Sisters of Battle are essentially Warhammer 40k's female equivalent of Space Marines, warriors devoted to the Emperor. Although they lack the genetic modification of their beefier brethren, they also wear power armour and are armed mainly with the ubiquitous Bolter and Chainsword. The Sisters of Battle are also known as the "Daughters of the Emperor", and officially as the "Adepta Sororitas", though the Adepta Sororitas refers to their entire organization, while the term Sisters of Battle refers only to their militant branch. They are more colloquially known by players as "bolter bitches/babes" or "nuns with guns", almost always resulting in an awkward boner. They are not to be confused with Female Space Marines.

Overview
The Sisters of Battle are part of the Ecclesiarchy, the religious arm of Imperial government, and sometimes work with the Inquisition's Witch Hunters. In the 36th millennium, the Ecclesiarchy's pope, a guy called Goge Vandire, attained the dual position of Ecclesiarch and Master of the Administratum, effectively giving him control over everyone in the Imperium, including nearly all of it's armed forces. With the exception of the Space Marines and Adeptus Mechanicus, pretty much everyone had to do what he said or face a slow and agonizing death. Unfortunately for everyone who wasn't lucky enough to be a Space Marine or Tech-Priest, he was also completely insane, and his rule was so devastating that it came to be known as the Reign of Blood, leading to untold billions of deaths across the Imperium, which in turn led to violent warp storms the likes of which wouldn't be seen again until the formation of the Great Rift 5,000 years later. During this period, Vandire discovered a force of warrior-nuns living on the feudal world of San Leor known as the Daughters of the Emperor. Although they initially didn't want anything to do with him, he convinced them that he was the Emperor's chosen by having his bodyguard shoot him while he was protected by the force field of a rosarius. Because the relatively primitive Daughters of the Emperor had never seen a force field before, they assumed that this meant Vandire was protected by the Emperor, and happily joined him. Rechristened as the Brides of the Emperor, they served as Vandire's personal bodyguards, shock troops, servants, and concubines. With a force of hyper-loyal Battle Sisters at his command, Vandire became effectively untouchable, proven when he had the Sisters execute all of the High Lords of Terra, which he quickly replaced with his cronies. Suffice to say, things looked pretty bleak.

Of course, this state of affairs couldn't last forever. Late in his reign, a preacher known as Sebastian Thor rose to prominence in the Imperium, leading a massive crusade to Terra to take down Vandire once and for all. Agreeing that they too were sick of the High Lord, the Space Marines and Adeptus Mechanicus joined forces and launched an assault on Terra, matching themselves against Frateris Templars, Sisters of Battle, and those Imperial Guard and Navy forces that hadn't joined the insurrection. Unfortunately for them, the Sisters numbered around 10,000 women by this point, and they were battle-hardened, motivated, and armed to the teeth. The siege dragged on interminably, with no end in sight. Getting desperate, the Space Marines contacted the Adeptus Custodes, who had remained neutral for most of the siege, but agreed to help the insurrectionists out. Using secret passages to avoid the fighting, the Captain-General of the Custodes presented himself to Alicia Dominica, the leader of the Brides of the Emperor. After debating with her for some time, the Captain-General realized that she wasn't going to budge, and resorted to an extreme course of action; he took her and her five closest compatriots to the Imperial Palace and into the throneroom of the Emperor himself. No one knows what happened in there, but when the six women re-emerged, they went straight to Vandire, declared him a heretic of the highest degree, and beheaded him.

In the aftermath of this conflict, the Imperium underwent a substantial political restructuring known as the Reformation, designed to prevent another Reign of Blood from ever occurring. As part of this restructuring, the High Lords decreed that the Ecclesiarchy was no longer allowed to maintain "men under arms." Of course, while this meant the Ecclesiarchy had to disband their fleet and standing armies of Frateris Templars, the Sisters of Battle were technically allowed to remain, being women under arms and not men. While many point to this as an example of the idiocy of the High Lords of Terra, this easily-circumventable wording was likely intentional, as unlike the other Ministorum forces, the Sisters of Battle had proven that their loyalty was to the Emperor first and the Ecclesiarchy second, meaning that they could be relied upon to police the Ministorum as well as protect it.

In combat, Sisters of Battle have something of an obsession with the purifying effects of flame, and generally choose equipment that allows them to cover heretics with as much holy promethium and thermal lances as possible. This philosophy is most obviously exemplified by the Immolator tank, essentially a rolling steel crate with giant flamethrowers or multi-meltas stuck on it. They also have the Exorcist, a mobile pipe organ that shoots missiles. Less accurate than the Whirlwind Missile Launcher or any Imperial Guard artillery, but who cares, the thought of organs launching missiles while playing epic mass complete with Latin is fucking awesome, dammit.

There are six main Orders. All minor Orders are descended from one of these.

* Argent Shroud: The Lawful Goods. Are a rarity among Imperial factions, in that they are described as being famous for selfless heroism, as well as altruism. For this reason, /tg/ likes to fluff them as noble space Paladins and she-bros to the Salamanders. They wear Silver.
* Bloody Rose: Aggressive as fuck. Aim to kill off their enemies as quickly as possible, as they see no reason to let the heretic live any longer than necessary. They wear Red.
* Ebon Chalice: The vanilla Order. These Sisters haven't changed a whole lot since they were first created, preferring to stick to their tried and tested methods. They wear Black.
* Our Martyred Lady: The postergirl Order, depicted in most mainstream portrayals of the Sisters. This has led to many people thinking that all Sisters have white hair, when it is in fact seemingly only this Order that does it. The Order itself is reputed as being determined even for SoBs, which is saying something. Will not stop until their enemies are utterly destroyed. They wear Black and Red.
* Sacred Rose: Cool, calm and collected. The most tactical Sisters. Enjoy gunning their foes down in a more disciplined manner. If they were to get their own rules, their Rets would have slow and purposeful. They wear White.
* Valorous Heart: Repent! These Sisters feel the guiltiest about that whole Age of Apostasy thing, and as a result have an excess of Repentias. Likely on constant lookout for the slightest sign of weakness in themselves or any allies serving alongside them. They wear the most black.

Sororitas Orders Non-Militant
As mentioned in the opening, not all of the Adepta Sororitas are actually Sisters of Battle. A number of Orders exist which officially serve non-combat-related roles in Imperial Society, although they tend to receive even less attention than their combat-fighting sisters. The largest source of info on these Sororitas thus-far is the Blood of Martyrs sourcebook for Dark Heresy, which specifies the three most important Orders and mentions the existence of others, even lesser in nature. Blood of Martyrs even includes character classes for members of the three major Orders Non-Militant.

* Orders Dialogous: These Sororitas are dedicated to the studying of language, with tasks ranging from interpreting long-lost texts to accompanying Imperial diplomats on contact missions with intelligent xenos species. Thanks to their training, even the most average Sororitas knows several hundred everyday human dialects and dozens of secret cants, ciphers, even xenos tongues. Sororitas of these Orders are some of the few individuals judged worthy (and capable) of actually understanding the Eldar tongue.
* Orders Famulous: Figuratively the Bene Gesserit, without the kung fu skills from perfect body control. These Sororitas serve intimately with the upper echelons of Imperial society, acting as chamberlains, counselors, and consuls to the nobility. Their focus is on the spiritual and genetic purity of the human race, so they concern themselves with not only seeing to the education of nobles, but also secretly arranging alliances and marriages, in the hope of preventing corruption and inbreeding from taking root. They are particularly involved in tracking the manifestations of saints, which makes them a popular ally for Thorian Inquisitors.
* Orders Hospitaller: Healers and medics, these Sororitas are amongst the most skilled and compassionate surgeons in the Imperium, meaning they are commonly found attached to the Imperial Guard. Given their mission, they are one of the more beloved orders by the common citizenry of the Imperium. Of course, this being the Imperium, they're also expert torturers often called upon for that purpose by the Ecclesiarchy and the Inquisition, though Inquisitors are cautioned against using Hospitallers to keep important heretics alive; they have a bad tendency to forget about the future gains and instead "take the Emperor's justice into their own hands".
* Others: Scores, perhaps even hundreds, of minor non-militant Orders exist within the Adepta Sororitas. Blood of Martyrs mentions the Orders Sabine (who infiltrate newly rediscovered worlds and prepare them for the Missionarius Galaxia) and Orders Pronatus (guardians of sacred relics) as examples of more wide-spread Orders Non-Militant, and three "local" Orders in the forms of the Madriga (temple choirs), Planxilium (leading processionals on holy days) and Vespila (sanctifying the dead and forensic specialists).

