wh40k-stub
The Black Guard are a rare second founding successor of the Raven Guard Chapter. They have a sweet colour scheme (that looks similar to the white scars) and a tendency to rely on bombing the complete ever-living fuck out of anything stupid enough to declare itself an enemy, because half measures are no measures at all, and who needs an ambush if the enemy is already gone? Like many successor Chapters their history has been <strike>nuked to shit</strike> lost to the passages of time and buried in the annals of forgotten history, such is life.

They were formed from the Shadow Wardens, which served as Corax's personal bodyguard during the Horus Heresy. As you can imagine they took quite a beating during the Drop Site Massacre and their commander (later Chapter Master) Gherith Arendi was said to have survived only by using other legionnaires as a distraction in order to steal a shuttle and escape. Dick move. (Although this might explain where pounding sticks of dynamite into peoples asses rubbed off on them.) In the 41st millenium, they were last seen in the very opening phases of the Charadon invasion, repealing multiple Death Guard vectoriums in the world of Dryoch's Reach. Although given the amount of forces Typhus brought to bear against the Forge World of Metallica, they only managed to delay the inevitable.

The only other thing really known about them is the reconfirmation of the deterioration of their geneseed, requiring resupply of purer stocks from Terra (have they not built up their own stocks by 10 thousand years? The gene seed repository may have been attacked since they apparently did deliver the tithe enough to build a reserve there).

Plus they had a Master of the Forge called Germanius. So they have a possibility for pimping names.

Besides that, ambushes with overwhelming firepower? Fuck yeah! Count me in!

The Black Consuls are a primogenitor chapter of space marines formed from the 22nd Chapter of the Ultramarines legion during the Second Founding. Its first master Arrias Cordos was known as "The Bane of Lorgar". Originally they were a fleet based crusading chapter much like the Black Templars, operating from the star fort: Noctis Obscurum until it was blown up by Dark Eldar infiltrators, causing them to lose all of their armoury, relics and written records. And yes, that does sound incredibly suspicious, especially with their first Chapter Master being a reference to Lorgar, in whatever form, from the Second Founding. Those that were away at the time of its destruction later settled on Cyclopia, a Hive World where the gangers were noted for tattooing the names of fallen comrades on their flesh, a tradition which carried on to the Space Marines that adopted them.

They were recorded as annihilated in 455.M41 at the siege of Goddeth Hive. While many marines certainly survived because they were elsewhere at the time (it is uncommon for an entire chapter to fight together), the great majority of the chapter was destroyed when the Iron Warriors they were about to defeat detonated the hive's nucleonic stacks and wiped out the whole northern continent.

History and noted Engagements
*M.38 On Baliaris Majoris, the Black Consuls fought against a cult's uprising lead by the heretic prophetess Constanze.
*Late M.40/ Early M.41 The Black Consuls used to be a space borne chapter until their star fort -the Noctis Obscurum- was destroyed by Dark Eldar Saboteurs. The chapter then moved to the planet of Cyclopia, and spent the next three centuries beating the living shit out of each and every one of them in a war that stretched across 15 star systems and ended up collapsing an entire sub-dimension of the webway. Note that it does not seem that the Dark Eldar have fucked with them since then. The rest of the Imperium should take notes.
*455.M41 The Black Consuls were falsely recorded as being annihilated during the Siege of Goddeth Hive. Details are scarce but the Iron Warriors were about to be overrun and instead of taking it they detonated the Hive they were defending.

Chapter Tactics and Character
The Black Consuls are some of Roboute Guilliman's biggest fans. They are one of the most strict adherents to the Codex Astartes and several past chapter masters have formed some of the most valuable counselors to the Lord of Macragge.

The Black Consuls are renowned for starting off their campaign with a massed drop pod assault conducted by the entire chapter. Less of a steel rain tactic than a Steel Fuckstorm. This makes them one of the very few Chapters to realize that the Chapters were intended to fight the same way they did during the Great Crusade. Back then, Space Marines usually operated through individual Chapters just like they do now. Except back then the entire Chapter deployed together. Which is probably what Guilliman understandably expected the Astartes to continue doing as they always had. The Black Consuls were (are?) one of the 20 Astartes Praeses Chapters who were (are?) tasked with guarding the outskirts of the Eye of Terror.

Current Status
The fact that <s>possibly entire squads survived </s>THE ENTIRE CHAPTER HAS BEEN REBUILT WITH PRIMARIS MARINES is a very bad thing for the Iron Warriors (and Word Bearers who are also believed to have had a hand in their defeat.) This is because the Black Consuls have a noted tendency to hold genocidal grudges against enemies who have hurt them, like the Dark Eldar for instance;

Also, there is definitely a small force on campaign in the Jericho Reach on the Achillus Crusade. They decided to stick around until a messenger came back, but apparently 250 years isn't too long to wait, so its possible that they're still there.

Cyclopia is still their homeworld. It is a Hive World in Segmentum Obscurus in the Calixis sector. This is not to be confused with the planet Cyclopea, which is a forge world in the same sector. To make matters more confusing, the 9th ed codex says the Black Consuls are "stalwart protectors of the Segmentum Pacificus".

Relics & Armor
Lorgar's Bane: A Power Axe the Black Consuls used to use against butthurt children. They thought they lost it along with their original Chapter Master until it turned out the Deathwatch took it.

The Aurora Chapter is one of the many successor Chapters of the Ultramarines produced during the Second Founding; they specialize in massed armored assaults, and are reputed to have more Land Raiders and Predators than any other Chapter in the Imperium. They have been involved in a number of campaigns, in recent note the Zeist Campaign against the Tau. Having more tanks than God requires having a sufficient source of parts and ammunition, and so the Aurora Chapter has their home world of Firestorm, which is a Forgeworld so capable it can rival the output of several high profile Mechanicus worlds combined. In effect, the planet can be considered the Chapter's forge, with a large percentage of its output diverted to supplying the Chapter. Since they are technically only supposed to have a thousand marines...who is using the shiny shit? Either they have waaaaay more marines than they should, or they are using serfs to man their cool stuff. Both of which are reasonable. Or their armored crews are considered part of the armory and so their numbers are not limited by the Codex Astartes. Or maybe they have a shit ton of Tech-Marines given their recruiting world is a freaking Forge World (also not limited by the Codex).

According to Forge World's Horus Heresy books, they are likely to be descended from the Ultramarines' 4th Chapter, the "Aurorans". It's noted that even during the Great Crusade, they had five times as many armored vehicles as a typical Chapter in the Legiones Astartes (and keep in mind that this was when the Iron Hands were still at full strength and would also be skewing the numbers).

They are mentioned as having a feud with the Knights of the Raven chapter, after having taken unacceptable losses while fighting alongside them; this was further exacerbated when the Aurora Chapter accused the Knights of the Raven of cultivating superstitious heresy on their own homeworld of Coralax (though this seems absurd since there are so many chapters with feudal/feral backgrounds, that it seems a bit petty that any other chapter would care), when the Knights took insult at the obviously inflammatory remarks, the two chapters came to blows. The issue was only resolved when Marneus Calgar stepped in and quietly mentioned that the Knights of the Raven should go on a penitent crusade, which they did. While this implies that the Aurora Chapter might have been right, one must consider that they also got into a similar fight with the the Emperor's Spears. So maybe the Aurora Chapter are just a bunch of whiny pricks.

Cool Shit
Once upon a time, the tread heads lost a beloved Land Raider in the xenos/heretic infested Jericho Reach. The Deathwatch recovered the tank, but found it to be beyond repair; however, knowing the Aurora Chapter had a massive piercing hard-on for their tanks, they decided to do their battle-brothers a solid by taking its main axle and reforging it into a thunder hammer by the name of Remembrance. It was thought that doing this would allow the destroyed machine to avenge its destruction, and every marine that has wielded the weapon in battle swears it strikes with the force of a tank, which is Awesome.

There is also some discrepancy about the chapter's numbers. In 3rd Edition, they were cited as having over a thousand predator tanks alongside the rest of their sizable tank force; however, in 4th edition and later this is scaled back to more Predators and Land Raiders than three chapters combined (the Heresy Era Aurorans had more than five times that of a normal chapter). So, if you take the current disposition of the Ultramarines as an approximation of a "normal chapter", that gives the Aurorans somewhere between 75 and 125 Predators and 30 and 50 Land Raiders.

Despite their predilection for massed tank combat alongside their typical battle contingents, they aren't hinted at being massively divergent from the Codex Astartes, which is normal - the Codex organisation doesn't have listed numbers of vehicle drivers in their armouries; many are assigned as required from the 6th or 7th Tactical Reserves and likely return to their company duties when their vehicle is not selected for a mission. Some individuals may exist permanently attached to the chapter's armoury and come to specialise in armoured operations and are commonly associated with larger or rarer vehicles. The Aurorans may indeed have more of these specialists than any other chapter commensurate to their greater number of vehicles. In the 5th Edition codex, Antaro Chronus was said to have command of fifty brother-marines, though this likely includes both the permanent armoury staff and transitory vehicle operators when they are called to ride to war. Using the three times rule, we can extrapolate that the Aurora Chapter have around 150 vehicle operators in various positions around the companies and from the armoury itself, meaning they may have more tanks than drivers.

Alternatively, (though there is no evidence to support this whatsoever since no other Codex Chapter does this) Their large vehicle pool could be maintained by either having their serfs man the tanks or perhaps using aspirants for it. The Aurorans would no doubt desire aspirants who are talented in armored warfare. If so, this may well be one of the most effective Chapters as they would be capable of leveling Great Crusade level armored support in addition with fielding all of their Space Marines without wasting any crewing vehicles (other than rare ones like Land Raiders). If not, then they are among the most moronic of Chapters as the whole reason Predators and such are used instead of Leman Russ tanks is that the Space Marines are practically walking vehicles anyway and something fast to provide support around the battlefield wherever needed is what the Space Marines most often require. Although given that Aspirants are children, this idea would mean their tanks are being driven by a bunch of boys not old enough to shave. Which is uh...weird even for 40k. Well, weird in that they're not lobotomized child robot-things wired into the machine as living CPUs. So, weird for not being horrific as fuck.

More realistically, since Astartes already generally rely on small elite surgical strikes rather than thundering vehicle formations, having flexible vehicles with small crews that can help fill in the Devastator (and to a lesser extent Tactical) role. In all likelihood, these guys keep many of their vehicles stored as spares and deploy different amounts of them depending on the need and use for them, which is how most chapters operate anyway. Orbital assets, scouts, and fast attack elements would make it a priority to target anti-armor forces (and so would the vehicles themselves), which they kind of already do since small arms tend not to bother Astartes too much, and they tend to have valuable goodies they can't really afford to replace. The problem with this idea (that they're just maintained and packaged out like normal Chapters) is that it nullifies their specialty and so is probably incorrect. Since they have a specialty in armored warfare and using huge numbers of tanks.

Daily Routine
04:00 - Wake up: The Aurora Chapter awaken, climbing out of their tanks and land raiders. The Chapter Master usually gets a Land Raider with the other leaders, with veterans and specialized marines climbing out of Predators. Standard battle brothers will climb from their Vindicators, while scouts and neophytes worm their way out of the Rhinos. Some women will be seen sneaking out of the fortress-monastery.

04:30 - Morning Prayer: The Aurora Chapter pray to the Emperor and the Omnissiah. The image they worship is a giant effigy of the Emperor with a tank cannon on his arm and a HECK ton of bionics.

05:00 - Tank Maintenance: The Techmarines and all other battle brothers polish and repair any damaged or slightly dirty tanks they possess. Any Marine who fails in this task must do chores for the Techmarines for a week.

06:00 - Morning Firing Rites: The Aurora Chapter fire tank rounds at cut-outs and remote control combat bikes. The chapter serfs wonder how in the Emperor's name they managed to fit a battle tank into a firing range designed for infantry only.

08:00 - Morning Battle Practice: Completing their marksmanship practice, the Aurora Chapter proceeds to use their tanks in combat, simulating battles against the orks, Tyranids, Tau, and Heretics. Yelling "DRIVE ME CLOSER! I WANT TO HIT THEM WITH MY SWORD!" whilst swinging a chainsword at battle servitors is required. Using any other weapon will result in cooking duty for a week.

09:30 - Morning Meal: The Aurora Chapter proceed to cook food on their now sizzling hot tank barrels. Special recognition is given to the marine who can eat the fastest and return to his respective tank.

10:00 - Tactical indoctrination: The Aurora Chapter return to the fortress monastery to study the subject of tanks. Kursk and Villers-Bretonneux are frequent topics of study, whilst ancient holosims such as "War Thunder", and "Steel Beasts" are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of tanks, and the miniature war-game "Team Yankee" is used by command staff.

12:00 - Afternoon Meal: The Aurora Chapter cease their studies to eat a light meal. The chapter serfs are required to cook all hot food with pans made from the melted down metal of enemy tanks.

13:00 - Afternoon Battle Practice: The Aurora chapter uses servitors to pilot enemy tanks they managed to purchase off the kleptomaniacs, as they fire on and destroy them to simulate an armored conflict. Driving in neat lines en masse is the standard tactic. The Aurora Chapter always make sure to check their inventory before allowing the Blood Ravens to leave.

15:00 - Afternoon Firing Rites: The Aurora Chapter tearfully step out of their tanks in order to hone their skills with small arms. However, their tears prevent them from firing accurately, and almost always miss their targets.

18:00 - Evening Firing Rites: The Aurora Chapter get fed up, and open the special gates, allowing Land Raiders onto the firing range. They cheer and laugh as the pathetic cutout targets are destroyed by magnificent rays of lascannon fire. The serfs who aren't busy elsewhere get the answer to how the tanks get onto the firing range.

19:00 - Evening Feast: The Aurora Chapter Return to their great hall, where they feast on fine food and drink, happy for another productive day's work. Younger marines look up in awe at the recognition that some of the tank drivers receive in the chapter, inspiring them to do better.

20:00 - Evening Prayer: The Aurora Chapter pray and give thanks to the Emperor/Omnissiah for another productive day's work. During this time, the Techmarines will repair any damage to the tanks.

21:00 - Tank Construction: Techmarines instruct younger and less experienced marines in tank maintenance, showing them the finer details of the subject by helping them build small models. Many battle brothers take it up as a hobby, in order to better understand armored vehicles and have something to do.

23:00 - Free time: The Aurora Chapter pimps out their best Land Raiders and drive into the nearest Adeptas Sororitas convent. Special recognition is given to the marines that manage to get a Sister to accept a ride on their Land Raider.

01:00 - Bedtime: Some Sisters are returned from the tank to the convent, and the chapter park their tanks. the Chapter proceeds to go to sleep in their respective tanks.
The Angels Vermillion is a Second Founding chapter of the Blood Angels and one of the oldest chapters in the Imperium, alongside its brother chapters from the original legion.

Unlike its brother chapters who have maintained close ties with each other and their parent chapter, the Angels Vermillion are aloof snooty bastards who prefer to keep to themselves, whether it be from fellow marines from other chapters or non-marine humans. This is because every 50 years or so, the chapter steals away mortals during a time called "The Sorrowing", where they render the kidnapped people unconscious, and place them in specially-prepared body bags in their Chapter monastery - charmingly called "The Bloodspike". They would then exsanguinate the doomed mortals, draining them of their blood completely and methodically on specially prepared conveyor belts with special machines built to extract blood. At least the victims are unconscious during the whole ordeal, and the depressing name implies that the Angels Vermillion honestly feel bad with committing such an atrocity regularly... which is more than can be said about nearly anyone else in this fucked-up galaxy.

Now for the longer version!

'Eminence Sanguis' short story
spoilers

Basically Astorath, a captain, two of his guys, and the (at the time) High Chaplain Hereon (it's set in the 400's of M41 and Astorath isn't the High Chaplain yet) go to investigate the disappearance of civilian ships and refugees of a world liberated by the Angels Vermillion. The Angels Vermillion only very reluctantly only allow Hereon down to the world, and it was very tense. The chapter master of the AV says he'll send the ships back, but the people (in fact everyone in the fortress monastery) are missing. Hereon basically demands to know why, and so he shows him. They have all of the civilians and chapter serfs put in an industralized slaughterhouse where they are all drained of blood in a ritual that happens once every fifty years called "the Sorrowing". Hereon freaks out, kills two of the Sanguinary Guard (who are painted red, not gold, and take on a more daemonic aspect) and then gets stopped. The chapter master says he doesn't want to do it but they found right after the Heresy that they had the thirst. They originally thought it was just them, and that's what started their seclusion (it was and is out of shame). But they fall to the thirst and rage less than most of the others.

Hereon criticizes him, and the chapter master basically says they are all doomed anyways, and that they save more than they kill, and that the Blood Tithe is a small price to pay for their greater service. He then explains how much they honor those that give their blood and they even kill a Sanguinary Priest to add the Blood of Sanguinius to the big pool of blood as a huge honor. Hereon once again freaks out and says he and Dante will expose them, and the CM basically says, "do that and I'll tell the Inquisition all about our flaw, and they'll kill us (all the sons of Sanguinius)." He then lets him go and tells him to never return. He (the CM) continuously emphasizes that they ARE monsters, but that they aren't as bad, and they do it so that they can continue to save people and bring light to the shadow.

The Sorrowing is the chapter's solution for the Red Thirst, as they gather so much blood to drink that it lasts them until the next harvest. This is the reason for their secrecy. Only the Blood Angels know of the true modus operandi of Angels Vermillion.

