their own novel series done by Josh Reynors. Some of them have been infected by Nurgle's plagues, however their faith is so strong that it purifies their skin, causing their armor to be melted and permanently fused to them. They are occasionally aided by a winged, androgynous being called the Silver Saint who manifests from lakes and pools of water (aka Lileath trying her Lady of the Lake gimmick again).
*Celestial Vindicators: The Sixth Stormhost . They're vengeful motherfuckers who declared vengeance back as mortals and thus are united by their grudges. Their armour is turquoise, so the blood reaaaaally stands out. They also tend to kick it with the duardin, so that's pretty cool. Also, they have a sword fetish. They revere a spirit called the Father of Blades, heavily implied to be the manifestation of the Empire's Runefangs combined into one being, and each vindicator seeks to become a living weapon.
*Celestial Knights: A Stormhost that is on a constant crusade to bring the light of Sigmar to all benighted lands. Pretty much these guys.
*Lions of Sigmar: Rocking the bronze gold and purple look there is little-known about this Stormhost save for their heraldry and thunderous roar in battle. Most people auto-assume "Dark Angels" from hearing the word Lion, though the connection is iffy. The Dangles weren't the only chapter to keep to themselves to that degree.
*Knights of the Aurora: Sporting grey armour with green and gold trimmings, this Stormhost are claimed to strike more quickly and are masters of rapid assault, overall having the need for speed.
*Knights Excelsior: This Stormhost run around in white armour with blue and gold trimmings. These guys are said to have built up a fierce reputation for totally massacring their enemies so brutally that even other Stormhosts think its a bit excessive. Their claim to fame is that they stepped up to bail the Hallowed Knights out when a Lord of Plagues was about to capture Alarielle, with their Knight-Azyros, a pretty fly badass called Diomar, personally charging the powerful Nurgle lord. They have a massive hard-on for Order and see most attempts at individuality or freedom as dangerously Chaotic. Recently featured in the Malign Portents short story collection massacring unwell civilians in their attempt to instil uncompromising authority in the Realm of Life, despite the fact these civilians were loyal to Sigmar in the first place. One of their number, the White Reaper, is used by the Order of Azyr as the bogeyman to make rebellious nobles stay in line, to say it works extremely well gives you an idea of how scary these guys have become. When an order aligned human has a less than flattering opinion of the stormcast it's usually because they had a run in with these guys. Their extreme black and white morality and habit of slaughtering the innocent by the thousands seems to be turning popular opinion against Sigmar himself. Great job guys.
*Astral Templars: If you're tired of holy knights, go no further; these fuckers have taken to like it in the Realm of Ghur, and has become one with the beasts. Their color is purple, and their armor is adorned with pelts, bloody markings and other tribal stuff. To be allowed into the Templars, a warrior must be a hunter of beasts and monsters, which honestly isn't a big deal when they all come from Ghur, the Realm of Beasts! The Space Wolves to the Hammer's Ultramarines, but with less wolfs and more barbarians. They honour a godbeast called ursricht, a giant white bear though he is often depicted as a white haired man. So an expy of Ulric and Ursun than.
*Tempest Lords: Donning the Ultramarine blue with an addition of white shields and shoulders are the Tempest Lords. They're described as the most regal and proud Stormhost, probably because every single one of these guys was a monarch, lord, or other such noble before being chosen by Sigmar. Despite this, they're actually pretty baller and down to earth guys, being perhaps the most selfless of all the Stormhosts, flat-out seeing it as their duty to protect those less fortunate than themselves (which is basically everyone,) often inspiring downtrodden mortal tribes to break their chains and fight Chaos alongside the Tempest Lords. They're also pretty literal it seems, because Sigmar once joked that the Stormcast were each worth twelve mortal men in a fight and since then the Tempest Lords have kept count of how many kills they score before dying, taking it as a massive personal disgrace if they don't reach twelve kills. That said, they do a pretty damn good job of reaching that score, leaving them as one of the hardest Stormhosts to kill simply due to their sheer pride refusing to let them die. Each one of these stormcast is a native of Hysh and follow the teachings of Mirmidia who they revere as much as Sigmar.
*Anvils of the Heldenhammer The Anvils of the Heldenhammer are a Stormhost of the Stormcast Eternals, wearing black armor. The warriors of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer are dark and brooding, as they aren't made from recently-dead heroes but from long dead warriors who've been resting in tombs and barrows for ages. Most of them are from Shyish as well, so death is central to their mindset - They see themselves as bringers of death, and if turned around against them, death is just another step in the defence of Sigmar's domain. Now that Papa Bones Nagash is getting his spotlight, the Anvils have to deal with him specifically.

Notable Fan-created Stormhosts
Help us expand this list:

*Forgesworn Eternals: A Duardin Stormhost wearing silver and red.

*Wardens of the Ember: A Stormhost composed of mortals who died standing firm against the most insurmountable Chaos incursions. Former priests cut down mid-prayer, standard bearers who fought and died rather than abandon their colours, musicians who played songs of hope until their very last breath - stoutness of heart is often more important than strength of sword-arm in deciding whether a mortal is bound to this Stormhost. They wear grey armour with black and orange trim, and are notably more jovial than other Stormhosts; it is not uncommon to hear rousing speeches and booming laughter as these heroes urge their mortal comrades onwards.

Notable Stormcasts
*The Celestant-Prime: The alpha, the first Eternal ever forged by Sigmar. It's unknown just who he might be, but it's said he was a mighty king from the past (making people immediately guess either Settra, or Karl Franz). Despite how much power he put into it, the process was still incomplete, so Sigmar decided to put him in a chamber to preserve the project because he spent too much as it is. However, once he recovered Ghal Maraz, he was able to finish the process and get a giant golden angel to join the ranks armed with the warhammer, needless to say, he can easily wipe out any <strike>Chaos Lord</strike> Greater Daemon who has the misfortune of facing him.

*Vandus Hammerhand: The first named hero among the Eternals, a Lord-Celestant of the Hammers of Sigmar who rides a Dracoth. Apparently, he once fought off against a Khornate Lord known as Korghos Khul as a mortal and almost died before being forged, and instead became a giant gold-plated badass instead of just a human one. He's considered the hero of the Starter Set and is responsible for finding Ghal Maraz. Also, he was the first one to tame a Dracoth. Currently having visions where he sees his future self, who has been Reforged so many times that he has lost all physical form and become an emotionless being made out of pure lightning, warning him about what would happen if the Stormcasts cannot fix their flaw.

