Possibly the most <s>derp</s> <s>awesome</s> skubtastic thing to come out of Games Workshop, the Noise Marines are Chaos Space Marines sworn to Slaanesh.

What?
Yeah, so Slaanesh is the God of Excessive Pleasure: lots of sex, lots of drugs, lots of weird sex, lots of pain, lots of weird sex that's painful, lots of weird sex while on drugs that are painful. You get the picture. So when it comes to making up a Slaaneshi flavor of Chaos Space Marines, what does GW come up with?

Rock stars, naturally. Rock stars with sound-laser guitars. Because in the '80s, everything was glam' rock and awesome. They've since moved away from giving them actual sonic guitars in favor of sonic guns, but the parallel is still there. Why have they moved away from something freaking awesome into something just kind of meh (excluding the fact that Blaster-Guitars-Swords sound wonderfully dumb)? <s>Because Games Workshop doesn't know a good thing when it sees one. You really should know this by now.</s> The recent Vigilus Weekender revealed a celebratory model based almost entirely on the original model, with some added flair and modernized scaling. Also with the bonus of it standing on a decapitated Primaris Marine's head.

Even more recently, thanks in part to Dawn of War 2: Retribution and a certain Youtube video This one is even better they've seen a slight resurgence of popularity. The goofy idea of '80s, Motley Crue-spewing Noise Marines has been replaced with the goofier idea of evil-DJ-esque Noise Marines with long and loud sustained "music" (also known as dubstep) being blasted out of speaker-guns at head-fryingly loud volumes. Also the idea of a Land Raver is pretty cool too. Their in-game counterparts, however, still stick true to the original Noise Marines and attempt to rock their enemies to death. More recently the classic and new designs have been melded together by Forgeworld to produce the Kakophoni (say it out loud a few times and you'll get it). Lore-wise these are now the predecessors of the modern noise marine, and incorporate features from both the current and old designs, carrying around broad frequency warp-dubstep guns that are literally re-purposed musical instruments, and getting speakers installed in their own faces to scream louder. However, representing their status as more or less a prototype of the modern noise marine, their guns are heavy and prone to exploding, and their shriekers are not only weaker than a regular doom siren, but also are described as taking quite some time to recharge between uses.

There have been sightings of the Noise Marine's 21st century counterparts who used weaponised dubstep to fuck up Counter Strike wannabes; if you want to make an ACTUAL terrorist's teeth explode, then you need to called up the L.R.A.D, a real world sonic cannon with a range of over two miles, with a total volume slightly lower then a shotgun going off next to your ear, but able to just keep that volume up for hours.

L.R.A.D is maybe close, and while it surely does please Slaanesh while doing a pretty awesome job of ruining some terrorist's day, it does not quite match the mark of Slaanesh's rock star/Skrillex Marines, but some day...

Dawn of War 2
Noise Marines are scary as fuck in Dawn of War 2. 3 member squad carries 3 sonic blasters that does flame damage; yeah, 3 flamers in one squad. Their damage is quite high, even hurts heavy infantry like Tactical Marines. The result is even better if you use it on light infantry like Guardians, Shoota Boyz or Termigants. But that's not all!. Sonic blasters disable ranged weapons and grenades on those hit. So you can't just out-shoot them, they will also disable your weapons. You could try to get into melee with them...but they have an ability that knocks back everything short of vehicles in a wide radius of their position so your choppy troops will just bounce around aimlessly for any other troops to finish off.

They are even more threatening in tier 2 with their Blastmaster upgrade. Basically it's a plasma cannon for Chaos army. Does great damage, insane range, massive knock-back. The weapon is a bit odd however, as it knocks back everyone in its firing path. So if you set up your Havocs to fire in front of them, they will be INTERRUPTED by a Blastmaster. The weapon is great for crowded groups.

Noise Marines are all Chaos was missing in Chaos Rising expansion pack. Flamers for power bashing, artillery for later stages. Their short range sonic blasters may become a problem in later stages since there will be lots of threats for them and they are in front of your all army with their short range. Upgrading them to Blastmaster wouldn't be a bad idea for protecting a victory point.

On the Table Top
Noise Marines have always been, at the very least, a competent shooting unit that won't necessarily collapse in close combat; the primary difference between them and other Astartes has been their unique weapon choices and until 8th edition, a higher initiative stat. They were introduced as a Chaos Space Marine wielding a guitar gun; there was only one type of noise marine and noise marine weapon in those days with little in the way of options.

Second Edition
Noise Marines got new weapons this time around, splitting their weapons into the now well-known sonic blaster, blastmaster and doom siren. The crazy part was just the availability of the weaponry - anyone in the squad could take any sonic weapon, which was wild!

Third Edition
This is where things get interesting. At the onset of Third, Noise Marine weapons get a weird change getting variable strength but low AP and the weapons were more restricted: noise marines were armed primarily with the sonic blaster, with some upgrade options to blastmaster or doom siren, while the champion could still take any of the sonic weapons - including the blastmaster! Also note that Noise Marines were a Heavy Support choice here instead of an elite, which was changed with the new codex.

Then 3.5 came along and changed that dramatically: sonic weaponry were revised again removing their random strength and the blastmaster specifically gained it's double profile here. They also become flat upgrades to other weapons on models with the Mark of Slaanesh or on vehicles dedicated to Slaanesh. The implication here was that for a fee, most models could upgrade or straight up buy better bolters, flamers or auto-cannons. It also meant there were vehicles with sonic weapons, making the Emperor's Children somewhat OP. Noise Marines specifically could be taken as troops if the lord leading the army had a mark of Slaanesh and any unit numbering 6 models could take an aspiring champion for free.

Fourth Edition
A bit of a downgrade from Third, the base profile was effectively a fearless CSM with better leadership and initiative. Sonic blasters didn't change at all but could now be upgraded from their bolters as per the previous edition. The biggest change was the blastmaster gaining AP3 on their high-power setting and the Doom Siren being upgraded to S5 AP3. Noise Marines also got shuffled into the Troops section and overall, were the second most chosen troops choice for builds behind plague marines throughout fourth and fifth edition.

Sixth Edition
Moved back to elites with a Troops choice caveat, Noise Marines had another change to their weaponry with sonic blasters becoming Salvo 2/4 and all sonic weaponry ignoring cover. Basic noise marines with no options were a bargain infantry choice being flat-out better than most other Astartes but only costing 18 pts. before options. This would ferry them through seventh edition wherein they had their Emperor's Children list somewhat restored from 3.5.