Sisters Snuff
Back in 1st Edition, they were present fluff only as an order that was essentially the Inquisition for everyone including the Inquisition (like an Inquisition Internal Affairs branch; a "who watches the watchmen?" deal) and Space Marines. This would change in later editions, when they eventually get their own codex.

In 1997, when the Necrons were launched, Games Workshop had them face the Sisters in a Battle report, which the Sisters lost. The results of this battle report then became the Sanctuary 101 fluff. Games Workshop liked the result so much that they decided the Sisters of Battle should get slaughtered all the time. Unless they are falling to Chaos, obviously. Some fans blame popular GW whipping boy Matt "Spiritual Liege" Ward for this tendency, but it was there long before he got here and it continues to exist after he left.

Please note that while fa/tg/uys masturbate furiously to fanfics of Sisters engaging in bdsm fetish sex with the likes of other Lesbian sisters, servitors, children, Schola Progenium cadets, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Half-Eldar or even the likes of Nurgle, all of the below actually, canonically fucking happened. (It should also be worth noting that they're getting stomped by their own fucking allies in most of these.)

[[File:Warhammer_40k_sisters_of_battle_adeptas_sororitas_battling_Dark_Eldar.jpg|thumb|200px|right|Heroic Lesbian Space Nuns + Evil BDSM Space Elves = Shut up and take my money! FAP !FAP! FAP! ]]
Some highlights include:
* Some of a Dialogus Order and some Battle Sisters turned to Chaos by a Slaaneshi Keeper of Secrets.
* A whole Order Mind Controlled by one Chaos Psyker. Fucking Goto (This happened again in the Ciaphas Cain books, although it was only a tiny convent with a couple of squads of sisters, not a entire Order and said pskyer was also a direct lieutenant of the Despoiler himself and could control entire planets).
* An Order is present in another Ciaphas Cain book, wherein they're tricked into exterminating the workers of a mining outpost and sheltering a rogue Inquisitor. In an unrelated matter, they nearly cost the Imperial Guard a crucial battle against the Tyranids because they couldn't keep their bloodlust in check (Only Ciaphas Cain calling them out for leaving countless civilians to be slaughtered in their temples as they pushed forward made them reconsider). That said, it's one of the kinder portrayals in this list, because the Sisters in that battle do manage to make it back to the defense lines, and the entire Order dies in a later battle covering the Commissar's exit in repentance.
* A strike force of Celestians and an Inquisitor being killed, cannibalized, and sacrificed by the Sons of Malice Astartes chapter for disturbing their victory rites and falsely accusing the chapter of heresy. (To be fair, a small force of sisters against an entire Chapter? Still doesn't excuse the cannibalism, though.)
* A whole shrine-world of Sisters killed by a <s>Helbrute</s> Daemon Engine powered by rage. It shrugs off meltas, meltabombs and multiple Exorcist volleys, and the efforts of a number of Salamanders in Terminator armour. A Living Saint even gives up her divinity (not to be confused with virginity) to stop it by speaking the bound Daemon's true name (her order had a vow of silence, probably so the audio recording team didn't need to hire women to do any of the speaking rolls for the audio drama), therefore weakening it after her aura of peace causes it to calm down and shrink down to the size of a man instead of a massive daemon walker. The daemon is then destroyed when its shell is broken after a Space Marine decides to throw a Thunder Hammer at it. We are not making this shit up.
* A detachment of Sisters killed by Grey Knights, their bodies sliced open and their blood applied to the Grey Knights' armor, so the Grey Knights can be immune to the Bloodtide's effects (though some of the Sisters were immune with faith alone, make of that what you will). The Bloodtide was retconned in the most recent Grey Knights Codex to instead go down holding the line long enough for their Grey Knight allies to finish off the Daemons. Still losing, but at least this time they die with dignity.
* In another instance of Grey Knight-on-Sororita violence, during the climax of the first novel of the Grey Knight series, a detachment of Sisters led by Cannoness Ludmilla is tricked by a Chaos-turned Inquisitor into thinking that the Grey Knights pursuing it are Chaos Space Marines. Later (as in a few pages later), said detachment gets nearly kamikaze'd by said Grey Knight Strike Cruiser, which itself was shot down by Imperial Navy ships fooled into thinking that it was Chaos - starting to see a pattern here? Surprisingly, the only dudes that die from the crash are Imperial Guard and PDF - the Sisters survive but only to get the ever-Emprah-lovin' shit beaten out of them by the surviving Grey Knights. The sisters pull no punches, however, and do manage to take out a few of Alaric's squadmates, so power to them. BUT WAIT. Seeing as this was written by a much more competent author, unlike the ambiguous piece of shite-fluff written by a certain spiritual liege, both sides figure out that this was part of an elaborate case of JUST AS PLANNED, they stop fighting, and even more shockingly, the person who ends it is Cannoness Ludmilla, after noticing the FUCKHUEG books bolted on the GK's mighty pauldrons, and team up to take down the Big Baddy.

* Apart from the codex stuff, they were also stomped in the video game Dawn of War: Soulstorm. It all started when Selena Agna of the Sacred Rose falsely accused Governer General Vance Motherfucking Stubbs for the Warp Storm that appeared in Kaurava system. The sisters then had a zealots hard on which resulted in them thinking that everyone, even their imperial brethren (Space Marines and Imperial Guards) should be purged. Stubbs, like a true gentleman, not only dismissed the claim, but was also planning to destroy the sisters without the worries of committing a heretical action because "fuck you, no way me and my men gonna die for from some crazy bitch's accusation." They were presumably killed sacrificing themselves in an attempt to destroy the enemy, though we don't know who it was that wiped them out (however considering that Gorgutz is the canonical winner, it was likely him). Also, funny story, but that bit about accusing the Imperial Guard of starting the Warp Storm? They were right. The Chaos ending reveals that the storm was triggered by an Imperial Guardsman who turned out to be a latent psyker. Oops.

The Sudden Yet Inevitable Betrayal
MattWard

On August 1, 2011 Games Workshop finally decided to attempt to "revamp" the Sisters of Battle with a White Dwarf codex, much to the aggravation of about two thirds of the Witch Hunters' remaining playerbase. It was by no means a horrible update; initial worries on /tg/ suggested it to be akin to a biblical plague in terms of disaster-level, when in truth it was simply sub-average. The update had its fluff written by your SPIRITUAL LIEGE. In spite of this, it was squarely in-level with another bad codex update, because the rules were clearly written by committee.

Gone were the various inquisitorial units that got gobbled up by the Grey Knights codex update. This meant that many of the classics, like Lord Inquisitor Krazypantzoff and Temple Assassins, were gone, though they were replaced with Ecclesiarchy characters like Uriah Jacobus and Arch-Confessor Kyrinov. The Sisters did get some of Grey Knight units, namely Death Cult Assassins, Arco-Flagellants, and Crusaders, though their usefulness was questionable at best. Immolators took a nasty nerf-bat to the face, being unable to fire on the move and losing all fire-points, which basically made them more-cost-effective Razorback Transports). Who would have thought that Games Workshop would update an army by nerfing the one model every player had a couple of so that they all have to go out and buy new models?