*Neave Blacktalon: The first female stormcast released for the setting. Neave Blacktalon is basically an eversor with tits, with the mentality of a vindicare. As a mortal she was raised from childhood by a particularly vicious Tribe of Sylvaneth. They basically raised her to be an assassin and all around mean bitch ala Xena warrior princess. Unfortunately, her first target was a chaos lord way out of her league and she would have died had Sigmar not decided she'd make a great stormcast.

*Gardus Steelsoul: The best (by fan-view, not author fiat) of the Lord Celestants. What makes Gardus great is that he was no great lord, but a common man. Born Garradan, he was a hospice worker (a doctor for young uns) in the port city of Demesnus. When the forces of chaos invaded the city, he worked tirelessly to heal the defenders, spending whole nights without sleep. As the forces of Khorne shattered the walls and attacked the hospital the tired hospice worker took a chandelier (showing brass balls in the process) and tried to save his patients with good old ultra violence. The rest... is history.

*Thostos Bladestorm: Footslogging Lord Celestant of the Celestial Vindicators. Impulsive jackass. Died a couple of times so now Nagash has part of his soul, he still wants to give Chaos a beating. During a battle with a Chaos Lord Varash, Thostos was hit with extremely powerful lighting bolt which triggered a powerful reforging and the results of it was the return of his memories, emotions and a name he once was - Prince Caeran of Wolf Keep (this happening is more proof of Nagash being made of much fail, seriously, how did this ever happen?). Apparently he is now the first Stormcast to be renewed, healed and with fresh purpose but not the last. In the final days of the Realmgate Wars he fought in the Battle for the All-Gates and crossed blades with Archaon, it went as well as you'd expect it to and Thostos is officially lost forever.

*Tarsus Bullheart: Footslogging Lord Celestant of the Hallowed Knights, leader of a warrior chamber named after him. Broody guy who's obsessed with duty and lets his hammer do the talking for him. Once a human from the realm of Shyish called Tarsem, he lived in a place called Helstone. During the Age of Chaos he fought alongside Mannfred Von Carstein against a Khorante horde but, Manfred being Manfred, Manfred abandoned them to save his own skin and Tarsem was taken by Sigmar and reforged after facing off against a Bloodthirster. Sigmar sent him and some of his warriors to the realm of Shyish to find Nagash and parley. Along the way they found Mannfred and freed him from a Khornate warband in exchange for his guidance and assistance in finding Nagash. After entering the underworld and an incident with Arkhan, Nagash appeared before them. This goes as well as you'd expect. After being flung across the chamber, Tarsus attacked Nagash to distract him in a successful last-ditch attempt to free the slain Stormcast Eternals' souls from Nagash's clutches. Tarsus was then killed by a VERY pissed off Nagash, who captured his soul and tortured as many of Sigmar's secrets from him as he could. When Nagash was done, Tarsus was a gibbering broken madman and nothing more could be learned from him. Eventually Ramus, Gardus and freaking Mannfred broke into Nagasshizar and demanded Tarsus's Freedom and Nagash was all "pffft, I'm done with him anyway" and released the broken Stormcast into their custody where he was promptly mercy killed in the hope that reforging would cure his madness.

*Ramus of the Shadowed Soul: Lord-Relictor of the Bullhearts warrior chamber and protagonist of the second set of Realmgate Wars audio-dramas. Once voice of reason to Tarsus and completely trusting in Sigmar and his grand plan, after Tarsus was lost to Nagash Ramus has been pressing for a mission to rescue his soul, despite the fact that at the moment Nagash and Sigmar are allies. The other Hallowed Knights are trying to get him to leave it alone and trust in Sigmar, but he hasn't been able to thus far. With Malign Portents pretty much destroying any alliance between Sigmar and Nagash, Ramus gets his chance to rescue Tarsus after all and puts aside his grudge against Mannfred with much difficulty.

*Tornus the Redeemed: Once known as Torglug the Despised, servant of Nurgle and Lord of Plagues, his soul was redeemed by Sigmar at the height of the last battle at Blackstone Summit in the realm of Ghyran when killed by Ghal Maraz in the hands of the Celestant-Prime. During his brief life as a mortal, Tornus was a righteous believer in Sigmar and his faith was unmatched by those that fought with him during the Age of Chaos against the nurgle invaders. At some point he was captured and left in a pit of filth and due to his stubbornness, faith and pride lived for many weeks only to succumb to the lies that Nurgle spoke to him during those months of captivity. Even then his soul, although corrupted and twisted, held out a spark of hope that his faith in Sigmar was not a lie and was rewarded with a chance for redemption as a Knight-Venator in services of the Hallowed Knights, <strike> this is so far as we know the first comeback from Chaos ever done in any of GeeDubs franchises.</strike> Captain Leonatos of the Blood Angels (Read the Blood Quest Trilogy) actually did it first, but this is the first time it has happened outside 40k. Is currently forming his own group of ex-Chaos Stormcasts, much to the suspicion of other Stormcasts, including his own Lord Castellant Grymn.

*Hamilcar Bear-Eater: Astral Templars' Lord Castellant turned Knight-Questor. Hamilcar is, to put it short, a lovely braggart, claiming even Sigmar was impressed the result of his stormcasting, also, it seems like he has an uncanny resemblance with the God-King. Currently he's on a hunt for Mannfred Von Carstein over backstabbing Tarsus. Got his own series by his creator David Guymer! Did we mention he beat a gatling-gun-armed skaven killakan while under sniper fire?

*Balthas Arum: An Anvils of the Heldenhammer Lord-Arcanum. Revealed to be Balthazar Gelt reborn as a Stormcast, which was heavily suggested in the novel and he is explicitly recognized as such by Nagash (who said that he looks forward to the possibility of having Aurum serve him a second time). He still has his arrogance, mount Quicksilver, and a preference and talent for Chamon Magic over any other. Considered to be the best mage of all the Anvils of the Heldenhammer and possibly all the Stormcasts, which makes some sense given who he used to be. His only real friend is Tyros Firemane of the Hallowed Knights who Balthus felt an instinctive kinship with despite being a surly loner around everyone else. Tyros is a Lord-Arcanum who specialises in fire magic, has a fiery red beard, and prefers to get his hands dirty exploring lost tombs and ancient cities rather than study. Like Balthas though, he feels a connection with the World-That-Was and thinks he may have lived there in a past life. This guy was most likely Thyrus Gormann, Gelt's friend/rival from the Old World. Pretty cool huh? Did Sigmar arrange it so that these two would meet again or are souls from the old world instinctively drawn to one another? Perhaps somewhere in the realms Kurt Hellborg and Ludwig Shwarzhelm are fighting side by side again in fancy new Stormcast duds.

