As Wizards of the Coast learned their lessons with the 3.5 and 4th editions of Dungeons and Dragons, the release rate of books for the fifth edition has been substantially slower. This has had three benefits and one drawback of concern to the players who aren't obsessives who hoover up every single product of their favorite flavor of RPG like an air recirculator on a nuclear submarine.

The first benefit is that Wizards' senior editorial staff and game designers, namely Mike Mearls, Christopher Perkins, Jeremy Crawford, and the editorial core of the Seattle office of Wizards of the Coast, write every major publication themselves after the mess of Princes of the Apocalypse. That, in turn, means that the people who wrote each and every rule have final veto on whether or not material enters the canon of tabletop rulings and stats, and so it doesn't feel like it was designed by committee like later 3.5 materials clearly were. The second is that the financial cost of keeping current on the adventures, splats, rules, and optional setting material is far lower than with 3.5's torrent of material. The third is that the rules of the core game do not change, and that therefore there are rarely, if ever, causes for DMs and players to argue over the contents and design of the rules, since the rules aren't spread over a dozen books and fifty errata articles (looking at you, 4th edition).

The obvious drawback is that groups that chew through official material have got a LONG time to wait between modules. The release schedule of official 5e adventures, especially Adventurers' League canon adventure paths, is easily outpaced by a brisk group. There are a few exceptions, like how Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage can easily run a campaign for well over a year even with rapid levelling, given the sheer SIZE of Undermountain, but that is scarce. There are alternatives, of course, like homebrew material, and of course the expansions to the official modules sold on DM's Guild, but the near-total lack of replaybility on every 5e hardback except the aforementioned Dragon Heist (thanks to having four mutually-exclusive villains you can plug into the campaign to compete with the party) means that homebrewing filler adventures is all but mandatory for parties.

Here is a list of all hard-copy publications of Fifth Edition. There are well over a hundred smaller adventure bundles on DM's Guild, plus the CCC-x modules that are only runnable at conventions, which we're not going to even try listing here.

There are well over a hundred smaller adventure bundles on DM's Guild, plus the CCC-x modules that are only runnable at conventions, which we're not going to even try listing here.
dnd-stub

Cegilune is a lesser monster deity in the multiverse of Dungeons & Dragons. Debuting in Monster Mythology, she is the patron goddess of hags, and through them of witches; residing on the Grey Wastes of Hades, she is the queen of the night hags, and thus is the patron deity of the soul larvae which those fiendish hags herd and sell to the other fiendish races. She was updated to 3rd edition in Dragon Magazine #345, as part of the Ecology of the Annis Hag article; before that, she had also made an appearance in Dragon Annual #2. Cegilune appears as a filthy hag with yellow-brown skin. She may also appear as a young human or elf woman, or as a homely old lady. Very rarely, she'll manifest as a scruffy orc or goblinoid woman. In all of her forms, she carries a small iron pot.

According to myths told by the ogres and hill giants, Cegilune was once a beautiful, silver-haired goddess of the moon. Her priestesses were granted special powers to further her worship: those known as the Songs of Cegilune were granted beautiful voices, her prophets were given the ability to walk on water, and her protectors were given great strength.

As the Age wore on, fickle Cegilune grew complacent, and new deities usurped her worship. As her veneration declined, wrinkles began to appear on her lovely face, and those priestesses she called her daughters began to age as well. Enraged, Cegilune dispatched her daughters to slaughter hundreds of her former followers.

This expended most of her power, leaving Cegilune and her daughters wrinkled crones. Other deities, enraged by this violation of the sanctity of the Prime Material Plane, rose against her and drove her into the underworld. With this final corruption of their goddess, the daughters of Cegilune were corrupted as well, the Songs becoming green hags, the prophets becoming sea hags, and the protectors becoming the dreaded annis.

Cegilune is worshiped in grisly shrines near the cauldrons of her followers, where she is offered both praises and curses every night, culminating in a ceremony held under the full moon nearest the Winter Solstice, when her worshipers compete to inflict the greatest suffering in the blood sacrifices they offer their fell patron.

