I am proof... OF THE EMPEROR'S MIGHT!

Living Saints are Imperial <s>Daemon Princes</s> *BLAM!.... ehem ... as I was saying... Living Saints are, as the name implies, saints who are canonized before death. Often, this is due to the ability to perform fantastic miracles seemingly at will, such as resurrecting the dead, rapidly healing from even the most grievous wounds, or making daemons spontaneously combust with a glance. They're basically zombie-Buddhist angels with absolutely fabulous hair. Living Saints are almost always members of the Adepta Sororitas and thus mostly female, however Living Saints have also arisen from the ranks of the Imperial Guard.

Overview
Living Saints themselves are exceptionally rare even in the Ecclesiarchy, let alone the wider Imperium as the deeds needed to make a Living Saint are almost next to impossible to accomplish. In order to even have a chance at becoming one, the particular individual must be innocent, pure, incorruptible, forgiving when needed, vigilant when needed, merciful to the weak, merciless to the guilty, kind, compassionate, charitable, selfless, modest, heroic, brave and reasonable. And this is just the personal qualities, not to mention the external qualities especially when considering the judgement of both the Ecclesiarchy and the Inquisition. Essentially, Living Saints are the purest, pure, pure, 100% purity approved human in its purest form which is an impressive feat on its own, making Living Saints by definition more pure than the Emperor himself...at least in the personality and maternity department.

This said, they aren't all nice - Saint Lozepath was dangerously self-aware of his own divinity status and was not afraid to abuse it, to the extent of promising to execute a Space Marine chapter master for questioning his orders or engaging on incredibly risky courses of action on the premise they would be kept safe.

The arrival of a Living Saint is often rare as they only appear during times of hopelessness and despair, but when they do appear they can turn the most cowardly of Guardsmen into a Khornate Supermen that could take on an entire tank division. On the battlefield, Living Saints are manifestations of the Emperor's might, using the powers at their disposal to ruthlessly purge the enemies of man. In a galaxy of Grimdark Living Saints are the brightest beacon for hope and a testament to humanities resolve.

Powers and Abilities
Living Saints are among the mightiest beings in the Imperium, said to be blessed by a portion of the God-Emperor's power. They are often able to decimate foes with blasts of holy fire and are seemingly impervious to all but the most potent attacks. They often carry a large holy sword blessed with holy scripture and possibly anti-daemonic wards. This makes Living Saints the worst units for Chaos to fight against save for Grey Knights.

Many Living Saints can also conjure angelic wings, allowing them to bring righteous death from the air. Death itself is not permanent for a Living Saint as they can be resurrected should the Imperium need their help again, although the process is extremely taxing and can be stopped, as happened with Saint Gerstahl. This ability is explored in more depth in Fall of Cadia, and as is the case with everything in Warhammer 40k, it's far more grimdark than one might expect.

Dawn of War
Living Saints feature in the Soulstorm expansion pack of Dawn of War. While they were arguably one of the weakest relic units, they have been often seen as a really annoying unit thanks to their resurrection abilities. Due to the fact that Living Saints have relatively low health in contrast to other relic units as well as low damage per hit, they often lose against the likes of Greater Knarlocs and Bloodthirsters which are units that are supposed to be easily defeatable by Living Saints in the fluff. So it was often best to use Living Saints as a support unit as its resurrection ability and high morale in the faith-o-meter makes it great when grouped with a large Sisters army.

Notable Living Saints
*Saint Anais, also known as the Scourge of Heretics. She's the living saint from Soulstorm. There's not much to say about her except that she looks and acts almost exactly like Celestine, begging the question of why they didn't just use her instead of making their own character. During the sisters of battle's stronghold defense, she is able to teleport from shrine to shrine while acting like a DISTRACTION CARNIFEX against the intruders. Regardless, she "dies" after all the shrine and the stronghold were to be destroyed.
*Saint Gerstahl, legendary soldier of the Imperial Guard
*Saint Grendel, noted Daemon slayer of the Ordo Malleus
*Saint Sabbat, founder of the Sabbat Worlds
*Saint Celestine
*Macharius Lord Solar - one of the greatest saints of the Imperial Guard
Land is Kislev, Kislev is land.
THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!