So he just tells Dante.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately for the Imperium), Hereon never realizes that the Inquisition either A) already knows about the flaws (because both are stupidly obvious, especially with the whole Death Company thing) and B) the Inquisition would only kill those who embrace their mutation in a way harmful to the Imperium. On the other hand, the Inquisition may well agree with the Angels Vermillion that the Blood Tithe truly is a small price to pay for Blood Angel descendants who are at a far less risk of ripping and tearing the wrong side of a battlefield.

Of course, the Angels Vermillion are too stupid to realize they don't have to take so much blood it kills anyone and could simply gather blood from volunteers or serfs over the course of that whole fifty years and then they'd probably have more blood than ex-sanguinating a bunch of people would give anyway.

TL;DR It's like the Blood Drinkers, except less severe and less frequent BUT sans the Daemonic influence so they don't have an excuse for it. At least when the truth was exposed to the Chapter Master Caedis of the Blood Drinkers, he didn't try to cover it up, he tried to kill the High Chaplain for the duplicity.

They're a bunch of whiny babies that can't cop to their misdeeds I.E.-- Telling Dante, "if you snitch on us I'll personally see to the destruction the entire legacy of Sanguinius!"

So naturally Dante is half an inch away from Exterminatusing them off the face of the Imperium

Like most post-First Founding chapters, they have had almost no fluff until recently, with the release of the book "Dante" by Guy Haley. What few lore we have includes them being bullied by the Order of the Argent Shroud for no reason, which is rather lulzy considering the usual treatment of the Sisters next to the SM.

Devastation of Baal
Unlike almost every other Blood Angels-descended Chapter, the Angels Vermillion (officially) chose not to answer their parent Chapter's call to arms during the Devastation of Baal, presumably due to their isolative tendencies and Dante officially banning them from any such multi-Chapter meeting. Or maybe their new Chapter Master was just salty over nobody really liking them at all. Despite this, three companies of the Chapter broke away (against their orders) to help the Blood Angels at Baal.

Their arrival at Baal was initially... less than welcome, with Dante demanding what the hell they thought they were doing and Ordamael (Astorath's stand-in as High Chaplain) declaring them unwelcome, a view echoed by many of the other commanders present. The Angels Vermillion, however, managed to explain the reason for their presence: they all disagreed with their Chapter's practices (which are stated to have been becoming more extreme under their new Chaper Master, Moar), and disobeyed their Chapter Master's orders to leave Baal to its fate; no more than a single company survived to reach Baal, with the Tyranids destroying the rest at various stops along the way. The remainder asked to be placed on the vanguard of the battle, so that they could serve as best as they could and redeem their Chapter through their deaths.

After hearing their tale (despite his misgivings and the dissent of Ordamael), Dante agreed that they could fight with the Blood Angels and their successors in the Battle for Baal. The force itself was viciously mauled and may have been wiped out entirely, with Captain Fen (the leader of the Angels Vermillion detatchment) falling to the Red Thirst in the final hours of the battle and assisting Dante by distracting a Carnifex during the last, desperate charge of the Death Company.
One of the Second Founding successor chapters of the Blood Angels, the Angels Sanguine have a long and proud history in the Imperium, stretching back ten thousand years to the time of the Great Crusade. Indeed, the original Angels Sanguine were members of the Blood Angels Legion at the time, forming the new chapter when the Legion was broken down into thousand man Chapters. They were composed of those considered most glorious and faithful to the image of Sanguinius.

Like most successor chapters, they don't have much fluff written about them, GW leaving the door open on that so players can make their own history. Whether this will happen or not is unknown since they have a difficult colour scheme (dividing one half red, one half black) so unless you have a steady hand and want a challenge you will most likely choose an easier chapter to paint.

What is known about them in the fluff is that they never take their helmets off in public or even to other Space Marines, even from the Blood Angels. If they do forgo their armour, they wear deep hoods to obscure their faces. This has led to a number of rumours about them and what goes on in their chapter-monastery, which has some pretty deep catacombs it seems...

In one of the Blood Angels books, a group of them freak out at the thought of Mephiston looking into their brother's flesh with the warp to see if he was dead. What they were going to do if he said that he had, isn't brought up.

They have also done some secret missions in the Jericho Reach, and they are implied to be responsible for offing a group of Inquisitors who got too nosy for their own good...

Of course, given Chapter cultures and the planets they recruit from, it's likely this is little more than superstition from their homeworld. Especially using the Warp on a brother, that sounds like something which would freak out most people anyway. On the other hand, they might be zombies (or more likely stereotypical undead vampires hence the catacombs). Perhaps they found a way to purposely cause that and are building their numbers in the hopes of kicking humanity's enemies out of the Imperium or something...or...uh...something not so good.

The Angels of Redemption are a Second Founding chapter of the Dark Angels and behave and function in a manner very similar to their parent chapter, including have similar formations in the Deathwing and Ravenwing, keeping in touch with the other Unforgiven chapters, and sharing the Inner Circle and the hunt for the MEMBERS OF THE NINE TRAITOR LEGIONS!.

As a Second Founding chapter, they have a long and celebrated history just like the Dark Angels. Unfortunately, they were never taught by their parents the important life lessons of courtesy and keeping your promises. So where the Dark Angels and the other Unforgiven have managed to balance their duties to the Imperium with the hunt for the FILTHY TRAITORS WHICH ARE IN NO WAY RELATED TO THE DARK ANGELS in such a way as to not be noticed while they do it (mostly by only sending groups of elite units so the rest of the Chapter isn't tied down and by prioritizing the Imperium over their vendetta in the most extreme situations), the Angels of Redemption lose their minds whenever the merest whiff of HERETICS FROM THE TRAITOR LEGIONS comes in their direction and they drop whatever it is that they were doing and go chasing them like a dog running after a car.

Obviously to anyone who is not Unforgiven, this makes the Angels of Redemption seem a bit unreliable at best and some commanders have even gone so far as to decline aid from them rather than risk abandonment later on. It's unlikely Astartes care about their "offer" of assistance being refused. They'll stomp mudholes anyway.

On the tabletop, the Angels of Redemption behave exactly like Dark Angels but with a different colour scheme (though they have no unique special characters), but in the Deathwatch (RPG), Angels of Redemption characters make excellent trackers, since they are always on the lookout for signs of the Fallen.

In the RPG, there is even an incident described where the 1st and 2nd companies of the Angels of Redemption appeared in orbit above an Imperial Guard fortress world and demanded access to the dungeons. When they were refused entry they shot their way in and left three days later with several stasis caskets without saying a word. One wonders who the moron was who refused entry to an army of Space Marine Terminators. Especially since the Astartes out-rank them. Probably not so much of a moron considering the caskets are almost guaranteed to hold Fallen and the commander probably knew they were Dark Angel traitors and feared he was facing down a renegade chapter trying to cover its tracks. In that case it was badassery and incredible courage. Weird the Guard didn't win, though. I mean, they win against larger warbands than that with hordes of daemons on rocks in the middle of nowhere. This was a Fortress World so...yeah. Perhaps most of the Guardsmen just plain refused to fight because they thought the Commander was a traitor for ordering them to fight seemingly loyalist Marines?
The Angels Encarmine is a second founding successor chapter of the Blood Angels.

One of the most active chapters in the Imperium, the Angels Encarmine are famed for constantly campaigning and always looking for the next fight to throw themselves into it. This relentless attitude and their willingness to fight to protect the Emperor's people has bought them much fame and valour and casts a good light on the sons of Sanguinius.

You see, the Angels Encarmine's Chapter Master or "Castellan," Zargo, had no need for rest and found no comfort in sleep; constantly seeking opportunities to lead his brothers on campaign. In battle he was said to be relentless and commanded his brothers with great zeal and fury. To the ire of some, he had a penchant for getting rather irritated with those around him he deems coy, weak, or too hesitant to charge headlong into battle to slay mankind's foes. Although undoubtedly effective, this relentlessness and utter lust for battle has rubbed off on most of the chapter, and at times their bloodlust is met with awe and suspicion by those the Angel's Encarmine fight alongside.

As a result the Angels' ranks are rarely at full strength. They almost never stop to resupply, recruit novitiates, or generally catch their breath. During Zargo's leadership it was said by a Blood Angels archivist that no Space Marine Chapter was as active as the Angels Encarmine, which is fucking insane considering how thin they're stretched already. Still, they kick serious ass despite being outnumbered and outgunned most of the time, making them pretty awesome.

Although it might just be the bloodlust in the Angels Encarmine demanding blood, blood, BLOOD, it is whispered there is a darker reason. The flaws of the Red Thirst and the Black Rage manifest themselves differently from chapter to chapter and it could be this active energy is a result of the Encarmine handling it in their own way. Their Death Company is larger than most, evidence to the rumormongers that the chapter's days are numbered... as the rumors have stated for the last ten thousand years. If ten thousand years of a large Death Company, slow casualty replacement, and constant campaigning hasn't killed them off, they are fine.

Like most of the Blood Angels' successors Chapters, they pitched in to the big throwdown between Hive Fleet Leviathan and the Imperium at Baal. Though they put up a hell of a fight, they were horrifically mauled on both fronts of the battle: their orbiting fleet took heavy losses, while Castellan Zargo himself was killed in action (along with two-thirds of the entire chapter) defending the section of the Blood Angels' fortress-monastery known as the Arx Murus in the final days of the fighting. Their numbers were whittled down further as the Red Thirst asserted itself with a vengeance, leaving scarcely a company's worth of marines to rebuild their shattered chapter (though they received Primarines at the fighting's end, so there may still be hope for them yet)

Like most Blood Angel successors, they use an obscene amount of red in their armour. Seriously, they need to diversify their colour schemes a bit more. Or perhaps the Chapters of the Blood Angels still view themselves as a Legion? They might not operate as one like the <s>Dark Angels</s> some people, but they do act like it when fighting together.

They are also noteworthy for having their Death Company and Sanguinary Guard wear white instead of black or gold.

The Angels of Absolution are a Second Founding successor chapter of the Dark Angels. They are perhaps the successor with their heads on the straightest, since they realize that the sins of their forebears are not their own, and thus they don't have to seek forgiveness from the Emperor; though that doesn't mean they don't join in a merry game of 'Hunt the Fallen Angels' once in a while.

The Angels of Absolution are for the most part similar in temperament, outlook and everything else to their parent chapter. It is just on the one belief that they (quite sensibly) differ; they believe the actions of their forebears in combating the corrupted angels during the Fall cleansed their blood of the guilt and that their many acts in the Emperor's name since then have only confirmed that. Considering they are talking about 10,000 years here you can see where they are coming from. Just how many oceans of blood does the Emperor need to wash that much guilt off, damn?

They are also proof that, deep down, the Dark Angels have a sense of humour. In the 7th Edition Dark Angels codex, they are cited as having a "gallows humour" and are prone to "sardonic banter" and "bleak irony." Which means they are awesome.

They don't yet have the balls to tell their parent chapter to man up and stop being so emo about the whole Fallen thing. Or, maybe they did and the Dark Angels ignored them. Or maybe the Dark Angels mistook it for them taking the piss?

Unlike many successor chapters, they have a number of mentions of campaigns they have undertook, which has given them some colour and personality. Also unlike many successor chapters, their paint scheme is not particularly difficult to get to at least a "battle ready" standard, especially since the Contrast Paint method that GW is heavily pushing happens to use a bone white spray basecoat.

They show up in Forgeworld's Siege of Vraks campaign towards the end under orders from Azrael to capture Arkos the Faithless and regain the honour lost by their parent chapter earlier in the campaign. Interestingly, the fluff in the book shows that the Angels of Absolution have Sternguard Veteran squads, or, at the very least, 1st company veteran squads that can use Specialised Ammunition, which is something that the other Dark Angels successors do not have access to since they all have Deathwing equivalents. (The only way to represent this on the tabletop would be to use Codex: Space Marines.). This has been corrected in the updated Imperial Armour: Siege of Vraks book, where the picture above has had the numbers switched to represent the "First" squad of the "Fourth" company, rather than the "Fourth" squad of the "First" company, citing that as members of the Unforgiven, the 1st Company only ever takes the field in Terminator Armour. Maybe one of the writers read this page?

Recent Fluff
The most recent fluff involving the Angels of Absolution is given to us in Phil Kelly's mess of overlapping themes: War of Secrets. The Angels of Absolution are specifically targeted by the Fallen Angel Gohorael who took exception to the fact that they consider themselves "absolved" of the sins of the past, despite the fact the Fallen Angels are a very real thing.

Gohorael creates a psychic plague that causes its victims register as psykers until they puke up infectious white energy and die. It is contagious to normal humans and space marines alike, with the specific exception of Primaris Marines for undisclosed reasons. The Fallen Angel manages to corrupt the population of the world of Allhallow, the homeworld of the Angels of Absolution, leaving Interrogator Chaplain Zaeroph of Dark Angels who had been chasing him there in a quandary. He could not enact the Exterminatus protocol without first getting the permission of Supreme Grand Master Azrael, or arising the ire of the Inquisition, but he also cannot engage the planet directly without being seen assaulting the home of their Successor Chapter. But due to the threat of a Fallen Angel they simply HAVE to make landfall without declaring their intentions to their allies.

This is where Phil Kelly loses his faculties, as some Tau who were also chasing the source of the plague happen to be on Allhallow, and come to an accord with Zaeroph: They'll wipe out the plague on Allhallow, while the Dark Angels wipe out the infected humans on Saltire Vex, a world that the Tau had already claimed. Though deal is struck offscreen, the Tau are given a Psyoccule that allows them to detect psykers so they can eradicate the victims of plague on Allhallow; meaning the Dark Angels involved were guilty of the capital offense of aiding and abetting the xenos assault, that comprised a single Tau warrior defrosted for just this task (you heard me right, a single Tau warrior), against a Chapter homeworld, something that the Primaris contingent were extremely pissed off at, but were curiously content to let slide by the end of the story when Zaeroph decided to initiate them into a circle of their own and share some knowledge of the Hunt (again, without the consent of Azrael). The Dark Angels then leave the planet shortly after the Fallen Angel is captured (because that's what Dark Angels do), leaving the lone Tau warrior in his new stealth suit (again a single Tau warrior did this), and the Angels of Absolution to duke it out with each other. The Tau "super" warrior rips the marines apart, to the point that the only way that they are able to stop him is to order an orbital bombardment on their own home base.

What's worse is that Master-Castellan Moddren of the Angels of Absolution is left standing at the end of the battle and finds the Psyoccule in the empty battlesuit of the Tau warrior (he got away somehow), and the Dark Angels had only gone and forgotten to file the serial numbers off!! leaving Moddren in no doubt who had facilitated the assault on his world, and none the wiser that a Fallen Angel was in his own back yard.

We are left to believe that Chaplain Zaeroph is either a monumental idiot or has gone rogue because of his lack of collaboration with the Inner Circle's chain of command: not only has he pissed on Azrael's shoes, but if he had contacted Moddren first, then the Angels of Absolution might have assisted in the Hunt, as is their right as members of the Unforgiven and then been left to clean up their own mess of the infection. This sets the Angels of Absolution with a collision course with their parent chapter at some point. Not to mention the Angels of Absolution would have certainly purged the crap out of their world's infection post-haste. The idea that a single Tau could do a better job than a Chapter of Astartes is ridiculous; as much as people really despise the massive volume of self indulgent Marine wank that is out there, this... was a bit too much, even for those who are desperate for a Xenos win once in awhile. Besides that, the First Legion doesn't do their dicking to their member Chapters. So, this fluff all flies in the face of everything established about the Legion, it's behaviors to outsiders and insiders, and its operating practices.

The story has a real hate boner for anything regarding the older marines, and an unabashed love for all things Primaries, and takes every opportunity to point out how the brand new marines are better in every single way possible.

Relics & Honours
As is befiting of a chapter whose history can be traced all the way back to the Apocrypha of Davio, the Angels of Absolution have a great number of relics. Redemption's Lament was a master-crafted, sanctified power sword. It was handed over to the Deathwatch around the same time that the chapter stopped referring to themselves as "Unforgiven"; although they are still are a full fledged member of the Unforgiven as a whole, the only real difference is that they feel that they have already gained absolution. The battle-brother who left it behind said: "its fate no longer dwelt with its brethren".

However, the blade completely FREAKS OUT the Angels of Absolution, subtly eroding their sanity with its presence, which is particularly interesting as per the rules, since the Angels of Absolution don't break down the same way that Dark Angels and other successors do. Instead they gain corruption if they fail to deal with their ever-increasing level of insanity, essentially becoming closer to renegades themselves. So it's clear that the blade is a reminder to members of the chapter of something particularly bad... perhaps they've been a bit premature about absolving themselves of their guilt?
The White Scars (although to themselves, they are named the "Horde of Jaghatai") are a Chapter of Space Marines that are basically Mongols in Power Armor and on bikes, in contrast to the Space Vikings of the Space Wolves, Space Vampires of the Blood Angels, and the (kind of) space ancient Egyptians of the Thousand Sons. Their Primarch is known as Jaghatai Khan. Their requisite one-trick-pony is hit-and-run attacks, which they do on those sweet bikes of theirs. They are specifically a mixture of Mongols and Tatars, with very strong Chinese influence (think Yuan dynasty) and a few sparingly-used sprinkles of Japan. Due largely to Chris Wraight's and the Black Library cover artists' attempts to be respectful to these cultures, this leaves them surprisingly aesthetically diverse - the White Scars recruit from a collection of heterogenous tribes rather than a single unified culture, meaning their depicted hairstyles and armour customisations can come from pretty much anywhere in and any historical period of East Asia in general.

Also, their bikes (mounts?) don't give a fuck about difficult terrain (Bitch, I'm a bike!).

