: This article is about the Imperial Guard artillery piece. For the cannon carried by this artillery piece, see Medusa siege cannon. For the mythical character (and other things called Medusa), see Medusa.

The Medusa Siege Gun also known as "The Testical Gun, Adrews Bane, The Big Bangy Thing" is a self-propelled artillery piece consisting of a Medusa siege cannon mounted in a Chimera chassis. It is used by the Imperial Guard to breach and collapse fortifications and buildings. Rather than lob shells up and over fortress walls, the Medusa shoots right at them with tremendously powerful penetrating egg shells.

The combination of large shells fired at low trajectories leaves the Medusa in the unfortunate position of having the short range of a direct-fire weapon and the relatively light armor of self-propelled artillery. It needs to be escorted within spitting distance (relative to other artillery pieces) of the fortification to be destroyed, which means that the entire surrounding region must be secured (though this is not impossible for the Guard). The large size of the Medusa's shells restrict it from carrying more than 18 at a time; though one is enough to flatten almost any structure, it still restricts the Medusa to operating where supply lines are firmly established and well-defended.

Because the Leman Russ Demolisher can fire egg shells that are just as powerful (though slightly shorter-ranged) while being better armored and carrying more ammunition, armies in the 41st millennium keep their Medusas as reserve weapons and avoid deploying them as much as possible. Attempts to re-purpose the Medusa have not been successful -- it does not have the range to be true artillery, and it is too lightly armored to support infantry at the front lines. Apparently the idea of changing its munitions to be similar to Demolisher sea shells or even a Baneblade-cannon round's rockets has not occurred to the Mechanicus. If it did, though, whoever was stupid enough to mention it would probably be executed for heresy.

Variants
; Armageddon pattern : The hive world of Armageddon commissioned a special pattern of Medusa with a fully enclosed interior -- not to protect the crew, but to protect the breech and loading mechanisms of the cannon. If there were a cheaper way to accomplish the latter without the former, the Departmento Munitorum probably would have taken it, but fortunately for the Armageddon Steel Legion (and other regiments who use their pattern of Medusa) there wasn't.

; Vanaheim pattern : Vanaheim apparently makes gunshields, and only gunshields. That said, they're much better looking than the default curved plate, so the Adeptus Mechanicus keeps them in business (and we keep buying the model from Forge World).

Tabletop
The Medusa siege cannon's default weapon is an S10 AP2 large blast with a range of 36" -- the shortest of the artillery pieces, and shorter-ranged than many cannons available to the Leman Russ Battle Tank, but not problematically so for most regular 40K games. The trade-off is that it fires a higher strength and better AP than any Imperial Guard weapon other than the Deathstrike Missile Launcher, and it can be upgraded to fire 48" AP1 Heavy 1 "bastion-breacher" shells for a few points apiece (they roll 2d6 for armor penetration, though they only use the small blast template) -- in short, what it hits, it will destroy.

The model was developed by Forge World for Imperial Armour Volume One: Imperial Guard & Imperial Navy, where it was given rules. It became part of the main-line IG army list in the fifth edition codex. Forge World has continued to produce the model as well as conversion kits and variants.

The Ragnarok heavy tank is a frontline armored monster first produced during the Krieg civil war as an alternative to the Leman Russ. This giant metal box was developed out of necessity by the regiments of the Death Korps of Krieg during the 500-year-long clusterfuck that consumed Krieg. The Ragnarok was the largest and most impressive (For WW1 trench enthusiasts) of the vehicles designed during that conflict, and was intended to replace the many Leman Russ tanks that were lost by the Loyalist Krieg forces during their battle against the persistent Traitors.

Overview
The Ragnarok is essentially a knockoff of the Soviet KV-2, with the usual 40K additions of an even bigger gun than what the IRL tank had and no space for ammunition or a suitable engine (a little unnecessary actually, as the KV-2 was already pretty ridiculous itself... more on that below). Firaeveus Carron would have a fit if he ever saw one. The tank is still used by those crazies the Imperium calls the Death Korps of Krieg, siege platoons, or any regiment too poor or too under-equipped to get their hands on a Leman Russ. This thing is slow, heavy, armoured like hell, and capable of dishing out about the same amount of punishment as a Leman Russ. Performing surprisingly well for a kitbash, the Techpriests on the Forge World Lucius decided to tidy it up, dub it the "Mobile Bunker Mk. 1", and then start churning them out. The Ragnarok actually performs pretty well when used as an infantry tank, like how the pre-Heresy Malcador heavy was a good cavalry tank. Look up on some other wiki what those types of tanks are, if you're curious.

