The Lord of Skulls (formerly known as the Lord of Battle, colloquially known as The Rape Train) is a massive Daemon Engine of Khorne. Those tanks on its back store the blood of murderers, which get heated to boiling by the daemon's rage and then vented out through the chest-cannon (with various ranges, strengths, and so on depending on which one you get). Its right arm holds the Great Cleaver of Khorne, a destroyer melee weapon. The left arm is either a gatling cannon or (as pictured here) a skullhurler, a cannon shaped like a skull that shoots a bunch of skulls that gnaw on their targets (forcing successful saves to be re-rolled). Seriously, we couldn't make this up if we tried -- just imagine skulls chomping everyone like Pac-Man.

He started out as an Epic model; when Games Workshop released the new Apocalypse book for 6th Edition, they turned it into a 28mm-scale model (although the new one is more a hybrid with the Death Dealer, since it inherited its humanoid front section and chest-mounted cannon). The modeler actually lost count of how many little skulls he put on the thing. The resulting model looks really, REALLY, stupid, or harkens back to Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader.

Forge World sells a conversion kit for turning this stupid model into a proper walker. Yes, even Forge World, the company notorious for making a transport flyer that can only disembark its passengers by blowing up mid-air, cannot withstand the stupidity of the revamped model. Furthermore, the new model also got some serious contentions among the 40k fanbase. With some praising it for its new modern look while others decrying it by bitching that it looks so damned ridiculous even for 40k Khorne standards that it does a complete 180 and becomes stupid again, making Khorne lose all intimidating and cool factor. And how can you blame those who complain? After all it looks like a giant robo-Khorne Berserker fused itself with a overgrown bulldozer with a notorious dick gun and a unnecessary amount of skulls. The amount of innuendos you can make of this model makes one wonder how no Imperial Guardsman has fallen onto the floor laughing their asses off rather than hightailing the other way round piss-shit scared. Until it got into range.

Let's take a trip back, shall we? Back to the days of Squats and non-Tyranid Genestealers, to a time where the Tau were not even a glint in the eyes of any of GW's dev team, and to the times of Ian Watson's Inquisition War novels.

This is where the tale of Jaq Draco resides. Once an Inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus back when they were focused on being watchdog to the other organizations, Jaq was then caught up in a massive scandal that sought to enslave humanity itself through use of the Illuminati and the Sensei. In an attempt to defy this, Jaq decided that, among other things, he had to go to Terra to pay the Emprah a visit. Because of how the Malleus in this era had vows against going to Terra (and another detail involving unsanctioned Exterminatus), this rendered Draco a renegade and heretic whom the Inquisition at large has disowned. Though whether it is because he was a loose cannon, his exploits being too improbable to be believed, or because he was too much of an embarrassing /d/egenerate (seriously, he goes on and on about how he wants his female companion's coochie WHILE IN GENESTEALER FORM) is up for debate.

Yes, this shit is a wild ride and a half, even considering this is a Squat-era 40k novel, much less the very first one.

Early History
Jaq was originally born on the planet Xerxes Quintus, which had become a hotbed for mutation and psykery since the Age of Strife. His parents were colonists who were tasked with researching the genome when they were murdered. Jaq was then shipped off to a missionary school, which was pretty much the Schola Progenium but before all the fluff about Commissars was fixed. He was eventually discovered to be a psyker on top of being too curious for his own good, so off he went to the Black Ships to become Emprah-chow...or so it would have been if he didn't manage to ingratiate himself to the Inquisitors on board, who took to him and thus kick-started his education as an Inquisitor. Again, his curiosity comes into play and led to him entering the "Inner Order", a secretive organization purposed with keeping watch over the Inquisitors.

