''Rogue Stars is a character-based science fiction skirmish wargame, where players command crews of bounty hunters, space pirates, merchants, prospectors, smugglers, mercenary outfits, planetary police and other such shady factions from the fringes of galactic civilisation. Crews can vary in size, typically from four to six, and the character and crew creation systems allow for practically any concept to be built. Detailed environmental rules that include options for flora, fauna, gravity, dangerous terrain and atmosphere, and scenario design rules that ensure that missions are varied and demand adaptation and cunning on the parts of the combatants, make practically any encounter possible. Run contraband tech to rebel fighters on an ocean world while hunted by an alien kill-team or hunt down a research vessel and fight zero-gravity boarding actions in the cold depths of space - whatever you can imagine, you can do. Clinging is the ability to move up on walls and ceilings using Crawl, Walk, and Run actions. Sprinting is not possible. The trait comes in three levels to represent different grades of freedom while clinging, depending on the means used by the creature to stick to walls. With the first level, all limbs are used to stick to the wall.

With the second level, the character can have one free limb while clinging, and use it to hold equipment or use a tool/weapon (but reloading is going to be impossible).
With the third level, the character can have two free limbs while clinging, but may still not use Long or Two-handed melee weapons.
While clinging, a character gains an elevation +1 bonus to attack in melee any non-clinging

The muscular Throssians use these super-sharp, forearm-mounted tubes to toss grenades, and their use is spreading across the galaxy among members of large enough species. Not only the tubes add 2” to the throwing distance of the grenade, they are sharp enough to count as Claws in melee. The tube themselves are Civilian class, but Grenades must be purchased separately with their normal class.

The PBWP is a one-use object that can be thrown as a grenade. Upon impact, the PBWP creates a 3” radius circle of ultrasharp barbed wire, that counts an area of dangerous terrain. Any model going through the monowire must Crawl at speed of 1”. Any faster movement requires a Terrain roll, with the character receiving a Damage 2 attack on BOTH legs (all legs for species with m,ore than two legs) on a failure. Models wearing Heavy Power Armor ignore the damage but still count the terrain as rough, and fall on a failed terrain roll.

Combination weapons combine the profiles of two existing weapons (normally, a ranged weapon and a melee one) into a new one. The cost is derived by adding the costs of the two weapons and adding 2XP to the total, with a slight adjustment if the combined weapon offers other advantages or disadvantages. A combination weapon is handy because your character can shoot and use the same weapon in melee without having to draw a secondary weapon. The disadvantage is that he loses both weapon functions if he is disarmed or if the weapon is destroyed. Here are a few examples:

This combination weapon can be used as a Force Spear (Damage 3, Long, Energy, Two-Handed) in melee and as a Laser Rifle (Damage 5, Blind, Two-Handed, Energy) in ranged combat. If the weapon goes out of ammo and is not reloaded, it loses its energy effect in melee as well (both the melee function and the laser beams use the same power cell) and counts as a Damage 1 Long Weapon in melee.

* '''Vibroblade Blaster''' 10XP Military
A weapon favored by pirates, this works as a Vibroblade and a Laser Pistol combined. The Vibroblade continues working even if the Laser Pistol goes out of ammo or malfunctions.

This is a three-pronged spear used in gladiatorial fights on Thalus. It counts as a Civilian weapon as it is often sold to tourists. In melee, the trident counts as a Damage 2 Disarm Long Two-Handed weapon, but it also stores enough energy to shoot a single electrical blast equivalent to a Zap Pistol (Damage 3, Electrical, Energy, Short Range, One Shot). The weapon may also be thrown as a heavy javelin (Damage 2, Primitive, One Shot, Short Range, Max Range 8).

This curved blade is designed for extreme close combat, and hits at +1 when used to perform a Counterattack. In addition, the hilt contains a single, gas-propelled projectile that counts as a One-Shot, Damage 4 Slug Pistol attack (Short Range). The knife may also be thrown as a regular throwing knife (One Shot, Max Range 8, Primitive, Short Range).

