Making up the majority of Chaos fleets, Cruisers are medium-sized warships known for their speed and maneuverability. Able to function independently for long periods, Cruisers usually function as raiders for the Traitor fleets, striking deep into Imperial territory to cause havoc.

During fleet actions Cruisers will screen the approach of their fleet in conjunction with their Escorts. Once the battle starts in earnest however, these ships will join the battle line, and contribute their firepower to single out targets of opportunity.

Cruiser Classes
Basic
Murder
Once the Cruiser of choice before the Lunar-class went into production, the Murder-class was armed by the best Plasma cannons that the Mechanicus could provide. Formidable at range, and equipped with powerful engines, a disproportionate number of ships of this class went Traitor in the millennia leading to the Gothic War, what a coinkadink!

In battle, the Murder class is a formidable foe. The Murder is armed with powerful mid-ranged Macro plasma broadsides, while a long-ranged Lance battery is mounted on the prow. The Murder-class is even more deadly when working in groups, as the combined firepower of several ships is enough to bring down even a Battleship, such as when three craft destroyed the Relentless Persecution near the end of the Gothic War.

Since it’s name is “Murder” and was replaced, these ships are definitely yandere.

It is armed overall, with 1 Double-Barrel Heavy Lance Artillery and 4 Macro Battery Weapons.

*Length: 5km

Emasculator
The funnily-named Emasculator is a mix-weapon Cruiser whose name wouldn't be out of place for the cuckoldry of Slaanesh.

Weapons wise, it's really not that different from the Slaughter, just instead of having the merged weapon bays, they are distinct and separate, which seems to somehow drop its overall damage output somewhat. In addition, not having the merged weapon bays, while making things easier to read stat-wise due to the way info is displayed in-game, you lose some redundancy with the Emsaculator compared to the Slaughter, since the destruction of a weapon bay here means losing all Lances or Macros on one side of the ship, as opposed to the loss being an even split with the merged bays.

On the plus side, the Emasculator is the only Chaos Cruiser with a heavily armoured prow section, granting any hits that come from the front a better damage reduction. This comes at the cost of engine speed, however, and might not be as useful of a trade-off to most people, since Chaos ships like to spend most of their time making circling broadside attacks at long ranges, and not presenting their front armour.

It is armed overall, with 1 Triple Barrel Light Macro Turret, 2 Macro Battery Weapons, 2 Double-Barrel Lance Battery Weapons and 1 Triple Barrel Missile Turret.
Devastation
A Carrier-class, the Devastation-class carries two Launch Bays, which are supplemented by long-ranged Lance broadsides, and a prow Macro Weapons battery. A fairly versatile and self-sufficient class that is more in line with a Carrier-Battleship than a true carrier.

In the games, the Devastation takes the spot for your "lance-heavy" Cruiser while also bringing launch bays for squadrons, which if you aren't aware, Doomfire Bombers can penetrate armour with their attacks too, complimenting your lances as long as you can get another carrier to deploy interceptors or otherwise find a way of guaranteeing their safety to their target.

Without the benefit of reload orders affecting your lances, keep this ship in lock-on orders to give its macros greater range so it can engage with its full compliment at 13,500 points.
It is armed overall, with 1 Triple Barrel Light Macro Turret, 2 Launch Bays carrying a complement of Swiftdeath Fighters, Doomfire Bombers, Dreadclaw Assault Pods or more rarely, Kharybdis Assault Claws, 2 Double-Barrel Heavy Lance Battery Weapons and 1 Triple Barrel Missile Turret.
A ship with a very bad rep and considered a sign of very bad luck for loyalists.

Designed as support ships, the Carnage-class' role was to provide fire support for other ships with its long-ranged guns. The Carnage class was ill-fated from the start. First, much division was caused within Battlefleet Obscurus by the myriad technical problems with its weaponry, such as the difficulty of providing power to its weapons.

What's more, the very first Carnage class cruiser, the Relentless, would earn the new name Initiate of Skalathrax after turning traitor during the Skalathrax Landing and destroying half of the convoy it was guarding. Due to this cursed reputation, the ship made it an object of contention within the Imperial Navy.

An ordinance-boat, the Carnage was armed with mid and long-ranged Macro Weapons Battery broadsides, and carried another Macro battery on the prow.
Slaughter
The Lamborghini of Chaos Cruisers.

