''"To punish the oppressors of humanity is clemency; to forgive them is cruelty."''

-Maximilien Robespierre

The '''Stormcast Eternals''' are the primary type of soldiers used by Sigmar in order to fight Chaos during the [[Age of Sigmar]], and thus are the posterboys of the new line.

Fans of Warhammer consider them something akin to space marines given their similarities in fluff (An elite military force of engineered super-soldiers, personally designed by a god-ruler to be his warriors to combat unfathomably terrifying Lovecraftian horrors that normal men would simply despair at.) and model design (Namely thick/all-enclosing armor with heug [[pauldrons]]; Because any god ruler knows that the size of one's pauldrons is directly proportional to how awesome they are.), often using the term "Sigmarines" to refer to them. Additionally, given their non-spaceborne nature, they can also be hilariously referred to as "Ground Marines". Two more strikes for (or against them, depending on your view) are the fact that some of them have crossbows that resemble bolters and the winged ones resemble some of the Blood Angels models.

==What are the Stormcast Eternals?==
"THEY ARE THE GROUND MARINES!!!!!!!!!" Also, lightning hammers and thunder axes - "precursors" to lightning claws and thunder hammers.

They are made from mortal warriors taken away by the God-King [[Sigmar]] and augmented with mystic energies and given fancy new weapons and armour made of Sigmarite. The universal trait to all the Eternals is that they opposed Chaos whenever it appeared, though certain chambers work on details like faith or vengeance.

Curiously enough, Eternals can be both male and female and not necessarily human, although the only named characters presented so far were originally male humans and a single male <strike>undead skeleton</strike> from the realm of Shyish - turns out he was a Prince that came from the same place as Tarsus Bullheart. Considering that the process of making a Stormcast is more mystical than any genetic modifications and that the person in question will not eventually remember who they are in the end, it is very likely that any non-Chaos mortal could become one. The only real specific that is considered is that the undead tend to become Lord-Relictors, who are able to see the spirits and thus are able to anchor his kin to Sigmar's Realm of Azyr.
That said, however, the Eternal part of their name is rather relative: Their souls are constantly coveted by [[Nagash]] because he considers anything death as his, and the supply of Sigmarite is limited, with each reforging taking more supplies and more of the Stormcast's memories, feelings and general personality is lost.

Aside from stomping Chaos, their main goal is uncovering the Realmgates: Portals to other Realms. By securing them, they gain another route back to Azyr or to any of the other realms, so a small retinue of Stormcasts has to stay behind to guard it, until the Freeguard (old Empire models, [[Imperial Guard|now a unified army]]) can secure land and begin to rebuild.

Aside from all that, Stormcasts aren't actually all that holy or magical when it comes down to it; they are about as powerful physically as a Chaos Warrior, aside from the "cannot completely die" thing. Unlike Chaos Warriors, who are fanatically devoted to Chaos, Stormcasts are still very much human, or whatever race they were before. They need to eat, to sleep and have desires as anyone else (and again, the function of their peepee or vagoo hasn't been expounded on, so perhaps they can still get it on). Whether their armor can be removed hasn't been made clear, but their faceplate can (the models themselves have a belt buckle on top).

Stormcasts see themselves as saviours first of all, trying to defend others successfully, when they had failed to do so in the past. That said, some have a tendency to get lost in revenge, seeing only the destruction of Chaos as a viable way of atoning for past transgressions. One Celestant (general) in a recent novel brooded over the fact that his entire tribe was wiped, because he didn't have the strength to beat the Chaos Sorceress who did it, thinking only manly unfeeling Batman-esque brooding would make up for it. His fellow Celestant wasn't convinced, thinking that the fear of losing, and the grieve and loss he feels should be his drive. Simplair serval Stormcast make a point to remember that most of the Chaos forces they fight only follow chaos because the Chaos Gods are all they know and attempts to redeem them should be made. So at least they have ways of thinking, which is cool.

Apparently, if a Stormcast loses a piece of equipment, it isn't regenerated with them, so many Stormcast seeks out their old nemesis to get their things back. An Orruk Warboss cheerily mentioned taking the head of a Stormcast clean off and showing it on his back banner out of respect, knowing the 'Cast would get back at him to fight again.

TL;DR Stormcast Eternals are magical [[Necron]] [[Space Marines]] with emotion. Better yet, they have more similarities to [[Rubric Marines]] (you know? the whole possessed armor automaton shenanigan?) only with less grimdark and more free will.

==Rank and Military==
When each mortal is reforged, they are immediately put into a strenuous training ritual meant to hone them into superhuman hammer-swinging engines of holy war. Once the big man is satisfied, he then groups them into Stormhosts, the equivalents of Space Marine Legions, and there they train with each other in a massive coliseum that [[Malekith|Malerion]] gifted him back when there was an alliance. These stormhosts are then broken into Chambers (Chapters) with each having several conclaves organized by specialty.

Each Host is lead by a Chamber Command, who governs each individual lesser Hosts, of which there are between 3 to 9 Retinues (squads), each with between 6 to 20 Stormcasts. For example, the Hammers of Sigmar Chamber has 301 Stormcasts of 7 Commanders, 36 Paladins, 180 Liberators, 18 Prosecutors (yep; half as many jumpies as elites) and 60 Judicators.

