One of the new had always been in the Background chapters, like being in the 3 war for Armageddon. Storm Giants Are Strong men of Astaras. The only thing really memorable about them is that they are one of the few chapters that might be Salamanders successors.
Legions
Among the Legiones Astartes, Brother-Captain was not confined to Company commanders, but also to special squad commanders. For example, the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus First Company maintained two special squads, the Justaerin Terminators and the Catulan Reavers, under the command of Falkus Kibre and Kalus Ekaddon, who were lauded and celebrated heroes of the XVI Legion, but still had to answer to Garviel Loken, who was a full Company Captain.
After the publication of the Codex Astartes and the breaking of the Legions into Chapters, Brother-Captains were confined to Company commanders. Each Captain was given an aspect of command over the Chapter. Alongside the leaders of the Librarium, Chaplaincy, Armory and Apothecarion, the Brother-Captains hold the positions of Masters of the Chapters. Here they both serve as a board of advisors to the Chapter Master and hold a variety of positions within the Chapter with associated duties. The ten positions for a Codex-compliant Chapter are as follows:

* The senior most of the Captains is the First Captain, who is Captain of the First Company and holds the title of Regent. In the time of the Legions, the First Captain was generally considered the very best warrior of the Legion after his Primarch. In "modern" Chapters, the First Captain commands the veterans of the Chapter, and serves as the immediate second-in-command to the Chapter Master and Regent of that Chapter's home world or fleet. In a few Chapters, such as the Salamanders and the Crimson Fists, the Chapter Master is also the First Captain. While theoretically any captain could wear terminator armour, because the First Captain is the one directly responsible for leading terminator squads, he is almost exclusively the one captain to bear terminator armour to battle.
* The Captain of the Second Company is the Master of the Watch. Charged with maintaining discipline, they serve as the prosecution during trials within the Chapter and handle other cases involving a lack in discipline but that are not quite heretical. Their main responsibility though lies in the logistics of defense for the chapter's Fortress-Monastery/main base of operations. In fleet bound chapters these responsibilities are often rolled into the title of Master of the Fleet.
* The Captain of the Third Company is the Master of the Arsenal. They oversee the Chapter's stockpile of weapons, munitions, vehicles of war and their quality. Likely works closely alongside the Master of the Forge.
* The Captain of the Fourth Company is the Master of the Fleet. They are charged with taking care of the Chapter's Fleet. It would seem logical that this position is more important in fleet-based Chapters, as the ships are even more important to the Chapter.
* The Captain of the Fifth Company is the Master of the Marches. They have the duty of overseeing the Chapter's deployment and fighting strength: when a Chapter is rebuilding for some reason they have the final say when the Chapter is ready. Their duties require an immense amount of time and effort; it is not uncommon for a Master of the Marches to spend all of his time on the incoming data, which does not seem like the thing a seven foot superhuman should spend his time on. (Except that a chapter-master wouldn't take the news that he needs to construct additional pylons before launching an assault from anyone other than a senior staff marine.)
* The Captain of the Sixth Company is the Master of the Rites. They perform and oversee the rites, rituals and other formal occasions inherent to the Chapter; as such their duty (and the size of it) differs between the various Chapters. In many cases, they work closely with the Chapter's Chaplains. The precise differences between Master of Rites and the Reclusiarch vary greatly between chapters, generally with both holding special significance under different spheres.
* The Captain of the Seventh Company is the Chief Victualler. They are tasked with maintaining the logistics within the Chapter and with outside forces: that the supplies that the Chapter cannot make for itself are procured and that there are enough rough materials for the things the Chapter can do. They also make sure that the various ships and bases of the Chapter have ample supplies. Synonymous with Quartermaster.
* The Captain of the Eight Company is the Lord Executioner. Unlike his brethren, the Lord Executioner serves as a weapon for the Chapter: to be bloody in battle and destroy the Chapter's enemies in close range.
* The Captain of the Ninth Company is the Master of Relics. Their duties are twofold: to tend to the various relics that the Chapter has and to engage in long-ranged warfare, both in sieges and firefights. Rumor that this duty also includes warding any and all Blood Ravens from the armory is unconfirmed.
* The Captain of the Tenth Company is the Master of the Recruits. They oversee the recruiting, indoctrination, training and deployment of the Chapter's Neophytes and Scouts.
Some Chapters use different names for their Captains. Unlike Chapter Masters these almost never have significant functional differences from the Codex standards, since their job of "commanding 100 marines" is fairly straightforward. For instance:
* Dark Angels - "Company Master"
* Space Wolves - "Lord" ("Jarl" in <s>Norse</s> Fenrisian)
* Red Scorpions - "Commander"
* Black Templars - "Marshal"
* Raven Guard - "Shadow Captain"
* Excoriators - "Corpus-Captain"
* Iron Hands - "Clan-Commander"
* Grey Knights - "Grand Master"
* White Scars - "Khan"