In the meta, they've probably benefited the most from the Horus Heresy, with Chris Wraight finally building them beyond the very basics of their fluff and keeping them well away from the derpery which has often afflicted other Legions. Even their cameos in other Legions' stories have been badass.

This is their theme song.

They now have an officially released Codex Supplement for 8e.

History
In the Unification Wars, the Vth legion served as the eyes and ears of the unifiers. They were the scouts of big E, who sought out anyone who dared oppose Him. They traveled through the devastated landscape of Terra, often in small groups of a few dozen, looking for any enemies or foes in the wasteland. When the unification of Terra ended, the Emperor split the Vth legion into pioneer companies of several hundred marines to scout the frontier. These pioneer companies were all related by gene seed, but were otherwise independent divisions. The pioneer companies would always travel far ahead of the main expeditions, following warp currents to places unknown.

This behavior was also the origin of the legion's preference for hit and run tactics. Since the pioneer companies were almost always fighting against foes that outnumbered them, it was pretty much the only option for them. They would perform raids and surprise attacks on the enemy, learning the strategies and tactics of the enemy, and then pass on what they learned to other expedition. Though some like Horus appreciated them, (he was especially fond of the pioneer company that discovered his homeworld, and was amused that the captain reported that "it was a nest of serpents coiling in the dark that we would be better to destroy") the Vth legion's battles were seldom given attention, though none of the "legion" were especially upset over this, and they kept to themselves anyway.

Finally, Jaghatai was found (ironically, by the Luna Wolves instead of the pioneer companies). Unifying his "legion" was not an easy task, as the pioneer companies had fought indepedently for so long that even other members of the Vth were seen as outsiders. When all the legionnaires had come to Chogoris (this process took nearly a decade), the Khan made all present undergo a Chogorian ritual, which involved first scarification, and then choosing a new name. To further solidify the bonds between members, Jaghatai and his men participated in the age old Spehss Mehreen bonding exercise of killing Orks. The Khan deployed his men such that the initiated Chogorians would fight alongside the Terrans, and that the warriors would have to rely on others to defeat the foes. A tenth of the legion died in the battle, but the remaining came out as a unified legion for perhaps the first time in their history.

Horus Heresy
When Horus flipped out and started having his little tantrum, the White Scars were on the far side of nowhere from the rest of the Imperium, having a grand old time killing Orks on Chondax. Because of this, they had no idea what was going on until they started to receive contradictory messages from both sides. Horus sent them a message claiming that the Space Wolves had turned traitor and fragged Prospero, while Rogal Dorn told them that Horus was the traitor and recalled them to Terra. Just to make things more complicated, the Alpha Legion showed up unexpectedly and set up a blockade of the Chondax system, and then they also received a distress call from the Wolves, who were getting pummeled by the Alpha Legion at the Alaxxes Nebula. Jaghatai considered all this, then decided to go figure out what was going on for himself. The Scars blew past the Alpha Legion fleet with their superior speed, told the Wolves to have a nice winter, and took off for Prospero. There, the Khan discovered a shard of Magnus that had been left behind after the furries' outing. The shard explained that both sides were correct, from a certain point of view: Russ and the Wolves had indeed blown Prospero to hell, but Magnus had sort of brought it on himself, and Horus and his allies were the real traitors. At this point, Mortarion turned up with a Death Guard fleet, hoping to recruit Jaghatai for Team Horus. The Khan laughed in his face, pointed out that Morty had chosen the side which stood for everything he hated, and dueled him for a while.

While all this was going on, some of the Terran White Scars were trying to force the legion to declare for Horus (ironic as in the traitor legions the loyalists were mostly the Terrans); they almost succeeded, but one of the legion's mortal officers was able to teleport the Khan back up to his flagship. He revealed what he'd learned to the Scars, and the pro-Horus faction surrendered. Some were executed, while the rest were formed into suicide squads called the Sagyar Mazan and sent out to kill traitors until they died themselves. The Khan opted to go fight a guerrilla war against the Traitor Legions, though not before swearing that he would return to Terra when needed. The Scars actually did a fairly good job of tying up Horus' forces for a while, but after four years of relentless attritional warfare, they realized it was time to head for Terra before they were cut off and destroyed. The legion rallied at the Catallus Warp Rift, where they found a Webway portal controlled by a device called the Dark Glass. While they were studying the Dark Glass, the Death Guard caught up with them, once again led by Mortarion, who was starting to take things personally. In the end, though Jaghatai wished to make a last stand against the traitors, his Chief Stormseer Yesugei used the Dark Glass to open a Webway portal to Terra, and Jaghatai and the legion took their chance. The last of the Sagyar Mazan squads remained behind to delay the Death Guard, and nearly got Mortarion killed on the Khan's flagship by holding him there until the ship's reactor exploded.

The Scars were one of the three loyalist legions that fought in the Siege of Terra, alongside the Imperial Fists and the Blood Angels. We don't know much about their role in the battle yet, except that they recaptured an important spaceport so that loyalist reinforcements could be brought in, and that the Khan apparently spent at least part of the siege commanding his legion from atop a Razorback.

Memes aside, the White Scars didn't like being at the Siege much, since sitting behind the Palace walls while the traitors banged away at them with big guns ran counter to their entire tactical philosophy of GOTTA GO FAST. During the opening stages of the Siege, the Khan took some of the legion to go defend the civilian populace of Terra from the predations of the Emperor's Children and the Night Lords. Later on, they launched repeated sorties beyond the walls to delay and harass the advancing traitor forces. They also held the Colossi, a key portion of the Palace defenses, during Dorn's gambit at the Saturnine Wall. Their biggest moment in the Siege was their counterattack on traitor forces at the Lion's Gate Spaceport. The attack was led by Jaghatai Khan himself, who dueled and banished his daemon primarch brother Mortarion through decapitation. The victory came at the cost of the Khan's life, but his body was rescued and sent to Malcador, so he can eventually get lost in the webway.

M41
When the Great Rift opened near Chogoris, the Red Corsairs invaded the sector, leaving behind corruption and is currently entrenched in the sector. The White Scars fought off the Red Corsairs, several Warbands, and daemons beside the united tribals. That's right, the White Scars pretty much on their own beat back a force that could be capable of challenging Abbadon's own Black Legion and his allied Warbands. The current chapter master Jubal was injured but still leads from the infirmary. He was tortured beyond the Imperium's ability to repair but remains sane, keen, and awake. He now leads the Chapter remotely, seeing through outriders and giving orders on a segmentum scale. If anything, his skills have increased as he now can devote his attention fully to commanding his men and leaving the rest to his subordinates. Not to mention whatever devices they probably hooked his brain up to. I mean, it would make sense. Obliterated the Death Guard that was on Dortwyr with Inquisitor Greyfax.

Organization
They are known for their sweet mustaches and the Scars they make on their faces upon induction into the Chapter. They are also known for the Scars they make on the enemies of the Emprah's faces after induction into the Chapter. Which is introduced into the chapter after Jaghatai was reunited with the 5th Legion, (i.e. his legion) as he had recently united the fierce tribes of the Talksar tribesmen. Never mind that many Talskar did join the legion due to their loyalty to Jaghatai. Also, they only recruit from Jaghatai's adopted homeworld: Mundus Planus (known as Chogoris to the natives). Up until the Horus Heresy, there was a mix of Terran and Chogorian legionaries, and quite likely many legionaries from other diverse planets across galaxy prior to their reunion with Jaghatai.

The White Scars are led by a Great Khan and several Brotherhoods' (Company) Khans (Captains). They abhor Dreadnoughts as they find it a distasteful treatment for their fellow warriors though they do allow it. And of course the whole biker thing makes slower moving tanks (stripped down to go faster) and troops (like Devastators) rare; in their place they have a large amount of drop pods, Land Speeders and Rhinos and also aerial vehicles like Storm Talons, Nephilim Jetfighters. Plus bikes, lots and lots of bikes. Space bikes.

They have an incredibly deep, abiding rivalry with the Raven Guard because of their conflicting general tactical doctrines - according to Deathwatch, a failure to cooperate in an old war campaign destroyed any chances of fostering ties they might've had. While the Raven Guard prefers to lie in wait and plan out their attacks down to the letter to ensure the most efficient results are achieved when they finally start their attacks, the White Scars pretty much does the opposite and just rush in chainswords drawn, using their fast-attack specialty to overwhelm their opponents with sheer speed and force. Despite the animosity, the two forces have fought alongside one another on multiple occasions, and it's worth noting it's more of a competitive rivalry in any case. Plus lately the Ravens rode shotgun on a Great Hunt, which made for a great bonding exercise.

Despite their savage image, much like their main inspiration, they're actually one of the most cultured legions (and by far one of the best-groomed) in the current Imperium, with aspirants having to take up pursuits like poetry, painting and calligraphy (often about their battles), and wearing silks in their downtime. As a result, they don't like hanging around with the mad drunk Vikings who treat the whole barbarian thing like a badge of honour. The only cultural traits they share are hunting (though it's hinted at that the Scars are more into falconry) and really enjoying their job, frequently admonishing recruits to laugh and smile when fighting. Hey, if you can channel the myriad of emotions, good, bad, and ugly the battlefield brings into sheer thrill then you've found the only glory (and perhaps psychopathy) there is in war. Unfortunately, they don't hang out with anyone apart from their successors, so the rest of the Imperium has kept this misconception for millennia. Their Primarch and Legion were also perhaps the only ones besides Guilliman and Lion to realize that they are, in fact, living weapons and not really more than that. Unlike certain losers who realized this and went all grimderp, the White Scars embraced this and were totally fine with. It was their purpose, simple as that. Everyone likes knowing their purpose (except people who spent centuries deluding themselves).

They used to get on well with the Luna Wolves - particularly the Terran portion of the Legion, many of whose members had aspired to join the other Legion only to find themselves seconded to the Scars (the Scars seem to have ranked just below the Space Wolves and World Eaters as the Legion aspirants most dreaded being assigned to, though this might have been due to the indignity of being part of a Legion of strange outriders who earned little renown while flying in the face of the glorious military doctrines aspirants were raised on as opposed to being part of a brutal close-quarters assignment likely to end in death). As a result of this, the Terran Khans tended to favour a mix of White Scars and Luna Wolves organisation and doctrine, to the point that they resented Jaghatai's leadership for being "flighty" compared to Horus' fully committed, crushing attacks. Their relationship with the sons of Horus brought the Warrior Lodges into the White Scars. This was fairly harmless at first, and might have helped bring the Terran and Chogorian Astartes together in time.

But then the Horus Heresy happened. The Lodge members were duped into rebelling against their Primarch and trying to force the Scars into declaring for Horus. They were kept in the dark about the whole Chaos and rebellion thing - as far as they were aware the only act of rebellion was the Space Wolves' smashing the Thousand Sons. Unlike the <s>Fallen</s> :+++FOUL TRAITORS COMPLETELY UNRELATED TO THE FIRST LEGION+++, these traitors were overwhelmed, eventually realized Horus was messing with some seriously fucked up shit and surrendered to the loyalists. Ironically, it was a Terran-born Noyan-Khan who stood up to the uprising, against one of the Khagan's oldest comrades who fought by his side even before becoming a Space Marine. Jaghatai executed the ringleaders and assigned all others to the Sagyar Mazan, where they performed suicide missions in Zone Mortalis missions to redeem themselves.

The Chogorian portion of the legion, on the other hand, used to be big bros with the Thousand Sons, having Chogorian artistic culture colliding perfectly with the Prosperian knowledge-seeking and nerdity, not to mention the high positions psykers had in both legions. The fact that the Space Furries (though they were manipulated) pretty much forced TS into turning to Chaos does not play well with Scars even to this day, which stacks with their dislike of Wolves' "barbarian and proud of it" shtick (which is ironic considering modern-day Mongolia has a drinking culture that makes Russians look like sissy lightweights).

On the subject of the nerds who wear blue better than the Ultramarines, the White Scars also created a Librarius and ignored the Edict of Nikaea. Their Librarians, who are also their Chaplains, are known as Stormseers; a call back to the title of the shamans of Jaghatai's tribe and are also responsible for recruitment. They also have another Chaplaincy, the Head Chaplaincy, dedicated to the collection of heads, they do supposedly collect enemy skulls from the Hunt.

One might imagine the Imperium being on high alert against the Scars, seeing as only two legions they ever got along with went traitor, but surprisingly it's not the case. May have something to do with them being the heroes of the Siege of Terra.

Their current Chapter Master, or rather, 'Great Khan' is Jubal Khan, whose namesake once kicked Sigismund in the face. Legends are told of his sweet mustache across the entire length and breadth of the Imperium, which the mustache also spans. The Khan's bodyguard, the Keshig, are the only White Scars known to use Terminator Armour - presumably they wait until he's stuck in and teleport down onto the field, since it's hard to imagine Jubal letting things as insignificant as 'common sense' or 'letting your bodyguards do their job' get in the way of charging the enemy at mach 1.5.

They probably get along well with the Attilan Rough Riders. If they'd been the first to encounter the Interex instead of the Luna Wolves, the two factions would have probably got along pretty well except for the Interex's implied issues about psykers. Also, the Scars would've dug that cyber-centaur armour.

Notable Members
*Jaghatai Khan: Primarch of the White Scars, Master of the Ice-Blue Heavens, the Warhawk of Chogoris, and total speed demon. Believed that conquering an empire was much more fun than ruling it and disagreed with the Emperor about basically everything, though that didn't stop him being loyal to the Imperium - unlike pretty much every other primarch, ol' Jaggy was in it out of principle (and the looming threat of extermination) and not a fat lot else. Kicked tons of ass in the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy, almost died in the Siege of Terra, and later disappeared into the Webway while hunting some Dark Eldar dicks who'd been raiding Chogoris. Many like to assume that he's still tear-assing through the Webway, possibly with a harem of Wyches in tow.
*Targutai Yesugei: Chief Stormseer of the White Scars during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy and probably Jaghatai's best friend. Spoke in defense of the Librarius at Nikaea, but it didn't help much because he wasn't fluent in Gothic, so he came off like a stupid hick to the snooty Imperials. Despite this, he went on being bro-tier and using his psyker powers to aid his legion during the Heresy. Sacrificed himself in a heroic and tear-jerking fashion to help the White Scars get back to Terra in time for the Siege.
*Qin Xa: Master of the Keshig and in the minority of White Scars who grew to like Terminator armor. Like Targutai, one of Jaghatai's best friends and strong right hand, both of them fighting by his side even before the Emperor's arrival on Chogoris. While utterly loyal and generally stoic and composed, he also often questioned or challenged the Khagan's decisions to see if they held up, and encouraged his subordinates to do the same. Killed by Eidolon at the Kalium Gate while armored like Jaghatai to distract the Emperor's Children from the Scars' true attempt to return to Terra.
*Tsolmon Khan: Veteran member of the White Scars who was born on Terra and served in the legion prior to Jaghatai's rediscovery. He wholeheartedly embraced Chogorian culture and the Khagan's reforms and became a pillar of the legion prior to the Heresy. When the Alpha Legion showed up to ruin the Scars' day at Chondax, Tsolmon was on the ground on some planet called Byfrust with his brotherhood and some Sisters of Silence who happened to be there. They held the Alphas off until the XX Legion got bored and orbitally bombarded the place, but Tsolmon and his guys and some of the Sisters were able to evacuate in time. He recovered the relics and wargear of a Knight-Centura who'd died fighting alongside him and brought them back to the other Sisters, also testifying as to her bravery. In response, the matriarchs of the Order decided to award him his very own <s>harem</s> personal guard of Silent Sisters, an honour which he apparently bore with great humility.
*Shiban Khan: Khan of the Brotherhood of the Storm during the Great Crusade. Also known as Tachseer, or the Restorer. Was pretty laid back and bro-tier up until he got blown up during the White Scars' mini-civil war at the beginning of the Heresy and rebuilt into an angry mass of scars and augmetics. He felt shackled by his artificial limbs and was pissed at the Scars who'd declared for Horus, blaming them for his injuries, especially his former friend Torghun Khan. Ironically, his augmetic rebuild saved his life during the Siege of Terra when his shuttle was shot down and bounced off the Eternity Wall; he shrugged it off and hiked back to friendly lines, picking up a baby along the way so he could do a reenactment of Lone Wolf and Cub. May have become the first chapter master of the Storm Lords after the Siege of Terra.
*Torghun Khan: Terran-born Astartes, formerly Haren Svensellen of Scandinavia, who just missed being selected to join the XVI Legion and was reassigned to the V Legion. He tried his hardest to fit in and admittedly came to realize and respect that they actually knew their shit, but was always frustrated by the Scars' freewheeling nature as compared to the rigid discipline of the Luna Wolves. Notably, while his Chogorian brothers were blade-dancing with tulwars and guandaos, he preferred a distinctly Terran fighting style of wielding a Terranic greatsword with precision and control; in a Legion with the power of Genghis Khan and anime on their side, he was the one character who used Western-style fighting. Struck up an unlikely brotherhood with Shiban Khan despite their differing tactics, which would be tragically sundered. He was part of the faction that tried to declare for Horus at the beginning of the Heresy. Torghun did this with the best of intentions, seeking a place to belong and genuinely buying Horus' half-truths which suggested that siding with him against the renegade Russ was necessary to preserve the Imperium, though like many of his Terran brothers, he also thought that if the Scars were pushed into the Warmaster's camp they could finally be more like the 'no backwards step' Legion they'd always wanted to be a part of. When that backfired, he was assigned to the Sagyar Mazan suicide squads, even becoming a command figure they looked up to, and finally found redemption in death by fighting to delay Mortarion on the bridge of Jaghatai's flagship as the rest of the legion retreated to Terra. He died laughing, having become a true son of Jaghatai.
*Jubal Khan (30k): First Master of the Hunt, Lord of Summer Lightning and the Death That Comes With Laughter. If Qin Xa was the methodical, composed Yin side of the Legion, he was the precise, aggressive Yang side. Was initially a Terran-born recruit, but took to Jaghatai's cultural and tactical changes exceptionally well like Tsolmon Khan, embodying their 'laughing warrior-scholar' archetype. Noted for being one of the few members of the insular V Legion who was actually well-known by other Legions and military detachments in the Great Crusade. Fierce and cunning, he put up a good fight against Sigismund (in a friendly bout) and Abaddon (to the death) in two separate duels, but ultimately lost in both. However, his unorthodox and wild fighting style gave them fierce resistance, and he nearly posthumously killed the future Despoiler with a Caestus Assault Ram after their zero-gravity duel.
*Ilya Ravallion: Mortal Army officer who was assigned to the Scars during the Crusade to help them improve their logistical infrastructure. She quickly discovered that the Khagan couldn't give less of a shit about making sure his legion was doing things by the Imperium's book, but still managed to earn the Scars' respect and even teach them a few things. They gave her the title of "szu", or "sage", and she was more or less an honorary White Scar by the end of the Heresy. Jaghatai respected and liked her enough to play Go with her and ensure she had one of his Marines bodyguarding her at all times.
*Jubal Khan (40k): Current Chapter Master of the White Scars. Shares his name with Jubal Khan from the Crusade and is generally overshadowed by Kor'sarro these days. Suffered grievous injuries fighting off the Red Corsairs and got stuck in a life-support device, so he can't ride into battle personally. However, he still leads the Chapter remotely, and if anything, his mind has only gotten sharper.
*Kor'sarro Khan: Captain of the 3rd Company and Master of the Hunt. The archetypal White Scar who believes in going fast and having fun with your job, he's also pretty bro-tier in his attempts to play nice with other Chapters, especially the Raven Guard despite their mutual antagonism. Cut off Doomrider's head and might be tsundere for Shadowsun. Upgraded to Primaris with the advent of 8th edition but can no longer ride a bike for some reason.

