Drizzt Do'Urden is the <del>Drow</del> <del>Elf</del> Drow protagonist of several of R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms novels. He is well known - and well-hated - on /tg/ for being the origin of the "Good Drow Ranger Fighting To Prove Him/Herself Worthy Despite The Sins Of His/Her Kin While Dual-Wielding Scimitars" stereotype used as a template to create characters by hundreds upon thousands of pathetically unoriginal idiots the world over. While Drizzt really isn't a terrible character in and of himself (especially in light of shit like Pinelight), the sheer volume of Drizzt-clones he's spawned are capable of inducing burning fury in even the most mild and even-tempered of dudes.

He is also commonly described as a Mary Sue, although whether this is really a property of the character himself or if he's simply tainted by association with the thousands of knock-off characters he spawned is open to debate. Some bet on the latter, having moved into "sick of people who are sick of the original subject matter". Other point out that, all copycats aside, Drizzt has stupid amounts of plot armor in the books and is able to carve his way through armies and Epic-level encounters such as Balors without sweating despite only being lvl16 pure-class ranger. Given past experience by players being inspired by stupid shit, there is every reason to take a lot of problems with the guy with a grain of salt. However, keep in mind that Drizzt's author Mr. Salvatore had given him a thoroughly well-planned plotline to at least justify to kill the Balor, such as an extremely powerful frost weapon scores of pages and chapters ago, so under such circumstances killing a Balor with a well-planned ambush as a level 16 ranger can be tolerated to a degree, and character-wise, Drizzt is a pretty mellow, morally consistent, and reasonable individual without going into needless heroism and Kaldor Draigo level of challenges. It's the cargo cult-grade fanboyism that made the fucker be hated by the rest of the world's Neckbeards, and even inspire a seriously fucked-up webcomi- OK I'LL STOP ADVERTISING.

No matter what your verdict, keep in mind he is an elf and thus automatically 5 billion times less manly than even the dreaded Space Communists.

Doubly fun fact: He was planned as a SECONDARY character, a sidekick in support of a human Barbarian called Wulfgar, in a crusty old book named The Crystal Shard. Then the writing started and, whattaya know? He just had too much charisma to not end up becoming the main character.

Ok, so why is this son of a bitch so popular?
* Drizzt is a unique and beautiful snowflake.
** To his credit however, even Drizzt himself is facepalming at the above line. Jesus.
* He has lavender eyes, making him popular among the ladies.
* Drow are hot, and Drizzt is a drow. Therefore we can safely conclude that Drizzt is hot. (Confirmed by our on-staff homosexual.)
* He occasionally hangs out with dorfs, which basically means he cannot completely suck.
* I think Drizzt is a pretty cool gal, seh kills demons and doesn't afraid of anything.
* His name sounds exactly like the Russian word for "diarrhea" (was even renamed into Dzzirt in the official Russian translation, go figure).
* Because he's a male drow that doesn't get slapped for not GB2Kitchen. Indeed, he slaughtered his way across his Stupid Evil members to his well-earned freedom.
* Has a badass black panther animal companion.
* Drizzt isn't a fan of his clones either. And to his credit, he gets shit done better than them.
* Though Chaotic Good, he isn't Chaotic Stupid. Uses chaotic things like lies, deceit and lawful things like principles and plain self-sacrifice to ensure his friends, and good is preserved without resorting to Mary Sue killings like Kaldor Draigo did. At one tale, he uses a sack of flour to drown Crenshinibon, a world-threatening sentient crystal, in another he willingly takes blows from the now-grown hateful elf girl he once saved from death, who thought he was going to kill her. So he is a bro, bro'est of all Drow.
* We're reasonably sure he didn't cause 4e.
* <s>He's part of the elf master-race.</s> WHO LET THE ELVES IN HERE???
* He's a ranger and a bad motherfucker, two things that, in D&D, have rarely blent well. Might have to do with being raised by a badass bearded blind ranger, and at least having a class of barbarian in the older editions for the "berserk" trance he used in the Dark Elf Trilogy.
* Did we mention he dual-wields scimitars like threshers like Baraka on crack? It's as good as it sounds.

...On a serious note, it's because people have always liked the idea of playing "monster" races. From goblins to orcs to minotaurs, it's as old as D&D. Literally; Gygax included notes expressing different opinions on the idea in different supplements over the years and reportedly once let someone bring a balrog to the table. Evil races are often kinda sweet. Why else would Chaos have as many fans as it does? But bringing a monster attitude to a normal gaming table is often disruptive. Gygax pointed out that having a balrog in the party made it hard to adventure, since it kept trying to dominate or abuse the other party members into line.