*'''Chamber Command:'''
**'''Lords Celestant:''' The top dogs in the chambers, these are the mightiest of heroes among the Chambers, gifted a larger portion of Sigmar's power in order to become great leaders. Some opt to fun with hammers and swords, while other find Dracoths (Large dragons that shoot lightning) to ride like horses or Stardrakes (Even massive-er dragons).
**'''Lords Relictor:''' Usually undead and wizards, these guys are able to see the spiritual realm, the souls that swirl around. Their job is to use their skeletal relics to anchor the Stormcasts to Azyr so their souls don't accidentally end up Daemon chow or part of Nagash's kindgom of skellingtons.
**'''Lords Castellant:''' These guys are support-based, their tests involving conquering their fears. If successful, they get a pet Gryph-hound and a special warding lantern that illuminates his fellow Sigmarines and incinerates Chaos.
**'''Knights Heraldor:''' These guys have giant horns that shoot lightning. Because STORMS. Their helmets are weirdly segmented around the mouths; assumed so the warrior inside can actually blow the fucking horn.
**'''Knights Vexillor:''' Unlike the other jobs, these guys are actually chosen in a contest. A shitton of Stormcasts enter the Coliseum, smack each other to not-quite death (The Coliseum makes sure everyone leaves refreshed because...Malerion didn't have a mood swing when he made it). The winner gets to hold an awesome standard, or a big plate with a glowing orb on it that can be used to throw around fuckin' comets.
**'''Knights Azyros:''' The closets thing to Scout Leaders, these guys have lanterns to help illuminate the realms so Sigmar can see all the way from his palace. Also, the lanterns burn chaos.
**'''Knights Venator:''' Shootier flying Sigmarines, these guys are master archers with magical arrows and own pet Star-Eagles. One of their Stormsurgeboltthunderblowsuperarrows can kill almost any regular leader character in one shot.

*'''Redeemer Conclave.'''
**'''Liberators:''' The ground-floor. The goons. The average Liberator is a walking tank, capable of wielding either melee weapons or shields to protect his pals from anything deadlier. They use either swords or hammers, sometimes dualwielded, and they use bigger, twohanded versions of said weapons. They also like to fuck up big monsters and villains something fierce.

*'''Justicar Conclave.'''
**'''Judicators:''' Liberators who traded in their shields and hammers for bows (plain or crossbows). Some even get lucky and get a mega-bow that fires thunderbolts. THE BOWS ARE MAGIC! YEEEEEEEEEEAH!!!!!!! The Crossbows look weirdly like Bolters, and as always, the names for these weapons are stuff like Stormbolt Surgebowarrows. They also hit Chaos-stuff better, because fuck those guys amirite

*'''[[Gabriel Angelos|Angelos]] Conclave.'''
**'''Prosecutors:''' They're like Liberators, but they got wings. They tend to spearhead the assault with their speed, throwing either magical returning hammers or magical returning spears. Or they could just smash with said weapons. Like the Liberators, they can wield big-ass weapons like two-handed axes or tridents.

*'''Paladin Conclave.'''
**'''Retributors:''' Massive piles of Sigmarite who serve in the Paladin Chambers. These guys carry massive hammers to squash things, which has Rending +1 which can completely remove everything not a leader or monster in a turn. These guys love to pummel anything with more than one Wound, since they do two Damage standard, and can turn that into Mortal Wounds. There's really not something these motherfuckers can't do. Well okay, they don't stand up to high Rend or MW shooting, but then again that's a SE problem in general.
**'''Protectors:''' Despite the name, these Paladins only wield glaives. Glaives that are actually capable of generating magical force fields, and cut down bigass monsters, should they get close. They are also very, very long ranged, so put them behind a Liberator wall and skewer that Mawkrusha something fierce while the goons gets slaughtered.
**'''Decimators:''' Paladins with fuckhueg axes, these things are made to make sweet murder out of hordes. These guys have a massive range on their axes, which is important, because they each get as many attacks as they have enemies within range, because fuck Reaver Hordes amirite. They are also very scary, so people take more heavy Battleshock casulties. Don't try to axe the knee of a Monster or Hero, though; with only one attack, the their axes are laughably weak.

*'''Extremis Chamber'''
**'''Drakesworn Templars:''' Usually a second-in-command for a Lord-Celestant, a Templar is one of those few fortunate Sigmarines to encounter a Stardrake. Their loadout is more versatile.
**'''Fulminators:''' Paladin Protectors on Dracoths.
**'''Concussors:''' Paladin Retributors on Dracoths.
**'''Desolators:'' Paladin Decimators on Dracoths, same as the rest.
**'''Tempestors:''' Paladins with crossbows riding Dracoths.