In a sense, the Ragnarok is the Siegfried's older brother, as they are both kitbashes-turned military vehicles that was given the thumbs-up by the AdMech to continue production so long as they garnered results. Whilst one would argue that the Ragnarok suffers from a horrendously-high profile even by the standards of the Imperium tanks, it is also dirt-cheap and easy to produce right off the shelf. Keeping that in mind, the Ragnarok needs overwhelming numbers to compensate for its piss-poor boxy design and overly-tall profile. If any form of anti-tank weaponry happens to be in the hands of the enemy then it's G-fucking-G, 'cause a Ragnarok facing that will not return to base in one piece. As the old saying goes, you get what you paid for, and the Ragnarok is no exception.

Fiction vs Reality
You know your design team sucks balls if Games Workshop and the WH40k Wikia themselves admit it is one ugly hunk of metal. On the other hand, the Wikia also applauded it for its "solid design", despite making that previous statement of the tank's ugliness and incompetent design... more proof of the WH40k Wikia's fail. But even calling it a "design" is already a bit of a stretch, since as mentioned above, the Ragnarok is basically a copy-pasted KV-2 heavy artillery tank. Without going into too many details, basically the derpy, boxy monstrosity only saw the light of day because the Soviets needed a self-propelled howitzer like *right the fuck now* during the Winter War against Finland. So they took some of their freshly-minted heavy tanks (going by the designation "KV-1"... see what they did there?), which they believed would be sturdy enough to act as a vehicle base, threw away their old turrets, jammed 152mm howitzers they had lying around into new turrets on top of them, and off they went to the front lines... where the design's multiple flaws became all-too-readily apparent. The KV-2 was way too big (they stood out like fucking elephants on the battlefields of the Eastern Front), way too slow (think "retarded turtle" slow), and the gun was so heavy that it could (and often did) jam the turret if it was rotated without due precautions, or even flip the tank on its side if fired at the wrong angle. It was definitely a rush job (unsurprising, since the Winter War lasted but a hundred days in all), and like most rush jobs it performed quite poorly. Still, unlike some other idiots, the Soviets realized that it was no good just as quickly as they designed and deployed it, and later in WW2 they went for a (lighter, more maneuverable, and cheaper) turretless self-propelled gun that did the job of blasting bunkers and fortifications (and the occasional German tank) apart very well, and opened the door for the infantry just as well with high-explosive shells.

For all of its derptastic flaws though, the KV-2 at least has one badass story that could be attributed to its name: a lone KV-1 heavy tank (not a KV-2, since the turret armor on it is super thin) found itself behind enemy lines during the Battle of Raseiniai in 1941 after already murderfucking a column of German supply trucks. Four 50mm German anti-tank guns and a heavy 88mm gun (basically the heaviest anti-tank weapon that the Germans had at the time) tried to knock it out after it stopped on a road, but the Soviet tank destroyed them all first. The Germans followed up with combat engineers trying to blow up the damn thing with satchel charges, but they only succeeded in (maybe) damaging the tracks a bit. Holy shit.
Finally, the morning after the first encounter with the KV, the Germans sent tanks in front of it as a diversion while another 88mm tried to launch shots into the heavy tank from the rear. Out of several shots made by the BFG, only two managed even to penetrate the rear of the KV (keep in mind that the rear of a tank often has the weakest armor). Finally, German troops zerg-rushed the tank and knocked it out by tossing grenades into its hatches once its main gun ran out of ammunition, but not before the tank's crew mowed down a whole bunch of them with the tank's mounted machine guns. The fact that the Germans ended up burying the Soviet crew with full military honors really hits home how fucking amazing it was that a single KV managed to hold out against such overwhelming odds for more than an entire day.