Eighth Edition
These guys are so good now! In their previous incarnation while an all around solid choice, they had mobility problems as most of their set-up forced you to play in a very static fashion. Well, Slaanesh heard our pleas, and THINGS SHALL GET LOUD NOW! Sonic Blasters are now Assault 3, so you not only can move, but you have even the option to advance and still shoot (with a -1 to hit, but still!); they're broadly speaking more expensive combi-bolters, doubling the price in exchange for ignoring cover and moving from Rapid Fire 2 to Assault 3. Blastmasters are not as powerful as they once were against power armor; but are far better against characters, terminators, vehicles, and multi-wound models in general. Averaging 2 shots at S8/AP-2/D2, but possibly doing 9 damage in a single shooting phase, at 20 pts they cost 5 pts less than a Missile Launcher or Lascannon! The Varied Frequency setting will see far more use than in the past as well; averaging 3.5 S4/AP-1/D1 shots, with the potential for 6 shots, it's got slightly better rate of fire than a Sonic Blaster, and a much-improved AP of -1. The Doom Siren is now a heavy flamer with AP-2 and D6 auto-hits for 10 pts. You can now take a Sonic Blaster on your champion! They get the Music of the Apocalypse rule, which lets them fire a weapon (or a grenade) when they die!.
Noise Marines are not slouches in the melee either with 2 attacks each. Which makes them as effective as loyalist Assault Marines in melee. You can swap out their bolters for Chainswords to gain a bonus attack taking them to 3 attacks each in the fight phase. Take the Icon of Excess and the trigger Death to the False Emperor on a 5+ to hit. The unique Emperor's Children stratagem: Excess of Violence give them a bonus attack for each model slain. They're no Khorne Berserkers but melee kitted Noise Marines can do work with the right stratagem and psychic power boosts. All in all, these guys are awesome (and surprisingly cheap at 15 pts, too).
*Note: As of the March 2019 FAQ, Music of the Apocalypse has suffered a heavy nerf. While previously this meant you could deal some nasty punishment across the map when models started dropping in melee combat, including character-targeting shenanigans, this now means you can only get a single pistol shot off when inside of 1" of enemy models.
**Fun quirk with the Champion: It is technically possible for the Champion to take a Sonic Blaster, a Doom Siren, AND a combi-bolter, and can legally fire them all at once!
**New FAQ note: Death to the False Emperor applies to any hits made in the Fight phase<del>, including shooting attacks made with pistols</del> except no fun is allowed and shooting with MotA counts as Shooting phase. Sad sonic gurgling. Grenades can also be thrown by EVERY Noise Marine that dies, not just one per unit. Do note however that only pistols can be fired at units within 1".
**Additional FAQ Note: If you go the close combat route with your Noise Marines (possibly even if you don't), give your Champion a Plasma Pistol. If you use it on your Music attack, there's no reason not to supercharge it--you're dead anyway!

Tl;dr: The God of Excess delivers in the 8th Edition. While briefly losing their ability to be taken as troops when the codex first dropped, a subsequent FAQ has allowed to be taken as troops if they are Emperors Children. Slaanesh in general is just excellent this edition. Now that Sonic Blasters are Assault 3 you can foot slog them to a mid-field objective and still maintain effective fire. Or take a squad of Noise Marines in a Metal Box, get it within range of a distant one, and drop the bass. In an Emperor's Children detachment they gain Flawless Perfection granting them always strikes first in combat. In a Renegade detachment they Dark Raiders which allow them to move, advance and charge in the same turn. So they can move and advance, fire off 3 sonic Blaster shots, and charge into combat. With all the newly available psychic powers and stratagem combos of the new codex.

A psyker, in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, is an individual with psychic powers capable of accessing the Warp. This is both a blessing and a curse; though psykers are often able to achieve spectacular feats with their abilities, the Warp is a perilous place, and whenever a psyker uses their abilities there is a chance that they will be subject to the Perils of the Warp. Death is one of the milder results of this; extremely unlucky psykers might actually be tortured in countless ways by daemons and used as a gateway from the Warp into the physical world. Luckily, in the ranks of the Imperial Guard, where there's a psyker, there's usually a Commissar ready to unleash the power of Blam.

Types of Psyker
The different races of the setting perceive psykers in different ways.

Imperium
The Imperium of Man regards most psykers as extremely dangerous, because these are people with scary powers, and the influence of the Warp tends not to let them stay sane for very long, but hey, wizards are real, coolHERESY! BLAM. There is also the threat of Chaos possessing them and summoning daemons...or having the daemons just eat them Thus, the Inquisition hunts them down so they can either be sacrificed to feed the Empra or sanctioned and made to serve the Imperium (under an inquisitor's watchful eye). Such psykers appear as a unit in the Dawn of War games and like to scream incomprehensible one-liners so mind-numbingly loud that they may very well actually make your head explode. Space Marines make their psykers into Librarians: in addition to psychic support on the battlefield, they compile records in the Librarium, serve to assist in battlefield communications, and test their brothers for Chaotic contamination. Imperial Guard Sanctioned Psykers combine psychic powers with Standard Issue Balls of Steel that every Imperial Guard member is issued upon conscription alongside with lasgun. In addition, they have a nasty reputation for being BLAMMED by Commissars. "Rogue Psykers" is the official designation for any psyker who hasn't been collared by the Imperium yet and are often hated by more puritan worlds, in extreme cases routinely being hunted down and killed; but on most worlds being sanctioned (assuming you survive and don't mind the side effects) gives an air of authority and orthodoxy to an otherwise hated thing. People still hate you, but instead of treating you like a particularly verbose bit of dung, now you're hated the way tax collectors are hated. Astropaths are beyond such venom, partly because they are less prone to possession and mostly because they are a planet's only way of communicating with the greater Imperium. People still feel uneasy around them, but even Black Templars have to cope with them and make nice faces. However, the Emperor <s>was</s> is a psyker, so the next time some idiot tells you that Psykers are heresy, use this little fact on their fa--BLAM BLASPHEMY!. Well, actually not, since for an average citizen of the Imperium the Emperor is God, so His wielding godly powers in the glory days before His ascension is actually the core tenet of the Imperial Cult and proof of his divinity. Not so for mere mortal psykers, who are rightly considered unholy and corruptible as opposed to a literal god who obviously can do things like that easy peasy, which he did demonstrate that he could. Oh, you mortally wounded me through my favored lab rat? Let me just erase your collective avatar out of existence in one shot.

Humanity, being the stars of the show, obviously have arguably the greatest psychic potential overall (because of course they do), with a psychic evolution (which could take countless centuries or even millennia to take place, even if they can survive it) into a fully psychic race which the Emperor himself has said may very well equal or even possibly surpass even the Eldar at their peak, although with the loss of the Webway project even the Emperor admits that this path is pretty much now closed to humanity. Becoming a psychic race doesn't suddenly make you god tier, it just makes you psychic; the Eldar are a full-blown psychic race and they aren't exactly doing brilliantly.
*Like all of his interactions with others, anything that the Emperor says should be treated as a possible falsehood (he's a bit of a compulsive liar and manipulator). His whole speech to Ra about humanity's possible psychic might may well have been just what the Emperor wanted Ra to hear in order to prepare him to make his sacrifice at the end of the book.

Humanity has managed to produce some of the strongest Psykers in the history of the Galaxy but most didn't come into being through natural means:

*The Emperor is obviously the first that springs to mind as he is unquestionably the strongest mortal psyker that has yet been seen, unless you count the Old Ones (Emps could be an Old One masquerading as a human). The question is however: is he even human? There are many theories surrounding the Emperor's origins and his exact nature. Was he born or is he a construct from the Dark age of technology that believes itself to be human? If we take the whole Shaman origin as fact then his psychic might is due to the large number of psychic beings merging their minds into one which is certainly not the norm (strangely something similar happened to Ephrael Stern). Even if we assume he's a single entity that happens to be immortal, there is the whole deal with the Chaos gods which may or may not have boosted his already considerable power (and yes, it is stated that he needed a ship to get there, but didn't need one to get back). The Emperor is clear proof that, whatever he might be, the most powerful psyker in existence has indisputably allied itself with humanity.
*Magnus is a Primarch and should in no way be considered entirely human. He, like all his kind, are artificial beings created through Warp shenanigans and advanced bio-engineering. There is nothing natural about him or his psychic might. Above and beyond even high grade transhhumans, a Primarch is a literal demigod perfected through soul and gene engineering. This translates to Psychic ability as well.
*Malcador is the only truly natural (depending upon what happens with his backstory once it is finally revealed) human standout amongst the big names. He may play second fiddle to the likes of the abominations that are the EmperorBLAM BLASPHEMY! and Magnus, but he is still the strongest "human" psyker on the list. Natural humans are never going to be able to compete with the gods of the Warp, but a race of potential Malcadors doesn't sound too shabby, does it?