So, to the kind of mind that likes coming up with "unconventional" PC choices, playing a non-evil version of a traditionally-evil race is a good way to try to create a character with an adventuring-party-friendly personality without fully sacrificing the cool-factor that made the traditionally-evil race popular in the first place. And it was pretty good roleplay fodder too before it got run into the ground: the player in question got to have angst while the party got to show how cool and not-racist they were for looking past the monster PC's race to see them for the good person they were inside.

Drizzt, bless his heart, was merely the first example of what people have always been doing to get lots of spotlight. In the Prequel explaining his backstory, he gets a considerable amount of fleshing out and has good explanation for his items and skills. It is learned that his father, Zaknafein is a Drow so manly that he openly repudiates Lol'th in public yet is given leeway by his fuckbuddy, Matron Malice (Drizzt's mom) that she fucks him regular because of his rejection of submission typical of Drow males. It is Drizzt's father that infuses his idealism and good heart, and subtly tells Drizzt that Drow are backstabbing faggots who can't wait a split second before going on free-for-all a la Neogi. So Drizt got saved from an evil Matriarchal society by a strong father figure, an evil, lawless society where only women are revered and fatherless, dark skinned children go on cathartic murder sprees and enslave others.

Holy fucking hell Salvatore, I didn't think you were /pol/ before it was cool.

He starts rather well in the Crystal Shard of the Icewind Dale trilogy complete with severe weakness to sun that nearly gets him killed at the beginning of the book, but goes increasingly batshit Mary Sue by the time his Stupid Evil kin decide to attack the surface to enslave and murder. He infiltrates their city, complete with magic time bombs (Yes, magic C-4) to blow up Drow cathedrals and fight dozens of Drow at once like some Assassin's Creedfag on steroids and pointy faggot elf ears. Seriously Salvatore, you done fucked up.

Afterwards, he kinda mellows and goes on a few adventures, fucks a light elf chick and saves her ass, that sort of comicbook shit. He never really lets being the most popular and iconic drow and the most popular and iconic ranger in the gameline go to his head, and that makes him pretty tolerable.

Eldrazi are (mindless?) lovecraftian abominations with an appetite that makes Tyranids look anorexic. When Tyranids are through with a world there is at least a barren piece of rock. They also make tyranids seem like natives to wherever they are attacking. These cosmic horrors are so alien they don't even truly enter the plane they feed on. They have their (physical) shadows go in. Then they create swarms of brood that devour the plane of mana and life energy while the actual Eldrazi Titans (e.i. the actual Eldrazi) just chill in their home, the Blind Eternities. These shadows are represented in game as creatures, and Rise of the Eldrazi drones aside, colorless creatures. At the time of their release in Rise of the Eldrazi, the only other colorless creatures are artifacts and face down cards. The card Scion of Ugin has since joined that list.

Worshipers
The Eldrazi Titans, before they were freed grew to be considered gods, which Nahiri probably inadvertently had a part in. After becoming free and completely fucking up the plane by eating almost everything (mainly through brood) and even just being there, some idiots (like Ayli) still worshipped them and act accordingly.

Kozilek
Kozilek was worshiped under the following names:
* Cosi (merfolk). Cosi is a trickster god that the more pious merfolk refused to worship and preferred to be forgotten.
* Talib (kor)

Ulamog
Ulamog was worshiped under the following names:
* Ula (merfolk) Ula created the oceans, and as such was unsurprisingly the most revered merfolk god
* Mangeni (Kor)

Emrakul
Emrakul was worshiped under the following names:
* Emeria/Em (merfolk) Emeria liked to watch Cosi and Ula fight.
* Kamsa (kor)

The Titans
Each of the Titans has it's own traits. They don't really seem to have a gender or sex, but because pronouns are convenient, they were eventually assigned genders for pronoun purposes only.

Kozilek
Kozilek's brood have a bunch of eyes. Kozilek's schtick is that it is the one that drives you insane.
Pronoun:Male

Ulamog
Ulamog is the hungriest eldrazi. He and his brood have a bony mask/helmet like structure.
Pronoun:Male

Emrakul
Emrakul's brood has "fleshlike lattice structures, uneasy bilateral symmetry, and tentacles that end in knobby, vestigial digits". Also drives you insane. And mutates stuff (although undead are resistant or immune to this). Alive stuff seems to be the most vulnerable to it. Emrakul is regarded as the most powerful eldrazi.
Pronoun: Female.

