BOO!"

The Night Lords Space Marine Legion consists of some of the more batshit(HA!)-crazy emos, kind of like the Chaos version of the Raven Guard. They get off to catching their enemies, skinning them alive and crucifying them, all the while recording it for later. Also notable for having a strong vampire motif and playing too much Mortal Kombat; they're scary creatures that live in the dark but scorn the Chaos Gods, much like the Vampire Counts. Their backstory is surprisingly compelling and deep (Just one step behind of senseless Edgy wank), but they are nevertheless bitter, brutal, terrifying assholes whose battle cries include "We have come for you!" or "Ave Dominus Nox" (translated as "Hail the Lord of the Night").

History
Their Primarch called himself the Night Haunter (his IRL name was Konrad Curze). When Chaos abducted the infant Primarchs, they were scattered across the galaxy. Poor lil Konrad ended up on Nostramo, a world of perpetual darkness. And unlike the other Primarchs who were found by the inhabitants of a planet and taken care of, Konrad was left all alone to fend for himself, in a world that was a dark, lawless land. But who's to say it would've been better? So then he grew up, he became like the Batman of the 31st millennium, where he punished the corrupt and the evil. Only the difference from Batman is that he did it in the most gruesome manner possible, such as by hanging the guilty person's disemboweled corpse for all to see or beating the person to literally an unrecognizable pulp, to the point the sewers were clogged with bodies. Strangely enough, this was actually considered an improvement. So yeah, he became such a popular icon that the people of Nostramo basically fixed their shitty society because they feared that the "Night Haunter" would screw their asses to unimaginable levels, thus making him Vlad the Impaler IN SPESS!!! It says something about his world that, even as Vlad the Impaler, he was still clearly quite the good guy.

Curze tried to be a good leader for his people, but there was one thing he was just unable to do: delegate. So when Big.E came rolling by and took him along for a good scrap all over the galaxy, it didn't take long for Nostramo to fall back into crime, anarchy and the like. With the scary thing in the night gone kicking ass AnywhereButHere, it suddenly wasn't scary anymore. Insult to injury, Nostramo provided most aspirants for the Night Lords, and soon only those that thrived in such a lawless environment ascended to become Space Marines... with all the complications one could imagine. Despite the psycho-indoctrination, many Night Lords were serial-killers and sociopaths, hiding their bloodlust beneath a thin veneer of loyalty to the Crusade, and this rot slowly but surely spread to the Legion as a whole.

They also have an unhealthy addiction to flying and lightning. Known for scaring the hell out of civilians for shits and giggles. They are also known for being insanely giant fucking nutheads. Wherever the Night Lords strike, they leave corpses and signs of their assault on display and generally make it look like all the Segmentum's worst metal bands had a gig in the exact same area at the exact same time.

Despite being "traitors" they claim not to be terribly fond of the Chaos Gods and make little to no use of daemons, so they're more of a renegade legion than an unclean one. Which makes them less likely to (accidentally) become possessed. It won't matter though, because they are fucking insane anyway, not only because of their combat doctrines, but also because they have been around for a very long time.
Notable exceptions include Krieg Acerbus, a Daemon Prince currently leading the largest warband of Night Lords, who also happen to be hardcore, full-on batshit chaos worshippers. There's also the first claw's Uzas, who's all about blood for the Blood God. In fact, earlier incarnations of the background listed them as a Khornate Legion, and Khorne smiles upon those who murder for the sake of murder, even one's allies, which Night Lords do whenever they can. However, because they're in denial about their religion, they neither get the goodies of the Chaos Gods, nor the technology of the Imperium. So whenever loyalists show up with assault cannons, stormbolters, cyclone missile launchers, land speeders, drop-pods, and hunter killer missiles they silently cry in the night. Or take it out on them by kicking the shit out of the local chapter of Ultramarines.

Tactics
Night Lord warbands, for the most part, are somewhat sensible in that they don't just send in their marines to die in droves. So they generally don't titty-rush the nearest Titan for the lulz unless said Titan is REALLY fucking their mojo up. When they do engage in direct combat, they generally prefer complete overwhelming force to ensure minimal losses, maximum carnage, and enough skulls to stick on their pauldrons. So they're pretty much a chaos version of Reasonable Marines. Including the Alpha Legion too, obviously (maybe?).

ALTERNATIVELY:

They make use of their sneakiness and fuck shit up that way. Striking behind enemy lines, ambushes, sabotaging generators and command centers, etc. Knowing this, one considers them being pretty sensible. In one-on-one combat a Night Lord will do his best to make sure he has the upper hand, and thus resort to cheat tactics by breaking every rule possible and use every dirty trick to avoid being 'on equal footing' with the opponent. Just like certain slimy BDSM pricks.

They like unconventional shock-and-awe tactics (read: Terror with a capital T). One of them, Talos, disabled a ship's bridge by doing a fifteen-second-long vox-amplified scream, which, thanks to his three lungs and super-humanly strong vocal chords, blew out every unprotected eardrum in the room and put many of the bridge staff in a coma. Another method was to kill a planet's population from fright when they broadcasted a horrible snuff movie over the comm waves. More methods include impaling innocents in hard-to-reach areas and spamming the local Internet (or whatever passes for it) with video broadcasts made of extremely scary jumpscares, torture footage and sounds, sort of a superhuman Los Zetas/ISIS/Internet Troll hybrid on crack.

If they can't use fear as a tactic, they will always resort to trying to break morale by sabotaging objectives of strategic import or executing leaders and commanders.

