What's that? A large, furry, aggressive animal has just interrupted your party? BEAR LORE TIME!

The Bear Lore meme started right when the 4th edition core books were leaked online. After paging through them, someone found a chart for "bear lore" which had dc checks to find out amazingly stupid things about bears. Someone posted this on /tg/ and there were many lulz to be had as people continued to talk about what else there is to learn about bears, among other things. The meme originated here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/1839136/

Nature Check
For the same DC regarding manticores, you get to know it has 3 rows of teeth and that it can speak common and that it can be tricked easily.

Religion Check
Alternatively, a Religion check on bears provides the following:
*DC15: Bears do not attend any continuous services of worship. They are ready to kill at all hours of the week.

*DC25: Bear society has no visibly ordained clerics.

Religion Check
Alternatively, a Religion check on bears provides the following:
He is the one who is ultimately responsible for whatever shit his associates or minions do, and defeating him usually means the successful conclusion of a campaign (or at least a part of it). To ensure that this is sufficiently dramatic, DMs often make the BBEG a powerful character, making this final encounter something of a boss fight. The BBEGs seem to know this is coming, so they will usually construct a suitably impressive lair for the suitably dramatic confrontation to take place in.

Many of these fantasy villains often like to address themselves as 'The Dark Lord' or add 'Dark Lord' before their name, just in case you goblin-fondling peasants weren't paying attention to who they are.

Hilariously though, the sheer incompetence of some of these big bads is at times a beauty to behold, as their over-arrogant natures, the stupidity of their minions, or luck and/or skill on the part of their opposition means their plans fall apart dramatically. For example Harry Potter, despite being a teen and knowing as much magic as a mouse for most of the series, time and time again foiled Voldemort's plans. Despite having control of one of the key factions in 40k, Abaddon has failed to get anything done in 10,000 years (the fact that Abbadon hasn't been killed or overthrown yet is Games Workshop won't let the story go in that direction). And yet how do they get by with so much failure when they would have roasted their henchmen alive if they had done the same? Simple; if you dare to mention it to their face about their joy-to-watch failures, YOU will be the one roasting alive!

In most video games the BBEG is usually the final villain which you and maybe a couple of hanger-ons have to defeat to win the game. Whether it will be a hard fight or not depends how merciless the game designers are feeling.

Paladins are automatically required to attempt to offer the BBEG mercy, even if they have happily slaughtered hundreds of relatively less evil minions without mercy on their way to the BBEG's lair.

Requirements to become a BBEG
1. Kill a lot of innocents (unimaginative, but kind of a must-do on the list; a tradition).

2. Make big grandiose plans that also include big holes in them, just enough for someone to mess up if needs be.

3. Surround yourself with minions and right-hand men. Your evil meter goes higher the more bodies you can pile up there.

4. Have a characteristic to define you from the masses, like a menacing eye (Sauron), the ability to shoot lightning from your hands (Sidious) or an embarrassing track record of failure no-one can mistake (Abaddon).

5. Perfect evil laugh and twisted sense of humour.

6. Have a super bad-ass evil lair.

7. Don't melt into goodness at the sight of baskets of kittens or puppies.

8. Pretend you don't have any possible mental problems even if they are there.

9. Beat up anyone that even looks like competition.

10. Be a dick to everyone, even your own side (tough love).

11. IMPORTANT: Do something memorable. It is not enough to just do all of the above, you need to really do something unique to stand out from your peers. Sidious masterminded the complete destruction of the Jedi and the rise of the Sith to masters of the Galaxy. Sauron helped fuck up his world and make a lasting legacy of evil by creating so many evil races. Asdrubael Vect established the single most unpleasant city realm in the galaxy and allowed the Dark Eldar to flourish as a people. What will YOU do to get your enemies quaking in jealously and respect?

The Big Bad Evil Guy Hall of Infamy
An honour bestowed only to the most truly deserving head honchos of villainkind, not just any hireling with ideas above their station can get here!

