Where the Immortals are the Necrons' Shock troopers who supply heavy fire power, the Deathmarks bring elite, surgical threat removal to the board. Sixty million years ago, when the Necrontyr were still made of meat and blood, the Deathmarks did more or less exactly what they do now: appear from the shadows, kick the fuck out of their target, and then leave. The Deathmarks received high-quality shells during bio-transference, and thus have remained largely unchanged through the millennia. But military honor tradition among the Necrontyr impose harsh restrictions upon the deployment of Deathmark squads. Among each other and any 'honorable' alien opponents, Deathmarks are taboo. But most Overlords see other races as ignoble and inferior, so few balk at the idea of deploying the assassins, except for Nemesor Zahndrekh; the crazy old coot won't use Deathmarks against anyone, because they're all Necrontyr to him.

Deathmarks don't deploy to the field of battle with the rank and file; instead, these cyclopean laser-rapebots spend their time in the inter-dimensional break room watching their intended target on 4-dimensional wide screen monitors and doing fuck all until the commander summons them, or whenever the fuck they feel like doing something. Typically they are left to their own devices, the nobility having great faith in their long practiced art of death. Once it's time to get shit done, they place a hovering green halo of light on the head of their target or targets, thus the name Deathmarks. This mark lasts about one hour, but given their dimension-hopping abilities that's usually more than enough time.

On the tabletop, Deathmarks operate best in smaller squads. If you have 10, field 2 squads of five instead of 1 squad of 10. That way you can make better use of your firepower, because the turn these guys Deep Strike they wound EVERYTHING on a 2+ their other special rule is Ethereal Interception, which allows any unit of Deathmarks in reserves to immediately come in via Deep Strike in response to any enemy unit coming in from reserve. They can do this on the enemy turn. Space marines Drop Pod in? Interception. Creed outflank some Baneblades on you? interception. Stormraven-dropped Terminators got you down? Intercept that shit. On top of all that juicy goodness,if they [Deep Strike] during your enemy's turn you can SHOOT DURING THEIR SHOOTING PHASE (but you can't shoot on your next one, to solve the hits just do like in close combat solving all the attacks, and then removing models from play) their 24 inch range sniper rifles are Rapid Fire, a level of shootiness so delicious that 6th ed Tau ripped it off as soon as they saw it. For 18 points a model you better goddamn field some Deathmarks, unless having 3 C'tan Shards is the only thing that does it for you anymore.

Aza'Gorod, AKA The Nightbringer, Warhammer's Grim Reaper, the Necrons' Mortarion, Has No Friends or FUCKING CHEESE! is one of the main C'tan gods in Warhammer 40k alongside the Deceiver and the Void Dragon that is still relevant enough to be talked about. The other C'tan gods have been eaten, shelved in a GeeDubs corner, or are just hiding in a cupboard somewhere.

Spooky Story Time
The Nightbringer is the C'tan most directly responsible for unleashing the Necrons on the galaxy. His feeding on the star in the Necrontyr home system caused the solar radiation output that gave the Necrontyr such short, cancer-ridden lives. This in turn caused their obsession with death and spurred them to colonize other worlds. These interstellar voyages led to the necrontyr encountering the Old Ones, and the disparity in health and lifespans caused the necrontyr to resent the Old Ones and wage war against them. All this led to contact between the C'tan and the necrontyr, and in some accounts the Nightbringer was also the first C'tan discovered. Finally, their hatred of the Old Ones and wanting to escape their sickly biology are the two main reasons the necrontyr leaders accepted the C'tan's offer to be roboticized into the Necrons.

During the War in Heaven, it was the entity that single handedly enforced the concept of the fear of death or at least the Grim Reaper in the 40k Galaxy. The Nightbringer craved worshippers but its followers soon descended into murderous insanity since being in its presence induced horrifying, bloodthirsty visions. He, along with the Outsider, another C'tan, was infamous for being a team killing fucktard during the War in Heaven after he and the Outsider were tricked by both the Deceiver and Cegorach to eat their fellow C'tan brethren in order to gain more power. As you can imagine, things did not go too well for the Necrons and the C'tan during that incident, making the Deceiver one of the biggest walking fuck ups in 40k history.