Also, the Crimson Fists 1st company is not led by a captain, but rather by the Chapter Master.

Tabletop
In Warhammer 40,000, Captains are sold to be customizable for the player to have the Captain serve whoever they want <s>unless it’s a smash captain</s>. However, it's overly expensive for something so fairly useless in its primary purposes: fighting and dueling. If you're going to use a Captain, use a Special Character.
Alternate take: Captains are more survivable than most other marine HQ's and fulfill the requirements for the demi-company formation. As such, there is cause enough to use them.

In 8th Edition captains have become much more viable with a useful aura ability which allows for re-roll hit rolls of 1s for your chapter units. This works for both ranged or CC oriented play styles and can work with different HQs, like the Ancient (for that retaliation) or the new Lieutenants (for making those 1 re-rolls hurt). Works even better with the new plasma mechanics, allowing those 1s to become a fail or hits instead of instant death.

Famous Brother Captains
Gabriel Angelos: Orginally Captain of the 3rd Company of the Blood Ravens. Gained his claim to fame from the Dawn of War series and later became its Chapter Master.

Cato Sicarius : *sigh* The esteemed Captain of the glorious 2nd Company of the Ultramarines, Master of CQC combat, reason of numerous victories for the Ultramarines and possible successor of Papa Smurf. Currently promoted to leader of the Victrix Guard.

I Can't Believe It's Not A Captain™
Some Chapters use different names for their Captains. Unlike Chapter Masters these almost never have significant functional differences from the Codex standards, since their job of "commanding 100 marines" is fairly straightforward. For instance:
* Dark Angels - "Company Master"
* Space Wolves - "Lord" ("Jarl" in <s>Norse</s> Fenrisian)
* Red Scorpions - "Commander"
* Black Templars - "Marshal"
* Raven Guard - "Shadow Captain"
* Excoriators - "Corpus-Captain"
* Iron Hands - "Clan-Commander"
* Grey Knights - "Grand Master"
* White Scars - "Khan"

Also, the Crimson Fists 1st company is not led by a captain, but rather by the Chapter Master.

Tabletop
In Warhammer 40,000, Captains are sold to be customizable for the player to have the Captain serve whoever they want.

Captain Titus : Brother Captain Titus, also of the Ultramarines, from the video game Space Marine.

See Also
* Primaris Captain
* Chaos Lord

The Octarius War is another recent hilarious and fail venture the Imperium of Man has made, though unusually the most catastrophic part was when the Imperium tried to not fight anymore.

The Imperial Guard were having their asses handed to them by the Orks on the planet Ghorala in the Octarius system. Former Lord Inquisitor Kryptman, leading expert on the Tyranids and prolific bastard, decided that the best solution would be to sic a recently captured swarm of Tyranids on the Orks, let the two fight it out, and mop up the remaining survivors with the IG. The obvious flaw in his plan of course is that both Nids and Orks are unwitting experts at bioengineering who thrive on war, meaning whoever ultimately wins will emerge much stronger than ever before (though hopefully if the Tyranids win they will be overspecialized ork killers and be weak to other threats and fighting styles). The conflict has predictably devolved into a massive meat grinder, where neither side has a clear shot at winning, and both are fucking loving it.

This tale is notable for being one of the few bits of fluff in the Nid 'dex where they don't get their arses handed to them by space communists, space elves, or fucking smurfs.