* Sauron (Lord of the Rings): The dude who originally created the term 'Dark Lord' in modern high fantasy and was willing to get stuck into the action himself too. Pretty much an undead fallen angel who wants to bring order by tyrannically ruling Middle-Earth. Once the good angels ended up destroying a continent to stop him, but that didn't work and Eru (God in Middle-Earth) told them to limit their involvement to minimize collateral damage. This time, all they did was thwart his current plan of the moment and successfully kill him off. His one weakness, the destruction of his ring, still required an incredible amount of good luck and perseverance to pull off, as one of his arguably most sinister powers was using the ring to control whoever possessed it; this fact alone was what kept him alive long after his body was destroyed, as nobody was willing to finish the job by destroying the ring until a crazed halfling stole it and fell into a volcano.
* Darth Sidious (Star Wars): Creepy old freak who single-mindedly engineered the complete destruction of the Jedi Order and turned the galaxy on its head so he could rule it as a tyrant (and maintain the massive military industrial complex necessary to combat the Yuuzahn Vong upon their inevitable arrival into galaxy... much like another famous Emperor. Unfortunately not everything transpired according to his design). His favourite trick was using his force lightning to make toast (always too overdone).
* The Timeless One (Halo): AKA The Flood and The Gravemind, came from a race of nigh-omniscient Eldritch Abominations called the Precursors that came before the Universe was born. Single-handedly destroyed an interstellar Culture-level Civilisation, the Forerunners, for insane sobbing cynical vengeant shits and giggles after it led a genocide against the Precursors, their peaceful creators now gone insane with the God equivalent of ptsd, all because the Precursors thought humans were less stuck up than Forerunners and is now coming back in the form of a horrifying fusion of The Thing, Tyranids, and X-Parasite; so that he can force every single living thing in the Universe to "join" him in a very fucked up version of Communism, via OM NOM NOMING their bodies and souls in eternal torment and pain. This Flood also acts as a computer virus in later stages, and The Gravemind's ultimate plan is to wipe the universe clean and start over, having gone way past over-the top friendly fire several hundred thousand years late vengeance, when everyone responsible is already dead. Also proclaimed as the greatest Troll to come out of Sci-Fi since the introduction of Tzeentch and Eldrad, considering how he manage to slowly and painfully rip apart the 10 million year old culture and beliefs of the Forerunners by forcing them to do things that are both hypocritical and outright contradictory of their pacifistic religion as well as tormenting and mindraping the Forerunner's greatest heroes into deranged psychopaths. The most perfectionist of the lot and getting the most shit done.
* Dracula (Castlevania): Was the big bad in the majority of the Castlevania games (Subverted for the two recent games), how bad is he? Well....when even Death considers him as "Boss", then it should tell you the power differences here in pure EVIL.
* Voldemort (Harry Potter): The big bad evil wizard of the HP setting Voldemort spent most of the series as an evil spirit before coming back in a body made from a mixture in a cauldron (as you do). He runs on a platform of genocide against muggles and anyone with muggle blood, so basically he's Wizard Hitler. Countless times he failed to kill the boy who lived and twice he failed to take over the wizarding world, making one wonder about his track record.
* Jadis, the White Witch (The chronicles of Narnia): The white bitch likes to freeze everything and turn you to stone at the drop of a hat if you displease her. She's so evil, in fact, that she managed to keep Santa Claus out for 1000 years so that nobody could celebrate Christmas (We remind you, this is a children's story, so this is a big fucking deal). She froze Narnia to be her perfect place but was challenged by a gang of motley kids and killed by the lion Aslan (revealed to be literally Jesus Himself taking the form of a large lion; so she was pretty badass if it took God Himself to take her out). Since then her ghost has been hiding on Earth under the guise of Sarah Palin (you thought the love of cold weather and evil politics was just coincidence did you??)
* <s>Discord (My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic): Despite the hate for a certain show about colored horses most people, even neckbeards, take off their hat to one of the villains, the embodiment of chaos, Discord. Think Q from Star Trek (he is even voiced by the same actor) except while Q was kept in check by some higher ups and only really wanted to have fun, Discord was a schemer who planned to turn the world into his chaotic playground warping the landscape and minds of it citizens. Think Alice in wonderland on crack. Was turned good in a semi-cheesy way but even then he spends most of his time fucking with people.</s> HERESY! *BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM*
*Dio Brando: This is one of those rare cases where we get to see most of the Villain's rise to power, from a normal but sociopathic aristocratic brat to a hundred-year-old vampire able to stop time itself. Like most things in JJBA, Dio is famous for his bombastic personality and his ability to kick ass in a fight. And his minions, all quite powerful in their own unique ways, simply serve as appetizers for the sheer mindfuckery he's capable of whenever he activates his Stand, <s>The World</s> ZA WARUDO! Even after he's killed, enough of his minions survived to stir up trouble, including plots to try and reset the universe to revive him.
* Yawgmoth, the Ineffable (Magic: The Gathering): This is the formerly ordinary human that turned Phyrexia from a backwater plane to the nightmarish world that we all knew and loved via turning his entire homeland (which he was ejected from for being evil before he was evil, which is how evil he became) into nightmare zombie robots from hell (badass). After his apotheosis, the Father of Machines was able to take on Oldwalkers and have a good chance of coming out on top. As such, he was too powerful to print, and some of the most powerful cards bear his name (Yawgmoth's Will and Yawgmoth's Bargain are both banned in legacy). Even 20 years after he was murdered he remains the single strongest entity in Magic history.