Human psykers (with occasional exceptions, like Space Marine Librarians) tend to be one trick ponies; if they are telepathic, then that is what they can do - it is very unlikely that they will have any skill in something like telekinesis, pyromancy, or divination. If this was an RPG, then they would be the guys who put all their experience into learning one or two skills until they have maxed them out, but end up having nothing left to spend on anything else. Yes, they can create a very powerful fireball, but that's all they can do. If anyone is capable of "omnimancy" then they are usually so powerful they can brute force powers from all disciplines, or are engaging in rituals and sorceries which is technically cheating, and stupidly dangerous to even masters of the art.

Squats
The Squats that grow very old are called "living ancestors". They are extremely rare, and develop psychic powers by communing with the spirits of their predecessors. And you could put them in an egg-shaped terminator armor, then onto a trike, with a bolt-firing cavalry lan-BLAM Squats are heresy!<span style='color:maroon;font-size:110%'> *FFSSSHHHHHOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!* Oi! What did ye just call us?</span>

Forces of Chaos
Chaos tends to have...varied opinions on psykers.
*Daemons are made out of the stuff of the Warp, and using psychic powers is shaping and throwing out a little bit of the Warp, so a daemon using psychic powers is the rough equivalent of taking a severed limb or some bones and throwing it as a viable attack. While that sounds pretty fucking metal, Khorne thinks that pulling this bullshit is a sign that you're not manly enough to get into the thick of it and handle the situation on your own, and opinion is shared by his daemons and mortal followers. Not only do they not use psychic powers, but they actively hate any pussified deadbeat who uses them, and they even get toys that fuck with anybody trying to use those powers. However, it should be said that (deeply confused) Khornate traitor librarians exist - Khorne's opinion of them doesn't stop them from idolizing him. They just don't receive his favor, obviously (Unless your name is SSSSSSIIIINDDDRRRIIII). Any psyker who wishes to serve him swears off their powers except for utility like telepathy or to stop other psykers from cheating. Having a cheat code and not using it makes you more honorable, not less.
*On the other end of the spectrum, Tzeentch, being the god of magic, is hugely into psychic powers, and he likes making new ones that do all kinds of mix-and-match effects, though only the best are actually rolled out. That's the official line. He's actually a closeted pyro, and a lot of his powers are burny or...do weird shit. Being the patron of psykers, if people get Tzeentch's attention because they're scholars or David Xanatos, they'll eventually develop psychic power whether they like it or not. Due to higher exposure to Warp energy via psychic powers and serving the god of change, Tzeentch's minions, and more often, their minions have the highest rates of mutation and turning into Chao--er, tentacly gribblies. Ahriman, possibly the greatest of Tzeentch's servants barring Magnus himself, was so powerful a Psyker that he was able to defeat Ulthwe's most venerated Psyker, Kyaduras the Anchorite, with ease, and, in the same battle, also casually defeated Yvraine, the Yncarne, and the Visarch.
*In the middle, Nurgle likes any psykers that spread his gifts around, but doesn't really go out of his way to promote them in his followers either, probably on account of his direct opposition to Tzeentch. Needless to say, his powers all revolve around inflicting people with horrible diseases or boosting their endurance to unnatural levels.
*Similarly, Slaanesh thinks Tzeentch is a giant nerd, whose overdevotion to his nerdy hobby of inventing new psychic powers will never get him laid. We think it says this because Tzeentch <s>refuses to sleep with it (it almost certainly likes his tentacles and crotch mouth)</s> is afraid he might catch Warp chlamydia, and he's just not willing to give Nurgle that kind of satisfaction. Slaaneshi psykers emphasize powers that make the hurt feel good, or have effects that look like the target might have snorted the psychic power off of a stripper's ass.

Being able to combine psychic powers, sorcery, and the favours of the Dark Gods easily makes the psychic followers of Chaos amongst the most powerful and dangerous individuals to have ever existed within the 40k setting.

Eldar
Craftworld
The Craftworld Eldar are a strongly psychically-attuned race. While the regular, off-the-street Eldar will restrain themselves from using any psychic powers beside basic telepathic communication and the ability to use their psychic technology out of fear of being mindraped by Slaaneshi daemons, they can join the Path of the Seer and train to better control their innate abilities. Eldar who go on this path with previous experience as Aspect Warriors become Warlocks, while the most powerful seers can become Farseers and leaders of their people. They're ridiculously powerful psykers because of that deep imprint in the Warp to draw power, combined with their Spehss Ehlvan minds and willpower. They just need to be fucking careful and avoid unwanted attention unless they like tentacles.

The true capacity and depth of Eldar psychic abilities tend to be rather watered down or just plain ignored outright, due to the demands of the plot which is almost always told with the Imperium as the protagonist of the story. Within most stories the authors will tend to use the "M. Night Shyamalan" style of writing, which means having the Eldar Farseers getting a vision of events that are going to happen in the future and set out to stop it, only to discover that they either had it wrong the whole time, or they themselves brought about the very event that they wished to prevent; all the while the authors are hopping around shouting "WHAT A TWIST" at the top of their lungs. Due to the vast focus put upon the forces of the Imperium it is not a surprise that there is such an abundance of named human Psykers running rampant across the galaxy, but remember that humans only produce an exceptional psychic individual once in a blue moon; those humans that prove themselves strong and stable enough to join the ranks of the Marines as Librarians are a rare breed but more than prove their worth over multiple centuries of service.

By comparison, every Eldar citizen can, if they wish to, potentially become a Farseer; although no Farseer will ever manage to reach the same level of power as the likes of Magnus it's not really a fair comparison as he really isn't human and did not come into existence through natural means. In a slightly darker turn of events, where the likes of Spiritseers, who are able to commune with and manipulate the souls of the Eldar dead, the Ynnari actually amplify their existing powers through absorbing the souls of previous Eldar, which many Eldar among the Craftworlds consider to be horrifying. GW's "fuck what the Xenos are supposed to be able to do; the Imperium and Chaos are the stars of this setting" rule is seen many times in the story itself, with powerful Eldar Psykers like Eldrad very rarely performing impressive feats within the stories they are featured in, and you are just told that they are very powerful before they are inevitably defeated by the glorious human protagonist (Loyalist or otherwise). Eldar Farseers, in particular, suffer from the "Worf effect" more then most, despite often being heralded as great seers they have a terrible track record within the storyline itself, very rarely succeeding in any of their endeavors. An important thing to keep in mind is that The Black Library writers love to add their very own super duper special human snowflake Psyker into the story because the "Rule of Cool" demands it, with many in the lore being attributed with the ability to destroy Titans and armies. Farseers on the other hand are often shown being incapable of even defeating a single Space Marine, let alone a tank, army or Titan, and Farseers are, explicitly, meant to be the most powerful Eldar Psykers in the galaxy. However, this could simply be either a way of keeping it so they don't win by default due to knowing exactly how a battle will go or (much more likely) Black Library incompetence making it impossible to get a remotely accurate depiction of what their powers can do.

The 8th edition codex seems to have made an attempt to address this situation. Whilst all Eldar walking upon the Witch Paths are capable of mastering many different physic disciplines throughout their long lives, they tend to avoid developing their more destructive powers, instead focusing all their efforts on developing their more “helpful” and “creative” powers; such as the Bonesingers, who use their powers to create and then craft Wraithbone. This goes well with the Craftworlder’s mindset when it comes to avoiding their darker more destructive sides.

Those who find it easier to master the more destructive disciplines tend to be those who have walked the Path of the Warrior and have already had their more violent impulses tested. These individuals will become Warlocks, and can make use of their more destructive powers upon the battlefield without putting those around them in danger; as they already have their War Masks in place, to help focus them and to separate their warlike selves from their normal selves.

