History
The Novamarines are hardline followers of the Codex Astartes, the great organisational work of the Ultramarines Primarch Roboute Guilliman. So much so that "they have been known to take arms against those who disdain its strictures", as well as being noted as exemplars of Guilliman's writ by other Imperial authorities. This hardline attitude extends to other facets of Imperial thought, with the Novamarines being notable proponents of the monodominant philosophy; deviation from Imperial norms is considered anathema, with a particular disgust saved for xenos life-forms.

As strict adherents to the Codex their fighting philosophy is extremely similar to the XIIIth Legion of old, perhaps even more so than the Ultramarines of the 41st millennium. However, they are exceptionally willing to assist other Imperial forces at every chance they get. Most importantly, they maintain a well-equipped armoury which includes archeotech from previous eras such as the Great Crusade. The lack of depletion in ther war materiel suggests that the Novamarines might have originally been among the "Unmarked," one of the five chapters of the Ultramarines Legion that weren't present at the Battle of Calth (with their first Chapter Master, Lucretius Corvo, confirmed as not having been there in time according to a HH short story). They certainly were among the first to be separated and renamed at the time of the Second Founding.

Founding
The first Chapter Master of the Novamarines was Ultramarines Captain Lucretius Corvo, an officer who won great renown fighting the Word Bearers during the Horus Heresy. Corvo was decorated by Roboute Guilliman himself - this decoration is now a sacred relic to the Novamarines, and is kept in the Fortress-Monastery.

At their founding they were assigned the world of Honourum by Guilliman, a world that at one point had marked the farthest point the Ultramarines had penetrated into the galactic north of Ultima Segmentum during the Great Crusade. Said world was once a beacon of Imperial civilisation, but was razed by Lorgar and Angron as a prelude to their Shadow Crusade. The world was left in ruins for much of the Horus Heresy and its cities were picked apart by scavengers; its people eventually devolved to a feral state due to the trauma and horrors they had witnessed. Honourum was eventually recaptured by the Ultramarines and re-garrisoned, although the cities were left in their state of ruin.

Because they now recruit from feral societies, the only notable surface difference between a Novamarine and an Ultramarine is that the Novamarines retain the tribal practice of tattooing their skin, incorporating it into their beliefs as an Emperor-blessed way of armouring their souls, as well as recording their deeds upon their bodies.

Recent Years
The Novamarines have been notably involved with combating the emergent Tau life-form, though that does not mean they fight xenos exclusively: after two years of honourably participating in the Badab War the Novamarines forces withdrew in order to contest an Ork invasion that threatened their homeworld, although rumours suggest the Inquisition reassigned them in fear that they would not be enthusiastic enough when facing the secessionist forces.

Since then they have deployed a large amount of their manpower to aid in defending against the Thirteenth Black Crusade, as well as the Terran Crusade which took Gulliman from Macragge to Terra. When the Death Guard attacked the Macragge system, the Novamarines mobilized their force against the traitor Astartes. Their Chapter Master Bardan Dovaro was killed in the defense of the Star Fort Galatan.

Organisation
Often thought of as a fleet-based Chapter, the Novamarines still retain Honourum as their Homeworld, near the Ghoul Stars. Because of their homeworld's location, near a vast zone of unexplored space, the Novamarines fight a wide range of enemies, including lost human realms, nascent alien empires, and ancient threats. As a result, the Novamarines spend most of their time ranging through Imperial space, watching over the territory they have chosen to safeguard and responding to any Imperial call for aid. Their quick reaction times and willingness to unquestioningly help defend the Imperium have resulted in the Novamarines developing a record of being one of the first forms of aid other Space Marine chapters receive should they ask for it.

The Chapter maintains close links to the Ultramarines and its fellow Successor Chapters, but the great distance between Honourum and Macragge means that the Chapter is unable to send representatives to the court of Marneus Calgar as often as other Chapters. Still, many Novamarines aspire to make a pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Primarch at least once in their lifetimes, with those that have done such pilgrimage adorning their battle helmets with the Laurels of Ultramar, a mark of honour that the Chapter's Scouts regard with awe and dream of one day gaining for themselves. In sharp contrast with their secular views of Imperial religion, they consider the Codex Astartes to be a divinely-inspired work; ironically, this may technically be considered a deviation from the Codex, as its authorship is, in fact, well known. They never comment upon what deity might have inspired it, but the work is considered to be more than just a treatise on war, even if the Novamarines are not adherents of the Imperial Cult.

The Novamarines have been lucky enough to be able to maintain much of their original chapter armoury from the Great-Crusade era. As a result they are able to field their entire First Company as Terminators should they so wish. The Chapter also possesses a hefty supply of dreadnoughts as well as relics beyond the specific scope of the Codex Astartes, most likely mothballed vehicles like the Mastodon and Stormbird.

Characters
Mordeci Blaylock
They do have one special character of note from Forgeworld: Mordeci Blaylock, Captain of the Novamarines First Company.

He wears Terminator Armour, Iron Halo and has a Storm Bolter; (so far par for the course) but he also has a Master Crafted, Shredding, Armourbane Chainfist!

Also, he makes Terminator squads scoring (but not troops) though he does allow any unit he joins the ability to choose whether or not to pass morale checks, which is actually better than Fearless since you can't necessarily get tarpitted by things they can't hurt. But there isn't much that Chainfist can't hurt anyway. But you can also use it to fall back from shooting and claim a counter charge next turn.

Blaylock is also a badass, having earned the title "Stormbreaker" after defeating an Eldar Stormwind host, by trapping the Autarch's power sword in his ribs and then strangling the life out of him with his bare hands (though one must wonder why his hands were bare in the first place [Killed him without a weapon in hand, not with his gauntlets removed...]).

Daily Rituals
04:00 - Wake Up: The Novamarines awaken from their beds. They punch their doors off their hinges upon seeing xenos on it.

05:00 - Morning Prayer: The Novamarines gather to pray to the Emperor. The Chaplain usually makes it a point to spout litanies of hatred on the xenos.

06:00 - Day preparation: The Novamarines prepare for an arduous day in their terminator armor. During the boring process of fitting their armor, they watch DIY videos on how to kill xenos.

07:00 - Morning Firing Rites: The chapter serfs set up cut outs or live xenos targets for the battle brothers to shoot at. Battle brothers are encouraged to charge the xenos and slap them with any available melee weapon (Including other xenos if necessary).

08:00 - Morning Battle Practice: The Novamarines release their pet xenos from their cages in order to battle them. Hilarity ensues when Novamarines attempt to hit Eldar with their Thunder Hammers.

10:00 - Morning Meal: Finally killing the last of the Eldar, the Novamarines settle down to a light meal. Terminator armor is still worn, requiring the Chapter serfs to build chairs made of adamantium.

11:00 - Tactical Indoctrination: Novamarines are taught how to properly apply terminators to key weak points. Typically, this involves using an ancient battle simulator known as "Ravenwing". Shooting the screen when foul xenos appear is encouraged.

13:00 - Afternoon Meal: The chapter serfs finish cooking the last of the xenos that were killed earlier in the day. Only the younger battle brothers are permitted to eat, as they require energy to operate the terminator armor.

14:00 - Afternoon Battle Practice: The Novamarines practice Terminator spamming on T'au settlements. Bonus points for any battle brother that manages to kill a Fire Warrior from range. The capture of female T'au is prohibited.

17:00 - Evening Firing Rites: The Novamarines break out their heaviest weaponry and release Carnifexes onto the firing range. Younger battle brothers scream with glee as they proceed to shred the beasts down with amassed firepower from their terminators.

18:00 - Evening Meal: The Novamarines finally exit their terminator armor to enjoy a grand feast. All kinds of xenos meat is arranged. A favorite dish within the chapter is Ork Steak.

19:00 - Evening Prayer: The Novamarines pray to kill more xenos tomorrow. The chaplain will also award laurel to the brother who managed to kill the most xenos during the day.

20:00 - Free time: The Novamarines engage in recreational activities. Some favorites include mailing Eldar to the Eye of Terror, sending troll messages to the T'au Empire, and Kroot wrangling. Some battle brothers opt to have additional xenos combat training. Ancient relics of the chapter, such as "Halo: Combat Evolved", "Space Invaders", and "XCOM 2" are among the most widely used.

23:00 - Bedtime: The Novamarines return to their beds, but only after polishing their terminator armor.

23:45 - Door Installation: Upon the chapter masters' orders, the chapter serfs and servitors finish installing doors with varying types of xenos depicted on them. This helps test for chaotic possession, as any battle brother who does not punch the door clean off its hinges is clearly a heretic.

The Nemesis Chapter. Now that's a kickass name. Cool factor turned up to 11. Probably the only chapter with a name cooler than the mother fuckin' ass blasting Destroyers.

Anyways. What happens when you take a company of Destroyer Marines during the Great Crusade from a generic Legion and have them work with the Night Lords? You get the Nemesis Chapter. These guys have the potential to be awesome, if it weren't for the spot-light being cast on others at any given moment.

Anyways, the Nemesis Chapter was originally the 22nd chapter of the Ultramarines Legion. During the Great Crusade, this chapter was mainly composed of Terran-born Destroyers, the Marines whose standard-issue weaponry was considered "too cruel" to use on other humans even by the low standards of 40K. This meant that these guys used the most destructive weaponry that the Imperium could pull out at the time, with shit like rad missiles (if they didn't blow you up on the spot, you'd still die of space cancer) and phosphex grenades being the norm for them. Since such work wasn't used all the time, they were relegated to sitting back and waiting till their commanders said "Fuck it, nuke everything." Oddly, these guys wound up working with the VIIIth Legion during this time and became quite good at blowing up planets. Eventually, the 22nd started to dress up like the Night Lords until Roboute Guilliman put a stop to that. The chapter didn't quite like that, and especially after Emps made big blue burn up Lorgar's faith project, they had concerns that they would be next since because of the chapter's less-than-palatable existence and the fact that they didn't uphold the standards of their Ultramar-born brothers. However, once the Heresy broke out, the 22nd stayed true to their roots and remained loyalists. Hilariously enough, they were one of the few Ultramarines units that didn't get completely ass-blasted at the Battle of Calth; they'd been sent to a muster station far away from Calth's major population centers because of their volatile weaponry, so the Word Bearers didn't have the opportunity to demolish them like they did with the rest of the legion. After the Heresy, they were made into their own Chapter as a part of the Second Founding. As a reward, they were given a fucking Gloriana Class Battleship as their flag vessel. And not just any Gloriana Battleship, no. This was the Chronicle of Ashes, that was captured from the fucking Word Bearers. At least it was captured early on in M31, otherwise the amount of Chaos taint would've made it unsalvageable, and certainly a risk to the sanity of any loyal chapter. To this day, they still retain their dark history with a skull as their insignia.

Their last known engagement in the 41st Millennium is the Orphean War, where they joined Battlegroup Salvation in the later stages of the conflict alongside the Red Seraphs and Executioners. They have been tasked with establishing a cordon to prevent the Necron Maynarkh Dynasty to spread into the neighboring Euridyce sector.
The Mortifactors are a Chapter who REALLY do not get on with their forefathers, despite the fact that they follow the codex and are the second sons of the XIII Legion. Also they can be total dicks, leaving their allies if they don't feel like fighting for something that matters. They're cunts.

History
The differences between them are mostly cultural rather than doctrinal, and (like the Fenrisians) is more a result of the homeworld they decided to inhabit than anything else.

Posul is the stereotypical savage world, almost completely dark due to having a thick, smoky atmosphere, and is populated by cannibalistic tribal warriors who constantly wage war upon one another. This is probably contributed to by the fact that any night world will have little to no plant life, so the population would have to become carnivores and often cannibals by necessity, and like any world in the Imperium, humans are rarely in short supply. Never mind that this really wouldn't work because carnivores are far less energy efficient than herbivores or plants. And never mind this wouldn't work since ecosystems have to have producers at the bottom anyhow, and meat-eaters are just getting those nutrients secondhand. Posul probably had more fungus than plants, but the name of the bottom-producer doesn't particularly matter here. <s>(There are no plants or Fungi in the arctic or the bottom of the sea and those places function fine with exclusively carnivore.)</s> Fungus is a possibility, though there are plants in the arctic, sort of: phytoplankton floating in the water absorb sunlight and perform photosynthesis, creating energy, then get eaten by zooplankton, which are eaten by bigger animals, and so on, and majority of seafloor subsists on whatever falls down from the surface. Hydrothermal vents would be a better example; there's stuff down there that can get energy using chemical reactions instead of sunlight so maybe that's what's going on on Posul. In that case you would have something like a landbound version of the giant tube worms that live around sea vents, which would be either pretty metal or very gross. Or both.

Their chapter Fortress-Monastery is a massive space station that orbits the planet. Its halls are filled with rows of engraved skulls, the final resting place of fallen brothers - while the chapels and shrines of the chapter are filled with the skulls of enemies who have been defeated.

Very peculiarly, the Chaplains of the Mortifactors are chosen exclusively from the shamans of Posul, which is probably a massive contributory factor to the behaviour of the chapter. Their typical rites involve copious amounts of blood-letting and shared blood drinking, where the enhanced physiologies of the Astartes will interpret the combination of visions to determine future battle plans.

Furthermore, once a battle has been won, they will go amongst the fallen enemies and consume portions of their flesh (presumably where it is safe to do so) before collecting the skulls of worthy foes to return to the chapter. To outsiders this makes them little better than extreme savages at best and outright Heretics at worst. (Of course, the Omniphagus organ that space marines possess allows them to gain tactical information from feeding on fallen foes. While few chapters do so as openly, fewer still are the chapters that do not partake at all.)