Games Workshops
*Nagash Former Tomb King (via usurping the throne) from back when they were living humans, the inventor of necromancy, the one who caused undead factions to exist in the game and the greatest threat to the Warhammer world outside of the Chaos Gods, he even plans to supplant them. And he would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those meddling rats and Nurgle.
*Malekith (Warhammer Fantasy): The Witch King and Lord of the Druchii, Malekith is (or was) one of the less pompous of the Big Bads of Fantasy - On his throne in the center of his evil and cold domain of Naggaroth, Malekith could see the entirety of the world, no matter where it was, but his eyes were fixed at one point - Ulthuan and the throne of the Phoenix King, which he will always strive towards. After 6000 years of civil war, started after his mother Morathi fucked up his coronation, the End Times reveals something incredible and unheard of among Bad Guys - He was the good guy! Or, the gods had chosen him like he said they had and they decided to let him retake their test. Which he passed. After retaking Ulthuan and killing Tyrion, who was possesed by the Widowmaker, Malekith was chosen as the Phoenix/Eternity King. Now the leader of all elfkind, he is the only one who can assure the survival of the entirety of the elven race...
* Archaon (Warhammer Fantasy): Elected bro for life of the Chaos Gods and doer of getting shit done and given the current state of AoS arguably the most successful BBEG ever. Formerly a pious man until the machinations of Chaos made him go off the rails. Failbaddon lives in constant terror of Archaon getting fed up and coming to kick him out of existence.
* Asdrubael Vect (Warhammer 40k): More dangerous than Failbaddon could ever be even in his dreams, Vect passes the time causing countless millions to be tortured, just for his bored amusement. Master of dick moves and getting others to get others to do his dirty work. The only reason he hasn't conquered the galaxy is <s>Games Workshop's refusal to let the plot of 40K go in that direction</s> because endlessly dicking with the galaxy is infinitely more fun and sustainable than conquering it. It's implied that the reason Vect was removed from the codex as a playable character is because GW was that scared of Vect changing the status quo. Last seen letting the oldcron Nightbringer out of his box so he could talk about killing stuff with someone who could match his tally.
* Matt Ward (Games Workshop): Dark Lord of Fluff Rape and Codex destruction, his plan to unleash his hordes of ultramarine servants to take over the galaxy in a wave of blue and to subject the grey knights to eternal ass rape. He's also managed to defeat the C'tan and take control of the Necrons to aid his blue-clad minions. Few, if any are as diabolic as this man! In fact, he was so much of an evil mastermind that none of his plans were ever really challenged, and so he quit his goddamn job. As in, literally. The Throne of Defilement of Fluff and Crunch is now vacant.