This is one of very few instances where a Warhammer entity cannot match up to its real-world counterpart in terms of how goddamn manly it is.

The Tank in Other Mediums
For those IG players who want a Ragnarok but don't want to kitbash it, Maxmini actually has a full kit for one here called the Gothic KV-2 Tank. Makes you wonder why Forge World, with the boner they have for the Death Korps, never made one themselves. For a cheaper option, Blood and Skulls Industry makes a big boxy KV-2/Ragnarok turret you can slap onto a Russ or Chimera chassis.

In vidya gaem news, the Ragnarok has been added to World of Tanks as a limited-edition premium KV-2 dressed-up in Valhallan Ice Warrior regalia. Go figure.
Come ride with me, Through the veins of history
Sydonian Dragoon (AKA Chicken Legs) are a light walker used by the Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii. The walker and its brother, the Ironstrider Ballistarius are noted as one of the coolest, classiest, and most elegantly designed vehicles of the Adeptus Mechanicus, despite the horrendously exposed cockpit of the pilot and the servitor. The Sydonian Dragoons act as the 'cavalry' of the Mechanicus and only the most elite of Skitarii are allowed to ride them. These chicken walkers are equipped with a near-perpetual motion engine called the aptly named Ironstrider Engine, which makes them a technological marvel (A rare sight in the Mechanicum), which in turn causes the laws of thermodynamics to bend over.

In battle, Sydonian Dragoons are equipped with either a Taser Lance or Radium Jezzail, however they are also able to be equipped with a Phosphor Serpenta, Broad Spectrum Data-Tether and a Searchlight. The fast and agile speed as well as its unnatural grace rivaling that of Eldar war machines makes the Dragoon great within medium to close range assaults. Any enemy foolish enough to get in the way of a rampaging Dragoon would be trampled into a fine, red pulp as the Dragoon's metallic claws/hoofs shred flesh from bone as easy as steel. Most Dragoons often act as shock troops meant to outflank enemy positions while causing chaos among orderly enemy ranks. Their Ironstrider brothers on the other hand, often scout the best available position in order to either pepper the enemy to death to relieve some pressure from the Dragoons or help take out important enemy leaders; cutting off the flow of information and collapsing entire armies.

Historically, the first Sydonians settled in a vast cratered area of Mars swathed in dense acidic mist (how Mars still has acidic mist despite being a cold, desert planet is left unknown, although industrialization during the colonization of Mars could be a major factor). In the schisms that haunted Mars's past, those with stilt-augmetics could stalk these mists and yet live, their elevation allowing them to escape the worst effects of the acidic fog whilst remaining hidden from the enemy. Thus the first prototype of the Sydonian Dragoon was born. Therefore the Sydonian Dragoons echo the tactics of these past dead warrior-explorers.

Like with most Mechanicus vehicles, the Sydonian Dragoon boast a distinct atompunk design.

If you aren't humming Muse almost constantly while playing these, you are doing it wrong.

Like its brother, the Sydonian Dragoon, the Ironstrider Ballistarius shares the same chicken leg design; however, unlike the Dragoon, the Ironstrider carries twin Autocannons or Lascannons, as well as downlinks providing the crew with the sum knowledge of their enemies, making it highly dangerous and efficient in eliminating important targets. These walkers travel along with their Skitarii Ranger brethren in search for high value targets. The Ironstrider's mechanized mounts are able to walk on the most hostile terrain, making it quick on uneven terrain even among other walkers. However, this makes the servitor driving the thing to be the first component to fail, if any other part of the fragile walker hasn't already been shot (or stabbed, or both). You would think the Mechanicus would spend some more time in making their slavebots more resistant to things such as corrosive gasses and water... *sigh*.....more Mechanicus incompetence.

When in battle, the role of the Ironstriders is to act as a mobile artillery platform, basically making it a Dragoon with more Dakka. Due to the Ranger gunner´s enhanced eye sight, it is the role of an Ironstrider Ballistarii to hunt down enemy commanders and spiritual leaders in order to sow chaos and confusion within enemy ranks. When not hunting for a particular space pope, an overgrown fungus or psychic Harry Potters, the Ironstriders form into groups called a Ironstrider Cavalier whose sole purpose is to shatter enemy formations. The quick speed, agility and firepower of the formation ensues that no enemy, even ones clad in Terminator armor, or a Super-heavy tank can emerge unscathed.