Consequently, the Nightbringer, alongside the rest of the C'tan (save for maybe the Void Dragon and the Outsider), were stabbed in the back by their former slaves, the Necrons, subsequently being turned into fucking Pokemon after getting blasted into a million pieces. You can say all you want, but at least Khaine was treated with dignity and respect by the Eldar after he was shattered by a bajillion pieces unlike the poor C'tan who have turned from one of Warhammer's most sinister forces into a fucking joke.

To give an idea of how low the Nightbringer has fallen, he got basically stared down by Uriel Ventris who told him to piss off while threatening to blow the both of them up, with the Nightbringer realizing Uriel wasn't afraid to die just to make him suffer (to be fair, the Nightbringer slaughtered most of Uriel's squad, cut off his lieutenant's arm and ruptured Uriel's primary heart). And that was prior to the sharding retcon; it's only gotten downhill from there.

On the Tabletop
Before the Warddex, the Nightbringer was the hardest thing to kill outside of Apocalypse with toughness 8, five wounds, and a 4+ invuln save (Remember when that was impressive?). As a monstrous creature with S10 and loads of attacks that ignored invul saves, getting near him was a death sentence. The Warddex removed it entirely in favour of more customisable C'tan Shards. It was re-introduced in 7th edition, in a weaker state, in an edition with rampant power creep and in a codex with the strongest Necron roster yet. The C'tan went from being one of the most cheesy units Necrons had, to one of the weakest. Noticably a Relic in the Shield of Baal makes the Nightbringer Toughness 8 instead of 7, making it no longer die to boltguns, which is sort of a big deal if your opponent isn't playing Dark Eldar.

8th Edition

8th Edition is the return of the Nightbringer. While still at toughness 7 with 4+ save and 8 wounds, he is now a character and thus unable to be shot at if he is not the closest unit. This adds so much to his survivability and he can now actually make it to close combat. However, the biggest change is that now the Nightbringer can Rip and Tear virtually anything. His weapons are Gaze of Death (Assault D6, 12" range, -4 AP D3 damage) and Scythe of the Nightbringer (AP -4, D6 damage). Both of these weapons hit on 2+, thanks to the Nightbringer's Ballistic/Weapon Skill, and wound on 2+ thanks to their own special rules. On top of that, he gains 1 Power of the C'tan (now 2 powers with the Codex). The most useful one being Antimatter Meteor, which is basically a 24" range Smite. Time's Arrow can also be useful in certain situations where you want to snipe out an annoying character. Seismic Assault seems the weakest of the three powers, so it is not recommended to ever take it.

(Mathhammer time)

Antimatter Meteor requires a 2+ to cast, and deal D3 mortal wounds to the closest unit, or D6 if the casting roll was a 6.
In short, a 1/6 chance to fail to cast (0 damage), a 4/6 chance to deal D3 (average 2 damage), and a 1/6 chance to deal D6 (average 3.5 damage).
<br>Average damage per use = 1.92 mortal wounds

Seismic Assault deals a mortal wound on a roll of 6 and rolls one die per model in the closest unit.
In short, a 1/6 chance to cause a mortal wound per model in the unit.
<br>Average damage per use against a single model = 0.17 mortal wounds
<br>Average damage per use against a unit containing 11 models = 1.83 mortal wounds
<br>Average damage per use against a unit containing 12 models = 2 mortal wounds

Antimatter Meteor is expected to perform better against units with less than 12 models, meaning that (in most cases) it should be preferred ahead of Seismic Assault.

Note: With its lower dice count, Antimatter Meteor additionally has the potential to benefit more than Seismic Assault from a stratagem re-roll.

(Mathhammer end)

Bottom line, if you play Necrons you always take the Nightbringer. No questions asked, he is too good not to take and he even costs just 230 points (or 12 power, if you play Power Levels), which is nothing for what he offers in offensive power.

DoW Dark Crusade
The Nightbringer also appeared in Dawn Of War: Dark Crusade, sorta. The Necron Lord has the ability to turn into a manifestation of the Nightbringer, which skyrocketed his DPS (not as much as what Relic units had, but still high - enough so that when executed properly and against careless players to don't move their units out of range of his scythe, the Nightbringer will flat out kill any of the other race's Demon/Relic units before his timer runs out), but more importantly, he was INVINCIBLE while the ability was active, meaning the best any poor sap facing it could do was tarpit it to hell and back until it wore off and hope it didn't kill anything too valuable.