Apparently, they had very little contact with the other successor Chapters, being generally treated with suspicion but little outright antipathy. The full extent of their differences only really came to light when Uriel Ventris fought alongside them against the Tyranids, much to the disgust of the Ultramarines. However on that occasion the Mortifactors had the backing of the Inquisition and so nothing was settled between the chapters.

Lastly, their current Chapter Master is Lord Magyar ("Magyar" being the Hungarian word for, well, Hungarian). Lord Magyar is noticeable for wearing artificer armour crafted entirely from bones. He also carries a war scythe and features a winged skeletal familiar perched atop his throne. Most Astartes estimate Lord Magyar to be around 700 years old, but nobody is really sure. In short, this guy knows how to reap a bountiful harvest of death, and has the gear to show for it. In fact, the Mortifactors seem to be pretty damn good at killing shit. They really put the "Death" in "Angels of Death".

Another notable figure from the Mortifactors chapter is Watch Captain Artemis.

Relics
One controversial relic the Mortifactors owned was Roboute Guilliman's combat knife, though it remains unknown how they came to possess it. It caused them no end of trouble because the other successor Chapters would protest that such deviants were holding a relic of their primarch. Guilliman himself would probably be incapable of comprehending why anyone would give a damn about a knife.

It was only when the Lord of Macragge interceded that the Mortifactors gave up the relic. But rather than surrender it to the Ultramarines or any other descendant of Guilliman, they trolled the Ultramarines by entrusting it to the Deathwatch for safe-keeping instead, where it might be still used by Mortifactors who swear oaths to the Ordo Xenos. Ironically, regardless of their true origins, Guilliman is the sort of person who would rather his wargear be used for humanity than kept in a vault or museum or whatever.

Canon Conflict?
In a bit of strange, fucked up idiocy, Posul was declared as having been destroyed by Hive Fleet Leviathan as of 997.M41. This would mean the Mortifactors lost their home-world only a year prior to their largest deployment. With their fielding of all 10 companies in 998.M41 at the Third War for Armageddon, it begs to be asked if perhaps the Chapter had resigned themselves to a glorious death on the fields of battle rather than restore their chapter and continue fighting for the Emperor. On the one hand, it would make tons of sense if this were the case, as the Mortifactors have a very strong set of beliefs regarding the afterlife - namely, that their dead get to feast with "the Ultimate Warrior" (a divine being that inhabits the perfect body for fighting prowess, which could very well be the Big E pre-Heresy (or maybe he is that other Ultimate Warrior)) in the Hall of Victors. On the other hand, these dates are always subject to some revision, thanks to Games Workshop's dubious stance on canon consistency.

Also there's that Deathwatch short story where their Chapter Master gets decapitated by an Eldar witch so...
History
The <s>Liberators</s> Libators have an... interesting chapter history. They pull a reverse Star Phantoms, being well-documented as a member of the Ultramarines Second Founding chapters but having almost no notable engagements or alliances before Roboute Guilliman awoke and called them out.

Most recently, they dispatched two companies to Maccragge to defend against the Death Guard and have three companies on crusade with the Black Templars and aforementioned Star Phantoms to clear the Karthago sector, who due to the Castigation of Sidon Ultra (Badab War reparations which included the 14 billion population of the Sector's capital being identured into servitude for six generations), was in no condition to repel attacks from Ork Pirates. Of those two companies they sent to fight in the Plague Wars, one had to be redirected to Damnos of all places. The Ultras were enraged, thinking the Sautekh Dynasty had come to challenge them for a third time, but it turned out these necrons were Szarekhan.

Chapter Iconography
The chapter's name comes from the word "libation", which means "a pouring out of liquid (usually an alcoholic beverage) or grain as an offering to a deity or to the dead". This is an ancient practice that has appeared in many different cultures and even continues to be practiced today. It even appear in media often enough to have a TVTropes page. But until 8th Edition, nothing was known about their practices so one could interpret the name in several ways.

The mystery has been officially unveiled in the "Indomitus" Space Marine Codex for 8th Edition. Apparently, their name and iconography stem from their habit of letting their enemies' blood as a tribute to both their Primarch and the Emperor, a fact that has led them to be known as some of the most brutal Ultramarine successors. They have a tendency to reserve the worst treatment for enemy champions and leaders, as these are seen as the worthiest offerings of all (reason for which they incurred in several censures during various occasions).

Tl;dr: Khorne-flavored Ultramarines. Might be interesting to have some details on some of their earlier campaigns... I mean, can every one of these guys have remained uncorrupted by the touch of the Blood God, when we have plenty of traitor marines hailing from, say, the Sons of Guilliman?
Oh but we CAN be Ultramarines!

The Genesis Chapter (also known as the Ultramarines reserve team) is generally held to be the closest of the Ultramarines’ Successors, both doctrinally ,astrographically, and historically; given it was founded out of the Legion Veterans that survived the Horus Heresy. Which sounds like a retarded way to make a Chapter and, wait, weren’t all Marines veterans of the Horus Heresy? So, maybe this explains the Rogue Trader Ultramarines. The Chapter holds to the wisdom of the Codex Astartes in every possible way. The Chapter’s home world of Newfound is a neighbour of the Ultramarines’ Realm of Ultramar, and its brothers commonly undertake at least one pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Primarch whilst popping over for tea and sugar. Given it's a second founding chapter, its first chapter master must've been someone important during the Heresy.

The Chaplains of the Genesis Chapter regard the Codex Astartes as utterly sacrosanct, and they go to great lengths to ensure the Chapter’s adherence to its tenets. Any points of contention are debated thoroughly, with recourse to the opinions of the Ultramarines’ Chaplains for final ratification in order to ensure there is no doctrinal drift between Progenitor and Primogenitor whatsoever. So in essence whatever the Spiritual Liege orders; the Genesis Chapter will follow blindly, since if they cannot decide an action, they'll check with the Ultramarines to make a decision.

Because the Genesis Chapter maintains such close links with its Progenitor, the two Chapters frequently cruise through the stars together, looking for battles/hoes/Codex deviants to bully. Genesis Chapter squads routinely fill gaps in Ultramarines’ companies should they fall below codex strength due to battle losses or other commitments. Individual Genesis Chapter Battle-Brothers have even been seconded to the Ultramarines to temporarily fill empty specialist positions in the Ultramarines Chapter such as Librarius and Forge staff. and what do they get in return? FUCK ALL that's what.

If proof were ever needed to show that the Ultramarines were in breach of their own limitations on chapter size set down in the Codex Astartes, the Genesis chapter would be it as they are essentially an entire spare chapter for the Ultramarines to use as private reserves and can ensure (unlike some other chapters) that they never have to undergo a long painful period of rebuilding after a brutal campaign, and thus retain their Mary Sue status.

The Genesis Chapter itself, however, did get out played by some Night Lords during the early parts of the 13th Black Crusade. Seeking to stop the Night Lords from landing on a planet, a cruiser launched its drop pods while still in orbit, looking to use them as makeshift boarding torpedos and storm the bridge. However, the Night Lords instead had laid a trap and decided to blow up half of the orbiting moon to take out the cruiser after killing the marines who had boarded their own Strike Cruiser. inside. To be fair, they did give a pretty good account of themselves. They only possessed a few squads led by a veteran sergeant and they managed to take half of the Night Lords with them. Not to mention said veteran sergeant took on the entirety of First Claw and killed Xarl, one of its most fearsome members. ((Said veteran sergeant was also a company champion and in a terminator suit with a thunder hammer, fighting against marines with power armour that looked like someone assembled it from 5 different armour sets, which is good as it makes this event very believable and prevents Mary Sueness)) The moon blowy-upyness just goes to show how powerful 40k is.

TL;DR: Ultramarines reserve team.

Daily Rituals
04:00 - Wake Up: The Genesis Chapter rise up from their sleep in their faux marble-encased sleeping chambers. They show a live feed of Guiliman, who has already been awake for some time, having lost the need for sleep as a side effect of his revival.

04:30 - Morning Prayers: The Genesis Chapter conduct morning prayers on why they are the SECOND TO THE ULTRAMARINES! and how all other chapters should view the Ultramarines as the best stuff evah!

05:30 - Codex Astartes: The Genesis Chapter are indoctrinated and reminded on the rules and values of the Codex Astartes. The news of Codex revisions causes them to go into conniptions.

08:00 - Morning Firing Rites: The Genesis Chapter enter target practice with spiritual guidance from the Chaplain. However, their shock over the changes to the Codex cause them to often miss their targets.

09:00 - Battle Practice: The Genesis Chapter leave for Newfound's Colosseum to train against each other, the local Newfound fauna, and Battle Servitors.

10:00 - Morning Meal: While later than some chapters, the Genesis Chapter feast upon a light meal made of fruits, biscuits and light meat by the Chapter serfs. The serfs are thanked soon afterwards in a manner of respect.

10:15 - Tactical Indoctrination: The Genesis chapter attempt to barge into Ultramar to see the latest battle plans and which military techniques that can best complement the Codex Astartes. The Ultramarines respectfully tell them to butt out and find something better to do.

10:30 - Prayers to the Spiritual Liege: Whilst the rest of the Genesis Chapter practice reciting the Codex Astartes, the leaders from each of the Chapter's companies discuss political, social and military affairs of Newfound and the Imperium at large.

11:00 - Afternoon Wargames: The Genesis Chapter conducts miniature wargames to best simulate strategic and combat play which can be learned and adapted in real life combat. However, they almost always play the small blueberries with powerful ranged attacks.

13:00 - Midday Meal: A light meal of cheese, bread, meats and vegetables is prepared by the Chapter serfs.

13:30 - Codex Astartes: More indoctrination of the Codex Astartes is read to ensure that the Genesis Chapter never diverge from the book of Guilliman. However, they often recite verses wrongly, causing them great distress.

15:00 - Evening Firing Rites: The Genesis Chapter enter target practice. Their aim still sucks, due to their guilt of not memorizing the Codex Astartes.

16:00 - Battle Practice: The Genesis Chapter are now dropped into the wilderness of Newfound to fend off the local fauna and flora there. The animals and plants killed are sent to the Chapter Serfs for more ingredients.

17:00 - Evening Prayers: The Genesis Chapter gather together to pray on why they are the chosen chapter and why the Newfound System is the best system.

18:00 - Nighttime Firing Rites: The Genesis Chapter take target practice in the night to further hone in their <s>lack of</s> nocturnal experience.

19:00 - Battle Practice: The Genesis Chapter descends to Ultramar to fight the planet's local fauna and flora, as well as the various nasty things Nurgle has been attacking Ultramar with lately. They also thank the Emperor for allowing them to be there.

19:30 - Daily Medical Checkup: Whilst the rest of the Genesis Chapter are busy practicing their combat prowess, the long hours of having to keep said Chapter away has left Roboute Guilliman in a state of dismay, anger and minor facial injuries due to repeated facepalming. Apothecaries try and fail to warn their Primarch that continued usage of the facepalm will eventually give the Avenging Son a concussion. Any battle-brothers who have come into contact with the forces of the Genesis Chapter are painstakingly decontaminated to prevent the spread of any nerd obsession.

20:00 - Evening Meal: A feast made from the creatures slain by the Genesis Chapter earlier on is cooked in the finest ingredients. Cooking it perfectly gets the serf a purity seal of cooking while cooking it imperfectly forces the serf to be read the entire Codex Astartes section on how to be a spiritual liege.

21:00 - Cleaning up shop: The Genesis Chapter go and clean up the signs they were on Macragge. They also return home to Newfound.

22:00 - Free Time: The Genesis Chapter get free time. Some continue to read the Codex Astartes, others pray to the Emperor while some go out of their Fortress Monastery to catch up on the local news and political affairs as well as hanging out with the citizens of Newfound.

24:00 - Rest Period: The Genesis Chapter return to their faux marble-encased sleeping chambers to rest. Guilliman breathes a sigh of relief as he is no longer pestered by those fanboy nerds.

<s>Wait a minute! This is just the daily rituals for the Ultramarines with a few adjustments!</s> *BLAM!* Heresy! this is a unique Daily ritual.

Relics
In the Deathwatch there is a hallowed tome referred to as Tulius Insight. To which battle brothers from stricter chapters are directed to if they are having difficulty adjusting from Codex Astartes doctrines to the much looser freedoms allowed by the Ordos Xenos. Angry Fuckin Vampires. They were originally a crusading chapter like the Black Templars, but decided to set up their fortress on Catachan 2: Electric Boogaloo, otherwise known as Cretacia. They came to this decision after their scout company was eaten by bugs. Interesting note about Cretacia, the people there are born with two hearts. How this changes the transformation of kids into Space Marines is unknown, but presumably the second heart is grown to space marine size instead of being replaced, thus saving a step of having to add in the second heart. Also, Cretacia comes from the word "Cretaceous", so yeah, fucking dinosaurs. More hardcore in general than the Blood Angels, since they've all got a bad case of Geneseed AIDS, probably from drinking a thousand gallons of blood from Slaanesh followers every week or trying too hard to be cool, that results in a higher number of marines getting the Black Rage than other chapters. Due to insanity and since rushing at everyone without rhinos (Or deepstriking an entire company of rhinos, predators, and assault marines onto a planet to run straight over/through a living wall of tyranids) is decidedly pants on head insane, they've only got around 400 Spess Mehreens to call on (thus they have only about four mixed companies they deploy mainly as demi-companies known as Vanguard Strike Forces) and <s>most</s> all of them are bugshit nuts. You might suppose that this situation would make them wax emo like the Blood Angels sometimes do, but they cope by rushing at heretics and drinking their blood after they're done chainfist fucking them.

Let's put it this way: in the Third War for Armageddon, the Orks of the Fire Wastes were so horrified by the savage brutality of the Flesh Tearers that they would retreat rather than fight these psycho-motherfuckers.