The Inquisition War
During one op where Jaq watched over another Inquisitor's genestealer purge, he discovered (through his Emperor's Tarot) the presence of a Harlequin Man - a man dressed like a Harlequin - by the name of Zephro Carnelian. Believing him to be a threat, Jaq and crew began a big cat and mouse chase across the planet which ended with them hijacking the Planetary Governor's pet astropath and declaring exterminatus upon the planet because it inhabited some new strain of warp-monstrosity. Shortly afterward, Jaq uncovers the Ordo Hydra: a ultra-special-secretive cabal of Inquisitors (including Carnelian, the Inquisitor he was keeping an eye on, and his own mentor) who were planning on using this warp-spawned entity to fuse the minds of all mankind into one massive gestalt in order to stamp out the forces of Chaos for good and replace the dying Emperor. Though Jaq gets inducted into the Ordo, he still has serious concerns and thus mounts an expedition to the Eye of Terror to uncover the warp-spawn's origins and then to Terra to warn the Emperor and receive revelations of his own.

Once finished, he shoved everyone into stasis-crates and got shipped off to another world so as to escape any further patrols. They end up on Luxus Prime, which was in the middle of a heretic cult uprising, sans the team Squat (they eventually find him, he was just separated and had himself a helluva time) and lose their Navigator to some latent corruption. After pretty much guaranteeing that the cult was crushed and that the Planetary Governor was punished for his negligence, he helped himself to the Governor's astropath and booked it. He then came across unsettling news that Stalinvast (that planet he exterminatus'd) was now being occupied by Eldar (Harlequins, specifically) with not only Carnelian being assumed active again, but the assassin's superior went rogue and Jaq's own mentor (who was mind-scrubbed some years ago) was going to investigate the case.

Retinue
* Meh'Lindi: A Callidus assassin who, for baffling reasons, was experimented on to only turn into a Genestealer, much to her horror. Being the only woman on this team, it didn't take much for everyone to get funny ideas, including the author himself, to the the point of fixating on her form multiple times, even when she's transforming via polymorphine and cramming herself into ducts. Naturally, Jaq's the only person she slept with, and even then it wasn't all that enjoyable. Was the focus of a short story explaining this procedure and how it came into perfect use in blowing up a Genestealer Cult (this was before Genestealers had a hive-mind and could just sniff her out instantly). We're specifically told that Meh'Lindi even grows an artificial fuck-hole for her genestealer form. Honestly, we were better off not knowing that. Also somehow an expert in operating several forms of Jokaero tech.
* Grimm: A Squat. Later editions of the novels decided to retcon him with a deviant Techpriest named Grill. He was the focus of a short story about his time in the retinue of another Inquisitor whom he helped (alongside some Ogryns and marines) rescue a nascent psyker from a Chaos robot (hey, this was pre-Men of Iron and pre-Necron). He gets some of the best lines, such as "[There are] millions dead, and here I munch," followed by the inquisition's victory being "sugar on the porridge of death." These are real lines, folks.
* Vitali Googol: A Navigator with a fascination for poetry and wine. Got a bit corrupted during their trip to the Eye of Terror, which led to bigger issues including his eventual death.
**Azul Petrov: The replacement Navigator Grimm dug up on Luxus.
*Moma Parsheen: Originally the Astropath of Stalinvast's governor, and a literal crazy cat lady. She "forgot" to cancel the Exterminatus order for Stalinvast to get revenge on the governor, but regrets it after Grimm reminded her that she left behind her cats. Gets blammed by one of the Ordo Hydra inquisitors for messing with his plans.
*Fennix: Astropath to the Planetary Governor of Luxus Prime. He's a rather strange sort of mystic hampered by his hyper-sensitive senses and his monkey-like anatomy.

Callidus (Latin for sneaky or stealthy, although, ironically, "Callidus" is masculine, even though most of the assassins are female) is an Assassin temple of the Officio Assassinorum. They are masters of infiltration and disguise, thanks to a drug called Polymorphine (polymorph-ine, not poly-morphine), which, for some reason, works on women better than on men (hey at least it works for both genders unlike Geneseed). Their training involves learning about other cultures and languages as opposed to just killin' stuff, so they're probably the most socially-capable of the assassins who actually appear on the tabletop. However, that doesn't necessarily make them "normal," since getting "lost in character" is sometimes an issue.

Callidus Temple is the oldest temple from the real-life lore-writin' perspective. The very first assassin in 40k, Meh'Lindi, hailed from Callidus (which back in the Rogue Trader days was a planet rather than a temple Terra; this was fixed by 2nd edition). The idea of Callidus Assassins being sexy ladies in skin-tight leather is a holdover from Meh'Lindi's writer Ian Watson being really big on borderline torture porn.