===Notable Stormhosts===
*'''Hammers of Sigmar:''' The first Stormhost. They wield [[Ultramarines|Blue and Gold and pride themselves on being the posterboys of AoS]]. They have no personality, as usual.
*'''Hallowed Knights:''' The fourth Stormhost . They wear silver and blue and are [[Grey Knights|pretty zealous about killing Chaos]]. They're known for their DETERMINATION and incredible faith in Sigmar, making them the ideal choice for jobs like wading through Nurgle's horrifying and disgusting kingdoms despite all the filth and plagues that pollute the lands. This Stormhost is in general one of the more popular Hosts, with their metal armors and very faith-based culture. Also have a cool battlecry.
*'''Celestial Vindicators:''' The Sixth Stormhost . They're vengeful motherfuckers who declared vengeance back as mortals and thus are united by their grudges. Their armor is torquise, so the blood reaaaaally stands out.
*'''Celestial Knights:''' A Stormhost that is on a constant crusade to bring the light of Sigmar to all benighted lands. Pretty much these [[Black Templars|guys]].
*'''Lions of Sigmar:''' Rocking the bronze gold and purple look there is little known about this Stormhost save for their heraldry and thunderous roar in battle, also equivalent to this[[Dark Angels| Chapter]].
*'''Knights of the Aurora:''' This Stormhost are claimed to strike more quickly and are masters of rapid assault and sporting the white armor with green and gold trimmings and has the need for [[White Scars| speed]].
*'''Knights Excelsior:''' This Stormhost run around in white armour with gold trimmings, not unlike the Knights of the Aurora but without the green. These guys are said to have built up a fierce reputation for totally massacring their enemies so brutally that even other Stormhosts think its a bit excessive. Their claim to fame is that they stepped up to bail the Hallowed Knights out when a Lord of Plagues was about to capture Alarielle, with their Knight-Azyros, a pretty fly badass called Diomar, personally charging the powerful Nurgle lord.
*'''Astral Templars:''' If you're tired of holy knights, go no further; these fuckers have taken to like it in the Realm of Ghur, and has become one with the beasts. Their design is brown, metal and black, and their armor is adorned with pelts, bloody markings and other tribal stuff. The [[Space Wolves]] the the Hammer's Utramarines, but with less wolfs and more barbarians.
*'''Tempest Lords:''' Donning the Ultramarine blue with an addition of white shields and shoulders are the Tempest Lords. They're described as the most regal and proud Stormhost, probably because every single one of these guys was a monarch, lord, or other such noble before being chosen by Sigmar. Despite this, they're actually pretty baller and down to earth guys, being perhaps the most selfless of all the Stormhosts, flat-out seeing it as their duty to protect those less fortunate than themselves (which is basically everyone,) often inspiring downtrodden mortal tribes to break their chains and fight Chaos alongside the Tempest Lords. They're also pretty literal it seems, because Sigmar once joked that the Stormcast were each worth twelve mortal men in a fight and since then the Tempest Lords have kept count of how many kills they score before dying, taking it as a massive personal disgrace if they don't reach twelve kills. That said, they do a pretty damn good job of reaching that score, leaving them as one of the hardest Stormhosts to kill simply due to their sheer pride refusing to let them die.
*'''Anvils of the Heldenhammer''' The Anvils of the Heldenhammer are a Stormhost of the Stormcast Eternals, wearing black armor. The warriors of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer are dark and brooding, as their Reforging came as the Broken World spun sinister under a magical gloom.

===Notable Fan-created Stormhosts===
*'''[[Forgesworn Eternals]]:''' A [[Dwarfs (Warhammer Fantasy)|Duardin]] Stormhost wearing silver and red.

==Notable Stormcasts==
*'''Ghal Maraz, The Celestant-Prime:''' The alpha, the first Eternal ever forged by Sigmar. It's unknown just who he might be, but it's said he was a mighty king from the past (making people immediately guess either [[Settra the Imperishable|Settra]] or [[Karl Franz]]. Turns out he's neither). Despite how much power he put into it, the process was still incomplete, so Sigmar decided to put him in a chamber to preserve the project because he spent too much as it is. However, once he recovered Ghal Maraz, he was able to finish the process and get a giant golden angel to join the ranks. GW was then struck by retardation and instead of trying to make some cool name, just named him after his hammer, in canon the guy just don't remember who he was so he just decided to use the name of his weapon.
*'''Vandus Hammerhand:''' The first named hero among the Eternals, a Lord-Celestant of the Hammers of Sigmar who rides a Dracoth. Apparently, he once fought off against a Khornate Lord known as Ghorgos Khul as a mortal and almost died before being forged, and instead became a giant gold-plated badass instead of just a human one. He's considered the hero of the Starter Set and is responsible for finding Ghal Maraz.
*'''Thostos Bladestorm:''' Footslogging Lord Celestant of the Celestial Vindicators. Impulsive jackass. Died a couple of times so now Nagash has part of his soul, he still wants to give Chaos a beating. During a recent battle with a Chaos Lord Varash, Thostos was hit with extremely powerful lighting bolt which triggered a powerful reforging and the results of it was the return of his memories, emotions and a name he once was - Prince Caeran of Wolf Keep. Apparently he is now the first Stormcast to be renewed, healed and with fresh purpose but not the last.
*'''Tarsus Bullheart:''' Footslogging Lord Celestant of the Hallowed Knights, leader of a warrior chamber named after him and protagonist of the Realmgate Wars audio-books. Broody guy who's obsessed with duty and lets his hammer do the talking for him. (SPOILERS AHEAD): Once a human from the realm of Shyish called Tarsem, he lived in a place called Helstone. During the Age of Chaos he fought alongside Mannfred Von Carstein but, Mannfred being Mannfred, Mannfred abandoned them to save his own skin and Tarsem was taken by Sigmar and reforged. Now the Stormcast Tarsus, Sigmar sends him and some of his warriors to the realm of Shyish to find Nagash and parley. Along the way they find Mannfred, now a prisoner of the Khornates. They free him in exchange for his guidance and assistance in finding Nagash. After entering the underworld and an incident with the doorman, Arkhan, Nagash appears before them. This goes as well as you'd expect. After being flung across the chamber, Tarsus attacked Nagash to distract him in a successful last-ditch attempt to free the slain Stormcast Eternals' souls from Nagash's clutches. Tarsus was then killed by a VERY pissed off Nagash, who captured his soul and planned to [[Grimdark|torture as many of Sigmar's secrets from him as he could]].
*'''Tornus the Hero:''' Once known as Torglug the Despised, servant of Nurgle and Lord of Plagues, his soul was redeemed by Sigmar at the height of the last battle at Blackstone Summit in the realm of Ghyran when killed by Ghal Maraz, The Celestant-Prime. During his brief life as a mortal, Tornus was a righteous believer in Sigmar and his faith was unmatched by those that fought with him during the Age of Chaos against the nurgle invaders. At some point he was captured and left in a pit of filth and due to his stubbornness, faith and pride lived for many weeks only to succumb to the lies that Nurgle spoke to him during those months of captivity. Even then his soul, although corrupted and twisted, held out a spark of hope that his faith in Sigmar was not a lie and was rewarded with a chance for redemption as a Knight-Venator in services of the Hallowed Knights.
''"This isn't a war," said the artilleryman. "It never was a war, any more than there's war between man and ants."'' ― H.G. Wells, The War of the Worlds

