}}

The Second Vetrovnak Incursion was an enormous war fought between the Vetrovnak and the Imperium of Mankind. During this bitter conflict, many Space Marine Chapters were destroyed outright and the Imperial Guard and Navy suffered tremendous losses. However, the emergence of the Sisters of Battle helped to turn the tide and repulse the invader.

Background
Following the Hektor Heresy, the Imperium of Mankind had driven back the Traitors and established a stable realm, though one far less prosperous and hopeful than the promise of the Great Crusade. Two centuries under the guidance of the remaining Primarchs stable borders were established and trans-stellar trade had begun anew. If Imperial culture was sliding away from the old Imperial Truth into religion, many of the new cults preached robust virtues such as blind loyalty to the Golden Throne and zealous opposition to the Imperium's enemies.

This new culture would be severely tested by the emergence of the Vetrovnak as an existential threat to the Imperium. Although the cream of the Imperial elite were aware of the events that came to be known as the First Vetrovnak incursion, scattered actions such as the Harvest of Ruawch were seen as unsettling mysteries rather than a pressing problem. But Hvar was well-aware of the weakened state of the Imperium and had built up its forces to launch a massive harvest operation.

The Invasion
The Vetrovnak onslaught caught Imperial planners entirely by surprise. Without warning, shadowy vessels began to attack Astropathic relay stations in a simultaneous effort that ranged across the two-third of the Galaxy. Although in some cases the courage of Imperial troops - invariably, Adeptus Astartes - was sufficient to protect these critical installations, contact with almost the entire Ultima Segmentum was lost. Pacificus, Tempestus and Obscurus also suffered communication problems, though messages could be re-routed through surviving stations. Only Segmentum Solar escaped the initial attacks unscathed. This omission that would cost the Vetrovnak in the days ahead, but did not deter the invader from their next target: the harvest of millions of Imperial citizens from near-defenseless Hive Worlds.

For a time, this onslaught seemed irresistible. Ultima Segmentum had fallen into anarchy and its surviving astropaths flooded the warp with cries of distress and confusion. Above this great psychic wail spiked the fearful cries of worlds falling to the Vetrovnak, and more substantial communication was hampered even in far-off Pacificus. Isolated Imperial forces attempted to conduct counter-attacks or fell back to what they believed to be strategic targets. Even the Space Marines seemed powerless to halt the invader. The Benefactors were overwhelmed and utterly destroyed as they fought to protect the Hive World Taitov. Their gene-brothers, The Puritans were lost in void battle in the Kiazuno system. Other chapters took heavy losses when confronted by Vetrovnak. The Infernals were driven collectively mad by their situation and reverted to a feral state. Some chapters even withdrew from Ultima Segmentum in disgrace. As their champions were destroyed or fell back, Imperial Guardsmen and Navy vessels either meekly submitted to captivity or were subdued by the children of Hvar.

Yet the nature of mankind is to struggle even when survival itself seems impossible. Ancient Fabrice Diallo, a Terran-born warrior who had once fought at the right hand of the Primarch Gaspard Lumey was summoned to Sol to lend his wisdom to the councils of war, but even as he travelled to humanity's cradle the depth of the crisis prompted more extreme measures. Diallo was accorded the rank of Martial Primaris, the first commander of the Imperium, and authorised to wield the full power of the Imperial war machine - a privilege that had not been accorded to any man since the days of the Primarchs.

Despite his advanced age, Diallo's response was energetic. He rallied the Space Marines to lead the fight by example, with chapters based in the untouched regions of Imperial Space summoned to bolster the ordinary men and women of the Imperial Guard and Navy. Fleet-based Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes were dispatched from the safety of Segmentum Solar to the Atalantos Worlds, there to form the sharp edge of the great Imperial war-blade. The first to arrive, Chapter Sigma, were given secret instructions by Inquisitor Vera Vinter and set off on a desperate mission to gather intelligence. Their valour at the Battle of Raman II went unknown for many years, but has since become an example to future generations.