Cegilune is believed to be related to the sylvan deities. Some say she is the dark twin of Titania, queen of the fey, herself. It is alleged that if either Titania or Cegilune were to die, both goddesses would perish.

Cegilune has no allies, although she has dealings with some of the evil gods of the giants. She is said to have mated with Grolantor, and as such is considered one of the ancestresses of the hill giant race. She may be one of those who tutored his brother Karontor. She has many enemies among the sylvan gods.

Some centuries ago, the night hags waged war against the lich-god Mellifleur, who had seized control of the larva trade in one region of the Lower Planes. The hags created the altraloth Typhus in order to combat him. However, Mellifleur would not dare to attack Cegilune directly, for she protects her essence with numerous soul-gems hidden from his gaze and protected with powerful contingency spells.

Cegilune makes her lair in the realm of Hagsend in Pluton, the third gloom of the Gray Waste of Hades. She is said to dwell in a filthy, bone-strewn cave halfway up a bleak mountain of desolate black rock. There, she endlessly stirs her cauldron; a full moon hovers over it.

Cegilune is feared by sylvan beings as a dark and bloody stalker, and even hags despise their goddess, hating her for what she has made of them, respecting only her power. They fear her greed, believing she will take from them that which is rightfully theirs.

Cegilune rules the night hags with an iron fist, sending them forth to gather larvae for her use.
}}
The Great Mother is the matron deity of the Beholder species in the majority of D&D settings. She is believed to have given birth to the entire race. They believe this regardless of who their actual parent is; because of their hugely inflated egos Beholders believe themselves to be born from the Great Mother directly. Each one remembers their birth as a divine moment where the deity wishes the newborn well and sends it on its way-- conveniently forgetting the role of the actual parent, who eats all the Beholder babies they thinks look ugly (which is all of them) and kicking the rest out of their lair because they don't like company.

Beholders believe that the Great Mother knows everything in the multiverse but do not consider her a deity of knowledge, mostly because she does not communicate with her followers in any meaningful way.

It would be a massive blow to the ego of Beholders if they ever found out that the Great Mother possesses a mind completely unlike that of her children. Despite her vast knowledge, she is unintelligent and completely insane ands acts mainly on instinct. This explains why the Great Mother is chaotic evil while her children are lawful evil.

Worshippers
The Great Mother has no actual clergy among Beholders. This is because each Beholder believes that they are direct offspring of their god and all other Beholders are malformed heretics who need to be put down. However, the Great Mother does have plenty of followers from non-Beholder races. What's interesting is that although the Great Mother does not speak to her worshippers, she is happy enough to grant power and spells to anyone who prays for it, and will even grant spells on behalf of Clerics who worship individual Beholders, who might not even know that the Great Mother exists.

Ocular Adept
Ocular Adept is a prestige class for humanoid followers of the Great Mother. To become one, they first have to approach a Beholder and convince it not to eat or disintegrate them. After the hard part is over they enter into a surgical pact, where a Beholder-kin eyeball is implanted in their forehead. This provides them a link to the Great Mother's power and allows them to perform eyebeam attacks similar to true Beholders. Furthermore, the dying spasms of the creature that the eyeball came from are often taken as divine whispers handed down from the Great Mother herself.

Ocular Adepts have a separate divine spellcasting progression up to level 5 spells, which is in line with that of a Cleric. However, the Great Mother grants more low-level spells than a Cleric and only a few high-level ones. This is because while the Great Mother is "happy" enough to accept followers from non-Beholder races, she prefers to reserve high level spell power for those who really deserve it.

Realm
The Great Mother makes her home in the 6th layer of the Abyss called the Realm of a Million Eyes. The layer is an infinite cavern of tunnels and chambers, populated by every kind of Beholder-kin, and the Great Mother is believed to constantly birth new ones. The walls, ceilings and floors of the realm are dotted with eyes, making attempts at concealment nearly impossible considering that you're being watched all of the time. The eyes are believed to be those of the Great Mother herself, meaning that she practically is the layer.