Never mind on the Eldar part, they're currently trying to clean up Kryptman's mess by bio-purging the front line and the worlds around it. Unfortunately, they missed the Overfiend of Octarius, who just managed to loot an Avatar of Khaine...fucccckkkkk.

Oh, and Ghazghkull himself is on his way there too so he can call up more boyz for Da Great WAAAAGH!!!! Score one for the Orks, it looks like. After arriving there and killing a mawloc from the inside out (eat your heart out, Alien), he's managed to take command of the Octarian orks.

With so much carnage and destruction going on, it was bound to attract the attention of the Ruinous Powers. In particular, a Khornate warband called the Skullhunt of Vodha Bloodprice attack the system, declaring a Blood Crusade. And their results are... mediocre, to say the least. In the CSM 8th ed. Codex, it says the khornates were able to offer "over <s>ni-</s>eight thousand skulls ... to the Blood God, the smallest of which is the size of a boulder" and that was enough to make Vodha Bloodprice ascend to Daemonhood. It seems small, but Vodha did managed to off a Hierophant Bio-Titan with a Warboss' salvaged axe, so lords know what crazy misadventures he got himself into, to merit princedom with a relatively small body-count (could've just been because they were 8,000 <s>unusually sized</s>fuckoff hueg skulls). They fucked off right after that, likely as they've already achieved their objective and the Indomitus Crusade was underway, so there were fresher pastures to drown in blood.

Since then, the worst-case scenario has gotten even worse. Ghazghkull rallied the Orks and repulsed most of the Tyranids from the system and is currently getting them ready for what he's planning as the biggest, baddest WAAAGH in history. The Tyranids, realizing that its a lost cause, has broken off from Octarius and attacking nearby worlds instead. At the end of the conflict, Kryptmann did two things. At best he bought the Imperium some time as the Tyranids are reeling from the conflict and the Orks are still gearing up, so there's still time to prepare for them. At worst, he just replaced the Tyranids with the Orks, as now the Orks are getting organized for a WAAAGH that could very well eclipse the devastation of the Tyranids once it gets started.

Now this brings up the question of 'Why blow the planets around the war to shit? Why not just carpet-bomb the Octarius system with Cyclonic Torpedoes and Virus Bombs? Considering Ghazghkull managed to largely eliminate the nids in Octarius, that would mean he brought a naval fleet powerful enough to rival a Tyranid Hive fleet, something the Imperium struggles to scrape up in the best of times. So if an Exterminatus fleet were to try and purge Octarius itself: they'd have to contend with splinter fleets and its shadow of the warp interference AND the bulk of a massive WAAAGH-ready naval fleet at the same time. This would take resources the Imperium currently can't afford to spare given how Chaos is currently banging on their battle-worn doors and Papa Smurf is too busy doing everything to keep them from breaking it down.

Basically, it's a lose, lose, lose situation for the Imperium. The only solution seems to revolve around buying time and cordoning off as much territory as possible---Whatever spews forth will be essentially be warp tainted Ork/Tyranid Hyrbids led by Ghazzy... Seems like they have started fucking off to nearby planets after the Great Rift was formed. Though most likely nothing will come of it, since GW decided to advance the plot a couple hundred years and the only way they can resolve the whole kerfuffle without fucking over their most popular factions is to quietly sweep it under the rug.
[[File:Official-Looted-Wagon.jpg|380px|right|thumb|The "official" model for the Looted Tank. Heresy at its finest
Wrong now were is The DAKKA]].
Looted items are equipment or vehicles that Orks have "appropriated" and "refurbished". They acquire this technology either as battlefield salvage or outright theft. Since other races' tech isn't very orky, the Orks make it so, welding and bolting pointy metal bits and pieces onto it.

Looting takes many forms, since any ork that sees something he likes in the hands of his foes (or friends) is liable to make him jealous, and a jealous ork has notoriously sticky fingers. This is so prevalent that an entire ork clan, the Deathskulls, are dedicated to looting (and jointly, engineering). Orks make constant use of looted guns, looted armor, looted ammunition, looted food, looted buildings, looted fuel, looted wealth, and of course looted vehicles. The Lootas are in fact just a bunch of thieving gits who managed to nick the best guns off of dead enemies, and bring them back to their Mek buddies to be rebuilt into shoulder-mounted gun platforms.