Daily Rituals of a White Scar
04:00 - Rousing from slumber. The White Scars get up from their bikes.

04:10 - Grooming. White Scars tend to their mustaches and long, flowing hair.

05:00 - Morning Prayer. Those with mustaches pray to the God-Emperor for the strength to defeat their enemies. Those without pray for mustaches

06:00 - Morning Firing Rites. White Scars practice with their bike-mounted weaponry.

07:00 - Battle Practice. White Scars practice beheading a target with a single stroke of their swords during a 100 mph driveby.

12:00 - Midday Prayer. White Scars pray for their bikes to perform well in the coming afternoon. Those without fabulous mustaches might pray more desperately for mustaches.

13:00 - Midday Meal. White Scars consume the various meats they had put under their saddles during the morning exercises. Meal is now properly cooked from the heat of the bike, the metallic, promethium-like flavor is said to add to the taste. Milk mixed with promethium from their bikes is consumed as well.

13:15 - Tactical Indoctrination. White Scars are informed on which foes are the latest to elude the Chapter.

15:00 - Battle Practice. White Scars practice beheading a target with a single stroke while hanging upside down from a Land Speeder.

20:00 - Evening Prayer. White Scars give thanks to the Emperor for another productive day. The younger battle brothers fervently praise the emperor when they find stubble on their faces.

21:00 - Evening Meal. A feast is provided by the Chapter serfs, consisting mostly of horse meat and Har Airag (fermented horse milk). Partaking in drunken throat singing is encouraged -- Jaghatai Khaani Magtaal (A Song of Praise for Jaghatai Khaan) is a particular favourite.

21:45 - Night Firing Exercises. The White Scars practice formations in the dark. Any marine who crashes into another is disciplined.

23:00 - Maintenance Rituals. White Scars spend time maintaining and customizing their bikes.

23:45 - Free Time. White Scars prefer to spend this time on things like poetry (about their battles), painting (their battles) and calligraphy (writing about their battles). Others opt for more time on the bike

00:00 - Rest Period. White Scars return to (or park) their bikes and sleep on them.

The Ultramarines (More commonly known as Ultrasmurfs) are a chapter of Space Marines, probably the most famous and well-known and mincy (both within the Warhammer 40,000 universe and without). Games Workshop considers the Ultramarines their chapter of choice, and the Ultramarines represent the standard upon which most other Space Marine chapters are based but strive to be different from as they are so mincy. Why Games Workshop would want a Space Marine chapter whose symbol is a <s>toilet seat</s> <s>repulsive reverse vagina</s> <s>upside down Omega</s> <S>upsilon</S> <s>horseshoe</s> International Phonetic Alphabet transcription for "uhh..." (℧) as their go-to chapter is beyond us. They have an easily recognizable blue-with-gold-trim colour scheme that the Thousand Sons decided to rip off post-heresy (after the Newcrons ripped off their Egyptian motif.) Of course technically that's only the second company, but who ever heard of an Ultramarine player not painting his army blue and gold? The blue colouration, coupled with the small size of the minis, has lead them to be nicknamed "Smurfs" by <s>some</s> everyone. It's a very, very old joke however, and it was never particularly funny even when the boys in blue were at their most insufferably Wardian. Rick Priestley was originally inspired to promote the Ultramarines heavily in publications of White Dwarf after a dream he had whilst staying around a friends house in which he claims the miniatures began speaking to him, this part allegedly had a role in his eventual dismissal from Games Workshop in 2010.

A squad of Tactical Marines are the protagonists of the 40k-based CGI movie surprisingly titled "Ultramarines". It's not bad per se (Dan Abnett did some of the writing, although the fact that it was only "some" shows) but could have been better.

Also, their pre-Heresy culture and appearance was basically the Romanized gothic tribes from near the end of the Roman Empire. So, they still had their manly barbarian on combined with strict discipline and coordination. Currently, though, they’re just straight up Roman. Interestingly, the Space Wolves back then were basically the pre-Romanized tribes.

Overview
The Ultramarines are perhaps the closest to what many would consider a 'modern' military among the Adeptus Astartes. Strategy, planning and the minimization of casualties is the basis of any Ultramarine battle-plan and their central concept is that of a well drilled, immaculate army of soldiers who execute their duty with professionalism and competence. "Information is victory" is essentially the Ultramarine way, more so than most other Chapters. Though they are much more relaxed with regards to discipline than the Forge World's favoured, or those other guys. Even before they had reunited with their Primarch, it had been noted that the XIIIth Legion (then called the War Born) was strongly inclined towards the adoption of carefully thought out battle plans, an established chain of command, and an aversion to inflicting collateral damage. These tendencies were intensified further by their extensive study and practice of the Codex Astartes, which covers a very broad range of battlefield situations and doctrines to live by. Thanks to each and every one of them training and living by it, their companies operate like a smoothly functioning combat machine with every unit functionally interlocking with every other. However, as much as this by-the-book discipline was their strength, it is often also, like the real-life ancient Roman Legions, their weakness, since the few situations that the Codex Astartes did not prepare them for tended to catch them flat-footed, lacking the flexibility to properly respond. More accurately, no Marine knows the whole Codex as it is too vast for even their minds. Each learns different parts of it. This means that while the whole Codex can be used for any situation, commanders don’t have all the pieces to the puzzle. The initial Tyranid invasion and the Damnos incident exemplify such situations, where the unconventional nature of their enemy nearly led to their defeat. It doesn't matter how smoothly your forces function if you don't actually have a way to win the battle.

That being said, they are extremely good at adapting to a threat once the initial shock has passed. In the aftermath of their near-defeat to the Tyranids, the Chapter would go on to crush Hive Fleet Kraken as a coherent invasion force as well as create an entire unit dedicated to fighting this particular threat (Almost as if they are a chapter that is protected by a mystical armour), called the Tyrannic War Veterans. These specialists would become highly sought after by the Deathwatch due to their experience and knowledge and was even augmented by survivors from other Chapters that suffered the wrath of the Tyranids. During the Horus Heresy, an entire force of 1000 Ultramarines was decimated the initial Night Lord of invasion of Sotha. Despite being caught off guard at first due to their unfamiliarity with the Night Lord's unconventional tactics, they began to adapt fast to their enemy's fighting style and by the end of the battle, achieved a near 20-1 kill ratio over their traitorous cousins. Although they may be weak to a new enemy or new tactics, they have a superb reactivity once they have the information they need.

They’re not warriors or knights, but soldiers; a professional fighting force dedicated to defending the 500 Worlds of Ultramar and serving the interests of the larger Imperium beyond. A standing army that is the byproduct of a prosperous Star Empire to which they owe their existence. This is seen in their combat doctrine. They don’t have any specializations themselves because they are supposed to adapt to whatever situation presents itself and act accordingly. They are a fluid and malleable fighting force that is supposed to assess the situation, gain every scrap of intelligence/battle data they can, and then change themselves into whatever is required to get the job done; be it a blunt hammer or a precision blade. That being said, they do still have particular units which specialize at one thing or another. For instance, while the average Ultramarine will probably lose a duel to an average Dark Angel, the Invictus Suzerians can hold their own against even the best of the Lion's sons. By that same token however, a Suzerian won't out-snipe a Raven Guard Mor'Deythan. If not for being a bit too hard into the "honor and glory" thing, and being a bit too by-the-book, they would basically be Reasonable Marines.

The Primarch of the Ultramarines is Roboute Guilliman (aka Robot Girlyman and about a thousand other highly appropriate names: Big Bobby G, Rowboat Gillman, The BIG RG, Rawbutt Girlyman , The Great Papa Smurf, God-Emperor of smurfs Ex. Ex.) and it was he who wrote the (in?)famous Codex Astartes after the events of the Daddy Issue Invasion, prescribing each Space Marine chapter to a mere thousand warriors to ensure that no one man would ever command the loyalty of an entire Space Marine legion again. At least, that was the plan, but Roboute Guilliman himself never got to see it come to light, as he was mortally wounded by a poisonous attack from his bro, the Traitor Primarch Fulgrim, and he had been kept in stasis by the Ultramarines for thousands of years, only being revived through the actions of Archmagos Cawl and the Ynnari ten thousand years later (Working with Xenos? HERESY!).

The Ultramarines base their ideals upon the teachings of super-Ultra Smurf daddy, who ended up on a neo-Roman planet and soon adopted their way of thinking. They believe in individual strength to strengthen the whole (and not for the betterment of one self), and in following the rules, however strict they might be. This way, order is maintained in all things. Courage is, naturally, also a big thing to them, since it goes with the idea of the individual working to better the whole. All this means that the Ultramarines are very, very good at doing their job, as long as they are prepared for it and works alongside the rest of their Chapter, but tend to be rather stumped when a situation which their planning and reasoning can't immediately deal with, comes up. When such situations do occur, such as the First Tyrannic War, they tend to have to take a bit of time to adapt. Being an army of mini-Guillimans, an elucidating example of their tendencies can be gleaned from a set of wargames that Guilliman had with Corax back in the halcyon days. Corax, who was one of the Imperium's best tacticians, beat Guilliman in three battlefield scenarios in which he outmaneuvered Guilliman through the use of Moritats and ad-hoc civilian saboteur squads. Guilliman, who initially hadn't considered the use of either unit due to them being so unorthodox, caught on to their usefulness after the three defeats. Once he'd gotten Corax's number, Corax never beat him again. Corax himself said of the games: "I won battles against him, but never a war." That's basically the Ultramarines in a nutshell; you may win some battles against them with unorthodox tactics and imagination. But odds are they are going to figure you out, and once they do, you are in a lot of trouble.

The Ultramarines are also notorious for disregarding much of the wider Imperium in favour of their own worlds, the famed 500 Worlds of Ultramar. This has earned them much hate from in-universe factions, who don't like how they essentially go "Screw you guys, we'll just make our own, sort of working empire! With blackjack! And hookers!"; One of Fulgrim's iterators, who had the ear of powerful members of Terran court, once said that "The Lord of Ultramar sees little else besides the primacy of his own culture.", and also Malcador and the Emperor were not surprised when Guilliman chose to defend his 500 worlds rather than get his hands dirty with the Horus Heresy. Which is, of course, the complete opposite of Ultramar’s “protect the greater whole” philosophy, but GW has always been stupid like that. Many elegen/tg/entlemen dislike this as well, since it sort of makes the Ultries seem they know better than the rest of the Imperium, while still being lauded as being some of the most honourable Chapters in the entire galaxy.

In the Ultramarines' defense however, they're probably the most successful space marine chapter in the galaxy, considering that they defend and maintain hundreds of worlds, and those worlds are some of the most prosperous, meritocratic worlds in the entire Imperium. Plus, the Ultramarines have an affinity with the common people, as they believe that it's their sworn duty to protect the innocent, like the Salamanders but not quite to the same degree. Even with their duties in Ultramar, the Chapter still sends warriors out into the wider galaxy, making significant contributions at Armageddon and at Cadia during the 13th black crusade. That said, their propensity to focus on defending Ultramar (alongside other Chapters in or near Ultramar) could also be the simple pragmatism of recognizing that a thousand (or a few thousand with the nearby Chapters considered) Marines cannot really do much more than that without heavily diluting their force projection. And besides, Guilliman was getting involved with the Horus Heresy until Ultramar got cut off by the Ruinstorm. Plus on top of all that, most of the Imperium sucks because of the choices of the people running the show. There's no reason most of the rest of the Imperium's worlds couldn't implement the sorts of policy decisions that make Ultramar as prosperous as it is; it's not as though Ultramar keeps any of it secret. Since they choose not to, the Ultramarines' attitude is may essentially just be "ok look, when the rest of you want to stop being retarded, you let us know. We've got more than enough work to do as it is, so until then, we'll be over here not dealing with your shit."

All of the other Space Marine legions save one (or maybe two, depending on how you look at it, maybe three if you count anger and most likely four when thinking about it) adopted the Codex and split up into multitudes of smaller chapters, and most Space Marine chapters today follow the practices found within it, although some like the Space Wolves and the Black Templars have refrained from implementing it. This is because, generally speaking, it really is a very good general reference for tactical and strategic planning; Guilliman's strategic capabilities were, after all, only rivaled by Dorn and Horus in the entire Imperium. However, the Ultramarines and more than a few of their Successor Chapters are very rigid in their compliance to it. Where most other Chapters like the Imperial Fists and Raven Guard looks to it for guidance when encountering unfamiliar situations, the Ultramarines see the Codex as a sort of "holy book" and follow its instructions to the letter. Ironically, Guilliman himself believed this to be misguided and noted that the Codex was never meant to replace the ability to act on one's own judgments. But Irony is a strong force in 40K universe.

The Ultramarines are also the base source of about 80% of the Geneseed for new Space Marine chapters, mainly for two reasons, and totally not because GW wants to push vanilla marines as much as possible to new players. The first in-universe reason is that, during all times of the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy, the Ultramarines were by far the largest Legion (numbering around 250-300.000 Marines) and it made the split into a multitude of chapters, many of which are still around today, much easier on them than on certain other chapters. This was further compounded by the fact that the Ultramarines were largely intact after the Heresy, whereas many of the other Legions, smaller even to begin with, had been absolutely decimated. The Salamanders, Raven Guard, and Iron Hands had all nearly ceased to exist after the Dropsite Massacre, and the Imperial Fists, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, and White Scars had all been similarly assblasted either right before, or during, the Siege of Terra. The only two Legions that were still kicking about in relatively large numbers after the Heresy were the Dark Angels and the Ultramarines, as neither Legion had been involved in either event. The Dark Angels however, then suffered a catastrophe when the Legion returned to Caliban. With Luthor's betrayal of the Lion and the destruction of their homeworld, the First Legion was still going strong compared to most of their cousins, but were not nearly so numerous as they might have been. The second is that Ultramarine geneseed proved to be simply the most reliable, largely free of mutation (unless someone tries to deliberately mess with it) or other quirks of personality some other successor chapters express. It also had a very low rate of rejection compared to most other Legions. The only other similarly stable, easily implanted Loyalist geneseed repositories were those of the Dark Angels and Imperial Fists, both of whom ended up having either quite a few successor chapters themselves, or just a few chapters with one absurdly huge chapter. If anything, the psychological tendency it imposes is compliance with group conformity, which is far more preferable for the High Lords of Terra (the only group allowed to sanction new foundings or give later recognition to chapters unofficially founded or after loyalist secessions from loyalist chapters) than the various other obsessions that may result.

The third, secret reason the Ultramarines have so many Successors is due to Guilliman and the Mechanicus hiding other legion traitors as Ultramarines. Since the Ultramarines are so numerous, no one would question just another one of their successor chapters. Plus since Guilliman spent a bunch of time after the Heresy as the Imperium's Lord Commander (aka boss man), he would have had ample opportunity to fudge as many of the Loyalist Traitors' chapter origins as he pleased. During the Great Crusade, the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists received reinforcements for the Lost II and XI legions. However, the Ultramarines were also not nearly as devastated during or just after the Heresy as the Imperial Fists were. Guilliman would then also hide loyalists from the traitor legions as his sons including the Silver Skulls. Later foundings using traitor stock may also include (but are not limited to) the Red Scorpions, the Storm Wardens, the Fire Angels, the Sons of Antaeus, the Mortifactors, and the Iron Snakes. There's also a very strong possibility that the Minotaurs fall into this group. How exactly this works for them being "reliable as Ultramarine geneseed" is unknown since you would think the people testing Geneseed would notice the difference between, say, Word Bearer and Ultramarine stock. Also, if Ultramarine geneseed is so reliable, wouldn't the traitor stock spread out through their successor be a dead giveaway? Finally, Guilliman had his mindwiped so he wouldn't know who had traitor geneseed in his ranks. This means that many of his successor chapters may have some traitor geneseed mixed into the pool which must raise some eyebrows once in a while when it gets examined. Maybe the guys doing the geneseed tests just have asterisks next to those cases and count them as "unusual, but acceptable deviancy to never, ever question, ever". However, it's just as likely that Guilliman has people in the Mechanicum hierarchy, like Cawl, who are still actively covering for the Loyalist Traitors.