The fastest Cruiser-class available to Chaos forces, the Slaughter-class gets its speed from the Scartix Coil, an experimental drive system. When one of the ships went Traitor, the engine designs were destroyed, leaving the Imperium unable to replicate it. Even though the idea they didn’t have copies of the data used to make it, even if not the schematics, is honestly impossible to believe. Especially the Mechanicus, who is utterly obsessed with recovering and guarding technological knowledge and has been suffering losses of knowledge for millennia. Yet, we’re to believe the Imperium wouldn’t be paranoid about losing data.

The Slaughter is armed with short-ranged Lance and Macro cannon broadsides, and a Macro weapons battery mounted on the prow. Configured as a close-ranged brawler, the Slaughter takes advantage of its high speeds to close into its foes, unload its guns, then quickly escape any return fire.

It is unknown if the Dark Mechanicus could still replicate and create more of these Scartix Coils, however.

It is armed overall, with 1 Triple Barrel Light Macro Turret, 4 Merged Macro Battery Weapons and 1 Triple Barrel Missile Turret.
Inferno
The Inferno Class Cruiser is a class of Cruiser used by the Forces of Chaos.

It is a troubled ship like most Great Crusade-era ships.

Believed to be an early design and a later counterpart of the Carnage-Class, it was marred by technical difficulties including maintaining and powering its long-range weaponry. As a result, the class was quickly supplanted by more modern designs in the Imperial Navy.

A small number of these crafts turned renegade before they were removed from service in M35, and have since joined Chaos-affiliated fleets. Chaos probably got around the technical issues with Space Bullshit.

*Length: 5km
*Mass: 23.2 megatonnes; approx
*Crew: 48,600 crew; approx

In Battlefleet Gothic
Cruisers are the backbone of any player's fleet. Modestly-priced points-wise, there's enough variety among the ships available to Chaos to fill any fleet role. In general, Chaos Cruisers are much faster than their Imperial counterparts and, barring the Slaughter-class, have longer weapon ranges.

As with all things related to Chaos, Cruisers may be commanded by Chaos Lords, which grants access to Marks of Chaos. In turn, they can also be crewed by Chaos Space Marines for additional cost (which then allows access to Chaos Terminators).

A fleet can include up to a dozen cruisers as part of its list.

In Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 1 & 2
As a bit of a counter to Imperial vessels, Chaos Cruisers are much faster, and lean more toward longer-ranged attacks. Their Boarding capabilities are... decent, as far as Chaos goes, but don't write home about it.

That little detail aside, much like in the tabletop game, Cruisers are cheap and are used to mostly fill out your fleet list.

Since it’s name is “Murder” and it was named such after being replaced, these ships are definitely yandere.

It is armed overall, with 1 Double-Barrel Heavy Lance Artillery and 4 Macro Battery Weapons.

The Heavy Cruiser is a warship type originally used by the Imperium of Man, but now is primarily seen in the service of the Great Enemy. As an early attempt to create a cheaper and easier-to-maintain class of ships that could replace the Grand Cruisers, Heavy Cruisers try to capture the firepower of a Battleship on the smaller but swifter frame of the Cruiser.

Heavy Cruisers fell out of favor with Navy commanders due to the costs involved in maintaining their advanced systems. Their roles in fleets were soon filled by Battlecruisers, which were much economical to construct and easier to maintain due to using simpler technology.

Chaos has no such bias, and over the millennia ships of this type have made their way into Traitor fleets.

Interestingly, heavy cruisers (other than the Acheron) were not inherently flawed designs who mass-defected to Chaos. The Imperium merely stopped using them, so the only ones left in active duty are those that had turned to Chaos or been built by Chaos shipyards. GW only knows what idiot decided a set of very fast ships overflowing with macrobatteries or lances or attack craft was not worth maintaining. Especially since Chaos is infamously terrible at maintaining advanced technology, which means maintaining the ships’ systems was likely not difficult or could have been replaced in ships under construction with simpler, less advanced technologies.

Heavy Cruiser Classes
Basic
The Hecate-Class Heavy Cruiser is the average joe of Heavy Cruisers.

Developed in late M33 as a replacement for the Styx Class Heavy Cruiser, it was seen as more well-rounded for fleet engagements and solitary patrols. The ships were being built at Cypra Mundi when newer designs from Mars were deemed more suitable for the Imperial Navy. Most were decommissioned by the Imperium in late M35.

By M36, a number of vessels had turned renegade, leading many to fear some inherent design flaw made these ships susceptible to corruption within the Warp. As a response, the Imperial Navy was quick to decommission whatever of the Cruisers remained. Since then, the class is frequently seen in the armadas of Chaos Space Marine fleets and in particular the Black Crusades of Abaddon the Despoiler.

