== Oh god that's alot of Space Station 13 History. == The creator Exadv1 originally made Space Station 13 in 2003, although in a '''much''' more barebones version than the one today, it was only really played within a very small circle and how the game worked was a pretty heavily guarded secret, at the time though the game still had some elements that are still done on most stations (such as rounds ending upon the emergency shuttle) today, however unlike today the code was kept primarily close sourced and nobody but Exadv1 really had hands on the code. === 2006 === The popularity of the game (a whole 10 players!) started to wane and people began leaving, some other player named AZA recieved a compiled version of the game but due to disagreements with Exadv1 he was rather upset over, AZA decided to instead of working with Exadv1, to go work with someone else called hobnob to decompile the version acquired and release it. It was spread around but it didn't really matter much until one of them could make something with it, and thus the first community, '''OpenSS13''', was born. Unlike how Exadv1 did it, '''OpenSS13''''s codebase was entirely open source for anyone to come and mess with it for others to enjoy, this attracted the attention of [[Something Awful]] and their goons, which went on to open up their own servers. === Moving onto the 2007-2010 period === The game now went from its original status of "popular" to its new status of popular! With peaks of 18 players! It's around this point where 2 other notable servers came around, '''Goonstation''' (remember this one) and '''Penny Arcade''' (don't remember this one), '''OpenSS13''' was still around but now Space Station 13 started to have more and more variety between the codebases and features that were on some servers while others didn't have it at all Around 2009 Space Station 13 servers got peaks of 25 players (even more popularity!!!), and '''Goonstation''' in particular made massive strides in developing new features, maps, and other such things that expanded the game. However '''Goonstation''' followed Exadv1's original thinking with a closed source codebase that only few could have direct access to. It was around 2010 when '''Goonstation''' made a public release of their source code (they were still closed source however, so you weren't gonna get the most recent version of their source code) which was dubbed '''Goonstation''' r4407. === More on 2010 === With r4407 released, the floodgates were opened and now there was a massive collection of servers being created all based on r4407, most of which went back with the idea to be open-sourced. Some of the new notable servers that came out were: * '''/tg/station''', a spawn from 4chan * '''Baystation''', coming from Bay12games * '''Facepunch''' * '''YogStation''' * '''/vg/station''', another spawn from 4chan And with all this new stuff, the servers started getting alot more traction with more players and more people to help. === Skipping to 2016 where notable things happen again === The community at this point had grown far higher than previously, with servers now having way more players and servers now being so different that you almost wouldn't know that they all were related to eachother. Meanwhile trouble was brewing at the goons, around March 1st someone had stolen the codebase '''Goonstation''' was using and released it, however after some deliberation '''Goonstation''' made a public release of their code yet again. === 2017 === Exadv1 got interviewed by the BlackPants Legion which led to alot of information about the games history be cleared up, previously it was thought that someone stole the source code from Exadv1's USB in his room and then someone decompiled that, but now it is known what really happened as described earlier in the 2006 part. === 2019 === This was the year of the Ssethtide, what was the Ssethtide? It was a massive influx of players that came from Ssethtzeentach's video on the game, the servers at the time weren't equipped to be able to handle this situation in the slightest, which they'd probably still suffer from if it were to happen again today, it massively increased the popularity of the game and made people more aware about it. === 2020 === Around this time '''Goonstation''' got their code leaked for the third time, finally having had enough of leaks and due to complaints about their closed sourced codebase, they finally decided to become fully open source.