Additionally, Ironstriders are able to see things in slow motion due to the combination of the downlinks mixed in with an intravenous dump of hyperfocus stimulants which hype up the already augmented senses of the rider. This ability is what allows Ironstriders to hit with such accuracy and grace that could rival even the smug knife-ears and their own chicken walkers. Thus it is of no surprise that Ironstriders are favored among the Mechanicus forces when out hunting for potential acheo-tech or a new STC.

Just to add a bit more of a grimdark flavor to this radiation-baked chicken (like we don´t have enough Grimdarkness in this crapsack galaxy anyway), canon states that when the servitor steersman of the Ironstrider eventually bites it due to how much physical stress is forced upon it (not counting the multitudes of things that can and probably will kill it much earlier on the battlefield), the perpetual motion engine of the machine keeps the walker moving along on a perfectly straight line, heading to God-knows-where. Once a lackey of the Mechanicus manages to catch up with the thing, they toss out the (at this point) emaciated and decomposing corpse of the late servitor and install a new one like a fresh battery.
It is worth noting that the lore actually addresses how someone manages to perform such a challenging operation on a constantly-moving contraption; the Tech-Priest stands on a floating platform called a grav-bier which keeps him (or her) steady as the machine walks along.

The Basilisk Artillery Gun is the iconic Imperial Guard self-propelled artillery piece. It is based on the versatile Chimera chassis, and it carries a massive Earthshaker cannon. It dates at least as far back as the Great Crusade, where it was used by the artillery batteries of the Space Marine Legions and Imperial Army; though they were too slow for the slimmer, faster post-Codex Astartes Space Marines, they could move at just the right pace to keep up with an Imperial Guard siege operation.

Of course, given its tremendous range, it doesn't need to move very fast to keep pounding the enemy, and it's not supposed to be at the front line -- rather, the Basilisk crews get told where to shoot, they launch great quantities of shells in that direction, and then they move away before they get hit by counter-battery fire.

Variants
; Standard Pattern: You know'em, you love'em. The OG Basilisk with the famous gun shield. It is by far one of the most iconic vehicles from the Imperium of Man, let alone the Imperial Guard and stands equal with the Leman Russ Battle Tank, Baneblade, Land Raider and Rhino as most famous tank.
; Armageddon Pattern : Because Armageddon is a <s>desert world</s> irradiated, poisonous shithole, they developed a Basilisk pattern that fully enclosed the entire tank, sheltering the loading mechanism (and, coincidentally, the loader and gunner) from the harsh environment.
; Basilisk Magnus : A variant of the Basilisk fielded by Vance Motherfucking Stubbs, which seems to be dug into an immobile concrete position. It's like a regular Basilisk, except it can strike targets anywhere within the Imperial Dussala Precinct base, fires an absurdly powerful Earthshaker shell, and has styrofoam for armor. However along with the 100 Baneblades, Stubbs lost the targeting matrix for the thing and so it requires a spotter every time it shoots. Its size compared to the turret and crew suggest it would also be as well proportioned for mounting on a Macharius tank chassis as a normal Earthshaker is on a chimera chassis. Dis gon b gud.
; Legion Basilisk : Before the Codex Astartes reforms, the Space Marine Legions operated some artillery of their own, including the Basilisk. The gun shield and crew compartment looks beefier, and the engine exhausts run out the sides of the tank.
; Vanaheim Pattern : It's the same as the original Basilisk, with a less goofy-looking gun shield which offers additional protection for the gun crew from both the front and sides. Although its overall protection is not to the extent as that of the Armageddon Pattern or the Legion Basilisks.

Tabletop
The Basilisk's Earthshaker has the longest finite range of any Imperial Guard weapon (exceeded only by the infinite-range hunter-killer missile and Deathstrike missile, and the I.A. 300 inch range Manticore Missile, but apparently no-one ever includes those), able to drop an S9 AP3 large blast anywhere within 20 feet (which is pitifully small when scaled up to real-world dimensions...but so are all 40K weapon ranges). A single IG army can have up to nine of these monsters (three per Heavy Support slot, times three Heavy Support choices) for just over 1000 points, which will rapidly turn the entire field into a moonscape. It only gets worse in Apocalypse games, when the force organization chart limitations are lifted and units start getting vaporized from across the room.

