The Salamanders are one of the First Founding Space Marine Chapters in Warhammer 40,000. They are known for their love of flamer and melta weapons, preference for close-quarters combat, complete unwillingness to retreat or surrender and being fairly nice guys by space marine standards. They are also arguably the most shit-upon Chapter fluff-wise, besides the Lamenters, Raven Guard, and Iron Hands. The chapter is named after the mythological fire-lizard of the same name.

Salamanders in WH40K
The Salamanders is a Space Marine chapter based on the Death World Nocturne. Nocturne is a volcanic planet with some truly ridiculous shifting gravity. As such, its people developed a slow, methodical approach to life, coupled with a healthy respect/fetish for fire. Salamanders have somewhat slower reaction time compared to other Astartes (but still blindingly fast compared to humans). In the fluff, this is said to be a result of Salamanders being almost universally cautious and methodical in their thinking, rather than a geneseed malfunction. The planet's only other reason for continued settlement is its rich mineral deposits, making metalworking an important profession to the point of bordering on a priesthood. These traits carried over to the Salamanders, who are known amongst other things for fielding tough, hard-to-break units and for giving every man and his servo-skull a flamer or melta gun.(Put a couple of C'tan with the Lord of Fire power in your necron army for the lulz.) They are also well known for making almost all of their own equipment personally, with each man held responsible for making and maintaining his own wargear. They import the few things they cannot manufacture on their home world directly from the Adeptus Mechanicus, who likes them more than the ungrateful dicks who keep using up all their ammunition on drills and "practice fights". The rest of their wargear is made by the Chapter artificers and Techmarines and they produce some of the best armor and weapons of any marine chapter, because they're not busy repairing every scratch on the armor of the other 940 (1 Veteran Company, 6 Battle Companies, 1 Scout Company). The result is that each marine is equipped with practically master-crafted weapons and wears near-artificer level armor. For comparison, Artificer armor is basically equal to terminator armor in capabilities. Their entire chapter is like that.

The Salamanders
The Salamanders themselves are perhaps the most bro-tier of all Space Marine chapters, the Lamenters coming in a close second. They regularly act in thankless rearguard or civilian defense actions, as seen on Armageddon, and rather than spend their free time in their super-awesome orbital fortress monastery, they hang out on the planet's surface chilling with the locals, many actually living normal lives among the people as chieftains, teachers, guardians, or simply wandering the planet as hermits when not on active combat duty.

In terms of tactics, the Salamanders are one of the simpler chapters; "Wait for it...", "Burn that shit", and "Never say die" are about the sum of their tactics. The number of heat-based weapons they can field is truly alarming, as is a certain special character of theirs who can make them all twin-linked. The fact that each man repairs and maintains his own armor ensures that their chapter Artificers can be free to make truly awesome stuff. They field almost exclusively treaded vehicles, as the gravitic antics of Nocturne's moon Prometheus (really more of a planet) tend to cause anti-grav plating to freak the fuck out.

Of course, if you ask a fa/tg/uy what comes to mind first when they hear the word "Salamanders," you're likely to be answered with a racial slur, gangsta rap and/or a number of pictures showing fried chicken. These ogryns deserve a . This is because, due to genetic radiation protection, all Salamanders are black. We're not talking coal black or African-descent black (though before receiving their geneseed the warriors of Nocturne are dark-skinned), we're talking blackhole pitch black, hexadecimal code #000000, the missing word in the phrase "...as the void of space." That kind of black. With glowing red eyes. In addition to those mutations their geneseed also gives them an abnormally hardy constitution, even for a space marine. The Salamanders are much more resistant to radiation and cellular damage than other space marine chapters. This is likely a perk of having a perpetual primarch, though it may just be one of the quirks coded into their geneseed by the Emperor.

And if that wasn't enough, the ally matrix in ForgeWorld's Horus Heresy spinoff demonstrates that the Salamanders were the most liked of all the legions. Seriously, the only factions rivaling them for good ties are the Imperial army and the Mechanicum (whom everyone kisses up to anyway). Hilariously, one of the 3 chapters they dislike (though not enough to put them on red terms with anyone) are the Ultramarines. They weren't fans of the Word Bearers either, even before the whole Heresy and ritual murder-torture thing.