The realm is a horrendously dangerous place for visitors, even the Tanar'ri avoid this layer of their own plane. The realm was apparently first discovered by Illithids, who declared that it must be the source of all corruption and foulness in the multiverse and then attempted to destroy it. It says a lot when even the Mind Flayers think the realm needs to be wiped out because it's too corrupt.
Despite all Beholders believing that they are the direct progeny of the Great Mother and therefore deserving of divine status, Gzemnid is a case of this actually being true, and is the only spawn of the Great Mother who has reached divinity themselves.

Also called the "Gas Giant", Gzemnid is the deity of mist, fogs and obscurement. He is a subtle creature, with no known priesthood. Beholders as a species tend to only acknowledge themselves and the Great Mother as worthy of veneration, though some of the older Beholders do know of him and carry tales of his exploits, so his legacy is maintained at the very least.

Gzemnid is more active with other races however; and has been known to send omens to mortal wizards, signalling that the spellcaster has some magical item that Gzemnid wants, then will follow by sending its avatar shortly afterward to parlay for it. Gzemnid is said to be particularly interested in illusion magic, but appears content to collect and hoard items and lore from all over the planes.

Gzemnid keeps his cache of magical treasures and lore hidden somewhere in his labyrinthine realm. Though he is not as aggressively direct as most Beholders, he constantly defends against intruders though the use of illusions and fog, eventually exhausting his opponent and forcing them to give up or tire to the degree that he can slay them. However he is also willing to enter negotiations with powerful intruders and trade with them to make them go away.

Realm
Gzemnid's realm is located in the Outlands, which is a patchwork of random underground tunnels that intertwine with the same realm as Ilsensine. It is thought that the two of them hold an alliance, though it is also thought that Gzemnid has purposefully mingled his realm with the lawful Illithid deity in order to keep the pair of them anchored in neutrality so that their respective realms do not drop into other planes.

The reason for this is suspected that Gzemnid is attempting to hide from some foe or another, perhaps the Great Mother herself. Though that is only conjecture, since Gzemnid isn't really forthcoming with information.
Abbathor is the Dwarf God of Greed in Dungeons & Dragons. He is unique in two aspects; he is not only one of the oldest members of the Morndinsamman, having first appeared in Dragon Magazine #58 alongside the other initial members of the dwarf pantheon - Berronar Truesilver, Clangeddin Silverbeard, Dumathoin and Vergadain, he was also the only evil member of the dwarven pantheon to still be recognized as part of that pantheon, instead of being outcast like Laduguer, Deep Duerra, Diinkarazan and Diirinka, until the invention of Roknar in Races of Stone for Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition.

1st Edition
Detailed, as mentioned above, in Dragon Magazine #58, Abbathor is described as a distrusted and unpredictable occasional-ally, occasional-foe of the other dwarven deities. Selfish and greedy to the core, he will only aid dwarves, when he can bothered to aid anybody.

That said, he wasn't always a jerk; once, long ago, he was merely the dwarven god of gems and precious metals, responsible for their admiration but in an artistic sense more than an avaricious one. And then Moradin chose to appoint Dumathoin as the racial protector of the mountain dwarves, and this embittered Abbathor; he believed that such a role belonged to him. So, he distanced himself from the Morndinsamman, sinking into deviousness and self-serving behavior as he became consumed with the urge for revenge. To this end, he seeks to encourage the growth of greed as the dominant force within the dwarven psyche, as an act of spite against his one-time family.

Abbathor is described as being literally compelled by his greed; his statblock gives him a 40% chance to be overwhelmed by greed should he set eyes upon any magical item, or on treasure with more than 1000 gold pieces. If that happens, he has a 50-50 chance of either trying to steal what's caught his eye or trying to kill the original owner; if he can't steal it, he'll try to destroy it out of sheer spite.

He is described as maintaining an uneasy truce with Vergadain, over their shared love of roaming the Prime Material in pursuit of treasure.