The '''Tyranids''' (often shortened to simply '''<nowiki>'</nowiki>nids''') are a race of extragalactic "Alien locust" in [[Warhammer 40k]], that seemingly exist only to devour [[Human|biomass]], evolve into a more perfect species and grow in numbers. They are extremely adaptable, and frequently engineer and modify traits and characteristics in their genome, by devouring other unfortunate species into their own, in order to improve their combat effectiveness and survival. As a result, they are constantly evolving and becoming more dangerous. The Tyranids are most commonly seen in the galaxy in the form of [[Hive Fleet]]s, large collections of space faring organisms that are capable of transporting and birthing the smaller strains of the species, as they travel from world to world, attack and consume all biomass on/in that planet, leaving it a lifeless rock. Even bacteria and archaea are consumed from the atmosphere. They are probably one of the oldest races when you think about it, and are together with Orks and Necrons, are probably going to win this galactic war in this galaxy. For this reason pretty much every faction in the galaxy sees Tyranids as the ultimate threat and [[Blood Angels|would ally even]] [[Necrons|with their sworn enemies]] to fight them. Thus call the race The Great Devourer.

==Overview==
Before they arrived to this galaxy, the Tyranids were probably lying dormant in intergalactic space because there is nothing there to consume (probably). Despite this, they had sentinel organisms, looking constantly for any sign of life in distant galaxies. We actually don't know how many galaxies they have already left bare or why they came to this galaxy. So most facts we have on them are simply not more than speculations. It could be that we have only seen a fraction of their numbers or that their current numbers is all there is. We simply don't know.

Circa 30k, and the alien device known as the Pharos sends up a huge quantum energy pulse, effectively signposting the Milky Way as an all you can eat buffet. They set off, taking roughly the next 10,000 years to do so.

The Tyranid species is mentally connected and controlled by the extremely powerful and near godlike HIVE MIND. The Hive Mind is the collective consciousness of the entire Tyranid race, a psychic embodiment of Tyranid instincts and racial imperatives: to devour and evolve. It is so powerful that it's mere presence (the Shadow in the Warp) makes even psykers and [[Chaos]] shit their metaphysical brains out in terror. The power of the Hive Mind is such that it casts a stifling influence over the Warp in the area, and therefore, warp travel becomes almost impossible. Hence it is that a world that finds itself a target of a Hive Fleet, is unable to call for help or receive reinforcements by the time it detects the Hive Fleet's presence. This super consciousness allows their forces to move with a unity of purpose and cohesion that makes them extremely dangerous. The individual intelligence of different strains of the species is variable, however, and many of the smaller species lack the psychic power to communicate over long distances, and so the swarm relies on larger organisms, the so-called "Synapse Creatures", to act as relays and communication nodes in the psychic network (If the Hive Mind is the Internet (Internid), then synapse creatures are ISPs (ISynaPse) and routers (router-warriors)?). Outside of the range of a synapse creature such as a Tyranid Warrior or a Hive Tyrant, smaller varieties such as those found within the Gaunt genus revert to animalistic behavior. However, certain strains, such as the Genestealer or the Lictor, are designed to be able to spend long periods of time beyond the reach of the Hive Mind, and are consequently considerably more intelligent and autonomous than other Tyranid organisms.

[[Image:KillEmAll.jpg|300px|thumb|left|DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA!]]

The normal Tyranid modus operandi is to locate a delicious looking planet, usually by following the psychic emanations of vanguard organisms like the Genestealers, who are sent ahead as scouts to infiltrate and form cults while obtaining genetic information about the local species (hence the name Gene-stealer), drawing the fleet towards a viable target. It is also known that Tyranids are attracted like moths to concentrated sources of psychic energy such as the [[Emperor|Astronomicon]]. The Tyranids are capable of non-[[Warp]]-based FTL travel, which they achieve by using gravity to manipulate spacetime and travel extremely quickly towards large gravity wells such as stars, and once they are relatively close, they must rely on STL travel to close the gap with their target. Once they reach the world, infinite swarms of creatures flood down to the surface to overwhelm all resistance and consume the planet's population and resources in a manner reminiscent of a Korean StarCraft champion performing the devastating "Zerg Rush" (Note that the Zerg were supposedly based on Tyranids, which in turn were based on aliens in from movies like ''Starship Troopers'' and ''Alien''. All these organisms are based on eusocial Hive insects such as the order ''Hymenoptera'', which includes ants, bees etc.) In the later stages of the invasion, the Fleet manipulates the planet's biosphere and seeds it with aggressive plant life that grows extremely rapidly and assimilate all nutrition/life left on the planet, which is then consumed by the creatures of the swarm and massive feeding tentacles/tubes, dropped by Tyranid bio-ships in low orbit, and hence conveyed to the Hive Fleet as a whole. The fleet literally grows in size and mass, and moves on to the next planet.

This makes the Tyranids a very dangerous foe to fight. Even the Imperial Guard and Orks will find it difficult to beat them in a war of attrition, as individual losses are meaningless to the bugs. As long as they are able to recover the biomass of the dead, it is simply recycled into new warriors and ships. It's worth noting that going against technological species, results in fewer and fewer recycled biomass, so a Hive assaulting a high-tech heavily fortified fortress, loses some of it's total biomass bit-by-bit, but there are only few cases where the Tyranids really bite off more than they can chew. Even a Hive Fleet that has taken terrible losses and is forced to retreat, may soon return to terrorize strong worlds, as capturing and consuming a few poorly defended backwater planets is all that is required for them to replenish their forces. Even Hive Fleets considered defeated by the Imperium, may still be dangerous, as the splinter elements that have survived, may continue to infest worlds in the region. It is worth noting that, in the rare event that two different Tyranid fleets encounter each other, they are apt to attack each other. This is generally believed to be some sort of Darwinian selection mechanism to compare the competitiveness of the traits the individual fleets have absorbed, with the victorious fleet consuming the other, absorbing their best traits, and culturing a deadly hybrid with the best of both worlds.