BUT:

This isn't to say that their tactics make them unstoppable. Terror-tactics only work well on people who can be scared, meaning that their preferred operations tend not to work well on other Space Marines, Eldar, Necrons, Tyranids, Orks, or any sort of fanatical religious zealots, meaning that Imperial Guard are one of their favorite targets. If anything, their big saving grace is they're competent enough to leg it when a fight isn't winnable.

Especially noteworthy is that the last time they really had to fight face-to-face, mano-a-mano, was right after the Heresy, when the Toilet Marines came looking for them on their fortress world of Tsagualsa. The Night Lords got slaughtered. Now, to be fair, by that time it was a while since they replenished their numbers after the Heresy. Additionally, in their stupidity, they chose to "bunker down" instead of using their typical hit-and-run tactics. Not to mention the fact that many warbands were not present, the Legion having started to split up after the death of Konrad and Sevatar. Also, the character recounting this, when challenged by another about "losing to the Ultramarines", points out that it wasn't JUST the Ultramarines chapter, but every successor chapter as well. He comments on Howling Griffons working side-by-side by Novamarines, while being supported by Genesis Chapter flanking maneuvers. He comments on how every single chapter involved was running by the same playbook (The Codex Astartes), in perfect unison, and pretty much without any dissension or rebellion (unlike the Night Lords). The result was that the Night Lords were pinned down, outflanked, bombarded, assaulted (or counter-assaulted), besieged and simply fucked over in every way in a textbook fashion. The Night Lords lost so badly that they fragmented, and were never united as a whole force ever again (although there were signs of a semi-reunification in the period leading up to the 13th Black Crusade). And before you cry some "Wardian bullshit", this was in the Night Lords own book, written by a pretty cool guy (actually it was Games-Workshop's fluff that limited the Night Lords.). Besides, against a legion fighting in co-ordination it was a given who would win, not bullshit. Notice the Codex Astartes clearly works well...when working with at least a thousand Marines or multiple Chapters together (as opposed to individual companies...something Astartes are largely too stupid to realize, apparently).

Bear in mind that upon returning to this fortress planet, the Night Lords proceeded to get revenge on the Ultramarine Genesis Chapter, defeating them with the time honored strategy of blowing up the fucking moon. Why fight fair when you have nukes?

Huron Blackheart worked out the best way to use the Night Lords: as an advance force for performing a crippling first strike on the enemy. When he assaulted the Marines-Errant in their home base, he asked for a detachment of Night Lords to find a way to let his main force into the Marines-Errant fortress. So a squad of Night Lords scaled into the fortress-monastery and drew off the Marines-errant and their serfs while a squad of Night Lords raptors went higher up the fortress and destroyed the actual shield generators.
So you offer them something they want, tell them what to fuck up, let them work out the details on their own and do their thing and, as Huron found out, don't expect them to help much in the actual fighting afterward (which to be fair Huron neither expected nor wanted) nor should you leave any shiny toys for them to elope with while you're busy (now that dit piss Huron off! Royally!).