*Setrus: A Lord Celestant leading a chamber called the "Imperishables" Who holds a massive grudge against Nagash. Three guesses who this guy use to be. Has a reputation for getting shit done and commands the respect and obediance of guys like Hamilcar Bear-Eater through sheer gravitas and force of will alone. Currently on route to reinforce Glymmsforge in Shyish.

*Gavriel Sureheart: A named Lord Celestant of the Hammers of Sigmar who GW started selling one day and didn't bother explaining his deal until 2nd Edition. Grew up as a gladiator slave named "Grub" at the Khornate fortress of Ratspike. One month into his gladiator career, he killed Ratspike's king with a spear chuck and kicked off a short-lived rebellion, being saved by Sigmar at the last moment (like most Stormcast). Currently the only sword-and-board foot LC and known for never wearing a helmet.

*The Shadespire Warbands:
#Steelheart's Champions: A Liberator Prime and his two flatmates who went into Shadespire to get a cure for the Reforging issues that plague the Stormcasts, but never made it out. The Champions are Obryn the Bold, a massive dude who's into his third Reforging and has become silent and brooding as a result, and Angharad Brightshield, a female Liberator and former smith who took to smashing in faces with hammers instead of smashing swords and metal.
#The Farstriders: A warband of three Vanguard Hunters in Shadespire. The Prime, Sanson Farstrider, has an accompanying star falcon, whereas his subordinates, Almeric Eagle-Eye and Elias Swiftblade, wield a shock axe and storm sabre respectively.
#Stormsire's Cursebreakers: Two Evocators and their Knight Incantor leader, set to Shadespire to seek out a cure for reforging-induced flaws. Averon Stormsire is a specialist of breaking curses, Rastus the Charmed fights with fathomless contempt, and Ammis Dawnguard treats her role with holy reverence.
#Ironsoul's Condemnors: Named versions of the Easy Build Sequitors. (more details when Dreadfane drops)

The word Daemon, or "δαίμων ‎", originated from Greek mythology, and was the term for spirits of nature and, well, anything but the Olympian gods. It wasn't a negative term at all, but rather a term that described creatures other than humans and animals, but as they often had ethics that was just as alien, they could seem malevolent at times. In Roman mythology, the term evolved to describe two guardian spirits who all people had attached to them, one benevolent and one malevolent. In /tg/ culture, daemon occasionally pops up as an alternative to "demon" or "devil" as the terminology for the fiendish races. The most iconic example of Daemons on /tg/ are those from the Warhammer settings.

Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder
Dungeons & Dragons has long used the term Daemon to refer to their Neutral Evil fiendish race, in contrast to the Lawful Evil Devils and the Chaotic Evil Demons. With the notorious anti-Satanic panic, daemons were renamed as Yugoloths in the Planescape setting, much as devils and demons became Baatezu and Tanar'ri, respectively. See the Yugoloth page for more details.

In Pathfinder, daemons are again the Neutral Evil fiendish race, because yugoloths aren't in the OGL. Born from the souls of Neutral Evil mortals, each breed of daemon embodies a specific kind of death, in comparison to the sin-born demons. For example, hydrodaemons represent death by drowning, whilst thanatodaemons represent death by old age. Answering to the four archdaemons, styled after the Horsemen of the Apocalypse - that is, Famine, War, Pestilence and Death - they hearken back to older descriptions of Neutral Evil in that they hate life itself.

In the Pathfinder setting's closest equivalent to the Blood War, daemons seek to annihilate all life, trying to sweep the multiverse clean of all life other than daemonkind. Once they have achieved that goal, they will then turn on each other, fighting to the death until only one daemon remains in existence. That daemon will take a moment to savor the emptiness of existence... and then commit suicide. They hate life that much. This naturally does not sit well with demons and devils who like existing, so they'll actually team up to stop them.

Infernum
In the D20 game Infernum by Mongoose Publishing, Daemon is the highest of the "common" titles, the furthest rank a hellspawn can achieve without becoming a noble of some description. It is awarded only to hellspawn who prove themselves true masters in a particular field of expertise - combat, diplomacy, spying, etcetera - and usually requires formal duels between would-be contestants under the eye of a local Captain. Ascending to the rank of Daemon awards a hellspawn with 2000 bonus experience points and grants them their first Noble Mutation.

Daemons are powerful beings, neither real nor unreal, which do not obey the laws of physics; indeed, their very existence is a warping of reality. They reside within the Realm of Chaos, and usually are organized into groups obeying the rule of Chaos Gods.

According to wikifags over at the official 40k Wiki, daemons can be created from one of the four Ruinous Powers through a process that's kind of similar to mitosis (except really REALLY unbalanced); a Chaos God splits off a tiny fraction of their own will, essence, and power, and in doing so creates a new daemon that is essentially an extension of whatever Chaos God made it. It's worth noting that the Gods can also use the souls of deceased individuals who died under specific circumstances to forge new daemons, and given the general shitfuckery that goes on in the galaxy that results in hundreds of thousands dying on a daily basis, this particular process of daemon spawning is typically more popular. Anyway, these newborn critters then invade the real world, buttfuck anyone they can get their horny claws on (even other rapists), and the resulting torrent of chaotic emotions that come from being violently buttfucked by a walking pile of Warp energy feed the Chaos Gods, causing their power to grow and allowing even more daemons to be born (that's right; no matter how many morning-after pills you take, a baby is guaranteed to pop out of someone, somewhere, sooner or later as a result of your fatal defilement). Hopefully now you're starting to realise how utterly ROFLSCREWED the many unfortunate races of the Milky Way are; simply seeing these assholes and getting scared by them essentially gives their gods the power to make even more of these assholes. <s>So man the fuck up, otherwise you're indirectly responsible for giving birth to these dudes</s> nope, sorry, not even growing a manly-ass pair is gonna save you from the guilt of making more daemons, since the bravery and fearlessness you feel will feed Khorne in particular and allow him to spawn a bunch of new horny penis-heads with sharp swords. For fuck's sake.