Faith was functionally changed to a game of roulette, with randomized dice rolls deciding how much (if anything at all) you get. Units were given very specific faith powers on a squad-by-squad basis now, and whilst several were powerful, others were meh at best. Whereas before you had a nice general army that could use faith points to adapt to different situations, in the Dwarf-dex system you had mostly weaker powers that were unreliable. Powers that most other units for similar points get permanently.

Sisters Repentia were originally purportedly nerfed, but in the end they were vastly better, boasting a 6++ invulnerable save, Fleet, and double their original number of attacks with a faith act to do more on death - meaning they stood a good chance of fucking up a lot of units they wouldn't pre-update... So now instead of paying ridiculous prices for a sick joke, you're just paying ridiculous prices for a suicide squad. At least they'll rape shit while they're there now. Progress!

Sadly, things were muddled by a spree of fake releases as part of an April Fool's Prank. Original reports of genuinely useful units to offset the loss of the Stormtroopers and inducted forces thus turned out to be false. There was also talk of a new heavy transport/assault vehicle called the Repressor, but it turned out to be part of the same fucking April Fool's Prank and is still Forgeworld-only (which sucks because it would be an improvement). Of the new characters, Kyrinov was semi-useful, and Jacobus was near-mandatory if you wanted to do anything with Acts of Faith. So in summary, about a third of the Sisters' armory is now gone without being replaced by anything. (The knights feel your pain now.)

The biggest kick in the cunt for the Sisters, aside from the obvious loss of utility units, was the loss of ally rules and inducted unit rules. One of the biggest advantages the Sisters had was the ability to, courtesy of the Ordo Hereticus, requisition allied forces. A time-honored method of getting around the relatively weak Sisters of Battle vehicular lineup was to take some Inducted Guardsmen for a Leman Russ or two, or Space Marines for a Predator. The loss of Inquisitors also came with the loss of Land Raiders as dedicated transports, which was another stab at their vehicular capabilities.

The Eternal Vigil
While many members of /tg/ are violently, gleefully convinced the sisters are on their way to be squatted, a tiny contingent of the faithful keeps a candle burning, waiting for the day that their beloved bolter bitches will rise again (tiny bubbles and all). Behold, our prayers has been answered IN PLASTIC!

*0172008.M3: The Sisters are released as a playable faction in Dawn of War: Soulstorm. While it is poorly designed and built, it still drums up some enthusiasm for the Sisters. Many conflicted feels are had.
*0583011.M3: The Destroyer and The Cruddace release a playable White Dwarf codex for the sisters, hinting at a similar treatment to the Blood <s>Angels </s> <s> heretics </s> fuck you.
*0608012.M3: The sisters are retained for the 6E allies system and given a new flyer via Forge World. An unconfirmed leak shows a line up of new Sisters characters in development.
*0569013.M3: Faithful pilgrims supplicate themselves before the great and powerful Jervis Johnson asking for news on the Sisters. They are told that all armies are being worked on and there are no plans to discontinue support for the sisters. The Kelly adds that modeling issues prevented their release previously.
*05611013.M3: Rumors begin swirling about an official digital codex release for the Sisters. A leaked and subsequently confirmed White Dwarf advert later confirms this, and promises an updated version of the 5e codex. A later interview with The Cruddace indicates that the codex will include tweaks to Faith and points cost, and that if it sells well enough it may get a physical release. The release date for the digital codex was set for October 19th. Later comments on the GW Digital Editions facebook page confirms a Warlord Traits Chart, Ecclesiarchy Relics and an Altar of War, in addition to some updates, new fluff and artwork and changes to faith and points costs. It appears that the Sisters prayers have been at least partially answered. A physical release however is still very much dependent on the sale of this eBook however. Also during all this GW changes the name from Sisters of Battle to Adepta Sororitas most likely because it sounds cooler and is easier to maintain copyright on. The reactions are mixed when the Codex is released, with such changes like making all Acts of Faith usable only once, maximum twice, per battle and many buffs and nerfs around the board, leaving many arguing whatever the Sisters got better or majorly screwed. However, this mixed reception is better than the universally negative reception of the White Dwarf codex.
*09999015.M3: Escalation is released, alongside Stronghold Assault. While Stronghold Assault slips by unnoticed, the Sisters of Battle receive no Lords of War choices in an otherwise controversial and poorly thought out expansion. It then falls to Forge World to release a downloadable sheet a few days later saying that Sisters armies can take Warhound & Reaver titans, as well as Marauder Bombers & Destroyers as Lords of War. The Sisters have yet to comment on how overkill these choices might be if they can ever deploy them. The Reaver is at least far too expensive for normal games.
*0914016.M3: The Adepta Sororitas digital codex finally gets a physical release as part of Codex: Imperial Agents. Like the digital codex, the new one has a mixed reception, as it removes Saint Celestine from the army (leaving the Sisters with a single named character) and comes with a formation that called the Vestal Task Force that isn't great. However, it also allows for Ministorum Priests to be taken independently, and separates the component units of the Ecclesiarchy Battle Conclave, though these units are not given any buffs to make them useful on their own. Not much, but it was something.

*0999016.M3: The Warhammer TV team, after the initial hint in the video which saw Magnus announced, releases a compilation of 2016 launches. At the end of said video can be seen clearly several launches of January, including no other than a new plastic kit of the Living Saint Celestine, supposedly tied to the release of The Gathering Storm: Fall of Cadia. The internet, and specially /tg/ and the SoB players go nuts shortly after that, which only gets worse after the confirmation in a Twitch live few hours later.
*0019017.M3: Fall of Cadia releases and Sisters are starting to return to the limelight. Not only do the Nuns With Guns play a substantial role in the 13th Black Crusade, but Saint Celestine is one of the key characters of the story, bringing reinforcements, rallying the beleaguered Imperial Forces, and facing off with Abaddon himself. She also gets updated rules which turn her into a powerhouse, capable of calling orbital strikes, chopping tanks in half, buffing nearby Imperial units, and becoming nearly impossible to kill. The book also comes with additional Ecclesiarchy Relics, causing much rejoicing among SoB fans.
*0233018.M3: In the Adepticon XVI of 018.M3, the team disclosed a plethora of information of future releases: Knights Castellan, photos of the Idoneth Deepkin for AoS, a TCG of AoS and more. One of these announcements is the confirmation that THE RENOVATION IN PLASTIC OF THE SISTERS OF BATTLE IS HAPPENING. This is due to the overwhelming support of the fanbase during the Great Survey, which convinced the high-ups to give them what is due. The release date is unconfirmed, but temporally is "Emperor's willing, 019.M3" and in the meantime the whole process of designing, creating and bringing them back will be made public. The Long Vigil is coming to an end. PRAISE THE EMPRAH!!
*0999018.M3: GW releases beta Adepta Sororitas rules in Chapter Approved 2018. Despite an insane amount of hype, the rules end up being rather lackluster, and are met with a mixed reaction from the community. Although the beta rules help Sisters in some ways, such as buffing Exorcists and making Uriah Jacobus worth his point cost, they also include a series of inexplicable nerfs which drastically reduce their overall utility as an army, such as removing eviscerators from Canonesses, splitting up Celestine and the Geminae Superia, and completely removing wargear options from Ministorum Priests. Worst of all, they reworked Acts of Faith into a points-based system which was both more confusing and less useful than the Index Acts of Faith rules, effectively giving Sisters an army-wide nerf. Fortunately, this was just a beta codex, and GW is listening to the community's response.
*0659019.M3: During the Nova open a new box set for the sisters was revealed, with new models for the Penitent engine and the Mistress of Repentance as well as confirming November to be the release month for the Sisters new range. The end of the Eternal Vigil is in sight.
*0877019.M03 The Sister of battle boxset is released..... and then instantly sells out, leaving many Sister fans without a box. GW addresses this saying there will be another chance to get the box in stores on November 29th. Almost as if this was planned. It's also announced that the proper release for Sisters with the multi-part kits will actually drop during January 2020, so Sister player will have to wait a little longer for the actual release.
Getting Started With The Nuns
Buy the 2019 starter set; its everything we hoped for.