The only wangsty member is the Chapter Master Seth, who wants his chapter to be the good guys which is unfortunately difficult when the Black Rage drives them insane all the time and leaves them (Seth included) perpetually angry, but even he usually just shrugs and slaughters a few thousand civilians to make himself feel better, for the Emprah of course. This pissed off the Space Wolves and Salamanders quite a bit due to their fanatical devotion to defending the helpless of the Imperium. However Seth told Logan Grimnar and Tu'Shan to piss off when they confronted him about it. Their battle cry is described as an inarticulate scream that freezes the pansy enemies of the Emprah with fear, it probably sounds something like FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-. They may be more than a little gay for their Serrated blades.

In summary, NO FUCKING SPARKLES *BRBRBZZZZZZZZZZZZ*

Again, in summary; they're a fucking Khornate Cult except they call him "The Emperor" instead of Khorne. The fact they are still considered loyalists at all is mind-boggling. They've been outright called heretics on numerous occasions, but presumably every time people start asking questions they get an unexpected case of "missing limbs". Thanks to Seth's latest strategy of pointing them where the chances of collateral damage are minimal, they're slowly becoming more accepted by the Imperium at large, so at least they're trying? Perhaps a certain other Blood Angel successor chapter wasn't.

The Blood Angels and their successors took them to trial (before the Shield of Baal campaign but after most other events in the fluff where they ended up killing Imperial members) depicted in the novella, "Trial by Blood", where after going through almost every established fluff case where the Flesh Tearers ripped and teared beyond what's normally healthy or sane, actually voted to disband the Flesh Tearers and absorb them piecemeal into other Blood Angel chapters. Astorath, however, stepped in and convinced Dante to overturn the verdict because as bad as the Flesh Tearers were, they were still merely at the further end of the scale than all Blood Angel chapters, who all had the Black Rage, were. They were still no where near as bad as the sick fucks and abominations the sons of Sanguinius were at war with, and winnings wars required getting shit done, which the Flesh Tearers excelled at. This trial and the overturn are interesting details as they, along with several other examples, indicate the Legion is still internally organized. Though, seemingly more as a brotherhood organization (or a fraternity) than a Legion, there is the detail Dante could overturn the vote which in turn implies a lot more to their inter-Chapter relations than the Inquisition might be comfortable with. Or it could just be that Dante is that well respected, especially amongst the various sons of Sanguinius. The functional result is the same either way and there are several Blood Angels also immensely revered who could do the same, as could members of any Chapter’s Sanguinary Guard seeing as each is an utterly amazing hero. The Inquisition probably wouldn’t care about the distinction but probably is also too busy hero-worshipping Dante to call them out. And throwing accusations at Sanguinius’s legion probably is a good way to get one’s self torn apart by an angry mob what with his importance to the Imperial Cult.

Seth became total bros with Dante later on during the Blood Angels civil war when they came to an understanding about each other, and the Flesh Tearers fight at the front alongside the Blood Angels in the Baal campaign, even saving some Sisters of Battle (which might contrast with how some Sisters of Battle called for their excommunication when Flesh Tearers caught in the throes of the Black Rage slaughtered Imperial forces on Armageddon). Also, they have a book by Andy Stiller that's simply called "Flesh Tearers".

Chapter Tactics
The Flesh Tearers have a very different relationship to the Red Thirst than many other Blood Angels chapters. Compared to the regular Blood Angels who strive for honorable perfection and the ability to overcome the Black Rage and the Red Thirst, the Flesh Tearers decide to just go with it and be angry vampiric murdererhobos. This leads many of them (including their vehicles, from their Rhinos to their Battle Barge: <i>Victus,</i>) to want to charge straight into the enemy and chainsaw them into bits. This strategy seems to generally work, but is also probably why many of them end up dead. Attrition rates from combat and Black Rage are so high that as of M41 they are barely able to keep about 400 marines battle ready at a time. When Gabriel Seth came along he spent a lot of his time re-working how the chapter deployed and strategies for combat.

The Flesh Tearers mainly deploy as a very aggressive fast attack force, forgoing defense for all out offense or counter-attack strategies and close combat offensives. Although the Chapter does not have many vehicles compared to other chapters (mainly due to the same reasons they don't have many marines) they do make plenty of use of Rhinos, Stormravens, and Predators in their offensives for fast transport and heavy fire support, along with having a decent amount of dreadnoughts as well (they probably don't have trouble keeping a decent number of those things ready due to that whole "high casualty rate" thing). Vehicles being mostly crewed by the coldly logical Tech-Marines no doubt helps immensely to provide covering fire and destroy anything actually capable of threatening a Space Marine. The chapter does also manage to keep a small group of Chaplains, Librarians, and Sanguinary Priests as well who fill generally the same role as those in other Blood Angels successor chapters. They also have a very heavy preference towards chain weapons (notably chainaxes), power swords, and lightning claws, which should surprise absolutely no one.

With so few marines and so many xenos and traitors to kill, Seth was forced to forgo Astartes companies and instead created demi-companies known as 'Vanguard Strike Forces' which have a Vanguard Veteran squad lead three squads of tacticals, a squad of assault marines, and a Furioso into combat. This set up allows for the Flesh Tearers to deploy smaller groups of marines into more places while still having a command structure, as there are so few Flesh Tearer Captains to lead the chapter. With these strike forces as teeth combined with their rapid mobility, the entire Chapter resembles a chain blade.

On the tabletop, the 'Shield of Baal: Exterminatus' Rules give a Flesh Tearer supplement. The two main additions are the ability to deploy six units of fast attack (for assault spam) and that rolls of 10+ to charge makes your marines RAGE!

Following the Devastation of Baal the majority of the Chapter consists of Primaris Marines, as Guilliman would prefer the chapter still exist. These forces presumably fight in normal Primaris squads and formations.

Notable members
*Nassir Amit: Nicknamed 'The Flesh Tearer' by his peers. Originally Captain of the 5th company of the Blood Angels' Legion; when he got promoted to Chapter Master he just gave them his nickname. Amit originally got the nickname 'Flesh Tearer' from Khârn (of all people) when he saw how scary the dude was in the World Eaters' recreational gladiator pits, and just how generally bloodthirsty and angry he was even before the death of Sanguinius really made that a thing. A lot of his actions could be argued why the Flesh Tearers went down the spiral path to angst town. On the flip side, the guy REALLY hates a certain spiritual liege. To the point that he told Bobby that his Codex and breaking apart the remaining Legions was a stupid idea. Straight up to his face. While not being a Primarch himself. And that was after Guilliman already punched him in the gut for saying it a first time ten seconds before. In battle he wears Terminator armour with dual Chainfists with storm bolters mounted to the wrists. As a final note he is known to kill Serfs near him just because he had not killed something in the last five minutes... though on the other hand he is known to be brutally honest and hating to lie about things (like he was disgusted when he was forced to cover up the first time the genetic curses manifested in one of the Blood Angels Legion companies that resulted in butchered Space Wolves). The guy makes The Hulk look like a zen master. He's basically the canonical inspiration for Temperus Maximus, down to armaments.
*Gabriel Seth: "The Guardian of Rage" is the current Chapter Master with a XBOXHUGE S8 AP4 chainsword, with rending. Also, in 5th edition, if you rolled a 1 in close combat against him, he kicks you in the fucking balls. He is a lot more diplomatic than his previous Chapter Masters (especially compared to Amit) but in combat he is still just as much of a maniac as his brothers. His 7th edition rules give him Furious Charge, Rage, and Rampage as a Warlord Trait, along with getting an extra hit for every 6 he gets in close combat, showing that leading the Flesh Tearers does require you to be so angry that even Khorne tells you to chill.

Daily Rituals
*06:00 - Morning Rising: The Flesh Tearers awaken from their hammocks to the sound of their Astartes pattern alarm clocks going off before being promptly smashed by their fists or thrown at a wall, at a nearby chapter serf, or through a nearby chapter serf.
*06:15 - Revelry: In order to rouse the brothers, ancient classical Terran music is played to motivate and rally the Flesh Tearers for the day. Popular listening tunes include the M3 songs "Raining Blood" by Slayer, "Hammer Smashed Face" by Cannibal Corpse, and anything on this playlist by Mick Gordon.
*07:00 - Grooming: The Flesh Tearers try to groom themselves for the morning ahead... using their chainswords as toothbrushes and power axes as razors to groom themselves in the most metal way imaginable.
*8:00 - Morning Firing Rites: The Flesh Tearers will go out and gun down whatever flora and fauna that happens to think it's big and bad eneough to take on the toughest most rage-filled sons of Sanguinius this morning.
*9:00 - Morning Combat Manoeuvres on Cretacia: Apparently the jungles didn't learn its lesson earlier. For the next hour, marines will dispense with ranged weaponry and use chainswords, chainaxes, chainglaives, bare-fisted badassery and the occasional club, to fight whatever plant, titan-sized dinosaur or giant bug that Cretacia has thrown at them today. The carcasses (or sticky red paste) will be gathered up by chapter serfs to be prepared.
*10:00 - Morning Meal: Assuming they haven't been scooped up by giant alien pterodactyls or eaten by velociraptors, a meal will be prepared by the chapter serfs consisting of meats, grains, plants or eggs.
*11:00 - Morning Prayer: The Flesh Tearers will gather to give thanks to the Emperor and the Primarch Sanguinius lead by the chaplains. Emphasis will be put on why the Primarch was such a badass and why they should emulate his example. To the uninitiated this will sound like a bunch of Tusken raiders passing a kidney stone.
*12:00 - Midday Meal: A second meal will be prepared for the chapter. This time it is less formal: an entire grox is lowered down by a crane from above before being torn to pieces by hungry battle-brothers.
*13:00 - Tactical Indoctrination: The Flesh Tearers will gather to learn where, when and how they will fuck shit up today and if they'll be serving with any Imperial meatbags. Emphasis will be put on maximum damage; any death companies that manage to land on orphanages or hospitals are referred to as "oopsie doodles". The use of the Codex Astartes is encouraged-- as a makeshift club to beat the enemies' brains in with!
*14:00 - Company and Command Level Chewing Out: Due to the number of innocent casualties caused by the Flesh Tearers, company commanders often have to call in loose cannon battle-brothers, telling them how "They're damn good marines but the planetary governors have been riding my ass because you drove a spartan assault tank through his front window." Relegating them to desk duty or pairing them up with more level-headed marines usually goes about as well as you'd think for an army of rage-fueled space marines.
*15:00 - Battle Practice: The battle-brothers gather to let off steam in the practice cages. Due to a shortage of combat servitors the Flesh Tearers make due with whatever local predators they captured earlier; typically this resembles an electrified steel cage match with meat-eating therapods. Many battle-brothers remember the day fondly when Chapter Master Seth piledrove a T-rex off the top of the practice cage and onto the desk of some chapter serfs.
*16:00 - Mandatory Bond with a Primaris Hour: The Flesh Tearers, having reluctantly accepted new Primaris Marines into the Chapter, take this time in an attempt to bond with (much to Chapter Master Seth's continuing irritation) and be civil (by Flesh Tearer standards) to the new marines. Trying not to punch their new brothers' heads in or throw them out of a Thunderhawk for being arrogant dicks has proven... difficult, especially for Chapter Master Gabriel Seth. Typical bonding sessions usually start with tea and end with something that looks like a cross between the Battle of Thermopylae and a soccer riot. This usually lasts about an hour.
*17:00 - Evening Prayer: The Flesh Tearers give thanks to the Emperor for having more dinosaurs to piledrive, beat, and stomp and also pray for more flesh to tear and that their power armored boot might find its way up some Khornate daemon ass. They also give thanks to how awesome they are and how good they looked using high explosive ammunition in that elementary Schola Progenium last week.
*18:00 - Night-Time Hand-to-Hand Manoeuvres: The Flesh Tearers will ritually bathe in barbecue sauce or tangy sweet and sour sauce, before marching out into the long grass wearing nothing but chainfists to engage Cretacia's nighttime predators (they're usually about 6 feet tall, hunt in packs, can open doors and have blades on their feet for slicing), with the winner getting to eat the loser!
*19:00 - Evening Meal: The chapter serfs will prepare a meal made of the loser (usually the dinosaurs) and extra emphasis is put on extra dipping sauces; failure to provide sufficient dipping sauces will see the chapter serfs used as the next meal. Occasionally dinosaurs will wander into the kitchen looking to eat chapter serfs; the standard protocol is to lock them in the freezer or tell a member of the chapter he can have seconds.
*20:00 - Screaming/Shouting Contests: Anyone who wants to challenge Chapter Master Seth to a shouting/screaming contest can now attempt to do this. This usually sounds like a bunch of Klingons going into labor.
*21:00 - Maintenance Rituals: The Flesh Tearers gather to fix their wargear and equipment. Special emphasis on chainfists and chainswords.
*22:00 - Daily Apothecary Checkups: The Flesh Tearers will be checked up by the Apothecary for signs of the Black Rage or Red Thirst or other mutations. Anyone found with this will be sent to the death company; any battle brother who says "I've got dino DNA!" will find himself given a class 4 prostate exam by the chapter's one working combat servitor!
*23:00 : Roundup: Any loose dinosaurs are rounded up and killed by the Flesh Tearers-- with their bare hands.
*24:00 : Bedtime: The Flesh Tearers will retire to their hammocks for rest before starting the day anew. Replacement alarm clocks will have been issued.

The Fists Exemplar were a Second Founding chapter of the Imperial Fists Legion, made up of those brothers who most closely embraced Guilliman's Codex Astartes.

History fails to mention them after M32 however, and by the time of 40k they are utterly unheard of, not even counting amongst the Second Founding successors of Imperial Fists, for they became the Imperial Fists at the end stages (read: when good'old Slaughter Koorland died Manly). A company of them also defected to the Iron Warriors, leading Chapter Master Thane to wipe all knowledge of their existence, being the very first ever Chapter created after the First Founding to fall to Chaos.