Fun Facts
*It is believed they're linked to Scary Marines.
*They are one of the few Astartes legions who actually think ambushing is a good idea, rather than standing in front of a line of guns and charging it.
*NANANANANANANANANANANANANA BATMAN!
*Kids check under their beds for the boogie man, first company captains check under their beds for the night haunter
*Konrad Curze IS that thing that goes bump in the night...and he's heading this way
*The Night Lords know all of the things you're afraid of, and they think they are utter shit, wait til they show you what true horror is
*The first most brutal hour of any attack by the Night Lords against is more commonly called thee "Candlyand Hour" for all good children...those poor children
*The Night Lords once discovered records of an ancient Terran mythological figure called "Santa Claus". Reading about this fat jolly man, they couldn't help but be both amused and annoyed with his jovial antics, they were impressed with his ability to get into any habitation block, no matter how well fortified(and assumed warp trickery was at play)his army of slaves in his polar fortress and they greatly admired his almost Orwellian list of "naughty and nice" but couldn't really understand the whole gift giving thing, good children don't get presents, they get the greatest gift of all! They get to live! Bad children... will be made an example of in the style of the Night Haunter and his criminal mob bosses. We'll see who's naughty and nice then
*The Night Haunter used to keep a record of who's naughty and who was nice... and then severely punish those kids who were naughty (Hint it involved disemboweling) today, his sons don't keep a record. they just disembowel whoever might be in the vicinity, naughty or niceness be damned.
*Upon reading about this 'Santa Claus' figure most Night Lords assumed he used some sort of jetbike or skimmer to get around furthermore upon discovering that bad children get "lumps of coal" for their bad behavior in their stockings, the night lords hit upon a great idea, once a year they would deliver coal to all the children on a particular imperial world because, "They are bad and thus must be vindicated", coal themed terrorism was rampant, in what was known as "Ash Thursday" or the Night of 1000 Sorrows, the Night Lords proceeded to unleash a planet wide coal themed reign of terror upon a hapless imperial world, coal was shoved in their stockings...and in their throats...then they were set upon fire, the local Mechanicus weather machine was set ablaze making it rain ash, various coal trucks were detonated raining coal onto hapless imperial citizens, local water purification centers were destroyed (hint coal is used for cleaning) and countless Adeptus Mechanicus kidney dialysis machines were smashed.
Then they set the weather machine to "snow" and took all the coal back into space so they'd freeze in their habitation blocks and let a note that said "next Sanguinala be a little nicer"
*Nostramo is described as being like Gotham City, if Gotham City had no lights, there was another Gotham City on top of that, and only mob bosses and rich scumbags got to enjoy sunlight and medicine and everyone had guns and Batman ate his victims. Oh did we mention the Night Haunter was so bad he made everyone "nice"? Yeah. Curze killed so fucking many criminals that the survivors were too scared to do crime anymore. At least until Curze left the planet.
*They stick bats in their helmets to help them fly.
*They don't get Daemons or other warp dickery. So they always go to sleep with ease without all the voices in their heads (other than their own psychotic subconsciousness).
* Aaron Dembski-Bowden (AKA the newest edition to the Bald Brotherhood of Awesome 40K Writers) has made them fucking GREAT. 10th Company GETS SHIT DONE!
*When the Word Bearers, Iron Warriors, the Alpha Legion, or Black Legion (the only four legions that really give two shits about Chaos Undivided, and even then the Iron Warriors aren't the biggest fans of it and the Alpha Legion are closet loyalists(or are they really?)) try to recruit them for their next great Black Crusade, the Night Lords usually tell them to piss off and send the messengers back in a box(or several).
*They are also the origin of the Raptor and Warp Talon units, the Chaos version of assault marines.
*They're probably lucky that those other legions are typically too busy to deal with probably the least threatening of the Chaos Space Marine Legions.
*They are probably as old as you could normally count, because they don't hang around in the Warp so much. Sort of. The Aaron Dembski-Bowden Night Lords book mentions Talos remembering the defeat at Terra as being only a few decades from his perspective due to chilling in the Warp. He does mention his bestie is getting crows feet though from time outside of the warp.
*That's not to say that the Night Lords aren't pants shittingly terrifying. They know what they're good at and they stick to it.
*They've had enough common sense to survive for this long, despite having so many disadvantages compared to the other eight legions.
*Of course, this is relative, because when we talk about "sensible" in the context of Chaos, we mean "will hang you with your own intestines just for the hilarity of it", rather than "completely ignore the enemy army to attack a strategically worthless town to make sacrifices for the Dark Gods." It helps that their attacks are so low-key (except for the bombing a planet once and causing a MASSIVE psychic scream by torturing a bunch of astropaths and sending dozens of planets into psy-communicating-blank) that the Night Lords are not prioritized and actively hunted by the Imperium. Otherwise they'd likely be wiped out in short order (as mentioned above with the guys that have a toilet seat as their insignia kicking their asses). DOWN WITH THE BLUE-TRDZ!(Ehem)I mean smurfs...
*Of all the Night Lords Warbands there are only three "Chaos" Lords that still lead based on their vision of The Night Haunter's Legacy:
**First there is Zso Sahaal, the "Talonmaster", former First Captain of the Legion. He was a Terran Legionnaire appointed by the Night Haunter following Sevatar's death. His flight from the rest of the Legion with the Corona Nox, which was the rightful crown of the Primarch's successor, earned him the title "The Betrayer" to some within the Legion, but he saw Curze's use of fear as focused and controlled in its use.
**Next is Krieg Acerbus, also known as the Axemaster, a Daemon Prince of Chaos Undivided. He leads the largest warband of Night Lords in the galaxy and claims that Curze wished his sons to terrorize the Imperium and devour its fear. He and Sahaal battled for the Corona Nox; Sahaal kept the crown, but lost an arm.
**Lastly, there is Talos Valcoran. Formerly an Apothecary during the Heresy/Great Crusade, he bore the titles "Prophet of the VIII Legion" and "Soul Hunter". He earned the title of Soul Hunter for pursuing and killing M'Shen, the Callidus assassin that killed the primarch, for vengeance and out of love for his father rather than greed (a difference in ideology that he would come to despise his brethren for, to some extent). He was also known for his prophetic powers like his gene-father, earning him the title "Prophet of the VIII Legion". Eventually he came to succeed his Company Captain/Warband Leader, Vandred Anrathi in leading the Warband of the Exalted, following the Fall of Vilamus. Under Talos' command, it was renamed to the Warband of the Broken Aquila. He later died on Tsagualsa at the hands of the Phoenix Lord Jain Zar of the Howling Banshees. He succeeded in "killing' her (though kill is a strong term when it comes to Phoenix Lords) in a spectacular display of determination and vengeance, taking her down with him. Talos believed that the Night Lords were betrayed by the Imperium, and were its truest weapon of terror when called upon before the Emperor betrayed them. Talos' gene-seed would later be inherited by Decimus (who might be the son of Octavia, who was the navigator of the ship and Septimus, another slave and a friend of Talos in the warband), who in turn assumed command of his Warband and gained his gift of foresight.
*The Night Lords' character can be pretty well summed up with this song --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XncuY4wLaA8
*Or this one --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2wzpfPFBlw
*Ahem; https://youtube.com/watch?v=sApYX_R4LRo
*No, your both wrong its "this" song, they play it countless imperial worlds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIPGyKGuWeA
it's proven more than effective against Imperial Guard regiments
*This is the one --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Dy28ef-_tA
*cough https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqds0B_meys
Maybe this one https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EFqjDXy9s5A
*The Night Lords actually treat their serfs pretty decently for a traitor legion. It's still not particularly pleasant, but it's better than being used as a sex toy, a sacrifice, a punching bag, a zombie, or getting eaten because the last meal was improperly prepared, it does happen on occasion or being used for target practice for lolz etc.
*They actually gave the idea of the vampire imagery to the Blood Angels