Orks being Orks have in the most extreme examples been known to loot more than an opposing factions armor. Indeed, the cooperation of Mekz and Painboyz has yielded virtually enslaved carnifexes. The results of which are quite spectacular, though like many Orkish endeavors, the chance for catastrophic failure is high. The limit to Ork looting lies only in the Orks creativity. Orks when given the ability will loot and convert technology and biology they have absolutely no understanding of (were talking lower than 'put da gun ova here!' low) and will cherish their maddening contraptions.

Looting also fills a very practically and functional portion of general Orkoid operations. With their battle planz typically being little more than overwhelming frontal assaults, successful attacks will provide vast amounts of easily accessible imperial material. This serves as a genuine means of stocking an army. Orks will turn to looting in anticipation of larger campaigns, often combining whatever they can acquire in hopes of creating the feared gargants.

Once an item or items have been looted, they must be orkified. This is essential. Ranged weaponry will typically be valued on the amount of noise it can generate, or perhaps the size of an explosion from a missile or energy bolt. Doubling rate of fire and bore diameter are universal upgrades to all weapons. Close combat weapons will be valued on their size; big and choppy is far more favorable than small and pokey. Unless it glows white hot and melts 'umies, that is certainly appropriate. Vehicles and other gear will be promptly painted red and festooned with oversized teef and all manner of spikes, boarding planks, gun buttresses, hooks, mean faces, and anything else that declares the vehicle the meanest thing in the damn galaxy, regardless of function. If an item has been looted from another Ork, the previous owners clan insignia must be immediately removed and the new owners brandishment applied. Then more red paint. Then more spikes.

Looted tanks used to be represented on the tabletop by allowing you to purchase vehicles from the Space Marines and Imperial Guard codices to use in your Ork army as long as you made the vehicle look like it had been modified by orks. From 3rd to 5th edition of Warhammer 40,000, the Looted Wagon was a staple part of any Ork army, able to bring armour and firepower to the table that other Ork units weren't able to provide. But since 7th edition, they have all but been removed, as GeeDubs becomes (somehow) even more hellbent on removing all ways in which players can enjoy their tabletop game.

The Looted Wagon
Looted Wagons are, in short, vehicles that have been stolen by Orks from people who know actually how to make them and subsequently been kitted out with all sorts of flashy bitz and gizmos.

This wasn't just a principle thing; the rulebook literally said that you had to make the vehicle look orky, so no Proxies allowed. However, the vehicle always had to make use of the Orks' Ballistic Skill 2 - no matter what codex the vehicle came from - at exactly the same price, so unless you had good luck, an ork-looted vehicle would lose to its non-looted equivalent in a firefight. You also had to deal with the risk of the vehicle breaking down at the beginning of the game on a D6 roll of 1.

Suffice to say, this was a ridiculously popular option, lowered the barrier of entry for army newcomers (because they could convert existing vehicles, leading to a lot of Imperial Guard or Marine players gradually building some token Ork forces), and made it way easier for Ork players to cover holes in the army they'd otherwise have, such as a general lack of heavy armor and stronger firepower - taking a Leman Russ Battle Tank or two was a good way to get heavy armor and firepower on the battlefield. It was so popular, in fact, that Dawn of War made Looted Leman Russes the dedicated Ork heavy vehicle, and Dawn of War 2 gave them looted Predator Tanks.

Unfortunately, like anything remotely popular in Warhammer 40,000's playerbase, it was inevitably ruined by GeeDubs. This particular rule change was especially loathed by players, as the very codex update that heralded this change (5th Edition) prominently featured a looted Basilisk in the Cityfight showcase in the same book. The upcoming ork Codex would remove the Looted vehicle rules entirely, with the only surviving example of it being the Looted Wagon, an overglorified Rhino with a more forgiving rule to represent it not being made by orks.