History
When Rogal Dorn teetered on the brink of a second civil war with his own brother over the need to break up his Legion, not all Imperial Fists agreed with him. One Captain: Oriax Dantalion spoke out in favour of the new codex, which unfortunately brought him the enmity of his own Primarch.

Thankfully, when Dorn finally came to realize that it wasn't worth fighting over, he rewarded Dantalion with a chapter of his own, who would be the "Exemplars of the new Order", while the zealous crusading types went with Sigismund to form the Black Templars, the youngest and most liberal (by Astartes standards and grimdark) went with Alexis Pollux to form the Crimson Fists, the most attrition specialists who fought on the walls of Terra became Excoriators while Dorn kept his closest few for himself in the Imperial Fists.

The Fists Exemplar were given a star fort: the Alcazar Astra and were tasked with patrolling a mini Eye-of-Terror called the Rubicante Flux and kept the region safe from traitor space marines and pirates who popped out every now and then.

That was until a warp flare up caught the star fort and forced it to land on the planet Eidolica, where it beached and became a land bound fortress monastery because no-one in the Mechanicum knew how to fix those types of engines.

544.M32 War of the Beast
See here.

The next Imperial Fists
Before The War of the Beast series was completed, there was a theory among fans about the Fists Exemplar and the Imperial Fists. It ran something like this:

"There is little to no mention of the Fists Exemplar in the fluff outside of the Beast Arises series, which took place on 544.M32. During this war, the Imperial Fists chapter itself was reduced to a single Battle-Brother following the initial Ork invasion of Ardamantua, leaving the Phalanx near abandoned and the Chapter practically extinct.

However, the Imperial Fists are noted to have been involved in The Beheading in 546.M32, meaning they somehow made a miraculous recovery. Which is not feasible given the short space of time with which to culture new gene-seed and train marines. Not only that, but captain Maximus Thane has purportedly inscribed his name on Dorn's skeletal hand; an honour usually reserved for Imperial Fist chapter masters.

That, coupled with the Fists Exemplars lack of recognition elsewhere seems to suggest that the Exemplars neatly replaced their parent Chapter in history, as the Imperium would likely not publicly allow a First Founding chapter and the protectors of Terra to fall in such ignominy."

This was outright confirmed in Shadow of Ullanor, which reveals that the Fists Exemplar formed the core of a "reborn" Imperial Fists chapter made up of the greatest Marines from all the successor chapters. This was a measure deemed necessary by Thane, who recognised the disastrous signal that the wholesale destruction of a First Founding Chapter (and the Protectors of Terra, at that!) would send.

So, you might ask, if only the best marines from the successors went into the "new" Imperial Fists, where the fuck did the rest of them go?

Well, not all the Fists Exemplar were present at Terra. A detachment under their First Captain, Zerberyn, was away from Terra at the time this decision was made; weakened and cut off from the Imperium, they were forced to ally with the Iron Warriors of all people against the Beast's seemingly unstoppable Ork hordes. During this time, Zerberyn actually came to see the sense in some of the Iron Warriors' tactics and even began having doubts about what to do; this uncertainty was worsened after being forced to kill Imperial forces in self-defence due to a particularly fanatical Inquisitor threatening the whole Chapter's death over his group's alliance with the IW.

Eventually, a group of Black Templars rocked up to the IW-FE party, headed up by High Marshal Bohemond. Things went about as pleasantly as you might expect from a meeting of psychotic Knights Templar in Spess and their mortal enemies, with the three forces essentially becoming locked in a Mexican standoff - Bohemond screaming for the heads of the Iron Warriors, Warsmith Kalkator manipulating Zerberyn's doubts to his advantage, and the Fists Exemplar themselves divided between the two camps.

With the battle-lines drawn and Bohemond ignoring any attempts at negotiations, Zerberyn made his choice. He blew Bohemond's head off more or less in front of everyone present, before pulling rank on the rest of his detachment to command them to fight on the side of the Iron Warriors. All but one company joined him in his rebellion, and joined the Iron Warriors with the last loyal company returning and joining the rebuilt Imperial Fists.

Thane, having become the Imperial Fists Chapter Master in their absence, was completely apoplectic at what had happened and ordered the last surviving officer to destroy their records, relics, and rituals before subsuming the remnants of the Fists Exemplar into the Imperial Fists to conceal the stigma of their becoming the first Chapter to fall to Chaos since the Horus Heresy - thus explaining their absence in the list of known Second Founding Chapters.

Strange how they would tolerate them joining ranks however. Most of the Iron Warriors would sooner exterminate themselves than allow pure Imperial Fists to join them. They barely tolerate the Warsmith Honsou for having both Iron Warrior and Imperial Fist gene-seed and even then they hate him for existing. Most likely the author realized the Fists Exemplar had been dropped out of the Codexes (perhaps forgotten about or just disliked by Geedubs for being an odd one out among their Legion) and decided to make a reason for it for whatever reason. In-universe, it's possible that the particular Iron Warriors commander was so low on troops at that time that they had no choice but to accept them, as they were desperate for manpower and had lost most of their bases. Alternatively, the gene-seed racism may not have been as bad several thousand years before Honsou's time. It's likely a combination of both as the Iron Warriors Warband was probably also cut off from the Eye of Terror and the greater part of the Legion during the War of the Beast.

While the fluff here isn't quite perfect, the fall of the Fists Exemplar is a pretty cool subplot in the Beast books, and one that solves some thematic holes. Its all about their pride, and how that makes them scornful even of other Marines and each other. Zerberyn sees the Iron Warriors like cool older brothers who just please themselves and aren't bound to the whims of lessers, so why not just do that? But they don't really have a goal except being feudal lords, just using the crisis to split off and be king. We don't see a lot of that and this fa/tg/uy likes it. Also their treachery led to Thane also being "last of the chapter" like Koorland was, which is a nice touch. In a series that really does go on too long, the Exemplars are a pleasing closed loop who are suitably grimdark.

(Perturabo might have smirked at the fact that Dorn's Sons have defected to his Legion).

The Excoriators are a chapter of Space Marines descended from the Imperial Fists. They are the subject of Rob Sanders' Legion of the Damned novel, more so than the Legion themselves (we get the Legion are mysterious and all, but half the time you forget they're the reason you bought the book). They're basically a chapter full of grumbling whiny killjoys with a pain fetish. Alternatively, you could say they have little tolerance for failure, are stubborn in a bad way, and suffer from a massive guilty conscience. They spend the first half of the novel whining about how badly the Alpha Legion raped their First Company, stole their Chapter Standard, and poisoned their old Chapter Master ("Oh go cry us a river you pussies." ~Lamenters). They spend the second half of the book fighting against a blood crusade. They also spend the entire book ordering their chapter serfs to whip them harder, dammit!

They're one of the very few Imperial subfactions with the balls to point out that the Emperor never wanted to be worshipped as a god, that he's nothing more than the greatest human psyker. They actually get into an argument with the Ecclesiarchy about this at one point; the argument ended with some Excoriator Scouts sniping the braindead priests who had decided that it was okay to arm and train Redemptionist militants in an open violation of the Decree Passive (here's a protip, Ecclesiarchs: if making threats against Marines gets Inquisitors killed, you won't fare any better).

They have this gene seed defect called "the Darkness". All it does is make them fall into a coma at random, much like how aneurysms kill normal humans. They actually figured out a cure for this coma though, but after they successfully test it out on Zachariah Kersh, their Chapter Champion, they spend a hundred more pages complaining about how he's still "cursed" (not helped by the fact that Kersh admitted seeing strange skeletal-armoured marines in the background when he regained consciousness) and how he's a "coward" for not chasing the Alpha Legion (even though Kersh, who had just been appointed Captain of the Fifth Company by order of the aforementioned poisoned Chapter Master, points out several times that the planet the Alpha Legion are supposedly on is an obvious trap, just like last time) instead of rejoicing that their best swordsman is alive and just beat the motherfucking Black Templars in the Feast of Blades (a swordsman tournament of Imperial Fists successors). Seriously, they waste so much time whining and bitching and indulging in their stupid whipping fetish. This is probably why the Legion of the Damned waited until all of the whiny little bitches are dead before actually showing up in their own book. Amusingly, the author repeatedly calls them out on it, usually through Kersh like him pointing out multiple times why his reason to not engage the Alpha Legion was the right choice. Kersh ends up being the only Excoriator to survive the battle, and doing so seems to finally earn him some damn respect from the rest of the Chapter. He later becomes Chapter Master.

As a side note, "to excoriate" means to harshly criticize, or to scrape away the skin. While that obviously points to their adventures in BDSM, it also shows how impossible it is for them to be satisfied. But then they all died, so maybe they had a point.

Another interpretation
First and foremost let me say this, when Space Marines are the primary characters in the piece it is not a good idea to write them as the utterly stoic fearless killing machines that the rest of galaxy sees them as. Why? Because internal conflict is one of the greatest hallmarks of fiction; without internal conflict, the characters are two-dimensional cardboard cut-outs meandering about the setting. The Excoriators carefully skirt this line; they have internal conflict to spare, and none of it is arbitrary or stilted. Their real problem is they risk coming across as two-dimensional cut-outs anyway because 90% of them can't move past "grouchy" and "cynical" for their character traits, and because they insist on chasing their stolen Chapter Standard to a planet they already know it isn't on.

Ah, but writing them as cold-hearted killing machines with barely any resemblance to humans would enable a writer to use the people around them and their enemies as the plot-driving conflicts of character. The gouges in the ground that guide the flow or the river that is Astartes.

Now let's move on to what makes the Excoriators awesome:

They, like most Chapters descended from Rogal Dorn, put an enormous amount of emphasis on endurance, perhaps even more so than that of other Imperial Fist descendants. For example, when their power armor is damaged they will only repair it to the point of restoring functionality. Superficial things like scrapes, pitting, dents, and things like that are ignored. So while other marines (Pretty Marines) will spend hours making sure their armor looks just perfect, Excoriators show up looking like the maw of the warp just spat them out. Do you want to scare your enemy? Show them that you've already weathered everything they could potentially throw at you. Their champion, by his own admission, won the Feast of Blades not simply because he was a superior swordsman or duelist, but was also due to the Black Templar and Imperial Fist champions with whom he was dueling simultaneously underestimated the sheer amount of damage Kersh could soak up and still fight like a son of Dorn.

They also have massive adamantium balls. Like, even by Space Marine standards. Once they're done whining about the Alpha Legion, they grab their bolters and face down a blood crusade, knowing full well that they're going to die, without any hesitation or further dissent. There are only 50 marines on the planet (and about 3000 Sisters of Battle), and the crusade has somewhere around 50 ships. One scout gets his <strike>legs</strike> (it was his pelvis) eaten by a daemon, yet demands to be on the battlefield three days later. Even their serfs get in on the action loading autocannons and shooting laspistols. There's also a Techmarine that is constantly followed by his pet Thunderfire Cannon that spends part of the battle going off on a search and destroy mission, by itself, through the streets and unloads a metric fuckton of ordnance, point blank, into a bloodthirster.

Also while the Excoriators are unusual in their denial of the Emperor as a god (common for Astartes, though), Legion of the Damned heavily suggests that the Excoriators may have come around to the divinity of the Emperor since it was the plea for assistance that was sent directly to the Imperial Palace on Terra that seemed to preempt the arrival of their ghostly saviors. Of course, it's far more likely that the Excoriators will simply figure it was because the Emperor is, you know, a super-powered psyker who is probably always paying attention to calls for help from his Astartes. Truly, "the Emperor Protects".

The Doom Eagles (stop laughing) are an official Space Marine Chapter, descended from the Ultramarines in the Second Founding.

They are extremely grimdark. What, the fact that they're called "Doom Eagles" isn't enough? Their homeworld is dying, and they only choose Gathians who have lost everything of importance to them to become Aspirants.

They use a LOT of Jump Packs and are considered to be some of the best practitioners of the Jump Assault, so just play them on the tabletop with Doom Eagle colors and the assault rules if you want to play a fluffy army. They once equipped an entire company with jump packs (including the Tacticals and Devastators) and dropped into combat from orbit. Ironically, or perhaps just as expected for a chapter with such morbid religious beliefs, they proved to be absolutely amazing for fighting Plague Zombies during the 13th Black Crusade, with not a single one falling to the plague. After all, you can't zombify what's already dead. Well, the canon reason was their faith and piousness, but their faith and piousness is centered around a religious belief that they're already dead so the theme still fits. Clap Your Hands if You Believe, after all.

Those Bloody Magpies "borrowed" a matching power axe and plasma pistol combo off them.

Also not to be confused with the Doom Legion, another Ultramarine chapter with similar name and colors.

The above quote mentions that the Doom Eagles seek to prevent other people from suffering. This automatically makes them one of the few chapters to give a crap about the rest of humanity. Plus, imagine the manly righteous fury they feel towards the enemy endangering peoples' happiness (or close enough to happiness). Yeah, they fuck shit up with a wrath.

The Crimsons Fists are a second founding chapter of the Imperial Fists, formed by the younger and more level-headed members, led by uberbadass Alexis Polux. Noted for their crimson gauntlets, which were inspired by <strike> the blood of their enemies after a good fisting </strike> a ritual with Rogal Dorn and an Imperial Fist successor Chapter Master having a manly handshake with cut palms, signifying blood brotherhood between them. The name sounds more like a particularly painful sex act of Slaanesh that ends in internal bleeding, but whatever, they're still cool. Also in damn near every artwork they are in, it's a last stand. Like seriously, they might as well be the king of dying heroically, as seen even in the OG Rogue Trader. Still, who doesn't love a good <s>fisting</s> final, defiant stand?
Overview
They got fucked over during an Ork invasion on Rynn's World, their home planet, when a stray missile fired from their orbital defense grid struck their own fortress. The damn thing somehow missed its original target, bypassed ALL of the fortress' void shields (we'll get to this freak accident later), and hit the armory directly, not exploding until it was hundreds of meters underground. The chances of this happening are about as likely as rolling 100 d20s and only getting 1s on all of them. (If you're curious, the probability of that happening is one in 1.267651x10130. Seriously.)