Or, if you want an alternative...

Look to Anvil Industry, because the Sisters of the Burning Rose are on the way, and are awesome enough as is to kick the shit out of the current official Sisters models. GW's gonna have to really up their game if they don't want to be outdone by a 3rd Party manufacturer. Another good option is the Sisters of Faith from Shieldwolf Miniatures; so good, in fact, that Games Workshop sent the Kickstarter for them a dubious C&D because they were afraid of the competition.

[[File:WHFest2019-Sororitas1.jpg|250px|thumb|right|A fully painted sneak peak of things to come.
THIS IS NOT A DRILL, REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A DRILL. THE NUNS WITH GUNS ARE RETURNING AND SHALL BE IN PLASTIC NO LESS!!

On the 21st of March in the year of our Lord 2018, Warhammer Community uploaded a short video stating that (Emperor willing) Sisters will be getting some kind of an update in 2019. In addition, on the warhammer community page after all the Age of Sigmar stuff, they added that Sisters of Battle will be released in plastic form, with the starter released in November 2019.

The James Swallow books: SoBs can win too!
Among Black Library, there are two books, specifically starring the Sisters, that are widely considered to be some the finest portrayals of SoBs in all of 40K fluff. Both were authored by James Swallow, who decided that Sisters needed some attention and got to work. The first, Faith and Fire, has the Sisters battling with what are basically terrorist psykers on a shrine world while trying to uncover the reasons behind the attacks. Then there's the sequel, Hammer and Anvil. Remember reading about Sanctuary 101 up there? This book has them going back there and trying to figure out what happened. While saying too much would be spoiling it, it can be said that shit hits the fan hard and that the final battle is very epic stuff. Also, if you're feeling extra faithful, Swallow wrote an SoB audiobook called Red and Black. A prequel to Faith and Fire, it has the Sisters being sent to a recently rediscovered planet as representatives of the Imperium, and ultimately to judge it. Needless to say, things get complicated. Also features a Scottish SoB. So, you can help the Sisters by getting the above books so that Games Workshop and Black Library may decide to change their minds and give some love to these girls. Or at least give them some additional badass portrayals.

Tactics
The Sisters of Battle employ a costly yet simple tactic whenever they're called out for battle:

<br>1. Bring thousands of sexually deprived Sisters of Battle into the field.
<br>2.Arm them all with Melta and flame-based weapons. Small squads of Storm Bolters also encouraged.
<br>3.<s>Tell them they can shlick to the image of the Emperor if they triumph over the foul enemies of the Imperium.</s> HERESY. *BLAM*
<br>4.Set them loose, hope you are not fighting slaaneshi cult, hope you're fighting Dark Eldar wyches (although they do seem to be doing that just fine in one of the artworks on this page).
<br>5.If they do win, all remaining Imperial troops, save for the SoBs, are ordered off the field.
<br>6.No other accounts can be heard of, as remembrancers and all other Imperial journalists are sworn to an oath of silence on whatever events transpired (one theory is it would look like a mix of "Soldier of Fortune" and "Girls Gone Wild")
<br>7.????
<br>8.Profit.

(Yes we do have a real tactica, its here.)

Canoness Superior Junith Eruita is one of the new characters for the Adeptus Sororitas' Codex in 8th edition. She's quickly caught a lot of eyes, bringing some of the flavor of chariots back from 6th edition. The Iron Warriors tried to kill her by dropping a temple on her head; this failed, and she turned the temple's rubble into her own personal Popemobile, complete with guns.

Also, her haircut is a reference of Joan of Arc (or Jeanne d'Arc in french).

Fluff
Junith was an orphan picked up by the Schola after the Gethsephone Massacre and taken in by the Order of our Martyred Lady. As you can expect in a 40k backstory the records state she was noticed as a prodigy early by the instructors, both for her skill with a flamer and for her incredibly faithful Rage (think Ortan Cassius after the Tyrannic Wars, but in the body of a teenage girl). As a Celestian she was involved in a vicious war against the Iron Warriors, where the Sisters were tricked into taking cover in a basilica that the Iron Warriors then shelled and collapsed. Junith alone survived, crawling almost unharmed from the rubble onto a blessed pulpit of Saint Holline. The Sisters reinforcements arrived to drive back the Chaos Marines and see Junith miraculously alive. Junith Eruita decided this miracle was one to keep around, and had the pulpit excavated from the broken basilica and weaponized into her floaty space pope throne.

Crunch
As an HQ of the new Sisters of Battle Codex, Junith Eruita is a very interesting models. First off, the fact that it's a flying vehicle that moves 10" already gives it quite a lot of movement, which it will need considering the need of the current SoB meta to run straight at the enemies to unload melta goodness. A rosarius that grants 4++ invulnerable save is quite good alright, which will need considering that T4 and W7 is nothing that most current armies can't deal with, having a bad time dealing with snipers that could hurt her early on. You can always surround her with infantry and vehicles so that the enemy is limited to the snipers, but sometimes the snipers get lucky (a single squad of Eliminators can pretty much put her down if her invulnerable saves fail her, but that's what you have your miracle dice for). But its real value is the buffs for nearby Order of the Martyred Lady sororitas. Her first aura grants re-rolls of 1 for hitting and wounding to all Order of the Martyred Lady units around her, which is great considering how dependent the SoB they are to meltaspam (if you go with flamerspam, not so much, but hey, melta is probably more viable). The second aura effect is only for INFANTRY, but it grants an extra +1 to the Act of Faith invulnerable saves of nearby units, up to a maximum of 4++. Really good to make relatively weak infantry such as Repentia last longer in battle.

2600:1700:BF90:B950:7DC2:C809:A370:C1DF: /* The Reign of Blood */

The Age of Apostasy is one of the major time periods of the Imperium of Man. It was preceded by Nova Terra Interregnum and followed by the Age of Redemption, stretching from the beginning of M36 to mid-M37. It's basically the Protestant Reformation IN SPESS.

Wars of Faith
Contrary to popular belief, the Age of Apostasy actually started much earlier than the Reign of Blood, and had its roots in M33 with the establishment of the Temple of the Saviour Emperor, which was basically the Vatican: 40k-style, and with its position amongst the High Lords of Terra would actually impose taxes on the citizens of the Imperium.

There had been many separate cults of the Emperor, but the Temple either swallowed them all up, or obliterated them, to the point that the only cult that challenged them was the Confederation of Light which was a more penitent cult that was all about "giving" in the name of the Emprah, rather than building up big cathedrals and palaces.

There was a big war and the Confederation was removed as a major power player.

The Temple of the Saviour Emperor would only grow in strength as they accumulated wealth via taxation that should rightly have gone into the government funding; and power since they had a religious army to back themselves up, eventually causing the Administratum to wane in power to almost pointlessness.

There was a period of clever politicking when the Administratum thought they were on the come-back, but then the Ecclesiarchy declared "Screw you guys" and moved the seat of their power to Ophelia VII in a very expensive undertaking where they built new palaces for themselves and left Terra to rot.

300 years later, the Ecclesiarchy figured enough time had passed and they were in no danger of being messed with any more, and returned to Terra, having to raise Taxes even further to fund the move.