Drazhar (Dark Eldar speak for Living Sword), also known as Master of Blades, was first encountered at the gates of the Great Shrine of the Incubi in Commorragh. He walked straight into the shrine, cutting his way through any guards who tried to stop him. When he reached the inner sanctum, Drazhar challenged the enthroned Hierarch of the Shrine. The Hierarch stepped down from his throne into the dueling circle with Drazhar and took up a battle stance. The Hierarch's self-assured superiority soon evaporated when his challenger blurred into action. The duel took only a couple of minutes until it ended with Drazhar stepping over the Hierarch's dismembered corpse before cleaning his blades and making a small bow.

No one knows Drazhar's true identity. There are no records of him in any Incubus shrines and no one had heard of him before he walked in to the Great Shrine. Even the name Drazhar is ceremonial, meaning Living Sword. Even though he killed the Hierarch, and has since killed everyone bold enough to challenge him, he hasn't taken up any leadership post, not even becoming a lowly Klaivex. He could become Hierarch by right of conquest, or hold any position he wanted due to his skill, but he seems to totally lack ambition and exist only to kill. This frustrates the other shrine lords immensely, because they have no way of dealing with such a creature, so with nothing else to do they gave him the title of Executioner, reserved for the champion of the order.

After Drazhar had invaded the Great Shrine and killed its Hierarch, gossip and rumors started to spread. Some say Drazhar is the Fallen Phoenix Lord, Ahrha, and that Drazhar's armour is filled with nothing but bone-dust. We can't say for sure about the armor, since he's never once taken it off (not even to eat or sleep). He also never speaks, the closest he does to conversation is physical gestures related to battle, a nod or tilt of his head and not killing someone in a fight - and the latter three are reserved for Incubi he respects. Regardless of nature, he certainly does have the same stat-line as the other Phoenix Lords, and the Incubi are in many ways a dark reflection of the Eldar Aspect Warriors.

Taller and more lithe than other Incubi, Drazhar is fast as lightning. Dark Eldar warriors move at a blur when viewed by humans. Incubi strike even faster. Drazhar moves so quickly that it leaves other Incubi wondering what the hell just happened. He wears an ancient Incubus Warsuit, perhaps even the original Warsuit, which is significantly tougher than those worn by others of the sect. Drazhar uses demiklaives, formerly known as disemboweller blades, which can also be used by deadly Klaivex Incubi leaders.

As of now, he's also dead. Thanks Jain Zar. On the other hand, some surviving Klaivex named Dara'kinia Thremense found his armor and placed it on. She then loses herself soon afterwards.

Tabletop
With 8th edition, his statline actually got even better, with an additional wound, and with how powerful klaives are, he's a hell of a lot stronger. Not only that, he also buffs nearby Incubi, <s>not only offering turn 3 Power From Pain early but</s> (not anymore). As of Phoenix Rising, our fine friend here gives +1 to wound rolls, resulting in some tank-killing backflips. He gets to fight twice in the combat phase if he charged, his Demiklaives allow him to make 2 additional attacks at the cost of using his base strength of 4, and with his brand new model he gains the Lethal Precision ability, as well as 2 damage base. Add this all together and you have 4 damage on <i><b>unmodified</b></i> wound rolls of <s>5’s and</s> 6’s. Now get out there and charge some Leman Russes.

The Duke of pirates, Traevelliath Sliscus (Better known as "The Duke" or "Sliscus the Serpent") is the Dark Eldar answer to Prince Yriel as top space pirates, acting as the posterboy for exiled Dark Eldar who want to do what they want 'cuz a pirate is free (a popular theory is that he is Yriels father, given the mystery as to how the Iyanden craftworlder was conceived). He is as talented as a Shakespearean wordsmith, carving epic poetry into his prisoners bodies after injecting them with a buttload of poisons. He is also essentially David Bowie circa 1977.

This is how Lady Malys describes the Duke: "Amoral, despicable and impeccably dressed into the bargain". When other Dark Eldar say that about you, you know you have some serious style.