In recent history, the Basilisk has been something of an awkward middle child between the powerful Manticore and the Infantry shredding Wyvern. The Manticore launcher will provide more destruction lb for lb if you just want to plonk 1 ordinance on the field, whilst mortars are far cheaper than the Earthshaker. In 8th, the Basilisk truly shines as it is meant to be played: in groups. An economy of scale with 3 of these boys will cost just over 300 points, but every turn you will destroy at the very worse a Leman Russ, and at the very best a Baneblade. The Basilsk must take a support role, aided with a Master of Ordinance and a cup of hot cocoa, to make your army suited to dealing with whatever your oppoenent may throw at you. MEQs, tanks and even terminators can not afford to scoff at a (2D6 pick highest) S9 AP-3 with D3 damage (just don't expect to wipe out blobs with a single one).

In Second Edition, where it first appeared, the Basilisk featured epic levels of bullshit since it rolled a D3 for damage to vehicles even if it didn't penetrate armour, and since the template usually hit every location on the vehicle it was statistically likely that anything hit by a Basilisk would be crippled or destroyed even if all AP rolls failed. Thanks to the preliminary barrage rule, it also got to fire a battle cannon round (somehow) before the game had actually started.

Thanks to the new "Emperors Wrath Artillery Company" out of the Mont'ka book, Basilisks can now accept Smite at Will (Split Fire), Suppressing Fire (Pinning), and Fire on My Target (IGNORES COVER) orders. All of these are hilarious under the right circumstances, but another special rule opens the door for truly unprecedented levels of Rape. Any unit with a vox can designate an enemy unit within 18" that has LOS. All attacks from artillery units within the formation are twin linked against that target. Deep striking Scion artillery spotters anyone?

Dawn of War
These babies were in Dawn of War 1 and BY THE EMPEROR they are awesome. They are one of the "must-get" units for the Imperial Guard faction because they make up for the Guards' shitty early game when they don't have more models and plasma gun upgrade, and they are one of the reasons people play IG (the others being THE BANEEEEEBLADE and the Commissar). They are best at blowing up infantry blobs and scattering them like frigging marbles for the Guardsmen to mop up. Most importantly, their Earthshaker round deals a fuck load of damage to ANYTHING.

Notable Basilisks
; Fluffy : The personal attack vehicle/pet of Commissar Dan. Being the retard that he is, he uses the thing as a front line assault tank instead of a full-time artillery piece.

Why A Basilisk is The Best Place To Be In The Whole Goddamn Imperium
* You're ten miles from the front lines and whatever fanged horrors or berserk supersoldiers are invading the Imperium this week.
* You get to fire a MASSIVE fucking gun and blow shit up. It's one of the best artillery weapons in the galaxy, able to mow down whole swathes of armies in minutes. Thus, the Tyranids' numerical superiority is irrelevant.
* If your regiment is commanded by Creed, you're one of a select few that knows how it is possible to deploy a dozen pieces of mobile artillery inside an impenetrable Ork stronghold.
* All the commissars (save one) are also at the front lines, seeing as that is where the business of executing cowa- erm upholding morale is most wanted.
* You can probably even get away with complaining about the High Lords of Terra and their general not giving a shit, seeing as there are no senior officers, no Inquisitors (since you're probably in a depopulated area far away from Inquisitorial interest), and no fucking commissBLAM
* You're not at risk of being blown up when your commander tells the artillery to shoot right in front of his own troops. Though you will probably hear their screams over your vox-unit, and any complaints about your orders will get you BLAM'med.
* Canon says you're going to go deaf, but whatever right? Hearing problems are the least grimdark thing in the entire setting. Or just stuff your ears with wads from your Uplifting Primer-BLAM
* Not just anybody can drive one of these, therefore you are not as expendable as other Guardsmen, and Commissars are less likely to shoot you if you start fleeing (which is frankly what you SHOULD do if the enemy comes close to your artBLAM