The Hecate finally appeared in BF:A2 when it was released with the Chaos Campaign expansion, the Hecate drops two of the launch bays carried by the Styx to provide a more front line combat carrier type of vessel, with a much better DPS/CPM profile and a nice chunk of savings on points. The Hecate seems to be an alternative carrier for when you want to bring squads but still need the raw firepower to deal with any unexpected surprises that could end up running your squads dry or proving them to be ineffective, even in large numbers (ie: Necrons and their aoe fighter killing ability).

The Hecate’s weapons and defenses would be good for tearing up a normal cruiser’s shields and breaking its defense turrets. Then some fighters and a lot of bombers could pretty easily wreck havoc on an opponent with fighters distracting and engaging remaining turrets while bombers deal damage. Or use the attack craft before/during the engagement to weaken a target’s offensive capabilities to make them easier prey for the Hecate. Against an opposing attack craft heavy fleet, mixed carriers would probably be better suited using their fighters defensively and their bombers for targets of opportunity already suffering significant damage.

Which of course makes no sense as the Mars carries far fewer attack craft and is generally considered a failed design. A versatile design, many Chaos Lords appreciate its ability to provide Fighter and Bomber support on top of its long-ranged weapons.

The Styx features a pair of Launch Bays, with a long-ranged Weapons Battery and long-ranged dorsal Lance battery. The long-ranged guns means that the ship can keep relatively out of danger while still being able to contribute the firepower of its weapons.

More importantly (since the attack craft are the real power of this ship), it can blast the crap out of enemy escorts/raiders that try and make torpedo runs against it long before they get in range without having to re-direct its attack craft to protect itself while also being able to contribute a notable amount of firepower to assist friendly ships engaged with whatever.
The Ordinance-boat of the Heavy Cruisers, the Hades-class is equipped to engage opponents at not-quite brawling range. While it doesn't have the shields or armor to take a sustained firefight with larger ships, it's still more than a match of any Imperial Cruiser.

The Hades is the mirror of the Acheron, weapons-wise, with mid-ranged Macro Weapons Battery broadsides (despite its lowish shields and armor or its size and so should be long-ranged all around) supplemented by a long-ranged forward-mounted Lance battery, and dorsal-mounted long-ranged Lance turrets.
In battlefleets, the Hades shines even brighter when leading a group of other long-ranged ships like the Murder- and Carnage-class cruisers, letting them combine their long-range guns into a solid wall of death awaiting any captain dumb enough to try to close the gap.
The Acheron-Class Heavy Cruiser is a Chaos starship that was built on the Cardinal-class heavy cruiser hull which, interestingly, is the only keel-built Imperial ship still operating that fans know of.

A testbed for experimental and possibly xenos-based technologies, only one was thought to have been built. Said ship suddenly defected to the side of Abaddon's forces during the Gothic War. Multiple ships of the same type were spotted since that time, which means that there's a Dark Mechanicus Forge World somewhere churning them out.
A dedicated Lance-boat, the Acheron-class features long-ranged Lance broadsides, a mid-ranged dorsal Lance battery, and a mid-ranged forward-mounted Weapons battery. ==== Hellfire ====

The Hellfire-Class Heavy Cruiser is a class of Heavy Cruiser that was originally an early attempt by the Adeptus Mechanicus to mount large Weapons Batteries onto a Cruiser-class hull. Initially only fitted with relatively weak Lances, after several years of tinkering with the ship's power generators the Mechanicum was able to add further-ranged and more powerful lance batteries. Thus the ships became formidable and were used in planetary sieges and system blockades.

That being said the ships still suffered from multiple issues. Their huge arsenal greatly reduced their speed, something which proved a constant hindrance for smaller and more manoeuvrable ships it fought alongside. Their lack of Void Shield generators (due to most of the ship's power going to its weaponry) also made them easy targets for enemy fire. Additionally, due to the large space required to fit its ammunition and power generators, crew quarters were cramped and under-supplied. All of these weaknesses made the Hellfire ill-suited for long-range patrols unless supported by a flotilla of transports and escorts.

Due to the undesirable conditions on board, crew morale tended to suffer during long periods at dock or patrol. In such cramped and crowded conditions, the murmurings of discontent started to spread and many of these vessels and their crews eventually mutinied, leading them down the road to Chaos. Today, most Hellfires remain in the fleets of Chaos.

A shame the AdMech was too pants-on-head retarded to just make the weapons batteries smaller but the guns inside the same as those on a larger class of ship. Imperial weapons batteries have fifty weapons each. Make it like, twenty guns from a battleship. There, problem solved. Put battleship engines in your cruiser while you’re at it and use the increased power to power increased void shield strength and layers as well as much thicker armor. Say, battleship level of both. You’re welcome.