Because they are the poster-boys for Space Marines, they are perhaps the most famous Chapter in the general 40k fandom, but are widely hated by many denizens of /tg/. This may initially have been due to their popularity - the Space Marines in general suffer something of a backlash from fa/tg/uys because of their overwhelming popularity with the annoying young children that infest the hobby, and the Ultramarines are the most popular of them all - but of recent editions the blatant favouritism displayed by certain Games Workshop writers towards the Chapter have earned them considerable ire, especially from fans of other Space Marine chapters that get slagged off in the process. This is mainly the fault of Matthew Ward's 5th edition Space Marine Codex, which explicitly claimed that the Ultramarines were superior to all other Space Marines (In 2nd edition it was explicitly stated.) and was not helped by Ward's own poor fluff-writing skills (see Quotes below). However, more recent fluff has served to bring the Ultramarines back to their "Space Roman" roots, making them far less objectionable than they were in the past. Forge World's Horus Heresy line has been particularly kind to them, giving them a variety of stylish Heresy-era gear, all of them with that "The Glory That Was Rome" vibe.

First Edition History
Oldschool

Back in the first edition of Warhammer 40,000, in an article co-written by Rick Priestley. The XIIIth Legion were actually traitors and were banished to the Eye of Terror along with the other traitor legions. The modern day 40k Ultramarines were established on new years day 001.M32, which would make them a Third Founding chapter. They received all of the gene-"sperm" & implants, rituals and paraphernalia of the original legion.

Not only that, they only received lordship over the world of Macragge AFTER the First Tyrannic War. And though they did have different names for all of their company captains and command staff, they were/are still commanded by a man named Marneus Calgar.

The implications of this would be startling if we use the "everything is canon, but not necessarily true" stance that GW has adopted when regarding fluff inconsistencies. Hinting that Guilliman's marines were heretics and traitors and were eventually banished from the Imperium.

However, attempting to reconcile this old origin story with "modern" Ultramarines is extremely difficult, we can only coherently insert it into the current state of play if we assume there is a second chapter out there called the "Ultra-Marines" with a chapter master and homeworld of the same name and the same level of involvement with the Tyrannic Wars. Though what completely knocks this old fluff out is that it also has possession of the body of Roboute Guilliman so it has to be a retcon though it still opens the door to conspiracy theories or that Marneus Calgar is in command of multiple Chapters.

The other possibility is that when the Ultramarines were declared traitor and forced into the eye of terror, Guilliman, recognising his plans for Imperium Secondus were about to topple with the death of Sanguinius (who had been declared ruler as a means to placate the Emperor and the other legions), Guilliman had himself cloned and a portion of his legions most pure geneseed moved to the Eastern Fringe and Macragge to ensure survival of the Ultramarines, The Ultramar Empire and the Imperium Secondus concept as its eventuality. This occurred just as the rest of the legion (Including the original primarch) were declared traitor and forced into the eye. It would also suggest, given the appearance of Guilliman's wounded body in stasis on Macragge, that it was in-fact the clone that was killed by Fulgrim and the real primarch still resides either in the eye of terror or the immaterium with the remains of the Ultramarine Traitor Legion.

In either case, somehow one of the two possible Guilliman's was returned to Macragge and placed in stasis <strike>post-mortem</strike> after being Mortally-Wounded. If you accept the cloning of Guilliman, this all makes sense; he wanted to ensure his empire survived and having been declared traitor, cloned himself and sent the clone to rule over the new Imperium, the clone being mortally wounded by Fulgrim en-route. Or somehow, and for some reason, a traitor primarch was dragged out of the eye of terror and kept in stasis on the opposite side of the galaxy. Given the stupidity of that second line of thought, the clone being the primarch on Macragge is a much more likely situation... Especially as if his wounds heal and the clone recovers he would be able to continue acting out the original Guilliman's plans for a second imperium with its epicentre based within the Ultramar Empire and using Space Marines created from the remains of the purest legion-stock geneseed.

Or, infinitely more likely, it's just old fluff which went the way of the Squats after Rogue Trader, and we should hope so, because if it isn't, we also have to reconcile the space marines being entirely beaky space cops. However, there is a ton from Rogue Trader that was not retconned. And besides, the fandom considers Rogue Trader to be the final authority in all things wherever there are lore conflicts (unless one side is significantly more awesome than the other).

Besides, who’s to say that current Ultramarines are the Legio XIII? There are two purged Legions whose numbers were absorbed by the XIII. This makes it easy to connect 1st edition with later renditions as it would mean that Rogue Trader was right about XIII being traitors. If the remaining “Ultramarines” were from the two destroyed legions. The traitorous sons of Guilliman purged by him and his adopted sons who later got revenge with the help of the Alpha Legion.

Name & Breaking the Hyphen
The Ultramarines are not named because they are 'Ultra' as in 'Superior'. They're called "Ultramarines" because their home sector is Ultramar and the demonym is Ultramarine. Think of how people from America are Americans. Taking it as literally as possible, they're the "People of Ultramar," which plays back into their theme of being a part of their home's society. Their armour colouring is "coincidentally" called Ultramarine, which is generally described as being a slightly grapish (in contrast to Phthalo's greenish) blue. So, pronounce it like “Ultramar-ine”. Not that you will since “Ultra Marine” sounds better and is easier to say.

The overseas section of the Spanish Empire was referred to as Ultramar (waaaaaaaaaaay beyond the sea). Given the great distance between Ultramar and Terra, it's a fitting analogy.

In early versions of the Lore, "Ultramarines" (As they are now known) are spelt in a myriad of different ways. Rick Priestly himself describing them as "Ultra-Marines". Other versions include "Ultra Marines", "The Ultra-Marine Chapter" and <strike>"Smurfs"</strike> BLAM amongst many other iterations. In all instances, and all cases (even accounting for the First Edition lore above) it can be assumed the lore refers to the same Chapter or Legion. Punctuation matters, just not in 40K...
Honour is resisting a tyrant when all others suckle and grow fat on the hypocrisy he feeds them.
Unless you are new here, then you should be well informed by now over the really skubtastic history involving the Ultramarines and the dreaded Ward. While Ward was indeed responsible for the immense butthurt and rage caused on /tg/ and to 1d4Chan itself (Seriously just look at the pages history, it was a war on green and red edits), Ward himself wasn't completely at fault here, Games Workshop is just as much to blame for their irresponsible and careless attitude in handling fluff to a clearly biased player and gave him the green light to write whatever things Ward could come out with. However after Ward's quite unexpected departure in 2014 (He came back in 2016 though, just hope he can control his Ultramarine urges now(he can’t)), the Ultramarines have been getting....less of the limelight like they used to back in the heydays of Codex: Space Marines 5th Edition. Nowadays, the Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Dark Angels and even the Deathwatch are getting more in the spotlight. While the Ultramarines are still the de facto mascots of WH40K, it seems that the post-Ward era has seen the return of more... diverse forms of Space Marine Chapters. Furthermore, the Horus Heresy lineups made by our favorite Forgeworld has been giving the Ultramarines and the rest of the Space Marine Legions an equal respect in both their lore and crunch which was unthinkable back in the day, "The Salamanders and Raven Guard get their own moment to shine without the Ultras overshadowing them? How preposterous!" would be the most likely answer if went back in time and told our past selves over this.

Additionally the Forgeworld model for Roboute Guilliman has been well received by fans with some commenting that of all the Primarch models, Guilliman's was one of the best designed and posed (although the truth is that his armour has went from Greco-Roman in style to Marvel, and in spite of all his Mary Sue-ness, he's still likely to get stomped over by an Imperial Knight or Assault Terminators). What does this mean for our (in)famous blueberries? A redemption of sorts? Winning back the crowd? Earning back the respect it once had? The answer could be all of them. Whatever is the case, the legacy of Ward and the Ultramarine fiasco did impact the way players see the Ultramarines and the Space Marines to an extent either negatively or positively (More inclined to the negativity though). But seeing as how GeeDubs still has the Cruddhead, it can be seen with some sigh of relief that GeeDubs seems to be back to their grips now in terms of fluff at least.

Tabletop
Throughout most of GW's history the Ultramarines have been portrayed on the tabletop as the "standard" space marine chapter, to the point where most other chapters are represented as "Ultramarines +,- variable X". More popular chapters often get their own codices, but less popular chapters get relegated to sets of advantages and disadvantages on top of the Ultramarine baseline. At certain points in GW's sordid tabletop history this has led to Ultramarines being literally vanilla marines with no bonuses whatsoever, where the only advantage to taking them is their wide selection of characters, and other times such as 7th edition where with the right builds and the right tactics, you could statistically beat out the Blood Angels and Space Wolves in assault, and Dark Angels and Imperial Fists in shooting.

8th Edition is probably the best they've ever been while not being quite as cheesy as they were in the past. Their strategies, characters, chapter tactics, and warlord trait all grant bonuses to command points, to the point where you can get the effective use of 20(!) command points on stratagems in a 2000 point game, leading to an army with massive tactical flexibility. Gone are the days were you can butcher melee dedicated forces in close combat, and out-shoot the gun-factories of the universe, a bunch of damn sues who win because they are - of course - the BEST EVAR. Now you get the Ultramarines as they should be: a versatile but non-specialized army with the tactical and strategic flexibility to make the most out of any situation.

*Marneus Augustus Calgar: Regent of Ultramar and Chapter Master of the Ultramarines. His accomplishments include being thoroughly ripped apart by the Swarmlord (by that we mean all his limbs, a large portion of his body and his eye), and single handedly holding off an Ork Waaagh! for 9 days all by himself. However, his crowning moment is his defeat of an Eldar Avatar of Khaine in 1 vs 1, hand-to-hand combat, which is typically killed by the same effort it takes to kill a Khornate Bloodthirster - never mind that the thing is made of molten metal and over three times his size. He also had a rematch with the Swarmlord and won, which must have been pretty easy, considering that it had been recently ripped apart. Has also faced Abaddon the Despoiler as well (following turning into a Primaris Marine), but his plot armor wasn't as strong that day and he just barely escaped that mess.
*Severus Agemman: Captain of the Ultramarines First Company. He was Captain of the Second Company, and Sicarius' commanding officer before being promoted after the First Tyrannic War. There isn't much fluff about him besides being overshadowed by his former subordinate Sicarius. As first Company Captain he's Calgar's appointed successor, however much of the chapter thinks it will be Sicarius instead of him. Agemman is aware of this possibility and isn't very happy about it. As of the end of the Plague Wars, Severus serves as the Tetrarch of the northern reaches of Ultramar.
*Cato Sicarius: Former captain of the Ultramarines Second Company and Leader of Guilliman's Victrix Guard. Is kind of a glory hog, but he's arguably earned his right to be a braggart through his skill at arms. Was taken on as a ward by the primarch after his resurrection, mostly because Cato's brash, forthright personality reminded him of Aeonid Thiel, whose counsel Guilliman greatly missed. His Captaincy was given to Sevastus Acheran after getting lost in the warp and was assigned the Victrix Honour Guard Captain after escaping.
*Sevastus Acheran: Successor of Cato Sicarius as captain of the 2nd company, and is basically (from what little lore we have of him) a sneakier, more badass version of Sicarius. He was the one who led an assault by the Vanguard on a massive daemon factory in Shadowspear, and was willing to sacrifice himself once that attack went bad. He survived however, leading the 2nd company during the Plague Wars (This time wearing Gravis Armor).
*Uriel Ventris: Captain of the Ultramarines Fourth Company and the main character of Graham McNeil's Ultramarines novel series. Notable for destroying the Daemonculaba.
*Ortan Cassius: Master of Sanctity of the Ultramarines and ex-member of the Deathwatch. Currently one of the oldest Space Marines alive and not yet placed in a Dreadnought. The Tyrannic War Veterans were his idea.
*Varro Tigurius: the Ultramarine's (Primaris) Chief Librarian, has enough psychic prowess to make psychic contact with the Hive Mind without going bonkers in the process.
*Torias Telion: (aka; Sean Connery made Grimdark) Ultramarine Scout Sergeant. A skilled sniper, other chapters have borrowed him to train their scouts occasionally. He also has an impressive mustache.
*Captain Titus: Captain of the who the fuck knows company (if the trim of his pauldrons are accurate, he's Captain of the 2nd Company). He gained prominence (will gain prominence?) on the forge world of Graia, trying to keep a whole Waaagh! from stealing all the bitz for themselves while keeping a probably radical Inquisitor happy. Also there's a portal to the warp letting out Daemons and Chaos Marines to go on a jolly old pub crawl. He is also one of the few Ultramarines who clearly states that the Codex Astartes is not meant to be a mental straightjacket. Thus, he is awesome.
*Varnus: Ultramarines Chaplain dispatched to Lorn V, tasked with bodyguarding and delivering a Titan's Princeps and his crew to the abandoned Dominatus, worked alongside grit incarnate on legs (also known as General Sturnn). For perhaps the first instance in recorded time, he is a Space Marine who actually respects the Imperial Guard and couldn't ask for a better force (barring his own company). He is also a pretty hard-ass motherfucker that single-handedly charged a Bloodthirster and won.
*Aeonid Thiel: A sergeant during the Horus Heresy. Despite being seen as a rule breaking maverick for proposing battle simulations of Space Marines fighting one another, he ends up playing a major role first in the Battle of Calth, then in laying the groundwork for the Ultramarines post-war, including the red painted helmets for sergeants. Also served as the co-writer of the Codex. Promoted to Captain of the 2nd Company at the time of Guilliman's wounding, though his ultimate fate is unknown.
*Decimus Felix: Primaris Captain of the Ultramarines Eleventh Company (Though one doesn't quite exist) and Equerry to Guilliman. Despite the utterly suspicious circumstances of such a fresh-ish face being afforded this much power, he acts as the voice of reason for the primarch. Acts as Tetrarch to the eastern reaches of Ultramar and has been trolled a bit by Cawl.
*Sergeant Cornellus: A sergeant of an embarrassing squad. Notable for killing Eliphas the Inheritor the first time, stopping a daemon invasion and finding the Ultramarines Scrabble set all while sounding like a baby
*Vitrian Messinius is a White Consuls Captain and Master of Recruits who commands the Indomitus Crusade Fleet Tertius' Battlegroup Saint Aster as a Lord-Lieutenant as well as being in charge of Roboute Guilliman's security (probably due to him getting shanked ) and is part of his personal retinue, the Victrix-Guard <del> sounds Roman enough right Games Workshop? </del>
*Smurfette: The only female member of the Ultramarine chapter.

Daily Rituals
04:00 - The Ultramarines rise up from their sleep in their marble-encased sleeping chambers. The Primarch has already been awake for some time, having lost the need for sleep as a side effect of his revival. (Good thing, too- according to Guilliman himself the Armor of Fate is too noisy to let him rest, and even if it wasn't the armor doesn't have the flexibility to let him lie down in the first place.)

04:30 - Morning Prayers. The Ultramarines conduct morning prayers on why they are the SECOND TO TEH EMPRAH! and how all other chapters view Marneus Calgar as their Spritual Liege.

05:30 - Codex Astartes. The Ultramarines are indoctrinated and reminded on the rules and values of the Codex Astartes. Guilliman makes a note to break the news of his Codex revisions gently so his gene-sons don't go into conniptions.

08:00 - Morning Firing Rites. The Ultramarines enter target practice with spiritual guidance from Chaplain Ortan Cassius, who manages to only occasionally go off into furious rants about "The goddam bugs".

09:00 - Battle Practice. The Ultramarines leave for Macragge's Colosseum to train against each other, the local Macragge fauna and Battle Servitors.

10:00 - Morning Meal. While later than some chapters, the Ultramarines feast upon a light meal made of fruits, biscuits and light meat by the Chapter serfs. The serfs are thanked soon afterwards in a manner of respect.

10:15 - Tactical Indoctrination. The Ultramarines head to see the latest battle plans and which military techniques that can best complement the Codex Astartes. Guilliman reviews the most recent major warzones of the Imperium and prepares battle plans for the forces deployed there.

10:30 - Meetings with the Spiritual Liege. Whilst the rest of the Ultramarines practice reciting the Codex Astartes, the leaders from each of the Ultramarine's companies discuss political, social and military affairs of Ultramar and the Imperium at large. When the Primarch has the opportunity to be present, discussions and tactical briefings on his long absence last for hours, with plenty of facepalming and sighing from said Primarch.

11:00 - Afternoon Wargames. The Ultramarines conduct miniature wargames to best simulate strategic and combat play which can be learned and adapted in real life combat.

13:00 - Midday Meal. A light meal of cheese, bread, meats and vegetables is prepared by the Chapter serfs. Sometimes they have a soup tasty enough for them to sing about later.

13:30 - Codex Astartes. More indoctrination of the Codex Astartes are read to ensure that the Ultramarines never diverge from the book of Guilliman. The Primarch privately wonders how his words about the Codex being a guideline could have been misinterpreted so badly.

15:00 - Evening Firing Rites. The Ultramarines enter target practice.

16:00 - Battle Practice. The Ultramarines are now dropped into the wilderness of Macragge to fend off the local fauna and flora there. The animals and plants killed are sent to the Chapter Serfs for more ingredients.