[[File:1389680259601.jpg|thumb|450px|right|Who doesn't love a scuttling swarm of space locusts?]]

So far, only fragments of Tyranid Hive Fleets have made it to this galaxy, and they were given monstrous names such as "Behemoth" and "Leviathan" and ate untold numbers of planets before finally destroyed or stalled. It's also known that these are merely scouting fleets for the unimaginably large swarm that has yet to arrive, still currently in transit from another galaxy ([[Imperium|Imperial]] scholars suppose them to be either en route from a galaxy they successfully scoured of all life, or retreating from some force even nastier than they are). Noted Imperial scholars believe that the only possible plan that stands any chance against the arrival of this force involves giving a [[melta]] gun to everyone that has hands and praying to the God-Emperor for the best. They have been expected to arrive on Terra's doorstep any day now for years, being stalled by a force even more malicious then they are: [[Games Workshop|GW]]'s refusal to move the story forward.

And if they do expect the above to be retcon so that Leviathan is in fact the main force, as the above was coming from a crazed inquisitor.

==On the Table==

[[Image:No Retreat.jpg|300px|thumb|left|KABLOOIE!]]

===5th Edition===
When the 5th edition Codex released, it was met with [[skub|split opinions]], as usual. Some were angry at how overpowered the army looked, citing the facts that the [[Tervigon]] could create more units out of thin air using "broken" special rules, that the anti-psyker powers were so broad, and that the [[Hive Guard]] and [[Zoanthrope]]s were so good at tank hunting at a time when tanks were kings.

However, after some time passed, people who decried the cheesy aspects of the army faded from view as people began to realize the army only seemed cheesy on paper, and that, in truth, any cheese the army had was drowned in the army's drawbacks. The Termagants the Tervigon could spawn? Stats like a [[Imperial Guard|Guardsmen]] in close combat, but with half their weapon range and weaker armor. And to get Tervigons to the Troops slot from the HQ slot (where they were practically useless), you had to pay Guardsman prices for a unit of them. In other words, you ''had'' to use the "cheesy" special rule or they were overpriced into uselessness.

Then there were the special powers that supposedly buffed the army. Again, at a first glance, they looked broken. Certain upgrades allowed any unit within 6" of certain models to gain rules like Feel No Pain, Furious Charge, Poison, cover saves, and so on. It sounded like a serious boon, but it had a funny effect. Aside from the fact that most Tyranid models are too expensive unless you capitalize on the bubble-buffs, it also does a horrible thing to your freedom to play the army. Mainly, it forces players to keep all their units bunched up within 6" of a few key models, requiring them to spend the entire game in a rigid formation that can spell disaster for the army when broken. Tyranids already suffered from this problem somewhat due to their synapse rules, but the 6" range on the mandatory buffs only shortened the leash. Not to mention it also made blasts even worse for an army already vulnerable to them.

Tyranids do seriously lack effective long range support as well. While they possess some weapons capable of mincing infantry units, most things with a range over 12" come at a premium. With an army so focused on close combat this shouldn't be such a problem, but synapse and buff leashes actually make it a valid concern. Mainly, the short buff leash pressures a player into a castle formation, but the lack of medium and long ranged weaponry pressures the player to advance the entire castle towards the enemy, which has a way of creating chinks in the formation. And you can't just move a few key units - when a unit moves forward, the model providing the buffs has to follow them, and then the other units relying on the buffs have to follow the model providing the buffs; it just makes the army obscenely inflexible.

Tyranid monstrous creatures, their heavy support, also got drastically [[Nerf|nerfed]] in the 5th edition update. 6th edition rules have mitigated it somewhat, but the supposedly heavy-hitters of the army have limited roles or schizophrenic weapons options. Like the Tyrannofex, for example: with a 2+ save and six wounds at a toughness of six, the damn thing is almost indestructible, but the weapons are short-ranged, and if you buy it an expensive long-range cannon to shoot at tanks, you can't change any of its other short-ranged weapons which are designed to kill infantry. You just can't quite kit your heavy support to do the things you specifically want.

Which brings us to the final problem: on top of mountains of tactical inflexibility, the Tyranids also suffer from the drawback of design inflexibility. Unlike Guardsmen or Space Marines, the Tyranids don't get a lot of options to change the way the army works. When you buy hormagaunts, you get them at face value - you can't equip them with frag grenades, give them pistols, add heavy weapons, or mess with their gear in any way. You can buy them the poison special rule if you want, or maybe the Furious Charge special rule, but those are your two choices. Almost the entire army is that way, which is vastly different than the way they worked in 4th edition. The Carnifex alone lost eighteen weapon and biomorph options between 4th and 5th edition and it doubled in points value. And with no upgrades taken! And for twenty points more, you can get a trygon. Which is better then the carnifex in almost every way. Cept looking good. It's possible that Tyranids are now the least adaptable army in the game.

The last kick in the teeth is that Tyranids are one of the more expensive armies to collect, requiring a larger number of models than most. Their HQ choices, short of the Tyranid Prime, are big monsters which run at prices edging nearer and nearer to $100 each. For the fact that most Tyranid armies will play exactly the same way, having all the same exploitable weaknesses and no unique wargear surprises, it's not a wonder that the army has seen a huge drop in sales since the release of their 5th edition codex. The shorter lesson to take from all this is, if you're thinking about beginning a 40k army, even with how expensive it's all gotten, Tyranids are not the best army to start with.
===6th Edition===
[[Image:GWstockfail2.jpg|300px|thumb|right|WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! THE FAIL TRAIN HAS NO BRAKES!]]
[[Image:Haruspex.jpg|300px|thumb|right|Is it me, or does the [[Haruspex]] look like it belongs in a [[/d/|bad hentai movie?]] ]]
Now that it's out, it sadly more of the same so far and may in fact have nerfed them FURTHER. Though a few new units did get added, most of which weren't even mentioned since Chapter Approved 2001 (such as the Exocrine and the Haruspex), along with a new FMC called the Crone, also on the plus side, rumour has it that carnifexes are going to be a fair bit cheaper, and can take almost any biomorph, and Flesh Hooks are back but only three units can have them.