Vulkan's Legacy
According to the Salamander's legends, Vulkan left nine FUCKAWESOMEAMAZEBALLS relics scattered across the galaxy as a sort of scavenger hunt for his sons. If you believe the stories, when the Salamanders find all nine relics their primarch will return to lead them into a glorious future where the Emperor's enemies will be slain and the Imperium will return to glory and the children of Nocturne will all find flamers and meltas under their pillows, yadda yadda. Of the nine relics the Salamanders have found five. The first three are carried into battle by the Master of the Forge: the Spear of Vulcan (a master crafted relic flaming spear that can burn through ceramite or adamantium), Kesare's Mantle (a cloak of adamantium and scales that offers the same protection as a storm shield), the Gauntlet of the Forge (a bitchin glove that can spew fire better than a heavy flamer). The last two stay at home: the Eye of Vulcan, a FUCKME huge goddamn laser defense array that can one shot a battle barge, and the Forge Ship Chalice of Fire whose industrial output can supply the salamander's ENTIRE CHAPTER and then some. The remaining four relics are called the Engine of Woes, the Obsidian Chariot, the Unbound Flame (Some believe to be Vulkan himself) and the Song of Entropy.

Organization
Unlike many followers of the Codex Astartes, the Salamanders have actually adopted a different organization for their army: the Salamanders organize themselves in Great Companies rather than the typical codex companies, with 6 companies of 120+ warriors each in addition to a smaller scout "company" of roughly 60 men and their officers. Of the six companies, the first is a veteran company, the second through fourth are battle companies, and the fifth and sixth are reserve companies.

Daily Rituals of a Salamander
The daily rituals of the Salamanders take noticeably longer than other Chapters due to Nocturnean pragmatism...and the times are due to...well...you know...
* 12:00: "Morning" Prayer: The Salamanders are roused to begin the day with a few litanies from the Promethean Cult.
* 13:00: "Morning" Firing Rituals: The Salamanders practice their firing skills. Usually using flamers or meltaguns instead of bolters.
* 15:00: Battle practice: The Salamanders descend to the practice cages. Cages have usually been repaired from all the burn damage from the previous day by that point.
* 18:00: Hammer time: The Salamanders take to the maintenance of their wargear while also forging new weapons and armor.
* 20:00: "Midday" meal: A light meal prepared by the chapter serfs is consumed. Carolina Reaper peppers are usually a component of this, Habaneros are employed for occasions when the Salamanders might prefer something on the milder side (which is never).
* 21:00: Pimping of the Rides: The Rhinos, Land Raiders, and Predators are pimped out with sufficient bling.
* 22:00: "Afternoon" Firing Rituals: The Salamanders again take to practicing their firing skills. Again using flamers and meltaguns instead of bolters.
* 00:00: "Evening" meal: A feast prepared by the Chapter serfs is consumed. The meal usually consists of an ancient Terran fruit called a "Watermelon" and a helping of a certain flightless, avian animal, fried to a crisp. Beverages usually consist of a ancient Terran form of malt liquor called "Old English" or just "Ol' E". On special occasions they may even break out an ancient carbonated drink referred to "Cristal".
* 01:00: Free time: The Salamanders are given free time from their duties. Some reflect on their duty to the Emperor. Others go and chill with the folks in the Sanctuary Cities on Nocturne or compulsively forge new suits of artificer armor.
* 04:00: Lights out: The Salamanders retire for the "evening".

Armageddon is an Imperial Hive World in the Segmentum Solar. It is one of the most well-known hive worlds in the galaxy, with an industrial output surpassing that of many forge worlds. As it supplies dozens of worlds with materials and protection, Armageddon is a strategically vital world and is heavily garrisoned. Climate-wise, Armageddon is an ash-filled poluted hellhole. On the main continent there is little more than ash filled deserts, though it's southern regions and the secondary continent have jungles. It is home to the Steel Legion, one of the most recognized Imperial Guard Regiments in the galaxy and Armageddon was also the location of some of the largest wars in the history of the galaxy, including the Third War for Armageddon which was the largest land and space battle in the history of the Imperium of man. Notably it was also the largest gathering of Space Marine ships in history, including during the Siege of Terra or the Ullanor Crusade.