A Drone Arrow is a self-propelled missile weapon that is remotely controlled by its user via neural net, radio-telepathy, or through an augmented reality net. The arrow flies up to 12 MU per turn, hitting any target in its flight path. The Drone Arrow is considered a Self-Accelerating missile, and so it ignores the -1 to hit in high gravity conditions. It may not receive any other weapon upgrades, may not be Accurate, and does not benefit from Aiming.

Hitting with arrow: The hit roll is at +1 per every level in the Drone Jockey trait the controller possesses. The only modifier that applies is the target’s size (Diminutive, Big, Huge) and any levels of Difficult Target the target possesses. If the arrow misses its to hit roll, or hits and inflicts any wound on a target, it may continue its movement towards the next target. If it hits a target but fails to wound it, its movement for that action stops there, in contact with the target.
If the arrow misses its target, it can veer towards a different target, or even towards the target it just missed. It may veer up to 360 degrees, trying to hit it again, but this will cost the arrow 2 MU.

Attacking the arrow: While in flight, the arrow may be attacked in melee at -8, or with a ranged attack at -10. If hit by any attack causing Damage 2 or better, the arrow falls to the ground, damaged, and may not be used again until it is repaired.
A Martial Artist hitting the arrow bare-handedly and rolling a critical success can catch the arrow and keep it in his hands. On a critical failure, however, the arrow strikes his arm at +2 to Damage. A normal success allows the Martial Artist to deflect the arrow.

Repairing a damaged arrow: This requires a TN 10, Tech roll task. An action will be necessary per point of Damage the arrow has received. For example, if the arrow was hit by a Damage 4 attack, four actions will be required to attempt the repair task. The user is assumed to carry repair material but may NOT carry an additional arrow, as these are rare and expensive. In a campaign, players may agree that a character may buy a second arrow by paying a premium cost (we suggest 12XP).

Line of Sight: The Drone Arrow constantly sends a video and data feed to its user. Spot rolls and Line of Sight may be measured from the arrow itself OR from the user, as desired.

Action expenditure and Stress: Moving the arrow up to 12 MU requires the expenditure of an action and puts 1 Stress on the user. This is one Stress per flight action, NOT one per attack performed by the arrow.

Interaction with psi abilities: If the target of the Drone Arrow becomes unavailable due to a use of the Teleport or Blink abilities, and the Drone Arrow can still trace LoS on him, the arrow may veer towards the target again, but loses 2MU in order to do so.
A psionic target may use Telekinetic Crush to attack the arrow in mid-flight, at -4 on its Psi roll. Telekinetic Disarm or Telekinetic Push may be used, with a successful Psi roll at -5, to deflect the arrow so it loses 8 MU of movement or is moved 4 MU in any direction chosen by the psionic.

The weapon is fastened to the user's arm with a sling, retractable cord or strap. If the character drops the weapon, because he is disarmed or his arm is crippled or because he chooses to drop the weapon, the weapon becomes unready (it will need one action to be readied) but it does not fall to the ground.

This enhancement may be applied only to ranged energy weapons. The weapon is rewired in a way that increases its Damage by 1 against any target within 6 MU. Against targets that are more than 6 MU away, the bonus does not apply. Any critical failure on the weapon's Shooting roll means the weapon is destroyed. The weapon is replaced as normal between games. Hotshotting may also be applied to Built-In weapons, but any critical failure also inflicts an attack with half the weapon's Damage, rounded down, on the body part where the weapon is installed. This attack ignores that body part's Armour score (just perform the Endure roll for the part affected).

The psionic must be wielding a ready psionically powered melee weapon or an energy melee weapon to use this trait. Whenever an attack from a ranged energy weapon or primitive ranged weapon hits the character, the character may attempt to deflect it with his weapon. The TN for this action is the modified total rolled by the opponent (so, if the shooter rolled a total of 17, the psionic needs to roll a 17 or better to deflect the attack). If the shooting roll was a critical success, the attack may not be deflected. On a critical failure, the psionic's weapon flies from his hands (allow the opponent to place it anywhere within 3”). Each successful Parry puts one Stress token on the psionic. Note that no action or reaction needs to be available to the character to use this ability.