Funnily enough, this particular clusterfuck was based on a real period in history where the Holy See was moved from Rome to Avignon and back again during the 1300s due to the French king's influence over the Catholic Church, which had the same general effect on Rome as it did on Terra.

The Reign of Blood
The main event in the Age of Apostasy began around M36, when Goge Vandire, Master of the Administratum, had the Ecclesiarch assassinated and took control of the church himself. 40K being 40K, power went to his head and he began the so-called Reign of Blood, in which he purged the Imperium of any dissenters with the backing of armies of millions of frenzied Imperial Cultists and a personal army, called the Frateris Templars. Vandire proved difficult to unseat, as he was protected by an order of warrior women once known as the Daughters of the Emperor (renamed the Brides of the Emperor when he convinced them to serve him).

Eventually, the people of the Imperium grew tired of Vandire's rule, and when a young man named Sebastian Thor started warring against the mad High Lord, he was soon joined by a massive army known as the resurgent Confederation of Light (since the original followers had just gone into hiding). Vandire sent a fleet to deal with Thor's army, but when it was destroyed by a massive Warp Storm that appeared out of nowhere (and is still there by M41, called Storm of Emperor's Wrath), people took that as a sign that the Emperor favored Thor, and he became even more popular.

When Thor finally got to Terra, he joined forces with the Space Marines and Adeptus Mechanicus (who had never been friendly with the Ecclesiarchy to begin with), and managed to dislodge Vandire, forcing him to retreat to the heavily-fortified Ecclesiarchical sanctum of the Imperial Palace. With a Space Marine force spearheaded by the Imperial Fists and their successors (the Black Templars, the Soul Drinkers, and several others) it was assumed that Vandire would be easily overwhelmed. You can imagine the Coalition's surprise when instead of zealous but ineffective Frateris Militia, they unexpectedly were faced with a force of superbly trained and equipped warrior-women, clad in Power armour, wielding Bolters, skilled enough in warfare to challenge even Space Marines and who held their ground to the last woman in their utter, complete and absolute conviction they were defending the Big Guy himself. This was The Daughters of the Emperor (temporarily renamed "Brides of the Emperor" because Vandire was implied to be maybe probably definitely absolutely using them as sex slaves), and they proved to be too well entrenched for the Astartes premier fortification breaking experts to overcome quickly and what should have been a beheading alpha strike bogged down to the point it looked like it would turn into a massive meat grinder. Luckily for everyone involved, Thor had a Plan B: the Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes managed to infiltrate the compound (he and his warriors had remained at their post defending the Emperor at the centre of the Palace without intervention so far, or so Vandire thought) and brought Alicia Dominica, the leader of the Brides/Daughters of the Emperor, to a face-to-face meeting with Big.E himself. What exactly was said between the Emperor and the woman who would become the first leader of the Adepta Sororitas is unknown, but it's really not hard to guess that the essence of the message was 'My Daughter, Vandire deceived you and serves only himself'. When Alicia Dominica came out of the throne room, she was filled with such Rage that she ended up personally executing Vandire herself. His last words were "I don't have time to die; I'm too busy".

Thorian Reformation
With Vandire dead, Thor became the new Ecclesiarch (initially refusing the position, but the Adeptus Custodes commanded him to either take the position or die), and he instituted some reforms. First, he toned down the Ecclesiarchy's grandeur, insisting that the Church serve the Imperium as much as the other way around. Second, he issued the Decree Passive, a law which stated that the Ecclesiarchy should have no "men under arms". Finally, since he realized that the Ecclesiarchy still needed an armed force in case another Vandire tried to spring up, he reformed the Daughters of the Emperor into the Orders Militant of a new, all-female branch of the Ecclesiarchy, the Adepta Sororitas, reasoning that the Decree Passive didn't forbid them since they were women under arms and that the Ecclesiarchy shouldn't be left totally dependent on the other parts of the Imperium for its defense. Even in the grim, dark future, there are still rules lawyers. Bad ones, too, since any fool could point out that "men" also shares the definition of being another name for "human", thereby making any church Chamber Militant, regardless of gender, illegal. Of course, it is heresy to point this out, and heresy is decided by... oh. On the bright side, imagine how the Sororitas and the rest of the Imperium would react. The former is so fanatical they might genuinely kill themselves for being a "sinful existence" or some such. The latter would probably launch another reformation crusade in fear of a second Reign of Blood. After killing the "heretic" who pointed out the discrepancy. After all, if the Ecclesiarchy refuses to acknowledge that "men" also means "human" then they would be officially declaring half the species to no longer be considered human. The Imperium would not react well to that. To put it mildly, the Ecclesiarchy may well not manage to survive as an organization after the fallout from that.

If you're still trying to untangle the issue, remember that most of Vandire's former victims wanted the Ecclesiarchy up and gone. Hearing that Thor's second and third reforms were seemingly mutually exclusive probably shut them up with happy smiles, and hearing that the pious and largely-incorruptible Daughters would be doing the policing likely didn't raise any further complaints (and those that did complain shut themselves up quickly).

Anyway, to make sure these new reforms were followed, the Inquisition set up the Ordo Hereticus to both police the Ecclesiarchy and protect the purity of its teachings, with the Battle-Sisters serving as the Ordo's Chamber Militant.

As proof that no good deed goes unpunished, Thor's head got taken by Trazyn the Infinite, making Trazyn no less than the fifth person to have claimed that valuable skull. I wish I was kidding, the paperwork is such a clusterfuck that three different Sororitas shrines and at least one Chaos jackass all claim they've got Thor's skull knocking around in their attic somewhere (although to his credit, this head is preserved in a jar, which makes it more plausible he did get the original).

Plague of Unbelief
Plague of Unbelief

Another minor event was the Plague of Unbelief, in which a rogue Cardinal built a personal empire after Terra was cut off by warpstorms towards the end of the Reign of Blood. The idiot might even have gotten away with it too, but then he got the genius idea to bother the Space Wolves. With his armies in shambles after learning that you shouldn't rouse a sleeping Wolf the hard way, it gave Confessor Dolan Chirosius the occasion to start a revolt that would ultimately give the crazy dumbass the boot.

On a galactic scale it's not a particularly important event, but as a story it is full of Awesome.

That's right, his name is Goge Vandire. G-O-G-E Vandire. How much eviler can a name get?

Goge Vandire is a jackass who took control of the Imperium during the Age of Apostasy, holding the positions of Ecclesiarch and Head of the Administratum at the same time, starting the Reign of Blood. If the Imperium is space Rome, this is spehss Caligula, Nero, and Commodus all in one nutty package. He was paranoid even by Imperial standards, and his reign saw the murder of many, many civilians. Surveillance servo-skulls on every street corner, random purges for imagined slights, this guy makes Joseph Stalin look friendly and fair-minded. Took a shitload of spes muhreens to take on the dipshit, and even then he only died because his female bodyguards (who may or may not have been his sex slaves as well; some evil dictators in real-life have done that) finally realized he was an asshole and cut off his head, possibly by order of The Emperor himself. At least he left behind some epic last words of "I don't have time to die; I'm too busy" which probably was adapted into some nice comedy movies for the Imperial citizenry. A good example of how no matter how bad the Imperium gets, it could always be worse. What a cunt.

Speaking of cunts, the Captain-General has the Emperor’s level of authority when the Emperor is incapacitated or at least does not contradict him. Interesting how he didn’t do shit about this horrorfest until the very end.

Reign of Blood
Even before taking power (well, even more power), Vandire got his way to becoming Master of the Administratum by back-stabbing, bribery and assassination.