Imperial counter-efforts

Thanks to the resourcefulness and self-sacrifice of Chapter Sigma, Vinter was able to counsel Fabrice Diallo on a method of counter-attack. Although the Vetrovnak weapons were terrible and their presence unnerved many ordinary Imperial Citizens, they could be beaten - and more importantly, they could be anticipated. Sigma's warriors had learned, at great cost, that the Vetrovnak's "folding drives" created minute distortions in the Warp, distortions that could be perceived by the Imperium's finest psykers. Despite shortages of Astropaths, Vinter commandeered Astropathic Choirs to scour the Galaxy for Vetrovnak movements and directed Imperial task forces to bring the enemy to battle. These efforts allowed Space Marines to begin moving against Vetrovnak Harvest Fleets and disrupting their activity. Encounters of this kind produced the mutual disaster of the Halven Incident, which was cheered by Imperials for at least causing the Vetrovnak some discomfort.

The Reformed Imperium did not intend for the Space Marines to fight alone. Preparations were made to deploy mortal soldiers in support of humanity's champions. But rather than dispatching a vast armada of Imperial Guard, the regiments of the Imperial centre were stripped of their elite formations to form so-called "Stormtrooper" detachments. These hardened cadres, equipped with gas masks to shield them from the first effects of Vetrovnak gas weapons formed the body of the Imperial counter-stroke. Joining these forces were a bold experiment. Inquisitor Vinter had noticed a common element in battle reports sifted from the chaos. Guard regiments raised from the Segmentum Obscurus, specifically those drawn from among Marian worlds had shown an astonishing resistance to Vetrovnak weaponry. While their brother and sister guardsmen generally succumbed to the frightful aura of the invader, or were quickly overwhelmed by their sophisticated weaponry, Marian guardswomen invariably had to be disarmed and overpowered- and even then, there were reports of these regiments beating back the bewildered Vetrovnak with cold steel and weight of numbers. Vinter couldn't explain the phenomena, but she believed that the Imperium needed to use it. Marian guardswomen who might otherwise have been formed into Stormtrooper units were instead given the best equipment available and doled out to task forces a special corps of shock troops, soon dubbed the Sisters of Battle.

Vinter's special forces would be blooded in the Second Vetrovnak Incursion, and performed admirably. The nascent Sisters of Battle achieved beyond anyone's wildest dreams. The Sisters proved to be not only a highly capable military force but one that was devastating to Vetrovnak morale. Yet the Imperials had hardly won their first substantial victory, bringing down an enemy carrier, when the invaders simply vanished from whence they came.

Aftermath
The withdrawal of the Vetrovnak was a great relief to the Imperial command and victory was duly proclaimed across the million worlds of the Imperium. However, within the highest circles it was well understood that the enemy had not been beaten. Either the Vetrovnak had sated their foul hungers or Imperial resistance had become enough of an irritant to make grasping for more imprudent. Few believed that the invaders would not return.

Fabrice Diallo retained his rank as Martial Primaris for a full solar year after the Vetrovnak vanished, using his great powers to put down rebellion and combat opportunistic Xenos, but when it became clear that the great menace had vanished he relinquished his authority to the High Lords of Terra and returned to Kouralia. In his wake, efforts were made to prevent a repeat of the same disasters that had paralyzed the Imperium. The High Lords of Terra endorsed Inquisitor Vinter's plan to establish a great army of Sisters of Battle. Every major communications hub across the broad Imperium would be home to a small, self-sustaining minor order - Ordo Minoris - tasked purely with the defence of the Astropathic relays. The High Lords also established the great Ordo Majoris, much larger armies with access to their own transport vessels intended to respond to emerging Vetrovnak threats. Armed with a new shield and sword, the masters of the Imperium vowed that they would never again be so humbled.

Fragmentation in the Ultima Segmentum

Although the High Lords of Terra were able to reassert their control of much of the Imperium, vast reaches of the Ultima Segmentum remained out of astropathic contact for decades. Sector Governors asserted their emergency powers and awaited the return of direction from Sol, but in some cases they died without ever hearing from humanity's cradle - whether by the action of foul Xenos or simply the rigours of time. Their successors began to believe that they were the ultimate authority in their own little empires, and launched petty wars against their neighbours to expand their dominion. In other sectors, the Adeptus Arbites exerted their power and set up Krytocratic regimes in which black-helmeted Arbitrators stalked the streets and ruthlessly punished the most minor infractions. (This trend found its most deranged and paranoid expression in Lord-Magistrate Eustace Fargo's Realm of Dread Justice.) Finally, the Ultima Segmentum was home to many semi-digested thrall-realms, previously independent star-faring governments that had sworn fealty to the Emperor during the Great Crusade but were quick to regain their sovereignty during the anarchy of the Incursion.
The Windcallers were an Institutorum Astartes-compliant Space Marine Chapter and a proud successor of the Scale Bearers from the Second Founding.