*Acceleration: 3.8 gravities max sustainable acceleration; approx

In Battlefleet Gothic
Heavy Cruisers are a good source of firepower if Battleships or Grand Cruisers are unavailable for some reason (like lack of models). Barring the Styx, they're somewhat cheap points-wise, but always keep in mind that they're not any tougher than a regular Cruiser.

A Heavy Cruiser may be taken for every two Cruisers in a list. Like any other ship on the Chaos list, any one commanded by a Chaos Lord may select a Mark of Chaos, and gets the option of adding Chaos Space Marine crew for additional cost.

In Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 1 & 2
A slight upgrade over regular Cruisers, Heavy Cruisers feature better weaponry in exchange for a more limited selection of vessels. They're a smidgen more costly than a regular Cruiser as well, so they can't round off points as efficiently.

The roles of the three Heavy Cruisers available are clearly delineated, so it really falls under a player's preference how the ships fill their fleet list.

Grand Cruisers are a type of warship that carry the firepower of a Battleship on the smaller but much swifter frame of a Cruiser. Due to the complex systems needed to build such craft, the Imperium no longer makes Grand Cruisers, but a few still remain in the Imperial Navy's service in Reserve fleets.

Many Grand Cruisers had gone over to the service of Chaos over the millennia due to one reason or another. Due to their combination of raw firepower and speed, these ships are favored by many Renegade commanders.

Grand Cruiser Classes
Basic
Repulsive
The prototypical Grand Cruiser: the firepower of a Battleship carried on the hull of a Cruiser. Though its defences are nowhere near those of Battleships, the Repulsive's firepower is nothing short of phenomenal.

Originally known as the Corinus-class, these ships entered Chaos use when the Death Guard captured several and returned with them to the Eye of Terror. When corrupted variants appeared afterwards, Imperial scholars reclassified the class as the Repulsive instead.

The Repulsive is armed with 6 front-mounted Torpedo launchers and 4 short-ranged Double-Barrel Light Lance turrets, as well as 4 mid-range broadside Mega Heavy Macro Battery Weapons. Coupled with its heavy armor and shields, this means that the Repulsive is more than capable of surviving close-ranged firefights and meting out pain in return.

*Length: 7.4km
*Mass: 39 megatons; approx
*Crew: 134,000 crew; approx
*Acceleration: 2.4 gravities max sustainable acceleration

Hellfire
Not to be confused with the similarly named Hellfire-class Heavy Cruiser.

A mixed-weapon Grand Cruiser. The Hellfire is a relatively new addition to the Fleets of Chaos. It also looks quite different, at least in terms of the prow.

As such, it is also one of the largest of the new ships added in the Chaos Campaign expansion for BFG Armada II. Coming in on the cheaper side of things points wise, the Hellfire packs a wealthy amount of DPS and CPM in its mixed lance/macro armament, along with a couple of powerful turrets for frontal wide arc protection. It definitely seems worth considering the Hellfire as a go-to choice for affordable, durable damage-dealing at range.

The Hellfire is armed with a wide variety of weapons including: 1 Triple Barrel Heavy Macro Turret, 1 Double-Barrel Lance Turret, 4 Double-Barrel Lance Battery Weapons and 4 Macro Battery Weapons.

*Length: 7.4km
*Mass: 37 megatons; approx
*Crew: 130,000 crew; approx
*Acceleration: 2.4 gravities max sustainable acceleration

Carrier
Retaliator
A Carrier-type, the class had been in service of Chaos since at least M35, when an entire squadron of ships mutinied. The Retaliator carries four Launch Bays carrying a complement of Swiftdeath Fighters, Doomfire Bombers, Dreadclaw Assault Pods or more rarely, Kharybdis Assault Claws, plus 4 mixed Macro and Lance/Merged Macro Battery broadside guns.

The design intention is pretty clear as it lacks firepower. Against large ships, use fighters and bombers to cripple enemy firepower and communications and engines while pounding at their shields. Then either kill it over a long period of time or ignore the de-fanged foe. Against smaller ships, basically the same but with the firepower to quickly kill them while the attack craft does other things instead of engaging those ships. In fact, even against large craft whether or not to leave it to the fighters and bombers or pound at the shields probably depends on what support your own ship has to attack them with.

While in-universe lore describes the Retaliator as a "Master of None" type of ship (versatile, but doesn't excel at all at any one role), the Battlefleet Gothic: Armada games decide to give the class short-ranged mixed broadsides instead. This not only limits its damage output, but also puts it in an odd spot of being a Carrier that has to close in to even use its guns.