Night Lords Character
The character of the Night Lords is a bit...complicated. On one hand, sure, they are a legion of professional sadists, murderers, and (literal) terrorists that delight in preying upon the weak and defenseless at every opportunity. That's their MO. On the other hand, the Night Lords' actual personalities and motivations are surprisingly deep, varied, and intact, more so than probably any other Traitor Legion (especially after 10,000 years). They run the full gamut between bloodthirsty savages that believe terrorizing and killing are goals in and of themselves, and embittered philosophers that believe their methods once did and should still have purpose. Hell, there can even be the occasional comedian, cracking snide (and sometimes genuinely funny) jokes to his brothers while they carve their way through the screaming masses. With all those wildly differing personalities, the Night Lords are also about as dysfunctional a brotherhood as it gets, even by Traitor standards. They are (tenuously) bound by loyalty to Legion and Primarch, and may fight and die for each other on the battlefield, but off of it they all hate each other to some extent, and are in constant and heated disagreement as to the precise nature of their Legion and Primarch, and just how they should be fighting the Long War. Given just how batshit Curze was, they’re also all both right and wrong at the same time.

The Night Lords also have a bit of a dichotomy in regards to their treatment of slaves, with non-essential personnel being free to hunt for shits and giggles, while higher level officers and artificers are usually valued and protected to the point where they can have casual conversations and banter with the Astartes. The latter is something you don't see even in a good chunk of Loyalist chapters.

This all means it’s entirely possible that there are warbands of loyalist Night Lords out there. Crazy thought for a crazy(ier) Legion.

Nightly Rituals
17:00 - The Night Lords awake. It takes them a while to safely get down from their caves.

17:30 - Evening Meal. The Night Lords have a light meal by drinking the blood of captured civilians.

18:00 - Evening Firing Rites. The Night Lords conduct covert firing practice on unsuspecting Imperial citizens or Chaos worshipers. The Night Lords' serfs can't tell the exact period their masters strike as they often see a skinned and maimed body the moment they look away. Unlike traditional legions: kill-shots are considered a demerit and everyone is constantly perfecting their art of making the most efficient and painful wounding shot.

19:00 - Evening Terror Tactics. The Night Lords warm up by terrorizing the planet they will be raiding later in the night. Again the serfs have no idea when or how their masters accomplish this without getting caught.

20:45 - Snack Break. The Night Lords take a fifteen miniute break for milk and cookies. Naturally enough, the contents of the cookies varies, from being made from bone meal and blood to macadamia nut. Skeleton designs drawn on in white icing are personalised, but mandatory.

21:00 - Tactical Indoctrination. The Night Lords finally assemble in the stratagem-ampitheatre and plan out how to maximize the amount of terror they can bring about hapless populace of tonight's world. Serfs are typically commanded out of the room to spare them the nightmares of whatever they hear their masters discuss inside.

01:00 - Nighttime Firing Rites. Now the Night Lords strike. Unlike raids from other legions, there is only a ten percent death rate amongst their targets. Everyone else is helplessly maimed by bolter shots to the knees and elbows.

02:00 - Nighttime Terror Tactics. Here the Night Lords test their true skill as hunters of the dark. Those who manage to survive their opening salvos are sadistically hunted down and maimed slowly.

05:00 - "Decorating". Anyone still alive is dismembered and their still-living corpse nailed to a wall inspire fear. The Night Lords then finish up by activating an enemy distress call so that their friends can appreciate their work.

08:00 - Morning Meal. A feast is prepared by the serfs. This time the Night Lords have given up on their act and sit and munch down on the food.

09:00 - Free Time. The Night Lords occupy their free time by watching and reading an antique and legendary proto-Night Lord who calls himself as 'Batman'. Night Lords are often inspired by this ancient Terran vigilante of justice and terror and often tries their best to mimic him (whilst selectively ignoring the foolish decision to avoid killing his prey). It should also be noted of popular reading is a delightful novel series set in M3 called "The Punisher" written by ancient Terran scribe Garth Ennis. The night lords find Frank Castle's hard boiled murder sprees to be a delightful romp. For comedy, the sons of Curze amuse themselves with laughter when the character "Jigsaw" shows up.

12:00 - Rest Period. The Night Lords go back to their caves, hang upside down with their legs and prepare to sleep.

Heresy

Chaos Knights (sometimes known as Daemon Knights) are the eviler and spikier counterparts of the Imperial Knights. Due to the greatest hangover since the Age of Strife called the Horus Heresy, many Knight Households have fallen to Chaos over the centuries. Their crews have long since died but their souls have fused with Daemons, floating within shells of their war machines. The Knights themselves have mutated, spouting claws, flails, and other chaotic weapons.

Certain members of the Ordo Malleus Inquisition maintain extensive records of the names and deeds of the Chaos Knights, cataloguing their many crimes, recording their blasphemous heraldry and tracing their lines in the same manner a savant-of-arms of the Terran Chambers Pursuivant might meticulously record those of an Imperial Knight Household. Why the Inquisition has a slight obsession cataloguing the history of these traitors is unknown. Though they are few, the very existence of Chaos Knights is a nigh indelible stain on the honour of the Knight Houses and upon the entire Imperium. Therefore most loyalist Knights vow to hunt these turncoats until they surrender and meet their demise through the face of a Autocannon barrel. Most appear to be the fallen scions of the Knight Houses, often Freeblades who have trodden the path of war overlong and heeded the ever-present call of the Ruinous Powers. Others, it is whispered, belong to entire fallen Households, either ones who sided with the Warmaster during the Horus Heresy and exist still, ones which have strayed since, or even Houses never brought into the Imperial fold and hailing from unknown Knight Worlds far beyond the rule of Terra.