The Big Bad Evil Guy, typically shortened simply to Big Bad or BBEG, is roleplaying gamer slang for the primary antagonist of an adventure or campaign.
The only reason he hasn't conquered the galaxy is <s>Games Workshop's refusal to let the plot of 40K go in that direction</s> because endlessly dicking with the galaxy is infinitely more fun than conquering it.

2605:E000:7ECF:7F00:A876:AE1C:6196:2FC4: /* Requirements to become a BBEG */

The Big Bad Evil Guy, typically shortened simply to Big Bad or BBEG, is roleplaying gamer slang for the primary antagonist of an adventure or campaign.

She's so evil, in fact, that she managed to keep Santa Claus out for 1000 years so that nobody could celebrate Christmas (We remind you, this is a children's story, so this is a big deal).
* Yawgmoth the Ineffable (Magic: The Gathering): This is the formerly ordinary human that turned Phyrexia from a backwater plane to the nightmarish world that we all knew and loved via turning his entire homeland (which he was ejected from for being evil before he was evil, which is how evil he became) into nightmare zombie robots from hell (badass).

The only reason he hasn't conquered the galaxy is <s>Games Workshop's refusal to let the plot of 40K go in that direction</s> because endlessly dicking with the galaxy is infinitely more fun than conquering it.
Sauron is the Big Bad Evil Guy of the Lord of the Rings franchise and the reason behind much of the changes and upheaval that the LoR world has faced during it's current ages. He is one of the first proper Dark Lords in popular fiction; while Voldemort, Doctor Doom and Abaddon were in kindergarten like some evil version of the muppet babies learning what the word 'bad' meant, Sauron was out cracking heads and getting shit done.

He wasn't the original big bad for LoR, oh no
A hilarious note is the fact he wasn't even the original big bad to begin with; Morgoth the first D̶a̶r̶k̶ ̶L̶o̶r̶d̶ Giver of Freedom seduced Sauron into his new lifestyle by offering him unlimited chocolate cake forever and Sauron agreed, quickly becoming his chief underling. Once his boss was beaten up by the other Ainur (Tolkien's versions of archangels in this universe), Sauron fled across the sea to middle-earth, where he used his great cunning and sorcery to work events to his favour. He corrupted the Numenorians (the LotR equivalent of Atlantis) and caused so much harm the other Maia used their full power to defeat Sauron and sunk Numenor; an action which made their ruler Eru (the LotR equivalent of the Judeo-Christian God) forbid them from using their full power so as to reduce collateral damage.

Damn those pesky kids!
Like any true evil villain, Sauron was then beaten time and time again but he always managed to flee while screaming "I'll be back" over his shoulder. Finally having had enough of subtlety, he tried to merely beat everyone to death in his big destroyer form with an army of orcs but thanks to some pesky men and elves, he got his finger with his magic ring (which contained a great deal of his power and life) cut off and as a result became a highly pissed off spirit that kept trying to come back, knowing that if he could get his bling back again he could have another bash at taking over the world.

Rise and fall again, this time for good
Sauron managed to crawl (do spirits crawl?) his way back from the abyss through sheer stubbornness and over time rebuilt his strength. When he felt secure enough he returned to his dark kingdom Mordor and began preparing for his final war against the kingdoms of men and elf, breeding an army of SUPER orks to do his bidding. But you remember that bling we mentioned earlier? Some dang pesky hobbit kid only went and dropped it in Mount Doom! The one volcano that could destroy it! You know what we are saying?!
Were you looking for the RPG by White Wolf Games?