*Length: 7.4km
*Mass: 36.7 megatons; approx
*Crew: 114,000 crew, 20,000 pilots and support personnel; approx
*Acceleration: 2.4 gravities max sustainable acceleration

Lance-Boat
Executor
The dedicated Lance-boat of the Grand Cruisers, the firepower that the Executor could put out was much appreciated by Imperial Navy commanders. The last squadrons of this class vanished pursuing raiders close to the Cadian Gate, only to reappear under Renegade control some five hundred years later.

The Executor comes with a mix of short-ranged and mid-ranged Lance broadside batteries as standard. Thanks to the sheer power of lances, this isn’t the problem it sounds like (needing to get close to use all lances) but instead means the ship can target a good number of attack escorts whose shields have been stripped, while also providing good lance coverage against enemy cruisers at the same time.

In the Battlefleet Gothic: Armada games, this gives the class incredible accuracy, in return for having a relatively narrow firing arc.

Overall, total weapons include 4 Double-Barrel Lance Battery Weapons and 4 Double Barrel Light Lance Battery Weapons.

*Length: 7.4km
*Mass: 35 megatons; approx
*Crew: 120,400 crew; approx
*Acceleration: 2.4 gravities max sustainable acceleration

In Battlefleet Gothic
Chaos Grand Cruisers fill the need of a quick platform capable of putting out the firepower and having almost the durability of a Battleship. These are also much cheaper points-wise, and can be used to anchor a Chaos list if there aren't a lot of points to spare.

A Grand Cruiser may be taken for every two Heavy or regular Cruisers in a fleet list. If commanded by a Chaos Lord, a player may select any of the four Marks of Chaos available.

In Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 1 & 2
Like their Imperial counterparts, Chaos Grand Cuisers provide a cheaper alternative to Battleship in fleet composition. That said, barring the Repulsive, the relatively short ranges of the other classes leave some players scratching their heads, as they go against the trend of long-ranged firepower for Chaos warships.
The Imperial Navy's spikier and crazier opposite number, Chaos Fleets is a catch-all term for ships that over the millennia went renegade and now swear loyalty to the Ruinous Powers. Most of these make their home in large Warp Rifts like the Eye of Terror or the Maelstrom, but many also haunt the lawless frontiers of many subsectors as pirates.

While most are disorganized rabble, there are also those who retained some sort of discipline and coordination, with the fleets of the Traitor Legions foremost among these. A single Renegade ship will be a terror to the tradeways of a system, but a Traitor Legion fleet can bring entire planets to heel (see the Word Bearers and their invasion of the White Consuls protectorate world of Sabatine). Ironically, if they scattered and focused on plaguing (no pun intended) countless systems’ trade it would actually be far more strategically effective than concentrated fleets by pretty easily crippling Imperial logistics in perhaps an entire segmentum. Leaving it ripe for small, concentrated fleets of gun-focused ships and battleships to spear through the sectors within. Especially if the logistical attacks were performed primarily by the carrier type vessels such as the Devastation-class. As the spearhead fleets punch through the supply-starved Imperial fleets, these harassers could then fold into them at places of significant resistance or sally forth to prepare new territories for slaughter.

Often these renegades assemble under the banner of a powerful Warlord (like Huron Blackheart and his Red Corsairs), but rarely the Warmaster of Chaos himself, Abaddon the Despoiler, will rally a massive fleet to his command. When this armada finally sallies forth from the Eye, entire sectors burn, their populations becoming sacrifices to the Dark Gods.

Interestingly, Chaos ships are usually made for kiting the enemy from long range. This can be seen either as the cowardice common to bullies or as an impersonal, clinical approach to war, though Chaos forces are usually anything but impersonal in a fight...

It is also worth noting that most Chaos ships were not always discontinued by the Imperium due to a habit of turning renegade (some classes suffered this, but not all). Some of them were simply phased out and replaced by ships that honestly don't even fill the same role as the vessels they replaced, defeating the entire concept of phasing out old designs for new ones. Not so inferior, too, seeing as Black Crusades kick a lot of ass with those supposedly "outdated" warships.

The general explanation for phasing out older ships is that their older tech is harder to maintain to the standards of the Imperial Navy, and that they no longer fit current fleet doctrine. Consider though: the forces of Chaos manage to maintain them adequately, and while they're nowhere near as reliant on hand-me-downs from the Imperium as some may say, they've still got nowhere near the resources or logistics. The only place the old ships Chaos use might not fit in modern Imperial doctrine is long-range weapons batteries. Imperial ships get close to the enemy so the chances of friendly fire would be very high. Lances don't have that problem. Neither do swarms of attack craft. And these ships could just use their speed to fire on enemies from anywhere except right behind friendlies (or just use some basic co-ordination and teamwork).