As I said; ROFLSCREWED. The only way to rid the galaxy of this Heresy-given-physical-form would probably be to kill off every single sentient living thing in the galaxy that has a presence in the Warp (Halo array, anyone?), thus 'starving' the Chaos Gods of their juicy succulent thirst-quenching emotions. Except the process of killing every poor sod off like that will only feed the Ruinous Powers even more, probably to the point where they become so powerful they could tear the galaxy multiple new ones at the click of their fingers.

But wait, it doesn't stop there. Daemons are functionally immortal in that even if their physical forms are destroyed in real space, their essence will return back into the Warp/RoC where they will be ready to wreak havoc once they have another opportunity to go back, unless there are special circumstances preventing them from doing so such as being trapped in an object (such as a Tesseract Labyrinth or enchanted item), or special incantations that imprison it. It is however also possible to give a daemon a "true death" in that it is permanently erased from existence, but this normally requires some incredibly rare artifact, absurdly complicated rituals, or a psyker/wizard of immense power (after all, by truly killing a daemon, you are in essence killing a tiny fraction of one of the Chaos Gods, so of course it'd be hard as fuck).

Lesser daemons like Bloodletters can normally be banished back by a proper bashing with a mace or a few dozen shots from a lasgun, or with a simple chant of a certain scripture that daemons fear. Greater Daemons, like a Bloodthirster or Great Unclean One, will normally either require extremely powerful dakka the size of Baneblades or in Fantasy, mass-stabbing from spears, cannon balls, the intervention of the Daemonhunters and similar specialists. They are also vulnerable to anyone an author wants to make look cool, resulting in approximately nine thousand two hundred and seventy-three Bloodthirsters being cruelly slain per novel written. Banishing Greater Daemons and Daemon Princes from real space for a long time often requires rituals which involve uttering the daemon's true name, which is a secret to begin with, almost always unpronounceable for a human, long enough to take minutes to utter, and can have nasty spells (like ones that fill your lungs with molten brimstone) included into them - and all this must happen while said angry daemon does his best to slaughter the ritual's participants.

It should be noted that even though the word "Daemon" is their widely accepted name by the mortal races, it is not necessarily the name they call themselves. One daemon in 40k even remarks that it is merely a name given to them by mortals (generally humans) due to its satanic origin (even if it technically has a more neutral, Greek origin, but scratch that, current fluff writers aren't the authors of the RoC and just because it's a daemon doesn't mean it knows jack shit about history). In conversations with mortals they actually like or at least tolerate, daemons often call themselves "Neverborn", and many Chaos worshippers prefer to use this term.

Warhammer Fantasy
In Fantasy they are made of magic, the source of (most) of which is the Realm of Chaos, and feed upon/inspire certain emotions in mortal beings. Thanks to the magical nature of the world, Daemons have little trouble manifesting within the world if they can find entrance to it. Indeed, any place that the Winds of Magic linger for too long can create Daemons of various kinds which will usually haul themselves towards the nearest place living (usually sapient) beings are found and wreak havoc, and after being "slain" find themselves within the Realm of Chaos for the first time. They can possess hosts, although the weak mortal frames limit their power and usually this is only done to commit acts of mischief.

Warhammer 40,000
In Warhammer 40,000 they are manifestations of the psychic emotions of psychically powerful species and individuals, like humanity and Eldar. They reside in the chaotic and hellish psychic dimension known as the Warp.
Daemons can only enter realspace under certain conditions, like being summoned in a ceremony or crossing through a warp rift. Even then, because they are made of warp energy and solidified emotion, they don't last long outside of the Warp, so in order to stick around, they have to either drag the Warp into realspace (resulting in a Daemon World in extreme circumstances) or be bound in a host. Psykers are the preferred choice of host, especially the powerful and uncontrolled ones, and they also happen to be a favourite method of opening Warp rifts -- their powers make them shine in the Warp, which attracts daemons like moths to a flame; all the daemons have to do is wait for the psyker's control to falter, and move in to take possession.
Sometimes, stupid people try to become a daemon, often a cult committing mass suicide, in order for their souls to fuse, much like what the Emperor did, but instead of reincarnating (since they can't), their souls will then join and become a daemon, because of their chaotic natures. Since souls are not sentient, someone's soul is not him, and it doesn't count as immortality. Daemon-Prince-hood however does, but you will suffer an eternity of Derp from Games Workshop.

Types
Ever since the ancient Realms of Chaos sourcebooks, daemons have been divided into three groups: Greater Daemons, Lesser Daemons, and Daemonic Creatures.

Greater Daemons
Greater Daemons are the most powerful of the Chaos God's immortal servants, and it's Very Bad News when they arrive in the real world. They are also the most difficult to banish, as they inevitably have tremendously long names, not to mention enough power to give any would-be banishers a hard time. Fortunately for those living in realspace, Greater Daemons are also the most difficult to summon: they require great sacrifices and elaborate ceremonies to even enter the real world, and will not last long without continued exposure to Warp energy. Unfortunately, where Greater Daemons go, hordes of lesser daemons inevitably follow. Greater Daemons are capable of independent thought and are highly intelligent, though this intelligence is heavily influenced by the emotions that form them. However, old fluff (the Realm of Chaos 5th edition army book from WFB) claimed they do not actually have a true personality or even a consciousness-they were simply hollow husks who did their master's bidding and are merely extensions of their god's presence. Any Daemon with a sort of will of their own was instead a Daemon Prince. This is no longer canon, as former Daemon Princes are now Greater Daemons. Some Greater Daemons are in fact mortals who were particularly revered by their chosen god (barring Dechala, who was just Slaanesh being a troll). Greater Daemons are also stated to have their own goals independent of their Chaos God, usually by just not advancing any greater goal but at times can even be a hindrance to the greater plans of Chaos; this is always met with forgiveness, as any punishment from a Chaos God is ridiculously rare for any Daemonic being (to date the only intentional punishments have been two Daemonettes who disobeyed Slaanesh, and one Greater Daemon who quite literally declared war on Khorne himself). Some players from either game have used this to justify more..."interesting" Daemon armies, such as the Carnival of Chaos or towns which have been taken over by Daemons.