17:00 - Evening Prayers. The Ultramarines gather together to pray on why they are the chosen chapter and why the Ultramar System is the best system.

18:00 - Nighttime Firing Rites. The Ultramarines take target practice in the night to further hone in their nocturnal experience.

19:00 - Battle Practice. The Ultramarines descend to one of the neighboring planets in Ultramar to further fight the planet's local fauna and flora, as well as the various nasty things Nurgle has been attacking Ultramar with lately.

19:30 - Daily Medical Checkup. Whilst the rest of the Ultramarines are busy practicing their combat prowess, the long hours of having to keep the entire Imperium afloat has left Roboute Guilliman in a state of dismay, anger and minor facial injuries due to repeated facepalming. Apothecaries try and fail to warn their Primarch that continued usage of the facepalm will eventually give the Avenging Son a concussion. Any battle-brothers who have come into contact with the forces of Nurgle are painstakingly decontaminated to prevent the spread of any warp-contagion.

20:00 - Evening Meal. A feast made from the creatures slain by the Ultramarines earlier on is cooked in the finest ingredients. Cooking it perfectly gets the serf a purity seal of valor while cooking it imperfectly forces the serf to be read the entire Codex Astartes section on cooking. Guilliman privately wonders how the joke section made it into the official print.

21:00 - Cleaning up Guilliman's chambers. The Ultramarines go and clean up their Primarch's marble chambers after Macragge's daily tourist traps are closed for the night. Despite the Avenging Son's frequent absences from Ultramar, they like to be sure his quarters are just as he left them.

22:00 - Free Time. The Ultramarines get free time. Some continue to read the Codex Astartes, others pray to the Emperor while some go out of their Fortress Monastery to catch up on the local news and political affairs as well as hanging out with the citizens of Macragge.

24:00 - Rest Period. The Ultramarines descend back to their marble-encased sleeping chambers to rest, save for Guilliman who is needed elsewhere in the Imperium.

The Space Wolves (also known as The Rout or the Vlka Fenryka) is a Space Marine Chapter hailing from the icy Death World of Fenris, who appreciate the value of a strong and consistent brand identity. They are known as noble, if savage warriors, who have little love for Imperial bureaucracy but will fight fiercely for its common citizens. The Marines of the Chapter are famed as experts in the art of close combat, much like the Blood Angels, but unlike the sons of Sanguinius their fighting style is less that of a maddened, blood-crazed berserker, but that of a cunning pack of hunters running down their prey.

Thematically, the Chapter draws a lot of real-world inspiration from Nordic culture, especially the Viking sagas, particularly in terms of aesthetics as well as ferocity. That said, there's a bit of a disconnect between how the Wolves are portrayed in fiction compared to how they're presented as a tabletop army.

On one hand, we have a nuanced portrayal of a proud warrior tradition that just so happens to have the Wolf as its primary totem animal, among many other Fenrisian nature spirits they worship. On the other, we have an over-the-top army of wolf fetishists that precedes most of their equipment and vehicle names with "wolf", ride actual giant wolves into battle, and are like a drunken frat party outside of it. Depending on who you ask, they're either one of the most badass Space Marine chapters of all who understand the indisputable fact that wolves, axes, and being Space Vikings are all Awesome, or are a bunch of insufferably inconsistent Mary Sues that almost make Matt Ward's Ultramarines and Grey Knights look good. Or, if you go completely by the memes, the wolfiest wolves to have ever wolfed.

Origins
Back during the Great Crusade, the Space Wolves began as the VIth Legion, and was developed in conjunction the Salamanders and the Alpha Legion. Developed in isolation from the other two Legions, they proved to be a vicious and aggressive fighting force, but also almost impossible to keep in line by its officers. What's worse, they were indiscriminate in their slaughter, and even helpless civilians were not free from their wrath. Due to this brutal reputation, they soon became known as "the Rout", the Emprah's agents of fear and retribution.

The Wolf King cometh
The ice world of Fenris was found early on by the Crusade fleets, and the Emperor soon heard of the exploits of its so-called Wolf King, a man named Leman Russ. Raised in the wilderness by wolves, then adopted and educated by the jarl Thengir, Leman was a massive ox of a man of extraordinary strength, sharp cunning, and personal magnetism, and the Emprah was sure he was one of His lost sons. He descended onto the world in disguise, ingratiated Himself to the locals to gain access to the High King's feasting hall, and there he sought to test the Wolf King's mettle.

Depending on the version or edition, this led to the following: an eating contest, a drinking contest, and a brawl. Leman won the first two rounds, but was finally goaded into a fight when the Emprah insulted him, saying that he was nothing more than a glutton and a drunkard. What followed next was either a massive fight that wrecked the drinking hall, Beowulf versus Grendel style, or the Emprah laying out Leman with a single fabulously golden Power Fist to the forehead.

Regardless, when Leman finally came to, the Emprah revealed himself, and told him about his true origin as one of his Primarchs, as well as his role in the greater Crusade. What happened next, as they say, is history.

From the Rout to the Wolves
Leman Russ' rediscovery, and the integration of his own Fenrisian retinue, slowly remade the VIth Legion. Their ferocity was soon tempered with discipline and obedience, as the Fenrisian culture slowly spread through its ranks, and while they would still crush any traitor to the Emperor, they would at least have the good sense this time not to slaughter the innocents that just so happened to be in the area. It didn't happen overnight, but soon enough the Legion became less about punishing oathbreakers, and more on watching out for the little guy.

Oh, and if an offhand comment by Russ is to be believed, they had a hand in destroying the two so-called Lost Legions. Emperor's Executioners indeed.

Under Russ' leadership, the Wolves proved their worth to the fledgling Imperium by winning many victories and conquering many worlds, which brought them glory and even more notoriety. On one of their campaigns, they managed to recover a near-complete STC printout of a battle tank, and as a bit of thanks, the Martian adepts named it after the Legion's Primarch.

It was also during this period that the Wolves' rivalry with the Dark Angels began, a feud that still continues into the present day of the Imperium. While the specifics have been lost to myth and legend, the Dulan Campaign ended with Leman Russ and his brother, the mercurial Lion El'Jonson, in a one-on-one duel. This culminated with Leman knocked out flat on his back, the Dark Angels leaving in a huff, and the Space Wolves similarly insulted by the Lion not being a good sport about everything.

The Heresy Dawns
The Space Wolves are infamous for their role in the burning of Prospero, the homeworld of the Thousand Sons Legion. Though they were initially ordered to bring in Magnus the Red alone for both going against the edicts of the Council of Nikea, as well as accidentally breaching the defenses of the Imperial Webway, their orders were changed by Horus (who they were unaware was already full-hog traitor at this point) to instead burn the planet and its inhabitants to the ground.

This blind adherence to orders, not helped by the fact that Leman wanted to confront his nerd of a brother for his shenanigans, was the final straw. Prospero was literally and figuratively put to the torch in the ensuing battles between the Legions, as well as Leman's Adeptus Custodes and Sisters of Silence babysitters. When Magnus finally joined the fray to save his sons, Leman met him in one-on-one combat, and while the Wolf King was badly mauled over the course of the duel, Magnus was broken and forced to flee with the surviving Thousand Sons.

In the end, Magnus was forced to throw his lot with Chaos in order to survive, and his Legion followed suit, joining Horus in his rebellion.

The battered Wolves were not allowed any respite however, as they were soon hounded by a massive Alpha Legion fleet, and forced to flee into the Alaxxes Nebula. While a breakout was eventually executed, the Space Wolves fleet eventually found itself cornered. As they prepared for a last stand, unexpected aid arrived in the form of a Dark Angels fleet. With the Alpha Legion driven off, Russ was left to ponder what to do next.

Eventually Russ and a small contingent of his men managed to find their way to Terra, while the rest of the Space Wolves fleet continued to harry the Traitors. He sponsored an expedition to Molech to see if Horus could be taken down, but this just resulted in getting dozens of Knights-Errant killed. Afterward, in a council with his brothers Rogal Dorn, Sanguinius, and Jaghatai Khan, Leman decided to forego Dorn's plan in delaying the traitors at the Battle of Beta Garmon, and instead returned to Fenris to try and divine a way to take away all those juicy Chaos boons that were supercharging Horus.

The Wolf King and the Luna Wolf
In what amounted to be a spirit quest (where, among other things, Russ met a possible version of himself who stayed on Terra and never grew up on Fenris), Leman decided that he would confront his brother Horus one last time. For this task, he would need to use the Spear of Russ (yes THAT Spear of Russ, that Ragnar Blackmane would use many millennia later), a weapon that he absolutely hated (because it gave him the literal heebie-jeebies) and actually tried to get rid of multiple times, but which somehow always managed to return to him.

It turns out that the Spear was a massively powerful artifact invested with a fragment of the Emprah's power, with the ability to reveal the "truth" of whatever it pierces. Although the chance was slim, Leman hoped to use it to convince his brother to return to the Imperial fold and let their father heal him; if the Warmaster remained undaunted, Leman would then use the spear to slay the traitor for good.

Leman knew that it was a suicide mission, and indeed made it clear to his assembled Wolf Lords that their participation was voluntary, but none of them refused to join their Primarch. If their death was to come, then it would be together with their Battle-brothers.

The Battle of Trisolian 4A
The Forge World of Trisolian -- where a young and cheeky tech adept named Belisarius Cawl and his buddy were taking what amounted to their internships -- had just surrendered to Traitor forces, and was in the process of hosting the Vengeful Spirit and its escorts. Then all of the sudden, this absolutely massive fleet (made up of around fifty ships of the line from the various Traitor Legions) found itself under attack.

Taking advantage of the gravitational interactions of the Trisolian system's three stars, the Space Wolves fleet had snuck into the sector, and threw its vastly-outnumbered ships at the gathered armada. As the ships of the Rout tried to make as much as a ruckus as it could, Leman confronted the Vengeful Spirit with his own flagship, the Hrafnkel, and as the latter's barrage collapsed the former's void shields, Leman personally led a massive assault unto his brother's flagship using everything he still had -- boarding torpedoes, assault boats, teleport deep-strikes, and even gunships.

As thousands of Space Wolves ran wild inside the Vengeful Spirit, Leman personally tracked down Horus in the heart of the corrupted ship, while down below Cawl managed to make sure his master met an "accident", and took control of the Mechanicus forces to aid the Space Wolves. The Wolf King eventually found the Warmaster, and was disgusted at what he beheld -- Horus was wallowing in Chaos corruption, and was half-mad as a result. When words didn't work, Russ attacked his brother, knowing too well he was outmatched.

Then the Spear managed to pierce Horus' side. The wound was not fatal, though it could have been, had Leman not hesitated, but it was enough -- the madness cleared from Horus' eyes, and for the first time in what seemed to be forever Horus' mind was clear. Despite this however, the Warmaster would not be swayed; he was in too deep to stop now, and of his own free will this time, still decided to continue the fight against the Emperor.

Horus continued his assault on Leman, and had mauled him gravely. Before he could finish him off with Worldbreaker however, one Space Wolf, followed by dozens, which were then followed by scores of marines, interposed themselves between the Warmaster and their Primarch. Horus cut them all down all the same, but their sacrifice bought Bjorn the time he needed to drag the injured Leman Russ to a Stormbird, and then back to the Hrafnkel.

With their Primarch secured, the Space Wolves fleet made a fighting retreat, but all seemed lost as the Vengeful Spirit and its cohort seemed to be catching up... Then one of its magazines exploded, crippling it enough to allow the Wolves to escape.

The Wolves would fight another day, but the price was too high. Of the Wolves that went into Trisolian, only one-fifth managed to make the escape. The VIth Legion effectively stopped being an effective fighting force from that point on, and had to be eventually rescued by the Primarch Corvus Corax and his Raven Guard after the fleet was cornered by Abaddon's forces at Yarant.

The Wolves would sit out the remainder of the Heresy, and would be still trying to recover as the Siege of Terra came and went, and Horus had his fated showdown with the Emprah.

The Fate of Leman Russ
Of Leman Himself, you ask? Well he stuck around during the Great Scouring, and while he groused about Roboute Guilliman's reforms, he eventually caved in, and begrudgingly agreed to split apart the remains of his ravaged Legion into Chapters.

In theory anyway.

In practice however, due to the massively reduced numbers of the Rout, only one Chapter was ever created -- the ill-fated Wolf Brothers. The rest of the survivors remained Space Wolves, opting instead to stick with their semi-independent Great Companies, as one small snub to the stuck-up Roboute.

Barely a century after the end of the Scouring, Leman Russ just ups and vanishes from Imperial History. Legends state that after a great feast, He said unto his warriors:

<blockquote>"Listen closely Brothers, for my time is short. . There shall come a time far from now when our Chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall, no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime."</blockquote>

And so, Leman departed, with his closest retinue... No, not you Bjorn... Some say he searches for a means to revive His God-Emperor.. But despite the efforts of the Great Hunt, Leman remains beyond the reach of Man... Who knows what great feats of Heroism he undertakes...oh right Kaldor Draigo,

Oddly enough, it seems that Magnus the Red, of all people, has an idea about his brother's fate, but he's not telling anyone, and is far too fond of slaying Leman's get to even care. The 13th company, and a figure bearing the likeness of Russ, was spotted during the 13th crusade and the siege of the capital of Cadia.

Recent History
The Siege of Fenris
Much like the rest of the Imperium, times had been rough for the Space Wolves by the time the end of M41 rolled in. Magnus in particular still had a massive hateboner against the Sons of Russ, and finally put his long-prepared revenge plan into motion. The rebuilt Thousand Sons, plus their Chaos Daemon and Traitor Legion allies, put the worlds of the Fenris system to the sword. Not even the Space Wolves homeworld was spared, and it took the combined effort of the Chapter and a Grey Knights Brotherhood led by Brother-Captain Stern to slow down the massive daemonic incursion that followed.

Then the Dark Angels arrived above Fenris with The Rock, and leading an Imperial task force of fourteen assorted Space Marine Chapters, titans, knight houses, and Imperial Guard, intent on cleansing the system of Chaos filth. Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that the Sons of the Lion were duped by The Changeling, who then proceeded to mass-summon Daemons into the Rock itself.

Things took a turn for the worse when Magnus himself arrived on Fenris, its spiritual nexus already under assault by Thousand Sons covens trying to corrupt them, and what was a hard but possibly winnable fight against a massive invading force turned into a desperate battle for survival. It says a lot that the Iron Priests had to awaken all of the Dreadnoughts of the Fang to fight alongside Bjorn, plus whatever Wulfren that could be found, and even then it wasn't enough. Magnus was far too powerful, and the Daemon Primarch swatted aside Dreadknights with ease, and even pulled down whole Imperial Battlecruisers from the upper atmosphere, just so he could detonate their cores and irradiate the skies above Asaheim.

Magnus would not have his victory however, as through Egil Ironwolf's sacrifice Logan Grimnar was able to wound the Daemon Primarch with strikes from both the Axe of Morkai and the recovered Spear of Russ. With his concentration broken, Magnus was then banished from the Fenris by Grey Knight Purifiers. With Magnus gone, the Thousand Sons and their daemonic allies quickly followed, but the damage had been done. The worlds of the Fenris system were almost all ravaged beyond recovery, and what's worse, due to their populations bearing witness to a massive daemonic incursion, their people had to be liquidated by the Inquisition. Unlike the aftermath of the First War of Armageddon, the Great Wolf didn't make a fuss, as the Chapter was too mauled and weary to oppose them.

The Fall of Cadia and the Era Indomitus
Despite the drubbing they experienced at the hands of Magnus, the Space Wolves were still able to send two Great Companies to Cadia's defense, and while that world eventually fell, they made a good accounting for themselves, with Sven Bloodhowl contributing to the demise of the Blackstone Fortress, while Orven Highfell fell in the defense of Kasr Kraf. As the Great Rift formed and the Imperium was torn in half, and the age seemed to become all the more desperate, the Wolves fought on, but when news of Roboute Guilliman's revival reached the Fang, a small contingent of Wolves braved the long warp journey to Ultramar to confirm it.

During the opening years of the Indomnitus Crusade, Guilliman sent reinforcements for the Sons of Russ, in the form of several companies of Primaris Space Marines. Despite being comparatively weakened for the time and facing a rising Ork threat in their space, Logan Grimnar initially refused to take any assistance from Guilliman, even from Primaris Marines bearing Russ's geneseed, through a combination of pride, stubbornness, and refusal to bend to the so called "Legionbreaker". Guilliman, to his credit, was completely sincere about giving the Wolves Primaris tech without any ulterior motive save for the Wolves to keep doing what they were doing. The few Primaris permitted to come to Fenris were immediately treated as outsiders, because they weren't born on Fenris and hadn't undertaken the same trials as the others. After one Primaris marine managed to travel across continents back to the Fang - and after killing most of the wildlife he encountered along the way - the Wolves became more open to the Mars-born and gradually accepted them. This brought the Space Wolves Great Companies back to fighting shape, and while the Firstborn initially looked upon these newcomers with suspicion, once they had braved the initiation rituals of Fenris (or the adapted version on a chunk of spacehulk for the Mars-born Wolves), those who survived were fully welcomed into their brotherhoods.

Another thing that the Lord Commander brought was even more welcome -- thanks to Belisarius Cawl's efforts, the Space Wolves can now found their own Successors again, and immediately formed strong ties with the first of these Primaris Wolves -- the Wolfspear. While it hasn't quite gotten rid of the Curse of the Wulfen (you don't get it unless you really lose it, and its still better than falling to Chaos), but it was still better than the alternative.