The psionic may phase through solid objects. It takes two actions, and a successful TN12 Psi roll, to enter the phasing state. While phasing, the character can ignore all physical obstacles including enemies and move through them with a Walk action. If the character performs any movement faster than a Walk or use any other psionic ability, he loses the concentration required to remain phasing and becomes solid. A Phasing character is unaffected by all attacks except punches, kicks and martial arts attacks performed by other Phasing characters, and Phasing lasers. Psionic attacks that affect the mind hit him normally. The character's carried equipment phases with him, even if dropped, and becomes solid again if the character stops using the power. Phasing equipment does not work – all types of Armor will offer only 1 Point of armor against the melee attacks of other phasing characters, force fields will not work, and so on.

The psionic can levitate an object that can be held in one hand, such as a one-handed weapon, a grenade, a tool or even a hypodermic needle to administer a drug. The object moves up to 4'' per action, using actions or reactions from the psionic, who must be within 12” of the object at all time. If at any moment the psionic and the object become more than 12” apart, the psionic loses control over the object and the object falls to the ground.

When using an object through this ability, the psionic may not use any levelled Trait with that object. For example, when firing a levitating gun, the character would not benefit from any levels in the Marksman Trait. If using a weapon through Levitate Object, the user still needs to have a LoS to the target and may not perform the Aim action. A levitating grenade will still require one action to be primed (the priming happens telekinetically). One advantage of using a weapon through levitation is that the user is not constrained to using weapons designed for his morphology and size.

Gargantua is an early model of Heavy Power Armour. It has the same stats and rules of Heavy Power Armour, but is also Bulky.

Armour 1 on legs and arms, Armour 2 on head and torso, Sealed.

This can be combined with a kevlar jacket for +6XP. The combination gives Armour 4 to the torso, 2 on the head, and 1 on all other locations, and count as Sealed.

You could also combine Superlight Combat Dress (10XP), Kevlar jacket (6XP) and Refraction Field (10XP) for a total of 26XP. This combination would give you Armour 5 on the torso, 3 on the head, and 2 on limbs, and be Sealed. While actually more expensive than a suit of Power Armor (25XP), this combined set has the advantage of being Civilian-grade.

This is a piece of civilian equipment that gives the wearer the same abilities as the Clinging trait possesses by some aliens, for the same XP cost. It is used to let humanoids move on settlements, structures and spaceships created by alien races with the Clinging trait, and it is also handy to perform spaceship repairs in zero-gee environments. The user has no hands or feet free while clinging, but can freely move on walls and ceilings. For other rules, see the Clinging trait. As a Civilian grade equipment, this can be damaged by superficial damage. If this happens while the wearer is clinging, the wearer will fall. The cling suit can be worn together with any Civilian-grade armour but not with Force-fields of any kind – the molecular charge suppression used to cling interferes with the force field generators.

This apparatus may be mounted on any form of rigid power armor. It shoots a mass of telescopic, superflexible steel cables at a target within 1MU. This count as a Long melee weapon and hits with a melee roll, not a Shoot roll, and is modified by levels in the Weapon Master trait, not Marksman. The weapon inflicts no damage. The target must perform a roll to avoid being entangled (+1 per level of the Agile trait, -2 if wearing Bulky Armor, -2 if encumbered with a Heavy load). The roll has a TN equal to the modified number rolled by the attacker. For example, if the attacker rolled 13 and had a modifier of -1, the TN would be (13-1)= 12.
On a critical failure, the character is caught on the body part that was hit, and falls Prone.
On a failure, the character is caught on the body part that was hit, OR is disarmed (attacker's choice). The disarmed weapon is caught in the mass of steel cables. The Wrist Tangler user may, as a free action, decide to retrieve the weapon using another hand or throw it up to 4MU away.
On a success, the character avoids the tangler.
On a critical success, the character avoids the tangler and may do one of the following:
Move away 2” as a free action (receiving no Free Hacks as he does so);
Grab the cables (if he has a free hand and has Armor 2 or better on the arm grabbing the cables);
Cut the cables (if he has a ready Damage 4 or better melee weapon in his hands).
If a target is caught, the user of the Wrist Tangler may use an action to drag him towards himself, in base-to-base contact with himself, and perform a Free Hack at him using a non-Long melee weapon. Compare the Size of the Tangler-wielder and the target: a character may only drag targets its own size or smaller. A character wearing an exoskeleton may drag any target.
Once caught, a target may free himself only by performing one of the following:
Putting the user OOA;
Crippling the user's arm;
Cutting the wires using a Damage 4 or better, non-Long melee weapon;
Using a Disentangler and performing a successful TN12 Tech roll;
Teleporting away from the melee;
Hitting the tangler with a Telekinetic Crush attack;
Destroying the tangler with a Superficial Damage result.
Until the target disentangles himself, he may not leave the melee. Use of any form of movement causes the target to fall Prone at his captor's feet.
The Wrist Tangler may also be used to aid in climbing. The character must spend one action to shoot the cables on some fixture that can hold his weight (players' judgment, but in general any metallic structure and large trees will hold a normal sized character). After he does so, he has a +3 to his Climbing roll for the first Climbing action. After that, if the character wants to use the bonus again, he must spend another action to repeat the process.