Khorne's Greater Daemons are Bloodthirsters, giant axe-wielding warriors with massive leather wings. They are always angry, all the time. There are eight hosts of Bloodthirster, each of the eight possess their own lethal skills, armaments and title. Those of the eighth host, for example, are known as Bloodthirsters of Unfettered Fury. These monstrous beings are skilled if unsubtle generals and, armed with their infamous
combination of axe and whip, are most often seen commanding Khorne’s daemonic legions in their attacks on realspace. By comparison, those of the sixth rank, known as Bloodthirsters of Insensate Rage, are berserk destroyers who wield immense axes as tall as a fortress gate. Nothing can stand before such terrors on the battlefield, and the Daemons of Khorne are drawn instinctively on in the wake of their furnace-hot fury. The infamous Bloodthirsters of the third host, meanwhile, are known as the Wrath of Khorne. These beings are fire-breathing braggarts, hunters after glory who delight in humbling the mightiest heroes of the foe and butchering them in the name of their bloody lord.

Slaanesh's Greater Daemons are Keepers of Secrets, each carefully formed to tempt their foes and each looking to experience as many sensations as possible. Their appearance depends on <s>Slaanesh's mood</s> GW's policy at the time of creating them.

Nurgle's Greater Daemons are Great Unclean Ones, whose joviality is infectious...literally. They are so plague-ridden that they excrete daemons from every available opening. Mmm, is that Grimdark enough for you?

Tzeentch's Greater Daemons are Lords of Change, bird-like sorcerer daemons capable of predicting the future. They like to make plans.

Malal's Greater Daemons are "Guardian of Contradictions", looking like giant daemon goats with a woman's head for a tail (wtf). So far they are the closest interpretation we can get on what they actually look like. The name is only fanwankery based on concept art by Tony Ackland for Malal's Daemons which was never made into models.

Great Horned Rat's Greater Daemons are Verminlords, miniature versions of himself which represent his values (all of which are simply acting like a massive asshole) as well as the values of the Skaven clans (e.g. killing, defiling, killing, proliferating and killing).

Like the Heralds, which are Exalted Lesser Daemons, there are also Exalted Greater Daemons (Exalted Bloodthirster, Exalted Lord of Change, Exalted Great Unclean One, Exalted Keeper of Secrets, and Exalted Verminlord.) They are usable in Storm of Magic as Bound Monsters - creatures summoned through the Warp and binded to their summoners through Bound Scrolls. That doesn't stop them from NOMMING their masters given the chance, though.

In 40K, only the Exalted Bloodthirsters are mentioned. Eight of them belonged to the First Host and answer only to Khorne. Each of them commands eight Bloodthirsters of the second host, each of the second host commands eight of the third host, and so on. (8^8 ie. 16,777,216 Bloodthirsters, yeah we're fucked.)

Lesser Daemons
The lesser daemons are the most common sort, and serve as the foot soldiers for the legions of Chaos. Each one is roughly on par with a couple of Empire soldiers in Warhammer Fantasy Battle (generally stronger in close combat, but mostly lacking ranged attacks), or a Space Marine/Imperial Guard stormtrooper in Warhammer 40,000; they form the Core of a Warhammer Fantasy Battle Daemons of Chaos army, and the Troops of a Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Daemons army.

It's worth noting that the canon for many of the Daemons was changed by this fucker. The entire nature of the Daemons in general was mutated in his WH40K Daemon codex, and arguably not for the better. Whilst Bloodletters and Screamers are largely unchanged, Daemonettes were changed in both fluff and function (originally they were engineered by Slaanesh from Eldar souls to be both seductive AND deadly in combat, although they remain so in Fantasy) and Nurgle Daemons were changed dramatically (as was Nurgle's Rot, which changed from a survivable-if-formidable daemon-pox to a daemon-spawned AIDS with no cure that makes eventually makes you a Plaguebearer <s>no matter what</s> unless you commit suicide or die before you start worshipping Nurgle, which makes about as much sense as this, but whatever).

Khorne's lesser daemons are Bloodletters. They are disciplined as they march to battle, but they tear into enemies like nobody's business on the charge. They take skulls for the skull throne. Like Daemonettes, they underwent a significant model change for one edition, then went back to their old appearance but revamped to higher quality.

Slaanesh's lesser daemons are the Daemonettes (though they are not all female all the time, despite what the name might suggest). They can take whatever form is required to beguile their foes as they close in for the kill, though some browsers of /tg/ like them just the way they usually are. Their models have varied over the years from somewhat attractive bald sharp-toothed humanoids to six-titted graylings (you'll learn very quickly that Slaanesh has a rather noticeable tit fetish, as well as every other fetish out there, most likely).

Nurgle's lesser daemons are Plaguebearers. They are generally stoic creatures who are born from the souls of people who died of Nurgle's Rot. Their models have pretty much never changed, always being swollen-gutted decaying horned cyclops things. Yum.

Tzeentch's lesser daemons are Horrors. They start out pink-colored, hyperactive and batshit insane, and when they are destroyed, they split into two blue horrors which are morose and cynical little bastards. Their models started out as oversized heads with long spindly arms and legs, but they underwent a design change into big-mouthed tangles of tentacles and arms and have stayed like that pretty much ever since.

Malal's lesser daemons are Hook Horrors, which are once again just concept art made by Ackland for Games Workshop. They have two hook claws (hence the name) but overall they look like a cheap Halloween costume that resembles an anorexic crow whose head has been reduced to a bird-like skull.

The Chaos Gods of Order (who only existed in Warhammer Fantasy) lacked proper Daemons. One among them, Solkan the Avenger, blessed mortal Witch Hunters to wage war against his Chaotic Chaos kin in the physical world instead.

Furies can be thought of as lesser daemons of Chaos Undivided, although "Chaos Undecided" might be a more accurate description -- they served the Gods of Chaos, but did not devote themselves strongly to any one before dying.

Daemonic Creatures
Daemonic servants and creatures can be more powerful than lesser daemons, but are generally less intelligent. Some, classified as daemonic steeds, may be ridden or otherwise directed by a suitably impressive lesser daemon, or even a lucky mortal servant, while others, classified as daemonic beasts, are simply turned loose on the enemy and left to their own devices.