Organization
The Space Wolves ignore the organizational restrictions recommended by the Codex Astartes, and instead forms itself around the Great Companies. These are twelve semi-independent battle groups that are the rough equivalent of a Codex Battle Company, but are functionally much larger in size, with many featuring upwards of more than a hundred fifty battle-ready warriors on top of their support serfs and equipment.

Each Great Company gains much of its character thanks to their Wolf Lords preferences, as well as its tactical preferences -- see Egil Ironwolf's predilection for tanks and heavy artillery, or Ragnar Blackmane's hardon for massed planetary assaults. A long-serving Wolf Lord will definitely leave his mark on a Great Company, and it might take a while for it to reinvent itself under his Successor when he inevitably falls in battle.

Although no Great Company ranks above their fellows, all eventually must defer to the current Great Wolf's Great Company, as it holds both the his household as well as the Chapter's greatest warriors. When the Great Wolf Speaks, everyone must listen.

Hierarchy
The "classic" organization of the Space Wolves is partially based on experience, with the hot-blooded novices starting out with the Blood Claws, before they become battle-hardened enough to become Grey Hunters, etc. There's also a bit of meritocracy here, as a Blood Claw who did a particularly heroic deed might "jump ranks" straight into the Wolf Guard/Thanedom (*coughs* Ragnar *coughs*). It's somewhat implied in some of the text regarding long fangs such as "Their former Packs, whittled down to but a handful of Veterans" that Blood claw squads are not reinforced and as the members gain experience they are promoted to Grey Hunter then to Long Fang as a unit.

The arrival of the Primaris has put a slight wrinkle into this however, but the Wolves are, if anything, adaptable.

*Great Wolf: Also known as the High King, he is the equivalent to the Chapter Master of other Chapters. The Great Wolf is also effectively the First Captain of the Space Wolves, commanding an elite Great Company that includes the members of the three Priesthoods and the Chapter's Dreadnoughts. Logan Grimnar serves as the current Great Wolf.
*Wolf Lord: Also known as Jarls, they are the equivalent of the Brother-Captains of a company in Codex Chapters. Wolf Lords lead their Great Companies; likewise Great Companies owe a lot of their personality and tactical preferences to their Wolf Lords.
* Wolf Guard: A cross between Veterans and Honour Guard, Wolf Guards (Thanes) serve as the body guard of the Wolf Lord and leading packs in battle, serving as the Space Wolves version of a Brother-Sergeant. They also get Terminator armour. In Second Edition they also got to take any weapons they liked and could be built from stock parts with an Assault Cannon and Cyclone Missile Launcher. This led to many games being won as Assault Force Dickhead rampaged across the table murdering everything.
* Wolf Priest: Combining the role of Apothecary and Chaplain, the Wolf Priests do the standard roles of preaching and medical duties, but are also charged with recruiting Aspirants for their companies. Plus they have a secret role on the battlefield, trying to prevent their battle-brothers from turning into Wulfen.
* Iron Priest: The Iron Priests serve the role of Techmarines, overseeing the motorpool and equipment of the companies they belong to.
* Rune Priest: Taking the role of Librarians in Codex Chapters, Rune Priests are the psykers of the Space Wolves. However, instead of seeing their powers as coming from the Warp, they hold that their powers come from the world spirit of Fenris, and consult the runes in a means to divine the future. Trying to explain to the Rune Priests that they're drawing power from the Warp, and that they cannot "draw their powers from Fenris" while being half-Galaxy away from it will usually result in the non-Space Wolf getting a month's stay in the Apothecarion. The ultimate irony of this is that they are, in reality, Sorcerers, the very thing they denounced the Thousand Sons for being. Whether they are psykers or not. Besides, if Fenris has a world spirit, it is something akin to a Daemon World (or an eldar maiden world)...
* Wolf Scouts: Each Great Company will have members who shun their pack brothers and are shunned in return, preferring the company of more somber individuals, Wolf Scouts serve to scout out enemy positions and terrain. As opposed to the regular codex, Wolf Scouts tend to be veterans of battle able to rein in their savage rage.
* Lone Wolf: Space Wolves who are the last of their pack. The loss of their brethren drive them to seek a glorious death in combat at the hands of some form a fell enemy. Think of Dwarf Slayers only a few meters taller with power armour and weapons of doom and destruction. Often the only way out of the Lone Wolf lifestyle is managing to kill something that the individual shouldn't have survived killing and being elevated into the Wolf Guard. They sometimes take part in a small pack of Wolf Scouts, being lonely wolves in company of other lonely wolves, which technically should defeat the purpose of the analogy.
* Skyclaws: Skyclaws are the trouble makers among a Chapter of trouble makers, forced to wear Jump Packs. The Space Wolves view Jump Packs as an insult, reasoning that if the Emperor wanted them to fly, he would have given them wings.
* Thunderwolf Cavalry: Space Wolves who function in a manner similar to a Bike Squad, but instead of actual bikes, they use Thunderwolves, which can be the size of a small car, and biologically more akin to Terran rhinoceros than actual oversized wolves.
* Long Fangs: Taking the role of Devastators, Long Fangs are veterans who have grown long in the fang. No pun here - Space Wolves' teeth actually lengthen as they age, as an effect of a mutated Betcher's Gland.
* Grey Hunters: Having the role of Tactical Marines, Grey Hunters are those Marines who have survived long enough as Blood Claws to quell the worst of their ferocity and blood lust (read: wear a helmet in battle). Their new found experience and control allows them to shoot and fight better than their younger brethren.
* Blood Claws: Neophyte Space Wolves who serve in the Assault Marine roles of Codex Chapters. As mature as a buncha punks that just discovered a Metal band and think the life of a Marine is fucking Chaos’ shit up and killing stuff. Unsurprisingly, the survival rate among this guys is not that high. Something to point out, is that it is perfectly possible for a Blood Claw to stay on this rank for his entire life if you are not seen as someone to trust in a higher rank.

As of the new Codices, the Primaris Marines seem to have slotted seamlessly into this, though the Primaris neophytes don't start out as Blood Claws, and instead join the line as Intercessors, etc.

* Intercessors: Space Wolves intercessors seem to have gained a rivalry with the Grey Hunters, as steadfast gunlines that can anchor a flank. This rivalry manifests in typical one-upsmanship via drinking and eating contests, and other feats of strength outside the battlefield, and kill counts during firefights.
* Inceptors: The most impetuous of the Primaris, Inceptors are always aching for ways to prove themselves. Of those who arrived with the Indomitus Crusade, the Inceptors were the most eager to take the Trials of Morkai, and seemed to have fully bought into the boisterous Fenrisian customs.
* Aggressors: The most bro of the Primaris Wolves, Aggressors are friendly and boisterous, to the point that they could be heard laughing heartily during combat. For all their loudness however they're not headstrong or impetuous -- far from it, as they make sure they're deployed to the places in the line where they can make the most impact.
* Reivers: The opposite of the Aggressors, Reivers apparently make for poor drinking buddies, but more than make up for their effectiveness of their terror tactics. Its no surprise that they've become best buds with the Wolf Scouts, who they're often also partnered with in patrols.
** Hounds of Morkai: A unique cult of edgy reivers who envision themselves as standing by the gates of Morkai. These marines are specially trained to hunt down witches, focusing more on melee and adorned in runic totems that blunt the effect of psykers. They also have special vox-emitters made specifically to interfere with casting.
* Hellblasters: Surprisingly fatalistic, Space Wolf Hellblasters believe that their sagas are tied with their plasma weaponry, and while they relish bringing ruin to the enemies of the All-Father, they also accept that, if they need to, they will go out in blazes of glory that will definitely put a fiery climax to their sagas.

Unique Assets
The Space Wolves have several bits of equipment that differentiate them from a "generic" Codex Chapter.

They have their own equivalent to power weapons, the so-called Frost weapons, the most famous is the Frost Axe. With their blades made from either diamonds or crystals native to Fenris, they shine like cold ice once their fields are active.

Speaking of native crystals, these are used for their Helfrost weaponry, which fire subzero blasts of cold that can freeze its target in place. These are either man-portable, or mounted on their many vehicles.

While the Chapter has its own complement of bike squads, they also have heavy cavalry in the form of the ferocious Thunderwolf Cavalry. These warriors form a close bond with these apex predators, who then allow themselves to be use as mounts.

Space Wolves heroes also are able to bring with them regular wolves into battle, much like Leman Russ before them. These wolves are treated less like pets, and more like family and fellow warriors, and many Wolf Lords owe their lives to these faithful packs.

On the subject of Leman Russ; prior editions allowed the Space Wolves to use the heavy tank of the same name, their codex being the first sighting of the Leman Russ Exterminator but past 3ed edition this was quietly dropped.

Rather than the Stormraven and its variants, the Space Wolves rely on the Stormwolf to airlift battle-brothers to key locations, and the Stormclaw as a dedicated gunship. And yes, they're very wolfy in profile.

Recruitment
The basic way the Space Wolves make more of themselves is when their Wolf Priests mingle with and challenge the champions of the peoples of Fenris to talent scout for the best of them to take back to their fortress monastery The Fang for more trials, ending in the aspirants being implanted with the Space Wolves' gene-seed by drinking from the Cup of Wulfen and then undergoing the Test of Morkai - the aspirant is dropped off alone far away from The Fang with minimal clothing and equipment and has to brave the unforgiving and cold environment filled with monsters to make it back and be accepted as a Space Wolf after which they'll receive the remainder of the Space Marine enhancements. Some aspirants as this point will turn into Wulfen and go feral, becoming another living danger to the aspirants.

Befitting the Space Wolves' Viking Marines schtick, other Space Wolves aspirants are chosen by instead being quasi-taken to Valhalla while in the throes of a particularly impressive, heroic, and imminent death which causes a Wolf Priest who saw him decide to save their life and take the individual for induction at The Fang and the chance to become quasi-einherjar.

As the Space Wolves' selection process looks for people who have more proven themselves in some way instead of the usual method of getting your candidates and weeding them out in subsequent trials, the Space Wolves are distinct for their recruits potentially actually having have their balls drop before they become Space Wolves.

Combat doctrine
Jokes aside, Space Wolves doctrine normally builds their strategies around a "Pack" -- a group of unusually close battle-brothers that have very often been together since they were Blood Claws. While a Wolf Lord will generally set some broad strategies in a campaign, by and large he leaves the actual details and implementation to individual Pack Leaders. This... sort of works, as each pack's competitive nature eggs them on to one-up their buddies, but not so to the detriment of the campaign. This means that most of the time multiple packs will work together to accomplish a particular goal. It's a bit like Gimli and Legolas having their Orc killing competition in The Two Towers. They each obviously wanted to win, but the goal was not to be achieved by sabotaging the other or forgetting about the overriding situation. Instead, it was to be carried out in service to the larger goal of winning the battle.

Space Wolves in general love a good scrap, and many will find that their "tactics" involve getting as close in as possible to their enemies and punching their lights out. Even the more sensible Long Fangs, who often roll their eyes at such youthful bravado, still indulge in the occasional brawl.

That said, all of this is still tempered by the Wolf Lord in charge of the Great Company. For example, Erik Morkai prefers stealth and very brutal ambushes, hence his preference for Wolf Scouts (and likely Reivers), while Engir Krakendoom likes going to war in all sorts of armored transports while escorted by Swiftclaw outriders.

Criticism
As many on /tg/ will happily tell you, (and Magnus won’t stop raging about) the Wolves are far from perfect. Where the Imperial Fists are inflexible and stubborn, the Dark Angels are unreliable and austere, and the Raven Guard are aloof and brooding, the Wolves are boisterous and arrogant. During the Heresy (and/or when Chris Wraight is writing them) they were incredibly brutal toward those they saw as oath-breakers, even if the oath-breaker in question was a fleeing, defenseless civilian.

The Ragnar Blackmane books further emphasize this and also portrayed the Chapter as willing to ignore the misdeeds of their heroes in spite of the importance they place on honor. This, combined with the Wolves hating the Thousand Sons for being psykers while also using psykers led many to label the Wolves hypocrites, especially since the Space Wolves pick a fight with the Flesh Tearers for killing civilians in spite of their own troubled history in that regard.

Now, everyone including Wolves players admit that the Sons of Russ are entirely too short-sighted and prone to making enemies for their own good. During the Heresy, almost nobody liking them bit them in the ass at Alaxxes Nebula, but fast-forward to M41 and they're happily pissing off the Inquisition, Ecclesiarchy, Dark Angels, Ultramarines, etc. During Warzone Fenris, the galaxy at large is only too ready to write the Wolves off as heretics. Fans and detractors alike also note that it's arguable whether being so quick to make enemies and disobey orders to save civilians really saves more people in the long run, especially at Armageddon, where the Wolves' actions backfire badly.

They're also seen as recklessly wasteful. While many chapters use inexperienced, unproven initiates as <strike>recon-in-force fodder</strike> scouts, only the Wolves give their new recruits chainswords and throw them howling at the enemy in frontal assaults that only Perturabo and the Chenkov could appreciate.

Civilians
Of all the inconsistently written aspects of the Chapter, this is by far the worst offender. Sometimes, the Space Wolves are written as brutal and merciless, giving zero fucks about collateral damage or civilian casualties. On the other hand, sometimes the Wolves put their lives on the line to protect the innocent. This can induce Rage in just about any fan, because some people get into the Space Wolves seeing them as heroes while others prefer their more savage, bloodthirsty tendencies.

The best fluff attempts to find a middle ground by presenting them as violent and pragmatic, but disciplined during the Heresy and increasingly heroic over time. By M41, the Wolves actively stop the Flesh Tearers from murdering Imperial civilians at Honour's End, disobey orders so they could protect the settlers at Thressiax, and play chicken with the Inquisition to save the people of Armageddon; this example is particularly notable, because the Wolves didn't just attempt to save the civilians from the Inquisition, for the first few months of the conflict they did so with passive resistance, defending civilian transports with the shields and hulls of their own ships, never firing back. This paints a picture of a Chapter that actually becomes MOAR independent and heroic as the galaxy goes to shit around them. Or perhaps, they've remained the same and the galaxy has gone so grimdark that the Space Wolves now appear heroic in comparison.

Then Warzone Fenris happened. In it, the Wolves pretty much abandon their allies to focus on the Wulfen.

Notable Members
*Leman Russ: Primarch of the Space Wolves, Wolf King of Fenris, the Lord of Winter and Ruin, and Vikingest of the Viking Marines. Despite his tendency to be a pigheaded jackass, he was ultra-loyal to the Emperor and accepted his role without question, even when it involved things like disappearing another legion and primarch or purging entire worlds of mind-controlled humans. He and his legion didn't actually accomplish that much during the Heresy aside from fucking Prospero with no lube, though he almost managed to decorrupt Horus at Trisolian. Abruptly left Fenris for some reason in the aftermath of the Scouring and hasn't been seen since, though he promised his sons he would return for their final battle no matter what. May currently be pillaging his way through the Warp, searching for a means to resurrect the Emperor, or trying to find Magnus.
*Bjorn the Fell Handed: The oldest active loyalist Space Marine in the galaxy. He served at Russ' side throughout the Heresy and became the first Great Wolf of the chapter after Russ took off. Wound up interred in a Dreadnought at some point and now alternates between napping in the Aett and yelling at those damn psykers and everyone else in the galaxy to get off his lawn.
*Hvarl Red-Blade: Jarl of either the 4th or 7th Grand Company because FW can't proofread for shit. Looks like Fat Bastard for some reason and was considered mildly insane by the rest of the legion, which is saying something.
*Ohthere Wyrdmake: Rune Priest who made friends with Ahriman only to screw him over at Nikaea by betraying his confidences as part of Russ' efforts to get the Librarius shut down. Ahriman tore his soul out during the fighting on Prospero.
*Logan Grimnar: Current Great Wolf of the chapter. Rides around in a wolf-drawn sleigh like grimdark Santa and is one of the most bro-tier Astartes in the Imperium, having squared up to the Inquisition and Grey Knights rather than let them purge a bunch of innocent civilians at Armageddon.
*Lukas the Trickster: Strong contender for the title of Galaxy's Best Troll. Has pulled off such feats of trolling as tricking a bunch of Word Bearers into landing on thin ice and drowning themselves, "accidentally" locking an Inquisitorial delegation in a grox pen, and fucking with Magnus himself during the Second Battle of Prospero. The Wolf Lords hate him because he's an irreverent dick, but Lukas couldn't give less of a shit about what they think of him. Is one of the few Space Marines known to have gotten laid. Has a stasis bomb wired into his chest where his second heart used to be (it got stolen by a Dark Eldar) so that whoever kills him will be frozen in time with his laughing face in front of them, forever.
*Ragnar Blackmane: Youngest Wolf Lord in the chapter's history. Has a long-running rivalry with Madox of the Thousand Sons and once hit Magnus right in the eye with the Spear of Russ. During the Psychic Awakening, he got into a fight with Ghazghkull that ended with Ragnar half-dead and Ghaz decapitated, but they both survived because plot armor. Ragnar got Primaris'd up and is after Ghaz for a rematch.
*Ulrik the Slayer: High Priest and oldest non-Dreadnought Space Wolf in the chapter. Still talks to Logan Grimnar like he's a snotty kid and once killed three Khorne Berzerkers so hard that Angron himself saluted his sheer RAEG. Wears Leman Russ' helmet into battle.
*Arjac Rockfist: Wolf Guard who has a thunder hammer that teleports back into his hand whenever he throws it, making him the grimdark Thor to Lukas' Loki and Logan's Odin.
*Bran Redmaw: Wolf Lord/Wulfen who can somehow control his transformation to some degree. Tends to go off by himself in battle so he doesn't wolf out and accidentally kill his own dudes.
*Canis Wolfborn: He is a Wolf Guard whose first name means Dog and rides a giant wolf and leads a pack of Fenrisian Wolves that he commands by barking at them and was raised by wolves and probably has a wolf plushie that he cuddles at night. Basically Canis is what happens when the Wolf part of Space Wolves is taken to its logical extreme. Also at one point he had a BS of 2, meaning that the average Ork could outshoot him.
*Murderfang: Wulfen Dreadnought who has to be kept in stasis between battles because he's batshit crazy and has lost the ability to tell friend from foe.
*Svane Vulfbad: Former Wolf Lord who decided that the Imperium sucked and led his entire Great Company into Khorne worship. May or may not be dead; he got into a fight with Harald Deathwolf and right when Harald was about to kill him, a thunderbolt hit them and Svane disappeared, leaving behind a fragment of his frost axe lodged in the jaw of Harald's Thunderwolf. Only appeared in a single issue of White Dwarf and has never been mentioned again ever, which is kind of a shame.