You will likely notice and be annoyed by the fact Chaos ships are built in logical ways that make sense, such as combining long-ranged firepower with hangars for fleet support ships instead of close-range weapons with hangars, among other commonsense approaches. If you're an Imperial fan, you will hate this because Imperial ships often don't make as much sense. If you're a Chaos fan you'll hate this because your ships make too much sense.

The Claws of the Dark Gods
Compared to the ships of the Imperial Navy which have a common Gothic design theme to them, the ships of Chaos are an eclectic sort, made up of a hodgepodge of classes and sizes. Bigger ships have a tendency to have a wider and sleeker profile to them (those that haven't been mutated extensively, that is), with older ships lacking the armored prow so common for Imperial ships.

Another thing common to Chaos ships is how much faster they are compared to Loyalist ships, with even Battleships being able to outpace their opposite numbers easily. This makes sense as your average Renegade ship is as much a raider as it is a ship of line, and speed is always a consideration if one wants to get away with plunder before the Navy arrives to investigate. How much of this is left over from either powerful ancient tech or is the result of modifications to suit a raider lifestyle isn’t known. What is known is that only a moron would replace a fast, long-ranged ship with a slow, short-ranged ship. Or even the concept of a slow ship that has to get close to its enemy to be useful. So, either current Imperial classes and Chaos ships were the same in terms of speed and skub resulted in the current speed differences, or there are a lot of people who need bolt shells deposited in their skulls.

More importantly, they are usually long-range vessels and take advantage of the speed boost from not having an armored prow by mounting a plethora of short-range missiles and sometimes torpedoes (more rarely than Imperials, though). This lets Chaos ship classes and their loyalist counterparts either kite heavy ships and use short-range firepower to quickly overwhelm torpedo boats that get too close (or finish off charging heavy ships) or charge at the enemy and rely on massive short-ranged prow-mounted weapons to interfere with enemy incoming fire (due to the distances in space combat) or enemy torpedoes (one of the biggest threats in 40k naval warfare) and literally shoot through enemy escorts. Armored prows counter this in their own way, resulting in Chaos and Imperial ships being roughly equal through different, conflicting methods.

Due to being relatively less armored compared to Imperial vessels, Chaos vessels focus on being able to destroy things from extreme range using laser/lances weapons, missile macrolaunchers & launch bays to send Attack Craft (either possessed by daemons or manually controlled by servants or slaves) to strike their enemies. That way the traitors can do raiding strikes easily & pillage planets & ships without much effort, and then fuck off when the enemy reinforcements come; when it's time for a massive attack against Chaos enemies, they will deal enormous damage to the enemy before they reach at attack distance of the Chaos fleet.... which could just try to still keep their distance, or just fuck off to the Eye of Terror with not much damage. In this way, Chaos fleets have been the bane of the Imperium commerce and void control for millennia. Heretic Astartes ships are a different matter entirely, of course, as these still have enough armor to duke it out in a close-ranged brawl.

Add to this mix the variety that Marks of Chaos bring, and this means that one fleet can be very different from the next despite having the same numbers and classes of ships. Because of course a Cruiser dedicated to Khorne will act very differently compared to one worshipping Slaanesh. And this isn't even getting into actual Daemon-possessed ships...

The main ships are battleships, cruisers, escorts, and fighters .Each ship can also be classified by its weaponry, and role in the battlefleet:
*Basic: Jack of All Trades ships, due to having multiples weapons types, and not being specialized into any. Lunar class cruisers are the prime example, having macrobateries, lances & torpedoes. Where Imperial basic ships tend to take a half-and-half approach, Chaos basics tend towards a heavier leaning on weapons batteries or lances, like two-thirds of one and one-third of the other (not literally, just to give the general idea).
*Lance-boats: Ships that focuses into Lance weaponry, used for long-range focused attacks, especially against small ships & unshielded ones. Rarer as they have a weakness to Void Shields and require better drives due to the power requirements of the lances.
*Ordnance-boat: Opposite of the Lance-boat, replaces Lances with more Macrobatteries, focusing mostly into medium & short range brawls against enemy ships. Usually this is because they need extra power due to mounting a Nova Cannon or having power-hungry macrobatteries such as Plasma Cannons.
*Carrier: A favored one on the Traitors & Chaos fleets, which are focused on raiding & striking fast and from a distance, and so this class of ships is more common in said fleets than on the Imperial Navy. Ironically well-suited for protecting a torpedo spam that Chaos doesn’t use, but also countering the same that the Imperium does emphasize.