Chapter History
The Windcallers' rise and fall was as meteoric as they themselves, proving the adage that a candle burning twice as brightly will last half as long. Racing across the Imperium from hotspot to hotspot without rest or remorse, their honorable combat record was studded with dozens of honorifics earned on the Imperium's behalf. Indeed, some onlookers compared them favorably to the First Founding Legions themselves, and regarded the Windcallers as some of Tiran Osoros' truest, noblest sons. Sadly, this readiness to take up arms on the Emperor's behalf led them inexorably to disaster during the Second Vetrovnak Incursion, where they bravely, gallantly, boldly, but ultimately foolishly chose to clash with forces well in excess of what their Chapter could handle. Not a one survived the Incursion, and they are listed among the first to fall in the annals of Terra.

Notable Campaigns
Few records now remain of the Windcallers' deeds, and only a small box of Imperial commendations now resides on their gene-sire's homeworld in silent testament to their existence, along with the Chapter Master's shattered power armor. The era is simply too distant, and the predations of time too gluttonous to permit anything more. It is known that the Windcallers were feared by all the Imperium's foes, and that will have to suffice.

During the Second Vetrovnak Incursion, they fought gallantly and well, and perhaps they did ultimately buy the Imperium a few days or weeks more time to prepare as the mutants began their assault, but the truth will never truly be known.

Notable Members
Chapter Master Kasimer Arnevas is the only true Windcallers Marine whose name is still known to the Imperium, so thoroughly was his Chapter annhilated. Critically wounded, he was picked up by Imperial scouts aboard the crippled foredeck of the Chapter's Battle Barge Blessed Pinions, shattered and drifting through space. Surviving just long enough to pass along a few fragments of information about the Vetrovnak who had destroyed his Chapter, and a handful of carefully protected gene-seed vials, he was ultimately given a hero's funeral on Solnhofen many years later.

Chief Apothecary Tarn Othanam, seconded from the Scale Bearers Legion, was widely known as a masterful Sor breeder, and it was he who created the first Sors large enough to bear a single Marine and their battle-kit aloft as beasts of war. Crippled in battle during Sorfall and suffering from extensive neural rejection of his prostheses, Apothecary Othanam wrote extensively about feeling truly free only on Sor-back, and he sent hundreds of genetic samples taken from his creations back to the Founding Chapter for their review. In later years, the Scale Bearers would faintly regret the Apothecary's dedication to his reptilian charges, for his writings contained little information beyond them that could be used to trace the fallen Chapter's traces.

Master of the Fleet Bellero "the Steel-Head" Retzer, seconded from the Scale Bearers Legion, commanded the Blessed Pinions Battle Barge, presumably until its destruction at Vetrovnak hands. One of the few Scale Bearers to remain aboard the fleet while the Legion's main body evacuated, Bellero reaped a terrible toll on the Iron Rangers before succumbing to neural shock, having hastily slaved himself to his vessel in order to keep it fighting despite lacking most of the crew. Thinking the warrior dead, the Iron Rangers passed his shattered ship by, hunting for greater prey, but Bellero yet lived and was retrieved by Onyx's forces as they entered the system. Believing himself shamed by his failure to turn the tide for his Legion, Bellero requested immediate transfer to a Second Founding Chapter as soon as their creation was announced, and he stayed with the Windcallers till their last moments. Presumably, it was the Fleet Master's actions which saved his Chapter Master long enough to escape to friendly lines. The Scale Bearers knew Bellero Retzer as a man of diamond-hard willpower, and with the adamantium plates replacing his shattered skull, the "Steel-Head" moniker was not slow in arriving.