Daily rituals of a Space Wolf
08:00 - Early Risers - Most of the Wolf Scouts and Reivers, having avoided the last rounds the previous evening, wake from their quarters. They give each other quiet nods of approval, before heading for the festhall for an early breakfast. <br>
08:30 - Morning Firing Drills -- The Wolf Scouts and Reivers take advantage of the otherwise unoccupied firing range to get their drills in. The Lone Wolves are appreciative of the Primaris Vanguard stealth training, while Primaris marvel at Lone Wolves sniper marksmanship. <br>
9:00 - Wilderness Training - Wolf Scout squads leave for their regular wilderness patrols, while Reivers try to stalk them. Most of the day will be filled with one trying to track down the other, or stalking a particularly worthwhile prey. <br>
13:00 - Wake Up with Hangover - The majority of Space Wolves battle-brothers awaken by this point.<br>
13:10 - Morning Piss - The Space Wolf empties the alcohol that has accumulated in his bladder(s) in the Sacred Alcohol Excretion Grounds. (Doing so anywhere else is hazardous as space wolf urine is capable of corroding ceramite) <br>
13:11 - Morning Fart - The Space Wolf empties his intestines. Pissing without farting is like going to a holy site without praying to the Emperor, which is heresy.<br>
13:20 - Morning Piss Ends - The Space Wolves have finally finished urinating. The surrounding landscape is scorched with a aura of menace resembling nurgle’s rot.<br>
13:30 - Ritual of the Hair of the <s>Dog</s> Wolf - The Space Wolf now cracks open his first cold one of the day. The first of many. Cheerios may be consumed as well.<br>
13:45 - Firing Drills - The Space Wolf consumes another liter of alcohol before going out back and shooting empty beer bottles with his bolter. This takes place far away from the Alcohol Excretion Grounds, after that one time Brother Brynjolf accidentally lit his own piss on fire. an entire company had to spend 6 months in the sickbay until their hair grew back and they were thus fit to be seen in public again.<br>
14:00 - Freeze your Balls - The Space Wolf sheds his armor and most of his clothing to wander around Asaheim for an hour.<br>
15:00 - Feeding of the Land Raiders - Space Wolf observes a feast with his brothers in honour of the chapter's revered battle machines. Blood Claws are still wandering around outside naked in the snow not grasping that the Long Fangs and Grey Hunters beelined for the chow hall as soon as the claws were out of sight.<br>
15:30 - Boozing of the Land Raiders - No feast is complete without metric fucktons of liquor. Fenrisian Ale, beer, and if available bylestim blend are poured and scrubbed all over the most honoured of the chapter's war machines. Many still have bullet holes, sometimes allowing beer to get into the exhaust ports and make for kickass explosions later. Blood Claws are still wandering around outside naked in the snow.<br>
16:00 - Wolf your Wolf - Grey Hunters and older Space Wolves take this time to play with their favourite 4-legged companions. Any Blood Claw who's showed up by now is made a Grey Hunter.<br>
16:30 - Save the Blood Claws - Blood Claws are brought in from the cold. Most are frozen blue or black - and hungry for more.<br>
17:00 - Evening feast - Eat. Drink. Start brawls. The usual non-warzone Space Wolf thing.<br>
18:00 - Try to wake up Bjorn.<br>
18:10 - Give up, try to find something fun on the Vox Saga.<br>
19:00 - Night shitter break.<br>
20:00 - Night firing drills - Much to the Iron Priest's dismay, the Space Wolves practice writing their names in the snow with bolters. In runes. In the dark.<br>
21:00 - Ritual Intake of Narcotics and Purging of Testicles - bitches and blow.<br>
05:00 - Daily Rest - The Space Wolf passes out.<br>

A Quick Word Out of Character
The true reason for all this, is that, we at /tg/, in our pathetic, low-reaching mastery of comedy, have seen how idiotic it is that every goddamn Space Wolf codex unnecessarily uses the word "wolf" as a prefix or a suffix every 3rd sentence (similar to the Tyranid codex shoe-horning the prefix bio- into every 3rd sentence). Since /tg/ is an easily angered monster, not unlike an Angry Marine, we furiously attempt to link Space Wolves to furries (it's really fucking annoying), as we are as fucked up as Chaos Pretty Marines.

It has been established in the Horus Heresy series that the VI Legion doesn't employ the word "wolf" as much as they appear to do. Wolves are readily apparent in their motifs, such as Leman Russ's titles as "Wolf-King" and "Great Wolf," as well as in the formal name of the Wolf Guard, but it's not as overblown as it's made out to be. Apparently, whoever did the Fenrisian-to-Gothic translation made a few errors. First off, they don't call themselves "the Space Wolves." When speaking formally, they refer to themselves as the Vlka Fenryka, which we can look at a few ways. "Fenris" is easy, a reference to Fenrir from Norse mythology. "Vlka" has a couple options; if you walk it backwards through the Germanic Volk you get "Folk of Fenris". This supports a common theory on 1d4chan where a bunch of colonists landed on a planet, bred giant dogs from their great, great, grand-children (more on that in a minute) then thought, "You know what's better than planet Unicorn? Planet fucking Fenris". So the the Vlka Fenryka are literally the folk of Fenris. Alternately Vlka can be translated from Slavic to get the "Wolves of Fenris" again.

No matter what you conclude on, you get Dan Abnett using linguistics to reinforce his theme that the Space Wolves are misunderstood by the rest of the Imperium - calling the Space Wolves because of a mistranslated word. One could even argue they are actually called "Space People", would make sense since Ragnar referred to them as "Star warriors" in the William King novels and their Fenrisian Kaerl auxiliaries call them "sky warriors," but the lore from these novels has been left by the wayside so take that as you will. When speaking informally, they refer to themselves as "the Rout", solidifying their purpose as the Emperor's executioners (self-proclaimed)/snowflakes. Additionally, the post of "Wolf-Lord" is also a mistranslation, as they refer to their Company commanders as Jarl. Finally, they don't call their fortress-monastery the Fang, but rather the Aett, which can be literally translated as "clan home." There's also this in-universe meme "there are no wolves on Fenris." At all. This was started by one of the primarchs remarking that they should be called xenos, because they're natives of an alien planet, and it quickly morphed into a joke. As it turns out, this is literally true.

With regards to the Fenrisian wolves, the origin a little more freaky than expected: they're not wolves, but descendants of human-wolf mutants. Back when Fenris was first settled, the colonists had the Canis helix added to help them adapt to the harsh environment by adding wolf genes to their genetic-makeup. Unfortunately, it worked a little too well--the canix helix caused a number of settlers to degrade into wolfmen and wolfwomen. Following this, they bred and produced a new strain of wolf into the environment. So there are no wolves on Fenris. They're just the descendants of human mutants. Which might explain why, post-Heresy, only Fenrisians can become Space Wolves (assuming that's why the successor chapters couldn't handle Russ' gene seed).

So yes, naming the planet after the wolves means we really do just end up all the way back at Wolves of Wolves after all. Whelp.

Of course, that means that the Space Wolves are wearing pelts made of human skin, but lets not dwell on that - after all it's fairly common in the Imperium to wear human skulls... WolfyWolfWolf *BLAM*.

The Wulfen issue aka "Fucking Furries"
The blatant author favouritism annoys fans of the other chapters with "Dark Secrets". GW's treatment of the Wulfen makes it effortless for fans of other chapters to hurl Mary Sue accusations at them, unlike the Blood Angels and Dark Angels. The Wulfen are now out in the open; once they were exposed they get little (arguably no) punishment while the Inquisition and Grey Knights just "kept one eye open" (other eye still being swollen from the last time). The aforementioned chapters on the other hand have to keep their secrets from being found out by the Inquisition and the Imperium at large.

Despite the fact that Fallen Angels were paraded around on Terra, many would assume they were Ravenwing without their fancy bikes. While any claims of Dark Angels being the real traitors from the Fallen would have Guilliman retort back that they are full of shit (with more and longer words), as he knew exactly what The First was up to during the Horus Heresy with the exception the events that caused the destruction of Caliban. Of course, the Unforgiven would also be pissed if they found out if one of the predecessors of the Grey Knights killed a Dark Angel and were part of the reason their homeworld was destroyed and would demand censure.

The Blood Angels on the other hand have an infection similar to the Wulfen without mutating into some kind of half-human man-beast. The Red Thirst. The Blood Angels and their successors organize the afflicted into Death Companies who are lead by their Chaplains into killing Xenos and foul traitors. If they somehow survive the mutated Blood Angels are BLAMed or locked away until the next battle.

Both chapters send their traitors/mutants into battle to be used as cannon fodder. A much more grimdark action that would be in character for Space Marines. They wouldn't be the only chapters to have done this either. Instead of treating mutants as fellow warriors. Inserting noble bright into the setting where it doesn't belong. The same reasons that so many players also hated the Tau until GW retconned them into being more grimdark.

Making this all the more strange. In all likelihood Guilliman himself wouldn't see a problem with using mutated Space Marines as cannon fodder. Because he did so himself when he created the Moritats after combat exercises with the Raven Guard. So chances are he would side with the other two former Imperium Secundus Legions. Due to not only favoritism but he and the rest of the Imperium at large would find it strange that the Space Wolves do not.

If Guilliman ever found out about all three. He would most likely order The Fallen and Wulfen organized into Death Companies style formations as well. Something that the Dark Angels are more or less doing already. This would just make it official. The Space Wolves would look like the bad guys if they objected, putting them in a tough spot.

Why people hate the Space Wolves, tldr version
One user on reddit summed it up with this. (fixed for grammar somewhat)

"The Space Wolves remind me of a 13 year old’s first D&D character: very cool, special, powerful barbarian hero who is morally flawless but doesn't listen to authority and always does the right thing but don't you dare cross them. They get away with shit because they're so special and the rules don't apply to them, guys. They got to wage war on the Inquisition with a slap on the wrist, while the Celestial Lions were slaughtered for merely questioning the morals of the Inquisition. They get a free pass on mutation in a setting where that gets chapters purged. They drink and party while other chapters lose hundreds of brothers on meaningless, forgotten battlegrounds. They aren't even Vikings! The White Scars are Space Mongols. The Black Templars are Space Teutons. There are Space Rome. Space Egypt. Space Iroquois. But Vikings? No. They don't raid. They don't pillage. They don't terrorize. They don't explore, chart, map, and push boundaries. They just fuck around, being special, unique perfect little dudes who don't suffer in GrimDarkness.

They exist in the wrong game."

So basically Space Wolves now have the same problem as the Tau did a few editions back.

In defence of the Space Furries
Part of the problem with how the Wolves are seen by a lot of people in the community was created by how they were presented in older fluff.

As already stated GW really, REALLY overdid it in the past with the wolf theme (the Murderfang and Canis Wolfborn are clear examples), forgetting that the Wolves were supposed to be cool space vikings rather than a bunch of furries with more wolves than you could shake a choppa at. Their incredibly bipolar characterisation didn't really help; in one book they were noble warriors that sacrificed everything to protect those that couldn't defend themselves, and in another they were mindless savages with a thirst for blood to make a Bloodthirster pop a boner.

But recent Black Library stuff helped patch things up: in the Leman Russ book of the Primarchs novel series we actually get a pretty big hint on what tempered the Wolves more brutal side; sometimes in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy, Russ is shown speaking with the Emperor in a dream of sort, where the Wolf King asks his father's forgiveness for not having been there to save him, to which the Big-E simply reply by telling Russ that he had never been intended to protect Him, but rather what He had created.

This, and a conversation Russ has with one of his sons later on, is the usual not so subtle way of GW of telling us that what Russ himself did in the years before disappearing was working hard to set his Legion/Chapter on the path the Emperor wanted them and making sure that they became the defenders of the Imperium they were always meant to be.

Sure, it's the usual retcon operation on GW's part, but for once it is a pretty good one that adds even more depth to an already cool Chapter and helps getting rid of previous inconsistencies in the fluff.

Another point to consider when comparing the Wolves seeming status as "special kids" with other Chapters like the aforementioned Dark Angels and Blood Angels is the following: they're far from being the only Astartes Chapters to disregard or outright kick in the balls the Inquisition.

A quick example? The Dark Angels threatening to open fire upon a Black Templars' ship after the latter had managed to capture and imprison Cypher (again, the Black Templars GET. SHIT. DONE.), despite the Templars' extremely close ties with the Inquisition, (since, you know, they act as the part of the FUCKING ARMED WING OF THE ORDO HERETICUS). Yet, the Inquisition did not retaliate in any way and let the Angels of Caliban get away with this without any repercussion whatsoever. This is on top of the Dark Angels getting away with their "totally not a legion" shtick, despite the Inquisition coming down hard on other chapters for doing so, or all the times they've run off in the middle of critical battles (causing excessive casualties among allies) to pursue their own objectives.

In the Blood Angels case, their "fluff shield" from the Inquisition is more of a passive thing: Sanguinius is arguably the single most beloved Primarch in the eyes of the 41st Millennium Imperium's common population, so the Inquisition can't really move against them without heavily pissing off the common population and the Ecclesiarchy (since he's one of their most important Saints). And that's not even taking into account the way that almost every BA successor (possibly including other Astartes Chapters with alliances/honour debts) would immediately flip out against them, resulting in a bloody civil war that would eventually resolve with the Inquisition getting cyclonic torpedoes up their asses; in the end, it's a lot of work for little gain.

This isn't limited to the above two, either. The Iron Hands got away with straight-up treason and fully a third of their leadership (plus however many regular brothers turned out to be corrupted) falling to Chaos, despite the Imperium having repeatedly screwed over or excommunicated Chapters for far less. The Black Templars have gotten away with one of their crusades out-and-out MURDERING FUCKING CUSTODES and the Primaris Marines they brought as a gift, directly defying the Emperor's will in doing so. The Cursed Founding Chapters, despite several being mutated and all but stated to be from traitor stock, are still around despite the Inquisition booting Chapters for less severe stuff than that.

And even then, crucially, the Space Wolves don't come out unscathed when they clash with the Inquisition. Their most cited "Fuck you, Inquisition!" moment ended with the Fang being damaged, the Wolves fleet and manpower getting a kick in the balls, and the Inquisition actively researching methods of bringing them to heel, like tampering with their gene-seed and striking against them when the Chapter is too weak to resist. Warzone Fenris ended with their dark secret being revealed to the wider galaxy, their sole recruiting source being badly fucked up, and most of their homeworld's population being purged by order of the big =][= - all with the Wolves unable to do anything about it.

Furthermore, if one thinks about it, the Space Wolves extreme degree of independence and complete disregard of other imperial authorities completely makes sense, especially if one considers what was said before about Russ realizing the true purpose of his sons: out of all the loyalist Primarchs left at the end of the Horus Heresy, Russ was the one that stuck around the longest (yes, Vulkan was last seen in the 32nd Millennium, but he had left his Legion even before the end of the Heresy and left the Salamanders to their own devices for almost a thousand years, before reappearing for the War of the Beast), almost 200 years in which he properly instructed his sons to do everything in their power to keep the Imperium and its people safe, because THAT was the E-money's wish, so it only makes sense that they would tell an organization of questionable morality and purpose that throughout the millennia had seemed more interested in keeping their powers and privileges than in protecting the Imperium out of a sense of duty and that arbitrarily had BILLIONS shot, murdered and/or Exterminatus'd without anyone to actually control their actions to just go fuck themselves.

Sure, the Wolves are flawed as fuck, stubborn, hard-headed sons of a bitch, that would fight literally anything and everything to do what they think it's right, but that's more than likely what draws so many people to them in the first place and it is probably what basically makes them the most "human" out of all the Astartes, if not of the whole rundown shithole that is Warhammer 40000.

A Primaris Marine calls the Wolves out on their bullshit
In Dawn of Fire: The Wolftime, Logan is a dick to Guilliman and refuses to take reinforcements even after the furries got their assed kicked by Orks. One of the Unnumbered Sons promptly tells the Wolves that they're full of shit right to their hobo-stubbled faces, in a pretty awesome "You suck!" speech.

"You’re all vain, empty beasts. You talk of honour, of accounting the dead, of glory in battle but you are just inbred hounds rolling in the filth. You would all be ork-dead by now, if not for me and my brothers, but that’s not enough. I could bleed my last drop of blood for you, watch it freeze on your Emperor-abandoned drop-hole of a world and still you would not call me a Wolf of Fenris. [...]

You are nothing to the Rout of old," snarled Gaius. "A spent force, throwing yourselves at your enemies, shouting empty cries, bleating like sheep about Russ returning at the end. He would be shamed to see what had become of his sons! [..]

There’s nothing spiritual about it."