Redshirt are cheaper, cannon-fodder characters that may be added to a gang. They can represent a lot different things: immature aliens that defend their queen, juvenile delinquents that try to impress gang members, rookie cops, fanatic followers of a psionic cult, violent fans of a famous popstar, would-be adventurers who hope to learn the trade, untrained militias, servitor races of stronger aliens, common rioters joining a rebellion, and so on.

Redshirts are created with 8 to 29XP each, using equipment appropriate to their theme and role. Being a Redshirt is a -8XP trait. They do not gain XP in campaigns and should not be assigned equipment that they couldn't normally have.

Redshirts activate only when a character spends one action to perform the Order action. This lets TWO Redshirts perform one action each, without dicing for activation. A Redshirt may perform a single action and then he may not receive another Order until the Initiative has switched.

Redshirts have -4 on all rolls they perform: Shoot, Morale, Melee, everything is at -4 (they are normal persons, even though they may have training and equipment beyond the reach of average people).

There is very little book-keeping involved with Redshirts. Redshirts do not accumulate Stress. The character using an Order to move two Redshirts receives 1 Stress token as normal, but the Redshirts need not be marked. If you are afraid you might lose track of which Redshirt has been activated, turn them so they face their baseline.

When a Redshirt gains one Pin token, he becomes Pinned. A Pinned Redshirt may not perform any action other than Running or Sprinting towards cover, until a character spends one action to Rally him (one action per Redshirt to be rallied). A Pinned Redshirt that takes another Pinned effect does not suffer any additional effects.

When a Redshirt takes one wound, no matter in which part of the body, no matter the severity of the wound, the Redshirt goes OOA.

Redshirts do not roll Reactions. A character may use a successful reaction to perform an Order, thus activating up to two Redshirts that haven't performed their action already.
When a character goes OOA, Redshirts roll Morale (at -4, like all the rolls they make). Any Redshirt failing a Morale roll is Pinned, or Panicking if he rolls a critical failure.
When Redshirts go OOA, characters do NOT roll Morale. They are more or less expected not to last too much.

If all the characters in a game go OOA or move off the table, any Redshirts still on the table automatically panic or surrender, as appropriate to the scenario.

** ''Designer's note:'' Redshirts are useful for players who agree to field larger forces. We recommend that the number of normal characters plus Redshirts does not exceed a total of 10 figures per side. Players may agree to have only a couple of characters and more Redshirts for a quicker game that requires less book-keeping and dice rolling than usual. These may be utter crap because I didn't have any chance to try them on the table (as my kickstarter started today I am quite busy) but please try them with an open mind and let me know how they work for you. In the book, if these work, I plan to have a list of typical Redshirts so players who want to play by the book can fall back to the "official" profiles. It's not written in the rules, but it is assumed that BOTH players agree to the use of Redshirts. They change the game considerably, but let you put more figures on the table if you want.
And remember, the shirts are red because blood won't show :-)