...[http://imgur.com/a/8w57g And virtually everything the Tyranids needed to stay competitive was either removed or nerfed to uselessness]. On the downside, Tyranids no longer have Mycetic Spores, the Doom of Malan'tai, Ymgarl Genestealers or the Parasite of Mortrex (GW lost a pissing contest with Chapterhouse Studios, with the rather iffy ruling that GeeDubs didn't have the IP right to the models ChapterHouse was producing, and now they're taking it out on us because "fuck balance and competition" apparently). They even lost the ability to use psychic powers from the Biomancy table along with their Hive Mind powers being nerfed. Why GW thought that the most underpowered army needed even MORE nerfing will remain a mystery (But odds are that Cruddace had something to do with it). A perfect example of unnecessary nerfing is the tyranid prime; it was rarely fielded in 5th edition, and the 6th edition codex inexplicably increased its cost by over 56%. At any rate, it looks like the Tyranids will soon be joining the Sisters in GW Hell, rather ironic as they were once under the axe along with Squats. Keep in mind that GW stocks were already dropping due to the financial disasters that were 6th ed Apocalypse, Strong Hold Assault, and Escalation, but we're not kidding when we say, that, THE NEW CODEX WAS SO BAD THAT EVEN THEIR STOCKS PLUMMETED BY 23%! Looks like there were more Tyranid players than everyone thought, not everyone plays Space Marines (although to tell the truth, CNN Money reports show that actually the entire market was hit by a worldwide crash, Tyranid nerfs may just have aggravated the situation). Meanwhile in [[Warhammer Fantasy]] there's 3 armies which are at least one edition behind in updates (with Dwarfs updated in Febuary 2014). Along with the announcement was plans to close many GW stores, including their headquarters in Germany... yeah, this might be the beginning of the end.

[[Indrick Boreale|BUT NO! WE SHALL NOT FAIL, IT IS THE ENEMY WHO WILL GET TASTED AND EATEN!]] Ahem, GeeDubs has released some Dataslate formations which allow you to <strike>buff your Tyranid armies to make them quite competitive,</strike> ignore the force organisation chart to spam flying monstrous creatures and overwhelm an opponents anti air defenses because the flyer rules are an even larger catastrafuck than the tyranid codex. Expect discussions and rage about allowing these dataslates for tournaments.(of course any of these arguments and complaints are founded on stupidity. This is a game not designed for hardcore competition. If you want that then play warmashit)<span style="color:purple">'''**SSSS rippaaaahhhssss will be put in crudfacessss bedssss for what he hasssss done to ussssss**'''</span>

===7th Edition and White Dwarf updates===

Geedubs seems to have finally noticed how badly nerfed tyranids have been during the last editions so they took opportunity to get your money by releasing new waves of tyranid units supported by White Dwarf updates, expect huge amounts of Skub and tactics for your space dinobugs.

Things started poorly with a pair of monstrous creatures who really didn't bring anything new to the table. The [[Toxicrene]] was fine on paper, bringing Poisoned 2+ Instant-Death-on-a-6 attacks, but as yet another flootslogging MC it had trouble catching the things it WANTED to kill. The [[Maleceptor]] was just overcosted, overcomplicated, and underpowered hunk of plastic that would be lucky to kill more than 20 points worth of models in a given turn. What was the final nail for both, however, was their armor save; the difference between a 3+ armor save and a 4+ armor save (which the two MCs had) meant that they were now vulnerable to a LOT more weapons than other Tyranid MCs (who at least warranted ordinance-grade weapons to deal with their toughness + armor).

But then things got interesting. The [[Mycetic Spore]]s came back, under the name of "Tyrannocytes", and they were well worth the wait! Alongside the new spores were a Tyranid "fortification" (that is, a Heavy Support that didn't take up a force org. slot) that could boost synapse range and drop spore mines around, and a new super-sized Muceloid Spore Mine that could assault fliers. Soon afterward came the Doom of Malan'tai in a new body: the [[Neurothrope]]! While slightly nerfed -- his signature "fuck you" bubble is now a psychic power rather than just free damage -- it's far from unusable and can even be put in a squadron to make Look Out Sir rolls!