Kislev is the northenmost civilized state in the Old world, and the first line of defense against the hordes of Chaos that regularly spill out of Norsca to the far north.

Historically, Kislev is the result of the inter-mingling of main tribal confederations; the native Ungols of the north, the Gospodars in the south, and the long dead Roppsmenn tribes. The former two are in fact the off-shoots of the Kurgan tribes of the northeast. To this day, the Ungols maintain good relationship with those Chaos marauders, who have such wonderfully well thought out names such as "Dolgan", "Khazag" and "Kul".

In case you can't tell, Kislev is like Tsarist Russia. But only in the weak, decadent south. In the strong, manly north, it actually turns into Mongolia, Poland and the Turkic countries (Khazakhstan, Uzbekistan, etc). And the Kurgans who dwell east of the Norsemen are basically Siberians.

In essence, Kislev is a fantasy version of Russia. It's also named after Kievan Rus, as in the old Russian kingdom and the current capital city of Ukraine, all GW did was tack on two letters in the middle of Kiev. In the 1980s when Kislev was created there was no country called Ukraine, it was all just "Russia" to almost the whole world.

Also, Kislev is no more according to the whole return of Nagash thing GW has planned. At last, Archaon has done that which Napoleon, Hitler, the USA and the EU could only dream of -- the annihilation of Russia.

History of Kislev
The Ungol people have populated the land of Kislev since the empire was founded and even helped support Sigmar in his first days of being the Emperor which created a bond between the empire and Kislev that lasts to to this day. They promise each other to help each other if one or the other was invaded.

Kislev as it is known now got started about 1500 IC when the Gospodar Tribe fled the encroaching Chaos wastes. The native Ungol people where not match for the wealth, arms, and magic of the Gospodar Tribe (the Empire at this time was going through a civil war and could not help the Ungols). The settlement of Praag grew in size as the Gospodars used the Lynsk to launch incursions into Ungol territory, eventually forcing the Ungol to accept Gospodar rule (who were now beginning to be called Kislevites after their capital city). Eventually the Ungols settled on the northern border of modern day Kislev where their people still reside mainly as the first line of defense against Chaos marauders. The south of Kislev is considered more civilized and even has some influence from the Empire.

Over the past 750 years the two people have basically intermingled so that now almost everyone sees themselves as people of Kislev.

The Gospodar people have virtually all the power in the nation with the Tzars all being descended from the first Gospodar emperor and almost all the nobles are Gospodar. This is changing lately because Tzarina Katrarin has been uplifting more and more Ungol men into leadership roles to further tighten her grip on the nation.

In order for the Warriors of Chaos to get to the Empire on foot they have to go through Kislev. So the horde that shows up in the empire is actually a hell of a lot smaller than when they marched out. Kislev has been on the forefront of the chaos wastes since its inception and not once has the nation fallen. That basically means these guys have balls of steel on par with the Imperial Guard. At least thats how it was until the end times. In current fluff, Archaon has finally destroyed Kislev and only one city still stands.

Religion in Kislev
Like the Empire to the south the people of Kislev have multiple deities but the main one is the Cult of Ursun the Father of Bears. Other common gods in Kislev are Dazh, Tor, Taal, and Ulric.

Collecting Kislev
In Warmaster, Kislev used to have both an official army list and a nice line of miniatures. In WHFB, things are a little more complicated. While there is no official army book for them, aside their supplements in the 4th and 6º edition, there is also the warhammer fantasy roleplay book "Realm of the Ice Queen". There are good fan made ones which do include Bear Cavalry which in turn makes all other human armies seem pathetic (except for the Warriors of Chaos, who are motherfucking Vikings). (Honestly that's easily debatable. These manly fuckers fight giant chaos monsters with a bow, rocks, and an axe. And you think they ask for help?)There are even a few official models made for them and a small White Dwarf list for them but that is out of date. Additionally, the Privateer Press line of Khador models for Warmachine give off the nice fantasy/russian look, if going only for infantry, with the Doom Reavers, Kossite Woodsmen, and Greylord models. If you need bears, you can grab their Brun and Lug set.