They can be broadly classified into three groups:

*Iconoclast Houses, whose monstrous oaths to the Dark Gods have turned them into twisted mockeries of their former selves;
*Infernal Houses, pledged to the Dark Mechanicus in exchange for unnatural power;
*Dreadblades, fallen Freeblades and other individual Knights who turned to Chaos without taking their entire House with them.

Obviously, these are not to be confused with the Chaos Knights of Warhammer Fantasy, which are Chaos Warriors mounted on mutated steeds.

Houses
*Iconoclast Houses
**House Lucaris - Originally an Imperial Knight house whose homeworld Morda Prime was brought by Horus into compliance. During the Horus Heresy, they fought alongside the Traitors because of their vows to Horus. Even after the Warmaster was killed, House Lucaris kept the oath and continued to fight against the Imperium. They went as far as cutting ties with the Black Legion, whom they thought have betrayed Horus; though in recent centuries they have struck an alliance with Abbadon the Despoiler.
**House Herpetrax - A Knight house which had only been discovered recently by Rogue Trader Cherris Draik (possible relative to the Rogue Trader character in Blackstone Fortress). They refused to submit to the Imperium and waged war to keep their independence. It seemed that members of the House had been worshiping Chaos for a long time before being discovered.
**House Khymere - Just recently being turned to Chaos, House Khymere used to be a loyal Imperial Knight House. When the Great Rift opened, the Knights were seen fighting on behalf of Chaos. To stop their rampaging, the White Scars and Ultramarines attacked them, only to discover that they were still loyal to the Imperium. The nobles, appalled by the accusations, ventured into the Great Rift to prove their loyalty. The nobles all succumbed to the influence of Chaos on their crusade, and traveled back in time to become the very heretics they were accused of.

*Infernal House
**House Vextrix - Once loyal servants of the Legio Mortis, House Vextrix followed their masters and turned Traitors during the Horus Heresy. They still fought alongside the Legio Mortis until today, while launching campaigns by themselves to recover hidden and heretical repositories of knowledge.
**House Khomentis - Before their turn to Chaos, it was a custom for nobles of House Khometix to hunt giant beasts that lived on their homeworld Matarakh, believing that these animals were their spiritual guides for the nobles after being bonded with the Knights. Now they hunt Daemons, whom they deliberately allowed to possess their body. When a noble died after housing a Daemon from too long, a small warp rift was formed to allow even more Daemons to spill out for the nobles to hunt.

*Dreadblades
**Sire of Doom - The Knights of House Daitan were captured by the Dark Mechanicum and then subjected to inhuman torture. The Knights died one by one until the last one of them, Kiro. The Dark Mechanicum then sealed all the pain and despair Kiro's kinsmans have experienced inside his machine, the Sire of Doom, turning both pilot and machine into mindless engine of destruction
**Slaughter Incarnate - House Merridon was wiped out by Hive Fleet Hydra, saved for the Knight Incarnate Valour and its pilot Decima. Just as the Knight was deep in Tyranids' corpse, it was spirited away though a Warp Rift. Now the Knight Rampager appeared on wherever battlefields had a pools of blood big enough. It regularly fought against Tyranids, but would also attack Imperials alike.
**The Gilded King - House Lyngor had a custom of adorning their Knights with escucheons made out of gold. When the High Mornachs of House Lyngor fell to Chaos, the Knight Desecrator The Gilden King began killing every other Knights, stripping them of the golden escucheons, then put them on themselves. The Gilded King continued its quest of exterminating every lifeforms on its homeworld until today.
**Hope's Shroud - The Freeblade known as Hope's Shroud pledged allegiance to Gore Vandire during the Age of Apostasy and given the task of killing Sebastian Thor. When Gore Vandire was killed and Sebastian Thor took over, Hope's Shroud sworn to kill every last Sororitas. He succeeded in killing the Canoness Superior of all six main Orders. Nowadays Hope's Shroud regularly fought alongside the Word's Bearer, and might have drawn its pilots from the Traitor Legion
**Hatred of Krastellan - House Hawkshroud, following the Heresy, gave whoever was the pilot of the Hatred of Krastellan the most inglorious and harrowing duties such as killing allies suspected of betrayal, or punishing planets which could not fufill their Imperial Tithes. At one point the spirits inhabiting Hatred of Krastellan had it enough. It declared itself the true High Mornach of House Krastellan and then began its long descent into Chaos.
**Litany of Destruction - Once a pious questing Knight called Living Litany, by unknown means the Freeblade turned to Chaos and became the Dreadblade Litany of Destruction, fighting alongside the Traitor Legions.