Farseers will unfortunately still suck in any story that they are featured in, but they are not supposed to be just weapons, they are guides and advisers who help guide the blade, not swing it themselves. This, of course, doesn’t help the fact that they are still going to be treated like a bunch of red shirts, that will inevitably fail at every single opportunity by the writers at GW.

The Eldar make use of Rune Stones that act as conduits through which they can manipulate the psychic energies of a the Warp without actually having to interact with the Warp directly; though this does limit their overall psychic power level it does provide them with a much safer and controlled way to access the energies of the Warp. The Rune stones also act as psychic fuses burning out and cutting the link to the Warp should an Eldar try to tap into too much power before they are ready. As they develop their control and skill the Eldar psykers will eventually be able to use a far greater number of stones, which allows them to tap into far greater pools of power.

Eldar tend to be the Swiss Army knife of psykers; being able to learn many different psychic disciplines. If this was an RPG then they would be the guys who spread their experience out over a wide range of powers and abilities. They don't tend to max out their powers, but instead end up with a much wider skill set to call upon.

Harlequins
Harlequins are also psychic, which really comes out in their shows, and although only the Shadowseer can use powers in a fight, other Harlequins do enjoy the benefits of psychic senses and silent telepathic communication.

Dark
The Dark Eldar, however, are psychically atrophied compared to their Craftworld bros due to centuries of largely abstaining from using their powers. They have to avoid using psychic powers due to Slaanesh's "I own your soul" gig, their general lack of restraint required for psykers to use their powers without instantly getting devoured alive by daemons, and Dark Eldar using psychic powers are reasonably feared as bait for snusnu-with-a-Daemonette.

They can use psychic artifacts, like all those crazy living swords and Haemonculus toys, and the only psychic power they use is their infamous emotion-vampirism ability that can replenish their bodies and souls by inflicting copious amounts of pain and misery and soaking in all that torment. And kamehamehas, for Mandrakes. They do have extra fun torturing, killing and then weaponizing psykers though.

Exodite
While the psychic capabilities of Exodite Eldar are rarely elaborated upon (mostly because works that involve them typically involve being punching bags for enemy factions), it is likely that the Exodites still retain their psychic powers. This is due to them being able to communicate with their animal allies (beasts of burden and war mounts), and able to influence the planet they're on into being living weapons by manipulating the flora.

Both of these would fall under the categories of telepathy and biomancy, respectively.

Tau Empire
The Tau race is incapable of producing psykers, due to having almost no presence in the Warp. The good news for them is that they don't have to worry about Bad Things, such as any members of their species spontaneously turning inside out from the anus and summoning an army of monsters that will fuck, kill, and eat people, (not strictly in that order). The bad news is that they have no way to natively develop psychically based technology, so their FTL travel is glacial, albeit a good deal safer than an actual Warp jump, and their FTL communications options are limited to the Space Pony Express. It should be noted that some of their vassal races have psychic abilities, including their own Navigator analogues. It is known that they actually locate, isolate and study human (and probably other species') psykers, but as the Immaterium is too irrational and far beyond their science they have had little success in analyzing the reason behind Gue'La suddenly going crazy and <s>summoning</s> teleporting armies of homicidal <s>hellspawn</s> aliens out of thin air. Of course, following what happened to the Fourth Sphere Expansion, they now have little reason to stay ignorant of those things that come from nowhere...
*Funnily, the Kroot have psykers (they have a diverse diet) and understand a great deal about the Immaterium. They even have some crude warp vessels, usually with purchased or stolen xeno tech in it.
*The Nicassar are another auxilia race that just happens to have psykers of their own, though their potency when compared to the big boys of the setting hasn't really been examined. Although for some reason BFG lore also established that they don’t even use FTL, they just piggy back rides on Tau ships. Before they met the Tau they would go into hibernation and travel slower than light between planets.

Necrons
The Necrons no longer have souls, so they have no presence in the Warp, and therefore can't manipulate it with their minds. And yet, they have managed to conquer the Warp with technology. (Egyptian Skeleton Zombie Robots, Yeah!) They keep fucking up the Warp and psykers with the gloom prisms they mount on their spiders, pylons (sounds familiar...), or even giant city-sized mechanisms that cut entire planets from the Warp. One in the Word Bearer novels even had...this thing, about the size of a resurrection orb, which blanketed an entire system in a "psychic black hole." Problem, daemons?

Before the 5e fluff changes, they also had Pariahs, specialized soldiers made from Blanks that acted like Culexus assassins.

Orks
The Orks are all passive psykers, or rather emanate their own gestalt "psykik" energy in the power of the WAAAGH!, though they're mostly unaware of this. A large number of Orks in one place will slightly alter reality to suit their wishes, turning jam-prone, dirty blunderbusses into fully-automatic rifles of rape. Weirdboyz are the only ones who can tap into it actively to manifest psychic powers, which have an amusing tendency to make Orks heads explode with absolutely no warning. As said above, the Orks draw psychic energy from each other, not from the Warp, which makes them virtually immune to Chaotic influences(but not completely immune), although they do have a pretty serious presence in the Warp in the form of Gork and Mork (or maybe the other way round).

Tyranids
The Tyranids are innate psykers, and their collective power goes into the Hive Mind, which is what the big bugs tap into to manifest psychic powers rather than the Warp, the same way a Weirdboy would tap into the WAAAGH!. Only a few bugs are capable weaponizing the Hive Mind's psychic energy, the Zoanthrope being one such option for Tyranid psychic support. Few 'Nid species beyond the Zoanthrope are capable of firing tank piercing mind-lasers. Instead the other big bugs use its powers for buffs and a form of control called "synapse", which keeps the Tyranid horde from going feral and killing everyone and everything they see. If the Hive Mind gets driven away from the horde or the synapse bug gets killed, the synapse link collapses and the 'Nids turn feral. Also, before Genestealers got retconned into being Tyranids, Genestealer Magi DID use the power of the Warp to power their abilities and could dedicate themselves to Chaos. There's an image of a Khorne Magus in one of the 2nd edition books, though that is nonsensical in itself given Khorne's view of psykers.

Psychic Power Hierarchy
The Imperium of Man uses a 24-point scale (with gradations named for the letters of the Greek alphabet, for some reason; there are 26 points counting the "top" and "bottom", both of which are used to classify entities beyond the scale's ability to measure) called The Assignment to determine the comparative psychic power of an individual. Unfortunately, this gets very confusing in the fluff, where Alpha-level psykers seem to be a dime-a-dozen and show up all over the place, and established characters that are canonically high on the scale are completely overshadowed by some other character. All of this "logically" leads neckbeards to reach the flawed conclusion that their favourite character on the tabletop MUST be Alpha level or greater.

Furthermore, it is canon that a psyker's place on the scale can change over time as his or her powers either increase with practice or decrease due to atrophy from lack of use. So generally, the fluff is quite useless for determining who is greater than whom; without the evidence of a direct psychic battle between any two comparing how they match up, it is pretty pointless to use this method.

Lastly, this is an Imperial system, and likely should be used only to assess humans. While chances are, someone in-universe has looked at a wyrdboy and gone "Theta-ish", you shouldn't since it's comparable to using metric tools on imperial sizes. Which is to say, it's annoying, inappropriate, and probably a crime according to both the Mechanicus and Administratum. So don't do it.