But it's okay, because the Crimson Fists still managed to beat the Orks with only <s>two-hundred and twenty-eight marines, 100 of which were killed</s> the actual number of marines that survived their fortress monastery being destroyed isn't stated (Rynn's World mentions 16 including Pedro Kantor and Alessio Cortez). Kantor had sent a significant force to New Rynn City to defend it (because, you know, Crimson Fists aren't complete arseholes and will make time to defend the civilians). All that's known is that after the Imperial fleet came to Rynn's World to screw up the Orks there were only a couple of companies left. A Land Raider appropriately named Rynn's Might somehow [[awesome|managed to skillfully pilot itself using only its machine spirit and take out a good chunk of the invading Ork horde, including a warboss, with hellishly accurate weapon fire. When it ran out of ammo, it then tried to run over the Orks and when its treads were clogged with bodies and its doors smashed open, it was entered by Lootas seeking to take it, after which it vented the reactor and killed them all with hot plasma.]] The Crimson Fists were able to recover the Machine Spirit of Rynn's Might, and are now trying to find a new vehicle to house the Machine Spirit. They probably need a Titan chassis to contain that much awesome (and a literal mile of parchment for its purity seals).

Let's also not forget that there's a part from the Rynn's World novel where Captain Cortez saves a mother and her kids, one of which is only a baby, from being murdered by Orks. Kantor is quite displeased at this, knowing that there are very few Crimson Fists left and they could not afford to take refugees along for the ride. However, he mentions they can tag along if they can keep up with the Astartes. Eventually the mother fatigues and falters, falling to her knees. The column of marines halt as their Chapter Master moves to the back, where the reader is led to believe that he is about to kill her given his wrist-mounted Storm Bolter is very, very close to her head. She pleads that her children were so heavy and she tried, and what does Kantor do? Let me stress that he did not want her in the first place. What does he do? He replies with, "You did well to bring them this far. It is time someone else carried you now." And then he picks her up in his arms, along with 2 of her kids, and rejoins his Battle-Brothers. Upon carrying half the family to the relative safety of a nearby forest, Kantor has a couple of his marines find food for the family. Later on, the marines save a group of about 60 pilgrims from a large group of Orks, then lead the entire group to the safety of New Rynn City. Do you see the Ultrasmurfs doing such a doubly heartwarming and doubly awesome act of kindness? <s>Of course not *cough*FallofDamnos*cough*</s> Yes, repeatedly. They help save civilians from the tyranids in "Shadow of The Leviathan", and Graham McNeill shows that they care about the lives of people in his Ultramarines novel series. Then again, the whole point of the book was the Fists learning to care about Rynn's World, and its people, as before that point they just saw it as their base (they didn't even recruit from the place). This was due to the fact they were a fleet-based chapter for most of their history and only received Rynn's World a thousand years before the Orks invaded it. Meaning what Kantor did wasn't just being a cool guy, it was character development, showing the Fists weren't just merely defending a world, they were defending their home.

The Crimson Fists 1st Company is known as the Crusade Company and consists of 128 marines after the Crimson Fists decided to get shit done during the Crusade of Righteous Retribution. During the crusade, the Fists were unable to procure new recruits, and slowly suffered attrition until they ended up with only 128 marines left. Sounds kind of pathetic until you realise that the crusade lasted for over 300 years, meaning that the Fists lost fewer than 3 marines a year. It's now considered a bad omen if they don't have a full strength Crusade Company.

It's also worth noticing that only 9 years after the Battle for Rynn's World, the Crimson Fists were already sending forces to fight in the Zeist Campaign. Crimson Fists obviously do not fuck around.

They've recently been boosted back up to around full strength with the Ultima Founding which probably means the Primaris Marines outnumber the regular marines.

Crimson Fists are so awesome they were the cover art for the 3rd Edition Space Marine codex and Rogue Trader. Yes, they were the cover of the very first edition of Warhammer 40K ever. Suck it Ultrasmurfs!

The Fists also have a bit of an unpleasant history with other Chapters; thanks to their exceptional zeal and loyalty, they've been repeatedly tasked with exterminating Chapters deemed heretics, such as the Soul Drinkers, Marines Vigilant (though in fairness they felt guilty about that afterwards), and the Sons of Gideon. Thanks to this reputation as team-killing fucktards working for megalomaniacal psychopaths in silly hats, they don't get along too well with the likes of the Space Wolves, White Scars, and probably most other chapters with a rep for defying the Emperor's pet psychos.

How the fuck did that missile incident happen?
Well the first option is just "these things happen." As the case of HMS Hood proves, sometimes you just roll a nat 1 critical miss and die a stupid death. But that's not really narratively satisfying, so various writers have tied themselves into knots to make it sound plausible. First it was implied it was a standard missile fired from an orbiting defensive platform, meaning it normally should have done NOTHING to such a mighty stronghold beyond a small crater. They claimed the missile bypassed the void shields entirely, hit a piece of mountainside that was really super-duper weak (and somehow the Crimson Fists didn't know about it) and went deep down into the mountain. The missile detonated the Crimson Fists' weapon stockpile, causing their chapter a lot of hurt.

This was fixed by Steve Parker; the missile was actually fired from one of the fortress's anti-ship weapons bastions, and the void shields had to be dropped to fire them. It was also the type of antiship missile that formed a melta field over the warhead to bore through ship armor before detonation, to make "tunneled through two hundred meters of solid rock" less stupid. Which is why silos like that should be, and usually are, kept in an orbiting installation rather than near the fortress, so you don't have to drop your shields to fire. While this would expose the silos, you can have one missile each and hide dozens of them far away from one another.

<span style='color:green>Nah, the Kaptin in charge of the ship told everyone that he would do this and it happened. Ork don't gotta explain.</span>

A new theory has emerged from the madness of the warp. See the Crimson Fists had a habit of pissing off certain people. Not the Inquisition, but something more complicated. During their history, the Crimson Fists clashed with the Ultramarines and Mortificators to the point of almost full blown civil war. The only reason this did not happened is because of the fact the Black Templars would step in on the side of the Crimson Fists and probably anyone who hates the Ultramarines (That is a long list of organizations and chapters). However a sabotage attempt makes a fair amount of sense and given how the Crimson Fists were not enemies of the High Lords or the Inquisition (They did their dirty work for them) the Ultramarines and their successors are a potential suspect.

Notable Members
*Alexis Polux: Founding chapter master of the Crimson Fists; they got their name from him. He died 800 years after the chapter was founded when some sneaky xenos dicks shot him in the head with a poison dart, but got the last laugh when he told his successor how to defeat the sneaky dicks with his dying breaths.
*Pedro Kantor: Current chapter master of the Crimson Fists. Has a major hate-on for Orks, like all the other Crimson Fists who lived through Rynn's World, and proved he has a heart when he carried an exhausted mother and her children to safety.
*Alessio Cortez: Fuckawesome captain who is probably insane. Has broken nearly every bone in his body and is currently about ninety percent scar tissue and sheer manliness. He got an arm torn off by an Ork warboss during the invasion of Rynn's World, but pointed out that technically he hadn't lost it because it was right over there. Disappeared while fighting Eldar, but he might still be out there.

Daily Rituals
06:00- Wake up Call: The Crimson Fists awaken from their beds made of Ork bone. Generally, a captured loudboy will be used as a substitute for an ancient Bird called a "Rooster". His usefulness spent, they proceed to beat the Ork to death with their bare fists.

07:00- Morning Prayer: The Crimson Fists will pray to the Emperor. They will also force Orks to pray, just so they can pray louder than the Orks. One of the most common prayers is a prayer for patience when dealing with the inevitable arguments over what a tortilla is.

08:00- Morning Firing Rites: Targets are set up in a field to be shot. A large portion of them are either captured Orks or painted to look like Orks.

09:00- Morning Battle Practice: The Ork cage is opened, and the Crimson Fists fight against their angry pets. Beating an Ork to death with one's fists is encouraged.

10:00- Breakfast: The Crimson Fists gather to eat before their arduous afternoon. Sauce for their churros is provided by dead Orks.

11:00- Tactical indoctrination: The Crimson Fists gather to make fun of Orks. Making fun of Ghazkull Uruk'Thraka is encouraged. Whoever throws the best insult gets to hold the chapter standard.

13:00- Afternoon Battle Practice: The Crimson Fists let the Orks out again so they can curbstomp them again. Typically, the afternoon battle practice takes longer due to the Orks being mad over the previous fight.

16:00- Evening Firing Rites: The Crimson Fists gather the most noteworthy Orks from the previous practice, and practice shooting them. Battle Brothers will be punished if they kill the Ork in the first shot.

18:00- Evening Meal: The Crimson Fists feast upon the Orks they killed. Their favorite dish is Ork paella.

20:00- Evening Battle Practice: The chapter practices Aerial and Mechanized maneuvers, whilst spreading Orkoid fungus, ensuring they have a plentiful supply of Orks for tomorrow.

22:00- Free Time: The chapter takes recreational time. Activities include games like Pin the Tail on the Ork, Kick the Ork, and Ork wrangling. Any Orks that die are immediately sent to resupply the snack bar.

24:00- Bedtime: The chapter retires for the evening. Before they go to sleep, they choose a loud boy to be the alarm Ork for the next day.

Naming Scheme
The Crimson Fists are (in)famous on /tg/ for being the Spanish Marines, primarily due to to how their Chapter Master Pedro Kantor and his best bud Alessio Cortez were named. This has bled into all media where the Fists are featured -- novels, games, even RPG supplements like Deathwatch. Even the Fall of Cadia features Captain Ruis Tracinto as part of the reinforcements that managed to make it to the planet.

This is not to say that every member of the Fists sport Hispanic-Iberian names -- Captain Ashor Drakken of the Badlanding incident comes to mind -- but an overwhelming number of them do.

In-universe, most of the Spanish-named marines (like Kantor and Cortez) come from the feral world of Blackwater, which is one of the major sources of recruits for the Chapter. They're considered... odd, by non-Blackwater born Marines.
The Brazen Claws are a Second Founding chapter descended from the Iron Hands. Their homeworld was eaten by daemons. Rather than taking it laying down, they launched a twenty-year crusade into the Eye of Terror. Their purity was tested upon their emergence, but they had successfully avoided any significant taint.

They recently appeared in the War of Beasts, it seems like GW has not forgotten them just yet. They also fought to reclaim Mordian in the Stygius Sector alongside their parent chapter as well as other Iron Hands successors like the Iron Lords and the Sons of Medusa.
They tend not to see tabletop because of their quartered red-and-blue paint scheme. They are otherwise identical to the Crimson Fists.
One of the successor chapters of the Blood Angels from the Second Founding, the Blood Drinkers are a proud chapter that conceals a dark secret that may yet damn them.

Like all their parent and sibling chapters, the Blood Drinkers suffer from the twin curses of the Red Thirst and the Black Rage. But unlike their fellow Blood Angels successor chapters, they have learned to embrace the Thirst and make it part of their way of life and traditions. Literally, they have gone full vampire, and like vampires they drink lots of blood to control their cravings.

Few, if any, are aware of the feasts where the chapter's Marines gather to drink vast amounts of blood to sate their thirst, and the Blood Drinkers go to great lengths to keep their shame a secret. Operating out of the planet San Guisaga (Okay, now GeeDubs isn't even trying - sanguisuga is Latin for "leech"), they fight to master their corrupt flesh and to prove themselves equal to their brothers in battle.

At first, the Blood Drinkers were hit harder by the Black Rage than any other Blood Angels successor chapter, but were saved after a battle-brother by the name of Holos was instructed in a dream to climb to the top of a mountain where he supposedly met an angel who promised to teach him a blood-drinking ritual that would stabilize the Black Rage. The Blood Drinkers must be offered blood willingly by their serfs, and must also sacrifice an unwilling human on an altar, allowing the blood to mix into a big pool before slurping it up like dogs at a bowl. Unknown to the rest of the Chapter, this "angel" was actually Kairos Fateweaver, and the ritual came with quite a few strings attached.

Because of this, Black Raging Blood Drinkers have about a 1% chance to relive Captain Holos' big climb up the mountain instead of Sanguinius' battle with Horus. At the end of the climb they meet The Fateweaver: Mr. Weaver gives Holos' instructions on how to do the blood feast ritual stuff mentioned above, and then he "tempts" the Black Raging Marine with a choice: Accept Tzeentch's blessings and damn the Blood Drinkers for eternity, or just re-engage their Black Rage and rot away in the Death Company as the rest of the chapter continues with their heretical rituals. None have accepted his offer yet, but Tzeentch isn't in any hurry. The chapter's entire Reclusiam is in on the heresy, which is why their Chaplains are always egging them on to bloodier and bloodier battles; perhaps trying to destroy their own Chapter in this way before some Marine is too weak-spirited and screws them all.

Geez, and people give the Dark Angels shit about being closet heretics.

In perhaps a "win" of sorts for a Chapter trying so hard to sacrifice themselves in battle, the Blood Drinkers were almost entirely wiped out during the calamitous Devastation of Baal.

The Black Templars are a Second Founding Space Marine Chapter of the Imperial Fists. These Space Marines are as manly as the Manly Marines and as angry as the Angry Marines. They make a hobby of dressing up as the Knights Hospitaller and trolling the Inquisition with their larger-than-Codex-approved numbers. They're righteously angry for the Emperor, they typically favour close combat and focased their charge in a blitzkrieg assault of a hundred angry Crusaders who won't hesitate to skullfuck the nearest alien/mutant/heretic with their power sword just because they look funny and/or smell of heresy. Although they don't need swords that much...