First War for Armageddon
The Beginning

The first war for Armageddon began with a series of Chaos rebellions in the hive populous as the demon space hulk Devourer of Souls came out of the warp above the planet. Much of the World Eaters chaos space marine legion was aboard the hulk, and they made planetfall amid the bloody rebellions, slaughtering all resistance on the main continent. Realizing that the main hives were lost, what was left of the loyalist populations on armageddon retreated to the smaller continent across the sea to regroup and resupply at the small military bases and outposts located there. For a few short weeks while the Khornate hordes busied themselves with sacrificing civilians to summon daemons to bolster their ranks, and the Loyalists used this time to fortify as well as they could, but they had little more to offer their foes than flashlights and insults. As the Blood God's hordes turned their eyes to the last defenders, now bolstered by daemons and the Daemon Primarch Angron himself. The ragged refugees and soldiers could do little more than pray for deliverance when...

The Cavalry Arrives

Out of the fucking blue with no real lore explanation the Vlka Fenryka showed up, led by the Old Wolf himself! The wolves blasted the fuck out of the Devourer of Souls and made planetfall to help the remaining Planetary Defense Force and Steel Legion forces defend the remaining civilians while they awaited the help that Logan had called for. After months of bloody battle, the Grey Knights fucking finally showed up to the party. This 'ragged brotherhood' fought Angron and his retinue of Bloodthirsters and won when their brotherhood's Grandmaster was able to banish Angron after Hyperion shattered the daemon Primarch's blade. Of the 109 Grey Knights who took to the field, 13 survived.

The Months of Shame

Following Angron's banishment the Wolves and Steel Legion were able to destroy the few Khornate forces that remained. Given that the whole planet had been contaminated by chaos, and by the sanction of an inquisitor lord the remaining population of Armageddon, civilians and soldiers alike, were to be sterilized and sent to inquisitorial compounds to be worked to death, and any space wolves who had seen the Grey Knights were to be mindwiped, save for Grimnar. The space wolves were not fucking amused. Logan politely and calmly explained to the inquisitor that by punishing the citizens of Armageddon for their heroism and survival, the inquisition were sullying the honor of the men that yet lived and disrespecting the memories of the dead. The inquisitor more or less told Logan to go fuck himself. The Old Wolf was not amused. Shortly after this exchange the refugees and soldier survivors started to mysteriously "disappear" from inquisitorial custody. The inquisition pretty quickly figured out was up and called the wolves to explain their deeds, but they weren't feeling talkative. The inquisition began firing on any civilian craft leaving the planet, including the ones escorted by the space wolves who blocked the inquisitorial fire, first with their void shields and then with the hulls of their ships, but never fired back. After months of tense standoffs and passive resistance against the inquisition, the Space Wolves finally got sick of the inquisiiton's shit when they destroyed the relic Battle Barge Scramsaex and the space vikings started shooting back. Evidently the inquisitor lord thought it was a good idea to be in a void war with Logan Grimnar a dude who can call on EIGHT battle barges and FUCKING THIRTY strike cruisers. He was wrong.

The End

After months of the inquisition getting its ass kicked the Inquisitor finally called on every resource he could muster and set off to Fenris with an entire Imperial Navy fleet, a Grey Knights strike cruiser and the entire Red Hunters chapter fleet. To make a long story short the wolves lost some ships and some men, the inquisition lost a lot of ships and men, and everything ended with Logan Grimnar teleported onto the Grey Knight's strike Cruiser, killed the inquisitor and Grandmaster, and threw Hyperion a beating, but was forced to stand down when Bjorn teleported up into the party and had what is quite possibly the single most "Bjorn" moment ever. Not only did he tell the inquisition to get off his damn lawn, not only did he tell Logan to quit making so much damn noise with his out-of-hand party, Bjorn actually came onto a Fenrisian inquisitor, calling her a "beautiful frost-born maiden" (or some other flowery shit, it's been a couple years since I read The Emperor's Gift, okay?) revealing himself to be a krachety old romantic neckbeard. Everyone was pretty fucking dumbfounded, and the inquisitor was dead, so everybody pretty much went their own way.

TLDR: Wolves fought the insquistors, it was a draw.