See, Sliscus was originally just some pencil-pushing something-or-other within Commorragh. However, he decided that boring shit sucked and stole three ships from Port Carmine and began his personal corsair warband, the "Sky Serpents". And so he's stuck around for a few thousand years, looting and pillaging all over the galaxy, whilst the inquisition sat slack-jawed wondering where their ships went. He became the greatest pirate that ever plied the sea of stars, which must be a testament to his skill as the commander of a legion of backstabbing bastards in his megalomaniacal vision to take over the galaxy behind a certain armless failure, <s>a rotting psychic vegetable</s> HERESY! BLAM, and the Tomb Kings IN SPACE.

Not like that didn't affect his sanity, though. The guy's got serious moodswings which manage to have some hilarious effects that he might have learned from the legendary Assholetep. For example, he decided to parlay with some planetary government, and then decided to butcher all of the Hive Nobility because their envoy mispronounced his name. Like an asshole. Also, to add to his Megalomania, he is pretty paranoid (which makes him ironically perfectly rational for a citizen of Commorragh), feeding himself various poisons to build up his immune system. He also has a thing for wearing different clothes every single day to the point that he'd never wear the same set twice; in the novel "Lukas the Trickster" (where Sliscus is the main antagonist) Sliscus reflects that it's his personal preference, he will wear the same thing more than one day in a row but under protest. Also every outfit he wears is made of or includes body parts of most recent person he killed. Apparently his banner is also made from the flayed skin of the Lord Admiral of Segmentum Tempestus' Segmentum Fortress. Sliscus has also been said to be amused by being called a serpent; he considers himself more dangerous than any animal and thinks that "serpents" should be renamed "Sliscus' " after him instead of the other way around.

Sliscus is also a Warhammer 40k drug lord. He has access to all the best combat drugs and poisons, which are reflected in his rules, which buff himself and the army. He's also the second-most pimping Dark Eldar after Asdrubael Vect. In the 5th edition Dark Eldar "...he has his skin scrubbed thoroughly by teams of concubines every time he shares breathing space with a lesser species." and there are two reasons he's implied to be very popular with the ladies of the Wych cults (and only one of them is his drugs). So not only does he kill your army, he sweeps your girl off your feet and shows her a better time than you ever gave her. Again, in the novel about Lukas, Sliscus is revealed to have once conducted a raid on a world from a hot-tub while being serviced by a team of concubines. This confirms Sliscus to be up there with Illic, Lukas, Vect and Big-E Emperor as one of the biggest ladies' men in 40k.

The Duke's most well-known engagement was against the Space Wolves, when he organized a raid on Fenris. Inevitably he was forced to quit the planet (his ego got too big and he went after Astartes and learned why no one else is that crazy), after Lukas the Trickster and his squad bested Lady Malys and had her lead him to the Duke's camp. As the Marine pursued the Duke, Sliscus did manage a rare feat for any Xenos, defeating a Space Marine in combat - especially a named character, and cut out one of Lukas' hearts (the only other Xenos who have done this in lore are other named characters such as Lelith, Imotekh, Obyron and the Swarmlord). Before he could finish slaying Lukas, however, he spat acid in the Duke's face and escaped. Considering what Astartes acid spit can do, good thing for Sliscus he had a renegade Haemonculi on hand to fix the damage/regrow his head.

Despite being awesome and a fan favorite, games-workshop decided to cut the Duke from the new edition of the codex, much to the disappointment of Dark Eldar fans, RIP Duke :(

If they ever do a live-action movie of 40k, in lieu of the late David Bowie, Duke Sliscus should be played by Christopher Waltz.

Kheradruakh the Decapitator is a Dark Eldar special character Mandrake, and just a creepy fucking asshole. Kheradruakh isn't his real name, but a title that means "He Who Hunts Heads" or "Decapitator" in the Evil dialect of Eldarese, meaning that "Kheradruakh the Decapitator" translates to "he who hunts heads and cuts them off". He has eyes of pure darkness and appears to be half-shadow--all mandrakes are rumored to be the descendants of true Eldar and some kind of quasi-daemonic beings that live in the space between the Warp and the Materium. He also paid a Haemonculus to attach a second pair of arms to him just to look more like a cross between a meth head and a trapdoor spider. Or maybe so he can jerk off while murdering people. Just, fuck, I don't even like looking at him.