The Black Templars and their iconography are of a mixture of the Knights Templar, Teutonic Knights and the Knights Hospitaller. Basically if you need someone's shit pushed in hard by a power armored fist, these are the guys you call.

Quite possibly one of the fewest (if not the only) Astartes that the chaos heretics and chaos marines genuinely fear. Like "literally shat and pissed myself" fear. This fear is extended to Imperial allies, who the Templars have no problem weeding out those they see as weak in strength or faith with a not-so-polite bolt round to the head. So yeah, even the Imperium is afraid of these absolute lunatics. Kinda explains why everyone in Helsreach was only moments away from shitting their pants every time they spoke to one of the Astartes.
As of 9th edition they are said to be heading towards the Octarius clusterfuck as well. (Just passing by and saved a Forge World.)

About the Black Templars
The Black Templars have their origins date back to the first company of the Great Crusade-Era Imperial Fists, a group originally known as the Templar Brethren. They wore all-black armor and had black crosses on their right pauldron and shields. they were sworn to protect the Temple of Oaths (OK, the reality is that Forge World wanted to justify including Black Templars into Horus Heresy. They're really more Templar than Imperial Fist at this point already). Their Commander and First Captain of the Imperial Fists, Sigismund, started the tradition of the Emperor's Champion, in which a Templar would challenge the enemy's champions to single combat. The Black Templar mentality was born during the Siege of Terra, when Rogal Dorn allowed Sigismund to unleash himself in utter silence. After the Heresy had ended and Roboute Guilliman called for the Second Founding, Sigismund took his Templar Brethren to found the Black Templars during which Dorn, gift the new chapter a Tier VIII ocean war cruiser, Cross of Dorn.

They express their fury through burning heretical texts (as kindling for the actual heretics), pwning mutants, and skull fucking aliens. But you might say, "Isn't that what every other Spess Mehreen chapter does?" Well you'd be right, but they are the most proactive about it. While other chapters spend their time in cozy Fortress-Monastaries, sitting on giant reliquaries, and sending their lavish meal requests to serfs, the Black Templars take a slightly different approach to getting shit done. You'd be hard pressed to find any inactive Templars (except for Tankred), as they're typically too busy murdering things, encouraging their brothers to murder things, or organizing murder from orbit. Celebrations on finishing one Crusade involve declaring a new Crusade, recruits are taken from all the planets they've been on then sent to join the fighting so that they never have to slow down and they usually fight by zerg rushing their enemies with hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of heavily power armoured super humans holding power weapons while screaming a litany of curses at the top of their superhuman lungs. Also unlike other Chapters, they don't have scout teams, as they think they're not righteously angry enough. Instead all new Neophytes (read: meatshields) are given some crap and schooled in the field by a fully appointed Marine (called an "Initiate").

The foundation of Black Templar tactics are based on Sigismund's <s>anger management issues</s> teachings rather than Rowboat Gorillman's stupid book. This involves a bias for close-quarters combat (since the best way to make sure your enemy is well and truly dead is to skullfuck him with a chainsword), and a focus on duelling and honour-bound vengeance for the fallen. To quote the 4E Codex: "In battle, the Black Templars continue to fight in the style of their founder, Sigismund, preferring close combat to ranged warfare. Face-to-face with the enemy, a Black Templar can earn glory and respect and be sure that his foe is truly vanquished, fighting with righteous fury and the noblest ideals of honour. This is further emphasized by the fanaticism of Black Templars battle brothers, whose righteous anger makes them loath to retreat before an enemy. They will drive towards the foe relentlessly, their own casualties only serving to spur them on faster, hungry for vengeance on the slayers of their brethren."

The codex also notes that the Black Templars use two specific tactics most often, fairly similar in the broad strokes to how other Space Marines fight. The first tactic is the classical "death from above", where a devastating orbital bombardment is followed by a rain of drop pods and Thunderhawks, aimed to destroy vital targets. The other tactic is referred to as the "armoured spearhead", used if the Black Templars can land heavy equipment. Then they'll use bikes and Land Speeders to range and launch probing assaults, finding them smashing through the weakest spot in the enemy defences with Land Raiders, Rhinos, Predators and Vindicators. These columns will then slash left and right, eliminating and quite likely encircling individual enemy strongpoints until nothing is left.

The Black Templars are THE largest loyalist ("codex following") chapter, estimated to have at least over two thousand marines in their ranks. This is primarily because the Black Templars sometimes split their crusade fleets to achive different campaign goals and they're scattered throughout the galaxy so the correct number of Templars in active service is only known by Helbrecht, himself High Marshal of the Black Templars. Unfortunately, they're unwilling to fight beside psykers except for Grey Knights, they got all buddy-buddy with them fairly quickly, enough so that they willingly shared the STCs for the Land Raider Crusader with them, mind-wipes not withstanding of course. They also have a fondness for holy worlds, making with all haste to prioritize their defence before anything else.

They are descended from the Imperial Fists, but obviously got more of Dorn's angry splooge than his patient splooge. They sometimes get to wear cool Crusader helms, which are at least ten times as awesome as the beakies' Corvus helms.

The new Space Marines codex has changed several things about the chapter. It now states they worship the Emperor as a God like the larger Imperium and they have close ties with the Ecclesiarchy. This also makes them good friends with the Sisters of Battle, whom they regularly team up with and have several alliances with. Emperor pity the heretics who have to face both of these groups of zealous nutters at once.

Alternatively, you could choose to ignore the fluff in the new codex that says that they worship the Emperor, as it is wrong and demonstrates a clear Ward-like level of disregard for previous (and better) fluff as it also says that out of all Astartes chapters, only the Black Templars worship the Emperor. This contradicts several novels that say the chapters they revolve around worship him. The first that come to mind are James Swallows series on the Blood Angels. THEN there's the fact that Grimaldus, the Black Templars' High Chaplain (you know, guy who knows better than anyone else what they believe), said that they DO NOT worship him in ADB's sequel to Helsreach, Blood and Fire.

Besides, GW itself consistently holds that Space Marines do not worship the Emperor. GW lore even goes into details explaining that the Imperium accepts it as a quirk due to them being so physically and spiritually close to him that he only seems less divine to the Space Marines. The Inquisition and Ecclesiarchy don't like it, though. So, we have GW say "everything is canon" (In a multiple layers of reality due to Warp fuckery sort of way) and we have GW also saying that Space Marines do not worship the Emperor. Since they own Warhammer 40,000 we can safely say that Space Marines not worshiping the Emperor is the norm but there might be exceptions, a prominent example being the Blood Ravens from Dawn of War.

With the advent of the new Black Templar codex supplement, the Emprah worship seems to have been worked pretty well into their lore.

Regardless, they're utterly fanatical in enforcing the Emperor's will. Not what the Ecclesiarchy or Imperial Senate claims is his will, but his actual will. They refuse to work with (and often butcher) psykers because the Emperor said psykers and sorcery were no-nos. Logically, this means they would also respect his decree not to worship him and that he is not a god. The Black Templars were a Second Founding Chapter, so they would be fully aware of that. This was later retconned to specify that they only hate unsanctioned psykers as sanctioned psykers have the Emperor's approval. Even though technically only astropaths and Navigators do. Oh, and Grey Knights at the last second.

As a curious aside, the Chapter's "fuck the man" policy has lead them to collect some odd friends. They are the only known allies for a few chapters, including the Celestial Lions, Libators, and Star Phantoms. This is also reflected by their largely independent attitude regarding anything. During the Great Apostasy, the Templars led the attack on the Imperial Palace to arrest Goge Vandire.

In regards to the introduction of the new Primaris Marines Helbrecht was surprisingly open to them, ultimately seeing their value (They probably showed him pictures of The Bladeguard Veterans) and even creating new crusades for the Primaris Greyshields. However some Marshals in the Chapter saw them as borderline heresy and loathe them to no end. One chaplain and a band of like-minded marines in the Angevin Crusade took this hatred to its logical conclusion by killing the entire Torchbearer Fleet (albeit at great cost and nearly breaking the crusader host as a whole). This includes all the Primaris Marines, the Custodes escort, any Marine who voted against such an action, and Marshal Angevin himself! They justified this by saying the Primaris were Cawl's creations and thus impure, meaning anyone who supported them was a heretic (even the Custodes and Guilliman). Let it be known that with enough blind zealotry, the Templars can damn near kill anything (probably due to how the Warp works on reality, since one Custodes should be able to kill a company to a chapter of Marines on his own). Ultimately an investigation was ordered by Guilliman himself lead by an Imperial Fists Primaris who ultimately defeated the offending Castellan in combat and led the remains of the crusader host against the Word bearers, of which only a single Neophyte survived (who in fact saved Guilliman's representative from the last of offending crusades Chaplain's after he tried to kill him for discovering what his comrades had done). For the sake of unity he kept the secret to himself as all the guilty were dead anyway but does show that while constantly valorized in most depictions of the Black Templars, their blind zealotry can be a real problem when its not being pointed at the right target and something Guilliman will have to keep an eye on in the future. Or it would be if this was zealotry instead of heresy and treason. Cawl was part of the Astartes/Primarch project. He was part of creating them all in the first place which means he already has the Emperor's approval. Plus, the Primaris are made using pure gene-seed and part of the Custodes' own creation process. To be against either of these things is blatant heresy. The only part in any way questionable is the Belisarian Furnace. The incident with the Angevin Crusade was not of blind zealotry with the wrong target, it was flat-out heresy as it went against Imperial beliefs. Including that of the Black Templars. It proved that anyone can be corrupt either through lust for power (taking control of the Crusade for himself) or self-righteous delusion (ignoring the tenets of their own belief and replacing them with what they want to believe). Not to mention that killing a Custodes is probably the most heretical thing they could've done for obvious reasons.

On a side note apparently the Black Templars have a particularly high success rate in crossing the Rubicon Primaris. No one knows if it's due to divine intervention from the Emperor or maybe they're just too stubborn to die. Due to how the Warp works, this could literally be true. Hell, the Death Spectres chapter literally die and will themselves back to life as part of becoming a Space Marine, so it is absolutely possible for the Black Templars. Alternatively, "success" could just mean they had enough marines to just disregard all of the losses. Their recruiting process is rapid, so losses could likely be replaced faster than other marine chapters who only recruit from the aristocracy of space rome, barely-not-abhumans from only one planet, or have needlessly slow and complicated initiation rituals that cull the vast majority of the aspirants for no good reason.

From this page, especially their accomplishments, you might think they're better than everyone at what everyone else tries to do. You'd be right. But nobody has a problem with that because they're absolute badasses full of righteous anger for the Emprah. They are one of the only Chapters who fights like a mass-produced version of the Thunder Warriors would be expected to do: melee, basic tactics, and letting their armor and rapid support vehicles handle the rest. Instead of roleplaying as power armored Guardsmen like almost every other Chapter is obsessed with doing.

It's also worth mentioning that they succeed at a far larger expenditure of life. Remember that the Chapter is speculated to be somewhere close to five or six times the size of a codex compliant chapter. Then, recall that all of these marines are divided into three forces, consisting of multiple companies, each of which is wholly focused on one task, as opposed to a typical chapter's ten companies, which are usually focused on different tasks. Think about each crusade as its own chapter, that is constantly crusading at chapter strength (their numbers are unknown but logically are massive as they keep growing despite constantly crusading, but "massive" is relative with Space Marine numbers), with several companies all dedicated to doing one thing, compared to a standard chapter that divides many things between ten groups of roughly 100 marines.

*Vowing to go on an Eternal Crusade as part of their deal during the Second Founding and keeping it going non-stop for 10,000 years without getting killed or so diminished they had to settle down to rebuild! (Which is a really impressive feat even for superhuman Astartes.) Although the Horus Heresy novels have revealed that Sigismund didn't start this voluntarily, he was exiled by Rogal Dorn, and a lot of their more notable traits - like their absolute hatred of psykers - stems from Sigismund's butthurt over how he got exiled in the first place.
*Not forgetting about the Chaos Space Marines who fled into the Eye of Terror. When Abaddon and company first busted back out of the Eye of Terror, Sigismund was up in their business within the hour. And he nearly killed Abaddon and lost for bullshit reasons. Even so, the Chaos Marines had such deep respect for him that they returned his body and wargear totally unharmed.
*Taking back a hundred planets that were stolen by the blue space socialists after the Ultramarines realized the Tyranids were heading their way and prioritized stopping the all-devouring bugs over the bluies.
*Killing an alien psyker and accidentally blowing out ten billion astropaths in the process, <del>oops</del> just as planned. To be fair, said psyker was too powerful to let live and the Black Templars didn’t know its power would explode (which implies this was not normal for psykers).
*Wiping out countless alien species and actually sparing one alien species that was worshiping "The Voice of the Emperor" when they got there. They only destroyed their temples just in case this voice wasn't talking about who they thought it was. We can assume they spread some sort of teaching of Emperor-worship and possibly supervised the creation of new temples to the Emperor just to be sure. Or they were total dicks about it.
*The Second Siege of Terra! When some crazy ass High Lord of Terra named Goge Vandire usurped all power in Imperium, thinking that he can do everything he wants, he wiped out some Templar fortresses with orbital strikes and when they found out they got all righteous angry! Assisting Sebastian Thor, the Templars gather around a thousand Crusaders and along with some other Chapters as well as the Martian techno-guard; the Black Templars, with all fury, wage a frakkin' second siege of Terra!
Keeps
As the Black Templars are too busy being useful, they feel no need to have a permanent Chapter monastery. Instead, they will throw a keep on every few worlds they pass by, they are Imperial Fist successors after all. In fairness, their flagship the Eternal Crusader is a Gloriana class battleship. You know, the same class the Emperor Himself used as His flagship, so they don't really need a base beyond that.