Or perhaps the us versus them party game?

-----

Werewolves are people that change their shape into something lupine. It used to be turning into a for-real wolf, but modern people don't find wolves so scary anymore, so we've come up with transforming into half-man half-wolf monstrosities, or turning into fucking HUGE wolves.

Sometimes werewolves are the way they are because of a curse, or a transmitted disease, or just because they're fucking evil. Or they're aliens. or furfaggots that made a wish. Werewolves of the cursed variety will transform against their will and have no control while in their monstrous shape, and get all emo and shit when they turn back into a person, which usually makes sense if they have family or loved ones that they don't want getting killed, or even worse, cursed too. Many stories say that the cursed types will transform during the three days of a full moon; some make them transform when they experience intense emotions such as lust or anger (q.v.
There are other monsters that are people-turning-into-animals, but werewolves (or Selkies but were splitting hairs there) were here first. The others are called were-(animal), such as were-rats, were-bears, were-bats (not to be confused with vampires), and even were-birds, were-dolphins, were-whales and were-snails. An inversion is an animal that turns into a person, jokingly called were-humans, but that's pretty lame because of course one of their shapes is a human but we need to know what the animal is.

Also, never piss off a Werewolf. Despite the furry jokes we make they can typically kick your ass six ways from sundown. Like the "Hulk Smash" joke above, Werewolves tend to have incredible strength and/or speed. They're killing machines to be respected, despite the furry crap.
You can become a werewolf yourself, and when transformed you are forced into third person, must consume corpses to stay transformed and heal, and get an absolute rape claw attack. While not transformed, you gain immunity to disease, and lose the ability to gain rested bonuses. It should also be noted that PC werewolves can only transform once every 24 hours without the help of Hircine and are one of the fastest creatures in the game, easily outpacing even the best horses. The aforementioned 'help' from Hircine is a ring that lets you transform whenever you want, but until its quest is finished will transform you at random. Unless you're not a werewolf, allowing you to get the purified ring without having to deal with the curse, something Hircine apparently never thought of. Also worth noting is that the AWESOME dlc Dawnguard (Yes dlcs are rarely awesome, but this one includes overzealous paladins led by a bald bearded Samuel l. Jackson and helping out a hot vampire chick who is a kickass follower) will allow the player to gain werewolf perks by eating corpses in Beast form. these perks can then be used to make you into an absolute killing machine.

HULK SMASH!)

Common weaknesses include weapons made from silver (a "pure" metal), and a plant called "wolfsbane" that seems to have no other purpose than to show up in equipment lists for fantasy games.

Many stories say that the cursed types will transform during the three days of a full moon; some make them transform when they experience intense emotions such as lust or anger (q.v. HULK SMASH!)

Common weaknesses include weapons made from silver (a "pure" metal), and a plant called "wolfsbane" that seems to have no other purpose than to show up in equipment lists for fantasy games.

They're killing machines to be respected, despite the furry crap.
;Dungeons & Dragons
:Werewolves started out as just the "lycanthrope" monster type, but issues of Dragon Magazine and later editions allowed players to add werewolf-ism as a feature of their character, or to take lycanthrope as a race like "elf" or "dwarf." Werewolves are always the disease type, with voluntary transformations. They are immune to damage unless you're using magic or silver weapons. There were also "wolf-weres," who have a huge hate-on for their opposite numbers. Both kinds were pretty common in Ravenloft setting. the 3.5 Edition setting "Eberron" adds the player race "Shifter" which has very minor werewolf traits.

;Old World of Darkness
:Werewolves are genetic, the product of having a werewolf ancestor. You could be born a wolf that turns into a human, or a human that turns into a wolf. Werewolves are considered heroes fighting for hippy-dippy nature causes, do some special nature magic, and are always in danger of flipping out and killing everyone they can reach. They are in control of their transformations, they have a half-way state that is fuckawesome, and they can regenerate from any wounds unless it was caused by silver or fire or other werewolves.