Second Time was Curiosity
<div class="toccolours mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" style="100%">
Some write-fag Callidus story
<div class="mw-collapsible-content">
The first time, it was a mission - handed down from the highest levels of the Officio Assassinorum, cleared in every instance, and signed and sealed in triplicate. "Pretend to be the Emperor himself. Seduce the farseer named Macha, and then reveal your identity. Kill no-one."

A simple enough task, and work as usual. Easily accomplished. But even a hardened assassin has heart-strings, and somehow, the crying face of the xeno witch managed to give them a slight... tug.

The second time was curiosity. Would it feel as good, if repeated? It was not a mission, there were no orders, but even so, it was accomplished quickly and professionally. A cute pizza delivery boy, that time. And yes, it was the same! That feeling! From then, it moved to become a habit, then closer to an obsession. Watch the target at every turn. Foil her every attempt at escaping from the woven web - and let no-one else get close. Every time, it was a little easier, and every time, it felt... even better! The rush of the hunt, of deception, but without the murder, without the blood and the inevitable extraction - instead, wonderful sex, and the rush of seeing resistance slowly, - or did she imagine it? - slowly, turning into despair... and, perhaps, in the future, acceptance?

She, who had no name to call her own, nothing but an order and a call-sign, had finally found the love of her life.
</div></div>
"You... it's hopeless. How am I ever going to find someone when you keep...?"

(...)

"Don't look at me like that! And answer me! Why do you never speak when you look like yourself?"

(...)

"...well fine. I'll go get myself cleaned up, and you... well, do you want some breakfast before you go?"

The nameless assassin shakes her head - that would be getting too close. Too unprofessional. It's not work, but... even so. It would feel wrong. By the time Macha returns from the shower, the Callidus assassin who shared her bed yet again is long gone. As usual.
</div></div>

On the Tabletop
The Callidus is a great assassin. First of all, she gets the usual stats:

|| Pts || WS || BS || S || T || W || I || A || Ld || Sv

Wargear of the Callidus Temple
Her wargear capitalizes on her role of the assassin that wants to be up close.

*Neural Shredder
**A S:1 AP:2 Flamer Pistol, Neural Shock(4+) . S:1 sure does suck, right? Well, thanks to the Neural Shock rule, it wounds non-vehicles/fortifications on a 4+. Also is a pistol because +1 attack for your Phase Sword, hooray!
*Phase Sword
**S:U AP:2 melee which ignores Invulns if she rolls a 6 to wound. That's right, on 6s to wound in CC, nobody gets a save! In essence, be sure to throw her against all the cheese units running around the game these days with their 2+ invul saves with rerolls (Grey Knights and Daemons, we're looking at you). Does not ignore Feel No Pain.
*Poison Blades
**S:U AP:- Poisoned (3+) and Rending if she bumps into a really tough target like a Nurgle Daemon or a Monstrous Creature.

Special Rules of the Callidus
Standard Assassin Rules
*Fearless
*Fleet
*Infiltrate
*Hit & Run
*Move Through Cover
*Precision Strikes
*Lightning Reflexes
**A model with this special rule has a 4+ invulnerable save. In addition, they do not suffer the penalty to their Initiative for charging enemies through difficult terrain.
*No Escape
**Enemy characters suffer a -2 penalty to their Look Out, Sir tests against any Wounds inflicted by a model with this special rule.
*Independent Operative
** Cannot join or be joined, cannot generate Warlord Traits if made warlord.
Callidus Special
*Polymorphine
**When a Callidus Assassin is deployed using her Infiltrate special rule, she can be set up anywhere on the table that is more than 1" from any enemy unit, whether deployed enemy units can draw a line of sight to her or not. If a Callidus Assassin starts the game in Reserves, she can choose to move on from the enemy board edge when she arrives. In either case, during the first game turn, or during the game turn in which the Callidus Assassin arrives from Reserves, enemy units can only fire Snap Shots when targeting her.
*Reign of Confusion
**If your army includes a Callidus Assassin, you can re-roll the die when attempting to Seize the Initiative. In addition, your opponent suffers a -3 to the first Reserve Roll he makes during the game.