Chapter Combat Doctrine
The Windcallers fought as the flying Sors they so carefully bred from Solnhofen-derived stock, swirling about the battlefield as fluidly as drifting gusts of wind. Their hearts called them ever onwards and upwards, and perhaps no other Chapter of their era had quite the same instinctive "feel" for where they should position themselves in combat. Though limited in their heavy equipment, for the devastation of the Heresy still loomed large at their Founding, the Windcallers learned to make the most of everything they had, always seeking even the slightest weaknesses in their foe's battle plans to exploit. This strategy served the Chapter well when fighting Orks, Traitors, and other Xenos, but fell apart in the face of the well-coordinated Vetrovnak and their unnatural powers.

Chapter Beliefs
Inquisitorial Note: This document was preserved by the Chapter Master within his armor, evidently one of the Windcaller's most sacred rituals, and so important he deemed it vital that it be saved in case the Chapter were ever to be reborn. Most of these fragments appear to be from old tomes, but several hasty marks bear the Chapter Master's shaky hand, evidently written from memory in his dying agonies.

"To leave the bonds of earth and free one's body is to free one's mind as well. Nothing remains but the warrior instinct, laid bare by howling winds." This is the creed of the Windcaller, we who seek excellence through meditation and ascension.

The eternal winds forever roar through the vast Kolbrem Passage, separating one half of the Arpilium Range from the other as sharply as the Materium and Immaterium. Long ago, a rift began to develop beneath these massive peaks, but lacked the energy to split the continent apart and form a true ocean. Now it is a vast cleft in the rock, more than a hundred miles long and two miles wide, with an endless hurricane of energy pouring through. Here, we find our true selves. Here we open our minds to the world, and divine secrets found nowhere else. The fearful fall. The empty rise.

When the Astartes still unblooded, in shining silver armor fresh from forge's fire, newly stands before the Chapter his brothers, none shall yet deem him Windcaller. With courage alone he will soar, gravsled his steed and wit his only shield. Three brothers he shall follow, three brothers shall stand his vigil, three brothers shall welcome him back, in life or death as the winds will. Into the Kolbrem Passage he shall go, where the wind is fiercest and beast and bough dare not shelter. Bind sled to rock with chains adamant and soar aloft, ere twenty-three days elapse and the mighty moon of Pamtian revisit the warrior once more. Never shall his brothers cease to watch, to the left, to the right, and behind. Neither meat nor drink shall pass the warrior's lips until his test be fulfilled, and never may he slumber until soil be ground underfoot once more. No mortal teacher this, only nature itself and the lessons it holds. As the mighty Sor knows the endless skies by instinct alone, so must a Windcaller read the firmament and evade the earthly debris eternally blowing through the pass. To actually fall, the ultimate shame. None remember such a man, though Astartes by blood he became, a Windcaller by spirit he never shall be.

When the test is complete and he returns to earth, the Marine shall present himself before the Chapter, and we hold silent judgement upon his armor's sheen. The finest Marines with the best intuition prove themselves master of the wind, their armor gleaming even in the tempest's grip. Those less capable will bear plate dingy, pitted, and scuffed, but still we honor their courage and endurance. From that point forward, only those parts of the Marine's armor he protected during the challenge are kept pristine. As the other plates are damaged and replaced, the Marine must carefully scuff them to keep the original pattern his honor forged. Sacred honor, sacred augur, sacred portent of our futures. Would that we had read our coming doom in the marks. But even so... we would have gone forth.

Chapter Homeworld
The Chapter's homeworld is no longer known to Imperial Scholars, only that it had at least one large moon and an impressive set of geological features. It is believed that the planet came under assault during the Second Incursion, and multiple investigations have been launched over the millennia to find the Windcallers' remains and salvage any Second Founding-era equipment left behind, but the treasure trove within their Fortress-Monastery, if indeed any there ever was, has yet to be uncovered.

Neither eat nor drink shall pass the warrior's lips until his test be fulfilled, and never may he slumber until soil be ground underfoot once more.

Some of the best Jump Packs ever created by the Imperium were devised by this Chapter's artificers, able to lift a Marine higher and farther than almost any other.

Neither eat nor drink shall pass the warrior's lips until his test be fulfilled, and never may he slumber until soil be ground underfoot once more.

Some of the best Jump Packs ever created by the Imperium were devised by this Chapter's artificers, able to lift a Marine higher and farther than almost any other.

Chapter Appearance
Purest silver, dark grey scoring, and dull grey ceramite are the Windcallers' heraldry, preserving their honored traditions and way of life.

}}