Kheradruakh doesn't speak, he simply giggles like the creepy fuck he is. Like the other two Dark Eldar HQ choices who barely communicate (Lelith Hesperax and Drazhar), he probably puts the various warriors and wyches under their command in a tight spot when they need orders. But unlike Lelith and Drazhar, who can at least lead by badass example (and Lelith does speak, it's just most of the time she chooses not to), Kheradruakh wanders off on his own, GOING MARBO by teleporting in through fucking shadows because he's GODDAMN MAGIC (Level 4 Wizard: Lore of Shadow). His M.O. is then going to cut off a particular target's head, and just leaves the same way he came in. Which is a fucking area that simply doesn't have light bouncing off of it at the moment. He doesn't even go through the Warp or some in-universe plausible thing like that. He's just one of those slasher film villains that seems to teleport between jump-cuts. So he just chops a head off and pisses off, leaving all the Kabalite warriors leaderless and all the Wyches shivering and ready to take a shower. In the game rules, he's so solitary that he lacks independent character and can't even join a unit of other mandrakes. Ugh, Christ, fuck this guy.

He gets paid an Archon's ransom to do this (old lore put it at the price of two hundred thousand souls for him to kill one guy of his payer's choosing... even his fee is ridiculous), even though I'm not quite sure how people get a hold of him. Does he have an agent? A LinkedIn profile? No, he can't, because he doesn't fucking talk and Comorragh still uses Xanga. The only explanation is that he's always watching you. From any and every shadow.

The worst thing is, he collects the heads he takes and brings them back to his lair like they're Beanie Babies. He flays them with his bare hands, and examines them. With his tongue. While almost certainly not washing his hands afterwards. And he's really fucking anal about it, like one of those people who can't bare to see a single smudge on the mint-condition packaging of their Yak Face action figure. He usually throws away all but one in a decade of killing (leaving them lying on the floor, what a slob) and puts that lucky son of a bitch on display in a little cubby hole. Despite his incredibly high standards, his enormous chamber is almost full, making him a cross between a trading card collector, a trap door spider, and THE FUCKING HOLOCAUST. And all these skulls are staring at a single point in the center of his lair. And holy shit, that psychic pressure is boring a hole straight through the reality of Commorragh into some realm of primal darkness - and remember, the Dark City is already in nowhere-land, halfway between reality and hyperspace hell. His disciples believe that when whatever is down there breaks through everyone but his children/followers, the Mandrakes, are S.O.L. Everyone in Commorragh will drown in a tide of crazy warlock shit out of fucking nowhere, and then possibly beyond Commorragh.

But man, really people, Kheradruakh is just the worst. Fuck that guy. As of the 2014 Codex Kheradruakh is no longer a playable unit. In addition, his fluff was downgraded to a single paragraph as a legendary mandrake. Hurray!

However, the asshole has returned! That's right, as of Gathering Storm, part 2, he managed to obtain the last skull he needed (that of Vect's enforcer - and Phil Kelly OC - Valossian Sythrac) to open a way into the Mandrake's dimension and spread the shadow realm across dozens of miles of Comorragh, becoming the Mandrake King. With his shadow army, he sealed off the breach in Khaine's Gate, preventing a load of Daemons from flooding into Comorragh. Whether this is a good thing is yet to be seen but it does effectively mean he went from being the least important Dark Eldar character to actually being the most important since he's now the head honcho of Comorragh.

Kheradruakh also played a minor role in the Great Crusade. It turned out that he and his Mandrakes had been the Eldar preying on Nocturne and he and Vulkan in particular had a grudge stemming from Vulkan being the only quarry to ever escape Kheradruakh (since all Xenos need some human to lose to - although the switch makes a bit more sense ; there's not much that a medieval tech society could have done against a race that has guns that shoot dark matter or hypersonic crystals of solid poison from high-speed aircraft, even with a Primarch). They would clash again briefly when Vulkan returned to Aelindrach seeking a way to Terra, where Kheradruakh took some shots at Vulkan till the Primarch made a bright light and struck the King of Mandrakes once, sending him fleeing for his life. During the fight Vulkan was pushed to his limits by the Mandrake King who struck killing blow after killing blow forcing the Primarch to utilize every bit of his strength and skill to avoid being decapitated and taken away for creepy sexy time in the Aelindrach. Kheradruakh was driven away wounded but very much alive making him one of the few "mortal" characters who has shown the ability to duel a Primarch one on one, this makes him arguably the most powerful warrior the Dark Eldar have ever produced.