Battleship
Desolator

A design predating the Heresy, and by being designed to emphasize range and carries Torpedos, Broadside Lances and Dorsal Macrobatteries the Desolator emphasizes killing things at extreme range, and it does that really well. It comes with front-facing Torpedo Launchers, Lance broadside batteries, and macrocannons up the wazoo.

** Desecrator: The carrier variant of the Desolator. Replaces half the Broadside Lances with Landing Bays. Shared the same fate as its sister class and is now only seen in Chaos fleets. Traitorous despite its clearly pious and Emperor-loving name.

Despoiler

A Carrier based around a design found on Barbarus, the homeworld of the Death Guard Primarch Mortarion. Flaws in its Geller Field led to many going renegade through the millennia (as if the name wasn't a clue). Possibly even more dangerous at long range than the Desolator, the Despoiler supplements its already impressive Lance and macrocannon batteries with several Launch Bays worth of fighters and bombers.

** Despite being a new class, GW fucked up their fluff and had Rogal Dorn disappear aboard a Despoiler, 5000 years before the class was created. Note this class was actually already named "Despoiler-class" by the Imperium. Yet, they were surprised the things went traitor. Wow. Also, after fixing the Gellar Field problem, the Imperium still decided not to build more, which was stupid since there was no longer a reason not to. I get not wanting to chance it, but beggars can't be choosers.

Gloriana

A massive and rare class of Battleship, the Gloriana was created to be flagships of Primarchs. When half of them joined Horus Lupercal's forces, they took their flagships with them, and when Horus lost his fateful duel with the Emperor, these followed their commanders into their escape to the Eye of Terror.

Many are still around, and each is easily the match of an entire Imperial fleet. The most infamous of them all, the Vengeful Spirit, is the de-facto flagship of Abaddon the Despoiler.

Grand Cruiser
Repulsive

Originally called the Corinus-class, many went over to the Despoilers cause when the experimental drives it used interfered with its Geller field. Whoops. Suddenly, the Mechanicus spending centuries testing every little thing before producing that thing makes a lot of sense, and still isn’t always enough. Though this sounds like a problem they should have easily found when testing. The class itself is armed with both Torpedoes and Macrocannons, which oddly enough gives it a (relatively) shorter range than other Chaos ships.

Vengeance

An old design from which current-day Battlecruisers and Cruisers are descended from. Though still used by the Imperium, many had gone over to Chaos' cause over the centuries. Due to its suite of Lances and long-ranged macro batteries, it fits with the preferred M.O. of Chaos disturbingly well.

Retaliator

The Carrier of the Chaos Grand Cruisers, it carries a mix of Macros, Lances, and Launch Bays. Because of experiencing the same drive issues as the Repulsive, many went renegade.

Executor

The Lance-boat of the Grand Cruisers, the Executor class swapped out its broadside Macros for more Lance batteries. The last of these left Imperial control when its fleet pursued raiders back into the Eye of Terror.

Heavy Cruiser
Hecate

Basic heavy cruiser. Jack-of-all-Trades with a gun deck on either side and launch bay on either side plus some dorsal macro turrets and a dorsal lance battery. A pretty common sense design. It was intended to replace the Styx but this was stupid as it carries half the attack craft.

Styx

Despite being armed with a mix of long-ranged Macros and Lances, the Styx is actually the Carrier of its class, armed with SIX Launch Bays. SIX squads of bombers or Dreadclaw Assault Boats = a whole lot of pain. The Imperial Navy no longer uses this class, and had replaced it with the Mars instead.

Hades

Armed with a mix of Lances and Macrocannons, the Hades is comfortable at both extreme and medium ranges. The closest thing to a Brawler for Chaos cruisers. Its a Murder Class with extra 60cm strength 2 Dorsal Lances, simple but practical.

Acheron

The Lance-boat of the Heavy Cruisers, barring the front-mounted macro turrets and missile launchers Was initially a testbed for mixed-Lance/Macro batteries, the prototype promptly went Traitor. Underpowered because its broadside Lance batteries are only Strength 2, which the common Devastation cruiser also has but that also has Launch Bays.

Cruiser
Devastation

The Lance boat of the Chaos cruisers, the Devastation supplements this long-ranged firepower with a pair of Launch Bays to for fighter and bomber support. It's also armed with medium-ranged macro batteries in front, in case battles come a little closer in than usual. Chaos lords love these things, as they use those Launch Bays to sortie assault boats full of mutant fodder.