;New World of Darkness
:Werewolves are genetic, the product of having a werewolf ancestor. You're born human, but transform into a werewolf "when the time is right", probably killing everything in sight in the process. Werewolves are the descendants of two mighty spirits (Mother Luna and Father Wolf), are charged with policing the spirit world, can do magic, and are always in danger of flipping out and killing everyone they can reach. They are in control of their transformations, they have a half-way state that is fuckawesome, and they can regenerate from any wounds unless it was caused by silver.

;Shadowrun
:Werewolves are people infected with a disease were they transform under a full moon. Instead of becoming animals, they de-evolve into monstrous forms of their own species, making humans "were-neanderthals." True werewolves are animals who are altered in birth with the same magic that turns human babies spontaneously into elves, orcs or trolls, but these animals are born with the ability to shift into human shape.

;Warhammer 40,000
:A special order of Space Marines dubbed "Space Wolves" are infused with wolf-beast traits in their genetics during training. Part of the process of earning their place among the Adeptus Astartes is to learn to suppress their bestial urges. Those that fail become Wulfen, those that succeed keep their intelligence and loyalty to the Emperor of Mankind, and gain resistance to the corrupting effects of Chaos and The Warp. The bestial traits still grow slowly. Under extreme conditions (Like the nightmare hellhole that is the Eye of Terror), many Space Wolves have shown increased wolf-like traits, to the point where they more or less become Space Marine Werewolves (a.k.a. Wulfen). With these Wulfen, the outnumbered Space Wolves 13th company has been kicking Chaos ass since M30.

;Ars Magica
:Werewolves are cursed, either by magic or by faeries, but some player-controlled companions or grogs can be werewolves who can control the transformation.

;Rifts
:Modern humans are actually were-apes that lost the ability to change back. There is also a species called Loup-Garou that are Nazi Furries that must be killed twice, once in each shape, to stay dead.

;Iron Kingdoms
:The Iron Kingdoms houses a faction called the Circle of Oroboros, a conclave of druids trying to protect the balance of Order and Chaos, nature and civilization. They worship the Devourer Wurm, the aspect of nature, and he grants them all kinds of awesome, if kinda furry powers - There among the Warpwolf, humans warped into wolflike forms, used by the druids to kill and maim in the Wurms name and to defend nature from those who harm it. No one really know if that human can change around to human again.

;Deadlands
:The DuPont family are inbred black magicians cursed with being werewolves.

Werewolves in video games
;World of Warcraft
:With the launch of Cataclysm, Worgen are a playable race. They possess racial bonuses granting Shadow and Nature resistance, as well as a +1% Critical Strike bonus. They also /sniff and /roar. Horde can't wait to learn how to skin em in the next patch. They're also angry English people, led by a badass old man called Genn MOTHERFUCKING Greymane. And a drunken Irishman called Darius Crowley. An obvious reference to the song of Ozzy Osbourne, but not the Occultist.

;Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind
:Bloodmoon expansion allows for a player character to become a werewolf. The player can choose to keep the curse or have it removed. Basically, the Werewolf version of the player character is a rape-tastic machine of outright slaughter. This can be a handy tool for clearing out tougher dungeons. Just don't let yourself be spotted transforming, or you're screwed. Any and all town guards will try to kill you. As to be expected they are vulnerable to silver and there is no short supply of silver weapons available in Bloodmoon.

;Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
:Werewolves make a return- the Circle of The Companions are all Werewolves, and are opposed by the Silver Hand, a band of werewolf-hunters who all employ silver weapons. Transforming against a group of them is tantamount to suicide, At least in the beginning. when you reach the higher levels they're piss easy. The Rape train will have no brakes...