Positive Psychic Levels
#Alpha-Plus
#*Alpha-Plus psykers do not represent the top of the scale, but are completely beyond the scale. In fact, the scale theoretically continues upwards beyond Alpha-Plus into truly god-like tiers of power, although such individuals have never been encountered. Even so, Alpha-Plus individuals operate on a completely different wavelength from normal people and are owners of completely alien mindsets. In terms of power, they are akin to weapons of mass destruction, as in theory there is nothing that a trained Alpha-Plus psyker cannot accomplish through force of will. There is a tacit assumption that this category contains the Emperor and his "notably-psychic" Primarchs (especially Magnus the Red in his daemon Primarch form), but even he admitted there were limits on his power, specifically that one could not be both all-seeing and all-powerful at the same time. No attempt is made to distinguish power levels among members of this grade, because they're all so absurdly strong there's no point in quantifying it. To put it in context, an emergent Alpha Plus psyker - one not fully in control of their abilities - was able to destroy a starship, freeze time, put it back together and resurrect its crew from the dead before removing themselves permanently from the physical universe in an act of unparalleled self-control. To dumb it down for the rest of you idiots, that the same as snaping an Imperator Class Titan in half with a sneeze at HALF A SECTOR AWAY!
#Alpha / Beta
#*Exceedingly rare and dangerous. The Imperium believes that human beings have not sufficiently evolved enough to contain Beta and Alpha levels of psionic talent without going completely bat-shit mental, though exceptions do exist. Arvann Stern is confirmed to be of Beta level, and he's not even the most powerful psyker in his chapter. Most psykers of this power level are considered too dangerous to control and are likely to be sacrificed to power the Astronomican, while very unlucky Alpha psykers may instead find Imperial service in the Ordo Sinister, meaning they'll get turned into screaming batteries for Psi-Titans. The unluckiest Alphas and Betas get to be Grey Knights, and fight against daemons until a painful death in battle. The luckiest ones become specialized Astropaths whose predictions of the future are used by the Adeptus Custodes to find threats to Terra.
#Gamma / Delta
#*Approximately one out of every billion human births will produce a Delta- or Gamma-level psyker, who, for the Imperium, represent the "useful" upper limit of psychic potential without being too dangerous to let live, though it's up to the Inquisition to be the ultimate judge of that. Most psykers of this power are either slain or possessed if they are not discovered quickly by the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. The Inquisitor Gideon Ravenor was believed to be a high Delta-level psyker.
#Epsilon / Zeta
#*Epsilons and Zetas represent relatively powerful psykers, who are strong enough to be considered threats to security by the Imperium.
#Eta / Theta / Iota
#*Iota represents the first "true" psykers who are able to manifest and control psychic abilities with a modicum of training. Anything below this point is not considered a "true" Psyker.
#Kappa / Lambda / Mu / Nu / Xi / Omicron
#*People who can manifest psychic talents either unconsciously or so subtly as to be beneath the notice of everyone but the Inquisition, such as performing minor "magic" tricks, divinations, or other weird occurrences generally dismissed as good luck. Most of the time they are quite useless, but still represent a danger since they can be possessed. Although the Inquisition is too busy to sort out everyone at this level, the Imperial public is conditioned well enough to spot and ostracize these witches if the truth about them ever comes to light in their societies. Those that do get picked up by the Black Ships are generally considered not worth the risk of training and almost always receive a one-way trip to the Golden Throne to have some sort of use wrung out of them.
#Pi / Rho
#*Run-of-the-mill humans, neither psy-active nor psy-inert, but indisputably on the positive side because the negatives... get weird.

Negative Psychic Levels
#Sigma/Tau
#*When you start descending below the scale of humans, into the "negative" side of the scale, you start going psy-inert. People at the Sigma/Tau level would be able to perceive and be injured by an incoming fireball but may not be able to discern that it came from an unnatural source. It is believed the entire Tau species rests at this level.
#Upsilon / Phi / Chi / Psi (ironically)
#*These are individuals with varying degrees of immunity to psychic powers, though not to the same extent as a true Blank or Pariah.
#Omega
#*Usually referred to as Untouchables, Pariahs, or Blanks. Not only are they immune to psychic powers, but they can also inhibit the powers of psykers around them and/or neutralize psychic effects on an area around them. The Imperium often employs Blanks as an Inqusitor's servants, while the Sisters of Silence are a trained order of Psyker-huntresses that are all Blanks. The Eldar, believe it or not, also produce the occasional Blank, and these become the infamous Solitaires of the Harlequins. True Blanks have such a psy-negative effect that even normal people can sense it, and it manifests as an irrational loathing for the Blank, though in some cases it can be offset by either a good personality (Alizebeth Bequin) or an odd, but explainable character trait (Gunner Jurgen). For psykers however, Omega-level persons are physically and mentally painful to be near.
#*The fluff is a bit inconsistent on the exact limit of a Blank's ability, but that's fine, because in Dark Heresy, Blanks exhibit a broad range of effects which can be different from person to person, much like high-level psykers can have different powers and disciplines. It can also be trained and manipulated, as in the case of the Sisters of Silence. Others can train themselves to actually benefit from the psychic power they suck from their surroundings (having psykers or even normal living beings in those surroundings really helps), which they use to empower and invigorate themselves.
#*There have, however, been a few occasions where a Blank's abilities have been overwhelmed or even permanently shutdown. Bequin's blankness was overwhelmed by the warp corrupted psi-sentience of a Chaos Titan and Wystan Frauka's blankness was gradually eroded away over time until he was able to be possessed by a psyker. In Gathering Storm, when Khaine's Gate broke, all the strapped and likely sodomized Blanks that were chained to it and had been screaming for the past few decades either exploded into ludicrous gibs or got outright possessed. Alpha Plus Psykers like the Emperor can probably brute force their way through even the most unnaturally powerful blanks.
#Omega-Minus
#*Strictly limited to Culexus Assassins, who are given specialized equipment to maximize the effectiveness of their Blank abilities.

Other Factors
When you get further into the details, not only is sheer psychic potential a factor to consider in determining how powerful a psyker is, there are other things to consider when trying to figure out mechanically how one differs from another.

This is easier to do outside of the tabletop setting, which focusses on a d6 scale, where a minor difference in a single statistic can create one power tier an order of magnitude more effective above another.

Level of Control
The Willpower, discipline and training (read: control) of a given individual holds almost about as much sway in saying who is more powerful than who. This is most clearly represented in the RPG rules, but often shows up in the fluff particularly in instances where powerful but neophyte psykers are only coming to learn their powers (such as Da'Kir of the Salamanders, or Zahariel of the First Legion) A lot of commentators forget this and focus purely on psy-rating when attempting to compare psychic ability. Just because a psyker has a high psy rating, if their ability to control their powers are low then they are less likely to successfully manifest but are more likely to create a powerful effect when they do, this is in fact part of the reason why the Imperium considers them to be so dangerous. Inversely, a low-mid rated psyker with a strong grasp on his abilities is more likely to successfully manifest and is also more likely to be able to resist/counter incoming psychic effects.

Interestingly enough, even non-psykers with enough discipline and mental fortitude can be trained to resist psychic powers, yet does not mean they are necessarily psychically blunted themselves. Typically this ability comes in the form of intense indoctrination or rote training, or from sheer force of belief and faith to literally "Deny the Witch".

Sorcery
The second thing to consider is the whims of the Chaos Gods, (particularly Tzeentch). Sorcery is entirely separate from Psy Rating/Assignment and even a non-psyker with the correct rites and incantations can pull off similar (if not the same) manifestations as a true psyker. Back during the Horus Heresy, Erebus (and 30k Word Bearers with Burning Lore) is an example of this. Furthermore, although Khorne himself hates psykers and sorcery, the Daemonancers among his own followers do have access to rituals for summoning daemons, otherwise they would be solely reliant upon tears in the warp for receiving daemonic assistance. These ritualistic functions may have been carried over to 8th edition where every chaos character now has the ability to summon daemons (though this could just as plausibly be the champion calling out to his God and being rewarded with assistance while in a location where the realspace/warp barriers are thin or have already been broken)

A true psyker with access to sorcery can increase his power levels even higher and can easily outstrip more powerful psykers than himself, though Sorcery comes with its own perils and generally leads to Damnation and Corruption (no wonder big Emps put his foot down at the council of Nikaea)

Furthermore, certain favours gifted from the Gods also increase psychic output. It used to be that in days gone by, the Mark of Tzeentch used to enhance psychic potential on the tabletop. Nowadays it doesn't, but in the RPG it still does. But obviously once you've been marked by a God of Chaos, you're in their pocket forever, and you best do your utmost to keep them happy or you end up becoming that-which-shall-not-be-named.