2nd Edition
Like most demihuman deities, AD&D 2nd edition saw Abbathor's lore relegated to a Forgotten Realms splatbook, the simply named "Demihuman Deities".

This lore mostly built upon the fairly brief lore from Dragon #58. As such, it's explained that Abbathor was once merely the dwarven god of gems and precious metals, but fell to evil due to bitterness when he lost out being appointed as patron god of the mountain dwarves to Dumathoin. Now, he strives to promote the worst aspects and major weaknesses of dwarven character out of his spite.

As in D#58, he maintains an uneasy truce with Vergadain, but is estranged from the rest of the pantheon. He deeply hates Moradin and Dumathoin, shares a bitter mutual enmity with Clanggedin Silverbeard, and is loathed by Berronar Truesilver for his deceitful nature. That said, he hasn't been expelled because, for all the distrust and the fact he embodies the worst traits of their people, he's still loyal to the dwarves as a whole and will stand with the Morndinsamman in times of crisis.

Tough luck for anybody else who might need his help if they aren't a dwarf, though.

According to "Demihuman Deities", Abbathor appears as a tall, fat, piggy-eyed dwarf with sallow skin, a squat, hunched build, yellow-green eyes, and a sharp, hooked nose. He seems to slither and sidle along as he walks, never making much noise but often rubbing his hands together. If carrying precious stones or metals, he often unconsciously touches them, frequently caressing them in a sensuous manner. He has a harsh, husky, wheedling voice and a quick temper, hissing and spitting when angry.

...Yeah, you can tell why this was dropped in 3rd edition, can't you?

His greed has gotten even worse than in 1st edition; now he automatically attempts to steal from or murder anybody carrying magical items or treasure worth more than 1000 gold pieces.

Abbathor manifests his influence in six ways:
* Inflicting a sudden intense treasure lust that can drive victims to seize treasure even at the expense of killing whoever stands in their way.
* Causing a dwarf to be suddenly made aware of the precise location, nature and value of hidden gems within 10 feet
* Dropping a 1-turn-long Silence & Darkness 15ft Radius spell on a dwarf who is trying to escape after stealing something.
* Trying to make coins & gems leaps from an opened treasure chest or a disturbed hoard pile to conceal themselves so he can pilfer them later.
* In response to his name being spoken, an invisible hand may snatch and clutch at the purse, pockets, worn jewelry or sacks of the speaker, potential pilfering lose items.
* Jewels near to either Abbathor's avatar or somebody he is focusing on will begin making a high-pitched, multitoned chiming.

Abbathor-worshipping specialist clerics and cleric-thieves cannot turn undead before 7th level, and suffer a -4 level penalty to determine their turning ability, but gain a +2 bonus to their attack & damage rolls against the undead. Specialist Clerics of Abbathor can use any type of weapon. In the Dwarven language, the specialist priests of Abbathor are called an Aetharnor, meaning "those consumed with greed".

Although he is publically reviled in dwarven society, his influence is strong enough that he is begrudgingly accepted, sort of like a disreputable member of the clan who has nonetheless never done anything bad enough to warrant being kicked out. He temples consist of underground caverns of secret, windowless rooms dominated by massive, plain blocks of stone; these serve as sacrificial altars where offerings are burnt. The rest of the chamber is richly decorated, with gold leaf on the walls and caches of purloined treasure - the holiest temples of Abbathor are the captured lairs of dragons.

Novitates in the faith of Abbathor are called Goldseekers, whilst full-fledged priests are referred to as the Hands of Greed. In ascending order of rank, Abbathoran priests are called: Coveters of Copper, Seekers of Silver, Lusters of Electru, Hoarders of Gold, Plunderers of Platinum, and Misers of Mithral. The high priests are collectively known as the Masters of Greed, but they take their own unique titles.

Abbathor's Dogma is simple: "Seek to acquire all that shines or sparkles, and revel in the possession of such. The wealth of the earth was created for those dwarves strong and crafty enough to acquire it by any means necessary. Greed is good, as it mlotivates the acquisition and holding of all that is truly precious. Do not seize wealth from the children of the Morndinsamman, however, nor conspire against the favored of Abbathor, for such strife in the name of avarice weakens the clan."