==7th Edition, DLC and==
[[Image:maketyranidsgreat.jpg|200px|thumb|right|MAKE TYRANIDS GREAT AGAIN]]
The most unexpected announcements came from GW around Fall 2014, coinciding with the coming of [[The End Times]]: New models for the Tyranids.The first pack that was announced was a Dual Kit for the [[Maleceptor]]\[[Toxicrene]]. While the Maleceptor proved to be unpopular within ''minutes'' of having its rules announced in White Dwarf as it was an overpriced drain of warp charges, the Tocxicrene proved to fare a bit better, as the copious amount of poison and Instant Death on a 6 to-wound using said poison made it a menace against Monstrous Creatures (though its intended targets, the [[Riptide]] and [[Wraithknight]], merely scoffed at it because they're jumping monstrous creatures, and thus able to kite it like a toy).The second release proved to be the most popular by far: The return of Mycetic Spores (now [[Tyrannocyte]]s), the living fortifications known as [[Sporocyst]]s, and new [[Mucolid Spore]]s that not only assault flyers, but are also the cheapest troop choices, making starting an army of Tyranids a much simpler task. While the Tyrannocyte proved an incredible weapon that made several units (including the infamous [[Pyrovore]]) suck slightly less, that power came with a hefty price tag (for a Transport, not as a Monstrous Creature), and Sporocysts are completely immobile and are equally pricey in exchange for synapse bonuses and the ability to spam spore mines. Needless to say, people actually thanked GeeDubs for this rare show of intelligence.The third release gave new Sprues for the [[Zoanthrope]]/[[Venomthrope]] as a multi-part kit with a new set of rules for the Zoanthropes: The [[Neurothrope]], a sergeant that gave the brood a new power that could potentially give them more Warp Charges to spend on Warp Lance. Not bad, but the new sprue was still welcome.After these releases, it became clear as to why the Nids got new shit: promotions for a new Campaign called ''Shield of Baal'', which involves Nids chomping through a system near the territory of the [[Blood Angels]], meaning that [[Dante]] has to call all the successor chapters to stop the mob. He had to take help from [[Anrakyr]] to save even part of the system.This now concludes the awesome part of all things Tyranid. If you look at the gallery below the Cutenids, you will require a mind scrubbing and be lobotomized into a servitor. No exceptions.Of course you now have players mocking Nids as being a DLC faction.
The twin brother of [[Alpharius]]; collectively, they are the [[Primarchs]] of the [[Alpha Legion]]. People know less about this guy than they do about Alpharius, [[Bear Lore|so that's pretty much less than jack squat.]] In fact, people know so little about this guy and his brother that it isn't even known [[What|if they are one person or two.]] This is leveraged by the fact that everyone is either one of these guys or the other, [[Just as planned|including themselves.]]

If you don't know anybody who is secretly Alpharius or Omegon, you probably are him (or the other one (or both (or neither (or all at the same time)))).

==Conspiracies within Conspiracies (as usual)==
Alpharius/Omegon despite being twin primarchs have been shown to be at odds with each other, both helping and hindering the Horus Heresy to varying degrees. Therefore it is possible that one is a loyalist while the other is a traitor. Consider the following evidence:

===Undermining Horus and the Traitor cause===
The Alpha Legion's first victory in the [[Horus Heresy]] was claiming the Forge World of Paramar, which was left in such a state that Horus had to garrison the world with substantial forces earmarked for warzones elsewhere just to maintain control over it. When [[Horus]] called Alpharius out on this bullshit, the encrypted response was '''"The Devil is not Mocked"''' which is an oblique reference to a proverb (the full saying of which goes "When evil faces evil, the Devil is not mocked"); the moral being just because they're both evil doesn't mean they're on the same side, and that a major evil badass won't automatically consider a smaller, also evil upstart his equal.

When the White Scars eventually left the Chondax system, an Alpha Legion "fleet" ''(actually made up of several "fake" battlecruisers with no real teeth)'' arrived to hold them in position long enough to receive orders from [[Rogal Dorn]] to return to Terra. Mortarion has no idea what that was meant to achieve (the mission was apparently to give them misinformation about Prospero and con them into helping a different, non-toothless Alpha fleet to wipe out the Space Wolves) and comments that Alpharius will end up "throttling" himself with all his schemes. Given that the other fleet did its best to wipe out the Wolves, it suggests two Primarchs working two different goals.

Someone in the Alpha Legion saved Corax and the survivors of Istvaan from the World Eaters. If Corax died, the Raven Guard would have been finished and out of the war for good ''(much like the Salamanders were)'' instead they went on to rebuild and rejoin the war towards the end and still have enough marines left over to split into successor chapters.
*Also the Raven Guard being saved allowed Alpha Legion Infiltrators to steal Primarch Gene Tech which they were forewarned of by the Cabal.

===Alpharius vs Omegon===
[[Image: 1478040498934.jpg|400px|thumb|left|[[Metal Gear|Now do you remember? Who you are? What you were meant to do? I've remained a phantom, thanks to you. And thanks to you I’ve left my mark. You have too – you’ve written your own history. You’re your own man. I’m Alpharius Omegon, and you are too… No… He’s the two of us. Together. Where we are today? We built it. This story – this “Primarch” – it’s ours. We can change the Galaxy– and with it, the future. I am you, and you are me. Carry that with you, wherever you go. Thank you… my brother. From here on out, you’re Alpharius. - The Man Who Sold the Galaxy]]]]
Alpharius/Omegon sided with [[Horus]] despite being explicitly told by [[The Cabal]] prior to the Heresy that if Horus won it would mean the end of the human race but the ultimate victory against Chaos. While if the Emperor won it would mean the decay and eventual death of the galaxy, but humanity survives. A Catch 22 with '''two''' undesirable outcomes, but hey, the Alpha Legion has two Primarchs, go figure?
*By the time of ''Vulkan Lives'', the Cabal have apparently written off their "Alpharius Gambit" as a failure, despite from all appearances that the Alpha Legion joined Horus just like they wanted.

Omegon discretely plotted against Alpharius to destroy an Alpha Legion facility which was causing warp storms and preventing the [[White Scars]] from returning to Terra. If this facility was not destroyed the White Scars would not have been present during the final battle.
*Evidence of one brother conspiring against the other? Just like the rest of the Horus Heresy. Just because they are twins it doesn't mean they are always of the same mindset.

In '''Seventh Serpent''' by Graham McNeill, a sizable fleet of Alpha Legion Loyalists was preparing to join the war effort, until Traitor-Alpharius manipulates the Shattered Legion Loyalists into destroying them, under the ironic pretext of assassinating "Alpharius".
*Alpharius refers to himself here as ''"the one and only"'', which at a stretch might be a subtle hint that he has done away with his twin. As the existence of his twin is a monumental secret that there would be no need to draw attention to the fact there is only one of him, short of ego that is.
*The Loyalist Alpha Legionnaires queried ''"which one of them is it?"'' upon realising that other Alpha Legionnaires were in orbit. Then later determined ''"You're one of <u>his</u>"'' as if the distinction between the two Primarchs mattered at this point.