Some fans have speculated that because of this, combined that they have been doing this for 10000 years, the Templars could have fuckhuge numbers of Marines. This is a retarded joke started by TTS that makes no sense. Not every Keep is staffed with Marines at all times. The 9th edition Supplement makes this fact abundantly clear, as did the 4E Codex back in its day. Which contradicts their lore and that of the Imperial Fists, which is that the keeps are their source of recruits. So, we're to believe they willingly limit their own number of recruits or that they abandon worlds that allow them to build those keeps despite it being a very important part of their function and culture inherited from Dorn. Although, it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable for them to staff keeps nearby the crusades' path, considering travel times in 40K. You don't want to wait for recruits coming from the other side of the galaxy.

When Keeps are staffed they are commanded by a Castellan, who is responsible for the upkeep and defense of said Keep. He is also responsible for the recruitment of Aspirants into the chapter, who go through some of the most intense training of perhaps any chapter. By which we mean they are forced to fight each other, walk through traps in the dark, and throw their arm into a blazing fire while reciting fucking scripture, all while being indoctrinated into complete and unquestioning loyalty to "the will of the Emperor". Yeah, the Templars are absolute lunatics. To be fair, their methods do create both incredibly deadly Space Marines and incredibly loyal Space Marines.

But how does one become an aspirant? It generally depends on the location of the Keep. On Death worlds, an aspirant might fill the back of some dangerous beast with swords and bring an offering. On other worlds, prospective warriors might be press ganged, or even kidnapped into service. Just to remind you that ADB's interpretation of the Black Templars can be full of shit.

To add further insult to Injury, the Templar's keeps serve no purpose defensively, or even to improve the lives of the people on the planet. They serve only the Black Templars interests.

Why no one has called out the Templars for leaving empty fortifications all across the galaxy that any genius could steal for themselves can only be called a miracle. Must be high faith in the security system. That or the fear of getting a firm righteous backhand from the Templars for questioning their methods. Or, much more likely, they aren't empty and everyone is too terrified to call out the Black Templars on that.

Organization
Since the Imperial Fists told Papa Smurf to go fuck himself and his Codex, the Black Templars have an organization different from Codex Chapters. They organize themselves into Fighting Companies, with much of it on the fly. Their ranks and positions include:

*High Marshal: The Chapter Master of the Black Templars, who decides which Crusades the Black Templars will participate in, without bothering for an okay from the High Lords of Terra. Helbrecht serves as the current High Marshal. Interestingly enough, in their original Codex the High Marshal and regular Marshals typically do not go face to face with the enemy (to the point where Helbrecht never actually touched down in the Third War for Armageddon, he stayed in space dictating the orbital battle), Marshals and High Marshals prefer to stay back assessing the battlefield and advising the various squads through their communicators about where they should strike and shoot to make the most out of their troops. The irony of such a rage-happy rip-and-tear Chapter having a reasonable and intelligent command style is not lost.
*Marshal: The commander of a Crusade, a Marshal is equivalent to a Captain, they're the ones that lead the individual Crusades. When a Crusade is called and there is no Marshal to lead it a candidate is chosen from among the sword brethren and if the High Marshal thinks he is fit for the task appointed Marshal. There has only ever been one case of a candidate being rejected by the High Marshall. It is from the ranks of the Marshals that the new High Marshal is picked should he fall in battle.
*Emperor's Champion: Before an undertaking usually during battle preparations, one of the Black Templars may have a vision granted by the Emperor. This knight will be declared by the Chaplains to be the Emperor's Champion, as their founder Sigismund was ten millennia ago. He will be given the Black Sword and the Armour of Faith, and serve as an inspiration to the rest of the Crusading host. As with the first Emperor's Champion, Sigismund, it is the sole duty of those who bear the title to seek out and challenge any enemy champion the crusading force meets in battle. If he is killed before his mission is complete it is considered an ill omen indeed, though there is no requirement for every crusade to actually have one, the 8th edition codex says there is only ever one in the chapter at any given time. It is unknown what happens to the knight who is chosen after the completion of a Crusade as none have been shown to survive long enough for it to matter. Other chapters, most usually Imperial Fist's successors, occasionally have an Emperor's Champion who serves a similar purpose but without the artifacts.
*Castellan: The lieutenants of the Marshal, a temporary position chosen by the Marshals (one guy cannot be everywhere) and who is a Castellan can vary depending on the current Crusade or even the current battle (pick who's best to lead the current fight). The Castellans lead the Fighting Companies of a Crusade, and they're also chosen from the Sword Brethren.
*Sergeant: The only Codex rank the Black Templars employ. Also from the Sword Brethren (notice a pattern, yet?).
*Sword Brethren: Roughly analogous to Veterans in Codex Chapters, Sword Brethren are the senior battle brothers of the Marshal. They also get to use Terminator armour.
*Initiates: Rank and file battle-brothers. Marines (typically Neophytes) dying around them has a beneficial effect on Initiates, making them run harder into enemy gunfire for reasons unknown and oft-speculated upon.
*Neophytes: While most Chapters have their neophytes serve in some sort of recon force, the Black Templars have their new Space Marines join the Crusade at the front lines and hit the ground running. Given that this has worked for ten thousand years, they may be onto something. Every Neophyte is assigned to an Initiate who is to train and tutor them. The Neophyte serves as the apprentice to the Initiate, sort of like Jedi in Star Wars but the Neophyte gets smacked if they even dare bitch about sand. They are also quite useful to Initiates to use as shields (literally) in battle.

Chapter Strength
Despite being a Codex Chapter (well, they're a Codex Chapter as of the newest Codex), they basically just cherry pick whatever they want from it. In particular, they're doing what most overstrength chapters do which is not flaunting their numbers. The Adeptus Terra lacks the ability to enforce the number limit on every Chapter, and instead just makes examples out of those who go too far. Because the Templars are doing so much and avoid concentrating their numbers, the Adeptus Terra is willing to look the other way because honestly they can't afford to fight the Templars and honestly kind of need them. But Ordo Astartes Inquisitor Yetzmov thinks otherwise and has spent 100 years trying to proof their rule breaking and punish accordingly. Even though they usually have multiple Crusades going on at once, they must be the best Marines around, seeing as every other Crusading Chapter has roughly a thousand Marines (usually less). Guess that's what happens when you genuinely embrace righteous fury and unleash it upon the alien, the mutant, and the heretic.

However, it's not actually clear how many Marines they actually have. Some neckbeards (both fanboys and bitter opponents) exaggerate the actual numbers, referring to them as legion strength and/or believing that their numbers are figuratively without limit and end up with ridiculously high guesses. Given the vagaries of in-universe time due to warp phenomena and the inevitable depletion of assets due to the nature of their work, as well as the fact that they have shit record keeping due to a complete lack of Librarians, the actual number of active Templars would be in constant flux.

In Blood and Fire, Grimaldus mentions that they typically have dozens of Crusades going on at any point in time; other sources tell us that the Black Templars as an entire Chapter actually consist of a total of three "primary" Crusade fleets from which all other fighting companies are split from and deployed on their own "secondary" Crusades when necessary. This coincides with the original codex, which said that there were usually no more than three Crusades at any given time but that they can stretch themselves according to necessity, and states that in one exceptional case there were up to fourteen Crusades operating in the Segmentum Solar during the Treachery of Dalmark.

If we were to base the numbers off the estimate in the back of the 4th edition Codex: Black Templars, the deployment map totals greater than 6000 marines, with several of those Crusades routinely exceeding 500 marines. But when you factor in normal redeployment over the years that number isn't very helpful as many of those Crusades were finished by the time others arose. When you consider it like that, many other chapters have deployed en masse over the years and would also generate a similar deployment map. Furthermore, only a handful of Crusades numbered relatively close to one thousand, with only Armageddon passing it, with 1,232 Marines total and even that number was questioned (?) by the author; for this campaign, High Marshal Helbrecht was said to have mustered three crusades.

So we can either take it as written in the Order of Battle that the three crusades represent the "normal" three crusades and hence the entire chapter, giving us an absolute minimum of over 1000 marines, or we can assume that the three crusades are not the primary crusades at all, which still doesn't give us much of an indication of the chapter size, leaving us at square one.

To make things even more confusing, each Crusade will be accompanied by a Black Sword and a set of the Armour of Faith, to be used by the Emperor's Champion. The 4E codex said that every Crusade and fighting company would have its own Champion, but the 6E Codex and the newer novels changed this older fluff and said that there could only be a single Champion in the entire Chapter at any given time, and that only a handful arise every century. Plus, there are only ten Black Swords in the Chapter and they are held by the Chaplains, just in case they find the Champion within their Crusade. This implies that there can only be ten Crusades active at any one time; hence, if the three Crusades at Armageddon, taken to be around 1,232, are three-tenths of the Chapter's overall size, the Black Templars have around 4,000 marines.

However, the novel Eternal Crusader flat-out says that the whole Chapter could gather together on the Eternal Crusader itself and barely tax the capabilities of the vessel, and that "the mere'" 200 marines of Helbrecht's Crusade, which constituted one fifth of the Black Templars' total forces, meant that the vessel was mostly empty, making them far more Chapter sized. The book also shows High Marshal Helbrecht purposefully exaggerating the size of his contingent at Armageddon from 400 marines to 900 in order to gain overall command of the Astartes forces that had arrived (many Chapters had brought a lot more men than the Templars, and would have had more right to overall command). Helbrecht would later leave Armageddon briefly to muster "more" Black Templars (but only bringing the number up to what he promised), so it is easy to see how the size of his contingent would be misleading to an outside observer.

The old Codex also suggested somewhere between 5000-6000 "if certain accounts are to be believed" which places a level of uncertainty on the number, and if you consider the above statement would sound reasonable if you took Helbrecht at his word about the availability to Black Templar soldiers and could easily show how the Administratum has been misled into thinking the Templars are much larger than they actually are. A-D-B also suggested about 6000 in an offhand comment; therefore, it is currently our highest reasonable upper limit without resorting to guesses.

Also, Chapters in general have a habit of seconding Marines to "Honor Companies" which are basically autonomous companies or ones dedicated to certain tasks or seconded to other forces. The Codex allows for an infinite number of honor companies as they aren't within the Chapter's chain of command and are essentially their own miniature Chapter (though probably cannot get their own recruits). Chapters commonly use this to totally circumvent the recruitment restrictions. Which of course means the number of Astartes actually in the galaxy is impossible to know even if every Chapter had exactly a thousand Marines and there were exactly a thousand Chapters there could actually be a quadrillion fuck tons of Marines for all we know.

----
The author of Eternal Crusader later acknowledged on his blog that the Black Templars could have maintained extreme numbers in the past, but that the overall strength of the Chapter was reduced to a thousand (more or less) as result of a corporate decision by GW, not just of the codex authors. Heresy!

It is perhaps best to repeat the Black Library's own take on the fluff: 40k is in the fucking dark ages and everything written down could be a legend, propaganda, an event that happened, or a rumor based on a real event. Any guess as to the number of Marines in the Black Templars is just that, a guess, and a book offers only the author's point of view, or what he wants you to think, or he himself is a fabrications.

8th Edition still maintains the information confusion over the Black Templar's actual numbers, just like before. While the Imperial Index states that "each Black Templars battle-fleet contains thousands of warriors." The actual Space Marine Codex states that "the size of each can vary from several battle-brothers to several hundred" and though it also says there is no fixed number of Crusades.

The latest fluff from Psychic Awakening: Faith and Fury gives the throwaway line that "each of the crusades is comprised of thousands of space marines" without substantiating how many crusades there actually are. There are are still only nine Black Swords in existence (Guilliman destroyed one to defeat Skarbrand during the events of Rise of the Primarch). So one could infer that there are anywhere between two and nine crusades at most, and their arrangement can change fluidly, just as mentioned above. Of course, since "thousands" of Astartes per crusade would still mean that at minimum there are four thousand Black Templars in the Chapter as that is the only way for the bare minimum of "crusades" plural and "thousands" for each.

...Not much seems to have changed, fanboys and opponents can believe what they want.

Apparently, the book "Throne of Light," states that the Black Templars number somewhere around 25,000 ASTARTES , spread across a myriad of crusades which all have their own cultural quirks about them. This is a stupidly high number of marines, and it can be presumed the only reason the Inquisition hasn't done anything about this is because the Templars are faithful, zealous, and really good at turning heretics into a grimy brown paste. That and the few inquisitors stupid enough to question the Black Templars openly have a nasty habit of walking face-first into bolt pistols. Or that they're so spread out that they are functionally totally separate Chapters anyway and so worrying about it is basically pointless. This number actually does fit with the above fluff, though. All the Templars would have to do is just not reduce the number of crusades from the loss of a black sword. And, let's face it, do you honestly believe they'd have fewer crusades for any reason? The remaining five thousand is very easily explained as each Crusade not having exactly one thousand Marines because, duh, they're dying and reinforcing constantly. As "thousands" was used in the Psychic Awakening and would mean at least two thousand as it is plural, that would mean nine swords and one crusade they'd never dream of removing makes twenty thousand Space Marines. Five thousand more spread among the ten Crusades due to attrition and reinforcement could certainly amount to roughly twenty five thousand Black Templars.

Oh, also they have apparently stolen gene seed from other Imperial Fists successors in the past which is kind of fucked.