Second War for Armageddon
To make a short story even shorter, the Second War for Armageddon was a massive fucking meatgrinder full of happy orks and pissed off humans. Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka arrived on the planet with a bunch of Roks and a few billion Orks and decided to make things more interesting. The local PDF's big cheese was a fucker by the name of Herman von Strab, though he sucked at his job so Commissar Yarrick, the Old Man himself, took over and started getting shit done. Yarrick managed to hold things together with his half-whipped and half-starved forces until the marines arrived to help out. Commander Dante arrives with a taskforce to finish the fight. Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka fucked off to space. Kinda like WWI, all this war did was set the scene for the big war that came after, which brings us to...

Third War for Armageddon
The third war for Armageddon was the biggest land war in the history of the Imperium and the galaxy's mosh pit. FUCKING EVERYONE was there. Well. All the orks and humans anyway. Seriously, all 9 former SM legions were there along with a lot of successors, there were a dozen titan legions and a metric fuckton of guard regiments, along with a few billion orks. There were more Void Ships and ground forces at the third war for Armageddon than any other war in the history of mankind, surpassing even the Siege of Holy Terra and the Ullanor Crusade (though this has been partially retconned by our overlords). Commanding this clusterfuck you had High Marshal Helbrecht in charge of the Void Battle, as the Templars are void specialists and Commissar Yarrick in overall command on the ground (says a lot about how hardcore Yarrick is that even the Astartes were willing to take orders from this guy). Short story shorter Ghazghkull was annoyed that he had to fuck off to space last time, so he came back with even MORE orks to come back and get Yarrick, though this time the Imperium was prepared and eventually won. Ghazghkull fucked off to space again, with Yarrick joining the Templars on an epic roadtrip to go smite the green fucker. Helbrecht had intended to build Armageddon as a bastion of Imperial might, including having several space fleets that would allow the Imperium to attack and reclaim planets that they had lost, but as soon as he and Yarrick left the lazy fuckers left in charge just did what they had done before the Ork invasion, fuck all and hope nothing happens. Then GW realized that they were terrified of story progression, so this victory was retconned away.

Ulrik the Slayer, also known as Grandfather Lupus or the Guardian of the Sons of Russ, is the Wolf High Priest of the Space Wolves Chapter and an absolute badass. He is so badass that he beat these crazy murderous motherfuckers in melee. With his HANDS. Yeah. That badass. He's basically that really awesome teacher who gets you through that really hard GCSE with an A*. In power armour. Wielding a plasma pistol. He was in fact so good at it that Angron himself saluted him. You know you are one awesome badass if one of the Daemon Primarchs pays respect to you for how killy you are.
Ulrik first entered the history books when he was in the Wolf Guard of Lord Kruger (not THAT Lord Kruger, though it is entirely possible he had claws), and fought with him during the First (of a shitload) War of Armageddon. After Lord Kruger was slain Ulrik fought against the World Eaters like a boss, ripped them to shreds and shat on their corpses, and was offered with a promotion to Wolf Lord. But he decided to take an early retirement from fighting to teach as a Wolf Priest, teaching this well-known face around the Aett in the Noble Art of Getting Shit Done as a result he's the only person allowed to teach Logan Grimnar like a youngster. He has done the same for countless other members of the Space Wolves, and will continue to until he dies.

Then he'll become a dreadnought and chill with his homeboy.

Canon Conflicts
Recent lore has put forth that Ulrik has Chosen and mentored many of the chapter's greatest heroes including Logan Grimnar and Ragnar Blackmane. By GW's own timeline this is impossible because by the time Ulrik was promoted to the rank of Wolf Priest Grimnar was already the Chapter Master. Additionally, In the novels written by William King the Wolf Priest who Chose Ragnar was named Ranek. Not much more to say here. Somebody made a cool priest character without looking at the lore first. They done fucked it up. Nothing further to say.

On the tabletop Ulrik is a slightly killier chaplain than typical. He has a cool hat. Like every wolf he has ATSKNF and acute senses, plus Fear, Fearless, counterattack, independent character, and the Slayer's Oath which gives him and all friendly wolves within 6" preferred enemy.

For gear he has Crozius Arcanium, a plasma pistol, power armor and a wolf amulet (4++ invuln), frag and krak grenades, healing balms (grants his unit FNP 6+), and his Shiny Hat of Wolfiness that gives every wolf within 12" stubborn.

Stick him in a group of puppies or Wolf Guard. He'll make them tougher and killier and with luck he'll do some damage himself. He's not much more expensive than a vanilla Wolf Lord, so it's hard to go wrong with him.