Khorne's daemonic steeds are Juggernauts, metal-skinned dog/rhino/lizard-creatures with molten blood, and his beasts are the Flesh Hounds (calling them "Khorne Dogs" earns your skull a place under Khorne's ass) which are sent to hunt Khorne's enemies (including his own servants, if they displease him). Bloodletters who managed to tame and ride Juggernauts are called "Bloodcrushers." Flesh Hounds are also used as mounts, although mostly by mortals like Arbaal.

Slaanesh's daemonic steeds are "Steeds of Slaanesh" (which has got to be a sex pun), and his/her beasts are called Fiends of Slaanesh. Daemonettes who ride Mounts of Slaanesh are called "Seekers." Both Fiends and Mounts feature body parts from lots of creatures, and have long tongues (all the better to 'taste' their prey, if you know what we mean...) and rows of human breasts (there's that tit fetish again).

Nurgle's daemonic steeds are "Palanquins of Nurgle" (it's a sedan chair towed by Nurglings) and his beasts are the uncreatively named Beasts of Nurgle. You MUST play with them, otherwise they get bitter and become something else called Rot Flies, which are, who would have guessed, giant rotting flies with spear-sized stings. Two splatbooks claim Nurgle has another (technically third, if one counts the aforementioned Rot Flies and Beast of Nurgle as being the same) daemonic creature in the form of the Plague Toads, huge diseased frog-things that can swallow humans whole and which all other Nurgle daemons look down on. The second even claims that there's a counterpart to Plague Drones in the form of "Pox Riders", which are Plaguebearers clinging to Plague Toads as they hop into battle.

Tzeentch's daemonic steeds are Screamers, giant manta rays that are called "Discs of Tzeentch" as when someone is riding them, Screamers somehow transform into discs. Needless to say, it's not pleasant for the Screamer. His beasts are called Flamers (not to be confused with the flamer weapon), since they look like they are made of fire.

Malal's daemon steeds are "Limbo-Ticks of the Anti-God" and his beasts are "Malal's Paradoxes of Pandemonium", both of which resembles every single arachnophobe's worst nightmare. The latter is usually colored black, grey and white like all things Malal-ish and have a fuckhuge maw meant for potential OMNOMNOMNOM with two sickle like claws to boot, while the former has the body of a giant louse with monkey like limbs and a giant human-like skull with a equally giant horn on it. Like the others, this is just /tg/'s name for Ackland's artwork.

Daemons of Order
While Chaos Gods of Law existed in earlier editions of Warhammer Fantasy, none were ever given Daemons. This changed with Age of Sigmar when the entire Lizardmen army were refluffed as "Seraphon" which have light magic running through their veins which is as corrupting to Chaos as Chaos is to mortals; Saurus blood can cleanse any of Nurgle's plagues, rots, and diseases, and the Slann are stated to be ahead of their enemies (which includes Tzeentch) in planning thanks to their scrying caste.
Sigmar also created the <strike>Sigmarines</strike> Stormcast Eternals which are mortals forged in magical metal who have the same properties as Daemons.

Chart
Not every god fills every slot, but a couple mortal equivalents are listed in parenthesis. Also note Furies are so pathetic they don't even get to be on the chart (then again, neither do Heralds).

Daemon Princes
For those mortals unfortunate enough to not be daemons to begin with, there is another route to immortality: serve a Chaos God and impress him or her so much that they grant the gift of daemonhood, resulting in an ascension into a Daemon Prince. In terms of power, they are typically only second to greater daemons, but a few especially strong mortal followers of chaos (traitor primarchs being the most famous) become more powerful than most greater daemons upon ascending. This is the ultimate goal of PCs in the Black Crusade roleplaying game, and indeed most worshipers of Chaos with even an ounce of ambition. Unfortunately, the Gods' attentions are fickle; would-be Daemon Princes who fall short of expectations may find themselves transformed into Chaos Spawn for their failures... Did I just...well...fuck... GLARBLRAWRGLARBL

Also, among followers of chaos, there are those who know that in the warp, the souls of dead men and women are actually devoured by the Chaos Gods; many of them actively try to escape this fate (Rape) by becoming Demon Princes.

Exalted Daemon
A sadly short-lived concept, Exalted Daemons were introduced in the Hordes of Chaos army book for Warhammer Fantasy Battles, and can be seen as the "Chaos-Loyal" analogue to the Daemonhost, or alternatively a Fantasy based, character tier version of the Possessed. Exalted Daemons are Chaos Champions who haven't earned the moxie to be turned into Daemon Princes, but have earned special attention, which results in a Daemon possessing and merging with their body. Attendant fluff implies that, unlike conventional possession victims, Exalted Daemons are fusions of mortal and daemonic soul, with the original inhabitant still being conscious and having some influence, rather than dead or pushed aside.

Mechanically, Exalted Daemons were essentially lower-grade Daemon Princes, using up two Hero choices instead of that editions 1 Lord choice + 1 Hero choice. They had one less point in Weapon Skill, Wounds, Initiative and Leadership than the big Daemon Princes, but the same ability to Fly, cause Terror, bear a Mark Of Chaos, and a Unit Strength of 5. They could be Sorcerers, maxing out at level 2, and wield up to 50 points of Daemonic Gifts.

Daemon Engines
Some daemons can be combined with machinery to create mighty Daemon Engines; this gives them some actual structural integrity and lasting power, as they are now firmly anchored in reality. The really big ones are made by the Forge of Souls, while others are made by Warpsmiths.
Some Daemon Engines are aligned with one of the Chaos Gods, while others (like Defilers and Soul Grinders) serve Chaos Undivided.
Even WFB has these in the forms of the Skull Cannon, Blood Throne, and Burning Chariot (and arguably the Hellflayer Seeker Chariot, even if it is not possessed), which are like possessed war machines mounted on top of possessed chariots as well as the Soul Grinder (which exists in 40k as well, though it only has a stone thrower arm rather than cannons everywhere).
Now that Chaos Dwarves are back as a regular WFB army, albeit made entirely by Forgeworld, they seems to be rather fond of Daemon Engines and pack a whole lot of them, including a daemon-possessed, steam-powered train which carries other war machines all around the battlefield while firing its giant cannon/crashing into the enemy lines mauling people with giant-sized pickaxes.