When the current Ecclesiarch died, he managed to wrangle his own choice of Ecclesiarch into the grimdark Vatican, who ended up being the weakest guy to ever serve in the role. Thus when confidence in the church started to plummet he actually had a case for storming the palace, where apparently the space-pope was involved in some sort of debauchery that would put even the Borgias to shame. So he pronounced the Ecclesiarch guilty and took the job himself - what a hero! What isn't explained is how he could become Ecclesiarch if he isn't a member of the Ministorum in the first place. Like usual GW just sort of brushes off the impossible details no one else in the Imperial Senate or the Ecclesiarchy would tolerate.

Ruler of the Imperium
Absolute power corrupts absolutely, especially when the guy claiming the power was corrupt already.

Vandire went insane with power, and started claiming that he spoke with the voice of the Emperor himself, basically a "whatever I say, goes" and started getting clerks to write down whatever he said at all times.

He got himself a holographic map of the galaxy and started pointing at it and issuing crazy edicts:
*Purging all gingers from some worlds populations (no, we're not kidding).
*People from some worlds were forbidden from looking at the sky.
*Virus Bombing some planets with gene-viruses to eliminate imagined mutations.
*Enslaving all female children below 12 years old.
*Setting up Servo-Skulls everywhere to record citizens movements and conversations.
*Deciding that some worlds need their ice caps melted.
*Building effigies of himself hundreds of metres tall. Some of which were bigger than the statues of the Emperor next to them.

Daughters of the Emperor
When he found the world of San Leor he found a convent of holy sisters called the "Daughters of the Emperor". On his arrival his retainers said to the population that they had to throw him the biggest party EVAR on pain of death. So when he paraded down the streets he was met by the flower petals, incense and crowds singing praises to him (at gunpoint) all caught on pictcast for the rest of the galaxy to see.

When he got to the gate of the convent, they said something along the lines of "No Man May Enter Here" and half the Imperium expected another dead world, but Vandire stayed calm, and convinced the ladies to let him over the threshold where he would "prove" himself blessed by the Emperor; mostly by brandishing his Rosarius and saying "shoot me" since very few people on that backwater planet will have ever seen a Rosarius before.

Then he got himself a fanatical army of sexy bolter babes and named them the "Brides of the Emperor"

He also used the Brides of the Emperor for "singing, dancing, and other more exotic skills". So in addition to dictator and space-pope, his job description becomes all the more venerable with the addition <s>"Pimp of the Imperium."</s>BLAM The Emprah is the only pimp of the Imperium!

The End
He ruled for 70 years, up until Sebastian Thor showed up. To make a long story short, everyone from the Space marines to the Custodes was seriously fed up with Vandire's shit and invaded Terra. Vandire quickly ducked into a bunker and left it to the Brides to defend him. To their credit, the Brides were damn good at what they did, dragging Thor's forces in a grueling stalemate, forcing Thor to go with Plan B. The Custodes used their knowledge of Terra's secret passages to sneak behind the Brides' lines, but rather than kill Vandire themselves they talked with the six leaders of the Brides, most famously Alicia Dominica, and convinced them to talk with the Emperor himself instead of the deluded so-called reincarnation. You can guess how that went, and Dominica ordered her sisters to throw down their arms and let Thor's forces in while she confronted Vandire herself.

In his final moments Vandire looked as pathetic on the outside as he had always been on the inside: a cranky twitchy old man frantically scrabbling inane orders on balled-up pieces of paper and not even paying attention to the people about to BLAM him. His last words were said to be: "I don't have time to die! I'm too busy!" In honor of finally killing this guy, the Brides were reformed into the Sisters of Battle.

He was a huge dick and got what he had coming. The end. Fuck him.
Notice they are also the colour of wasps, undisputed douchebags of the <s>insect</s> world.]]

The Marines Malevolent are a Space Marine Chapter in Warhammer 40,000. They have only two real defining characteristics beyond their piss-hued Ceramite: they are complete assholes (even by WH40k standards), and they hate (and are hated by) the Salamanders, which is probably related to the first point. It may also be related to their unique approach to hostage situations (hint: it involves Whirlwinds). They're such super massive assholes that, if their douchebaggery manifested in reality, it would be as a Warp Rift which would collapse in on itself and sucks in the entire universe. Imagine Angry Marines but with all the anger, rage, and lolrandom cursing replaced with passive-aggressiveness, zero empathy, and complete dickishness. They're pretty much the poster boys of everything bad about the Imperium rolled into one collection of chucklefucks. Between that and the name, they're collectively the Goge Vandire of Space Marine Chapters: almost comically evil, comically dickish, and overtly malignant... except that the Imperium eventually "solved" their Goge problem, at least.

Relationship with the wider Imperium of Man
They have a shortage of power armour (pissing off the Adeptus Mechanicus tends to have that effect), so they use whatever parts of it they can find. In the novel Salamander by Nick Kyme, they even steal some from an abandoned forge ship. Not only do they justify such acts by necessity born of their own infamy, but also by their sheer contempt for anyone who is <s>inferior</s> not them. This, coupled with their aforementioned lack of empathy, means they show outright scorn towards the common people of the Imperium, and won't bat an eye at slaughtering confirmed faithful humans to accomplish their goals, such as wading through the unclean masses in their spikiest boots on their way to convert the Ministorum orphanage into a new firing range.

Most Chapters such as the Imperial Fists or Ultramarines regard casualties, particularly those of the collateral nature, to be unfortunate but largely unavoidable. Yes, many civilians and Guardsmen died during the orks' assault on the hive, but had we not fought the xenos there, many more would be dead. Civilian casualties should be avoided but the mission always comes first.

A few Chapters such as the Salamanders, Lamenters (The counterpart to the Marines Malevolent in many ways, being poorly equipped and distrusted by the Imperium at large, but also being genuinely compassionate to regular humans as opposed to these dickwads), and the Space Wolves go out of their way to minimize casualties. Battle-brothers, we few are all that stand between the heretics and the refugee camp behind us. The PDF and the Guard have not the men to spare to protect this place as they withdraw themselves. But curses upon ourselves and our Chapter if we allow that degenerate rabble to harm the Emperor's faithful!

But then we have the Marines Malevolent; their attitude is that the dead are worthy of contempt, for they were too weak to live, and if the wounded suffer, then it is likewise because they are wretchedly weak. Help, Guardsman? No, you will only have my scorn. Sounds vaguely familiar... This might be why the other Space Marine assholes known for sacrificing civvies, the Star Phantoms, nearly destroyed the chapter during the Macharian Heresy.

Their callous and insufferably smug attitude towards authorities and civilians has even caused the ire of the Inquisition to press charges to censure the chapter. Yes, even the trigger-happy Dickbags that pop Exterminatus like Christmas presents, find the Marines Malevolent to be fucking unpleasant and cruel towards civilians. In fact, when the Star Phantoms nearly blew up the Marines Malevolent by total accident on some planet called Thoth, the Inquisition found the irony so hilarious they didn't press any charges against the Phantoms.

Relationship with other Space Marine Chapters
At this point, with the amount of hatred the Chapter has garnered, it's pretty amazing in and of itself that several other, cooler Chapters don't just petition the High Lords to disband them and give the armour and weapons to other Chapters who don't shit themselves laughing after launching artillery at a refugee camp. Hell, since the Imperium is so bumfuck retarded, they could probably get away with being stamped as 'Traitors' for killing civilians for no reason (ooh, some Kommandos are nearby. It'd be nice if we had some sort of low-key, un-Power Armoured marine who has been trained in stealth and reconnaissance to go and take them out).

And should that happen, I can't think of too many Chapters who would turn down the chance to kick the Marines Malevolent in their collective dicks. Especially if the Minotaurs and SPESS SHARKSH!!! happen to be in the area. One of the Malevolents challenged a Black Templar to an honor duel, just so he could take the Templar's armor when he won, so the Templars would probably be first in line as well.

