A '''meme''' is an idea that spreads itself, supposedly in the same way that a gene does in biology.  Notice how "meme" and "gene" sound kind of similar? That's intentional.

A good and simple example comes from the Japanese Macaque: One day a monkey saw a human take a bath in a hot spring, thought it was a good idea, and when it was cold one day it went into a spring itself.  Other monkeys saw the first monkey and realized that, hey, that monkey's got a good thing going and also entered the hot spring.  Over time the idea, or "meme" of the hot spring entered the general monkey population and today most Macaques take hot spring baths.

In the context of [[/tg/]] and [[4chan]] in general a meme is a running joke; an inside joke that everyone is in on.  A meme can be a pattern of text or images that is posted repeatedly, either for its intrinsic humor value, as a punchline or automatic reaction to certain types of posts, or for the extrinsic humor of the meme itself (posting a meme because the meme itself is desirable, not because the post itself is good).  Correctly using memes for humor is an art form, and one that /tg/ takes endless joy in, as it does all [[Hot Chicks|scientific pursuits]].

Memes on /tg/, as on any board, often come about organically: someone posts something so hilarious or elegant or horrible that it ''must'' be reposted.  If it gets reposted enough, and enough people are introduced to it and begin reposting it themselves, it becomes a meme.  Sometimes a meme is taken from somewhere else: catch phrases and running jokes from movies and games, or features of websites (like greentext or hashtags) can be elevated into meme status by being adopted and reposted for the lulz outside of their original context.  A '''forced meme''' is when a single person repeatedly posts something, which is not (yet) a meme, in an attempt to ''make'' it a meme.  It usually [[FAIL|fails]].

Another of several [[meme]]s that wound up on [[/tg/]] through cross-contamination of [[/b/]] and [[/v/]], Rebecca Black is a [[Noise Marines|fucking horrible singer]] who did a song called ''Friday'', which can only be described as being akin to subjecting your eardrums to a [[Exterminatus|protracted virus bombing]], but without the sweet release of death at the end. It is so bad, in fact, that it has managed to drive numerous fa/tg/uys into [[Khorne|homicidal frenzies]]. Furthermore 80% of the song was [[Fail|autotuned]]...who would have guessed.

This is unusual, for several reasons.

/tg/, historically, knows better than to get involved with hate on music groups/artists that suck - and not simply on matters of principle. When /b/ began a hate-campaign against [[Justin Bieber]], for example, /tg/ just rolled its eyes and went about its usual business of [[/tg/ gets shit done|getting shit done]], since the userbase of /tg/, being slightly less retarded than most, knows that in a few short years, he won't even exist in the back of our memories anymore, self-destructing or simply getting too old to be viable, much as was the case for ''every other fucking useless boy band that came out in the 1990s and early 2000s''. Suffice to say, when /b/tards brought news of this particular singer to /tg/, it brought out a rare level of [[Rage|rage]] [[Matt Ward|that only one man thus far has been able to coax out]].

None can quite say why the song (and its singer) is so bad; in fact, the entire work as a whole is a rich trapestry of suckage, kind of like a stack of codices by [[Matt Ward]]. Some parts of the work stand out as particularly stupid; the fact that the entire song is done with the aid of a harmonizer and was done by a bunch of rich white people who think this is [[Awesome|akin to Doomrider making a comeback in scope]] likely does volumes for the hate, as does the obvious 13-year-old driving in the video and the song itself being complete and total feces.

True to form, however, /tg/ has done its time-honored practice of getting shit done and making win out of fail, when one specific fa/tg/uy noticed something that had previously gone unnoticed by most of the other users of /tg/. When it had been brought to the attentions of those involved, much laughter and humor came about.

The /tg/ meme of Rebecca Black is somewhat different than the simple ones stemming from other boards; /tg/ argues that Rebecca Black is, in fact, the illegitimate daughter of [[Indrick Boreale]]. The similarities in their verbiage is just too hilariously similar to be coincidence. Comparing Boreale's [[Space Marines|SPESS MEHREENS]] and [[Emperor|EMPRAH]] to the lyrics of ''Friday'' certainly strongly suggests it:

== Meme Magic ==
The usual suspects on /pol/ have come to believe in a certain deity name "Kek", who shares the same name as an Egyptian frog god, and the appearance of the Pepe meme is responsible for getting Donald Trump elected to the American Presidency in 2016 somehow.  While we won't go into how fuckstupid this forced nonsense is (and of course this is 4chan, so at least ''some of them'' are likely taking the piss), we will note that the idea behind "meme magic" is essentially similar to the [[Ork]]s' [[Waaagh|gestalt psychic field]] or how [[Fall of the Eldar|the Eldar murderfucked Slaanesh into existence]], and to a lesser extent, the Warp in general.  The further a meme is spread (or the more intensely it is reposted), the more powerful the "meme magic" becomes.

As for Kek themselves, they would probably be closer to [[Cegorach]] more than anything, since his power is mainly associated with mockery and tricking people for its own sake, rather than [[Tzeentch|manipulation or]] [[Just as Planned|grand schemes.]]

Also notable is that Pepe was making the rounds in 2010-2011, as part of the Rage Faces memeosphere that rapidly consumed Reddit during that time (an early warning sign of the cancer to come), and died along with the rest of those memes by late 2012 when everyone had gotten sick of the putrid mess.  That it returned in force by late-2014 is eyebrow-raising in and of itself, as most memes that die ''that hard'' stay dead forever.  Meme magic indeed.