Half-Daemons
A handful of characters called or calling themselves half-Daemon have existed in both settings throughout the years (as well as Blood Bowl of course where the non-footbal rules are made up on the spot and never adhered to). Generally speaking these are from old or iffy lore sources, but one recent character does exist. For the End Times <strike>clusterfuck</strike> <strike>abortion</strike> <strike>monkey's paw result</strike> event a large kit of the Maggot Riders who ride giant maggots called Pox Maggots and serve Nurgle were released. One of the three riders was named Orghotts Daemonspew the "Bastard King of Icehorn Peak". His mother was a mortal witch (in the more classic sense of the word) and his father was a Great Unclean One (have fun imagining it). Icehorn exists on the rim between reality and the Warp, where Daemons are as much the people of the land as humans. Orghotts has an extremely long lifespan thanks to his half-Daemon nature, and longs to actually physically reach Nurgle's Garden which appears to him sometimes in his kingdom. He leads Daemon and Chaos human armies across the world, seeking not to become a Daemon Prince but be blessed by Nurgle into becoming a full-fledged Daemon alongside his father. The diseases produced within his own body have killed more than the armies he's lead, and beings connected to Nurgle know by smell that he's one of the "royal family" so to speak.

True Names
Daemons tend to hide their true names by giving themselves false ones. This is due to the fact that they can be banished if their true name should ever be uttered. The downside about true names is that all true names are quite a mouthful. Daemons' true names are very hard to pronounce if you aren't well a trained psyker like a Librarian or a full-fledged Inquisitor, and can actually make your throat sore. There was even one instance that uttering their true names can actually make your mouth literally burn. Some ridiculously powerful daemons, especially those of Tzeentch, have incredibly long names. One, recorded in the books of the Grey Knights, had a ten-minute long true name and quite a few Knights died attempting to perform the banishment rituals... though once they got to reciting it, there apparently wasn't much it could do to stop them.

"Daemons" of the Emperor
It has been speculated by some both within the Imperium and by those outside of it that the nature of beings such as Living Saints, the Legion of the Damned and the Sanguinor might lie closer to the servants of the Chaos Gods than most would feel comfortable with. They are likely made of the same warp-stuff as traditional Daemons and both appear and disappear in the same manner, though seemingly of either their own power or that of the Emperor's, usually to assist struggling Imperial forces. Further evidence for this is presented during the fall of Cadia, for when the Cadian Pylons briefly were brought fully online, the Legion forces present dissipated with the rest of the Daemons and Saint Celestine had much of her power suppressed. It serves as another piece of fairly solid proof that the Emperor is on the verge of godhood, if he isn't one already.

Of course, to even consider any of the above is tantamount to HERESY of the worst sort, so it's best to just go along with it.

wh40k-stub

The Horus Heresy is one of the biggest events in the Warhammer 40,000 story. Naturally, people like dreaming up alternate scenarios. Page still being expanded.

The Dornian Heresy
The Dornian Heresy was the 40K web forum Bolter & Chainsword's project to switch the allegiances of the various Primarchs during the Heresy, and explore what would have happened to the Legions under their command if they had fallen or not.

Unlike the following scenarios, which were largely thought exercises in random threads on /tg/, this was a full project, with accompanying Index Astartes articles and quite a bit of fluff, which can still be found quite easily.

Essentially, during the incident on Davin, Magnus the Red actually arrives to visit and exorcise the infection on Horus instead of relying on Erebus' rituals. While successful at both saving the warmaster's life and preventing him from becoming corrupted, it did leave him out of commission. Following their temper tantrum, the Chaos Gods decided that the next best choice was Rogal Dorn, who had been going on overdrive with his pet pain glove.

In the end, the Space Wolves fell to Khorne, the Blood Angels fell to Nurgle (surprising, given the actual novels imply that they would've fallen to Khorne, if anyone (actually makes a lot more sense, SW hates psykers like Khorne, and Baal is an iraddiated waste)) following an event almost identical to the canon Death Guard, the White Scars fell to Slaanesh, the Raven Guard fell to Tzeentch, the Salamanders fell to Malal, and Rogal Dorn himself was the arch-traitor, with his Imperial Fists supporting Chaos Undivided (renaming themselves the Black Legion after the failure of the Heresy). The Ultramarines did not fall to Chaos, but instead became Reasonable Marines; they seceded from the Imperium alongside much of the Ultima Segmentum, and now exemplify progress while fighting off the Tau. The Iron Hands seem to have gotten mixed up with the Necrons, while the Fallen Angels won out over the loyalist Dark Angels.

On the Imperial side, the Word Bearers became the Ecclesiarchy (with no Kor Phaeron to twist it all to heresy - he proved incompatible with the gene-implants), the Iron Warriors remained siege masters, the Sons of Horus became the crusading Black Templars (after almost identically disowning Horus' foolishness which led to him being the new Sanguinius), the Emperor's Children remained exemplary perfectionists (except for Fabius Bile, but he's dead now... maybe), the Thousand Sons became blind psychic warriors (see: Grey Knights), the Death Guard became the core of the Inquisition, the World Eaters became serious instead of angry, the Night Lords remained loyal Scary Marines, and the Alpha Legion were just as sneaky and just as anti-Ultramarine, but still loyal (apparently the Cabal wasn't that convincing in the Dornian Heresy).

How the Space Marines are organized is also flipped, as the legions falling to Chaos occurred because of them being separated by all sorts of circumstances, so Abaddon (who takes over as leader of the Imperium after the Emperor's battle with Dorn) organized the legions into a few giant armies (by Space Marine standards).

It's pretty awesome...except that, as most alternate heresies are wont to, it all amounts to some absurd amounts of marine-wank. Perhaps the most particular is the Reign of Blood, where the Sisters of Battle never existed, because they were wiped out by the Word Bearers when they were still the Brides of the Emperor, and Goge Vandire (who was now the new Chapter Master following Lorgar becoming a martyr post-heresy) wasn't overthrown by some simple preacher, but by a novice marine named Sebastian Thor. Meanwhile, all of the xenos factions are left to mere footnotes or mentions (just as Games Workshop intended) and the impact this has had on the Imperium at large is left to interpretation.

The Imperial Heresy
The Imperial Heresy
In the Imperial Heresy, the God-Emperor of Mankind decided "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and sided with the Gods of Chaos.

The Eldar Gambit
In the Eldar Gambit, Eldrad meets the Emprah the day before the final assault on the Vengeful Spirit, offering assistance in exchange for closer Eldar - Human cooperation later.