On Psykers
For most of their history the Black Templars didn't have any Librarians. This was generally thought as a pretty simple fact, they hate all forms of witches. They even have a special rule call "Abhor the Witch". That was until 6th edition when it was more explicitly stated that they had no real compunction against other librarians from other chapters, Astropaths and Navigators, since they were the only people who knew how to drive the massive Crusading fleets (pure unadulterated HOLY RAGE!! can't steer a ship through the Warp after all). Of course, this was always true since the BT always accepted those psykers that the Emperor himself had sanctioned (although they watched them closely), which includes Astropaths, Navigators and (surprise, surprise) the Grey Knights. Which invalidates the logic of the following paragraph.

According to the GW apologists, the major difference between their codex and 6E is their opinion on other psykers: In previous works, it was made pretty clear that they wouldn't suffer the witch no matter who they were (except for the aforementioned groups the Emperor sanctioned personally), and as such literally couldn't ally with any other psyker-using force except for the Grey Knights (and even then, it was AoC (Note: "AoC" is a 6th Ed construct)). Come the 6E Codex however, suddenly all their hatred for every psyker was scaled back to merely just being a hatred to all enemy psykers. Some may call this fluff-rape and all that in their neckbearded RAGE, but others realize that setting up tons of restrictions would ultimately serve to cripple the Templars and ultimately just kept things easier by just generalizing it, to say nothing of the fact that the Emperor himself was a psyker. Not to mention the whole organization of sanctioned psykers used by the Imperium. Those guys were permitted to operate by...uh...someone, right? If it was the Imperial Senate, then only the Captain-General of the Custodes speaks with the Emperor's voice. If it was literally anyone else with that kind of authority then it would be someone even closer to the Emperor in authority than merely his voice. So, the general hatred of psykers just isn't feasible anyway.

So it was changed. The Black Templars hatred is only towards alien and rogue psykers and that they have great respect for the ones in the fleet (and don't go bugfuck nuts, which is no mean feat for a mortal psyker). So why no Librarians? There are three <s>theories</s> hypothesis in the codex:

*They still enforce the Edict of Nikaea. Considered most likely, given their special rule "Abhor the Witch!"
*A gene-seed defect.
*They lost them during The Howling.

A small part of it likely has to do with their recruiting process. Since they recruit from the worlds they Crusade on, and they spend a decent amount of time purging renegade psykers, there probably aren't any psykers left for them to recruit and they're not likely to recruit Psykers found by somebody else. It still doesn't explain why they've never had a recorded incident of latent Psykers awakening once they've been recruited. <strike>They kill any newly awakened Psyker, then pretend he never existed until everyone forgets him.</strike>

Rather hilariously, the Black Templars are not even certain why they don't have Librarians; because the Librarius usually maintains the records of the chapter, the Templars have allowed their understanding of history to fall into decay. For the time being, they have come to the conclusion that the loss of the Librarius is simply part of the Emperor's grand design, and should he see fit to bless them with Librarians again they would gladly use them.

Given how the Warp (and 40K in general) works as a genuine Clap Your Hands If You Believe setting, it could be that the Black Templar's own hatred of psykers causes any psykers or latent psykers they didn't realize were such to either become non-psykers or simply inactive/latent and remain that way. Rogal Dorn rejected Chaos so strongly that basic daemons were incapable of existing in his presence. So, it wouldn't be surprising if the Templar's hatred does prevent psychic manifestation.

To add to all the confusion above, the newest Codex says that the Black Templars flat out hate all psykers, and treat their navigators and Astropaths as little more than dignified slaves, throwing another wrench into the whole fucking situation. Especially since the Navigator Houses wouldn't tolerate that and astropaths contain a piece of the Emperor's own will/soul and are sanctioned by him personally. It's probably Games Workshop messing around purely for shits and giggles.

Notable members
*Sigismund: First Chapter Master/Soul brother who made the chapter when Dorn broke the Legion up.
*High Marshal Helbrecht: Their current Chapter Master. Gets fucked up by Imotekh the Stormlord who proceeds to take his arm as a trophy. Helbrecht then manages to destroy his entire fucking flagship as retaliation. Currently on <s>a manhunt for Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka alongside Commissar Yarrick</s> Crusade to drive Chaos away from some Shrine Worlds.
*Chaplain Grimaldus: THE most badass Chaplain in the entire Godsdamn Imperium, with the possible exception of Lemartes. He fought the biggest Ork WAAAGH in history on a very old temple that had relics and artifacts that were sacred to the Imperium. The battle only ended after the temple collapsed and buried every Ork and Marine under the rubble. But since Grimaldus was too badass to die, he crawled out of the temple with a few relics he managed to save. And besides the guy has the word grim in his fucking name! How can he not be badass? The main caveat about his description is in his depiction in the book Helsreach, featuring Grimaldus' service in Armageddon leading up to his title as "Hero of Helsreach", where we learn he is equally skilled at tantrum-throwing/sulking, as he is kicking lots of ork ass. But to be fair, this isn't the Grimaldus we know and love as first. Helsreach is about him manning up under constant pressure, him finding he has to stop feeling like he has to be his old boss's bitch all the time and learning to be the butch. He does manage to man up and becomes the badass we all know and love (by the end of things, like, the very last second before a cathedral falls on him and knocks him out and not a second sooner). Plus, he had the stones to do it all WITHOUT A ROSARIUS.
*Antioch: A Techmarine who made especially Holy Hand Grenades.
*Tankred: He who endures. Also is partial to bitches.
*High Marshal Ludoldus: A previous High Marshal notable for having led the Templars during two Crusades that were separated by over 2000 years, specifically the Vinculus Crusade (833.M41) and the Jerulas Crusade (645.M39). Considering that he was already High Marshall by the time of Vinculus, one can only conclude that Ludoldus was FUCKING OLD... and totally blows Dante out of the water as the guy even has old in his fucking name. Or you know warp shenanigans.
*Castellan Draco: notable role in the Vinculus crusade, notably in killing Inquisitor Lord Vinculus after he got possessed, but not after his own losses; that is, he got buried in rubble after lacing the cult's massive fortress with explosives. For his valiant efforts, he got his lost parts replaced with bionics, a relic suit of armour and Lord Vinculus' sword. Declared Excommunicate Traitoris in IF supplement, becoming the first SM special character with a model who turned traitor in 40k. Well, "turn traitor" according to the Inquisition who just lost a Lord Inquisitor to him and embarrassing the entire Inquisition with such a reveal.
* High Marshal Bohemond: Led the Chapter during the War of the Beast.
* Marshal Magneric See Tankred above imagine if he was in command of his own Crusade. Unlike most dreadnoughts he still kept his name and rank and rarely slept which made him into a crazy fanatic (and implied to be the source of the religious zeal) spends most of his days hunting his old BFF Warsmith Kalkator until Orks of The Beast showed up.

Daily Rituals of a Black Templar
Think Angry Marines but with less copious cursing.
* 03:50: Morning Call to Prayer: Initiates awaken their respective Neophytes from their comfortable slumber on bare stone floors. This often involves buckets of ice water, vox-casters playing hymns with the volume control knob broken off, or a power armor shod foot up the ass depending on the Initiate in question. Complaints that this awakening occurred ten minutes prior to scheduled reveille are met with readministration of the waking aid.
* 04:00: Morning Prayer: Neophytes are berated for their perceived failings by their responsible Initiates, who are in turn berated by the Sword Brethren, the Sword Brethren by the Castellans, up to the Marshal who berates the entire Fleet then swears a solemn vow to an icon of the God-Emperor that they will do better and prove themselves worthy by stabbing heretics in the throat with their swords. Tactics may also be discussed, and orders of battle issued, assuming they involve rushing headlong at the enemy.
* 05:00: Morning Firing Rites: The Initiates school their apprentices on the art of shooting Xenos in the face while simultaneously swinging a chainsword. This shooting preferably occurs while rushing across the active firing range in order to close with the target and hit it with the bolt pistol if possible.
* 07:00: Morning Battle Practice: Initiates inform their neophytes that if they are done being cowardly whelps, they may now avail themselves of a sword with which to stab shit.
* 11:55: Milk and cookies break. Any neophytes stupid enough to drink milk or eat cookies in front of their Initiate gets their meal pushed in their noses and eyeballs respectively. Things get interesting if they dipped their cookies in their milk.
* 12:00: Midday Prayer: Neophytes are told how poorly they did during the morning exercises; any sense of pride or joy is rooted out. The Marshal leads the Fleet in prayer and promises the God-Emperor they will kill more things even more righteously this afternoon.
* 13:00: Midday Meal: The chapter serfs provide cold cuts for the brothers' enjoyment. Lunchmeat is usually collected by the serfs following each battle and stored in the ships' freezers. Naturally, Neophytes do not get something to eat yet as the Initiates insult them for even assuming they get to eat. The Neophytes soon learn that the God-Emperor has a sense of humor when the Initiates are informed that only Sword Brethren on up are allowed to eat.
* 13:15: Tactical Indoctrination: Locations of the vital organs and blood vessels of xenos species that may be encountered on the current Crusade and the weak spots of Daemons are reviewed, occasionally an Initiate will cuff his Neophyte on the back of the head and reiterate "Yes that, you stab that retard." Other tactics may also be discussed as long as they involve inserting blades into things.
* 14:00: Afternoon Battle Practice: Initiates attempt to kill their Neophyte with a power sword. If the Neophyte is not dead in four hours, he passes muster.
* 18:00: Evening Firing Rites: Neophytes are instructed in how to operate heavy and specialty weaponry dropped by their responsible Initiate when he abandons it so that he may swing his sword with both hands to better kill shit and is eaten by a monstrous creature which he bravely <s>(read:stupidly)</s> (read:RIGHTEOUSLY) tried to skullfuck in CQC.
* 20:00: Evening Prayer: After short session of critique and berating, the Emperors' Champion leads a sermon about how awesome the Emprah is and how much He wants them to bifurcate/decapitate the current heretics/mutants/xenos they are fighting with power weapons.
* 21:00: Evening Meal: A feast is served by the chapter serfs. Alcohol and anything that has a pleasant taste will not be consumed as the God-Emperor looks down on those that enjoy life. No hamburger, no cheeseburgers, no french fries, no milkshakes, no potato chips; you will drink water distilled from the Fleet's waste/reactor AND LIKE IT!
* 21:30: Night-fighting/zero-gravity exercises: Initiates instruct their charges on stabbing things by the glow of a power sword and how to fight in a zero-gravity environment without jump packs (stab foe, use corpse as a springboard to assault another foe, repeat).
* 23:15: Wargear Maintenance: Initiates encourage Neophytes to keep weapons in proper working order with phrases like, "SHARPEN YOUR SHIT YOU, FUCKING INCOMPENTENT BASTARD!!!" as the God-Emperor reserves great disdain for those that kill heretics with dull blades.
* 23:45: Free time: The Initiate is free to challenge his Neophyte to a short duel. Wounds heal better during sleep anyway.
* 00:00 Rest period: The Initiate sees his Neophyte off to bed, with one last punch to the face to help him fall asleep. The Sword Brethren then punch the Initiates in the face before they retire for rest period.

Note that this constitutes a day off for a Black Templar. A working day will involve 23 hours of rushing monstrous creatures with melee weapons. Neophytes are expected to pull bullet sponge duty so the Initiate is not distracted by little things like enemy gunfire (and that their spilled blood will allow the Initiates to glide on the ground to their enemy faster) as seen here:

Black Templar Combat Training
Brother-Initiate Teuton McTemplar: "Neophyte, get your ass over here and hold my Lascannon while I charge that Carnifex with my Power Fist!"

Neophyte Hans Wolfgang: "But sir I have not yet earned my power Armour and a Lascannon weighs 100 kilos..."

Brother-Initiate Teuton McTemplar: "You are going to pick up that spotlight and burn some fucking xenos, and you are going to like it!"

Note: It would be nice if this could happen, but in reality, you can only arm Neophytes with shotguns or bolt pistols with CCWs, though you were able to arm an initiate with both a Lascannon and a Power Fist in their original codex. Hilariously too you could go completely overboard and have one marine armed with a Power fist, three bolt pistols (or two bolt pistols and a bolter), a Chainsword, a Power Weapon, a Heavy Bolter, a Missile Launcher (or a Multi-Melta), a Lascannon, and a Plasma Cannon ALL AT THE SAME TIME (though while funny is still a terrible thing to put on the battlefield as he can still only fire one per turn, pistols notwithstanding). Talk about a jack of all trades...
wh40k-stub
The Black Guard are a rare second founding successor of the Raven Guard Chapter. They have a sweet colour scheme (that looks similar to the white scars) and a tendency to rely on bombing the complete ever-living fuck out of anything stupid enough to declare itself an enemy, because half measures are no measures at all, and who needs an ambush if the enemy is already gone? Like many successor Chapters their history has been <strike>nuked to shit</strike> lost to the passages of time and buried in the annals of forgotten history, such is life.

They were formed from the Shadow Wardens, which served as Corax's personal bodyguard during the Horus Heresy. As you can imagine they took quite a beating during the Drop Site Massacre and their commander (later Chapter Master) Gherith Arendi was said to have survived only by using other legionnaires as a distraction in order to steal a shuttle and escape. Dick move. (Although this might explain where pounding sticks of dynamite into peoples asses rubbed off on them.) In the 41st millenium, they were last seen in the very opening phases of the Charadon invasion, repealing multiple Death Guard vectoriums in the world of Dryoch's Reach. Although given the amount of forces Typhus brought to bear against the Forge World of Metallica, they only managed to delay the inevitable.

The only other thing really known about them is the reconfirmation of the deterioration of their geneseed, requiring resupply of purer stocks from Terra (have they not built up their own stocks by 10 thousand years? The gene seed repository may have been attacked since they apparently did deliver the tithe enough to build a reserve there).

Plus they had a Master of the Forge called Germanius. So they have a possibility for pimping names.

Besides that, ambushes with overwhelming firepower? Fuck yeah! Count me in!