Strategies for Use
In short, she's to melee what the Vindicare is to range; she picks one model and fucks up their day. BADLY. She is the type of assassin meant to get on the nerves of your opponents, scaring them into keeping their powerful warlord units out of the way and then killing them anyway. Put her an inch away from the enemy warlord, then sieze the initiative with that re-roll if you weren't going first already. Then, fire the neural shredder to turn any bodyguards or meat shields into gibbering mush before charging in and challenging (ALWAYS challenge with her; if the enemy accepts they get their ass handed to them; if they refuse they lose their attacks and get their ass handed to them regardless). Roll six attacks that hit on 3+ against most opponents, then punch through their armor (and hopefully their invuln) save with your phase sword. Finally, assuming you haven't swept the enemy squad, pull out using Hit and Run and escape under a rain of snapshotting misses.

In terms of targets she is best served avoiding wasting her talents on things like infantry or vehicles (the latter of which she is virtually useless against anyway), those are best served with the Eversor and Vindicare anyway. Send her against targets that will make best use of her talents such as warlords with stormshields, cover camping TEQ's, assignation duty on some Tyranid synapse creatures, specific characters or models you need dead ASAP, etc. In essence out of the four she functions as the actual assassin of the bunch, instead of a living bomb, sharpshooter or psyker wrecker. She isn't meant to clear the board, simply decide what you specifically want dead, send her in and enjoy the show. Just always be mindful of an exit strategy otherwise she might get gunned down (she isn't quite as durable as the Eversor or Culexus when getting shot at).

8th Edition version
|| Pts/PL || M || WS || BS || S || T || W || A || Ld || Sv
Callidus Assassin: || 80/5 || 7" || 2+ || 2+ || 4 || 4 || 5 || 5 || 9 || 6+/4++

Her abilities have gotten a slight re-tooling, but she's still the assassin you're supposed to send in against that one critical unit.

She still has a 4++ and can infiltrate, but now if she chooses to reveal herself, she can instead deploy D6+3" away from enemy units instead of the usual 9", meaning she's far more likely to make that charge immediately after that she is now allowed to perform. Lastly she has Reign of Confusion: when your enemy tries to use strategems during the first battle round, on a 4+ they cost one extra CP.

Strategies for Use
In 8E, she's not actually much of a killer unit. The other assassins are better for that. She's a lot better as a tactical threat, thanks to her chance to negate enemy CP expenditures. Priority Neutralized, which means she can gain CP for killing a character, much like other assassins, AND she can fall back and still shoot and charge. Her attacks cause mortal wounds or ignore leadership. Hit and run is key, but with that? She can kill a Custodes Captain. She's the bane of Alpha Strike armies that require CP, combined with being great against low-leadership, low-wound units, and ESPECIALLY units that rely on high toughness or armor saves. Her Phase sword has crazy AP, while her Poison Blade always wounds on a 3+. You have to know your opponent, but she can be killy if used well. Learn how to kite with her, and she can do great. Just be careful, she is VERY weak against mortal wounds. (Or high volume attacks, don't let her get mobbed).

Second Time was Curiosity
<div class="toccolours mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" style="100%">
Some write-fag Callidus story
<div class="mw-collapsible-content">

Typical Behavior of said Callidus
<div class="toccolours mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" style="100%">
Some dumb shit to fap to. This is why people don't like you neckbeards.
<div class="mw-collapsible-content">
"Mfh... ...e..h? Oh, morning already... wait. What's that rubbing against my... oh. You again."

(hard breathing)

"Look, I wish you'd sto--- ah! No! N-not there!"

(more muffled sounds, accompanied by something that might be described as a repeated... "schlick" of a sound.)

"...aaaAAh, j-just... no, I'm..."

(The sounds and the frequently interrupted protests, continue for a time, growing more fervent and more subdued, respectively, until they cease, with a creaking of the bed marking a climax of sorts.)

"You... it's hopeless. How am I ever going to find someone when you keep...?"