They even blackmailed a First Founding Chapter Master to the point that he had to physically restrain himself from smacking the fuck out of the Malevolent representative. When the two met again at the end of the Third Armageddon campaign, said Chapter Master openly insulted the Malevolent Captain (after he beat the ever-living fuck out of him in private) in front of the entire army, causing much sniggering amongst the nearer Guardsmen and earning the Chapter Master (Tu'Shan) the title Hero of Armageddon.

Well OK, he got it for kicking Thraka's ass, but who cares.

One could make the argument that this dickishness is just extreme pragmatism, combined with scorn towards everyone (including their own) who show weakness. You'd be wrong. Being pragmatic isn't bad in itself as such Chapters like the Raven Guard, or their successors like the Raptors, show multiple times, but the Marines Malevolent are just callous. They see others as an interference in doing their job as Marines, while those who prevent them in doing so actually do so because even they draw a line. An Inquisitor must be pragmatic due to the things he has to deal with constantly, but even then he wouldn't go that far as to put an entire sector to the torch unless he has enough evidence to justify this act, and even then he'll go to great lengths to hit places where heresy and corruption are at its worst and then cauterize the rest before it grows and strengthens itself. The Raptors Space Marines are known for their pragmatic take on warfare, yet even then they will never go so far as to waste allies or bombard a place with civilians in it. This is the reason why Marines Malevolent are not liked <s>that much</s> by the Imperium.

They also have piss-coloured armour, the ungrateful fucks.

Other forces in the Warhammer 40k universe may be EEEEEEVIL!!! on some sort of grand cosmic scale of grimdark, but very few are just nasty, petty, and cruel in an all-too human way. They treat their Chapter Serfs like slaves, and for those not in the know, this is otherwise unheard of. That's not grimdark, M&Ms, that's just... unpleasant.

In short, in a galaxy of horror and tragedy, most suffer jadedly, a few grieve but only the Marines Malevolent jeer.... well, and the Iron Hands, but that's basically retconned now. Alternately: a Marine Malevolent is, on average, ten pounds of jerkwad in an eight pound bag.

42nd Millenium
They're still active in the 42nd Millennium (unfortunately). A Marines Malevolent relief force arrived to rescue some Custodians defending Primaris Marine Gene-tech on Loque II, just in time to rescue the last surviving Custodian and the gene-tech. Knowing the Marines Malevolent, they probably not only tried to take the gene-tech but they probably took the credit too.

As a side note, when asked what the chapter opinion was of the Marines Malevolent, the Angry Marines actually got so mad that they each individually popped a blood vessel and passed out before they could give their answer. The resulting Angry Energy wave was so powerful that warp travel became virtually impossible an entire sector for at least ten weeks.

Characters (or lack thereof)
They have only a few named characters, and only a few are alive at the time of the 'present day' in 40k. They had no fewer than thirty three of their men (including a Veteran Sergeant, two Techmarines, a pilot, and a fucking APOTHECARY) get infected by the Obliterator Virus while they were boarding the ship Demetrion, so Vinyar basically told them to go hit themselves with Tu'Shan's Thunder Hammer until they were purified. We are not kidding.

Captain "Dickbag" Vinyar
The only Malevolent known to be alive at the time of Medusa was Vinyar, a Company Captain with a raging grudge against Tu'Shan, and the actual cause of most of the Chapter's reputation. No really. read the books. While the chapter has a reputation for being dicks, its because they are compared to the snugglebunnies called the Salamanders, but over all are only dicks out of pragmatism. FUCKING VINYAR thought is your garden variety petty goddamn jackass. While a normal Marine Malevolent will use one of his brothers as bait for the enemy so the rest can attack more safely, Vinyar will straight have one of the other Marine Malevolent's killed just to clap back at that guy's friend. Or have a bunch of his troops, who got chaos corrupted, attack an allied Astartes homeworld, just to clap back at that guy for calling him out on his dickatry! And unlike most unreasonably petty fucking jerkoffs depicted in 40k, Vinyar doesn't even have the excuse of being Chaos corrupted. HE IS JUST A COMPLETE PRICK.

Chapter Tactics
Friend no one Likes: When determining the level of allegiance between a faction with this chapter tactic and another without it decrease the standard level of allegiance as shown on the allies matrix by one to a minimum of Come the Apocalypse.

Victory at any Cost: Units with this chapter tactic may make shooting attacks at enemy units that are locked in close combat with any allied unit that does not have this chapter tactic. To represent the nature of firing into a swirling melee use the following rules when firing: If using a blast or template weapon place them as usual but allied models may be under its starting position and roll for scatter as necessary. If firing another kind of weapon target the enemy unit as normal and roll to hit with a -1 to ballistic skill. For each successful to hit, roll to wound against the enemy unit, but for each miss roll to wound against the allied unit. All wounds are randomly allocated and saves may be taken as normal.

Disdain for the Weak: Units with this chapter tactic automatically pass morale checks the unit must take due to Casualties or to Losing an Assault.

Daily Rituals
04:00: -Morning. Marines Malevolent awaken and turn off the obnoxious heavy metal music and strobe lights playing outside of their soundproofed bedrooms. The chapter <s>slaves</s> serfs are beaten and whipped to awaken them from their 4 hours of sleep. Any who protest are shoved into hunter missiles.

05:00: -Enforcement of morale. Said hunter missles are launched to awaken the local populace. They always try to aim for adult care centers or hospitals.

06:00: -Morning Prayer. The chapter serfs are sent to collect cotton in the fields whilst the Marines Malevolent pray to the Emperor. These prayers are usually outright ignored.

07:00: -Morning Firing Rites. The chapter serfs return in time to be used as target practice for neophytes. They also practice yelling passive aggressive insults at the serfs for when any Salamanders show up.

08:00: -Morning Meal. The Marines Malevolent eat a light meal of waffles and milk. Any slightly overcooked waffle demands the immediate creation of ten serfs into servitors.

09:00: -Morning Battle Practice. Said servitors are destroyed with extreme prejudice with their families being sent messages about how worthless they were in life and death with pictures of their corpses attached to the letters.

10:00: -Midday Battle Practice. The chapter gathers to talk shit on the majority of the Imperium. This takes a large portion of the day, as the Mechanicus, Militarum, Ecclesiarchy, Inquisition, Iron Hands, Ultrasmurfs, Black Templars, Salamanders, half the population of their planet, and Angry Marines are all talked copious amounts of shit. This time is also set aside to defend the chapter when someone hears that they were talking shit.

15:00: -Afternoon Battle Practice. Realise they wasted all that time pointlessly, and so take it out on the chapter serfs by either killing them or burning the cotton they collected. May also fight any Salamanders that happen to be nearby (and usually get beat up by said Salamanders).

16:00: -Tactical Indoctrination. The Marines Malevolent study the works of history's greatest shitcunts, assholes, piss stains, arse weasels, ovary thieves, and cock munchers for inspiration. The first company read the collected works of the most revered of the Chapter's icons; the xenos abomination Assholetep, and the horrid Eldrad, kept secret from the rest of the Imperium.

17:00: -Recruitment. Kidnap innocent civilians to replenish their dwindling number of serfs. May also kidnap orphans to become future Marines Malevolent.

18:00: -Evening Meal. The Marines Malevolent giggle to themselves about how mad they made everyone else during their feast. Sometimes they try to eat cake stolen from Children's birthday parties, but usually cannot because the Inquisition ordered the Blood Ravens to steal it back. The Blood Ravens are all too happy to oblige.

19:00: -Night Fighting Training. The Marines Malevolent initiate evening battle practice. May or may not involve deepstriking directly into a funeral and making death jokes, depending on how they feel at the time.