This last aspect of Abbathor's dogma is called "Abbathor's Commandment", and is frequently used to chide potentially over-eager dwarven thieves. The Abbathorans do not like to remember that this was uttered purely in order to preserve some members of the faith after angry fellow dwarves had slaughtered thief after thief in the robes of Abbathor's clergy.

That said, Abbathor's more powerful priests do secretly work to slowly undermine the faiths of Dumathoin and Berronar Truesilver. As this must be done without giving themselves away as traitors or endangering the rest of the clan, it's somethign they approach with great care and at a slow pace.

In daily life, the Abbathorans seek to enrich dwarfkind as a whole, and themselves in particular. Whilst every Abbathoran is looking to build up a damn huge cache of loot to retire upon, they also seek to contribute to common dwarven profit. Being who they are, they focus predominantly on shady or underhanded arrangements; smuggling and assassination is common. Perhaps worse still, the Abbathorans are willing to trade with anyone in pursuit of filthy lucre; dwarves have literally fallen to fine-quality dwarven axes wielded by orcs who were sold those axes by the Abbathorans!

Solar eclipses, or any other day when the sun is suddenly blotted out, such as during a volcanic eruption, are holy days in the Abbathoran chuch.

The most holy rite of the Abbathoran church is a yearly sacrifice of an enemy of the dwarf race, which can be "anything from an elf to a boar". Orcs, trolls and giants are preferred. Such a creature is strapped to the altar and killed, then the faithful offer gems, which are placed within the blood staining the altar - the more valuable the offering, the greater it is believed Abbathor will benefit the offerer in the next year. Then the corpse and its gems are all burnt.

Priests of Abbathor always dress in red - a brilliant scarlet, specifically, which is worn as underclothing for everyday use and as over-robes for ceremonial occasions. Over this is worn leather armor with leather caps (never helms), or else dark crimson robes. No priest of Abbathor will ever wear wealth openly.

The holy symbol of the faith is a gold coin (2 inches in diameter, minimum) stamped on both faces with Abbathor's jeweled dagger, point-downwards.

3rd Edition
In third edition, Abbathor once again returned as part of the Forgotten Realms line, in "Faiths and Pantheons".

His entry in this book was quite unremarkable, being mostly a cut-down version of his lore from "Demihuman Deities" (as was the case for most such gods). It did specify that the yearly sacrifice involved ripping open the victim's ribcage to create "Abbathor's purse", making it easier for the gems to be soaked in the sacrifice's blood.

4th Edition
In 4th edition, because of new design directions, Abbathor fell under the radar; the developers decided that most of the racial pantheons had boiled down to just "God of X, but for Race Y". As such, Abbathor was downgraded in this edition from a full-fledged god to an Exarch and mentioned only in passing.

5th Edition
Abbathor is only of note in 5th edition for his brief appearance in "Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes". Whilst still the god of greed, he is given a more nuanced portrayal, with greed being portrayed as not just an inspiration to be a thief and a murderer, but also a motivator for change, improvement, and innovation. Thus, disreputable as he is, Abbathor's influence is described as also helping the dwarven race from succumbing to stagnation, given its naturally conservative mindset.
Monster Mythology is a splatbook for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. The 4th of the "Dungeon Master's Guide Reference" series of books, Monster Mythology was the second of two books expanding upon the Gods of D&D; in contrast to its precursor, "Legends & Lore" (also known as "Deities & Demigods"), which had covered gods of various real world polytheistic faiths as well as several fantasy series deities, Monster Mythology focused on the gods of the demihumans, the monstrous humanoids, and the various sapient monsters.

Aside from some rules on things like non-human priest mechanics, mostly, Monster Mythology was a Monster Manual style guide to the faiths of the non-human races, covering a wide array of monstrous deities in some...sometimes convoluted pantheon divisions.