In Game
First off, players, and WotC, generally only call straight up Eldrazi (as in no other creature subtypes) "Eldrazi", so thats what we are gonna do here. The Eldrazi are fatties, the weakest one is a 7/7 (and by the way, thats a common). Thematically you are supposed to get Eldrazi Spawn out before you get out your Eldrazi, to help (or flat out entirely) pay for Eldrazi. This is (in at least some formats) entirely viable. Eldrazi spawn are 0/1 creature tokens that you can sac to gain 1 colorless mana. Cards that make these tokens generally do something else, so the token is basically a rider for mana/the chumpest of chumps for later use.

Rise of the Eldrazi
Annihilator
Every Eldrazi released in Rise of the Eldrazi has the Annihilator keyword ability. When a creature with a Annihilator attacks, the defending player sacs a specific number of permanents, because the Zendikari gods are hungry. Annihilator is a very scary keyword ability, so in a multiplayer game its probably wise to stay away from having it unless you're okay with getting ganged up on by EVERYBODY! Between annihilator and Eldrazi Spawn, its probably a good idea to have things that benefit when something gets sacrificed, like Mortician Beetle (which, you may have noticed came out at the same time as the Eldrazi tribal cards).
After the release of Rise of the Eldrazi, Wizard's R&D then looked at the market research and decreed it was: NOT FUN (specifically, getting Annihilated is more miserable than Annihilating is fun). So we probably won't see new cards with it for a long time (if you exclude reprints), if ever.

Eldrazi Titans
If one of the 3 Eldrazi Titans ends up in your graveyard, you shuffle your entire graveyard into your library. So Eldrazi Titans can be used as mythic rare anti-library-to-graveyard mill tech when the format allows.
If a deck is designed to cheat a creature into play, that creature is generally chosen to be Emrakul. Even though its first 2 abilities are only helpful if you CAST it, its so powerful that decks that cheat creatures into play without casting them still usually choose Emrakul (who cost 15 is a 15/15, immune to coloured magic, crazy fucking monster) (if feasible, you can't sorcery speed reanimate any of the Eldrazi Titans).

Battle for Zendikar
The Duel Decks: Zendikar vs. Eldrazi announcement revealed that an Eldrazi was being printed without Annihilator. The Eldrazi have a exiling your opponents library theme. For the most part, it isn't efficient enough to warrant a milling strategy. Instead it acts as an enabler for another Eldrazi theme: Removing cards an opponents cards from exile and putting them in the graveyard for some sort of benefit. Lastly the Eldrazi Spawn theme is back except they are 1/1s and called Eldrazi Scions now.

Devoid
Devoid is a static ability that makes a card colorless in all zones despite what it's mana cost would tell you. Devoid creatures sometimes have activated abilities that use the same color as their colors in their mana cost. Devoid does not impact a card's color identity in commander. This is R&D's way of giving the Eldrazi abilities that are assigned to certain factions of the color pie (e.g. direct damage and red), in a fashion that denies access to those abilities to other colors, without giving (or at the very least down playing) the Eldrazi that color's flavor. Why not just use a color indicator instead of an ability word? Well MaRo initially wanted it to be based on the card frame. The rules team said they couldn't do that. So they had someone do a colorless color indicator. She couldn't make it so players picked up on it. Communication is important, so they resorted to having an ability word.

Ingest, Process & Colorless Mana
Because WotC decreed Annihilator: NOT FUN, a mechanic was needed to take on the role of representing the Eldrazi's hunger. Ingest and Processing represents the Eldrazi Titan Ulamog, the hungriest Titan. The flavor seems to be ingest is like eating, and process is digesting. Colorless mana represents the Titan Kozilek, and uses cost that can't be paid for with colored mana.

Ingest
Ingest is a mechanic on eldrazi creatures that exiles the top card of an opponent library whenever the creature damages them. This represent both the Eldrazis hunger but also how their mere presence gradually drives other beings insane since your deck of cards represents your mind.

Process
A non-keyworded mechanic that moves cards from an opponents exile zone (non-existence) into their graveyard as a cost to get effect cheaper than it would normally be costed. This ability is supposed to represents how beyond mortal comprehension and weird the Eldrazi are, as normally things put in the exile zone can only be returned only by whatever put them there.

Colorless Mana
Kozilek's brood use colorless mana as a cost, which can not be paid for by colored mana. And since you'll to add colourless mana sources to pay for them this functions as a 'sixth colour' with its own (utility wise) new basic land (Waste). This represents that the Eldrazi are older than the concept of colored mana and represents Kozilek ability to bend reality.