20:00: -Free Time. The Marines Malevolent do all sorts of recreational activities. Typical activities include fine tuning their lack of empathy for any other living being, running up as big of an astropath charge as possible with long, meandering but awkward conversations that you aren't quite sure if you should hang up on, trying to start fights between loyalist chapters, "urban driving practise" which involves smashing civilian homes over with land raiders, verbally harassing any nearby orders of the Sisters Of Battle, and acquiring sweets by stealing them from small children after popping their balloons.

23:00: -Bed time. The Marines Malevolent decide to go to bed. They turn the heavy metal back on turn on obnoxiously bright strobing middle finger pattern spotlights to make sure none of plebs get any sleep, whether they be the Techpriests at the nearby manufactorum or the lowliest peasant.

00:00: -Actual Bed Time. The Chapter Serfs are finally allowed to "sleep".

2600:1700:BF90:B950:7DC2:C809:A370:C1DF: /* Coup */ "Quadrillions" is stretching it, the Imperium at large is estimated at 0.5 to 5 quadrillion

The Beheading was an event in 546.M32 where Drakan Vangorich, the Grand Master of the Officio Assassinorum rebelled against the High Lords of Terra.

Coup
In the mid-32nd millennium a great calamity befell the Imperium: the WAAAGH! Beast. The most vicious rampage made EVER by orkind drove the Imperium to its knees as dozens of Space Marine chapters were annihilated, the Imperial Fists were reduced to a single Astartes, and thousands of worlds were put to the torch. Terra itself was in a state of constant threat during a good chunk of the war.

The reaction from the High Lords of Terra varied from total incompetence to outright hindering the war effort (special note goes to the Ecclesiarch who wanted to WORSHIP the Orks and abandon the cult of the Emperor, and the Fabricator-General who just wanted to loot the Orks' tellyporta technology so the AdMech could teleport Mars out of the way, leaving Terra to its fate (extra stupid points to him since the only reason Mars was in danger was his demand that the Imperial Fists not destroy the Attack Moon so he could get the teleporter technology from it)) and thus costing more worlds and billiomns if not trillions of lives. Except for one (later two): Drakan Vangorich, the Grand Master of Assassins himself; and in spite (or perhaps because) of such a grim task, he was a bona fide patriot. He and Chapter Master Koorland made great efforts and manoeuvrers to get the filthy and complacent asses of the High Lords to work on the threat at hand. It suffices to say the two of them may be amongst the greatest heroes of the Imperium, for without them mankind would have been annihilated or reduced to savagery a la the Age of Strife.

Once the war was over, Drakan realized that, should there be another threat of a similar caliber, mankind would be wiped out due to the incompetence of the High Lords. This was especially evident when, as The Beast sent his diplomats asking for their surrender (yes, Ork diplomats had become a thing, thanks to the Beast), the High Lords were more concerned about their own political power than saving mankind. The final straw came when Vangorich found out that the Fabricator-General had teleported Ullanor away (instead of Exterminatus-ing it; the planet eventually became Armageddon). For the sake of the Imperium, the High Lords needed to die, and die they did. With the resources of the Assassin's temples at his call, it wasn't too hard for Vangorich to kill / replace every other member of the High Lords within 5 days. Vangorich himself was left top dog of the High Lords and had the rest of the council replaced with impostors or puppets making him sole ruler of the Imperium, which he led for about one-hundred years.

Vangorich's intentions were good, but he grew increasingly paranoid about the Imperium ever backsliding back into the state it had been before the Beast invaded. So while on the good side he did rebuild the Imperium's armed forces and restored planets that had been ravaged by the orks, his reign was marked with massacres, vicious reprisal, harsh punishment and increasingly totalitarian control. The Imperium remained strong and united under his rule (recovering well enough to sustain the Fourth Founding), but Terra finally grew sick of living in constant fear of their single ruler as he grew more and more erratic. The Astartes and Inquisition, agreeing on a unified goal for a change, decided that it was time to relieve Drakan Vangorich from office. Every other department in the Imperium stepped aside to let them do it.

Response
A strike force of 400 marines led by the Imperial Fists under Chapter Master Maximus Thane and supported by elements of newly created chapters (The Halo Brethren and Sable Swords specifically) landed on the Imperial palace to hunt down Drakan and seize control of the Senatorum Imperialis. The Officio responded in kind, deploying its most lethal operatives: the landing zones became killzones filled with snipers and the disembarking Astartes were assailed by hundreds of assassins from various temples. Callidus and Culexus harassed their advance, while Vindicares took shots at them from every angle. Venenum and Vanus operatives probably worked from behind the scenes to hinder their advance, but strangely no Eversor assassins were present. Despite losing half their numbers in the process, the Astartes managed to carve their way through the assassins and clear out the Senatorum for the most part. Thane then confronted Inquisitorial Representative Wienend, who revealed Vangorich had fled to the Eversor temple at the North pole. Both had a row of words lamenting the situation before Thane departed to hunt Vangorich down. Wienand stayed behind to die by a bomb trap Vangorich had placed in the Senatorum (she was aware of it, but felt it appropriate to go out with a bang given the circumstances).

The remains of the strike force assaulted the temple and confronted Vangorich, who had some final words with Thane, with both accusing the other of having some responsibility for the current situation (to be fair, running the Imperium would eventually drive anyone crazy, and Thane really should have stayed behind to help get things in order instead of crusading). Regardless, Vangorich sprung his trap by flooding the room with smoke and unleashing one hundred Eversors on the Astartes. The two forces cut each other down till only three remained: Chapter Master Thane of the Imperial Fists, Vangorich, and a single Eversor (Beast Krule, a former favored assassin of Vangorich who had been forcibly converted into an Eversor after betraying Vangorich earlier). Vangorich ordered Krule to cut down Thane, but the Assassin broke his programming long enough to refuse, giving Thane time to get a bead on Vangorich. Oddly, Vangorich's last words were asking if Thane would like to know how Konrad Curze died (possibly drawing a parallel between their intended roles in the Imperium) but Thane was having none of it, killing him before he could answer.

Over the next millenia, many reformations were implemented to prevent one person gaining complete control of the Imperium and causing such trouble (abolishing the position of Lord commander of the Imperium, for instance), helped along by a certain asshole being another great example of what the Imperium does NOT need in a leader. Also, the Ordo Sicarius was set up to keep some assassins pointed at the assassins.

Aftermath
In the immediate aftermath of Vangorich's death the Imperium fell into a state of anarchy, as everyone and their sisters vied for a place in the new version of the Senatorium Imperialis, leading (ironically as Vangorich had predicted) to yet another period of anarchy due to human incompetence. For a century long there was no central leadership and no official successors for the High Lords as people vied and struggled for political power. Luckily Agnathio, the then-Chapter Master of the Ultramarines got fed up with this shit real quick, gathered up no less than fifty of his fellow Chapter Masters and their Space Marines; and they all set course for Terra where they proceeded with cock-slapping everyone in the Senatorum until once again twelve High Lords were chosen, finally restoring stability to the Imperium.

Clash of the Canon
One of the Chapters who fought against the Assassins was the Sable Swords. The Chapter that is currently known as the Sable Swords was formed from the remnants of the Astral Knights, nearly wiped out during their siege of The World Engine… which was in 926.M41. 9380 years later. It is possible that they have been refounded after their destruction (like with the Minotaurs), but this is not being hinted in what is known about them like with the Minotaurs. Or it could have been another fuckup, who knows.

The Offical Canon does however list the Sable Swords as Losing over 800 Marines in the fighting. So they were most likely Massacred and re-built.

In addition, there's a footnote in the fluff that says the administratum didn't realise that there were two chapters named the Sable Swords until both were destroyed in fighting in the 13th Black Crusade. This probably explains it.