Murder

A mixed-weapons class, the Murder has front-mounted Lance battery and medium-ranged macro broadside batteries. Historically this class preceded the Lunar-class, but Imperials have since stopped using it even in Reserve fleets.

Carnage

The long-ranged ordinance-boat of the Chaos Cruisers, the Carnage features plasma macro batteries on its front, top, and broadsides. The Imperial Navy intended the class to be plasma-heavy fleet support ships, but the tendency of crews to go Renegade made them abandon its plans.

Slaughter

A high-speed Cruiser, thanks to its Scartix Engine Coil drive, it has the highest speed of any cruiser, period. The Slaughter bucks the usual Chaos S.O.P. by having medium-ranged macro batteries for its front and broadsides. This means that it can get in close, hit its enemies hard, then get out before they retaliate in kind. The Imperium doesn't build the Class anymore, as the designs for the drive were destroyed when one eventually went Traitor.

Light Cruiser
Hellbringer

The equivalent of the Dauntless class of Imperial Navy Light Cruisers, the Hellbringer comes in two types. The first one comes with a pair of Launch Bays, while the second replaces those for Lance batteries. Both come with long-ranged heavy macro turrets as standard.

Raiders
Idolator

A mixed-armed Raider, the Idolator features a prow-mounted Lance battery and a Macro launcher. One of the best Escorts in the game and a complete upgrade over the Imperial-Firestorm class for only 5 points more. The multi-directional macro cannons can fire 45CM and dont take a penalty for distance, while moving 30cm a turn. a Bargain for its effectiveness.

Infidel

A design supposed to replace the Cobra-class Destroyer, the plans were stolen and co-opted by Chaos. It's armed with Torpedoes and Macro launchers.

Iconoclast

Known for the unusual placement of its bridge (right in front), the Iconoclast featues firepower 3 Macro launchers. Rogue Traders and Pirates seem to like it, for some reason, even when its generally seen as mediocre at best.

Daemonships
A warship-turned-daemon engine, Daemonships aren't a specific class, but refers to any spaceship that has been taken over by a Greater Daemon of Chaos. It is no longer a "ship" in the conventional sense as a daemonship is a living entity, a machine given flesh and soul. The further it mutates: the less it looks like a ship and the more it resembles a flying colossal daemon: growing things like teeth, eyes, tentacles, and other organic appendages. As it's alive, it technically doesn't need a crew to function, although it may allow mortals to board and ride around in it if the ship feels generous (like with Typhus and his horribly corrupted flagship: the Terminus Est) or if some guy binds it to his service forcibly (easier said than done).

They've been around for millennia, even in the early days of the Imperium: and there has been many an Imperial ghost story, where these lone ships suddenly haunt an area as a malign apparition, before it suddenly translates into realspace for an attack. After its appetite for slaughter had been sated, said phantoms disappear back into the warp, leaving devastation in their wake.

How exactly Daemonships are created isn't fully understood. A leading theory is that the crew willingly offer themselves up to the Dark Gods, and a daemon proceeds to infest their ship and turn it into an abomination of corrupted, living metal. Some info from captured renegade Navigators say that the crew may make certain forbidden pacts that would allow a daemon to infest a space vessel. While some say that daemonships were lost ships that have spent so much time in the Warp unprotected, that daemons eventually found it and took over.

Whatever the case, Daemonships are fearsome and terrifying opponents whenever they appear, and woe betide anyone who has the ill fortune of having to deal with one of these warp-tainted abominations and survive.

In Battlefleet Gothic
Due to the faster-than-usual speeds, long-ranged weapons, and less-reliable armor, Chaos fleets are more suited to a sniper's playstyle. Bombard from afar, then use your superior speed to keep away from your enemies once they try to move in.

Space Marine Chapters that recently went Renegade are the opposite, with ships and armament that are geared for getting up close.

A fleet may have up to three Chaos Lords commanding ships, and each Chaos Lord may select a specific Mark of Chaos. The Mark of Khorne doubles the effectivity of Boarding Actions, while the Mark of Slaanesh hits any enemy warship getting within spitting distance a big Leadership hit. The Mark of Nurgle makes ships tougher and impossible to Board (due to how disgusting such ships are), while finally the Mark of Tzeentch allows a single re-roll.

It's assumed that the crews of the ships are just Renegades, but if a player shells out more points, a vessel may have a Chaos Space Marine crew instead. If taken, one can then get Chaos Terminators. Both increase the effectiveness of Boarding Actions as well as Hit and Run strikes.