In the case of other vehicles, you would either have to have them count as a different vehicle in the ork codex, or more commonly be considered an allied unit, which opens up its own can of worms because the Ork ally list features only Chaos as a remotely viable ally - good news for that one maniac who made an orky Defiler; terrible news for pretty much everyone else.

The Looted Wagon Golden Days
In 3rd edition, the Looted Wagon was in its prime. Players could choose from any vehicle they liked from the list given, use its point value and all of its weapons just so long as they "converted it appropriately to show it is being used by orks" and played it using BS2. This was one of the very few times that GW has actually encouraged custom minis and creative approach, instead of the usual pay-to-win system. For more details on how it worked, see right.

The Death of the Looted Wagon
7th Edition is considered by many to be the death of the Looted Wagon. It was in this edition that the Wagon was removed from the Ork Codex, replaced instead by a two-page spread in an issue of White Dwarf as well as, for the first time, a picture of an actual miniature with it.

The rules it was given are as follows:

|| Pts || BS || F || S || R || HP
Looted Wagon || 37 || 2 || 11 || 11 || 10 || 3

Unit Type:
* Vehicle (Tank, Open-topped, Transport)

Unit Composition:
* 1 Looted Wagon

Special Rules:
* Don't Press Dat: Roll 1D6 for each looted wagon at the start of their Shooting phase. On the roll of a one, the Looted Wagon must move Flat Out, even if it performed a Tank Shock earlier in the turn.

Transport:
* Transport Capacity: Twelve Models
* Fire Points: If a Looted Wagon has the 'ard case upgrade it has three fire points, one on either side of the hull and one at the rear.
* Access Points: If a Looted Wagon has the 'ard case upgrade it has one access point at the rear.

Options:
*May take one of the following:
**Killkannon

*May take up to three of the following:
**Big Shoota
**Rokkit Launcha
**Skorcha

*May take any of the following:
**Deff Rolla
**'Ard case
**Grabbin' klaw

*May take items from the Orks Vehicle Equipment list.

This very boring and regular approach to the Looted Wagon ruined the fun of it. There was nothing to indicate how to make it work for custom miniatures. Good ol' GeeDubs just assumed everyone with a looted wagon made it out of a fucking Leman Russ.

The Death of the Looted Wagon II: Electric Boogaloo
<s>The shitheap that was the 7th edition Looted Wagon is universally hated. But at least we had one. As of 8th edition, the Looted Wagon is officially no longer in the game. GeeDubs reps on facebook have said you need to run your old models as Battlewagons. </s>

<span style='color:blue;font-size:120%'>Huzzah!</span> Chapter Approved 2018 has been confirmed to re-add rules for making Looted Wagons. Granted, they're only valid in Open Play but at least they're actually in the game. With Gunwagons making a long-awaited re-appearance, it may be the case that old Looted Wagons may be see the "official" battlefields once again, by proxying in for the Battlewagon's shootier cousin.

Dawn of War
Dawn of War saw the Looted Leman Russ as the Orks' primary artillery piece and high-tier battle tank, providing fire support to your other units, much the Basilisk does for the Guard. The only difference here being that Orks can have 4 Looted Leman Russes and Guard could only have 3 Basilisks.

Looted Everything
Due to how orks make technology work, there's nothing they can't loot. Orks players are known take any extra bits from any other faction and glue them onto their models (with varying degrees of success) in order to create the Orkiest miniatures they can. Any and every combination of armament and platform has been thought of at some point by Ork players, and probably kitbashed into existence as well. Orks with bolters? Easy. Orks with Tau Plasma Rifles? Too small, glue two together then we'll talk. Orks dual-wielding chain-axes? Already done, but don't tell your Khorne-player friend where you got them. Orks with Assault Cannons? They're called Lootas. Orks holding a Battle Cannon shell above their heads? Tankbustas. Orks with weapons from Fantasy? That's how life was in 2nd Edition! Orks with actual Battle Cannons? Maybe stick that one on a Wagon.

Orks have, in canon, looted entire Forge Worlds (like the infamous world of Tigrus) and turning them into giant factories producing everything from shoddy copies of Imperial gear and tanks to completely new weapons of wholly orkish design.