Chaos Variants
There was originally two known types of Chaos Knights, however in 2019 the Questoris Traitoris received some love from GW and got some new entirely unique Chaos Knight variants. They differ from the Imperial Knights in that they are allowed to get daemonic marks from the four Chaos Gods. If they choose Khorne they get the Daemon and Hatred (Daemons of Slaanesh) special rules. In addition, the Knight may re-roll the dice to determine the number of Stomps it makes as part of a Stomp attack, and it also gains +D3 attacks on any turn in which it successfully charges an enemy unit instead of +1 attack. A Daemon Knight of Khorne counts as a literal shredding machine of CQC rape and tear. If it is Nurgle they get the Daemon, Hatred (Daemons of Tzeentch) and It Will Not Die special rules. In addition, it counts as being a Daemon aligned with Nurgle, turning this thing into a gigantic bullet sponge and creating a fine distraction. If they pick Tzeentch they get the Daemon and Hatred (Daemons of Nurgle) special rules. In addition, the Daemon Knight may re-roll all To Hit rolls of 1 and its heavy stubbers have the Soul Blaze special rule. This will then turn the Knight into a giant wall of guns and overwhelming firepower. Lastly if it choose Slaanesh they get the Daemon and Hatred (Daemons of Khorne) special rules. In addition, all models with a Leadership value in combat with this Daemon Knight at the start of the Fight sub-phase must pass a Leadership test with a -2 modifier or reduce their Initiative value to 1 for the duration of that Fight sub-phase. Or to put this shortly it makes your Knight so smexy and hawt that your enemies struggle to even gain a hit.

Chaos Knight War Dog
Skub

The chaos version of the Imperial Armiger Knights. Unlike the Armigers, the War Dogs are more like lone wolves, usually coming with one model rather than a pair of two. To compensate for the lower model count, the War Dogs could carry all of the weapons from both the Warglaive and Helverin Armigers, giving the War Dogs more choice, flexibility and adaptability than their loyalist counterparts. This of course, is only applicable to the Apocalypse rule set.

War Dogs are used much in the same way by Chaos Knights as the Imperial Warglaives and Helverins - they flush the enemy out of cover and lay down covering fire for their bigger cousins. While Armiger pilots receive orders from their lords (via the helm mechanicum) as powerful and basically irresistible suggestions that are infused with notions of heroism and nobility, War Dog pilots are given brutal orders using the same mental link. These pilots are treated like garbage and used as fodder and their superiors constantly remind them that they are weak and expandable. This makes War Dog pilots bitter and angry, always scheming behind the backs of their lords but never being able to do anything about it. In battle, their pent-up frustration is let loose and they revel in killing anything weaker than them - which means most infantry and tanks, as War Dogs tower over even the Dreadnoughts of the Space Marines.

Crunch-wise, they're fast but fragile (when compared to the larger Knights, anyway) units that can dish out some punishment. War Dogs with reaper chain cleavers and thermal spears benefit more from the Iconoclast ambition as it gives them extra attacks and makes them more of a threat to tarpits and horde units due to the Morale debuff. This is not to say Infernal War Dogs are bad per se - all of the Daemonic Surge effects are great for them. +2" Move and +1 to Advance and Charges allows them to get in melta range faster and get stuck in, while +1 Toughness makes them as tough as the bigger Despoilers. Finally making the Thermal Spear S9 AP-4 Damage D6+1 (2D6 pick the highest +1 in half range) is quite crazy as well - it's a friggin' melta lascannon at that point. Iconoclast War Dogs with autocannons will have a slightly easier time fighting off their assaulters, while one of the two Infernal autocannons can become a respectable S8 AP-1 D4 death machine when you need it to be. Don't forget to grab a Knight Desecrator if you want to make the most of these puppies!

clear

Chaos Knight Paladin (7E)
Similar to their more loyal counterparts in terms of looks and armory, Chaos Paladins are the vanilla of Traitorous Knights and come automatically with a Knight chainsword, a two-shot battle cannon and an extra heavy stubber. Meant to be used at longer ranges, Chaos Paladins help cover firing support towards the traitor legions by specifically targeting infantry and light armor. Chaos Paladins are super-heavy walkers that have a special Ion Shield that gives them a 4+ invulnerable save. The Chaos Paladin can take an additional Dirge Caster and is allowed to take a daemonic mark from any of the four Chaos Gods.

For all intents and purposes, Chaos Paladins function almost entirely the same as their loyalist counterparts. Of course, they differ greatly from the aforementioned favors of the Chaos Gods. For the Paladin specifically, it is preferable if you have a daemonic pact with Tzeentch as it compliments the long range DAKKA of the Knight Paladin specifically. Having your autocannon be able to re-roll all hit rolls of 1 is a significant boon against light armor and turning your mediocre heavy stubber into the more useful soul blaze is quite nifty in scoring a few more kills. Of course, if you are more inclined to preserve your DISTRACTION CARNIFEX as much as possible, you could have a pact with Nurgle. If you want to always attack first and fuck with the enemy moral if they ambush you with CQC, choose Slaanesh. However, Khorne maybe the least effective of the Chaos Gods as his buffs clash with the more well-rounded and balanced playstyle of the Paladin; you use the Paladins' autocannon and heavy stubber to provide fire support, only going in close with your chainsword to protect more vulnerable units from ambushes.

<gallery>
File:Chaos-knight-paladin-hellboywearshotpants.jpg|Chaos Paladin of Chaos Undivided. When you don't care what enemies you're fighting against, so long as you can watch the world burn
</gallery>

Chaos Knight Errant (7E)
Another copy-pasta of the loyalist equivalents. Chaos Errants come with the standard issue Knight chainsword, a S9 Thermal Cannon with a large blast marker and an extra heavy stubber. They act as close combat dedicated tank destroyers as their heavier weaponry allows the Errant to breach enemy armor with relative ease. Chaos Errants like the Paladins are super-heavy walkers that have a special Ion Shield that gives them a 4+ invulnerable save. The Chaos Errants can take an additional Dirge Caster as well as take a daemonic mark from any of the four Chaos Gods.