===Formation of Malcador's Grey Knights===
Despite the Alpha Legion stealing the ORIGINAL genetic template of the Primarchs, they handed false information to Horus which would never have resulted in anything useful.

The said stolen genetic information was never utilized by the traitor Alpha Legion either, even after 10,000 years, even when they could have been producing "[[Mary Sue|super]]" space marines!
But hey? aren't [[Grey Knights]] an "original" space marine chapter with NO known Primarch? with psychic powers? AND an unusual resistance to corruption? And [[Matt Ward|supposedly]] improved genetic template?
*Also 7th edition Grey Knights Codex hints that it has traits that none of the Legions Gene-Seed has ''(such as making the purer/more resilient to Warp Corruption (read Castellan Crowe's entry)'' which would mean that they are an entirely new strain of Gene-Seed and someone would have needed the knowledge/data to be able to create it.

===Is Omegon Janus?===
Omegon kept a hidden suit of armour on board his battle barge in addition to his "normal" legionary armour, one which he had planned a hidden purpose for to "strike unexpectedly like a serpent". This other suit was plain and unadorned... ''(unpainted power armour is grey, also it's what Malcador's Knight-Errant wore.)''

The first Grand Master of the Grey Knights was named "Janus". ''(the Roman god with two faces of "''beginnings & endings"'' i.e.: '''Alpha & Omega)''

Furthermore, in Mortarion's Heart Mortarion claimed that he knew "Janus" this could imply that Janus was either a Death Guard (perhaps Garro) or one of his brother Primarchs.
Though as the series is progressing it is becoming [[Knights-Errant#Grey Knight Grand Masters|increasingly evident]] that Garro will not be one of the First Grand Masters, so that's leaving us with fewer contemporaries of Mortarion that we know of.

Additionally, during the the Primarchs anthology book we get another hint that this might actually be the case. During the Iron Hands portion of the book while Ferrus Manus is tripping on Eldar psychic-fuckery he walks through a hallway filled with statues. While the book doesn't describe every statue in detail it becomes pretty clear quickly that each statue represents a Primarch. Ferrus Manus confirms this himself when he realizes one of the statues is supposed to be Fulgrim. Why does this shit matter? Because one of the statues that is gone into with some depth is the one that Ferrus recognized as being the Roman god Janus. Oh boy. The book makes it clear that this statue is supposed to represent Alpharius and Omegon (I mean, what other Primarch could you describe as having "twin-faces"?). So in short, in a hallway of statues that represent the Primarchs the one that seems to represent Alpharius Omegon, is straight up called Janus. Holy shit.

Let's just pray to the Emperor that this is not all just coincidence.

==Which Alpha Legionaire Are You?==
[[Black Library]] has an [http://www.blacklibrary.com/Home/alpha-legion-quiz.html Alpha Legion quiz] on their site. About half the answers seem to lead to Alpharius, and the other half lead to Omegon (fitting for the two Primarchs). If you get "I am Alpharius" for your result, there's a description of him that basically encompasses all answers (but does tellingly say "You are absolutely loyal to your legion") whereas Omegon's description says he answers to no one in pursuit of his mysterious goals and will kill anyone in the way... Actually, we kind of already knew that, but at least this confirms it.

| '''Omegon:''' || 7 || 7 || 6 || 6 || 6 || 6 || 5 || 10 || 2+/4++ or is it??
|}<br style="clear: left; height: 0px;" /><br>
While not a monster of close combat like other primarchs, Omegon gives candy to his army while fucking whith the opponent's like no one but him can (That being said, even the worst of combat primarchs will whomp just about anything else). Sire of the Alpha Legion grants all Alpha Legion units Preferred Enemy ([[Rape|Everything]]) and gives Omegon Preferred Enemy (Everything), Counter attack, Move through Cover, Scout, and Crusader- but not right away. You see, after both sides deploy he can opt out of deploying normally or via deep striking and choose to hide in any Alpha Legion Infantry unit which is part of the Primary Detachment, disguised as a rank-and-file model, but can reveal himself starting at turn 2 (and does so automatically at turn 5) replacing a model and gaining all of the above buffs. If the unit he's hiding in is "falling back" when he reveals himself, it auto-rallies, and if it's destroyed while he's still hiding (or if it is in a Transport and there is no space for him), he just goes into reserves (you must write which unit is hiding Omegon you're a true Alpha legionnaire you'd have 6 different notes, ''none of them with your actual handwriting style''). Be careful though: remember that he is Bulky and that he can only be revealed at the beginning of your own turn, so if he is hiding in a transport at full capacity he could be impossible to place (for example in a ten man Breacher squad inside a Rhino) unless you already disembarked the Squad on the previous turn, so plan accordingly. He can also Seize the Initiative on a 4+, give units arriving via Outflank a +D3 movement bonus and, best of all, [[Troll|if an enemy unit is successfully brought in from reserves and your army has an identical version of that same type also in reserve, roll a D6: on a 4+, the opponent brings in your unit instead]]. ''Combine him with his Legion RoW to almost guarantee going first and almost completely negate your enemy's reserves''. On defense,'''The Pythian Scales''' gives him 2+ armour save and 4+ invulnerable save and also ignores the effects of Poison and Fleshbane. Not bad. His weapon, '''The Pale Spear''' doesn't boost his Strength, but it does have AP1, Armourbane, and Instant Death along with Two-Handed. He also has the following equipment: '''Venom Spheres''', '''Master-Crafted Plasma Blaster''', '''Cognis Signum''', '''Nuncio Vox''' and '''Camelioline''', making him quite the force multiplier and perfectly capable to adapt to a variety of circumstances, like he should be.