Pushing
Separate from either issue is the fact that Psykers can theoretically increase their assignment rating for a brief instant, drawing surplus energies from the warp and "Pushing" their powers even further than should be possible, basically taking a gamble and temporarily adding MOAR power to their manifestation.

In both the rules and the fluff there are common instances of psykers being able to boost themselves and create larger effects or to overcome more powerful opponents. This was partially illustrated with the 7th Edition ruleset and the shared Warp Charge "Pool", where low level psykers could throw all available warp charges into a single power and overcome the abilities of a higher mastery opponent, albeit at considerable risk of Perils of the Warp.

However, not all psykers have the ability to do this to the same degree, and although not adequately shown on the tabletop such rules were presented in the RPG settings, which broadly fit the established fluff:
*Bound Psykers that is to say, nearly every Imperial psyker who has undergone a Sanctioning process [Including Librarians] or Soul-Binding; can only push themselves so much and they are at greater risk of something bad happening (ie: Perils of the Warp) when they do so.
*Unbound Psykers (Rogue Psykers / Sorcerers) on the other hand can push to even higher degrees of power but shit WILL hit the fan and can almost guarantee their manifested power will come with some form of unintended side effect when they do.
*Daemonic Psykers who attempt to push their powers can go yet higher, but are considerably more likely to cause dangerous psychic phenomena. However since their mere existence on the material plane can be considered a dangerous psychic phenomena they are less likely to be bothered by it unless it is a straight up Perils of the Warp.
Not to be confused with Barak-Mhornar, the Red Corsairs. A Kharadron Overlord fleet.

Space Pirate Space Marines? In my 40K? It's more likely than you'd think.

Who They Are
The Red Corsairs are a space pirate warband of renegade Marines; some following Chaos, some just in it for the plunder and self-aggrandizement. Even before their fall to chaos, these guys were considered the top-dogs in boarding actions, so piracy came pretty naturaly to them. Attacking from the Maelstrom, which is kind of like the anus to the Eye of Terror's vagina (no, really, the Night Lords of the Broken Aquila bitch about how filthy it is in comparison to the fucking Eye), they raid and pillage all over the Imperium of Man, stealing vehicles, armour, weapons, ships for their fleets, and basically anything in sight. Nailing it down does not help, as they would steal nails too, making them essentially the chaos Blood Ravens. They are well-known for their balls-out psychotic raids on Imperial Naval vessels and SPESS MEHREEN battle barges, in which they use boarding torpedoes to land and then assault the ship, taking it over to add to their makeshift navy. The Corsairs also have a number of not-marines, ranging from mercenaries and assorted scum to slaves captured by the Corsairs for the purposes of tending to their ships and equipment. They have a near-constant influx of loyalist Marines because once it becomes known that you're a fucking pirate, the ladies and ladymen are all down with that shit.

Their core is mostly composed of former Astral Claws, but much like the Black Legion they accept anyone who pledge his loyalty to their leader, and produce new marines from any gene-seed they can land their hands on, so you may find former loyalists (at lest a few Ultramarines and Space Wolves are confirmed), veterans of Heresy from the old legions, and a wide variety of Chaos-born neophytes, made with both traitor and loyalist gene-seed. With such a flexible recruitment policy it's not surprise Corsairs are the quickest growing Chaos force in entire Galaxy, and given time may even outgrow the Black Legion. It helps that you aren't even required to join Chaos to join the Red Corsairs. So long as you serve as an Astartes of the Red Corsairs, they couldn't care less what you worship.

Leader
Whilst the Corsairs operate in smaller strike groups, the ultimate leader of the Red Corsairs is the Pirate Lord of the Maelstrom, Huron Blackheart. Formerly known as Lufgt Huron (a name which to this day, /tg/ is unable to pronounce(either "Loofght" or "Lufag")), Huron used to be the chapter master of the Astral Claws. They were assigned to guard and patrol the Maelstrom, an area of warp/real space overlap in Ultima Segmentum.

While a decent leader, years of being left sidelined left him bored and pissed off, and he eventually said "fuck this" and decided to take over the planet Badab, where he and the claws conquered the world for themselves and demanded tithes in the name of the Imperium - which they then kept for themselves, getting three other Space Marine chapters to join them in holding the world and turning into their own private little vacation-spot. Huron became known as the "Tyrant of Badab" for his forceful style of leadership. The Claws (and Huron) finally rushed past the moral event horizon when the Imperial Navy sent a small strike group to Badab to kick his ass.

Huron's forces repelled it, but the Imperial Navy had finally had enough of their shit and brought in a battery of heavy-duty ships to finish the job, and sent in Stormtroopers, along with a shitton of Space Marines in the conflict that came to be known as the Badab War. Huron's forces took a major beating, and Huron himself got half of his fucking body blown off by a pissed-off Star Phantoms Captain packing a Meltagun. Legend has it, after a failed attempt at him he put his terminator boot on a dead strike team leader's chestplate (presumably to take a selfie), but the captain turned out not quite dead and shot him in the armpit point-blank with a melta instead. Oh, vanity. Barely alive, Huron's troops grabbed their master and hauled ass for the one area the Imperium wouldn't chase them through - the Maelstrom. After a few weeks, a shitload of bionics (he had to have most of the right side of his body replaced), and a little help from the Ruinous Powers, Lord Apothecary Garreon, Apothecary Secundus Variel, and Master of the Forge Armanneus Valthex (guys who had earned the nicknames "the Corpse Master", "the Flayer", and "the Alchemancer", respectively) successfully put Huron back together, and he began to rebuild his personal empire through piracy, bit by bit.

Huron himself claims to be Chaos' answer to Colonel "Vance Motherfucking Stubbs is my Poker Buddy" Straken, but everyone knows that's a load of bullshit.

Namesake & History
"Corsair" means pirate, and they use red "paint" to obliterate their former Chapter livery. Ergo, Red Corsairs. Not exactly a great name, but it's hard to argue that it doesn't work.

Historically thought corsairs where not pirates in the traditional sense. A corsair would be someones commissioned by a certain government, say Spain or Britain, to operate freely against the navy or ships of another opposing government.

Basically a country might decide to let a captain raid their enemies stuff as long as the captain only hurt their enemies that is a win. As the navies of even the British empire could not completely control the open seas. But with time and as the practice waned the terms pirate and corsair started becoming interchangeable. And to a poor civilian merchant getting looted it does not really matter that the corsair has a license or not, to them both are pirates.

This makes the name corsair make some sense in context considering they are technically 'commissioned' by the Chaos Gods to raid the Imperium.

Rise of the Red Corsairs and Fifth Edition
Long before Matt Ward somehow managed to make the Smurfs more hated than they already were - something /tg/ had long since thought impossible - the Chaos Codex had gotten a reasonable update. Most of it was streamlining, pure and simple, but a lot of it was done with the intent to make Chaos forces of every stripe that much more viable and to put an end to the godless faggotry that was Emperor's Children Noise Marine spam raping entire armies in the opening salvo (for example). Players wanted more flexibility with their choices, more opportunities to play with unique options, (WTF are you smoking? CSM 4.0 took away so much stuff) and less ridiculously unbalanced exclusive shit that ruined everything (read: Iron Warriors fielding squads upon squads of Obliterators backed by Basilisks). With so many changes to the system, Chaos largely got nerfed and saw marked improvements in a few areas (at the cost of all the unique legion rules, pages of wargear and mutations, and anything else that made them stand out from vanilla marines), but since nobody liked the Black Legion or its retarded leader Abaddon, a long-available but largely unsung chapter, the Red Corsairs, got pushed into prominence.