2605:E000:7ECF:7F00:A876:AE1C:6196:2FC4: /* Justify your character knowing these things */

<center>How do you know what you can or cannot shapeshift into?</center>

In roleplaying games with fantasy elements shapeshifting abilities can be within the reach of the party. So of course one day one of the players might come up with a character whose main gimmick is being a shapeshifter, or rolls a Druid in D&D/Pathfinder. This allows for a lot of freedom and potentially interesting roleplaying from that character, it might also horribly break the game and allow that one character to steamroll the entire campaign on their own. While some shapeshifting abilities contain an in-build limit in the rules with how many shapes are available, not all games do this. As such it might be necessary to limit this ability. But doing so might cripple the shapeshifter in question, which won't make the player in question happy. So now and then, DMs make posts on how to handle such shapeshifting. They ask what is known as the Familiarity Question.

What to do as a player
Players have three things to do when making such a character, and they have to stick with them all the way.

Oath of Humility: aka Don't Be a Munchkin
Few things are more annoying in a game than to have one player solve all of the problems the party faces without anyone else getting a say in this. As such, players will have to state to everyone (both the DM and the party) that yes, they are aware they can do a lot of things and they must SWEAR to not use their powers to break the game or overshadow the other party members. Aka: don't solo the game. This will garner a lot of goodwill with the rest of the party.

Write up your bestiary
Having someone go through several books to see what they can turn into to help the party, or write up a new form for a situation is VERY ANNOYING for it grinds the game to a halt. If you want to turn into a variety of things, you have two ways of doing this.

* Write down all your forms. In case that you can generate infinite forms on your own, make sure you have a form ready to go. Order them by name, by type, by species; whatever works for you as long as it is fast to look up. Use sticky notes for various types if you need them.
* When you want to use critters from the Monster Manual or other physical books, know where they are. Don't go turning pages to see what works best: know what you want to turn into, then flip to that page. And please, use your own books for this effort. As a rule of thumb, if it takes longer than a turn (6 seconds or so) to look something up you're doing it wrong.

Additionally, you might find it useful to keep notes with several forms fit to a specific solution. For example:

* Fighting: War Troll, Cloud Giant, Chain Devil
* Flying: Pegasus, Roc, Air Elemental, Gargoyle, Young Red Dragon
* Social: Succubus, Nymph, Changeling
* Swimming: Dragon Turtle, Water Elemental, Sahuagin, Plesiosaurus

If the rules indicate that your stats contribute to the creature's stats, make sure to calculate this along the way. Make tables if you need them to determine things like your new AC if you have armor that contributes to this.

Justify your character knowing these things
Both the easiest and the hardest part. Have a reason for your character to know all these creatures. Maybe he was raised by a circle of druids who taught him all about the creatures of the natural world? Maybe your grandfather was a renowned ranger who wrote some great almanac of the monsters of the world, from which he read to his beloved granddaughter. Maybe your parents were Aberration hunters who wanted their child to know of the monsters they faced? Or maybe you're playing a GENTLEMAN ADVENTURER who is in it to hunt and bag all the great beasts of the world. Make something up, something fun and with hooks for the DM and you'll be set.

Things a DM can do
As a DM you have the final say in what your players will or will not do. As such it is in your power to say no to powergaming shenanigans, but keep in mind that your players want to have fun. So there's a few things you can do. Whatever you do, to make sure to tell this to your player while you're still in the character creation stage and not right before the start of a session.

Tell your player to do all of the above
Simply put, the steps above give the player the most freedom (and indulge their desire to play a shapeshifter), at the cost of breaking the game. Make sure to stress the importance of the non-Munchkinnery statement for them, the party and the campaign as a whole.

Limit depending on the character's abilities
A more convoluted way of dealing with them. Determine how many forms a character can know based on some kind of stat (flat number plus one of its stats, maybe level or a skill as well). This might appear arbitrary to a player and might end with them minmaxing to get the most out of their character, which may result in them not having a good time.