For all intents and purposes, Chaos Errants function almost entirely the same as their loyalist counterparts. Of course, they differ greatly from the aforementioned favors of the Chaos Gods. For the Errant specifically, its more assault and close range/anti-tank nature means that it benefits more towards the pact of Khorne to deal with those pesky infantry. The ability to be able to re-roll the number of stomp attacks and the +D3 attacks on a successful charge (Which you will be using a lot off) would make this close range anti-tank walker <u>SCARY.</u> Of course, if you are more inclined to turn your DISTRACTION CARNIFEX into a giant Khornate Berserker that cannot die, you could have a pact with Nurgle. If you want to always attack first and fuck with the enemy moral if they ambush you when your busy dealing with tanks, choose Slaanesh. However, Tzeentch maybe the least effective of the Chaos Gods as his buffs to the heavy stubber is pointless and whilst his re-rolls of all hit rolls of 1 to the Thermal Cannon is nice and all, once that enemy tank is within range of your gigantic chainsword, the re-roll to hit rolls becomes almost window dressing.

</gallery>

Chaos Knight Rampager
The Chaos Knight Rampager is the eviler counterpart to the Knight Gallant (Seriously, that chainsword and power fist/claw is not that subtle). This is an entirely CQC orientated Chaos Knight, more so than the Chaos Knight Errant. The fact that its 'helmet' looks like those of an NFL Footballer may or may not be intentional (Seriously it looks more at home in Blood Bowl than it does 40k).

Knight Rampagers fluff wise, are -true to their name- basically Khorne Berserkers in Knight-form. Oh yes, Khornate players rejoice because this monster is going to tear several unfortunate vehicles a new asshole. In this regard, they act more like giant beasts or Daemon Engines rather than the actual 'Noble Demon' characterization of the Knight Desecrator; storming into battle howling rather than speaking in Middle English. They charge full tilt toward the foe with no thought for their own defense. As damaging and scary as a regular Khornate Bersker is, imagine one the size of a two-story building. Bricks will be shat.

Crunchwise, these are your classic brawlers, they are extremely damaging in close combat and, unlike the Desecrator which is a more balanced duelist, the Rampagers are just there to Leeroy Jenkins their way through the soft and juicy parts of any army play list and let it rip. Suffice to say, short of another CQC supheavy walker or a Primarch and some Assault Terminators, Rampagers are going to make for an excellent and pants-shitisfying DISTRACTION CARNIFEX.
clear

Chaos Knight Despoiler
skub

Not to be confused with another Despoiler.
A unique variant, the Knight Despoiler is very adaptable ranged anti-tank walker in contrast to the CQC Knight Rampager. By replacing either its Reaper Chainsword or Thunderstrike Gauntlet, the Knight Despoiler gain access to a wide and we mean <u>WIDE</u> range of anti-tank and anti-infantry weapons, from an Avenger Gatling Cannon, Rapid-fire Battle Cannon all the way to a Thermal Cannon. This makes the Knight Despoiler exceptionally customizable and adaptable superheavy weapons platform. In addition to gaining access to ALL the Questoris-class weapons of the different Imperial variants, Knights Despoilers can double up on the same gun too! Being free from the shackles of the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Sacristan Orders allows Knights Despoiler to wreak havoc and GET SHIT DONE! In the fluff, the choice of weaponry reflects the noble pilots preferance and his condition too. Without the help of their sacristans, some nobles find that weapons more complex than rapid-fire battle cannons are almost impossible to maintain and so stick to to these. Other nobles just really like the sound of gatling good and strap two Avenger gatling cannons to their knight. Whatever the case, most of the knights in any Iconoclast or Infernal household will be Despoilers armed to the teeth and ready to leave a trail of destruction behind them.

Before the brand-spanking-new Chaos Knights codex, the most popular loadout was 2 Avenger gatling cannons with either an Ironstorm Missile Pod or Stormspear Rocket Pod. Due to some point changes, there's some competition for the Dakka knight of Doom now. Doubling up on guns is still a good idea, but the new, cheaper Thermal Cannons are a lot more enticing and double RFBCs are not bad by any means either (dat range doe). There's also something to be said about hybrid loadouts - Infernals for example can only boost one of their ranged weapons with Daemonic Power, so if you want 'supercharged' Avenger shots on the cheap, you could grab a melee weapon instead of a second gun and be slightly better against heavy tanks and the like.

clear

Chaos Knight Desecrator
skub
In contrast to the Rampager, Knights Desecrator possess potent mid- to close-range armaments that lend themselves toward duelling enemy war engines or monstrous beasts, or tearing down the foe's Fortifications. Armed with a laser destructor, it packs a considerable punch at considerable range. There was some confusion between the Desecrator and the Despoiler due to the fact that GW used the same knight image for both the Desecrator and Despoiler. Thankfully, the Codex: Chaos Knights dispelled this confusion and confirmed that, yes, they are indeed two different patterns.