Before being cunt-punted back into a paragraph and Huron's special character page, in favour of a bunch of no-name not-World Eaters.

Vigilus Ablaze grants them tabletop rules, which are quite possibly the best out of any of the Chaos Space Marine subfactions. Not only can they advance and charge (the old generalist Renegade Chapter trait which already was pretty good), but now they get extra command points from detachments with three or more units. This is also in addition to an update on their war with the White Scars. Long story short, they wrecked shit and kidnapped Chapter Master Jubal Khan. The remaining Scars then had to stage a raid to free the hostages, but by this point Jubal was so damaged that he wouldn't be able to do much. As of present, they're still within the area and are continuing with raids around the sector as Huron establishes a new capital.

Lord General Freddie Stalin "Mercury" Melchett-Castor is the Imperial commander of the Cadian forces sent to fix all the weird shit going on in sub-sector Aurelia.

Retribution
After hearing many reports of Aurelia's frequent problems and the Imperial Guardsmen's inability to get shit done, <s>Castor</s> Adrastia decided that enough was enough and decided to take matters into her own hands and started a party. Castor was invited because she doesn't like tactics and he does. He accompanied Inquisitor Adrastia and Commissar LORD Bernn. He later met up with Sergeant Merrick after he was incapacitated during a Tyranid ambush (Which he joked that Merrick may still be "salvageable"). After killing the Tyranid Hive Tyrant and adding its head to his ridiculously enormous collection of trophies, he was informed that the Ordo Malleus would perform Exterminatus on the entire sub-sector (Ordered by the corrupted Chapter Master Azariah Kyras). Castor assisted Adrastia in her investigation. After finding evidence of Kyras' corruption, they proceeded to travel to the planet Typhon to confront Kyras for his HERESY. After killing the Eldar stationed there, they discovered, too late, from Kyras, that the Eldar were actually preventing the Exterminatus fleet from entering the sub-sector. So after escaping the planet, teleporting to a space hulk and escaping from said space hulk, Castor finally confronted the now transformed Mega-Uber Daemon Prince Kyras in the dead world of Cyrene. After a SHORT battle (Seriously, the massive Guard army Castor brings makes it piss easy), Kyras is defeated.

About Castor
Castor is arrogant, cocksure, sarcastic, laid back and a huge glory-hog. He has the voice of a upper-class Englishman, has the looks of an older Freddie Mercury and sometimes, the mannerisms of a colonial big game hunter. (So he also ACTS like Freddie Mercury... kidding) He has absolutely no qualms of sending countless guardsmen to their deaths just so that he could make another gargantuan effort to move his trophy cabinet six inches closer to the enemy base. He does this for the lulz. He has a fetish for collecting dangerous creatures and xenos heads (particularly Tyranids) for his impossibly fuckehuge collection. Despite being seen as a proud, boastful and quite clueless general, he is very intelligent and cunning. He even knew that Kyras was on Cyrene, due to the fact that Cyrene had already undergone Exterminatus and was therefore passed over by the currently operating Exterminatus fleet( you don't have to be a genius for understanding that anyway, considering that a certain ork kaptin find that out too.)

Having lost his left arm, he replaced it with a bionic replacement that allows him to wield weapons like sniper rifles, flamers, meltas, bolter guns, or plasma guns with only one hand. He also wields a sabre in his relatively intact right hand. He can kill space marines and tyranid warriors in melee, which is awesome, and with the melta he becomes a rape machine with his retinue. Seriously, spam the fuck out of meltas in the IG campaign and everything will die ridiculously fast.

Unlike many other Imperial Lord Generals, Castor is badass enough to get right into the fighting and is a very skilled fighter and a balls out badass, more than making up for the fact that besides his mechanical arm, he's just a regular human in carapace armour. This combination of traits has elevated Castor to the same lofty heights of Cain, Gaunt, and Sturnn in terms of Imperial Guard characters. Plus god damn that moustache.

According to the 'The Battle of Tyrok Fields' by Justin D. Hill, Ursakar Creed had an adjutant by the name of Castor. We may reasonably presume that, with so many senior officers killed at Tyrok Fields, Castor received a promotion for his efforts, grew an awesome mustache, and was packed off to Aurelia.

Quotes
(After saving Sergeant Merrick from a Tyranid ambush)<br>
Merrick: "Thank you, General. I thought this might finally be it."<br>
Castor: "Your lack of cowardice is refreshing, Sergeant Major, but your weakness is typical of this sector. I'll toughen you up, or use you up. Perhaps both as the Imperium requires."

(After encountering the Tyranid Hive Lord)<br>
Castor: "A magnificent specimen, don't you agree Merrick?"<br>
Adrastia: "You admire the horror, General?"<br>
Castor: "Indeed. Its head will go nicely in my trophy collection. Aim low."

(After defeating the Hive Lord)<br>
Castor: "This beast is strong but strength is no match for intelligence and resolve."<br>
Merrick: "Or large caliber explosive rounds, for that matter."<br>
Castor: "Now you're getting into the spirit, Sergeant Major."

(After the group narrowly escapes from the Exterminatus of the planet Typhon. It's important to keep in mind Merrick begins the following conversation by striking Castor with the butt of his rifle and spends the rest of it with Commissar LORD Bernn's pistol pointed at his head as well as a grumpy Inquisitor who hates him standing three feet away. Balls of steel indeed)<br>
Merrick: "You bloody arrogant fool!"<br>
Castor: "Merrick! Stand down!"<br>
Merrick: You killed them all, Castor! All of them, gone, because of your incompetence!"<br>
Castor: "You think I'm incompetent? Sergeant Major, the destruction of Typhon was inevitable. Between the Eldar, Orks and Tyranids there was no saving that world. At worst I helped speed its demise. And at a time when there were relatively few men on the planet."<br>
Merrick: "Few? Few?! There were THOUSANDS of guardsmen on Typhon! Good men, serving the Emperor, and you let them all die!"<br>
Castor: "Merrick, a guardsman's LIFE is to die. My job has always been to send them to places where they CAN die. I'm not afraid to spend them, but I never waste men. Because of their sacrifice the Inquisitor has the proof she needs. You do have the proof you need, don't you, Inquisitor?"<br>
Adrastia: "I FELT Kyras. What was inside him. He is not...alone."<br>
Castor: "Then I suggest we find him so we can end this once and for all."<br>
Adrastia: "Where? I was inside his mind and still could not tell you that."<br>
Castor: "ONE planet will be spared, because it has already been cleansed. Decades ago."<br>
Merrick: "Cyrene?"<br>
Castor: "Where better to hide than a dead world? Kyras will be waiting there, I promise you, feeding on the death of the other worlds."<br>
Merrick: "And...and you knew this all along?"<br>
Castor: "Much of it. He's not as clever as he thinks he is. I put the rest together on Typhon. Now, Sergeant Major, you can proceed with your attempt to kill me. But as I mentioned, I don't waste men if I can avoid it, and killing you for insubordination would be very...wasteful. Are you with me?"<br>

(After the group's defeat of the ascended Azariah Kyras and Inquisitor Adrastia's departure)<br>
Merrick: "Can't say I'm sorry to see her go, sir."<br>
Castor: "I share your sentiments, Sergeant Major. Though it's a poor excuse for an Inquisitor that doesn't make people uncomfortable. You are to be commended on your performance these past few days. Which is why I am putting you in for a medal, and not having you shot for insubordination."<br>
Merrick: "Thank you sir. And you've turned out to be a good commander. *under his breath* Which is why I didn't have you shot for incompetence."<br>
Castor: "What was that?"<br>
Merrick: "I said I was shocked by your competence, sir."<br>
Castor: "Baaaah! That's what I thought you said. Carry on, Sergeant Major...carry on."