Have them roll Knowledge (whatever)
Elegant on paper, useless in practice. Druids can turn into natural animals, but since those are all bound to the same skill it's just a matter of minmaxing it (or just plain old leveling up) to reliably roll for the specific creature's Knowledge DC. Do try and avoid invoking Bear Lore, beause as we all know that's just stupid. On the other hand, a character such as a Master of Many Forms who can turn into monsters linked to a variety of different sources (kind of how an Archivist's class feature works). This means that there are at least five Knowledge skills the character will need to invest in (not all of whom will be on their skill list) to get the most out of their character, which will result in the player trying to minmax his character, which is not a desirable result.

Limit them to whatever they have seen
The WYSIWYG solution. Only allow your player to change shape into the the creatures their character has seen, with perhaps some basic forms. On one hand this will make the forms in question limited and easy to manage, and might be a desirable solution when dealing with new players. For a more experienced player however this will cripple their character and greatly limit their most important class feature, which will not be the solution the player is going for.

No shapeshifters
The simplest yet most rigorous solution: ban shapeshifters altogether. If you want to do something like this make sure to tell the players in advance, right at the first steps of the campaign. If you do this while setting the tone for the campaign you can have players know what to expect and will design their characters with this in mind. If you do this all the time however this might eventually create resistance from your players, who'll want you to change this or, perhaps for the best, have them give it a shot at DMing.

Summary
When facing a shapeshifter inform the player of the concerns and limits you have when dealing with shapeshifters. Imposing limits outside of what is in the rulebooks might be met with resistance, but if you have a player who can handle the freedom you should definitely allow them to play with the sheer versatility of the shapeshifter.

Pre-christian Celtic priests often associated with nature and divination. And human sacrifice. Don't forget the human sacrifice. In modern times druidism has been revived under the new-age movements minus human sacrifice. In fantasy druids are often powerful magicians or cleric variants who get their powers from communing with nature, more like historical shamans.

Druids have long been a staple class of D&D where they are known for their shapeshifting abilities, being able to turn into various animal forms, and being hilariously broken in 3.5e. Using this ability might incur the Familiarity Question, so make sure to run this by the DM prior to playing a Druid.

Druids can turn into bears whose stats have been buffed into the stratosphere who can summon bears whose own stats have been buffed into the stratosphere out of their eyes while farting lightning, pissing acid, shitting explosive berries, and breathing fire that does irresistible damage, thus making your fighter look lame. A little harder to break in Pathfinder, but still top-tier.

However, in D&D 5th edition, buff spells have been changed and the Druid no longer gets an animal companion; however, this is quickly brushed aside when players realize that they can wildshape into a bear at 2nd level (as a bonus action) thanks to the Circle of the Moon. Druids get two choices in 5e: Circle of the Lands, where they pick a chosen land (the Underdark is on the list) and get spells relating to it. Circle of the Moon gives them tons and tons of shapeshifting bonuses, as well as the ability to heal themselves while in wildshape by burning spells. They also have Druidcraft, a spammable cantrip that can work like a weather app, tiny amounts of fertilizer, a candle, or matches depending on how you need to prove your druidic might to someone today.

They are a mysterious bunch. No one knows who they are, or what they are doing.

Druids are usually fairly close to being "good guys" since, even if their official thing is all about "preserve nature", the fact that bad guys in D&D tend to messing around with necromancy or summoning fiends tends to make for at least "enemy of my enemy is my friend" alliances. Evil druids are, honestly, something of a minority -- but they do happen. Forgotten Realms has the Shadow Circle, which are militant anti-city druids who want to violently destroy all forms of civilization. Eberron has two; the Circle of the Ashbound believe (falsely) that arcane magic harms nature and that destroying magical items and users is good for nature - long story short, it involves their founder killing a lich who'd been screwing around with nature and then noticing nature bounced back really well afterward - and the Children of Winter, social darwinists who believe that "Winter is coming!" and launch eco-terrorist attacks on civilization to winnow out the weak and ensure only the strong will be left to keep everybody from dying out during the "winter phase" of Eberron's life.