On tabletop, these are one of your vanilla Chaos Knights. The longer ranged version of the Knight Errant - both loyalist and traitor - the Knight Desecrator is your short-to-long ranged anti-tank option despite what fluff dictates it being short-to-mid ranged. Trust us, laser destructors are anything but short ranged. As such, these Knights offer an excellent and extremely flexible unit for any Chaos army. The only thing it is vulnerable against is being tarpitted, but than again, that's where the Rampager comes in.

clear

Chaos Knight Tyrant
skub
The more evil versions of the baby-Warlord Titans known as the Dominus Knights. The Chaos Knight Tyrants either bring the weapons of the Imperial Knight Castellan (volcano lance and plasma decimator) or those of the Valiant (thundercoil harpoon and conflagration cannon). Unlike the Knights Despoiler, you can't double up on the same weapon or mix the two loadouts. This is very fortunate or unfortunate, depending on which side of the Tyrant you are. Regardless of their arm weapons, they also carry at least one twin siegebreaker cannon and a pair of shieldbreaker missiles and have two twin meltaguns for point defense. In the fluff, it is mentioned that most Tyrant pilots fuse bodily with their steeds to become the apex predators of the battlefield. In many Infernal households, the souls of the pilots are consumed by their daemon-infested throne mechanicum, leaving their mutated body writhing on it. These bodies are cut open and carved by the Dark Mechanicum to allow a new pilot to take his or her place on the throne. They too will be consumed in time and the cycle begins anew. Grimdark.

Rules-wise, these guys are very similar to their Imperial counterparts at first glance. What really sets them apart are the Chaos Knight stratagems. Trail of Destruction will make a 'Castellan' less likely to damage itself and more likely to hit its mark, regardless of the enemies' To Hit modifiers. When it comes to ambitions, Infernal might be the way to go - higher Movement will help the 'Valiant' get in range quicker, T9 will make these guys straight up ridiculous and buffing their almost Titan-grade weaponry is just insane.

Slaaneshi Variants
fail
For some reason, Slaanesh has a fetish for knights/titans of his/her/its own. You would think that these massive engines of destruction would be more suitable for Khorne or Nurgle right? Instead Slaanesh must glory hog all of these in order to compensate for his/her/its lack of Daemon Engines (or maybe since he/she/it is already the lady/lord of hentai, it may as well govern over all things weeaboo, including giant robots). Similar to the Slaanesh Subjugator, these daemonically altered knights look more like glorified flamingos than an actual threat. Than again Slaanesh strives for beauty and elegance rather than coolness and awesomeness so its all in character.

The Daemon Knights of Slaanesh are surrounded by a glittering wall of energy. This is a result of the Warp-interface which keeps the daemonic spirit within them in the material universe. This shifting, swirling aura is called the Glamour of Slaanesh and makes the Daemon Knights very hard to accurately target. In a nutshell, they are Slaaneshi/Chaos Holo-Fields, not surprising given what Slaanesh was born in.

There are three main types of Slaanesh Daemon Knights. <s>Each more pompous than the next.</s> <span style='color:purple;font-size:100%'>Well well well! Excuse me Princess! Who do you think I am? A Barbarian like Khorne? I am more cultured than that! >:( </span>

Hell-Knight
Hell-Knights are one of the most specialized of the Slaaneshi knights and by far the least painful looking. Aside from Bolters, their main weapon is a Thermal Cannon which, albeit short-ranged, has enough power to pierce almost any armour plate with relative ease. Hell-Knights are often used to hunt down enemy Knights and even Titans, exploiting their speed to attack from the sides and overwhelm opponents. Moreover, they are excellent at infiltrating enemy positions, setting ambushes, and attacking support detachments and artillery. Their combat role is ironically similar to that of the Eldar's Revenant Titan, further mirroring the dark symbolism and relationship between Slaanesh and the Eldar.

In addition to this, they are perfectly suited to perform ambushes, and are often used in this respect. In packs, they can even destroy Imperator Titans, as was the case with the Praeco Deictus during the Battle of Kado. How a 100+foot tall Titan with weapons that can bathe entire armies in plasma can fall to these chicken walkers, no matter how daemonically possessed is a source of embarrassment to the Imperium.

Hell-Scourge
Hell-Scourges are slightly larger than the Hell-Knights.

While they look similar to the Hell-Knights, Hell-Scourges wield a massive Castigator Cannons. Hell-Scourges possess a certain pack instinct and are in constant telepathic communication with each other. As such, they make exceptionally well-coordinated assaults, outflanking their enemies with ease. This telepathic contact seems to encompass all Hell-Scourges present on the battlefield, or perhaps even further.

The Castigator Cannons mind your, ain't related to the Castigator Bolt Cannon. If it was, than this Knight would have been ten times cooler, but alas it is some kind of Slaaneshi weapon with little to no information. Most likely that the Castigator Cannon could be similiar in affect to the Tormentor Cannons from the Slaaneshi Questor Scout Titan and Subjugator. But than again, how the hell does one kill a Titan with pain weapons?

Overall they function similar to that of Hell-Knights, requiring large numbers to overwhelm larger machines.

Hell-Strider
Hell-Striders are the smallest of the Slaaneshi knights.

They are also the most painful to the eyes and look completely stupid. Looking more akin to a walking <s>penis</s><span style='color:purple;font-size:100%'>HOHOHO! But that is the entire point of my ingenious machines! Why else to design them in such a phallic appearance then to make my lovely Eldar wet themselves in delight!</span>

Anyway being the smallest of the bunch, these vehicles are extremely mobile, able to flush enemy out of defenses with their powerful short-ranged weaponry. Like their older <s>brothers</s> sisters, in sufficient numbers, Hell-Striders can even hunt enemy Titans, picking off their prey's shields with their Lascannons, before closing in for the kill with their melta-beams.....How the hell are they supposed to get near the Titan without getting blown up? You could see that pink from the cockpit 100 feet in the air. Seriously, you might as well give them a sign that say "shoot me". See, this is why you can't take out 1 incompetent empire, this shit, right here.