Trivia
* He's voiced by Richard Doyle. Quite known as the voice of Ulyoath and Pious Augustus from Eternal Darkness, The Fury and Big Boss (This makes his ability to deploy a squad from a flying box meta AF) from Metal Gear Solid, Enoch from Ben 10 and Moebius from The Legacy of Kain.
* He may be descended from Blackadder's General Melchett. Which may explain his habit of sending millions of guardsmen to their deaths.
* There is no mention of Castor in the Cain archives, even though the two almost certainly served together. This may have something to do with an incident involving a psyber pigeon message courier, or the untimely death of Castor's fiancée.
* He has a mustache that would make all the Imperial commanders jealous which, if a space marine had, would make even him collapse to ground unless the marine is wearing terminator armor.
* He's Creed's second cousin; despite the fact that said cousin rarely mentions him and vice-versa. (Crap is this true or a lame excuse for a joke?...)
* At least during the Aurelia Campaign, he was authorized by said cousin to use a slightly less powerful -but still incredibly useful- version of Tactical Genius. Sadly, he can't turn rocks into Baneblades, (at least, not yet) but woe to the unfortunate foe who sees a Valkyrie Transport dropping a Metal Box in the middle of the battlefield (Even aboard an uncharted space hulk accessed through a collapsing teleportarium). Said box may turn into either infantry or a Leman Russ. There's a reason why it's been nicknamed the Box of Rape.
* Lost his left arm after having it eaten by a Hierophant Bio-Titan during the battle of Philippinia VII.
* Aforementioned Hierophant Bio-Titan's head is now on his Trophy wall.
* Has an Impossibly HUEG Trophy Room.
* Said Trophy Room has the head of every single Tyranid species/sub-species ever encountered by the Imperium... EVER.
* He's also manly enough to ask noise marines if they can hear him say 'shoot them now'.
* What's even more awesome than the things before this, is that he references Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition. Seriously. In the mission where you are ordered to destroy an Eldar Seer Council, he says this: 'We have lost the element of surprise, and they do not fear us. Perhaps they will appreciate our devotion to the Emperor and our ruthless efficiency.' The original Monty Python sketch told us the Spanish Inquisition relied on five elements: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope and nice red uniforms. Castor must have been raised properly that he references Monty Python.
* Every hair in Castor's mustache has killed more 'nids alone than entire space marine chapters put together.
* He KILLS Space Marines in melee. MELEE!!!!! Not every commander in the IG can do that
The Mortifactors are a Primogenitor Chapter who REALLY do not get on with their forefathers, despite the fact that they follow the codex and are the second sons of the XIII Legion. Also they can be total dicks, leaving their allies if they don't feel like fighting for something that matters.

History
The differences between them are mostly cultural rather than doctrinal, and (like the Fenrisians) is more a result of the homeworld they decided to inhabit than anything else.

Posul is the stereotypical savage world, almost completely dark due to having a thick, smoky atmosphere, and is populated by cannibalistic tribal warriors who constantly wage war upon one another. This is probably contributed to by the fact that any night world will have little to no plant life, so the population would have to become carnivores and often cannibals by necessity, and like any world in the Imperium, humans are rarely in short supply. Never mind that this really wouldn't work because carnivores are far less energy efficient than herbivores or plants. And never mind this wouldn't work since ecosystems have to have producers at the bottom anyhow, and meat-eaters are just getting those nutrients secondhand. Posul probably had more fungus than plants, but the name of the bottom-producer doesn't particularly matter here. (There are no plants or Fungi in the artic or the bottom of the sea and those places function fine with exclusively carnivore.)

Their chapter Fortress-Monastery is a massive space station that orbits the planet. Its halls are filled with rows of engraved skulls, the final resting place of fallen brothers - while the chapels and shrines of the chapter are filled with the skulls of enemies who have been defeated.

Very peculiarly, the Chaplains of the Mortifactors are chosen exclusively from the shamans of Posul, which is probably a massive contributory factor to the behaviour of the chapter. Their typical rites involve copious amounts of blood-letting and shared blood drinking, where the enhanced physiologies of the Astartes will interpret the combination of visions to determine future battle plans.

Furthermore, once a battle has been won, they will go amongst the fallen enemies and consume portions of their flesh (presumably where it is safe to do so) before collecting the skulls of worthy foes to return to the chapter. To outsiders this makes them little better than extreme savages at best and outright Heretics at worst. (Of course, the Omniphagus organ that space marines possess allows them to gain tactical information from feeding on fallen foes. While few chapters do so as openly, fewer still are the chapters that do not partake at all.)

Apparently, they had very little contact with the other Primogenitors, being generally treated with suspicion but little outright antipathy. The full extent of their differences only really came to light when Uriel Ventris fought alongside them against the Tyranids, much to the disgust of the Ultramarines. However on that occasion the Mortifactors had the backing of the Inquisition and so nothing was settled between the chapters.

Lastly, their current Chapter Master is Lord Magyar ("Magyar" being the Hungarian word for, well, Hungarian). Lord Magyar is noticeable for wearing artificer armor crafted entirely from bones. He also carries a war scythe and features a winged skeletal familiar perched atop his throne. Most Astartes estimate Lord Magyar to be around 700 years old, but nobody is really sure. In short, this guy knows how to reap a bountiful harvest of death, and has the gear to show for it. In fact, the Mortifactors seem to be pretty damn good at killing shit. They really put the "Death" in "Angels of Death".

Another notable figure from the Mortifactors chapter is Watch Captain Artemis.

Relics
One controversial relic the Mortifactors owned was Roboute Guilliman's combat knife, though it remains unknown how they came to possess it. It caused them no end of trouble because the other primogenitors would protest that such deviants were holding a relic of their primarch. Guilliman himself would probably be incapable of comprehending why anyone would give a damn about a knife.

It was only when the Lord of Macragge interceded that the Mortifactors gave up the relic. But rather than surrender it to the Ultramarines or any other descendant of Guilliman, they trolled the Ultramarines by entrusting it to the Deathwatch for safe-keeping instead, where it might be still used by Mortifactors who swear oaths to the Ordo Xenos. Ironically, regardless of their true origins, Guilliman is the sort of person who would rather his wargear be used for humanity than kept in a vault or museum or whatever.

Canon Conflict?
In a bit of strange, fucked up idiocy, Posul was declared as having been destroyed by Hive Fleet Leviathan as of 997.M41. This would mean the Mortifactors lost their home-world only a year prior to their largest deployment. With their fielding of all 10 companies in 998.M41 at the Third War for Armageddon, it begs to be asked if perhaps the Chapter had resigned themselves to a glorious death on the fields of battle rather than restore their chapter and continue fighting for the Emperor. On the one hand, it would make tons of sense if this were the case, as the Mortifactors have a very strong set of beliefs regarding the afterlife - namely, that their dead get to feast with "the Ultimate Warrior" (a divine being that inhabits the perfect body for fighting prowess, which could very well be the Big E pre-Heresy (or maybe he is that other Ultimate Warrior)) in the Hall of Victors. On the other hand, these dates are always subject to some revision, thanks to Games Workshop's dubious stance on canon consistency.

Also there's that Deathwatch short story where their Chapter Master gets decapitated by an Eldar witch so...