The basis of the pact is that instead of taking the mortal blow that Horus throws at him on accident, he does it deliberately, and uses the energy of his own death to attack the Chaos Gods directly, specifically Slaanesh. He steals the stomach of Slaanesh and incorporates it into himself, so now all Eldar souls will go directly to him when they die, keeping them safe from the depredations of Chaos.

The thread was mostly speculation on how a united Imperium of Man and Eldar Empire would work together... and it's actually pretty awesome. Ollanius Pius being revered by guardsmen as an Avatar of Khaine and killing Horus right after Horus defeated the Emperor (albeit he was weakened from fighting the Emperor), Space Marines with soulstones to keep the forces of Chaos away from loyal marines, a fractured Adeptus Mechanicus (with four factions - Traitor, Loyal, Machine God fanatics and Fundamentalist (doesn't use Eldar tech that is now more freely available)), and more.

The Hektor Heresy, AKA the /tg/ Heresy
The /tg/ Heresy

/tg/ Creates an Alternate Universe of 40K Astartes legions and discusses how the heresy would play out between them. Since then it has spiralled into a near-total overhaul of the 40K universe as a whole. Although there are variations in quality and completion, the project feature original art and write-ups for the new primarchs and their legions, original regiments of the Imperial Army, a new take on the Squat, and other warhammerania.
For those interested in the origins of the project: Archived /tg/ threads can be found at http://archive.moe/tg/thread/34414189/ (Initial Legion creation) and http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/34432982/ (Alternate Heresy thread)

Imperium Asunder, AKA the /tg/ Heresy II: Electric Boogaloo
Imperium Asunder

Yet another alternate Heresy with all-new Primarchs, only one where the Emperor is outright killed and Chaos consumes half the Galaxy, while the Loyalists fracture into a number of warring empires on the Eastern Fringe.

Warmasters Triumvirate, AKA the /tg/ Heresy III: Reloaded
Warmasters Triumvirate

A third alternate Heresy with new Primarchs. After the Emperor is incapacitated relatively early on, he leaves three of his sons in charge of the Great Crusade, the Warmasters Triumvirate. When more power is given to the Council of Terra and regular humans, tensions begin to rise. This one has 21 Space Marine legions, pitted against each other in a three way Brotherwar between the Imperial Loyalists, Chaos Traitors and Confederated Seperatists.

The Roboutian Heresy
The true heresy has begun: Papa Smurf takes the place of Horus and fucks over the Imperium. Much shedding of blood, sweat and tears ensues, with generous helpings of manliness on the side. It's pretty awesome.

Inspired by the above mentioned Dornian Heresy, circumstances happen that lead to the Primarchs who turned traitor in canon to stay loyal and the loyalists to turn traitor. For this Heresy's loyalists this ranges from having a small point that causes a major divergent in their lives, like Konrad and Angron, to having completely different lives like Lorgar. The Traitors all at a certain point have a moment that led them towards Chaos, some better done than others, even the fic's writer admits El'Jonhson's could have been done better, but the rest bring much tragedy and sorrow, except Vulkan who is this timeline's Nagash. Even then, Vulkan's moment of divergence is absolutely horrifying and the only reason it isn't sad is because how awful Vulkan is in this timeline. However, even Vulkan's horrors pale in comparison to that of Corvus Corax.

Can be read here (also contains sidestories and word of god).

Warhammer High
Technically an Alternate Heresy, as in there was no Heresy at all and the Emperor decided Malcador's ideas were not stupid after all and made 19 female Primarch children to give the Primarchs some responsibility Post-Great Crusade, something to live for, a chance for family, and because he really wanted Grandkids.

Imperium Ascendant
The Most Fuck-Ass Awesome Timeline: The Legion of the Damned are sent back in time by the Throne-Emperor to stop the scattering of the Primarchs by Argel Tal. After they succeed, the Emperor of the past looks upon the future that is the galaxy of 40K and vows to ensure that such a nightmare will not come to pass as the Ascendant Imperium strikes out against the darkness. Can be read here.

Brotherhood of the Lost
Another one by Bolter & Chainsword, with the starting question being: "What if the canon legions were replaced by lost legion projects?" A three-way war between the loyalists, insurrectionists, and the smaller suzerainty, lasting for decades. Sub-forum can be found here, and a wiki here.

Nobledark Imperium
Nobledark Imperium

Probably one of the more divergent Alternate Heresies out there. Like Warhammer High technically an Alternate Heresy despite there not being a heresy at all. Nobledark is as much a retelling of the 40k universe with intentional twists as it is a straight alternate timeline, sort of like Hektor Heresy or Imperium Asunder, though in general all parties recieve a buff to reason and common sense, as you would expect from a universe that is nobledark as opposed to grimdark.

Instead of earning the ever-lasting hatred of the Chaos gods by doing REDACTED that led to the creation of the primarchs (who in this timeline are the Emperor's greatest, though otherwise similar to canon in name and deed), in this timeline the Emperor did so by plotting with Eldrad to <s> create a last alliance of men and elves</s> agreeing to a team-up between the nascent Imperium and the eldar to free Isha from Nurgle’s garden to weaken the Chaos Gods in exchange for access to the Webway and anti-Chaos lore.

The Imperium and eldar expect to go their separate ways after the Raid on Nurgle's Mansion, until Chaos decides to supercharge the War of the Beast in order to show those mortals what happens when you steal fire from the gods. The Chaos Gods don't manage to turn any primarch (though they get really close with Horus), the Emperor having told the primarchs what Chaos what it is and why it is important to not touch it beforehand. Humanity and eldar are forced into an alliance once again, resulting in an Aesir-Vanir-esque political marriage between the Emperor and Isha. Although things are bad with the biggest green tide the Imperium has ever seen and Luther convincing the majority of Dark Angels to go traitor, they only gets worse when the true mortal catspaws are revealed.

Because that buff to competence and common sense? Chaos gets it too. And in a spectacular display of long-term planning, instead of consuming ALL of the pleasure cult-worshipping eldar in the Eye upon their birth, Slaanesh only consumed MOST of them. So now in addition to daemons, orks, and traitors, you have an entire army of insane, Chaos-worshipping fair folk who just declared holy war on the Imperium and their heretic kin.

And it all kind of spirals out from there.

Can also be found at Nobledark Imperium Drafts, the other main page for the project.
