Evangelists are characterized as having a more intense personal relationship with their deity than most Clerics, often never having sought out the diety nor having formal training. Due to their natural link to their diety and capability for [[Spontaneous Casting]], Evangelists are often compared to [[Sorcerer (Dungeons & Dragons)|Sorcerers]].

* The Evangelist is ranked Tier 2 on the updated [[Tier System]].
* The Evangelist is the first cleric variant capable of Spontaneous Casting, though was followed by the [[Favored Soul]] and [[Mystic]], respectively. The cleric also gained a variant system in [[Unearthed Arcana#3e UA Content|Unearthed Arcana 3e]] with the capability of Spontaneous Casting.
